0:00:02 > 0:00:03This is Madagascar.
0:00:03 > 0:00:07It's a vast island in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa.
0:00:07 > 0:00:10And it's home to some of the most unique and rare creatures
0:00:10 > 0:00:11on the planet.
0:00:11 > 0:00:14Incredibly, 80% of the wildlife here
0:00:14 > 0:00:16exists nowhere else on earth.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18HOWLING CRY
0:00:19 > 0:00:22But it's a paradise under threat.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30So I've sent eight ordinary kids from the UK
0:00:30 > 0:00:33to have the deadly adventure of their lives.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35They'll face the toughest challenges...
0:00:35 > 0:00:38I think we're all going to starve, to be honest.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42..and discover for themselves how to save this lost world,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44before it's too late.
0:01:22 > 0:01:23Over the last two days,
0:01:23 > 0:01:27the guys have had a superb time in their tropical paradise...
0:01:27 > 0:01:30- Oh, wow!- Oh, that's cool.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34They've seen why tourists love the island of Isle Sainte Marie...
0:01:34 > 0:01:36It's like a paradise beach.
0:01:36 > 0:01:38THEY YELL
0:01:40 > 0:01:42But it's not all perfect.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45There's trouble in paradise.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52For their next challenge, the gang are going to find out why
0:01:52 > 0:01:56the precious coral reefs around the island are under threat.
0:01:58 > 0:02:02And see how this affects the local people who live off the sea.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09The best way for the guys to discover more about the life
0:02:09 > 0:02:12under the ocean is to get down there themselves.
0:02:13 > 0:02:17They head to the Cetamada Station to meet up with marine biologist Maria.
0:02:17 > 0:02:20OK, so coral reefs are very, very important.
0:02:20 > 0:02:25And we need to check what's the health of the corals, OK?
0:02:25 > 0:02:28She's going to send them on an underwater mission to check out
0:02:28 > 0:02:31the state of the coral reefs around Isle Sainte Marie.
0:02:34 > 0:02:36It's going to be amazing. Wow.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40I'm a bit nervous, because I've never properly done snorkelling
0:02:40 > 0:02:43before, so it should be interesting.
0:02:47 > 0:02:48With their gear sorted,
0:02:48 > 0:02:52the guys head out towards the coral to begin their reef check challenge.
0:02:59 > 0:03:04Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean's floor,
0:03:04 > 0:03:09and yet a quarter of all marine species are dependent upon them.
0:03:11 > 0:03:15While they might just look like rocks, corals are actually made
0:03:15 > 0:03:19by tiny animals, which build hard structures around them.
0:03:23 > 0:03:27These shapes provide homes to stacks more wildlife.
0:03:27 > 0:03:30They're some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41But some reefs are not as healthy as others.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44- Ready?- Yeah.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46The gang are going to check out the health of this reef,
0:03:46 > 0:03:49by carrying out a survey of what lives around it.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54Following a transect line along the seabed, the gang dive down
0:03:54 > 0:03:58and use ID cards to investigate the state of the wildlife up close,
0:03:58 > 0:04:02including fish, invertebrates and, of course, the coral.
0:04:09 > 0:04:12It's data from reef checks like this that are fed back
0:04:12 > 0:04:15to conservation scientists worldwide,
0:04:15 > 0:04:18alerting them to any changes in the reef.
0:04:20 > 0:04:24The coral here, however, is not quite what the guys expected...
0:04:30 > 0:04:32And Gwen has spotted something worrying.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36Where's Eilidh? Eilidh, come over here.
0:04:39 > 0:04:43As the strongest swimmer, Eilidh goes down to check it out.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56The reef here seems dead in places,
0:04:56 > 0:04:59there's bits of broken coral all around.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07It was all sort of dull and there weren't as many fish,
0:05:07 > 0:05:11they were all sort of hiding in the little sparse bits of coral
0:05:11 > 0:05:15that there were, and that's, like, that's really, really sad.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19This is just the tip of iceberg.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22The world's reefs are being damaged at an alarming rate
0:05:22 > 0:05:26and some reefs in Madagascar have lost almost 99%
0:05:26 > 0:05:28of their coral cover.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33The mood of the gang has taken a downward shift.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36See that? You can see, like, all these little holes
0:05:36 > 0:05:39where the little animals live and things.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41And this destruction of the corals
0:05:41 > 0:05:44has certainly given them lots to think about overnight.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56The guys have seen that these reefs are vital habitats for fish
0:05:56 > 0:05:59but that some of the corals are badly damaged.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02The challenge now is to find out what impact this has
0:06:02 > 0:06:04on the local people who live off the sea.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07Are there enough fish here to support them?
0:06:08 > 0:06:11And how hard is it for them to catch their dinner each day?
0:06:14 > 0:06:16We've just met up with a local fisherman
0:06:16 > 0:06:19and he's got some rill in his bucket and we're going to hopefully
0:06:19 > 0:06:23try to catch some fish, so it should be really fun.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27They split into two groups, each going out to catch fish
0:06:27 > 0:06:31the local way, the boys with a hook and line and the girls with nets.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38But that's not all. What the boys catch today will be dinner
0:06:38 > 0:06:42for the whole gang this evening. If they don't catch, they don't eat.
0:06:45 > 0:06:46Oh, come on!
0:06:46 > 0:06:49And getting a bite is trickier than it seems.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53Each of them have their own motivations
0:06:53 > 0:06:55to complete the challenge.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58Although I am a vegetarian I want to see what we're catching.
0:06:58 > 0:07:00Like, what is out there.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03And seeing what these guys are going to have for their dinner.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06And I'm debating whether I'll eat it or not.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08What happens if we don't catch anything, then?
0:07:08 > 0:07:12We go hungry, so we've got to catch. It's our duty.
0:07:13 > 0:07:17Eight people is a common family size in Madagascar,
0:07:17 > 0:07:20so what they need to catch to feed the gang
0:07:20 > 0:07:23is exactly what a family might live off out here each day.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29Meanwhile, the girls are getting ready to catch fish for the locals,
0:07:29 > 0:07:33using big nets, beginning with some unusual preparations.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36We're just having these hats put on us.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38I feel so stupid!
0:07:40 > 0:07:42We're going to go fishing,
0:07:42 > 0:07:45and they're tying a hat to my head in case it rains.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48We are attractive!
0:07:48 > 0:07:49We're gnomes!
0:07:54 > 0:07:56I'm going to end up falling backwards.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03The girls head out into the shallows with the women.
0:08:03 > 0:08:07Their technique involves laying out the net then splashing the water
0:08:07 > 0:08:09to scare the fish towards it.
0:08:14 > 0:08:15They work as a team across the area
0:08:15 > 0:08:18to make sure that they catch as many as possible.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20Oh!
0:08:25 > 0:08:28Raina gets the first one for the girls.
0:08:28 > 0:08:32It's got nice colours. I don't want to eat it.
0:08:32 > 0:08:33How many have you got, Gwen?
0:08:33 > 0:08:35- Oh, it's looking at me. - I've got one.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38And it's not long before Gwen gets a second.
0:08:38 > 0:08:39Whoa, we got a fish!
0:08:39 > 0:08:42We got a fish! I could feel it wriggling.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47But, there's something pretty noticeable about the fish
0:08:47 > 0:08:48they've been catching.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51Most of the fish that we've caught are really small, aren't they?
0:08:51 > 0:08:53Yeah, apart from one.
0:08:53 > 0:08:55I think they're quite small.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58The girls have only been catching small fish
0:08:58 > 0:09:00from the sheltered shallows.
0:09:00 > 0:09:04These fish are not for the gang, but for the local women.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08What they eat tonight is just down to the boys.
0:09:10 > 0:09:12Oh, my flip-flop! Flip-flop down!
0:09:12 > 0:09:15But they're not having much luck on the jetty, so they're heading out
0:09:15 > 0:09:19in a canoe to see what fish they can find on the edge of the reef.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32Come on, little fishies!
0:09:34 > 0:09:36This could be a long day.
0:09:45 > 0:09:48Is this good fishing here, for you?
0:09:48 > 0:09:50- No.- No? Oh.
0:09:52 > 0:09:54I think we're all going to starve, to be honest.
0:09:54 > 0:09:56Hope not.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01- Oh, I think I've got a fish. - Come on, Charlie!
0:10:01 > 0:10:03ALL: Aw!
0:10:03 > 0:10:04Oh, spinney!
0:10:08 > 0:10:10Nature doesn't, like, you can't bribe nature.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14You can't tell nature what to do, so I think that for like,
0:10:14 > 0:10:17people to live this kind of lifestyle is really, really hard.
0:10:18 > 0:10:23I think we all appreciate the fact that if we don't catch fish,
0:10:23 > 0:10:26we don't eat, basically. And that must... it's quite hard
0:10:26 > 0:10:30to sort of like get your head around, not eating.
0:10:30 > 0:10:34But that's something the locals have to think about.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38One of the reasons the boys are struggling
0:10:38 > 0:10:41is because the women's technique closer to shore
0:10:41 > 0:10:43removes the young fish from the shallows.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48This means that the small fish won't get any bigger.
0:10:51 > 0:10:52Oh, what a catch!
0:10:52 > 0:10:54Yes!
0:10:54 > 0:10:56- Urgh, what is that? - Coral.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58- Whoooh!- Oh, he got a rock!
0:10:58 > 0:11:00I caught a rock, do do do!
0:11:00 > 0:11:02It's a bit of coral.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05And coral like this is the root of the problem.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09As they walk further out to sea, Raina and Gwen are worried
0:11:09 > 0:11:11about damaging the reefs here.
0:11:12 > 0:11:16I thought it was just like sand and rock underneath us,
0:11:16 > 0:11:20but there's loads of broken bits, like bits of broken coral, the stone.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24I feel like by stepping on all these corals,
0:11:24 > 0:11:26we're sort of ruining, like, loads of other things as well.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31Jamie Rose gets stuck in with the fishing,
0:11:31 > 0:11:33but the other girls are less keen.
0:11:35 > 0:11:36They've abandoned me!
0:11:39 > 0:11:41I feel like I'm stepping on loads of things.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43Yeah, me too, every step I take I hear "eurgk"!
0:11:43 > 0:11:45I don't like it.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48But Jamie's loving it, she's out there, like, look where she is!
0:11:53 > 0:11:57Despite feeling a little daft out here,
0:11:57 > 0:12:01back home Jamie Rose puts a lot of energy into looking good...
0:12:05 > 0:12:07I'm a real girly girl.
0:12:09 > 0:12:10I'm a bit of a princess, yeah.
0:12:12 > 0:12:14..so people easily underestimate her.
0:12:16 > 0:12:17Check! One, two.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22I have some skills and they include Army cadets,
0:12:22 > 0:12:25climbing trees, and running.
0:12:25 > 0:12:27And also I do kick-boxing.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34Jamie Rose is clearly not a girl to be messed with!
0:12:36 > 0:12:39I've got good stamina.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41I'd just like to be independent some time.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47Out here in Madagascar, Jamie Rose is showing beyond doubt
0:12:47 > 0:12:50that she's a true grafter.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54Her commitment to helping the women is obvious.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56Ah, salt water in cut, salt water in cut!
0:12:56 > 0:12:58SHE SPEAKS IN LOCAL LANGUAGE
0:13:05 > 0:13:07But the other girls are still in a dilemma
0:13:07 > 0:13:10about fishing on the coral reef.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12I didn't quite realise what I was doing.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14Yeah, and the first time it was, like, all exciting,
0:13:14 > 0:13:16you know, we've caught fish.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18And the second time it got less and less.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20And now it's just you've realised that like...
0:13:23 > 0:13:27Don't know what to do really, because we can either save the fish
0:13:27 > 0:13:29or the people go hungry.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31Yeah.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33It's just like a really awkward situation.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37While the girls are divided about whether to carry on
0:13:37 > 0:13:39fishing on the coral...
0:13:39 > 0:13:40Boom town!
0:13:40 > 0:13:43..the boys are finally catching some supper.
0:13:43 > 0:13:44Whoa, that's a cool fish!
0:13:44 > 0:13:47Do not put it next to the water, it will jump out.
0:13:47 > 0:13:50I don't know what to do with it. Shall I...? Whoa!
0:13:50 > 0:13:52- Second fish! - He's got a big 'un! Whoa!
0:13:52 > 0:13:54- Goodness, that is huge. - That is cool.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57Yes, Yoran! Nice one, dude.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00- Third fish!- Yes, Yoran.
0:14:00 > 0:14:04I think I probably will, you know, maybe eat them.
0:14:04 > 0:14:06Because I've, like, seen them get caught and stuff.
0:14:06 > 0:14:07So I know they've been...
0:14:07 > 0:14:11You know they're out here and then you've caught them. Nice.
0:14:15 > 0:14:19Yes! A very small fish, but it's a fish all the same.
0:14:19 > 0:14:22Everything's caught something apart from me,
0:14:22 > 0:14:23and I'm meant to be the fisherman.
0:14:23 > 0:14:26I've got something. I've got something.
0:14:26 > 0:14:28Whoa, this is a strong thing!
0:14:31 > 0:14:33Whoa! Isn't that a stone fish?
0:14:33 > 0:14:34Ah!
0:14:38 > 0:14:39Don't touch it, don't touch it!
0:14:39 > 0:14:41Easy, easy, dangerous!
0:14:41 > 0:14:44This is a stone fish, and it's deadly.
0:14:45 > 0:14:50If you stand on it, the venom is intensely painful and can even kill.
0:14:51 > 0:14:55Stone fish are one of the most venomous fish in the world.
0:14:55 > 0:14:57They have a line of 13 long spikes down their back,
0:14:57 > 0:15:01which can inject a toxic liquid when pressed.
0:15:02 > 0:15:06That will kill me! This will kill me.
0:15:08 > 0:15:12Oh, I didn't want that! I don't want this!
0:15:15 > 0:15:19They may be venomous, but they're still good to eat.
0:15:19 > 0:15:20Don't touch that!
0:15:20 > 0:15:21And stone fish number two!
0:15:21 > 0:15:24Pass it down very carefully to Oak.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30Oak seems to be having the most luck today, though.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32- I got it.- Nice.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36Doing pretty good, catching all the fish.
0:15:36 > 0:15:40Clearly, Oak thinks some chill-out time's called for.
0:15:40 > 0:15:44Catching a few sun rays, get a little suntan.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46Get as much as possible.
0:15:46 > 0:15:48Whale! Oh my, God!
0:15:48 > 0:15:51Oh, my word! Whoa!
0:15:51 > 0:15:54That's a mother and calf whale. Wow.
0:15:54 > 0:15:55Oh, my...
0:15:57 > 0:15:59That did not just happen!
0:15:59 > 0:16:01Dude!
0:16:01 > 0:16:03- It's underneath us. - Did you see that, Yoran?!
0:16:03 > 0:16:05It went underneath us.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07I thought I was dreaming when I saw that come up.
0:16:07 > 0:16:09I looked at it and it...
0:16:09 > 0:16:11It didn't compute.
0:16:11 > 0:16:13Yeah, it didn't. It's a whale, man! Oh!
0:16:16 > 0:16:19They've just encountered a humpback whale and its calf,
0:16:19 > 0:16:22one of the most majestic whales on the planet,
0:16:22 > 0:16:25so close they could have thrown a flip-flop at it.
0:16:26 > 0:16:30That experience was utterly mind-blowing. It was just weird.
0:16:30 > 0:16:36It was just, like, sat there and boom, a whale.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39Two whales, mother and a calf.
0:16:39 > 0:16:41I reckon that's what took my bait last time.
0:16:45 > 0:16:49Closer to land, Raina and Gwen decide to move off the coral
0:16:49 > 0:16:51and swim back to shore...
0:16:54 > 0:16:58..leaving Jamie Rose out on the reef working with the women.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00I've been doing this all morning.
0:17:00 > 0:17:04The others haven't, because they abandoned me, and it's lunch now,
0:17:04 > 0:17:11so I hope they have some nice lunch now because I helped catch some fish.
0:17:16 > 0:17:19They don't know what they're doing.
0:17:19 > 0:17:22I don't think that anyone has ever explained to the women,
0:17:22 > 0:17:25like, what they should and shouldn't be doing.
0:17:31 > 0:17:35Having been in Madagascar for a month now, this is a problem,
0:17:35 > 0:17:37which has struck them again and again,
0:17:37 > 0:17:40how the people and animals can both survive here together.
0:17:43 > 0:17:45You lazy people!
0:17:45 > 0:17:47- We're not lazy.- Yeah, you are.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49How are we lazy?
0:17:49 > 0:17:50How are we lazy?
0:17:50 > 0:17:52You didn't do it.
0:17:52 > 0:17:57Yeah, but we have reasons, it wasn't just because we were tired.
0:17:57 > 0:18:01We just looked down at the reefs and what we were like stepping on
0:18:01 > 0:18:03and then we just felt awful.
0:18:03 > 0:18:06When we were stepping on them, it was like,
0:18:06 > 0:18:09say like lemurs live in trees, it was like step...
0:18:09 > 0:18:13- like chopping those trees down. - Destroying a habitat, I know.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16I know it's bad, but they need to eat.
0:18:16 > 0:18:20I don't know if they even know the reef is alive.
0:18:20 > 0:18:23They're probably brought up like there's nothing wrong with it.
0:18:25 > 0:18:29I'm not saying that like, that I agree with stepping on the coral,
0:18:29 > 0:18:32it's just that I wanted to help them because, you know,
0:18:32 > 0:18:34they have no food.
0:18:34 > 0:18:36You're thinking about the realistic side of it,
0:18:36 > 0:18:38like the people also need...
0:18:38 > 0:18:40And I've learnt so much, staying in that water.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43I've learnt so much about the women and how they live
0:18:43 > 0:18:45and how they have to depend on those fish.
0:18:50 > 0:18:52It seems, it's a difficult situation.
0:18:52 > 0:18:55Everything today has been quite difficult and it's contradicting.
0:18:55 > 0:19:00I don't... My mind is saying something different to my heart.
0:19:02 > 0:19:05Before Raina and Gwen head back to meet the boys,
0:19:05 > 0:19:08Maria has some hard-hitting words about the reality of life here.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10We have a choice, they don't.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12They don't have a choice today for eating.
0:19:12 > 0:19:15They don't have a fridge, they don't have a supermarket
0:19:15 > 0:19:18to buy the fish, so their only choice is to walk down here
0:19:18 > 0:19:22in the lagoon and take the fish that they can find.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25You think that you don't affect the coral reefs
0:19:25 > 0:19:29with the things that you do in back home?
0:19:29 > 0:19:33You know, the coral reefs, they can die or the corals can die
0:19:33 > 0:19:35just by the sunscreen that you use.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38- Really?- Do you know that?
0:19:38 > 0:19:42How many times a week do you take your car, in back home?
0:19:42 > 0:19:43Do you...?
0:19:43 > 0:19:45Quite a few.
0:19:45 > 0:19:46- Every day?- Yeah.
0:19:46 > 0:19:50Every day you take the car and every day you produce,
0:19:50 > 0:19:53you are participating in the global warming.
0:19:53 > 0:19:57And warming is also one of the causes of losing the reefs.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02So I want you to think about that as well.
0:20:02 > 0:20:03Yeah.
0:20:05 > 0:20:08I feel quite embarrassed because we actually,
0:20:08 > 0:20:12even though we didn't agree with doing fishing out there,
0:20:12 > 0:20:18we still actually contribute to the global warming at home, even here
0:20:18 > 0:20:20where there's like nowhere near where we live.
0:20:22 > 0:20:26You can help it, but you can't actually fix it on your own.
0:20:26 > 0:20:28Yep. Everyone's got to contribute to helping it.
0:20:33 > 0:20:34As Maria explains,
0:20:34 > 0:20:37these women aren't the only ones damaging the reefs here.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42Coral reefs are under threat from many angles.
0:20:42 > 0:20:44A major problem is coral bleaching.
0:20:44 > 0:20:47If sea temperatures increase, or the seawater gets polluted,
0:20:47 > 0:20:51the living coral dies, leaving the plain white skeletons below.
0:20:54 > 0:20:57This can happen through global warming.
0:21:00 > 0:21:03And this doesn't just affect the coral itself
0:21:03 > 0:21:06but also the fish that live off them too,
0:21:06 > 0:21:08which means that there's also fewer fish around,
0:21:08 > 0:21:10as the boys are finding out.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15So we've got ten in total, which is OK-ish.
0:21:15 > 0:21:19- I don't think it's really enough, with eight of us.- No.
0:21:21 > 0:21:24They head back to tell the girls the bad news
0:21:24 > 0:21:27of how little there is to eat tonight.
0:21:27 > 0:21:28We only caught ten.
0:21:30 > 0:21:34That's all we've got for dinner. You either eat that, or you don't eat.
0:21:34 > 0:21:35You had to kill them.
0:21:41 > 0:21:44After a day at sea, hunger's building.
0:21:45 > 0:21:48So the gang head down to the beach to see exactly how far
0:21:48 > 0:21:51the boys' catch will go.
0:21:51 > 0:21:52Oh, wow!
0:21:52 > 0:21:55They've got eight mouths to feed on their ten fish.
0:21:55 > 0:21:56- Oh, dear.- Oh, God.
0:21:56 > 0:21:58Start with the parrot fish.
0:21:58 > 0:22:00I don't even know where to do on that.
0:22:00 > 0:22:01Oh, wow.
0:22:01 > 0:22:04- So we'll just... - SINGING
0:22:04 > 0:22:06Are they coming to steal our fish?!
0:22:06 > 0:22:07Defend the fish!
0:22:09 > 0:22:12WOMEN SING AND BEAT DRUMS
0:22:12 > 0:22:14They're coming in, like, in line formation.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17They're going to take us all down!
0:22:18 > 0:22:21Oh, look, they're my mates!
0:22:21 > 0:22:23Having spent the day with these women,
0:22:23 > 0:22:27Jamie's keen to get involved with their traditional dancing.
0:22:48 > 0:22:52Dancing over, the girls return to help cook their dinner.
0:22:52 > 0:22:54Like pull them out, properly pull them out.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56Like it's just maybe they enjoy it.
0:22:56 > 0:22:57As a keen fisher herself,
0:22:57 > 0:23:00Gwen shows the others how to gut their tiddlers.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02You're doing really well, Yoran.
0:23:02 > 0:23:04Bearing in mind you're a vegetarian.
0:23:04 > 0:23:06Gwen...
0:23:06 > 0:23:08There's one there.
0:23:08 > 0:23:09I can't believe it.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11This is how Okechukwu guts a fish!
0:23:11 > 0:23:12Yes!
0:23:12 > 0:23:15Because the fish are so small, preparing them has taken
0:23:15 > 0:23:20almost an hour and it's given Jamie Rose time to think.
0:23:20 > 0:23:24Gwen! Gwen! Gwen, we should try and feed those women.
0:23:24 > 0:23:28They need the food better than us, I think that we should feed them.
0:23:28 > 0:23:30- Who?- Good idea.- Those women.
0:23:30 > 0:23:32Guys! I think that we should feed those women.
0:23:32 > 0:23:35- I think we should feed them. - They are more hungry than us.
0:23:35 > 0:23:37I think we should feed them.
0:23:37 > 0:23:40We haven't really got enough even for ourselves.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45We don't need it, but if we started with ten fish,
0:23:45 > 0:23:48it's a bit of a joke going over there and saying,
0:23:48 > 0:23:50"Oh, yeah, we're going to give you ten fish."
0:23:50 > 0:23:53- What you're reading into it... - There's more than ten of them.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55But it's ten fish that they didn't have before.
0:23:55 > 0:23:57- Exactly. - Just think about it that way.
0:23:57 > 0:24:01If we had caught like, I don't know, 20 fish, and we were going to
0:24:01 > 0:24:04like, give them all, then that would be fair enough.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07They just won't listen, they won't give the fish
0:24:07 > 0:24:11because they say it's taking the mick and they just don't want to,
0:24:11 > 0:24:15because they said that they caught it, so they want to eat it.
0:24:15 > 0:24:16D'you want to...?
0:24:16 > 0:24:19As we know, Jamie Rose is not one to give up.
0:24:19 > 0:24:22Guys, do you think... Guys, just think about it, though.
0:24:22 > 0:24:23They have six children each.
0:24:23 > 0:24:26There's four of them, six children each.
0:24:27 > 0:24:29We don't need to eat?
0:24:29 > 0:24:30You ate earlier.
0:24:32 > 0:24:36Jamie came up with quite a good idea, to share the fish out
0:24:36 > 0:24:38with the women that they went trawling with.
0:24:38 > 0:24:42And I think it is a good idea, but I don't know if it would be...
0:24:42 > 0:24:43taking the mick in a way.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45Right, actually, let's have a vote.
0:24:45 > 0:24:48- Gwen, do you think we should give it to them?- Yeah.
0:24:48 > 0:24:49Do you think we should, Charlie?
0:24:49 > 0:24:51Do you think we should give it to them?
0:24:51 > 0:24:54- Do you think we should, Yoran? - If you guys want to, let's do it.
0:24:54 > 0:24:57If we give it to them, they're going to take it clean off the bones,
0:24:57 > 0:25:00they're going to suck those bones, chew them. They will. they will.
0:25:00 > 0:25:01Yeah.
0:25:01 > 0:25:04So I think that we have decided to give it to them,
0:25:04 > 0:25:06whether or not you like it, Yoran.
0:25:06 > 0:25:08Can you pull my sleeves up, if you don't have fish guts?
0:25:08 > 0:25:10There's no hard feelings between the gang,
0:25:10 > 0:25:15but they are going to go hungry, so the crew have a surprise for them.
0:25:15 > 0:25:16Excuse me.
0:25:16 > 0:25:17- Hooray!- Rice!
0:25:17 > 0:25:20Yeah, now we have enough food to feed them all.
0:25:20 > 0:25:22So look, the other side.
0:25:22 > 0:25:24Fish is and rice is staple diet out here.
0:25:24 > 0:25:26The guys dish out the dinner to the women
0:25:26 > 0:25:28in plates made from banana leaves.
0:25:29 > 0:25:33It's a good job we've got the rice, though, because that fish,
0:25:33 > 0:25:37that'd have been embarrassing having to give that to them.
0:25:37 > 0:25:40But now we've got a little routine going, serving up the rice,
0:25:40 > 0:25:42and putting some fish on and then giving it to them.
0:25:42 > 0:25:45So hopefully they'll enjoy it.
0:25:45 > 0:25:49These four boys were the ones that caught your fish.
0:25:49 > 0:25:52We're sorry we didn't catch more fish.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55SHE TRANSLATES
0:25:56 > 0:25:58It's not a problem!
0:26:00 > 0:26:04As a thanks for their fish, the locals kick off the drumming again.
0:26:07 > 0:26:11As usual, Okechukwu is the first to get stuck in with the dancing.
0:26:13 > 0:26:15You always have to do it! Every time!
0:26:23 > 0:26:26Vegetarian Yoran gets the chance to sample the fish
0:26:26 > 0:26:29that he's caught, with some gentle persuasion from Gwen.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32- Eat the meat!- Go on, Yoran!
0:26:32 > 0:26:33Do it!
0:26:33 > 0:26:35It's very bony.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38Boom, he's done it. Ooosh!
0:26:38 > 0:26:42It's been a long and emotional day for them all.
0:26:42 > 0:26:45But they've made great connections with these women.
0:26:47 > 0:26:50Their challenge here has shown them exactly how hard it is
0:26:50 > 0:26:53for local people to make a living from the sea.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59They've seen that these women are trapped in a cycle
0:26:59 > 0:27:01of needing to feed their families,
0:27:01 > 0:27:04but in doing so, they strip the young fish from the oceans
0:27:04 > 0:27:07and damage the coral reefs, so that means there's fewer fish
0:27:07 > 0:27:08available to them.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13But there's a bigger picture.
0:27:13 > 0:27:16And we at home are not innocent either.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20We're part of the problems facing the corals.
0:27:23 > 0:27:26So what about the future of the reefs here?
0:27:28 > 0:27:31Next time, the gang will investigate solutions which can both
0:27:31 > 0:27:35protect the coral reefs and help the local people.
