0:00:48 > 0:00:52Hello, I'm Andy, and this is a baby tortoise.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Now, it's only small at the moment,

0:00:55 > 0:00:59but it will grow up to be about as big as Dad over there.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Tortoises are reptiles.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06Reptiles are cold-blooded, which means they need the sun to warm up.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10And they do that with these shells.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13The sun will come down and heat the shell -

0:01:13 > 0:01:17it's a bit like a radiator, really - then the tortoise will get warm.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22'Baby animals behave differently if they're too hot or too cold.'

0:01:22 > 0:01:25First, we're off to East Africa.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31Elephants are the largest of all land animals,

0:01:31 > 0:01:34but they start out much smaller.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40This mum and calf live in Kenya, and at midday,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43when the sun is high in the sky, it gets super-hot.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Too hot for a little elephant.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Luckily, mum's got those two giant ears that she can flap

0:01:52 > 0:01:55like a fan to help her cool down.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01"Ahh, nice. Keep flapping, mum."

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Standing in the shade is another great way to cool down.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Ho-ho, oops. She's not quite got the hang of standing yet, though.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20Give her a hand, Mum. Or a trunk.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26At least when your mum's as big as a minibus,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28you'll always have some shade.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34It looks like today's going to be a real scorcher.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36So Mum's had a bright idea.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41A trip to the swimming pool.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Well, it's more of a muddy puddle, really, but...

0:02:46 > 0:02:49that's not going to stop them splashing about.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54ANDY CHUCKLES

0:02:54 > 0:02:58This is a brilliant way to cool down, and to have lots of muddy fun.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Don't forget to wash your back now.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10This little calf can't spray water from her trunk yet,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13but Mum's shower is big enough for two.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23Erm, I thought baths were supposed to get you clean.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27Not this one, though. It's a mudbath.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35The mud helps protect them from the sun, as well.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38It's like elephant sun cream.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44Looks like they've gone for factor 50 mud cream.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48The little calf is having so much fun,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51she's forgotten how to stand up again.

0:03:54 > 0:03:55"Thanks, Mum!"

0:03:59 > 0:04:03And remember, always be careful when you get out of the bath.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05It can be rather...

0:04:06 > 0:04:08..slippy.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Oop. Up you get.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16ANDY LAUGHS

0:04:19 > 0:04:23# Andy's Baby Animals Andy's Baby Animals. #

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Now let's head over to Japan.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33Getting too hot isn't a problem here.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36During the winter it's f-f-freezing!

0:04:40 > 0:04:44These youngsters are baby snow monkeys,

0:04:44 > 0:04:48and they know how to have lots of fun, too.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51They all live together in a giant family called a troop.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Their winter wonderland looks beautiful,

0:04:58 > 0:05:02but it's a hard place to survive without central heating.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04ANDY SHIVERS

0:05:05 > 0:05:09That's not going to stop them playing in the snow, though.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Infant snow monkeys love making snowballs.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19Not for throwing - they just like carrying them around.

0:05:22 > 0:05:27It's a good job they've got all that fur to keep them warm.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Just like a big, thick winter coat.

0:05:30 > 0:05:31ANDY SHIVERS

0:05:33 > 0:05:38Ugh, what's he up to? Cheeky monkey.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Oh. Never mind.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44It's probably time to go and warm up anyway.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46And what's the best way to warm up?

0:05:49 > 0:05:52A nice hot bath of course.

0:05:54 > 0:05:59These are natural hot springs, filled with lovely warm water,

0:05:59 > 0:06:02bubbling up from deep underground.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15So maybe the monkeys DO have central heating after all.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Oh, I think he's been in here too long.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25His face has gone from pink to red.

0:06:29 > 0:06:34It's the perfect place for a monkey to get warm.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39And you can even have your fur checked for bugs, as well.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43I expect they'll stay in here all day.

0:06:46 > 0:06:51# Andy's Baby Animals Andy's Baby Animals. #

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Our next stop is South Georgia, Antarctica.

0:06:56 > 0:07:01Some places are really, really, REALLY cold.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07But you'll still find lots of baby animals.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Like these king penguin chicks.

0:07:13 > 0:07:18They don't look anything like the grown-up penguins. Not yet, anyway.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Because they're covered from head to toe

0:07:22 > 0:07:26in soft, brown, fluffy feathers called down.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30Not very stylish, but very, very warm.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37Just as well, too, because Antarctic winters can be colder

0:07:37 > 0:07:39than the inside of a freezer.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Huddling up together is another way to stay out of

0:07:44 > 0:07:47the chilly winds and keep nice and toasty.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51I hope they take it in turns to go on the outside.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59South Georgia isn't always cold, though.

0:08:02 > 0:08:07In the summer, the sun comes out, and things really start to heat up.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Hmm, suddenly that big, fluffy coat doesn't seem

0:08:11 > 0:08:13like such a good idea, does it?

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Don't worry, there's always plenty

0:08:21 > 0:08:25of ice-cold sea water around to help an overheating penguin cool down.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30The chicks aren't very good at swimming yet,

0:08:30 > 0:08:33so they need to be careful not to get out of their depth.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38And if that water's too deep for them,

0:08:38 > 0:08:41there's another paddling pool just over there.

0:08:42 > 0:08:48There it is. Even if it is a little bit...

0:08:48 > 0:08:54Eww, muddy. Squelch, squelch, squelch, squelch.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Oh, dear, it looks like he's dropped something.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Maybe it's down here.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11Erm, you've got a bit of mud on your face there, I just...

0:09:12 > 0:09:16Never mind! At least you're nice and cool now.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18PENGUINS SQUAWK

0:09:20 > 0:09:23For an elephant calf, a baby monkey, a penguin chick

0:09:23 > 0:09:28or a baby tortoise, warming up and cooling down is very important.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32I think Tony's nice and warm now. Off you go, Tony.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34See you next time.
