0:00:47 > 0:00:51Hello, I'm Andy, and these are lemurs.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53This mum and baby here,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56they're called black lemurs.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57Now, when they're born,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00the babies are the same colour,

0:01:00 > 0:01:02and if they're boys, they turn black,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04like this baby down here,

0:01:04 > 0:01:08and if they're girls, they'll go a light brown colour.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11And lemurs are fantastic at jumping and they need to be

0:01:11 > 0:01:16because they jump from tree to tree in the forests where they live.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20The best lemur jumpers can jump 10 metres!

0:01:20 > 0:01:24Which is almost as long as a bus. Incredible!

0:01:24 > 0:01:29There are so many brilliant animal jumpers.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Let's jump to Namibia, in Africa.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38Living in a big group is a good way for animals to stay safe.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Coming through!

0:01:43 > 0:01:46It's also a great place for a youngster,

0:01:46 > 0:01:48like this baby springbok,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51to learn all the things it needs to know.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Like where to get a drink when it's hot.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00And what to eat when it's hungry.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02Yummy grass. Num-num-num-num.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Or perhaps a tasty bush.

0:02:07 > 0:02:12It also needs to learn to stay away from animals like this cheetah

0:02:12 > 0:02:16because they like to eat springboks for their dinner.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19Quick, everyone, run away!

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Ah!

0:02:26 > 0:02:28But there's one lesson

0:02:28 > 0:02:31that no youngster needs any encouragement to learn

0:02:31 > 0:02:35because it's something that every springbok loves to do.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37And that's...

0:02:37 > 0:02:39spring!

0:02:39 > 0:02:44And when one starts to bounce, everyone wants to bounce.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Boing!

0:02:46 > 0:02:47Boing!

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Boing!

0:02:50 > 0:02:52ANDY LAUGHS

0:02:52 > 0:02:56This springy jumping is called pronking,

0:02:56 > 0:02:58which means showing off.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01And when you can pronk like this,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03why not show off?

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Whee-hee!

0:03:07 > 0:03:08THUNDER RUMBLES

0:03:08 > 0:03:13Uh-oh, it looks like rain's stopped play there.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Anyone got an umbrella?

0:03:15 > 0:03:16But don't worry.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19As soon as the sun comes out again,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22it will be time for another pronk.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Young springbok learn to jump like this

0:03:27 > 0:03:30when they're only a few weeks old.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35And it's not just for fun.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Pronking can save their lives

0:03:39 > 0:03:41because it's a springbok's way of saying

0:03:41 > 0:03:44to any animal who wants to eat them,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46"There's no point in chasing me.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50"I'm too fast and too strong for you."

0:03:59 > 0:04:02But it can be fun too.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15# Andy's Baby Animals

0:04:15 > 0:04:17# Andy's Baby Animals. #

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Now let's go over to the deserts of Mongolia.

0:04:23 > 0:04:28Springboks aren't the only animals who like to jump.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32This crazy little creature is called a jerboa.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35He looks a bit made-up, doesn't he?

0:04:35 > 0:04:38He has the nose of a pig... ANDY OINKS

0:04:38 > 0:04:40..the legs of a kangaroo...

0:04:40 > 0:04:44and the ears of a rabbit.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48This youngster has come out of his desert burrow to go hunting

0:04:48 > 0:04:50for the very first time.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56He's searching for insects that come out at night.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58But he doesn't just use his eyes.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03He's using those giant ears too.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13And they're really good at listening.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21But having such sensitive hearing can make you a little...

0:05:21 > 0:05:24OWL SHRIEKS ..jumpy!

0:05:24 > 0:05:25Oh!

0:05:25 > 0:05:28It's not surprising, though. OWL SHRIEKS

0:05:28 > 0:05:32That's the call of a little owl. OWL SHRIEKS

0:05:32 > 0:05:36And they like to eat, you guessed it, jerboas.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39Better look for insects somewhere else.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42His ears are so big compared to his body,

0:05:42 > 0:05:44that if you or I had ears like that,

0:05:44 > 0:05:48they would reach all the way down to our tummy button.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54As he gets older, he'll use his hearing and jumping together

0:05:54 > 0:05:57to catch insects in the air.

0:05:57 > 0:06:02But right now, he's happy catching food on the ground.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11Jerboas can jump almost as fast as you and I can run.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18But you need to be careful when you're bouncing around in the dark.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21You wouldn't want to land on those spikes.

0:06:21 > 0:06:22Ouch!

0:06:24 > 0:06:28All this jumping can tire a little one out.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Time for a rest.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32ANDY YAWNS

0:06:32 > 0:06:34But with such sensitive ears,

0:06:34 > 0:06:37you might be up early. OWL SHRIEKS

0:06:38 > 0:06:40# Andy's Baby Animals

0:06:40 > 0:06:42# Andy's Baby Animals. #

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Next up, Canada.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Lots of animals use jumping to catch food.

0:06:49 > 0:06:56One day soon, these arctic fox cubs will be expert hunters.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59But for now, they're only a few weeks old

0:06:59 > 0:07:02and they rely on Mum and Dad for all their food.

0:07:07 > 0:07:12At the moment, the playful cubs have their dark summer fur.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19But when the snows of winter arrive,

0:07:19 > 0:07:23the Arctic changes from brown to white.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25Ah.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27And so do the foxes.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33White fur on white snow makes the cubs very hard to spot.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38And that's important when they're learning to hunt.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45This young cub is searching for his favourite food -

0:07:45 > 0:07:49a small mouse-like animal called a lemming.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53But how do you find an animal only a little bit bigger than a mouse

0:07:53 > 0:07:54in all this snow?

0:07:57 > 0:08:01Especially when that animal is hiding underneath the snow.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04I mean, talk about frozen food!

0:08:12 > 0:08:17Luckily, his small, furry ears are very good at hearing.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23And his short, stubby nose is very good at smelling.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25ANDY SNIFFS

0:08:25 > 0:08:28So even though he can't see the lemming,

0:08:28 > 0:08:32his ears and nose tell him exactly where it is.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34And this is where the jumping comes in.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36Oh!

0:08:36 > 0:08:37Ah.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45By leaping up in the air,

0:08:45 > 0:08:47he can crash down on the snow

0:08:47 > 0:08:49like a hammer...

0:08:51 > 0:08:52..breaking through

0:08:52 > 0:08:53to the lemming below.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Whey!

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Oh, ow!

0:08:57 > 0:08:59He doesn't always get it right...

0:09:01 > 0:09:05..but when he does, he's rewarded with a tasty snack.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11And with jumping skills like that, our fox cubs will have food

0:09:11 > 0:09:13no matter how snowy it gets.

0:09:16 > 0:09:21For a springbok calf, a jerboa pup or an arctic fox cub,

0:09:21 > 0:09:25learning how to jump is very, very important.

0:09:25 > 0:09:29And when this baby is old enough, he'll be jumping just like Mum.

0:09:29 > 0:09:30Oh.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32See you next time.
