0:00:02 > 0:00:03This is Madagascar.
0:00:03 > 0:00:07It's a vast island in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa.
0:00:07 > 0:00:09And it's home to some of the most unique
0:00:09 > 0:00:11and rare creatures on the planet.
0:00:11 > 0:00:15Incredibly, 80% of the wildlife here exists nowhere else on earth.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18LEMUR HOWLS
0:00:19 > 0:00:21But it's a paradise under threat.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30So I've sent eight ordinary kids from the UK to have
0:00:30 > 0:00:32the Deadly adventure of their lives.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34Agh!
0:00:34 > 0:00:37They'll face the toughest challenges...
0:00:37 > 0:00:40and discover for themselves how to save this lost world...
0:00:42 > 0:00:44..before it's too late.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23With just three days left of their trip,
0:01:23 > 0:01:26the team are facing their final and biggest challenge.
0:01:28 > 0:01:32Their aim is to reforest an entire area that was previously
0:01:32 > 0:01:34cut down to build a railway.
0:01:35 > 0:01:36Come on, guys, we need to hurry up.
0:01:36 > 0:01:41- For some, it's been hard, backbreaking work.- It isn't working.
0:01:41 > 0:01:42Ugh, I hate it.
0:01:44 > 0:01:46For others, just another competition.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49I don't know if you've noticed but everything we've done
0:01:49 > 0:01:52on this trip has been a competition. And I liked it that way.
0:01:52 > 0:01:57But either way they're still short of the 500 trees target.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00As they discovered,
0:02:00 > 0:02:04one of the major issues the wildlife is facing is habitat destruction.
0:02:05 > 0:02:09It's really sad that it's in so much trouble right now.
0:02:11 > 0:02:16So, to make a difference, they've split into teams to try and reforest
0:02:16 > 0:02:20this area and to see which team gets their flag into the middle first.
0:02:24 > 0:02:25With the first day over
0:02:25 > 0:02:28and each completed tree stake wearing colourful tape,
0:02:28 > 0:02:32confidence is high that they'll complete this task in time.
0:02:34 > 0:02:36We won't need the whole three days.
0:02:40 > 0:02:44But at the end of the day, Yusuf, the tree expert, has informed
0:02:44 > 0:02:48Doug, the team leader, that many of the trees are bad and has started
0:02:48 > 0:02:52removing the tape from those that have not been planted correctly.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55I take this blue tape.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57They planted it wrong.
0:02:59 > 0:03:03So, in the morning, the guys are going to find out they've got ...
0:03:03 > 0:03:05more work than they maybe realised.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15It's early in the morning.
0:03:15 > 0:03:20And the teams' competitive and buoyant mood is still bubbling away.
0:03:20 > 0:03:24- Good morning! - I'm full of energy, full of energy!
0:03:24 > 0:03:28But almost immediately, suspicions starts to grow.
0:03:28 > 0:03:32- I swear they've moved our flag back. - They have.
0:03:33 > 0:03:37- What happened to that gaffer tape? - That had gaffer tape yesterday.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39All of these had gaffer tape yesterday
0:03:39 > 0:03:41because I did all of these.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43And the crew have the unenviable task
0:03:43 > 0:03:45of telling the teams the bad news.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48So, as you notice, they've moved your flag back
0:03:48 > 0:03:50and there's a reason for this
0:03:50 > 0:03:54because Yusuf walked round yesterday and he looked at all the trees
0:03:54 > 0:03:56and some of them haven't been planted properly.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00He found some with blue sticky tape on and no trees in them at all.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02And he found some which were not planted correctly.
0:04:02 > 0:04:05I think about 40 haven't been planted properly.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08Which means the trees might not grow to maturity
0:04:08 > 0:04:11and all your hard work has been for nothing.
0:04:11 > 0:04:15They were so focused on beating the others that the treeplanting
0:04:15 > 0:04:18standard fell below what was acceptable.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21Yusuf knows that if these trees aren't planted correctly,
0:04:21 > 0:04:24the way he showed them, the seedlings will die
0:04:24 > 0:04:27and all of their hard work will have been for nothing.
0:04:28 > 0:04:32After all that work in the hot sun, it's a real setback.
0:04:32 > 0:04:38- Motivation hits rock bottom. - Hey, more fun.- I'm sorry, guys.
0:04:38 > 0:04:40But we need to do it right.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42If we're going to do it, we have to do it right.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44The crew decide that even though it'll lose both teams
0:04:44 > 0:04:48valuable time planting on site, the teams need something to
0:04:48 > 0:04:51remind them about the vital importance of this final challenge.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54We're going to take you off to somewhere else to remind you
0:04:54 > 0:04:57why we're planting these trees so you can see
0:04:57 > 0:05:00and get some motivation back for carrying on today.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03- Shall we head off?- OK.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10Hopefully, this excursion will give them
0:05:10 > 0:05:13a much-needed boost to their flagging energy levels.
0:05:21 > 0:05:2520 minutes later, the Orange team are waiting in a forest outpost
0:05:25 > 0:05:28and for the very first time cracks are starting to show.
0:05:28 > 0:05:33I think people were not trying enough to do it properly.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35- Aimed at me.- Some of those trees were yours.
0:05:35 > 0:05:36I'm just saying.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39We do think everyone...
0:05:39 > 0:05:42some of the trees that weren't right were everyone's.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44Everyone will have made mistakes.
0:05:44 > 0:05:48We're just saying that some people haven't tried hard enough.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50The reason we are doing it is to plant trees
0:05:50 > 0:05:53so no point in doing them wrong.
0:05:53 > 0:05:57Yeah, we're obviously not going to win now, so what's the point?
0:05:57 > 0:06:02It's not a competition! What were you ever going to win? Nothing!
0:06:02 > 0:06:06- The competition was just to make us do it faster.- Absolutely nothing.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13With mood is still no better, they're introduced to Josef,
0:06:13 > 0:06:17a local guide, and they follow him into the forest.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21Josef's pretty much a one-off.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24He's developed a unique connection with a special animal
0:06:24 > 0:06:25that lives here.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31But so distracted with their own problems,
0:06:31 > 0:06:34none of them have even thought of asking where they might be going.
0:06:41 > 0:06:44Meanwhile, the others have gone off in the opposite
0:06:44 > 0:06:47direction for a real tourist encounter.
0:06:47 > 0:06:51Trouble is that to experience it, it's not a hike but a river trip.
0:06:51 > 0:06:54And for some this brings back bad memories.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57Ugh!
0:06:57 > 0:06:59- Where?- Under my seat.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03I was ready about an hour ago to get out the little boat thing.
0:07:05 > 0:07:09Only this time Jamie Rose won't even have to lift a finger.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12We can relax, he's going to do it for us.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17A much easier task than Raina, Charlie,
0:07:17 > 0:07:22Yoran and Eilidh who are on another uphill humid jungle trek.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25We've gone deeper into the forest now.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28We've been walking for about ten minutes.
0:07:28 > 0:07:31And...I still don't know where we're going.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36The mood is at an all-time low.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40I don't know where we're going, I don't know what we're doing.
0:07:42 > 0:07:47The question is, is all this hard work going to be worth it?
0:07:47 > 0:07:50But then something stops them in their tracks.
0:07:59 > 0:08:01- Indri.- Indri.
0:08:01 > 0:08:04Our team have just spotted the reason why they're here
0:08:04 > 0:08:08to plant trees in the first place. This is the Indri,
0:08:08 > 0:08:10the largest of all the living lemurs.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14These black and white beauties can grow
0:08:14 > 0:08:17to about as big as a four-year-old child
0:08:17 > 0:08:21and are of the most endangered primates on the planet.
0:08:21 > 0:08:22They're also one of the loudest.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31These eerie calls echo through the forest
0:08:31 > 0:08:33and can be heard over a mile away.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37They live in small family groups
0:08:37 > 0:08:40and Charlie spots something on one of the adults.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48(Oh my God. Oh, God.)
0:08:54 > 0:08:57Indris only give birth once every two years
0:08:57 > 0:08:59so to be here at this exact time
0:08:59 > 0:09:03and see a baby that's only two months old is a wonderful moment.
0:09:07 > 0:09:10Meanwhile, the others are in for a completely different
0:09:10 > 0:09:12kind of close encounter.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17MEN WHISTLE
0:09:21 > 0:09:23WHISTLING CONTINUES
0:09:23 > 0:09:24- Ah!- Whoa!
0:09:24 > 0:09:26A ring-tailed lemur!
0:09:26 > 0:09:27Oh, my gosh...
0:09:27 > 0:09:31One, two, three, four, five, six, seven!
0:09:31 > 0:09:32Seven ring-tailed lemurs.
0:09:32 > 0:09:34Oh, my God. It's on the boat, it's on the boat!
0:09:34 > 0:09:37It's behind you. Oh, wow!
0:09:37 > 0:09:41Oh, my God!
0:09:41 > 0:09:43Oh, my word!
0:09:45 > 0:09:46Oh, my gosh!
0:09:48 > 0:09:50Oh, wow.
0:09:50 > 0:09:54Lemur Island was set up some years ago, using rehabilitated animals
0:09:54 > 0:09:57that are now living a semi-wild existence.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00I've got two on my knee. Oh, my God!
0:10:00 > 0:10:02I swear they love my hair.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05This lot are now ambassadors for all lemur-kind.
0:10:05 > 0:10:08So used to people, and always hungry.
0:10:08 > 0:10:12It doesn't take them long to steal everyone's hearts.
0:10:12 > 0:10:13It's on my head as well.
0:10:13 > 0:10:17But then, some will do anything for a slice of banana.
0:10:20 > 0:10:22Hello!
0:10:25 > 0:10:27It's on top of the lens!
0:10:29 > 0:10:31THEY ALL LAUGH
0:10:37 > 0:10:40Ring-tailed lemurs live in the wild,
0:10:40 > 0:10:42in the southern regions of Madagascar.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44They can live in dry deserts,
0:10:44 > 0:10:46up mountains, and in lush rainforests.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51And this ability to survive in all kinds of tough places
0:10:51 > 0:10:53means that they tend to do well in captivity,
0:10:53 > 0:10:57and they are a common sight even in many zoos in the UK.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05These captive breeding groups mean that
0:11:05 > 0:11:08if anything terrible here to wipe out ring-tailed lemurs
0:11:08 > 0:11:10in the wild, like a massive fire or disease,
0:11:10 > 0:11:15then there are still captive animals that could one day be reintroduced.
0:11:16 > 0:11:19Oh, they're beautiful.
0:11:19 > 0:11:21Hello!
0:11:21 > 0:11:25But right now, this lot are not worried about how important they
0:11:25 > 0:11:28might be, but are more concerned about filling up their stomachs.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38As close encounters go, it's pretty special.
0:11:38 > 0:11:41But Josef is about to play his trump card.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43Not that Raina's holding out much hope.
0:11:43 > 0:11:47Either attract it or feed it... I'm not sure which one!
0:11:50 > 0:11:52Lemurs don't really come near to humans anyway...
0:11:56 > 0:12:00..and trying to wave leaves around is a bit ambitious.
0:12:02 > 0:12:05What Raina doesn't know is that Josef has over the years
0:12:05 > 0:12:08developed an almost supernatural bond with this band of Indri.
0:12:08 > 0:12:11So much so that they now completely trust him,
0:12:11 > 0:12:15and he treats them as if they are a part of his family.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17Basically, I think Josef has managed to get
0:12:17 > 0:12:21one of the lemur down from the tree with a leaf.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24And now we're just all having a look.
0:12:34 > 0:12:36For some reason,
0:12:36 > 0:12:40these peaceful vegetarians just love the leaves Josef has on offer.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02- RAINA LAUGHS - Did you see...?
0:13:05 > 0:13:07Very few people have ever hand-fed an Indri,
0:13:07 > 0:13:10one of the most endangered animals on the planet.
0:13:10 > 0:13:14Because, unlike those tourist- friendly captive ring-tailed lemurs,
0:13:14 > 0:13:17these Indris are 100% wild animals.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26It's a really special moment for us all.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37And the effect they have is magical.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43But there's a sad twist to the Indri story.
0:13:45 > 0:13:49There are no captive populations of Indri anywhere in the world.
0:13:50 > 0:13:54No safety net if something terrible happens to them in the wild.
0:13:54 > 0:13:56These forests are the last home for these animals,
0:13:56 > 0:14:00and if they get chopped down, the Indri will disappear for ever.
0:14:07 > 0:14:10Thankfully, these wonderful creatures are now protected,
0:14:10 > 0:14:12and the population is growing.
0:14:18 > 0:14:22Just see its small hands... They're little scooping hands.
0:14:25 > 0:14:28An Indri family group need an area of forest
0:14:28 > 0:14:31the size of 40 football pitches. It's a lot of forest.
0:14:35 > 0:14:37So without new forest habitat being replanted,
0:14:37 > 0:14:40they could outgrow the forests that are left.
0:14:42 > 0:14:45The area that our teams are planting is actually connected
0:14:45 > 0:14:49to Indri territory, and that's what makes our team's final challenge
0:14:49 > 0:14:51so vitally important.
0:14:51 > 0:14:54Without their efforts, the baby Indri they've spotted
0:14:54 > 0:14:57might never be able to grow up and have a family of its own.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05Now I'll appreciate how...
0:15:05 > 0:15:10- the reason why we're doing the trees.- Yeah.
0:15:11 > 0:15:16- I need to plant trees now.- Yeah. - I feel the urge to.
0:15:16 > 0:15:20We should head back soon, to get planting.
0:15:20 > 0:15:23The whole team have had an encounter they won't forget.
0:15:23 > 0:15:25Any previous bad feeling is put behind them.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28I feel really bad now.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31Sorry. I apologise for anything that I might have said.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34Merci. Merci beaucoup.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37THEY TALK TO JOSEF IN DIALECT
0:15:39 > 0:15:45This morning we went off to a bad start, but then it was just amazing,
0:15:45 > 0:15:46it was just so cool.
0:15:46 > 0:15:50'Oh, man, everyone was so...'
0:15:50 > 0:15:52You know, everyone thought, it's hard work anyway,
0:15:52 > 0:15:56we don't need something extra on top of it...
0:15:56 > 0:16:00We got to go deep into the forest with Josef
0:16:00 > 0:16:02and we got to see Indri.
0:16:02 > 0:16:03Which is so cool.
0:16:03 > 0:16:08We had a treat in store for us. And what a treat it was.
0:16:08 > 0:16:11Oh, they're beautiful...
0:16:11 > 0:16:13We went to see the lemurs, and that was just amazing
0:16:13 > 0:16:15when they were crawling all over us.
0:16:15 > 0:16:18We were the third people Josef has ever let feed them -
0:16:18 > 0:16:23himself, David Attenborough and then us. Wow.
0:16:23 > 0:16:24It's like, proper important
0:16:24 > 0:16:26cos the trees that we're planting,
0:16:26 > 0:16:29hopefully in 20-odd years when they're grown fully,
0:16:29 > 0:16:30that will be a great habitat.
0:16:30 > 0:16:32'Just think, in 20 years' time,
0:16:32 > 0:16:36'those lemurs could be bouncing off the trees, and...'
0:16:36 > 0:16:39it's just a warm sensation just thinking about it now,
0:16:39 > 0:16:41it feels really like a bubbly kind of warm sensation,
0:16:41 > 0:16:43that I just want to explode!
0:16:43 > 0:16:45'It isn't just about us, so we shouldn't be moaning
0:16:45 > 0:16:48'and like, whingeing,'
0:16:48 > 0:16:51we should actually think, well, what's the point of
0:16:51 > 0:16:55planting these trees? It's not for us, it's for the lemurs.
0:16:55 > 0:16:59That was just like, amazing, and it was proper motivational.
0:16:59 > 0:17:02Now we know how important it is, and we're doing it for the Indri.
0:17:23 > 0:17:24It's their final morning.
0:17:24 > 0:17:26With the whole site now needing completion,
0:17:26 > 0:17:29the team are fired up to complete their challenge.
0:17:29 > 0:17:33Now they realise - even Gwen - that this is not a competition.
0:17:33 > 0:17:37Getting it right for the lemurs is what really matters.
0:17:42 > 0:17:46But they still have an awful lot to do. And time is running out.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51They first have to fix all the badly planted trees
0:17:51 > 0:17:53before getting on with any new trees.
0:18:15 > 0:18:16The day is the hottest so far
0:18:16 > 0:18:19and Eilidh is giving it everything.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22Eilidh's working really hard cos I think she's trying to make
0:18:22 > 0:18:25up for yesterday when she was feeling a bit sick.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28I am proud of her, she's getting stuck in and helping us all.
0:18:28 > 0:18:31Eilidh is getting back involved which is good.
0:18:31 > 0:18:34Everyone's working hard, getting along.
0:18:34 > 0:18:37The first day, I let the team down.
0:18:37 > 0:18:42I let the Indri down, let the forest down. So, today, I am going to work.
0:18:42 > 0:18:44I'm going to try and work twice as hard.
0:18:44 > 0:18:47As soon as we saw the lemurs and saw what we're working for,
0:18:47 > 0:18:49it was quite good.
0:18:49 > 0:18:53So I hope we will get along well and do these trees properly.
0:19:01 > 0:19:05- There's loads of them. - Yeah, I know.
0:19:05 > 0:19:08It takes forever. There's loads we keep on finding.
0:19:21 > 0:19:24We've gone from being like, really positive
0:19:24 > 0:19:27at the start of the day and now we're trying to like,
0:19:27 > 0:19:29get it done now and getting a little bit tired.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31It has gone a bit more negative
0:19:31 > 0:19:36cos we have been finding new ones that keep on having to be done.
0:19:38 > 0:19:41Yeah, I definitely feel we could do with a bit help.
0:19:46 > 0:19:49And that is exactly what's on its way.
0:19:51 > 0:19:55- Do you reckon they came from church? - Is it Sunday?
0:19:56 > 0:19:58That's what the bells were, I reckon.
0:20:03 > 0:20:05I can see loads of people just randomly walking past.
0:20:05 > 0:20:09They're all walking in a straight line.
0:20:11 > 0:20:13Who are they?
0:20:15 > 0:20:16Elsie and Yusuf have arranged
0:20:16 > 0:20:20for similar local kids to come and lend an hand.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22Raina, Eilidh, Charlie and Yoran.
0:20:31 > 0:20:33We were saying earlier we could do with help
0:20:33 > 0:20:36and then out come 47 Madagascar kids.
0:20:42 > 0:20:43And their timing is perfect.
0:20:47 > 0:20:51Me and Yoran would've been here forever trying to do all of these.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54We've got about five kids here, practically done it.
0:21:14 > 0:21:15That's good.
0:21:18 > 0:21:20Nice one. High five!
0:21:20 > 0:21:23LAUGHTER Oh, we've made friends!
0:21:34 > 0:21:38The question is, though, even with all this help is it too late?
0:21:38 > 0:21:41Will their combined efforts manage to finish this
0:21:41 > 0:21:44forest for the future generations of Indri to live in?
0:21:54 > 0:21:58With an hour to spare, the two flags finally come to together
0:21:58 > 0:22:01and the Deadly Mission Madagascar Forest is complete.
0:22:01 > 0:22:05CHEERING

0:22:09 > 0:22:10Nice one.
0:22:12 > 0:22:15As a team we've all planted 500 trees and helped each other.
0:22:15 > 0:22:17We came together as one big family.
0:22:17 > 0:22:21Even though it started as a competition, we all ended together.
0:22:21 > 0:22:24LAUGHTER
0:22:24 > 0:22:27In the not too distant future, this patch of damaged and destroyed
0:22:27 > 0:22:31forest could be filled with the sound of a family of Indri.
0:22:53 > 0:22:56There's only one thing left for our happy band of tired yet
0:22:56 > 0:22:59satisfied adventurers - and that's to eat
0:22:59 > 0:23:03and party with all the local kids that came to give them a hand.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08And to reflect on the past few days' exertions.
0:23:08 > 0:23:12It's really amazing and I loved every minute of it.
0:23:12 > 0:23:15It has to be one of our best days, yeah.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25it's just unreal. It's a perfect ending to the whole adventure.
0:23:25 > 0:23:29We thought it's going to be brilliant once it's done but looking
0:23:29 > 0:23:32at it, it's like you know, this is a huge thing we've got to do.
0:23:35 > 0:23:37Really rich.
0:23:37 > 0:23:41MUSIC: "One Thing" by One Direction

0:24:04 > 0:24:06thing that's ever happened to me.
0:24:09 > 0:24:12All of us British kids and the Madagascar kids united as one to
0:24:12 > 0:24:16help the forest, and that's what we're here for,
0:24:16 > 0:24:17so it made me really happy.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25We've finished. We've planted those trees,
0:24:25 > 0:24:28we've left a little bit of Britain in Madagascar.
0:24:31 > 0:24:34We're finishing with a bang.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26In that time they've travelled hundreds of miles across this
0:25:26 > 0:25:31vast country, from north to south, from east to west.
0:25:31 > 0:25:33I never imagined myself being here,
0:25:33 > 0:25:37getting to do the things that I have. I feel so lucky right now.
