0:00:37 > 0:00:39That's Reece.
0:00:39 > 0:00:41That's Hattie.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43And me. I'm Julie.
0:00:43 > 0:00:45We dream of making it to the Paralympics in Rio,
0:00:45 > 0:00:48but we have a long way to go...
0:00:48 > 0:00:49Go!
0:00:49 > 0:00:52Reece needs to get noticed by the Paralympic selectors.
0:00:52 > 0:00:56I know how hard I need to train.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58I know my targets.
0:00:58 > 0:01:01Hattie must hold her nerve in her first international appearance.
0:01:01 > 0:01:03I've already put in four years of hard work.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05And I need to show what I can do.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08And me? Well, it's complicated.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10It's going to take us a lot more hard work.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12But we are determined.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14This is our Race for Rio...
0:01:18 > 0:01:20I'm already a Paralympian.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23I made it to London 2012 as part of the Sitting Volleyball team.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25Yes, I was there. I was in awe,
0:01:25 > 0:01:28representing my country in front of the roaring home crowd.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32I'm a through-knee amputee,
0:01:32 > 0:01:34which means I don't have a knee.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37It was congenital, so it was at birth, and at five I had
0:01:37 > 0:01:43an operation to shorten my limb, so I could have a metal bending knee.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46And it's made out of titanium, and it's hydraulic,
0:01:46 > 0:01:48so the faster I use it the faster it goes.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54Some of my friends don't understand why I train so hard
0:01:54 > 0:01:56and sacrifice so much for my Paralympic dream.
0:01:57 > 0:01:59At a training day, I would wake up, go to school,
0:01:59 > 0:02:01and then I'd come home
0:02:01 > 0:02:04at around 4:30. Then by quarter past five,
0:02:04 > 0:02:05I go to the train station
0:02:05 > 0:02:09and catch the train for about an hour travelling time,
0:02:09 > 0:02:13and then I go training from 7:30 till 9:30.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15And then get the train back home,
0:02:15 > 0:02:18and I'm normally home just before 11:00.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20It's not really about talent.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22It's more about the dedication.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25You need to train hard to get the skills.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28You need the kind of, the right kind of mindset.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33Making it to London was amazing,
0:02:33 > 0:02:36but as I'm still young I really crave more.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39A second Paralympics would just be incredible.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41I will work as hard as I can to get there.
0:02:47 > 0:02:48Unlike me, and Hattie,
0:02:48 > 0:02:52Reece has not been spotted by the Paralympic selectors yet.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Reece never thought he'd be good at sport because of cerebral palsy,
0:02:55 > 0:02:58which affects his speech, muscle strength and co-ordination.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05I started running at school, like,
0:03:05 > 0:03:07one of my PE teachers said,
0:03:07 > 0:03:10"Oh, you've got potential there."
0:03:12 > 0:03:17When I were younger, and I were kind of rubbish at sport, really.
0:03:17 > 0:03:22I was struggling just to throw a bean bag in a bucket.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24Me having cerebral palsy
0:03:24 > 0:03:29made people perceive that I wasn't very good at sports.
0:03:29 > 0:03:34They used to just expect you not to be able to run, to catch, to throw,
0:03:34 > 0:03:38because they didn't have no knowledge about the disability.
0:03:38 > 0:03:40Reece has surprised not only himself,
0:03:40 > 0:03:45but his dad, his mum, twin brother Kaylan and sister Becks.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48My family is really supportive.
0:03:48 > 0:03:53We do fall out and have banter, like any other family.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58But, really, they really supported me
0:03:58 > 0:04:03about what I'm doing at the moment and they really do
0:04:03 > 0:04:06think that I can do well in it.
0:04:06 > 0:04:10And even my twin brother, Kaylan.
0:04:10 > 0:04:12Oh... that isn't fair!
0:04:13 > 0:04:17Even though he might not like it, he is very supportive,
0:04:17 > 0:04:21but he never really, like, in not a very obvious way.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24I do get kind of jealous with it sometimes.
0:04:24 > 0:04:29Secretly, I am really proud of him, but I don't really tell him, really.
0:04:29 > 0:04:33Because that would be another thing what he can wind me
0:04:33 > 0:04:35up about, "Oh, you're proud of me though."
0:04:35 > 0:04:39Even though Reece isn't on any official Paralympic training squad,
0:04:39 > 0:04:41he pushes himself really hard.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45Two nights a week with the local Rotherham Harriers Athletics club...
0:04:45 > 0:04:46And three nights at the gym.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52Having school and going to the gym
0:04:52 > 0:04:55and training all in one week
0:04:55 > 0:04:59all during the year is a huge amount of pressure on me.
0:04:59 > 0:05:05Because I need to focus on my studies,
0:05:05 > 0:05:09just in case running doesn't go into my favour,
0:05:09 > 0:05:11so I can get a job.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15And if running does go in my favour, it's a bonus.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18And it would earn him cool points with his mates too.
0:05:18 > 0:05:21If Reece made it to Rio, that would be pretty amazing,
0:05:21 > 0:05:22and I'd be proud of him.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24I'd be screaming in front of the TV,
0:05:24 > 0:05:26just cheering him on.
0:05:29 > 0:05:31Set!
0:05:31 > 0:05:33Go!
0:05:33 > 0:05:34With the hundred metres,
0:05:34 > 0:05:40I love the fact that there's someone to race against.
0:05:40 > 0:05:41And you have to beat them.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44You've got no other choice and it's over
0:05:44 > 0:05:48and done with within a split second.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54You've only got the time it takes you
0:05:54 > 0:05:56to get from the start line
0:05:56 > 0:06:01to the finish line to think about it. Which isn't long.
0:06:01 > 0:06:06And all you're thinking is I need to be in.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08It gives me more motivation.
0:06:13 > 0:06:17Hattie has already made it on to the Archery GB Training Squad.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19That's pretty cool. But there was a time
0:06:19 > 0:06:21when she didn't think she could take part in any sport.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26I got into archery four years ago.
0:06:26 > 0:06:27I fell ill at the age of eight...
0:06:27 > 0:06:32And my illness basically is an undiagnosed illness,
0:06:32 > 0:06:34so I don't have a name for my illness.
0:06:34 > 0:06:38Basically it affects my legs.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42I'm paralysed from the waist down. I have pain 24/7,
0:06:42 > 0:06:45so I have pain all day.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48When I was able bodied, I was a massive swimmer and gymnast.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52So I thought, "My world has ended."
0:06:52 > 0:06:54I didn't want to carry on with life.
0:06:54 > 0:06:56Mum and Dad were like,
0:06:56 > 0:07:00"Hang on though, because there's the Paralympics.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03"Don't rule sport out completely."
0:07:03 > 0:07:05So they took me up to Stoke Mandeville.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08Up there, they do weekends where you can go and try
0:07:08 > 0:07:11different disabled sport.
0:07:11 > 0:07:16And I shot my first six arrows and they all went in the gold.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18He says, "you've got a natural talent".
0:07:18 > 0:07:19I'm like, "Nah, it's not me".
0:07:19 > 0:07:25So I shot my next six arrows and they all went in the gold.
0:07:25 > 0:07:29He spoke to Mum and Dad at the end of the day and he says,
0:07:29 > 0:07:31"Your daughter's got natural talent.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34"You need to get her into a club as soon as possible."
0:07:34 > 0:07:36"I will put her name forward to GB.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39"We'll probably watch her for a year
0:07:39 > 0:07:41"and then we'll see where it takes us from there."
0:07:45 > 0:07:47Since then, Hattie has earned a place on the Archery GB
0:07:47 > 0:07:51training squad, shot the highest scores for her age in her county
0:07:51 > 0:07:53and won a quiver load of medals.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57She's now preparing for her first ever international appearance.
0:07:59 > 0:08:03This is my Dad's garage, AKA the shooting range.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05I come in here when the weather's bad.
0:08:05 > 0:08:11We shoot up to half an hour to an hour, or 100 arrows.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15And GB squad like us doing this to make our muscles remember
0:08:15 > 0:08:17what we're meant to be doing.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20In a few days, Hattie will be heading to Stoke Mandeville
0:08:20 > 0:08:23famous for being the birthplace of the Paralympics.
0:08:23 > 0:08:27There, she must hold her nerve in her first international.
0:08:30 > 0:08:34Today, I've been invited here to the English Institute of Sport
0:08:34 > 0:08:37so people who are interested in getting involved in disability
0:08:37 > 0:08:40sports can meet Paralympians like me
0:08:40 > 0:08:43and my friend Sam Ruddock and personal hero
0:08:43 > 0:08:45Hannah Cockcroft.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48This is Sam Ruddock, T35 sprinter.
0:08:50 > 0:08:53100 and 200 metres. You forgot that bit.
0:08:53 > 0:08:55- 100 and 200 metres. - There's all sorts of sprints.
0:08:55 > 0:08:56Yeah. I do 100, personally.
0:08:56 > 0:08:59And 35 is the cerebral palsy classification.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02- Yeah. And I'm T42, which is... - The amputee classification.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05- Which is...we're better.- So there's nothing really wrong with you.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08What? Well, there's nothing wrong with you. you've got all four limbs.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11- But you're missing one. - Yeah, but yours are all...weird.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13- We could argue about this... - Yeah, I know...
0:09:13 > 0:09:16So here is one of the Paralympic legends, Hannah Cockcroft.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19Double gold medallist and MBE.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21That's me - hi!
0:09:21 > 0:09:24It's so good to catch up and talk about the games.
0:09:24 > 0:09:25Kind of wish we did it every day, you know?
0:09:25 > 0:09:29It's living with your best friends, for like a month,
0:09:29 > 0:09:31and taking part in something
0:09:31 > 0:09:34that was the greatest thing that Britain's ever seen, I guess.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37I know. I loved meeting all the different people though.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40- Can I touch your medals, Hannah? - Of course you can, there you go.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42- Don't drop them. - I'll try not to.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44We've had a few people drop them here.
0:09:44 > 0:09:46Really? Chipping the chair?
0:09:46 > 0:09:49I'm not bothered about the chair, what about the medals?!
0:09:49 > 0:09:50Chipping the medals.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53I'm proud that I was alongside Hannah and Sam in 2012,
0:09:53 > 0:09:56but my sitting volleyball team didn't win any medals.
0:09:56 > 0:09:59And, now, six months after the games,
0:09:59 > 0:10:01we've had some really bad news.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04When UK Sport announced that sitting volleyball would have it's
0:10:04 > 0:10:06funding cut it really was a massive shock.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09London really made me want Rio even more. And I want it
0:10:09 > 0:10:12so much that I'm willing to train as hard as I can to try and get there.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15So at the minute, I'm just doing other sports that I enjoy.
0:10:15 > 0:10:17And if that takes me further then that's great.
0:10:17 > 0:10:21At the moment I've been doing a lot of running, which is sprinting.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23I do feel pressure to keep my school grades up,
0:10:23 > 0:10:26because if they slip it would be down to sport.
0:10:26 > 0:10:28So at the moment, it's just a matter of
0:10:28 > 0:10:32keeping my grades up. People don't realise that to become
0:10:32 > 0:10:35as good as we are, we have to keep training.
0:10:35 > 0:10:37And to get even better you have to keep training.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43As well as training in the evening,
0:10:43 > 0:10:47I'm lucky my school has an amazing gym, so I can work out here too.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50And what training have you done this week since I saw you last?
0:10:50 > 0:10:51On Monday I had athletics,
0:10:51 > 0:10:53on Tuesday I was down at the track.
0:10:53 > 0:10:59tonight I'm doing more athletics.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01Sometimes she looks like she's struggling. So,
0:11:01 > 0:11:03she comes into school quite tired,
0:11:03 > 0:11:04cos she'll probably just be running round
0:11:04 > 0:11:07the track for like a couple of hours.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09Whilst I'm at home, eating.
0:11:09 > 0:11:10I don't know how she gets so much drive.
0:11:10 > 0:11:14I think the Paralympics has really boosted her confidence
0:11:14 > 0:11:18and now she's on to go do anything really.
0:11:19 > 0:11:23I'd say, out of the sort of 25 or so students that I work with
0:11:23 > 0:11:25on the performance programme, she probably has one of the most
0:11:25 > 0:11:29can do attitudes in that she never lets anything stop her
0:11:29 > 0:11:31and always has a go at everything as well.
0:11:31 > 0:11:35She's a real pleasure to work with. Very motivating for me as well,
0:11:35 > 0:11:37and inspiring to other students.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40Somebody once said to me that hard work beats talent
0:11:40 > 0:11:42when talent doesn't work hard.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45But I think that Julie has a little bit of both of those.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47Awww. Thanks, Mrs Williams.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51I've got a twin brother Joseph, who also does athletics.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54He's a hammer thrower. He helps me through a lot of things.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56He gives me advice.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59We do get competitive at things but obviously his main sports,
0:11:59 > 0:12:03like rugby aren't exactly ones I'm going to get great at.
0:12:03 > 0:12:04So we kind of just support each other
0:12:04 > 0:12:06and talk to each other, which is really good.
0:12:06 > 0:12:10When we were kids she was not very sporty at all,
0:12:10 > 0:12:14she was always the academic one and I was always the sporty one.
0:12:14 > 0:12:16She will definitely keep it up.
0:12:16 > 0:12:21And she definitely has the character to be very determined.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25My sprint times are really good even on my hydraulic leg.
0:12:25 > 0:12:29But to get one step closer to Rio, I will need to get a running blade.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35Even though he hasn't been talent spotted yet, Reece's family
0:12:35 > 0:12:37have already started to dream
0:12:37 > 0:12:39about having a paralympian in the family.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42Rebecca, Reece, Kaylan! Breakfast!
0:12:42 > 0:12:45If he made it, it would be absolutely amazing,
0:12:45 > 0:12:47and I would be really proud of him.
0:12:47 > 0:12:49I just think it would be a free holiday though,
0:12:49 > 0:12:53- to be honest with you.- So you need to do it, you need to get to Rio.
0:12:55 > 0:12:56For Kaylan to get his holiday,
0:12:56 > 0:12:59Reece's next step is to get noticed by British Athletics
0:12:59 > 0:13:01at their Open Day in Sheffield.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04It'll be the first time they will see Reece sprint
0:13:04 > 0:13:06and he really needs to stand out.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11Do you get nervous when you're racing?
0:13:11 > 0:13:14Course I do. Run faster, in't it?
0:13:14 > 0:13:17If you didn't get nervous you'd be cocky, wouldn't you?
0:13:17 > 0:13:18No-one likes a cocky person.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20No. Nobody likes a cocky person.
0:13:23 > 0:13:25Hattie's talent was discovered at an event like this
0:13:25 > 0:13:29and now she's on the archery training squad.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31Reece is hoping to make a good impression on Katie
0:13:31 > 0:13:33from British Athletics.
0:13:33 > 0:13:36She's one of the team of people who helps decide which athletes
0:13:36 > 0:13:38get selected for training programmes.
0:13:38 > 0:13:40Today for us is about giving the athletes
0:13:40 > 0:13:44an opportunity to come along and find out what
0:13:44 > 0:13:49other pathways there are available in Paralympic athletics.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53When we're spotting talent within Paralympic athletics,
0:13:53 > 0:13:56a lot of the time we're just looking for naturally sporty,
0:13:56 > 0:13:58athletic people.
0:13:58 > 0:14:02You know, regardless of their experience within the sport,
0:14:02 > 0:14:05just the enthusiasm. And then the build, body shape.
0:14:07 > 0:14:09As well as the top coaches giving advice,
0:14:09 > 0:14:12my friends Sam and Hannah are here to inspire
0:14:12 > 0:14:14and help out with the training.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16I'm not that small, guys!
0:14:19 > 0:14:21I started out wheelchair racing on a day like today
0:14:21 > 0:14:23and I've seen some
0:14:23 > 0:14:27incredible young people here today, coming and having a go.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30And that is the beginning of their new life.
0:14:30 > 0:14:32Keep your arms out, like a cross.
0:14:32 > 0:14:35I avoided athletics all the way through my childhood
0:14:35 > 0:14:38and growing up, because I had cerebral palsy.
0:14:38 > 0:14:41I couldn't walk very well, I could barely even sprint.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43So the prospect of athletics actually scared me.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46One, two, three, team! Yeah, buddy.
0:14:46 > 0:14:50I guess without athletics, I wouldn't be where I am today.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53It most definitely has changed my life completely. I mean,
0:14:53 > 0:14:56it gave me a complete new sense of confidence and independence
0:14:56 > 0:14:58and kind of freedom.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01And it all comes with sport. And it all comes with athletics.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03And just being able to say that, yeah,
0:15:03 > 0:15:05I can go really fast, and, you know,
0:15:05 > 0:15:09I got two gold medals doing it, so it's kind of made my life
0:15:09 > 0:15:10what it is today. So incredible.
0:15:10 > 0:15:14I know what she means. I would love to win gold.
0:15:14 > 0:15:15Reece would too!
0:15:15 > 0:15:18But gold medals are a long way off for him.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21If he does well today and stands out from all the other athletes here,
0:15:21 > 0:15:23he could be one step closer to his dream.
0:15:23 > 0:15:26But he will have to wait until the end of the day to find out.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35Hattie's next step in archery is to attend her very first
0:15:35 > 0:15:38international event at Stoke Mandeville.
0:15:38 > 0:15:40The GB coach will be watching Hattie closely to see
0:15:40 > 0:15:43if she can hold her nerve and shoot straight under pressure.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52Diamond was very important to me because it's my first
0:15:52 > 0:15:56international, there's people coming from all over the world.
0:15:56 > 0:15:59You want them to see how good you are.
0:15:59 > 0:16:03And there's people from the Paralympic Archery Committee.
0:16:03 > 0:16:06I have to keep my nerve and keep cool and calm
0:16:06 > 0:16:08and collected about it.
0:16:08 > 0:16:11But also shoot strong
0:16:11 > 0:16:15and make sure that every shot is as clean as I can make it.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17Hattie is so determined to do well she's
0:16:17 > 0:16:19been training from her hospital bed.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22Yeah, I have been in the hospital quite a lot recently.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25With archery you have exercises you can do,
0:16:25 > 0:16:29so I've been able to do them through my hospital appointments.
0:16:29 > 0:16:31And from my hospital bed and stuff.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33I have joked, should put a boss down the end of the corridor
0:16:33 > 0:16:36and I'll shoot from my hospital bed.
0:16:36 > 0:16:38But for some reason they said no.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44Hattie's mental strength is incredible. And crucial for archery.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47The sport demands total precision and concentration.
0:16:47 > 0:16:51So to keep her 100% focused for Stoke Mandeville, Simon,
0:16:51 > 0:16:55a sports psychologist, is helping Hattie get in the zone.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57What we're going to do, the connection between your mind
0:16:57 > 0:17:01and your body is your breath, OK? Is your breathing.
0:17:01 > 0:17:04I think these sessions with Simon are really helpful.
0:17:04 > 0:17:09We have a really good in depth conversation on how my last
0:17:09 > 0:17:11competition went, how I felt afterwards.
0:17:11 > 0:17:18So my brain is ready and engaged. And also visually, so
0:17:18 > 0:17:24visualising my really good arrows hitting the custard, or the gold.
0:17:24 > 0:17:27Absolutely. So if you say I'm going to try to do something,
0:17:27 > 0:17:31you're kind of giving yourself a little bit of a get-out clause.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34Some of the mental side of things does help me
0:17:34 > 0:17:36in every day-to-day life.
0:17:36 > 0:17:41I think being disabled, you find a lot of hurdles and you can find
0:17:41 > 0:17:44a lot of negatives within your life. But it's OK,
0:17:44 > 0:17:49because I can do archery, I can compete for my country.
0:17:49 > 0:17:51I can still go out with my friends,
0:17:51 > 0:17:53I can still have a really good laugh.
0:17:53 > 0:17:57And I'm thankful to Simon, cos I think it's helped me
0:17:57 > 0:17:59even more as a person.
0:17:59 > 0:18:00What we're doing here,
0:18:00 > 0:18:04is helping just kind of unscrew the jar of potential.
0:18:06 > 0:18:08In preparation for a competition,
0:18:08 > 0:18:12us athletes will do anything to give us the edge over our competitors!
0:18:16 > 0:18:18Do you think this haircut is going to have any influence on how
0:18:18 > 0:18:22- you perform at the week?- Yeah, it will make me more streamlined.
0:18:36 > 0:18:38Hattie's put in the training, now she just has to prove
0:18:38 > 0:18:41she can hold her nerve and stay focused under
0:18:41 > 0:18:44pressure during her big event in a few days' time. Good luck, Hattie!
0:18:45 > 0:18:47And wish me luck too.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50This is a huge new step for me. I've got my blade!
0:18:55 > 0:18:59When I got the new leg I did realise the difference really quickly.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02And it was exciting to learn how to use it better,
0:19:02 > 0:19:05which I'm doing at the moment cos it's quite new.
0:19:07 > 0:19:10Most amputees wouldn't be able to get one without raising
0:19:10 > 0:19:13a fund or purchasing it.
0:19:13 > 0:19:17I'm really lucky to have this. As my running times are actually good,
0:19:17 > 0:19:20my coach recommended me for sponsorship,
0:19:20 > 0:19:22so I got the blade on loan.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25If I wasn't sponsored, the blade alone would have cost £1,500.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30To keep it, I just need to show that I use it consistently,
0:19:30 > 0:19:33continuously, show that I'm getting better on it.
0:19:33 > 0:19:37It's very fair, because it's not just a cheap bit of equipment,
0:19:37 > 0:19:40so if they're going to give it to someone then
0:19:40 > 0:19:42they want to give it to someone who's actually using it.
0:19:42 > 0:19:44It wants to hit the boot here and come down, bang.
0:19:44 > 0:19:46It'll take some time.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48At the moment, volleyball training is quite inconsistent
0:19:48 > 0:19:52because of funding problems, so I'm more consistent
0:19:52 > 0:19:53in my athletics training.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56My next personal target is to keep training and
0:19:56 > 0:19:59probably in the long term, will just be getting my time lower
0:19:59 > 0:20:01and lower and lower.
0:20:01 > 0:20:05Until I can start competing at maybe a slightly higher level.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12Reece has been at Sheffield all day now working hard.
0:20:12 > 0:20:15But has he done enough to stand out from everyone else
0:20:15 > 0:20:17and impress Katie from British Athletics?
0:20:17 > 0:20:20There's a couple of athletes that we've seen today that we'll
0:20:20 > 0:20:21look to approach.
0:20:21 > 0:20:25Just from first sort of instincts and looking at them,
0:20:25 > 0:20:28they're athletic, they're fit,
0:20:28 > 0:20:30they're enthused to take it further,
0:20:30 > 0:20:33and they're in a good training environment.
0:20:33 > 0:20:35Set... HE BLOWS THE WHISTLE
0:20:37 > 0:20:40So Katie has only chosen two out of everyone here.
0:20:40 > 0:20:43Is Reece going to be one of them?
0:20:43 > 0:20:46I've seen you on the track, you're very quick out of those blocks,
0:20:46 > 0:20:49- aren't you?- Yeah. - You've been working on that.
0:20:49 > 0:20:51- And we want you to keep up that work.- Yeah.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54We're going to monitor your performances through competition.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56And I do speak to your coach regularly as well, to see
0:20:56 > 0:20:58that you're doing what you should be doing.
0:20:58 > 0:21:01- And you're going to be on our radar. - Yeah.
0:21:01 > 0:21:04- How does that sound?- Pretty good. - OK. Cool.
0:21:06 > 0:21:10I'm really excited, because I wouldn't have thought
0:21:10 > 0:21:15that from just starting four months ago she said that
0:21:15 > 0:21:18I've got potential talent. It's unbelievable.
0:21:20 > 0:21:24That's fantastic news! I'm so happy for Reece.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27I know how hard it is to get noticed as an athlete
0:21:27 > 0:21:29and Reece is already starting to stand out.
0:21:29 > 0:21:31It's going to take a lot more hard work
0:21:31 > 0:21:35and Reece has to get faster, but after today, he's in with a chance.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39It's now Hattie's big day.
0:21:39 > 0:21:42Her first appearance in an international competition.
0:21:45 > 0:21:48Six years ago, I never thought we'd even get to
0:21:48 > 0:21:50an event like this for Hattie.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53She, you know, thought her world had ended.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55Sport was never going to be her thing.
0:21:55 > 0:21:58The atmosphere is electric here today.
0:21:58 > 0:22:00We've got a load of countries
0:22:00 > 0:22:03from all over coming and shooting, and we're all supporting
0:22:03 > 0:22:07each other, as well as trying to beat each other at the same time.
0:22:08 > 0:22:10To be here today
0:22:10 > 0:22:11and shooting against the gold medallist
0:22:11 > 0:22:13and the silver medallist from last year,
0:22:13 > 0:22:15it's rather amazing that I've actually,
0:22:15 > 0:22:19I've got myself here. That nobody's handed it to me.
0:22:19 > 0:22:24It is very unusual for a 14-year-old to be at a shoot of this standard.
0:22:24 > 0:22:27If she's unable to, say, cope with the pressure
0:22:27 > 0:22:31and she gets very nervous, she might find today
0:22:31 > 0:22:34that she herself doesn't feel like going on.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37So it lets us look and see as coaches
0:22:37 > 0:22:39if we think that she has the mental capacity
0:22:39 > 0:22:41to deal with it.
0:22:50 > 0:22:54Hattie's doing really well. She's got 173 in two dozen.
0:22:54 > 0:22:57The highest she can get is 720.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00But, yes, she's doing OK. That means she's...
0:23:00 > 0:23:01she's on track.
0:23:07 > 0:23:09So far, so good.
0:23:09 > 0:23:12Hattie now just needs to keep on shooting straight and true.
0:23:20 > 0:23:23CLOCK BEEPS
0:23:25 > 0:23:28I feel it went really well, better than I expected.
0:23:28 > 0:23:32There was a few dodgy arrows. I know where I went wrong with that.
0:23:32 > 0:23:36It felt really amazing amongst all of these different
0:23:36 > 0:23:40international archers. I'd love to do it again,
0:23:40 > 0:23:46and hopefully next time I might be one of the elite archers.
0:23:46 > 0:23:48This is Mel Clarke.
0:23:48 > 0:23:51She's a world champion, won medals in two Paralympics
0:23:51 > 0:23:53and is Hattie's friend.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56Like Hattie, Mel became disabled when she was young.
0:23:56 > 0:23:58I think she did really well, you know.
0:23:58 > 0:24:01She shot a personal best and the weather's been quite tricky.
0:24:01 > 0:24:03So, she looks quite pleased with herself.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06She came over and was bouncing. So, yeah, it was a good competition
0:24:06 > 0:24:08and a good result for her. It's a challenge to compete on a field
0:24:08 > 0:24:10when there is international archers here.
0:24:10 > 0:24:12There's a lot of paralympians here.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15A lot of people who've achieved great things. And to hold the nerve
0:24:15 > 0:24:17and to shoot as well as she did is phenomenal.
0:24:17 > 0:24:18And stands her in great stead
0:24:18 > 0:24:21for international competitions in the future.
0:24:21 > 0:24:24Knowing what Mel's been through, it really does make you
0:24:24 > 0:24:27determined to overcome whatever comes in your life as well.
0:24:27 > 0:24:30And yeah, I think she's a really big inspiration
0:24:30 > 0:24:31in my life at the moment.
0:24:33 > 0:24:35Only at the moment though.
0:24:38 > 0:24:40She performed very well, she really did.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42Her performance today was really good.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44We couldn't have asked any more from her.
0:24:44 > 0:24:48The fact that she was able to cope with the additional pressures
0:24:48 > 0:24:53was absolutely excellent. Because if you looked along the line
0:24:53 > 0:24:55today, many of these people,
0:24:55 > 0:24:57many of these archers were quite stressed.
0:24:57 > 0:24:58They might not have shown it,
0:24:58 > 0:25:00but there was quite a few of them stressed,
0:25:00 > 0:25:04not happy with their performances, things like that.
0:25:04 > 0:25:08But Hattie did just...keep calm.
0:25:08 > 0:25:09She kept on with it.
0:25:09 > 0:25:14I am looking definitely towards 2020 with Harriet.
0:25:14 > 0:25:16To give her that depth of experience.
0:25:16 > 0:25:19But you never know, Rio is there.
0:25:19 > 0:25:21And I think, as you saw, she's a very determined young lady,
0:25:21 > 0:25:26and I think that the possibility is that she may make it,
0:25:26 > 0:25:28with a lot of hard work.
0:25:28 > 0:25:32With her attitude at the moment, if that continues, she's got it.
0:25:42 > 0:25:44I'm now training with Hayley Ginn.
0:25:44 > 0:25:46She trained gold medallist Jonnie Peacock
0:25:46 > 0:25:49and I'm lucky to have her coaching me.
0:25:49 > 0:25:52I've continued to train hard, so I'm allowed to keep my blade.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55Nine...ten...
0:25:55 > 0:25:58She's getting on fantastically well.
0:25:58 > 0:26:01The biggest thing with Julie is her ability to overcome that
0:26:01 > 0:26:03fear of something new.
0:26:03 > 0:26:06So obviously with trying these new prosthetics,
0:26:06 > 0:26:09the blade as such, if she falls over she gets up and carries on.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11And physically with the power she has,
0:26:11 > 0:26:14she's able to throw herself, literally, into the training.
0:26:14 > 0:26:16One and...go!
0:26:17 > 0:26:20I'm definitely getting more used to the blade now.
0:26:20 > 0:26:22I'm using it more, it's fitting better
0:26:22 > 0:26:26and everything is in place just to get better technically now.
0:26:26 > 0:26:27One...
0:26:27 > 0:26:29One thing we certainly don't have to work on with her is
0:26:29 > 0:26:32her motivation. But the biggest, most important thing for me
0:26:32 > 0:26:35is making sure that she doesn't take on too much.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38And that she doesn't burn herself out.
0:26:38 > 0:26:40With the attitude that she has to the sport,
0:26:40 > 0:26:43and the physical attributes she has as an athlete,
0:26:43 > 0:26:46already, I think she's in with a very good chance.
0:26:46 > 0:26:48I'm not really targeting a specific time for Rio,
0:26:48 > 0:26:50but if I want to get to get to that final,
0:26:50 > 0:26:53I do have to knock seconds off.
0:26:53 > 0:26:57For a good podium potential time, I have to be sub 16.
0:26:57 > 0:26:59For someone in my class, it's,
0:26:59 > 0:27:02that's what you have to get to be on top of the world.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07So this is just the beginning of our long Race for Rio...
0:27:07 > 0:27:11Hattie was amazing. She kept her cool at her first international.
0:27:11 > 0:27:13And that hard work's paid off.
0:27:13 > 0:27:16Reece got noticed by British Athletics.
0:27:16 > 0:27:18So it's in me reach now...
0:27:18 > 0:27:21As for me, well as I said, it's complicated,
0:27:21 > 0:27:23but unofficially I'm ranked
0:27:23 > 0:27:25the 10th fastest in the world in the 100 metre sprint!
0:27:25 > 0:27:28And I will continue to do whatever it takes to get to Rio.
0:27:28 > 0:27:30Wish us luck!
