0:04:15 > 0:04:17but sees his dad at least twice a week.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19Since his parents split up,
0:04:19 > 0:04:22Sam has become the man of the house.
0:04:22 > 0:04:26Being like the right-hand man in the house
0:04:26 > 0:04:31is just - I've never done it before - so I'm like a beginner.
0:04:31 > 0:04:33But I'm doing quite well.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36Me and my mum are like a team
0:04:36 > 0:04:40and whatever my mum goes through, I'll stick up for her all the way.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49'Sam may be small, but he's very tough.
0:04:49 > 0:04:51'He's tough emotionally
0:04:51 > 0:04:53'and he's tough physically.'
0:04:53 > 0:04:59- What he's got to watch out is not to go too fast too soon.- Yeah.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05- May the best man win.- Absolutely.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07You'll have fun doing it, I think.
0:05:07 > 0:05:09I'm a bit nervous of various things,
0:05:09 > 0:05:13that you don't hurt yourself and don't fall off anything
0:05:13 > 0:05:15or you don't get burnt feet!
0:05:15 > 0:05:19But I'm sure it'll all go really well.
0:05:19 > 0:05:23My mum, say, if I got in trouble,
0:05:23 > 0:05:25she'd be like, "Oh, Sam, no! Sam!"
0:05:25 > 0:05:30And if I hurt myself, she'd be all wimpy
0:05:30 > 0:05:34but I'm fine with that, cos mums are mums, aren't they?
0:05:34 > 0:05:37'Sam and I are really close.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40'We look after each other, amuse each other occasionally.'

0:05:45 > 0:05:47- with his beat boxing.- Beat boxing.
0:05:47 > 0:05:53- That's me.- But, um, yeah, he's been a real support
0:05:53 > 0:05:57when times have been tough
0:05:57 > 0:06:03and you don't expect that of your own son, especially one so young.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06- But you've been brilliant. - Thanks, Mum.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08You're welcome.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11MAN CALLS TO HORSES
0:06:13 > 0:06:16The Tough Guy Challenge was invented by Billy Wilson,
0:06:16 > 0:06:18otherwise known as Mr Mouse.
0:06:18 > 0:06:23He used to be a sergeant major in the army with the Grenadier Guards.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27Mr Mouse thinks people are too soft on kids these days.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Throughout history, boys have gone through tests of pain and endurance.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34These are called rites of passage, or initiations.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37He thinks boys become men by taking risks.
0:06:37 > 0:06:41We had to go into the army
0:06:41 > 0:06:44which taught you how to be a man.
0:06:44 > 0:06:47In my day, we did assault courses,
0:06:47 > 0:06:49we did army discipline.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53This has been used for centuries. Centuries.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57And I haven't invented it. I've recreated it.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01The race starts with a one-kilometre warm-up run
0:07:01 > 0:07:03down the entire length of the course.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05They pass through Great Bear woods
0:07:05 > 0:07:08and then on to the first major obstacle
0:07:08 > 0:07:10known as "The Tiger's Teeth".
0:07:13 > 0:07:17It consists of two giant A-frames covered in wooden beams
0:07:17 > 0:07:19and cargo netting.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22The boys must climb 15 metres to the top
0:07:22 > 0:07:24and then scramble down the other side.
0:07:24 > 0:07:28They're gonna be thrilled. They'll be full of adrenaline.
0:07:28 > 0:07:31They're gonna fly up it.
0:07:31 > 0:07:33That's the start of their adventure.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36They know there's more beyond it.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39This is where it all gets high, high in the mind.
0:07:43 > 0:07:46Coming off the tail of The Tiger is the Somme Surprise.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48This is followed by the Stalag Escape,
0:07:48 > 0:07:53a 20-metre crawl under a tangled web of barbed wire
0:07:53 > 0:07:55just inches above their heads.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59Its name comes from a terrifying prisoner-of-war camp called Stalag 17,
0:07:59 > 0:08:02run by the Germans in World War II.
0:08:02 > 0:08:06It gives you a feeling of what it was like
0:08:06 > 0:08:09in those days with trenches and barbed wire
0:08:09 > 0:08:11and getting out of these prisons.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15They've got to get down on their belly and crawl, snake crawl,
0:08:15 > 0:08:19elbow after elbow. Blood on your bum and blood on your belly.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23The boys then enter an area known as The Killing Fields.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26This is the heart of the Tough Guy course.
0:08:26 > 0:08:30The main obstacle here is a 15-metre-high rope walkway called
0:08:30 > 0:08:33The Behemoth.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39Up there, without hook-up wires, without a helmet,
0:08:39 > 0:08:42without anything except their capability,
0:08:42 > 0:08:45their risk-taking, to hold on and grip those ropes
0:08:45 > 0:08:49because if they let them go, where will they fall to?
0:08:49 > 0:08:52The boys will run through fire and water.
0:08:52 > 0:08:56They'll crawl through the pitch-black tunnels of the Vietcong
0:08:56 > 0:09:00then make one final exhausting push uphill to the very last obstacle
0:09:00 > 0:09:02at the highest point on the course,
0:09:02 > 0:09:05known as Paradise Climb.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09The finale is the one where we'll be gritting our teeth
0:09:09 > 0:09:14and biting our nails to see them passing over the top of the big one.
0:09:14 > 0:09:20This will find out how much strength of character is in the boys
0:09:20 > 0:09:24because when you're up there you're either gonna walk it
0:09:24 > 0:09:27or you're gonna crawl it, or you're gonna cry it.
0:09:30 > 0:09:3512-year-old Daniel has a personal battle to fight in the race.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38Four years ago, he was diagnosed with Perthes' Disease,
0:09:38 > 0:09:44a rare illness that affects your bones, making them grow differently.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47He had two operations on his left leg when he was ten.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53He was in a wheelchair for six months
0:09:53 > 0:09:56and then on crutches until just a year ago.
0:09:56 > 0:10:00Now he's facing the toughest physical challenge of his life.
0:10:03 > 0:10:07I'm a bit nervous. I don't think he can do it cos of his leg.
0:10:07 > 0:10:11Some days he can walk OK and some days he's in absolute agony.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14He's suffered this week with cramp
0:10:14 > 0:10:17so I think he's trying to overdo it before.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19I'm a bit apprehensive.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22'I have been confident, funnily.'
0:10:22 > 0:10:26I have tried to stay strong and have been quite chirpy.
0:10:26 > 0:10:28But sometimes I do think, "Why me?"
0:10:29 > 0:10:33Everyone that sponsored him knows what he's been through.
0:10:33 > 0:10:37Even if he just does two obstacles, they're prepared to pay up.
0:10:37 > 0:10:40They know he'll do his best. They know he's a fighter.
0:10:40 > 0:10:43That's Daniel. Always has been, always will be.
0:10:43 > 0:10:47Where he got it from, I don't know. It's not in my genes!
0:10:47 > 0:10:49I'm gonna try and do the best I can.
0:10:49 > 0:10:52Not overdo it, nor under.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55I'm gonna try my best and give it all I've got.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04With the big day approaching,
0:11:04 > 0:11:08the boys are getting special coaching from a tough guy expert.
0:11:08 > 0:11:13Welcome this morning. We are very lucky to have James Appleton here,
0:11:13 > 0:11:16who was the winner of the Tough Guy race you're going to do
0:11:16 > 0:11:20as Tough Kids. So a big round of applause for James Appleton.
0:11:24 > 0:11:28The first thing to know about Tough Guys is it's not a race.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31It's an obstacle course designed to test you
0:11:31 > 0:11:33and your limits and push you to them.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36So it's about survival.
0:11:36 > 0:11:39But not in a way that you think, "That was easy."
0:11:39 > 0:11:41If you do, you've not tried hard enough.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44It's about crossing the finish line with nothing left.
0:11:47 > 0:11:51James gives the boys a taster of the challenges they'll face.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54This film is all about his epic victory
0:11:54 > 0:11:58in the 2009 Tough Guy Challenge.
0:12:02 > 0:12:06The reality of the race is suddenly looming large.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08It's dangerous and demanding.
0:12:08 > 0:12:12When he reached the end of the race, James collapsed on the finish line.
0:12:12 > 0:12:16He had to be taken away for treatment by paramedics.
0:12:17 > 0:12:22There'll come a point where your body says, "I've had enough.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25"I'm tired, cold, wet, muddy.
0:12:25 > 0:12:27"I've been bashed about a bit."
0:12:27 > 0:12:31But you then have to decide if you're gonna walk for a bit
0:12:31 > 0:12:34and not try any harder, or if you're gonna crack on
0:12:34 > 0:12:37and toughen up. You have to work that out for yourselves.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40That's what it's about, it's about that moment
0:12:40 > 0:12:43when you find out whether you've got grit inside you
0:12:43 > 0:12:45or whether you're made of lesser stuff.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48Don't let it beat you. You have to beat the course.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51OK? Good luck with that.
0:12:58 > 0:13:01James's pep talk has got the boys worried.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04Pre-match nerves are starting to kick in.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07Now that I've seen the actual video,
0:13:07 > 0:13:09it's got me thinking and I'm scared.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13It's got me thinking if I'm really fit to do it
0:13:13 > 0:13:14or if I'm really not fit.
0:13:14 > 0:13:18Cos I haven't been training much and it's got me a bit nervous.
0:13:18 > 0:13:22Getting me scared is like barbed wire and stuff like that.
0:13:22 > 0:13:27And being stuck under those tunnels, that gets me quite scared.
0:13:27 > 0:13:31I'll probably be gasping for breath cos I've got asthma
0:13:31 > 0:13:34so that might be an issue like holding my breath and stuff.
0:13:34 > 0:13:40I don't really like tight spaces cos I'm quite claustrophobic.
0:13:40 > 0:13:45And crawling through small places is still kind of nerve-wracking.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48I took some tips from the guy that won it last time.
0:13:48 > 0:13:52He said you've got to be fit and try and when your body says no,
0:13:52 > 0:13:56you say yes. I'll try and push on as hard as I can.
0:13:58 > 0:14:0112-year-old Jordan comes from Zimbabwe in South Africa.
0:14:01 > 0:14:04Two years ago, Jordan's dad died.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07He and his 16-year-old brother, Nicholas,
0:14:07 > 0:14:12left Africa and came to live with their mum here in Coventry.
0:14:12 > 0:14:17Jordan's a very strong-willed boy. He takes a lot of that from his dad.
0:14:17 > 0:14:19Some of it from me, I guess!
0:14:19 > 0:14:24He's very motivated. If he's gonna do something, he'll do his best.
0:14:24 > 0:14:26I couldn't find what I wanted.
0:14:26 > 0:14:29They desperately miss their dad.
0:14:29 > 0:14:33His dad passed away, it's almost two years now.
0:14:33 > 0:14:37But, in saying that, I think he's doing really well.
0:14:37 > 0:14:42He continually tells me he's gonna be like his dad.
0:14:42 > 0:14:44So I'm not worried in that department.
0:14:44 > 0:14:46He'll make a very good man.
0:14:46 > 0:14:51My dad died in 2006. He was sick for quite some time.
0:14:51 > 0:14:54He was sick for about two years.
0:14:54 > 0:14:58And then I knew something bad was gonna happen
0:14:58 > 0:15:02when he went into hospital for the sixth or seventh time.
0:15:02 > 0:15:06And then the day I was meant to go and see him,
0:15:06 > 0:15:10I got the bad news that he had passed away.
0:15:10 > 0:15:16So I wasn't really shocked or really emotional
0:15:16 > 0:15:18cos I'd expected that to happen.
0:15:18 > 0:15:24He was buried on Christmas Day, which is the worst thing ever!
0:15:25 > 0:15:28Jordan and his family are on their way to chapel.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31They go at least twice a week, sometimes more.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34# I know who I am #
0:15:34 > 0:15:36Jordan says his belief in himself
0:15:36 > 0:15:39comes from his belief in God.
0:15:39 > 0:15:42# I know who I am
0:15:42 > 0:15:44# I am yours... #
0:15:44 > 0:15:48My faith helps my strength cos sometimes when I feel really down
0:15:48 > 0:15:50when I'm doing cross country
0:15:50 > 0:15:54I like singing the church song or start praying or something
0:15:54 > 0:15:57and then I get that energy boost to carry on going.
0:15:57 > 0:16:03# Jesus, you are mine. #
0:16:09 > 0:16:13It's the day of the race and there's a buzz of excitement in the air.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16Really nervous, but really up for it.
0:16:28 > 0:16:30Mum's coming to see me today.
0:16:30 > 0:16:34We were getting ready this morning and she was all nervous and that.
0:16:34 > 0:16:40But she'll cheer me on and encourage me to get through the race.
0:16:40 > 0:16:42I think it'll be really good.
0:16:42 > 0:16:45Success would be a great honour to have,
0:16:45 > 0:16:50and failure would be a big disappointment
0:16:50 > 0:16:53and I'll have to come and do the course again
0:16:53 > 0:16:56to overcome my fears, if I have any.
