0:00:49 > 0:00:52Hello, I'm Andy, and this is Kai.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56Kai is a very strange lizard called a chameleon

0:00:56 > 0:00:58and he's a baby.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Now, chameleons live up in the trees so they're very good

0:01:01 > 0:01:05at climbing, and this one's about to climb onto my hair!

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Where are you going?

0:01:08 > 0:01:12They have five toes that are grouped together, three on one side,

0:01:12 > 0:01:16and two on the other, and on each toe there's a sharp claw.

0:01:16 > 0:01:22They use those claws to grip onto the bark. Isn't that right, Kai?

0:01:24 > 0:01:26Isn't he great?

0:01:26 > 0:01:30There are some really cool climbers living in all sorts of places.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33First, let's go to North America.

0:01:37 > 0:01:45Black bears love trees and they love to rub their backs on them too. Ooh!

0:01:47 > 0:01:51There are plenty of trees to choose from in these forests and

0:01:51 > 0:01:57they're not just good for backrubs, they're great for climbing too!

0:01:57 > 0:02:00This black bear mum has two little cubs

0:02:00 > 0:02:03and they can't wait to start climbing.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08That's because many of the trees in the forest

0:02:08 > 0:02:11have yummy nuts and berries at the top.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16And bear cubs love tasty treats.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20So now it's time for some climbing lessons.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25The first thing to work out is which tree to climb.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29How about a small one?

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Oh! No, that's not right.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40CUB SQUEALS

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Whoops! Neither is that.

0:02:43 > 0:02:47Don't worry, there are plenty more trees to try.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55How about a big one?

0:02:58 > 0:03:00This tree is called a red pine.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05It looks perfect for climbing because it's got lots

0:03:05 > 0:03:07of branches sticking out.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15That bark's a bit flaky though!

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Better try somewhere else!

0:03:24 > 0:03:26What about these cubs?

0:03:26 > 0:03:29They're climbing a tree called a paper birch.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37Its bark is very smooth so that's no good either.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Much too slippery.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48Oh, dear. Climbing isn't as easy as it looks.

0:03:50 > 0:03:56But once they find the right tree, there'll be no stopping these cubs!

0:03:56 > 0:04:01Their strong, curved claws are perfect for gripping

0:04:01 > 0:04:06and black bears are super strong so they make expert climbers.

0:04:09 > 0:04:10CUBS GROWL

0:04:10 > 0:04:13They don't always get it right, though.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16Don't worry, he's OK!

0:04:18 > 0:04:20And if all this climbing tires you out,

0:04:20 > 0:04:23you can always have a nap halfway up.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30# Andy's Baby Animals

0:04:30 > 0:04:32# Andy's Baby Animals! #

0:04:32 > 0:04:35Next stop is Brazil!

0:04:36 > 0:04:41Lots of baby animals like to climb, but not always up trees.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43OTTERS SQUEAK

0:04:46 > 0:04:50This is a family of giant river otters.

0:04:50 > 0:04:57Mum and Dad have three pups and they love a good splash around!

0:05:00 > 0:05:03They even like a bit of climbing too... On Dad!

0:05:07 > 0:05:11They spend most of their time in the river eating fish

0:05:11 > 0:05:15for breakfast, lunch and supper.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22But sometimes even otters have to come out of the water

0:05:22 > 0:05:25and that means a spot of climbing.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33Otters have large, webbed feet which aren't very good

0:05:33 > 0:05:35for climbing up muddy banks!

0:05:35 > 0:05:40It's like trying to climb wearing flippers.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Oh! He's given up!

0:05:44 > 0:05:50Mum makes it look easy, but she's been climbing for years.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Her pups just need practice.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57It's a bit steep here though.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Good idea! Best to start somewhere less slippery, I think.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10But what's Mum doing up there anyway?

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Well, she's marking her territory -

0:06:17 > 0:06:22telling other otters that this is her home and they should stay away.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27She can't put a sign up that says "private",

0:06:27 > 0:06:33so she does it by smell instead, using her wee.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37Eurgh! That would certainly keep me away!

0:06:41 > 0:06:45Careful, little pup! It's a bit pongy up there!

0:06:45 > 0:06:47OTTER CHIRPS

0:06:47 > 0:06:51Maybe you should leave climbing for another day.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00# Andy's Baby Animals

0:07:00 > 0:07:02# Andy's Baby Animals! #

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Now we're off to the Middle East.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Some baby animals are just born to climb.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16These are a type of goat. They're called "ibex".

0:07:21 > 0:07:24This is Mum and she has two little babies

0:07:24 > 0:07:28just one week old called "kids".

0:07:28 > 0:07:30GOATS BAA

0:07:30 > 0:07:35They live right at the top of these cliffs in the deserts of Israel.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40It's a very long way down to the ground, isn't it?

0:07:40 > 0:07:41Phew!

0:07:45 > 0:07:50Pay attention, you two! It looks like Mum is taking you for a walk!

0:07:53 > 0:07:57But keeping up on this mountain stroll could be a little tricky...

0:07:59 > 0:08:02..because their mum is a bit of a daredevil.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06They're not bothered though.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Climbing down a cliff this high would be

0:08:09 > 0:08:12a very scary thing for you or me to do,

0:08:12 > 0:08:14but for a baby ibex...

0:08:17 > 0:08:20..it's like a walk in the park.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Even at only one week old,

0:08:23 > 0:08:27these two can already climb down the steepest of slopes.

0:08:27 > 0:08:32Ibex have short legs and strong bodies which makes them super

0:08:32 > 0:08:35springy and great at balancing.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43Just look at them go!

0:08:46 > 0:08:51When you're as good on your feet as an ibex, climbing is a lot of fun.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05They've made it! Well done, everyone!

0:09:09 > 0:09:13And now they can enjoy a nice drink and something to eat...

0:09:14 > 0:09:17..before they tackle the long climb back up.

0:09:21 > 0:09:27For bear cubs, otter cubs, kid ibex and even young chameleons

0:09:27 > 0:09:31like Kai here, it takes a lot of practice to learn how to climb.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35See you next time! Say goodbye, Kai! AS KAI: Goodbye!
