0:00:02 > 0:00:05A motorway cop's duties are always complex.

0:00:05 > 0:00:08We need some sort of padding from the first-aid box.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10From carer...

0:00:10 > 0:00:13Sierra two, we have a vehicle failing to stop.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14..to enforcer.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16It is safe to continue at this time.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19Because on the motorway, you never know what to expect.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23My heart hasn't finished pounding yet,

0:00:23 > 0:00:24but yeah, I'm really pleased they're here.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27And looking after the vulnerable...

0:00:27 > 0:00:28- Can you hear me all right, Bill? - Yeah.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30..is all part of the job.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34- I'm just trying to protect you, save you from being killed.- Yeah.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Somebody's got to put themselves forward,

0:00:36 > 0:00:38put themselves in harm's way

0:00:38 > 0:00:41to make sure other people are looked after in society.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44That's why I do it, to do that and to make a difference.

0:00:44 > 0:00:45To protect people.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11The M62 cuts across West Yorkshire.

0:01:14 > 0:01:18Just north of the motorway's halfway point sits the city of Bradford.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23During rush hour, nearly 30,000 vehicles

0:01:23 > 0:01:24use the city roads and carriageways.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Trying to stay on top of it all are the motorway cops.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31SIREN WAILS

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Afternoon traffic is building

0:01:34 > 0:01:37as West Yorkshire officers Lindsey Pickles and Andy Barron

0:01:37 > 0:01:39head into Bradford.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41They are only a couple of miles away from the centre

0:01:41 > 0:01:43when a report comes over the radio.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53A city-centre patrol car is pursuing a speeding driver.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57Let's go for that.

0:01:58 > 0:02:03Shipley Airedale Road is a main A650 arterial route through Bradford,

0:02:03 > 0:02:05so it's extremely busy.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07That's a massive, massive A road, is that.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16That is very close. That's coming up, that is.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19We knew from the call signs that the police vehicle

0:02:19 > 0:02:22couldn't pursue this car for very long.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25It would need specialist support very, very quickly.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28The pursuit is less than a mile away.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30The motorway cops are trained to pursue.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34If they can get there quickly, they can take over from the patrol car.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38But the busy lunchtime traffic is slowing them down.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Why is nobody hearing me?

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Tango four one, we're standing by a mile ahead,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Wakefield Road at junction with Dudley Hill.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47There's obviously that adrenaline rush

0:02:47 > 0:02:49when somebody is not stopping,

0:02:49 > 0:02:51but it's more fear than anything else.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54It's, "What's going to become of this, how's it going to end?"

0:02:58 > 0:02:59It's crashed.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01We've got a green Ford Focus

0:03:01 > 0:03:05that's been failing to stop for another unit coming towards us.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07It's about a mile down this road.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09However, we're getting information that it's crashed.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Romeo Tango four one,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20we're 30 seconds away now, coming up the Canal Road.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32It were just complete carnage, really.

0:03:32 > 0:03:33This one.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Can we ask local divisional units, please,

0:03:35 > 0:03:37to put me a road closure on

0:03:37 > 0:03:40at the Shipley Airedale Road junction at Leeds Road.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43We need a full closure on Shipley Airedale Road.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48The Ford Focus being pursued has crashed into two other cars.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50The driver of one of them

0:03:50 > 0:03:53and the passenger of the Ford Focus are injured.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57But the cops don't yet know how badly.

0:03:57 > 0:03:58It's when you arrive at a scene

0:03:58 > 0:04:02and you're the first to arrive and nobody else is there,

0:04:02 > 0:04:05that's when it's chaotic and you've got to really think carefully.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Is there going to be loss of life

0:04:07 > 0:04:09if I do something wrong, or different?

0:04:09 > 0:04:14Just sit still, lovey. Just sit still, keep yourself still.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16We need some sort of padding from the first-aid box.

0:04:19 > 0:04:20Just keep yourself still.

0:04:21 > 0:04:22In this situation,

0:04:22 > 0:04:25the cops' first priority is to take care of the injured.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28No matter who we're dealing with,

0:04:28 > 0:04:30if the ambulance is not there, then, yes,

0:04:30 > 0:04:34our main concern is that we tend to the injured parties.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39The passenger in the Focus is their main concern.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41He's bleeding heavily from a head wound.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Talk to me, lovey, talk to me. What's your name?

0:04:43 > 0:04:46BLEEP

0:04:46 > 0:04:48We've got some help coming to you.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50The ambulance is on its way, OK? All right?

0:04:50 > 0:04:53- I'm sorry if I'm being rude. - It's all right, you're not.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55- I'm shaking! - It's all right, it's all right.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57It don't matter. Keep still.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59I'm concerned about has it got any glass in it, that's all.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Can you get into t'back? No.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05Talk to me, lovey.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07I was aware that that was the offending vehicle.

0:05:07 > 0:05:08We'd had the vehicle described to us.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11I knew that that was the vehicle involved.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14But at the end of the day, you've got an injured passenger there.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16He needs medical help.

0:05:16 > 0:05:17Keep still.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21The man who has caused all this has run off.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25The driver could clearly see the injuries to that passenger.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27It would have been impossible not to.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30But his concern was him and getting away.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33No concern for the life of that front-seat passenger.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Keep still so I can just keep some pressure on it, lovey, all right.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39My leg feels all swollen.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Does it? It's all right. We'll sort your leg.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43As the minutes tick by,

0:05:43 > 0:05:46the passenger is losing more and more blood from his wound.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48So my concern was to get some pressure on that

0:05:48 > 0:05:51to try and stem the bleeding.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Keep talking to us. Yeah, yeah.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56Keep it as still as you can. We're keeping pressure on it.

0:05:56 > 0:05:57Can you hold my hand, please?

0:05:57 > 0:05:59I'll hold your hand. I'll hold your hand.

0:05:59 > 0:06:00And the duty of care is

0:06:00 > 0:06:05part and parcel of everything that we do as police officers.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07No matter who we're dealing with.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11The crash has caused long tailbacks

0:06:11 > 0:06:14and the emergency services have had to fight their way through.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20The first thing that I like to see is the ambulance,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23the paramedics there, the first responders.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24Once I know they're there,

0:06:24 > 0:06:28my attention can go completely away from any injured parties.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31I can let out a sigh of relief, if you like.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33Dealing with a serious crash like this

0:06:33 > 0:06:36brings back painful memories for Andy.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39When I first passed my driving test,

0:06:39 > 0:06:43I were involved in a fatal collision on a motorway on the M62

0:06:43 > 0:06:44where me best friend died in the car.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48We broke down on the hard shoulder and something smashed into the back.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52I would say devastating life...experience.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56And I think that drove me to think, "I want to be a cop."

0:06:56 > 0:06:59And that's at the back of all my drive.

0:06:59 > 0:07:00Reduce carnage

0:07:00 > 0:07:04and stop people losing their lives, basically.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07Ambulance is here, OK? Keep talking to us.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- I'm here. - Yeah, you're there still, yeah.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13Lindsey can finally hand over the injured passenger

0:07:13 > 0:07:15to the care of the paramedics.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17- Do you want me to get out of the way now?- Er...yeah.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22To be honest, at this stage, he's the most seriously injured.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25The fire are going to have to take the roof off to get him out

0:07:25 > 0:07:27because he's complaining of neck, back and leg injuries.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29So we'll take the roof off the vehicle

0:07:29 > 0:07:31and extract him on a board

0:07:31 > 0:07:34and get him seen to as quickly as possible.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38And then we'll just speak to the officers that were at the scene

0:07:38 > 0:07:39to ascertain exactly what's happened.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44The other injured motorist is trapped in his car.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48The paramedics think he may have spinal injuries

0:07:48 > 0:07:50and so the fire brigade will have to cut him free.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55But before they get to work, he shares what he knows with Lindsey.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02With paramedics now in attendance,

0:08:02 > 0:08:06Lindsey and Andy switch from carers back to cops.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11We need to gather that evidence

0:08:11 > 0:08:13so that potentially, the person that's caused this

0:08:13 > 0:08:17is ultimately going to be going to court

0:08:17 > 0:08:20and pay the price for what they've done.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Three miles south of Bradford is the M62.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29It's one of the busiest motorways in the country.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33150,000 vehicles use it every day.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40This is PCs Phil Stonebanks and Dave Robson's patch.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Yeah, it's always been in the blood.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44It's always been a family tradition to be in the police.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Me granddad was in, both me parents were in.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50And I suppose it was always a natural progression for me to go in.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52But 24 years in, I can honestly still say

0:08:52 > 0:08:55I love coming to work. I love doing my job.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Being out there, driving on the roads.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01You come across breakdowns, you just never know. Every day is different.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04The motorway traffic is building up when a call comes in.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06A driver has broken down in the fast lane.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11This one's causing massive tailbacks already.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13And once traffic suddenly starts slowing down,

0:09:13 > 0:09:15then that's when we can get accidents

0:09:15 > 0:09:18with vehicles running into the back of the tailbacks,

0:09:18 > 0:09:19not aware of what's happening up ahead of them.

0:09:22 > 0:09:23Rush hour's approaching

0:09:23 > 0:09:26and it's getting just as busy here as in the city.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Phil and Dave are struggling to get through the traffic.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32We hit the tailbacks on the M1,

0:09:32 > 0:09:36probably about a mile and a half before the M62.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40And the breakdown was about five miles further up the M62.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Prepare to breathe in.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44That one vehicle, in lane three, in the roadworks,

0:09:44 > 0:09:46where there was no hard shoulder,

0:09:46 > 0:09:49just caused about five miles of tailbacks

0:09:49 > 0:09:51probably within the space of 20 minutes.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53It caused absolute chaos, did that.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57That's it. Let's get friendly.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00If the motorway cops are having problems,

0:10:00 > 0:10:03a recovery vehicle has no chance.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06The free recovery doesn't have blue lights and sirens

0:10:06 > 0:10:08and can't force his way through traffic like we can.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12So potentially, it could just end up sitting back there in the traffic

0:10:12 > 0:10:15and can't get through, the free recovery.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20Phil and Dave's first duty is to ensure the stranded driver is safe.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Let me have a look. We'll just try and do what we can.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37My heart hasn't finished pounding. I'm really pleased they're here.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41Hopefully, they'll be able to get me out of the fast lane quite soon.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Yeah, bit, bit scared.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45With the driver safe,

0:10:45 > 0:10:49Phil and Dave turn their attention to the five-mile tailback.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51If they can't clear the fast lane quickly,

0:10:51 > 0:10:53there's going to be even more chaos on the motorway.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Just confirm we've got free recovery en route.

0:10:56 > 0:11:00It's not starting for some reason.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03Crawling along in first gear and started to gather a bit of pace.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06I put it into second and it just died.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10Free recovery is potentially en route, we're trying to get an update.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12The Highways Agency couldn't find the vehicle.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15We think they're possibly somewhere in the tailbacks behind us.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18With the recovery truck stuck in traffic,

0:11:18 > 0:11:22it's now up to Phil and Dave to try and move the brand-new Range Rover.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25But it isn't going to be easy.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27I shut the door, locked it with the key

0:11:27 > 0:11:30because it could have had immobilisers on it.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32I opened it back up again, you know, with the key.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Put it in gear, pull the clutch up,

0:11:34 > 0:11:36then press start and it will leapfrog across.

0:11:36 > 0:11:37Right, yeah, we'll have a go, yeah.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41I think a call into Land Rover will be one of the first things we do.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45Leave the clutch up, now press the button.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47The clutch on start.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51It was stuck in gear, the handbrake electronic, that was stuck on.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Yeah, it's not going to do it, is it?

0:11:55 > 0:11:57Modern electronic vehicles are wonderful,

0:11:57 > 0:11:59so long as they're working fine.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02But when they start going wrong, they are an absolute nightmare.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05Because everything now is all just push buttons.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08If the buttons don't work, there's not a right lot you can do about it.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Where's the handbrake on these ones?

0:12:13 > 0:12:14Pull the silver pull.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Oh, right, yeah. Right, we're just checking.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Just knock the handbrake off, see if it'll move. If it'll move...

0:12:19 > 0:12:22- Handbrake's still showing as on. - Is it off, Dave?

0:12:22 > 0:12:23Just one second.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26Right, handbrake's off. Now it's on.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29It comes on automatically, Phil.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32If anything goes wrong now, you need a £10,000 computer

0:12:32 > 0:12:34to plug the car into to make it work again.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38In my days, you got your spanners out and fixed it and away you went.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40Don't you just love modern technology?

0:12:40 > 0:12:42What was wrong with a simple handbrake lever?

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- It looks like an electrical fault. - Yeah.

0:12:45 > 0:12:50In desperation, they decide to tow the car across to the hard shoulder.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52But even this isn't straightforward.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57That's the wonder of modern cars.

0:12:57 > 0:12:58They cover everything in plastic

0:12:58 > 0:13:00and make everything completely inaccessible.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03I'm just trying to find where the front towing eye goes

0:13:03 > 0:13:04by looking in the owner's manual.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09That's the back, that's the front.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Is that the front or is that the back?

0:13:11 > 0:13:14The longer they struggle getting to grips with the car's manual,

0:13:14 > 0:13:15the longer the tailback grows,

0:13:15 > 0:13:19as does the frustration of the drivers who've been delayed.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22You should have that over to the hard shoulder!

0:13:23 > 0:13:28People do go by shaking their heads and tutting and things like that.

0:13:28 > 0:13:33I just think, "What, you know, what are we supposed to do?

0:13:33 > 0:13:36"You know, you come and tell us, Einstein."

0:13:36 > 0:13:38If we could do it, we would have done it.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41I don't want to be stood there blocking the carriageway.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43I'd rather be doing something else.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45But, yeah, they think they're...

0:13:45 > 0:13:48They think we do it on purpose just to wind them up or something.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Yeah, I like lying down in the fast lane of the motorways.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55I mean, it's, er...it certainly keeps you alert

0:13:55 > 0:13:57and aware of what's going on around you.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04There we go, nice big towing eye on there to get on to.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07I think we'll have a crash cushion coming down.

0:14:09 > 0:14:14But as they prepare to tow it, the recovery truck arrives.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17We'll let them drag it on. At least they can get on the towing eye now,

0:14:17 > 0:14:21so he's just going to pull up with the recovery truck,

0:14:21 > 0:14:23hopefully drag the Range Rover on to the back of it

0:14:23 > 0:14:25and then we'll be good to go.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29One of the problems we have is people want to rubberneck

0:14:29 > 0:14:32and want to know what's going off. So they'll slow down, start looking.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35If you just leave them to their own devices, it causes more problems

0:14:35 > 0:14:37because everybody's doing five, ten mile an hour.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39But when we stand and start waving our arms,

0:14:39 > 0:14:42you can visibly see the speed of the traffic moving up.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44It's encouraging people to drive a bit faster and obviously,

0:14:44 > 0:14:47it helps clear the tailbacks quicker, as well.

0:14:58 > 0:15:03After 45 minutes, the Range Rover is finally removed from the fast lane.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05And the cops can get the traffic moving again.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10A female on her own, stuck in lane three, a lot of traffic around.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14We didn't want her getting hurt, or anyone else.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16I'm happy now, I've got me hands mucky.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18If I go home at the end of the day with clean hands,

0:15:18 > 0:15:19I've not done a good day's work.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Back in Bradford, officers Lindsey Pickles and Andy Barron

0:15:26 > 0:15:30are investigating a crash involving three cars at a major junction.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35Is there a chance we could have some assistance with PCSOs

0:15:35 > 0:15:39to assist with road closures down at Valley Road, please?

0:15:40 > 0:15:42The driver who caused it all has fled the scene,

0:15:42 > 0:15:44leaving his passenger and the driver

0:15:44 > 0:15:47of another car trapped and badly injured.

0:15:48 > 0:15:53Obviously, once we're aware that ambulance have taken over

0:15:53 > 0:15:56and they're happy dealing with the injured parties,

0:15:56 > 0:15:59then we have to step up the game.

0:15:59 > 0:16:04Lindsey and Andy need to piece together exactly what happened.

0:16:04 > 0:16:05We need to fathom out what's gone on

0:16:05 > 0:16:08and start preserving evidence and investigating this

0:16:08 > 0:16:10and making sure we don't lose anything.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Is this yours?

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Have you visually seen everything that's happened?

0:16:14 > 0:16:17I have, yeah. It just happened that quick.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20I just seen that car behind there, it goes...

0:16:20 > 0:16:23I don't know, but it spun like that about three times

0:16:23 > 0:16:25and hit that kerb there.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27And that come from no... I don't even know where that come from.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- And it went straight into the back. - Right.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32One of the problems we have at this incident

0:16:32 > 0:16:35is with the vehicle travelling at such high speed,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38it would appear that it's arrived at this location in such a manner

0:16:38 > 0:16:41that any potential witnesses that we might have had

0:16:41 > 0:16:44have not had time to soak in where this vehicle's come from.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48But the officers involved in the pursuit are still on the scene,

0:16:48 > 0:16:50and Andy tracks them down.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53Who was the driver? Had he been caught and who'd caught him?

0:16:53 > 0:16:58I'm just trying to get a picture of who we're pursuing and in what.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00We were pursuing in this.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02- You were pursuing in this?- Yeah.

0:17:02 > 0:17:03Right. He's the driver?

0:17:03 > 0:17:05- He's the driver.- Right. Fantastic.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08One of the cops is in plain clothes.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12Andy discovers they caught the driver as he tried to run from the scene.

0:17:13 > 0:17:17It all fell into place then. It were quite a relief to get all those details written down

0:17:17 > 0:17:19and get a picture of what's gone on.

0:17:19 > 0:17:24He's under arrest on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27We're just trying to clarify whether he needs hospital attention,

0:17:27 > 0:17:30or whether he can be taken straight to custody.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33The passenger he abandoned has deep cuts to the head

0:17:33 > 0:17:35and his condition is deteriorating.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38He urgently needs to get to hospital.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40The fire crews are working as fast as they can

0:17:40 > 0:17:42to cut him out of the car.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48That first hour, it's crucial to get them to the hospital

0:17:48 > 0:17:52and get what they need, any medical attention, very, very quickly.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55And that...A lot of people refer to it as a golden hour.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58With the road blocked, the fastest option

0:17:58 > 0:18:00is to take the passenger to hospital by air.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05But landing a helicopter in the middle of a city

0:18:05 > 0:18:07is a tricky operation.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11Probably going to take this chap, so... Land there?

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Yeah. If you're in communication with them, yeah.

0:18:18 > 0:18:19He's the most serious, isn't he?

0:18:19 > 0:18:23I don't know. I do not know what's going on in that car, to be honest.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26- I've only looked at this gentleman here.- Right, OK.

0:18:27 > 0:18:31There's a lot still to do here. And Lindsey calls home.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34PHONE RINGS OUT

0:18:34 > 0:18:36"Go ahead, dear."

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Can you ring our Emma, please,

0:18:38 > 0:18:41and tell her one of them's going to have to pick Alex up from school

0:18:41 > 0:18:45because I'm not going to get away from here quickly.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49It's not the easiest job to balance work-home life

0:18:49 > 0:18:52because on any day, we never know

0:18:52 > 0:18:54whether we're going to finish or not.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58So you always have to have a contingency plan for that.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01It doesn't make it easy because we work long hours,

0:19:01 > 0:19:05but my family have grown up with that,

0:19:05 > 0:19:07so they don't know any different, really.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10Excuse me! Can I have everyone behind this line, please?

0:19:10 > 0:19:13Everyone behind this line now! Thank you very much.

0:19:15 > 0:19:19Some of our time, unfortunately, is having to be tied up

0:19:19 > 0:19:21dealing with people that are getting too close to the scene

0:19:21 > 0:19:23and clearly need to be kept back.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27Not only for safety reasons, because of glass and debris,

0:19:27 > 0:19:30but also for the injured parties' privacy, basically.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32They're still in vehicles trapped

0:19:32 > 0:19:35and they don't really want people filming them on mobile phones

0:19:35 > 0:19:39and being uploaded onto sites such as YouTube for the world to see.

0:19:39 > 0:19:40It's improper.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43So we try and prevent that as much as we can by getting a cordon.

0:19:45 > 0:19:51The driver of one of the cars the Ford Focus crashed into is finally cut free.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54As is the badly injured passenger Lindsey cared for.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57The paramedics have stabilised the passenger.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01And, with the road cleared, he can be driven to hospital.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02As a roads policing officer,

0:20:02 > 0:20:06the amount of serious injuries and fatalities that you deal with,

0:20:06 > 0:20:08it does toughen you.

0:20:08 > 0:20:14It has to do, otherwise you wouldn't be able to deal with the situations.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16I do get quite emotional sometimes,

0:20:16 > 0:20:20but I do have to put that on hold.

0:20:20 > 0:20:25The driver who caused the accident is now under arrest.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28He's got minor injuries and is also taken off to hospital.

0:20:29 > 0:20:33He's driven with a complete disregard for anybody else on the road.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37And if this had involved any sort of motorcycle or pedestrian,

0:20:37 > 0:20:39I think the outcome would have been very, very different.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44Chillingly, Andy discovers the driver has done this before.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50I understand he's a banned driver following a fatal traffic collision.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53So he could be going back to prison, hopefully.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55These drivers should not be on the road.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59They have no care or compassion for any other road users whatsoever.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02We need to continue to get them off the road

0:21:02 > 0:21:05and let the courts imprison them.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10Just seven miles west, near Wakefield, is the M1.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13Acting Sergeant Gary Panther

0:21:13 > 0:21:16and PC Mick Roffe of the regional road crime team

0:21:16 > 0:21:19are beginning their 10-hour shift in an unmarked car.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25- That Golf in lane one over there. - Yes, yes.

0:21:25 > 0:21:29This car may help them get closer to criminals without being spotted,

0:21:29 > 0:21:33but they believe that something less tangible is what really counts.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36Everybody has an ability to sense something isn't right.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39That gut feeling where you think, "this just doesn't feel right."

0:21:39 > 0:21:42Yes, definitely, definitely, definitely.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45On the outskirts of the city, near the M1 junction,

0:21:45 > 0:21:46their instincts kick in

0:21:46 > 0:21:49after spotting a suspicious-looking vehicle.

0:21:49 > 0:21:50And they decide to follow it.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53You look at it and you assess it.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56Straightaway, you can tell, even at a distance, for this Golf,

0:21:56 > 0:22:00from that distance, you just know, you know, that's just not right.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02That's worth a second look, if you like.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05And then, from then on, that instinct tingles.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10It's just a vehicle that is commonly used

0:22:10 > 0:22:12by criminality in the area, that's all.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15A Golf, blacked-out windows, you can't really see who's in it.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18So it's always worth a little look to see who's using it, really.

0:22:22 > 0:22:23INDISTINCT RADIO

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Yeah, run us one PNC, please.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Out the window.

0:22:28 > 0:22:29Just on Flanshaw Way.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32I was probably about four or five

0:22:32 > 0:22:35when I thought about being a police officer.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40It's just the only job I can see myself doing.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44Even at that young age, it just interested me. Um...

0:22:44 > 0:22:47The unfortunate thing, I had to wait so long until I were old enough.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54Gary and Mick have a reputation

0:22:54 > 0:22:56for getting results along the M1 corridor

0:22:56 > 0:22:57hunting down law breakers.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02Being a copper is a job that is needed.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05And somebody's got to stand up and be counted.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07Somebody's got to put themselves forward,

0:23:07 > 0:23:11put themselves in harm's way to make sure other people

0:23:11 > 0:23:12are looked after in society.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18A flash of the blue lights tell the driver of the GTI to pull over.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22He's off, lad. Come on.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24So I sit there thinking, I'm not going to get out and walk.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26It's a bit of a Mexican standoff.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29I'm not going to get out and walk because I don't think you'll stop.

0:23:33 > 0:23:37And lo and behold, his will broke before ours and off he went.

0:23:39 > 0:23:40X-ray Tango, Sierra two.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Gary and Mick's instincts have paid off.

0:23:47 > 0:23:48X-ray Tango, Sierra two, urgent.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51Now they need backup.

0:23:54 > 0:24:00Sierra two, we have a vehicle failing to stop on Flanshaw Lane.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02It is safe to continue at this time.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03We're double crewed,

0:24:03 > 0:24:06TPAC trained in an unmarked vehicle fitted with lights and sirens.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09Can we have authority for TPAC, please.

0:24:09 > 0:24:10You hear the term TPAC used a lot

0:24:10 > 0:24:12because it's an abbreviation of the tactics we use,

0:24:12 > 0:24:14which are Tactical Pursuit And Containment.

0:24:14 > 0:24:16We are in a pursuit situation with a vehicle.

0:24:16 > 0:24:20Can we have authority to continue TPAC? Is 99 available?

0:24:20 > 0:24:24The role that I adopted is the role of ground commander.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26There is a ground commander in a pursuit

0:24:26 > 0:24:28and an incident commander in a pursuit.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31The incident commander has overall view and control of the pursuit.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34They are in the control room and they use my commentary,

0:24:34 > 0:24:36so what I am saying back to them,

0:24:36 > 0:24:38to make a decision on whether

0:24:38 > 0:24:41they are going to allow the pursuit to continue or not.

0:24:41 > 0:24:42We are left, left on to Bailey Road.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46Speed is 70. It is safe to continue at this time.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49INDISTINCT RADIO

0:24:51 > 0:24:57Yes, yes, we are still Batley Road, generally back towards Dewsbury.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00While they wait for the decision to continue or stand down,

0:25:00 > 0:25:03they are doing all they can to keep up.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08Yes, yes, that's acknowledged. We are overtaking vehicles

0:25:08 > 0:25:10wrong side of the road on Batley Road.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13He knows he's struggling to get away.

0:25:13 > 0:25:17And you could see that he'd started to... His risk started to go up.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21Back to the correct. Speed is 70 and increasing.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Is 99 available and adopt to the area, please?

0:25:25 > 0:25:2899 is the call sign of the Air Support unit.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31But police helicopters are a scarce resource.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33But it's the only way they've got

0:25:33 > 0:25:35of guaranteeing they don't lose the GTI.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42He certainly knows that there will be a point where it will be called off.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44And he knows if that can happen

0:25:44 > 0:25:47before the helicopter gets there, he's going to get away.

0:25:49 > 0:25:54The cops are trained to drive safely at speed. The GTI driver is not.

0:25:56 > 0:25:58He's pushing himself and the car to the limit

0:25:58 > 0:26:00and chancing a deadly head-on collision.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05You've got to look at yourself.

0:26:05 > 0:26:09If I continue to chase him here, am I putting other people in danger?

0:26:09 > 0:26:12Is my presence forcing him to do that?

0:26:12 > 0:26:16As they race through a small town 50mph above the 30 limit,

0:26:16 > 0:26:17the stakes are rising.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20You can see 30mph speed limits approaching.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23My worst fear is that there's somebody crossing the road.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25There's going to be pedestrian crossings,

0:26:25 > 0:26:27there's going to be slow-moving traffic.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30Concern is mounting.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32Unsuspecting pedestrians and drivers

0:26:32 > 0:26:34could easily be caught up in the pursuit.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39The cops need to stop the GTI before it becomes too dangerous

0:26:39 > 0:26:41and they are ordered to stand down.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47Just a couple of miles north

0:26:47 > 0:26:49is the crossing point of the M62 and the M1.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54Drivers from all over the country converge at this busy junction.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00Bravo Tango 8-0, can you book us on fleet 138, please. Good afternoon.

0:27:01 > 0:27:05Yeah, we'll make out to the job at junction 33.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10PCs Doug Lofthouse and Dale Anderson work from Wakefield.

0:27:10 > 0:27:15Starting their shift, they are heading to an incident on the M62.

0:27:15 > 0:27:21This job on, on this day, was very unique in what happened,

0:27:21 > 0:27:24the circumstances and how it,

0:27:24 > 0:27:27how the job really moved on or progressed.

0:27:27 > 0:27:32This isn't an everyday, run-of-the-mill type of job.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35Yeah, we've just been called by the Highways Agency,

0:27:35 > 0:27:38who have earlier attended a damage-only collision

0:27:38 > 0:27:41involving a gentleman who we believe to be in his 90s.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48Officers from the Highways Agency called the police

0:27:48 > 0:27:50when they came across 91-year-old Bill

0:27:50 > 0:27:54trying to change his wheel after he hit an HGV in his car.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57- Hello, Bill.- Hello, son.- Are you all right? How are you doing?

0:27:57 > 0:27:58Well, I'm all right.

0:28:00 > 0:28:04The reason we're here is because the gentlemen who have been helping you

0:28:04 > 0:28:07are concerned about getting you home and getting the vehicle recovered.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09Oh, no, no. If I can get the front wheel done,

0:28:09 > 0:28:13I've got a spare wheel there and I'll carry on then to Holland.

0:28:13 > 0:28:15Let's have a look at your car, then.

0:28:15 > 0:28:19Bill is en route to Holland, and is determined to get there.

0:28:20 > 0:28:21Let's go and take a...take a look.

0:28:21 > 0:28:25He says...He thinks it's driveable.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29I said to come with us so I can point out anything to him.

0:28:29 > 0:28:34Bill's brush with the HGV has torn up the side of his car.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39You're not going to be able to drive that, you know.

0:28:39 > 0:28:43He's maybe from a generation which, it'll physically work, it'll do.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47Make do and mend and such.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49Unfortunately, we've got more than

0:28:49 > 0:28:52just sort of a commitment to help Bill out.

0:28:52 > 0:28:55We've got a responsibility to make sure what he's doing

0:28:55 > 0:28:59is going to be as safe as possible for, for everyone else.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Why?

0:29:01 > 0:29:03Because all these bits, all these sharp parts,

0:29:03 > 0:29:05that's what we'd call a dangerous part.

0:29:05 > 0:29:10Yeah, well, once I get it to Holland, I'll get it done.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13You can't drive this over to t'ferry, I'm afraid.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15He wanted to drive off.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18He thought that if he just changed his tyre, he could drive off.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21At the time, we were obviously advising him against it,

0:29:21 > 0:29:24but we didn't really know why he were in such a hurry to get off.

0:29:24 > 0:29:26- Well, what am I going to do now, then?- Right.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29It'll have to be recovered and repaired properly.

0:29:29 > 0:29:31But if you speak to your insurance,

0:29:31 > 0:29:33they may be able to provide you with a courtesy car today.

0:29:34 > 0:29:36But the quicker we get it done,

0:29:36 > 0:29:38the more chance you've got of getting another car today.

0:29:38 > 0:29:42Let's go back to the vehicles, where we can talk safely.

0:29:42 > 0:29:44Doug and Dale need to find out

0:29:44 > 0:29:46if anyone can pick Bill up and take him home.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50Have you got no family, then, Bill?

0:29:50 > 0:29:52I've got no family at all, no.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54- None at all?- They're all dead.

0:29:54 > 0:29:55Right. Bloody hell.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58- Got no kids or owt like that? - No children, no.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00Well, I've got one son, but he's dead an' all.

0:30:00 > 0:30:03- Gee-whiz! - He died about six months ago.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06- Right. I'm sorry to hear that. - So I'm on me own now.

0:30:06 > 0:30:10He'd outlived his wife, he'd outlived his children.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13Which must be not a nice thing when you're 90,

0:30:13 > 0:30:17or in your 90s, with absolutely no family around you.

0:30:17 > 0:30:20But I take my hat off to him.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23To think that he's 91 with no family at all

0:30:23 > 0:30:25and he's obviously on this big adventure.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28- What were you going to Holland for? - Pardon?

0:30:28 > 0:30:30What are you going to Holland for?

0:30:30 > 0:30:33- I'm going for five weeks.- Ah, right.

0:30:33 > 0:30:37- It's, er...it's the Parachute Regiment.- Ah, right.

0:30:37 > 0:30:41Every now and again, they have a do at Christmas.

0:30:42 > 0:30:46Bill's a veteran of one of World War II's most heroic engagements,

0:30:46 > 0:30:47the Battle of Arnhem.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50And he's on his way to a reunion

0:30:50 > 0:30:53with the last of his surviving comrades.

0:30:53 > 0:30:55- What time's your ferry, Bill? - Pardon?

0:30:55 > 0:30:57What time's the ferry?

0:30:57 > 0:30:59Nine o'clock. I've got to be there at seven.

0:30:59 > 0:31:02Right. So we've still got a few hours to get you there, haven't we?

0:31:02 > 0:31:05What we're going to do, we'll ring your insurance

0:31:05 > 0:31:08and get a claim rolling for you and get you recovered.

0:31:09 > 0:31:12I've got one of your customers with us

0:31:12 > 0:31:14who's had a collision with a heavy goods vehicle.

0:31:14 > 0:31:15He's 91 year old.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18Has this chap got any kind of courtesy car cover?

0:31:18 > 0:31:22Right. So the chances of him getting his ferry today are going to be slim.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25We didn't think we were going to be able to get him on his ferry.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28We didn't want to leave him stranded in the middle of West Yorkshire.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32He's sort of, like, halfway between home, a bit closer to Hull.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34So, you don't have any provisions at all

0:31:34 > 0:31:37to be able to get him back home through his insurance?

0:31:37 > 0:31:40Can you just bear with me 30 seconds while I speak to my colleague?

0:31:40 > 0:31:45The courtesy car won't cover him to go to Holland, not even for a day.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48And all they do is they take the car to a secure compound,

0:31:48 > 0:31:49to the nearest one here,

0:31:49 > 0:31:52then repair it and deliver it back to his home address.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54They have no provisions

0:31:54 > 0:31:56because they've got no insurance cover to take him home.

0:31:58 > 0:32:02- Can you hear me all right, Bill? - Yes.- Can you hear me all right? Yep?

0:32:02 > 0:32:04Right. What's happening,

0:32:04 > 0:32:07your insurance company are going to come and get your car.

0:32:07 > 0:32:10They're going to come and get your car.

0:32:10 > 0:32:12But they're not going to give you another one today.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15So it's going to be a case of you waiting for your car to be repaired

0:32:15 > 0:32:18before you can get to Holland.

0:32:18 > 0:32:21They won't repair that in a day.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23No. It's going to be a good few days.

0:32:23 > 0:32:25It gets worse, all right.

0:32:25 > 0:32:30When they recover your car, they won't recover you.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33Is there any way I can get a car to go up...to carry on with?

0:32:33 > 0:32:36My suggestion...would have been

0:32:36 > 0:32:38to take you maybe to Leeds train station

0:32:38 > 0:32:41so you could get a train home.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44But if you're wanting to maybe hire a car...

0:32:44 > 0:32:47If you can get me a car, I'll pay for it.

0:32:47 > 0:32:50- I'm not worried about that. - Right, we could maybe...

0:32:50 > 0:32:54- Have you got your driving licence with you?- Yeah.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57Yeah. We could maybe take him down to Enterprise or something.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00If you... Your insurance won't pay for it,

0:33:00 > 0:33:02but we can take you to a hire car place if you like?

0:33:02 > 0:33:05- I'll do that. - You want to do that?- Yeah.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08His determination, his courage,

0:33:08 > 0:33:10his grit, really,

0:33:10 > 0:33:12he wanted to get to Hull.

0:33:12 > 0:33:13He had to get on that ferry.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16There was no other way around it, really.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19Doug and Dale are going beyond the call of duty

0:33:19 > 0:33:21for this determined war veteran.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24We'll see what we can sort out for you, all right.

0:33:24 > 0:33:25But we're not making any promises.

0:33:25 > 0:33:29The problem they have is finding a car-hire company

0:33:29 > 0:33:32who'll rent a vehicle to a 91-year-old

0:33:32 > 0:33:35to take overseas for five weeks,

0:33:35 > 0:33:38and doing it in time to get Bill on his ferry to Holland.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44Near Dewsbury, Acting Sergeant Gary Panther

0:33:44 > 0:33:48and PC Mick Roffe have a more immediate problem.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51They've been tailing a GTI at high speed for five minutes

0:33:51 > 0:33:54and the driver is becoming increasingly reckless.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59They know really what we do and how we're trained.

0:33:59 > 0:34:00And they know the more they push it,

0:34:00 > 0:34:03the sillier the risks they take, we won't follow.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06Pursuit to get units to Leeds Road, please.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10We are now approaching Leeds Road at Dewsbury.

0:34:10 > 0:34:12Pursuit get local units into area, please,

0:34:12 > 0:34:15as well, in case he does decamp. Is 99 lifting for this?

0:34:15 > 0:34:1899 is the call sign for Air Support.

0:34:18 > 0:34:20And they are catching up with the ground pursuit.

0:34:20 > 0:34:24"7-0, back to correct. Safe to continue this time."

0:34:24 > 0:34:28Pursuit, we are continuing. We are now on Haybeck Lane,

0:34:28 > 0:34:32generally still towards Leeds Road, Dewsbury Road in Dewsbury.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36Just approaching Leeds Road now. Stand by for direction.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38We are continuing straight across Leeds Road.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Lights are green, it is safe to continue.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43Overtaking vehicles the wrong side of the road.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45Speed 70. Back to the correct.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47Safe to continue at this time.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50Get stinger units to Batley if we can, please.

0:34:50 > 0:34:52We're generally towards Batley.

0:34:52 > 0:34:57In his desperation to get away, the Golf driver clips another car.

0:34:57 > 0:35:01And it's contact with another member of the public's vehicle.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03As Gary and Mick slow down to avoid doing the same thing,

0:35:03 > 0:35:05they lose the GTI.

0:35:06 > 0:35:10To me, in my mind, immediately, I'm thinking as ground commander,

0:35:10 > 0:35:14"This guy is going to stop at nothing to get away from us now."

0:35:14 > 0:35:17And at that point, we backed, we backed off.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20It is continuing. I think it is only minor damage.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23We are generally towards Bradford Road still.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28- Lost him, mate.- Keep going. He won't have turned off at that speed.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31Those very few seconds immediately after, you're thinking,

0:35:31 > 0:35:34this is finished. They're going to abandon the car and run off

0:35:34 > 0:35:37and we'll never find out who they were or what they've done.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40He's up there! Spin it around.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44Right, right into the estate, and we're on to Clutton Street.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46We're on to Clutton Street into the estate

0:35:46 > 0:35:49and it's a temporary loss at this time. Is 99 overhead at all?

0:35:50 > 0:35:53Luckily, the helicopter arrived just in the nick of time.

0:35:53 > 0:35:54I mean, just in the nick of time.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58"Yeah, looks like a bailout coming up."

0:36:00 > 0:36:02Yeah, 99, we've lost him near West Street,

0:36:02 > 0:36:05Clutton Street off Soothill Lane.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08It's an offside junction as you're travelling towards Batley.

0:36:08 > 0:36:10He's in that estate somewhere.

0:36:10 > 0:36:13Both the driver and the passenger flee from the Golf.

0:36:13 > 0:36:18"Decamp from the, er...the black vehicle."

0:36:23 > 0:36:25"Give me your location, please."

0:36:30 > 0:36:33And there were a few seconds where there were very little said.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36I think the helicopter were looking around for him.

0:36:37 > 0:36:41It's not nicked, it's decamped off Soothill Lane somewhere.

0:36:41 > 0:36:43Andy, are you with it at all?

0:36:43 > 0:36:45What's that, Mick?

0:36:45 > 0:36:4999, where's he gone? We're with t'car now. It's abandoned.

0:36:49 > 0:36:52Near Grace Leather Lane.

0:36:52 > 0:36:55"It's coming back out."

0:36:55 > 0:36:59"And the Golf is straight ahead. The Golf is straight ahead."

0:36:59 > 0:37:01The driver has gone to ground,

0:37:01 > 0:37:03but Air Support is tracking the passenger.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08"We've lost the driver, but there's someone on the right."

0:37:08 > 0:37:11"He's just crossing 100 yards up in grey.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13"Grey trousers, grey top."

0:37:13 > 0:37:16And Gary and Mick are on to him.

0:37:16 > 0:37:18He's either going to see the police car and run

0:37:18 > 0:37:21or he's going to try and bluff it out.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24This guy decided he was going to try and act completely innocent.

0:37:27 > 0:37:29Come here.

0:37:29 > 0:37:31All right, all right, all right, all right.

0:37:32 > 0:37:35You're under arrest. Suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38- Eh?- Stand still. Don't mess about. Do not mess about!

0:37:38 > 0:37:43Get someone to t'car, we've got t'passenger under arrest.

0:37:46 > 0:37:48INDISTINCT RADIO

0:37:49 > 0:37:53With the passenger under arrest, the hunt now turns to the driver,

0:37:53 > 0:37:56who, despite Air Support and officers on the ground,

0:37:56 > 0:37:58seems to have disappeared.

0:38:00 > 0:38:05"From 99, Apologies for that. Lost driver. He crouched down somewhere."

0:38:05 > 0:38:06"X-ray Tango 1-8, that's received."

0:38:10 > 0:38:14West of Dewsbury, the M62 cuts through West Yorkshire.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17As it rises up through the Pennine hills,

0:38:17 > 0:38:19it becomes Britain's highest motorway.

0:38:19 > 0:38:23This is motorway cop Martin Willis' territory.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26That stretch of the motorway up there towards junction 22,

0:38:26 > 0:38:29we call it Windy Hill. Aptly, aptly named.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34It is prone to high winds, particularly crosswinds, as well.

0:38:34 > 0:38:38You do, because of that, you do get large vehicles,

0:38:38 > 0:38:4040, 44-tonne vehicles,

0:38:40 > 0:38:42that are affected by the high winds.

0:38:42 > 0:38:46And they can get blown, um... blown off on to the hard shoulder.

0:38:48 > 0:38:51Martin's teamed up with PC Lindsey Pickles.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54We've got another one here.

0:38:54 > 0:38:56As they reach the highest point of the motorway,

0:38:56 > 0:38:59they spot a car on the hard shoulder.

0:39:00 > 0:39:01As we're coming along, we saw a chap

0:39:01 > 0:39:04trying to change the offside wheel.

0:39:04 > 0:39:06The wheel that's closest to lane one.

0:39:06 > 0:39:09Knelt down on the edge of the hard shoulder

0:39:09 > 0:39:12with his backside sticking out into lane one.

0:39:12 > 0:39:14It's extremely dangerous doing that side

0:39:14 > 0:39:17without anybody watching your back. OK?

0:39:17 > 0:39:20What you should have done... I appreciate it's up on the jack now,

0:39:20 > 0:39:22you should have got it as close to here as possible.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24I've already done that.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26- Sorry?- I'm just...

0:39:26 > 0:39:28It don't matter. You're bent over there,

0:39:28 > 0:39:32all it needs is a lorry to come down on to the hard shoulder

0:39:32 > 0:39:35or a car not watching what they're doing,

0:39:35 > 0:39:36that's it, the end of you.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39I'm just trying to protect you, save you from being killed. OK?

0:39:39 > 0:39:42In the last ten years,

0:39:42 > 0:39:46there have been over 70 people killed on Britain's hard shoulders.

0:39:46 > 0:39:48And the dangers are only too real for Martin

0:39:48 > 0:39:50and every officer in West Yorkshire.

0:39:51 > 0:39:56It was certainly brought home in 2011

0:39:56 > 0:39:58when one of our colleagues, PC Mark Goodlad,

0:39:58 > 0:40:00was tragically killed on the hard shoulder,

0:40:00 > 0:40:04again, helping a motorist, helping somebody who was, um...

0:40:04 > 0:40:06who'd broken down, who, you know, needed help.

0:40:06 > 0:40:11And it is one of the worst places you can work on.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14The driver's wife and three small children

0:40:14 > 0:40:16are oblivious to the danger.

0:40:16 > 0:40:20And Martin has got to get them to safety as quickly as possible.

0:40:20 > 0:40:23What we'll do now, we'll get them to stand behind here.

0:40:23 > 0:40:26My colleague will wait there and I'll try and help you fix your tyre.

0:40:32 > 0:40:35I thought, well, if I can get this tyre done, put on quickly,

0:40:35 > 0:40:38we'll get them moved and then we've taken away the danger.

0:40:42 > 0:40:45It's not a good thing to do, changing a wheel on the hard shoulder.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48And even with someone as a lookout, it's still a scary thing to do.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53A split second of not looking the right way

0:40:53 > 0:40:56and not watching what you're doing

0:40:56 > 0:40:59and that can be it, it's gone.

0:40:59 > 0:41:03But as Martin risks his life replacing the punctured tyre,

0:41:03 > 0:41:05he discovers a serious problem.

0:41:06 > 0:41:09Where's the other nut?

0:41:09 > 0:41:11- Where's...?- I just bought it one month ago.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13- You just bought it?- Yeah.

0:41:13 > 0:41:15- One month ago.- Right.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20What we're going to have to do is get this tyre on as best we can

0:41:20 > 0:41:23and get them off the motorway.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25It's not safe to continue with a wheel nut missing.

0:41:27 > 0:41:29The driver claims that he bought the car

0:41:29 > 0:41:31with the wheel nut already missing,

0:41:31 > 0:41:32but there's an even bigger issue.

0:41:34 > 0:41:38So they've got three kids, three children,

0:41:38 > 0:41:42and no suitable child restraints.

0:41:44 > 0:41:46Right. We've got a big problem here.

0:41:46 > 0:41:50Your car's not safe because there's a wheel nut missing.

0:41:50 > 0:41:51- Yeah.- OK.

0:41:51 > 0:41:56And you've got no proper child restraints for your children.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58How old are your children?

0:41:58 > 0:42:02One is nearly three, one is one and a half, and one is six.

0:42:02 > 0:42:04They need to be in proper child restraints.

0:42:04 > 0:42:06They're not tall enough, they're not old enough.

0:42:06 > 0:42:09I was angry. Very angry.

0:42:09 > 0:42:13You feel, being a parent yourself, those poor children,

0:42:13 > 0:42:15they deserve better.

0:42:15 > 0:42:19And, you think, well, why can't they look after them properly?

0:42:19 > 0:42:22Why are they doing this? Why are they putting their family at risk?

0:42:22 > 0:42:24Is it stupidity?

0:42:24 > 0:42:26Off the motorway and out of harm's way,

0:42:26 > 0:42:28Lindsey has some questions for the driver.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31I take it my colleague has explained to you

0:42:31 > 0:42:34the serious nature of what we're talking about,

0:42:34 > 0:42:36the fact that the children are not in car seats.

0:42:36 > 0:42:38Do you have some car seats available anywhere?

0:42:38 > 0:42:40- At home.- At home?

0:42:40 > 0:42:43What's the reason you've not put your child seats in the car today?

0:42:43 > 0:42:45- We totally forgot, to be honest. - Right.

0:42:45 > 0:42:48- I'm very sorry about that.- Right.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51I appreciate that, but I don't want you to be sorry to me.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53I don't want to be dealing with an accident

0:42:53 > 0:42:57that involves your children of a serious nature.

0:42:57 > 0:42:58And when they're sat in a car like that,

0:42:58 > 0:43:01they're going to be through the windscreen.

0:43:01 > 0:43:03I know you would not be able to live with yourself

0:43:03 > 0:43:05if anything happened to those children.

0:43:05 > 0:43:07So I'm not going to lecture you any more.

0:43:07 > 0:43:10The way we'll deal with it is by way of a fixed penalty ticket

0:43:10 > 0:43:13because you're failing to have your children in a correct child seat.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17- Can you let it go, darling, please? - No.- No, no, no.- No.

0:43:17 > 0:43:18- No chance.- No.

0:43:18 > 0:43:20The education message seemed wasted on him.

0:43:20 > 0:43:23And again, that frustrates me.

0:43:23 > 0:43:26Because I'm thinking, that message isn't getting home.

0:43:27 > 0:43:30Rather than leave them stranded, the safest course of action

0:43:30 > 0:43:33is to get everyone home as quickly and as safely as possible,

0:43:33 > 0:43:36via a route that avoids the motorway.

0:43:36 > 0:43:40Hello. This needs to go across here, OK?

0:43:40 > 0:43:42Just in case.

0:43:42 > 0:43:45It never ceases to amaze me that people still, still do it.

0:43:45 > 0:43:48Sometimes we see them with four or five children in the back unrestrained.

0:43:48 > 0:43:51But it's unbelievable. It really is.

0:43:51 > 0:43:53I just hope he learns his lesson.

0:43:56 > 0:44:0020 miles east along the M62 near Wakefield,

0:44:00 > 0:44:02PCs Doug Lofthouse and Dale Anderson

0:44:02 > 0:44:06are trying to get a stranded 91-year-old war hero

0:44:06 > 0:44:08to a veterans' reunion in Holland.

0:44:08 > 0:44:11Would you like to think if it were your dad, granddad

0:44:11 > 0:44:14at the side of the road, would you like to think

0:44:14 > 0:44:16we were trying to help him out? I suppose so.

0:44:16 > 0:44:19Bottom line is, the guy's had a minor bump.

0:44:19 > 0:44:22It's really important to him that he gets there,

0:44:22 > 0:44:24more important than the car.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27So we're going to get him a hire car

0:44:27 > 0:44:30which will let him go to Holland,

0:44:30 > 0:44:33which I'm not sure whether the companies will allow that.

0:44:33 > 0:44:35Get all his things there and hopefully get him on his way.

0:44:35 > 0:44:38Whether we'll do it or not remains to be seen.

0:44:38 > 0:44:42I'd suggest we've probably got about an hour and a half,

0:44:42 > 0:44:44hour and 45 minutes to get him back on the road

0:44:44 > 0:44:46or he's going to miss the ferry crossing.

0:44:48 > 0:44:49Bill's unroadworthy car

0:44:49 > 0:44:53is packed full of supplies for his five-week trip

0:44:53 > 0:44:56and Dale has called in a second police car to help move it all.

0:44:56 > 0:44:59Do you hire cars out to take to Europe for five weeks?

0:45:01 > 0:45:04The biggest problem we've got at the moment

0:45:04 > 0:45:07is finding a hire car company

0:45:07 > 0:45:10that's willing to, like, let somebody

0:45:10 > 0:45:12who's going to walk in off the street today

0:45:12 > 0:45:16take one of their cars to another country for five weeks.

0:45:16 > 0:45:18So that's what Doug's trying to sort out.

0:45:18 > 0:45:21Oh, right. So you don't do it for five weeks, then?

0:45:23 > 0:45:25We're getting there.

0:45:26 > 0:45:28Can you try and find me a telephone number, please, for Avis Rent A Car?

0:45:36 > 0:45:39We've got all his belongings

0:45:39 > 0:45:42and half of the local convenience store loaded up now.

0:45:42 > 0:45:44He's certainly not going to go without

0:45:44 > 0:45:47ready salted Walkers for the next five weeks.

0:45:47 > 0:45:51Doug's had no luck finding a rental car for Bill over the phone

0:45:51 > 0:45:53and time's running out.

0:45:53 > 0:45:55So they decide to head to the nearest rental company

0:45:55 > 0:45:58to try and sort something out in person.

0:45:58 > 0:46:00Let's get you to this hire car company, then, Bill.

0:46:03 > 0:46:05It was just...

0:46:05 > 0:46:09a feeling about the entire, the entire meeting with Bill, really,

0:46:09 > 0:46:13that it was something a little bit different.

0:46:13 > 0:46:17And obviously, his...drive, for want of a better word,

0:46:17 > 0:46:21to, to get to his destination was sort of limitless.

0:46:21 > 0:46:24How long were you in the Paras?

0:46:24 > 0:46:27- I was in 1944.- Ah, right.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30I was six years in the army, then, from then.

0:46:31 > 0:46:36And I was in the T...been in the TA from then until six years ago.

0:46:36 > 0:46:38- You were in the TA six years ago? - Yeah.

0:46:38 > 0:46:42Wow! How many jumps have you made in your lifetime?

0:46:42 > 0:46:43About 60.

0:46:45 > 0:46:50If they'll insure us now, we're going to do a jump this year.

0:46:50 > 0:46:52DALE LAUGHS If what?

0:46:52 > 0:46:55- Where? - If they'll insure us.

0:46:55 > 0:46:57- Do a jump?- What, over in Holland?

0:46:57 > 0:47:00- Yeah.- A parachute jump. A parachute jump?

0:47:00 > 0:47:02You're going to do a parachute jump if you can?

0:47:02 > 0:47:06To this day, I still find it amazing.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08I hope, one, that I live till I'm 90 something,

0:47:08 > 0:47:11and, two, that I'm fit enough and well enough

0:47:11 > 0:47:13to even think about doing a parachute jump.

0:47:13 > 0:47:15Truly amazing.

0:47:15 > 0:47:16Good on ya!

0:47:16 > 0:47:18It's all good fun.

0:47:18 > 0:47:19I think it's amazing.

0:47:19 > 0:47:24Obviously, you've fought in World War II

0:47:24 > 0:47:26and you're still out there parachuting.

0:47:28 > 0:47:30There's nothing in it.

0:47:30 > 0:47:34Bill might be able to get insurance to jump out of a plane,

0:47:34 > 0:47:37but will a hire car company let him take a vehicle for five weeks

0:47:37 > 0:47:40overseas in time to get his ferry?

0:47:42 > 0:47:45It's going to be tight, but hopefully Bill will do it

0:47:45 > 0:47:47without having to break any speed limits, eh?

0:47:56 > 0:47:58The car's not nicked, is it?

0:48:00 > 0:48:02- Is the car nicked? - Stand with him, stand with him.

0:48:02 > 0:48:05In an estate just off the M1 in Dewsbury,

0:48:05 > 0:48:07Acting Sergeant Gary Panther and PC Mick Roffe

0:48:07 > 0:48:11have caught the passenger of a car they've been pursuing.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13But the driver has vanished.

0:48:13 > 0:48:17It took a little bit of time for the dust to settle, if you like.

0:48:17 > 0:48:20And he hadn't been immediately caught, the driver.

0:48:20 > 0:48:24So we just asked the helicopter to say, "Look, go back.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26"Where did you last see him?"

0:48:26 > 0:48:29Because he's not disappeared down a manhole cover.

0:48:29 > 0:48:32"From 99, within the flats, we have got an open door.

0:48:32 > 0:48:34"We can't say that the driver went in there,

0:48:34 > 0:48:38"but we have got an open door in the flats just off Broomsdale Road."

0:48:40 > 0:48:42While Mick takes charge of the hunt for the driver,

0:48:42 > 0:48:44Gary has found the Golf.

0:48:45 > 0:48:47Car's been abandoned on Broomsdale Road.

0:48:52 > 0:48:55Keys are still in the ignition.

0:48:55 > 0:48:59I believe the helicopter have got a possible location for the other,

0:48:59 > 0:49:02so other officers are off to that location at the moment.

0:49:02 > 0:49:04I've just come to secure the vehicle

0:49:04 > 0:49:07so no offenders can come up to it and drive off in it.

0:49:12 > 0:49:13600 feet above them,

0:49:13 > 0:49:17the cops are searching the area the driver was last seen in.

0:49:17 > 0:49:19"Lost driver. He crouched down somewhere.

0:49:19 > 0:49:21"We've just got thermal come online now."

0:49:21 > 0:49:23But it's a warren,

0:49:23 > 0:49:26and even their thermal-imaging camera can't detect anything.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30"To that officer who is coming back towards the aircraft,

0:49:30 > 0:49:33"it was the first buildings you checked, just to your rear now.

0:49:33 > 0:49:36"The ones with the green door, then the ones with the red door.

0:49:36 > 0:49:38"He disappeared around there somewhere.

0:49:38 > 0:49:40"Your colleague's just checking those now."

0:49:42 > 0:49:45Gary's keen to discover why the driver of the GTI

0:49:45 > 0:49:47was so desperate to escape.

0:49:48 > 0:49:49Strong links to drug supply,

0:49:49 > 0:49:52so potentially, the occupants could have had some on them

0:49:52 > 0:49:54or there could be some still in the vehicle.

0:49:54 > 0:49:57So we'll be forced to search them and seize whatever's inside,

0:49:57 > 0:49:58if, in fact, there is anything.

0:50:01 > 0:50:04More officers are called to the scene to help with the hunt for the driver.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07But they don't have an exact description of him.

0:50:09 > 0:50:12And innocent passers-by are adding to the confusion.

0:50:18 > 0:50:20All them bottles will need seizing.

0:50:20 > 0:50:22All them bottles in there will need seizing.

0:50:22 > 0:50:25Obviously, they've run off from the vehicle.

0:50:25 > 0:50:30When they're interviewed, they might deny being in that vehicle.

0:50:30 > 0:50:34So for us to get some evidence, DNA evidence from that,

0:50:34 > 0:50:38whether it be a drinks bottle that's in there,

0:50:38 > 0:50:40fingerprint evidence,

0:50:40 > 0:50:43it could be a cigarette butt that's been left in the ashtray.

0:50:43 > 0:50:47If we can seize those and it comes back with their DNA on,

0:50:47 > 0:50:50it lends itself again to the fact that they have been in that vehicle.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54An eyewitness comes forward with some information.

0:50:55 > 0:50:58"X-ray Tango Sierra two, from a member of public,

0:50:58 > 0:50:59"only two males were in this vehicle.

0:50:59 > 0:51:02"The driver was an Asian male wearing a light-blue hooded top."

0:51:05 > 0:51:08"He ran round towards the rear of those flats.

0:51:08 > 0:51:10"That's where we last saw him."

0:51:10 > 0:51:13Mick is determined to track his man down.

0:51:14 > 0:51:17I'm like a dog with a bone, really. I'll not let anything go.

0:51:17 > 0:51:22So I'm walking up towards a block of houses and the helicopter's saying,

0:51:22 > 0:51:25we last saw him round the back of that house and he hasn't come out.

0:51:25 > 0:51:28That's your first port of call. That was my first port of call.

0:51:28 > 0:51:30He's not there, he's not there, he was last seen here,

0:51:30 > 0:51:32he must be in here somewhere.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34"Towards the outhouse."

0:51:34 > 0:51:36Gary and another officer

0:51:36 > 0:51:38discover why the driver was so keen to get away.

0:51:38 > 0:51:41That's a drugs press. Drugs press, I think.

0:51:44 > 0:51:47- Oh, yeah, yeah. - Press there and there.

0:51:47 > 0:51:48But there's no gear at all.

0:51:48 > 0:51:50- Well...- Just residue.

0:51:50 > 0:51:54Looks like there's residue underneath it to me. Heroin residue.

0:51:54 > 0:51:56It looked like heroin dust.

0:51:56 > 0:52:00And inside the suitcase was a press,

0:52:00 > 0:52:05which is used to obviously compact the heroin

0:52:05 > 0:52:07into a solid block, as it were.

0:52:07 > 0:52:13Which is how it often gets transported from the bigger dealers.

0:52:13 > 0:52:16We looked at that and thought, this is a part of a bigger picture.

0:52:19 > 0:52:22100 yards away, Mick's searching the last of the flats.

0:52:24 > 0:52:27You can see the flat doors downstairs.

0:52:27 > 0:52:30Checked them immediately. They're locked and secured.

0:52:30 > 0:52:33I'm thinking, he's not in any of these.

0:52:33 > 0:52:37As I walked upstairs, only until I got to the top step,

0:52:37 > 0:52:41I turned and was confronted by him literally hiding in the corner.

0:52:41 > 0:52:43And I can see him hiding.

0:52:43 > 0:52:46Get some cops up here!

0:52:46 > 0:52:47Keep out your pockets.

0:52:47 > 0:52:50Drop your phone. Drop it!

0:52:50 > 0:52:52Drop your phone now. Do as you're told!

0:52:52 > 0:52:56In my eyes, at that moment in time, my life could have been in danger.

0:52:56 > 0:52:58Because his hands were hidden, he could have had a weapon.

0:52:58 > 0:53:01So I'm going to use whatever tools I have,

0:53:01 > 0:53:04which, ultimately, are my mouth

0:53:04 > 0:53:08and my personal protective equipment, to dominate that situation.

0:53:08 > 0:53:11That guy needs to know that we're in charge, and don't try anything.

0:53:11 > 0:53:14Right, you're locked up, pal, obviously.

0:53:14 > 0:53:15You got some ID on you?

0:53:15 > 0:53:20"Driver of the vehicle located in the flats."

0:53:21 > 0:53:23"That's received. Thank you.

0:53:23 > 0:53:26"All units, I believe we have both now."

0:53:26 > 0:53:28He's now been arrested by my colleagues.

0:53:28 > 0:53:30I'm just going to seize the relevant items

0:53:30 > 0:53:31that are obvious to us at the time.

0:53:31 > 0:53:35It will get recovered for forensic work.

0:53:35 > 0:53:39And hopefully, we can link him to the vehicle if he denies it.

0:53:39 > 0:53:44But I think we're quite adamant that it is the right driver.

0:53:44 > 0:53:46The helicopter's followed him away

0:53:46 > 0:53:48and he's been detained by officers close by,

0:53:48 > 0:53:51so all in all, a good job so far.

0:53:51 > 0:53:54That's 1-0 to us, innit?

0:53:54 > 0:53:55I think they're just idiots.

0:53:55 > 0:53:58I think they have no comprehension of what life's about.

0:53:58 > 0:54:01They have no comprehension of the value of life.

0:54:01 > 0:54:04They've not seen what I've seen, or my colleagues, for that matter.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07And I think if they had, and if they'd lived it,

0:54:07 > 0:54:08they wouldn't do it.

0:54:11 > 0:54:13- Come on, let's get you sorted.- OK.

0:54:14 > 0:54:18In Wakefield, Doug and Dale have arrived at a car hire company

0:54:18 > 0:54:22they hope will rent 91-year-old war veteran Bill a car

0:54:22 > 0:54:25to go to Holland for a regimental reunion.

0:54:25 > 0:54:27But they've got less than an hour to get him sorted,

0:54:27 > 0:54:29or he'll miss his ferry to Holland.

0:54:29 > 0:54:32Hello. Are we all right? You take yourself a seat, Bill.

0:54:32 > 0:54:34We've rung through, obviously, the call centre,

0:54:34 > 0:54:38and they've said you'll hire cars to let him go to the Continent,

0:54:38 > 0:54:40because he's wanting to go to Holland.

0:54:40 > 0:54:41- In our car?- Yeah.

0:54:41 > 0:54:44Yeah, my thoughts were, that due to his age,

0:54:44 > 0:54:47which I know we shouldn't judge people on their age,

0:54:47 > 0:54:49but due to his age, due to the fact that he'd had a collision,

0:54:49 > 0:54:53the hire company would be a little bit reluctant,

0:54:53 > 0:54:55shall we say, to lend him a car,

0:54:55 > 0:54:57especially when I'd spoken to somebody over the phone

0:54:57 > 0:54:59who said that we can only do it for four weeks.

0:54:59 > 0:55:02- How long are you going for? - It were going to be five.

0:55:02 > 0:55:04Five weeks? That's fine.

0:55:04 > 0:55:06- Is that fine?- Yeah.- Excellent.

0:55:06 > 0:55:08- I'll sort something out. Bear with me.- Cheers.

0:55:08 > 0:55:10They'll let you take one for five weeks.

0:55:10 > 0:55:14You can have a car for five weeks. So that's a bonus, isn't it?

0:55:14 > 0:55:15Yeah. That's great.

0:55:15 > 0:55:18Which one are you fancying - Jag, Mercedes?

0:55:18 > 0:55:21Which car are you fancying? The Jaguar?

0:55:21 > 0:55:24- I don't care what it is. - The cheapest?

0:55:24 > 0:55:26- I'll take yours.- You can have it.

0:55:27 > 0:55:30- They have got some nice motors.- That's what I was thinking.

0:55:32 > 0:55:34Just unload everything here then.

0:55:34 > 0:55:37One major hurdle's been overcome, but the clock is ticking.

0:55:37 > 0:55:39And once again, the cops busy themselves

0:55:39 > 0:55:43transferring Bill's supply of crisps and snacks to his new car.

0:55:46 > 0:55:50To make sure Bill's got the best chance of catching his ferry,

0:55:50 > 0:55:52Dale jumps in the hire car

0:55:52 > 0:55:55to direct the old war veteran back to the motorway, while Doug follows.

0:55:57 > 0:56:00He's actually quite switched on, though, isn't he?

0:56:00 > 0:56:02And other than his hearing, he's...

0:56:02 > 0:56:04I'm saying that, he's stalled it.

0:56:04 > 0:56:07No, no, no, press the clutch down. There we go.

0:56:09 > 0:56:11As we were driving through the town centre,

0:56:11 > 0:56:14there's all sorts of lane filters,

0:56:14 > 0:56:17diversions, that kind of thing in the town centre,

0:56:17 > 0:56:20and you could tell he wasn't used to the car

0:56:20 > 0:56:22because it was juddering a bit.
