0:00:19 > 0:00:22My head feels really itchy.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24You don't need it,

0:00:24 > 0:00:27so, it doesn't really matter whether you've got it or not.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Just completely fell out when I was about nine.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32You can change your hairstyle all the time.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35People might think you're different, but you're not.

0:00:40 > 0:00:4413-year-old Kim and eight-year-old Dan have never met.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47But, they have something unusual in common.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54This summer, they'll meet for the first time,

0:00:54 > 0:00:58along with lots of other kids just like them,

0:00:58 > 0:01:00at a very special weekend camp.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13When I meet people,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15I don't know whether to tell them about my hair.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19I don't know whether it'll make things more awkward.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Some of my friends at school still don't even know.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24It's shocking.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27I come into school nearly every day with a different hairstyle

0:01:27 > 0:01:28and they still don't realise.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32Kim has alopecia.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36Alopecia is when your hair falls out.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38It might just be a small patch that goes,

0:01:38 > 0:01:41or every last little hair on your body.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45It doesn't happen a lot to children, but it's hard when it does.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49And rather than being seen without their hair,

0:01:49 > 0:01:50many prefer to wear wigs.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58That was the first day that it started falling out

0:01:58 > 0:02:01and it's already come out in a big patch.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03But quite a lot of it has come out at the front now.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06This is how quick it goes, like, one second.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08Some people actually lose it all overnight,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10but mine just comes out in stages.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14It's usually when I wake up in the morning

0:02:14 > 0:02:17and half of it's on my pillow.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20That's when my eyebrows started to go,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22so, I've got no eyebrows left at that point.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25At least when your hair falls out you can cover it up,

0:02:25 > 0:02:28but with my eyebrows falling out, I try and draw them on

0:02:28 > 0:02:30and they just look so stupid.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Doctors aren't sure why hair falls out like this,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37and Kim's type of alopecia means that her hair keeps growing back,

0:02:37 > 0:02:39and then falling out again.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42That's where it has spread all the way back there

0:02:42 > 0:02:45and there's just no hairline at all.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48You're constantly up and down thinking it's going to grow back

0:02:48 > 0:02:49and then it's not.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53She's not comfortable with anybody outside the family

0:02:53 > 0:02:55seeing her without wigs on.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58She never goes out without a wig on.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Even if friends come round,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03she doesn't take the wigs off in front of her friends.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08It would be very hard. I probably wouldn't do it.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Even if someone paid me about ten grand, I still wouldn't do it.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15It's hard coping with your hair falling out

0:03:15 > 0:03:17when you feel you're the only one

0:03:17 > 0:03:20and no one understands what you're going through.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22But this summer, at alopecia camp,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Kim will meet other girls just like her.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28I think going to camp will really help,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31because I don't know how to look on the positive side of stuff.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34If they've had it for a lot more years than me, then they'll know

0:03:34 > 0:03:39how to deal with it and I'll take a lot of advice from them.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44When she was younger, Kim used to be much more out-going.

0:03:44 > 0:03:49She even had a successful acting career.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53Cute face as well, ah, look.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Ahh, very good.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59She was so confident when she did that for a 10-year-old.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02It was unbelievable how, you know, outgoing and bubbly she was.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05These last three or four months in particular,

0:04:05 > 0:04:08she's not wanted to go out on her own.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11I think if she's like that, it's obviously going to affect her.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16Yeah, I think I've changed quite a bit since I did Hollyoaks,

0:04:16 > 0:04:19cos my confidence level has dropped.

0:04:19 > 0:04:24Those low confidence levels aren't helped by having to wear wigs

0:04:24 > 0:04:27that mean she can't have hair styles like her mates.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30When you see all the girls walking round with high buns

0:04:30 > 0:04:33and high ponies and stuff, which is the fashion and stuff,

0:04:33 > 0:04:37you're there with your hair down 'cos you can't do any of that,

0:04:37 > 0:04:44it kind of makes you stand out a bit in a way.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48You're not a different person without a wig than you are with.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50It's just, you look different.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53I like wearing wigs just to have hair,

0:04:53 > 0:04:56but then I'd rather show everyone that I am bald,

0:04:56 > 0:04:58that's just who I am.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Once, where I had my first wig, the synthetic one,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03in year three, it like, blew off.

0:05:05 > 0:05:10My name is Daniel Parkes and welcome to my house.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Eight-year-old Daniel is a professional stuntman

0:05:13 > 0:05:15and world heavyweight boxing champion.

0:05:15 > 0:05:20Start like this, and like...oops. Let me do that again.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24And, yes, he has no hair.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26Guess who this is?

0:05:26 > 0:05:30It's Dan when he was younger, when he still had his hair.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33But then something sad happened that had a big impact on him.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Granddad died because he had the belly ache.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39When I first saw...

0:05:39 > 0:05:42When my mum told me, I was crying, bursting into tears.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48And what happened to Dan's hair after that was pretty unexpected.

0:05:48 > 0:05:49It fell off.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52I didn't like it.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- Ready?- Set, go!

0:06:00 > 0:06:02It doesn't happen to many people,

0:06:02 > 0:06:04but the stress of losing his grandad

0:06:04 > 0:06:07might have been why Dan lost all his hair.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09And Dan's kind of alopecia,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12means that his hair fell out and never came back.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16To and from school he always wears his hat.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Obviously, because he's got no hair, he feels the cold

0:06:19 > 0:06:22and obviously he's got no hair, the sun gets him.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30Dan likes school, but he doesn't like the name calling.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33The bullies say, "baldilocks and the three hairs."

0:06:33 > 0:06:35They say, "baldy" and "baldilocks."

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Even though Dan's usually a happy chappy,

0:06:38 > 0:06:40nasty names make him feel...

0:06:40 > 0:06:42Sad and upset.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51In the last few weeks, Kim's missed a whole heap of school.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54I wake up sometimes and I just feel like, erm...

0:06:54 > 0:06:56like I don't want to face it.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00There was comments when I started in year seven,

0:07:00 > 0:07:02there was quite a lot of teasing.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Because there was people saying like I don't fit in

0:07:05 > 0:07:08and I don't belong at school cos I'm different.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10I'd like to be able to just think,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13it's going to be fine, give it a go and if something does go wrong,

0:07:13 > 0:07:17you've got to the support of everyone just to carry on

0:07:17 > 0:07:20and just get better about it.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26The journey in on the bus was becoming a bit traumatic.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30You'd had a couple of incidents where children made remarks.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37She feels more comfortable going in with me in the mornings now.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Not going on the bus means Kim arrives alone.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51So, last lesson, we started off with our lunar theme park.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53Have a really quick look through.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55And whilst her friends are in lessons together,

0:07:55 > 0:07:58she's often working on her own, too.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02I think it's because if something's happened in a lesson,

0:08:02 > 0:08:04and I want to be on my own to do my work.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08If something goes wrong in the lesson I don't want to be there,

0:08:08 > 0:08:10and it's putting me off my work and stuff.

0:08:15 > 0:08:21In some ways, girls want something positive, to be, like, looked at.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25But, they don't really want something really negative,

0:08:25 > 0:08:27to get all the attention and stuff.

0:08:31 > 0:08:32And I feel like that as well.

0:08:32 > 0:08:37I feel like I'm getting looked at because it's something wrong with me.

0:08:37 > 0:08:42That it's something that's not a good thing, it's a bad thing.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Some days, she's feeling so low,

0:08:46 > 0:08:50she convinces her mum she can't go into school at all.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52I just say that I don't want to go in

0:08:52 > 0:08:55and then we'd have a conversation about why.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56She doesn't force me to do anything,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59she just lets me do what I'm comfortable with doing.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09Dan and Callum have been best mates since, well, forever.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14In my heart, he's like a brother,

0:09:14 > 0:09:16because I play with him all the time.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25He's my best mate and he will...

0:09:25 > 0:09:28if somebody blames me in the class,

0:09:28 > 0:09:32he always sticks up for me and I stick up for him too.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35Today, though, they've had some bad news.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37I'm going to be in Miss Thomas' class

0:09:37 > 0:09:39and he's going to be in...

0:09:39 > 0:09:43I'm in year four and he is, but he's in a different class than me.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45It's going to be hard for Dan without the support

0:09:45 > 0:09:50of his best friend in class, and his mum's hoping camp will help.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52I hope the camp can keep the confidence up,

0:09:52 > 0:09:55so when he does go back to school,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57he can fight back at any bullies.

0:09:57 > 0:09:58Not physically, but give them

0:09:58 > 0:10:00as good as they get verbally.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02So he can turn round and say, "so what?"

0:10:05 > 0:10:09School is over, the summer holidays have started

0:10:09 > 0:10:10and it's the day before camp.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Are you getting in there?

0:10:14 > 0:10:15Looks like we're taking him, Kim.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18SHE LAUGHS >

0:10:18 > 0:10:19He's going!

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Howdy!

0:10:25 > 0:10:27There's a cowboy theme

0:10:27 > 0:10:30and Dan is desperate to be the best dressed doggone, rootin'-tootin'

0:10:30 > 0:10:32rockin'-horse wrangler there.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Yee-haa!

0:10:34 > 0:10:37"I can't wait to see my beautiful and wonderful friends today

0:10:37 > 0:10:40"at the Be Bold Children's Alopecia Camp.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44"Watch this space for photos and updates! Yee-haa!"

0:11:00 > 0:11:06Over at the campsite in Scarborough, all is quiet on the western front.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08But not for long.

0:11:24 > 0:11:25I'm really excited.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30The weekend will be more jam-packed than a pack of jam jars

0:11:30 > 0:11:32jammed in your jim-jams.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Also, it's a great chance for people with alopecia

0:11:34 > 0:11:37and their families to get together.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46It's really nice, like, making new friends that have, like...

0:11:46 > 0:11:48That are in the same situation as you are.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51No-one stares. It's like everyone's used to it.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54It's like, a dead relaxing place to be

0:11:54 > 0:11:57and you can meet other people with alopecia.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59You can always turn to someone who has it

0:11:59 > 0:12:01and then they'll understand what it's like.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05Some of them met at camp last year, but its Kim's first time

0:12:05 > 0:12:07and, for now, she's keeping her distance.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Dan's not wasting any time.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18OK, I'll serve, you served the first.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22Will lost his hair two years ago

0:12:22 > 0:12:26and Dan is the only other bald boy he's ever seen.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30He's exactly like me, no hair at all, completely bald.

0:12:30 > 0:12:35And Dan, he's cheerful, he's just, you can't stop him laughing.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38One thing that we haven't talked about is having alopecia.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41That's one thing that we don't really, we haven't talked about.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57Everyone knows that the one thing all real cowboys love

0:12:57 > 0:12:59is a toasted marshmallow.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Have my stick and have the rest of the marshmallows.

0:13:02 > 0:13:07Even Kim's come down to earth to join them around the campfire.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Your tipi's right next to my tipi.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13Mummy, are we having a fire before breakfast tomorrow?

0:13:21 > 0:13:24It's the start of another fun-filled day at summer camp.

0:13:24 > 0:13:30Cowboy Dan's up early to round up some more friends to play with.

0:13:30 > 0:13:31Last year when we come to camp

0:13:31 > 0:13:34and he found out he wasn't the only one,

0:13:34 > 0:13:38that's when everything completely flipped over and changed for him.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40Last thing I want is for him to go in his shell,

0:13:40 > 0:13:43and these camps just keep, you know, bringing them out.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Is that your breakfast, a stick of rock?

0:13:46 > 0:13:48I just had mine, sausages.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52I think with more children here now,

0:13:52 > 0:13:55it's building a support system for the kids, they're not on their own.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59If Kim's going to tap into that support system

0:13:59 > 0:14:01and get the most out of being here,

0:14:01 > 0:14:05she's going to need to come down from that tree and get stuck in.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09Michelle's had alopecia for most of her life.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12She knows what it's like to desperately want to fit in.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16If you haven't got hair, you just feel like you're...

0:14:16 > 0:14:17a non-person sometimes.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21And that's a real tough one for anyone to have to deal with

0:14:21 > 0:14:24that's got anything different about them.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26Worst thing is losing your eyelashes.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29That, to me, was always the final straw.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31It feels like you're being rubbed out.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Feels like they're rubbing bits of your body out,

0:14:34 > 0:14:36and you can't do anything about it.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39You basically live within this bubble of alopecia.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41It's breaking that bubble

0:14:41 > 0:14:44and realising that you can't put your life on hold because of that.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48And it took me a long time to say, you know what, I am who I am

0:14:48 > 0:14:52and if you don't like it, that's not my problem, it's yours.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54Kim, Gemma, Gemma, Kim.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Michelle knows Kim's been feeling down,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01and wants her to get the most out of her time here.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05- I met Gemma, first time last year, wasn't it?- Yeah.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08- And that was quite nice, wasn't it?- Yeah.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10And had you met anyone else with alopecia before?

0:15:10 > 0:15:11No.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14Gemma's 12 and last year's camp gave her a big boost.

0:15:14 > 0:15:19Michelle's hoping that Kim will learn from her and the other girls

0:15:19 > 0:15:21how to handle the emotional ups and downs.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24THEY LAUGH

0:15:24 > 0:15:27- So, have you not been wearing wigs at all then?- I do.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31- You do, but you just didn't feel like it this weekend?- Yep.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33Well, you've got a great-shaped head.

0:15:33 > 0:15:38Gemma lost her hair for the first time when she was five.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41I do feel just as normal as everybody else seems to be.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43I am quite confident

0:15:43 > 0:15:49and I do do normal things that girls would want to do.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51I don't think I have to wear a wig all the time

0:15:51 > 0:15:55because I don't really mind who sees me.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59I think it's really important to feel really confident

0:15:59 > 0:16:01and to feel like you're looking good,

0:16:01 > 0:16:05or looking beautiful, cos it just boosts your confidence.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09Even though Gemma is happy to be seen without a wig

0:16:09 > 0:16:12she also sees an upside to wearing them, too.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15I feel like I've got another personality,

0:16:15 > 0:16:17cos every wig is different.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19In the morning it is faster,

0:16:19 > 0:16:24it's easier to style, put it back in a pony tail or put it up.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28When I was younger, I used to be really sad about not having any hair

0:16:28 > 0:16:31and when people asked me questions, I used to take it really personally.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33I don't mind my hair falling out,

0:16:33 > 0:16:36it's when my eyebrows come out, that really upsets me.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39It's bad having, not having eyebrows and eyelashes

0:16:39 > 0:16:42because they kind of make your face, if you get me.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44Everyone will stare at you,

0:16:44 > 0:16:47but if you're brave, then you can just ignore all of that.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51The last day of camp and a mobile beauty parlour has arrived.

0:16:51 > 0:16:55And these girls reckon they have something in common with

0:16:55 > 0:16:59a few of their favourite singers.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02Beyonce wears wigs as well, and so does J-Lo.

0:17:05 > 0:17:06Even Kim can't resist -

0:17:06 > 0:17:10she's keen to find out how to draw in her eyebrows when she loses them.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13I've tried drawing my eyebrows on as well,

0:17:13 > 0:17:16but I've just miserably failed!

0:17:16 > 0:17:18I can't, I can't do it,

0:17:18 > 0:17:21so I'm hoping that I'll get in some tips

0:17:21 > 0:17:23on how to successfully draw your eyebrows on

0:17:23 > 0:17:25and what colour to use and stuff

0:17:25 > 0:17:28and what colour would match your skin tone and things.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35- Kim, what you having done? - What?- What you having done?

0:17:35 > 0:17:37My eyebrows.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46See, I've got one eyebrow, I've got one, but the other one I can't do.

0:17:46 > 0:17:51If adults' eyebrows drop out, they can have them tattooed back on.

0:17:51 > 0:17:55But this isn't a good idea for children.

0:17:55 > 0:17:56So the beauticians here use powders

0:17:56 > 0:18:00made especially for people who've lost their eyebrows.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02The colours match different skin tones

0:18:02 > 0:18:05and the powders are waterproof - they won't just rub off.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06You can start it slightly more,

0:18:06 > 0:18:09we can always start it a little bit further in, take it out.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12If you look at just the brow, you're going to pick faults.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16But if you look at you as a whole, it's just defined your face.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19- What do you think of that colour? - Yeah, it's nice.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34So, you got any plans for tomorrow?

0:18:34 > 0:18:37I'm staying for the next whole day.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40Dan's now happy with or without a hat,

0:18:40 > 0:18:42but William isn't - he's always in a baseball cap.

0:18:42 > 0:18:46He's finding it harder than Dan to accept life without hair.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48His new friend's ready with some top tips

0:18:48 > 0:18:50for handling nasty comments at school.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Hey, William, I'll tell you a little secret.

0:18:53 > 0:18:58Once, when people call me baldy, guess what I call them back?

0:18:58 > 0:18:59What?

0:18:59 > 0:19:01Hairy.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04I just call them Hairy Mary quite condary.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09William's got some advice of his own on how to cope in a new class.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Well, I was in exactly the same situation

0:19:12 > 0:19:17and what you have to do is, you have to, I am not kidding,

0:19:17 > 0:19:20it seems so nervous, but everyone is in the same situation,

0:19:20 > 0:19:25everyone's nervous and then you, you, you quickly make new friends.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29I'd have to keep in touch with Dan, definitely keep in touch.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32- cos you are the happiest person on earth.- Thanks, mate.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38It's the last night of camp and everyone's dressed up

0:19:38 > 0:19:42and ready for one almighty hoedown.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44Yee-haa!

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Seeing people like Beth and Michelle,

0:19:52 > 0:19:56it didn't like, hit me straight away, I think it took a lot of time

0:19:56 > 0:19:59to think about it and how they, like, get on with it and stuff.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02I just didn't want to like, go out without my wig on and stuff,

0:20:02 > 0:20:06but then I saw them, how they handle it, and they just don't care,

0:20:06 > 0:20:10so I think it kind of sank in that, "Yeah, I could do that as well".

0:20:18 > 0:20:20- Morning, William. - Morning.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23- You look nice today.- Thanks.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27This is, this is my email.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30It's been another brilliant summer camp,

0:20:30 > 0:20:32with loads of new friendships being made.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35But has it been a big success for Kim and Dan?

0:20:35 > 0:20:39- Bye, Kim.- You going? Oh... See you later.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44How will they handle life back at home on their own?

0:20:48 > 0:20:50You have to be proud of yourself,

0:20:50 > 0:20:53otherwise you're not going to get anywhere.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56I went into school without my wig and that was the first time

0:20:56 > 0:20:58I ever showed anybody it.

0:20:58 > 0:21:02If people bully you, you just have to stand up and ignore them.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04Don't take anything too personally,

0:21:04 > 0:21:07just if, people are just curious when they ask questions.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13When we first met Kim, she was in a bad place

0:21:13 > 0:21:16and often couldn't cope with school.

0:21:16 > 0:21:20I wake up sometimes and I just feel like, erm,

0:21:20 > 0:21:22like I don't want to face it.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28It's now a few weeks into the new term that she was dreading,

0:21:28 > 0:21:30and Kim's surprising herself.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32You can take it home for a bit of homework.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34I'll lose it.

0:21:34 > 0:21:35I'll give you half an hour Friday.

0:21:35 > 0:21:39- Put it in your bag, then you won't lose it!- I will.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41She's going into school every day

0:21:41 > 0:21:46and attending every one of her lessons, WITH her friends.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51I just, I'm feeling like I'm pushing myself a lot more now,

0:21:51 > 0:21:54um, cos I think last time I was just being a bit wimpy

0:21:54 > 0:21:57and just kind of like, taking the easy option and stuff.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00And this time I'm, like, really trying to make an effort

0:22:00 > 0:22:03to not let things like, um...

0:22:03 > 0:22:05upset me and stuff.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12No, I spelt join wrong, I spelt join with a "g"!

0:22:12 > 0:22:16I feel proud of myself, like when I have had a tough day

0:22:16 > 0:22:19and it's started off, like, really bad,

0:22:19 > 0:22:23but then I kind of like pick myself up and I get proud of myself again.

0:22:23 > 0:22:27I just feel like I'm an ordinary school child now,

0:22:27 > 0:22:28I don't, I just don't care.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33At home, there's big changes too.

0:22:33 > 0:22:35Her best mate is allowed to film Kim

0:22:35 > 0:22:39doing something she'd wouldn't haven't wanted seen before.

0:22:39 > 0:22:40- Are you recording?- Mm-hm.- Hello.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43So, have you got used to applying eyebrows now as well?

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Yeah, I did it yesterday, I was like, "I can do it!"

0:22:46 > 0:22:49See, that one's thinner than that one now.

0:22:49 > 0:22:53So, I can use that as a template and just make it thicker.

0:22:56 > 0:23:00Before summer, Kim's confidence was so low,

0:23:00 > 0:23:02not even a humongous wodge of cash would persuade her

0:23:02 > 0:23:04to be seen without her wig.

0:23:04 > 0:23:09It would be very hard. Um, I probably wouldn't do it.

0:23:09 > 0:23:13Even if someone paid me about ten grand, I still wouldn't do it.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15Want to zoom in?

0:23:15 > 0:23:17I started to lose that bit there

0:23:17 > 0:23:19and as you can see it's spread everywhere now.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21But I dyed my hair pink,

0:23:21 > 0:23:24cos it will not affect whether it falls out or not anyway.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27Cos at t' end of day it's going to.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29Yeah, it started to fall out while it wasn't dyed,

0:23:29 > 0:23:34so the dying doesn't really make a bit of difference, to be honest.

0:23:34 > 0:23:35If I hadn't have gone to camp,

0:23:35 > 0:23:41I wouldn't be comfortable standing here on film without my wig on.

0:23:41 > 0:23:45Just shows what a difference it makes.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47So has the camp really affected your confidence, then?

0:23:47 > 0:23:50I think the camp has helped quite a lot.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52Right, what we're going to do now,

0:23:52 > 0:23:55is we're going to sort through my wigs that I do want

0:23:55 > 0:23:57and wigs that I don't.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00This one was originally down to here.

0:24:00 > 0:24:04This is the one that I spent most of my time in at camp.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08This is one I got yesterday off the market stall for, again, £15.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11Bop! Ooh, pulled half of it out trying to get it off.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13So that's that one.

0:24:23 > 0:24:27I gave you three ticks, write a little message, add an A.

0:24:27 > 0:24:31In Birmingham, Dan's doing well, too,

0:24:31 > 0:24:34in his new class, with his new friends.

0:24:34 > 0:24:38Did you write that? I'm going to take that home with me.

0:24:38 > 0:24:43In fact, he's doing so well, he's got a surprise for them all.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46In my classmates, what's happening this afternoon,

0:24:46 > 0:24:48I'm going to do a little speech.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51I'm not even going to tell you about the speech,

0:24:51 > 0:24:52I'm going to do it there,

0:24:52 > 0:24:56I don't want to spoil it for you.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59Before camp, there's no way he would have stood up in front of a class

0:24:59 > 0:25:01and done a talk about anything,

0:25:01 > 0:25:05but now, you know, he's proud to have no hair.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07As you know, my name is Daniel Parkes

0:25:07 > 0:25:10and I have a condition called alopecia.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13And people keeps on saying, "What's alopecia?".

0:25:13 > 0:25:15All your hair comes out.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18I had mine out two years ago because I was stressed

0:25:18 > 0:25:21because my grandad died.

0:25:21 > 0:25:26Even women and men can have alopecia

0:25:26 > 0:25:28and boys and girls.

0:25:28 > 0:25:34Sometimes, people say that I have cancer, and I don't.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37APPLAUSE

0:25:37 > 0:25:40Thank you, any question?

0:25:41 > 0:25:42Leyton?

0:25:42 > 0:25:45How long did it take for your hair to come out?

0:25:45 > 0:25:50Um, a long time, but we went to the barber's to cut the rest off.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52Mark?

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Um, will you hair ever grow back?

0:25:55 > 0:25:57I don't know. Lashay?

0:25:57 > 0:25:59Did you have a lot of friends at camp?

0:25:59 > 0:26:04Yeah, I loved it, and we had lovely, lovely time.

0:26:04 > 0:26:08Thank you, friends, for listening.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12APPLAUSE

0:26:17 > 0:26:22Can somebody get my mum a tissue? She's crying!

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Finally, Kim is moving on.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48She used to be too scared to go out with her friends.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51Cos of the position I was in, I was really paranoid

0:26:51 > 0:26:53and I wasn't thinking straight.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55And every person that like, looked at me,

0:26:55 > 0:26:58I thought they were looking at me in a bad way.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01But now I know if they're looking at me, it's not anything bad,

0:27:01 > 0:27:02I think I've realised that now.

0:27:02 > 0:27:07I think now I'm going to know that I can push her a bit harder

0:27:07 > 0:27:09than I have done in the past.

0:27:09 > 0:27:13I know now that maybe she can handle it better than I thought she could.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16And handling it better means that Kim's not afraid to stand out.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20Can I get the, um, the bottom drawer, the purple stockings.

0:27:20 > 0:27:21Purple?

0:27:21 > 0:27:25She's got choices, wear a wig, or don't.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27Or even wear one with bright blue streaks.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31I can go out with my friends and do stuff and kind of, like,

0:27:31 > 0:27:33draw attention to myself.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Like, we can go and roller-skate and stuff.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Cos before, I wouldn't roller-skate

0:27:37 > 0:27:41because people would be like, taking the mick out of us

0:27:41 > 0:27:43and I thought would it be about my hair?

0:27:43 > 0:27:47But now I just, we just go out and just do like really stupid stuff,

0:27:47 > 0:27:51just I'm like, I've got loads of my confidence back now.
