0:00:21 > 0:00:25have just finished school for the summer, but we're not going back.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28So that's it, really - I've finished Westcliff.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Everything's about to change.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32Because I found out in February, I had to wait,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35and I think that's what makes it special, because, like,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37it is like a Christmas present!

0:00:37 > 0:00:38We're leaving behind all we know,

0:00:38 > 0:00:41and moving miles away from our friends and family.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43I'm not going to act like something that I'm not, I'm able to

0:00:43 > 0:00:46tell them who I am, where I've come from.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49We've won places at a really famous school...

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..where pupils wear a uniform of tailcoats and pinstriped trousers.

0:00:58 > 0:00:59Perfect.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02It feels quite heavy back here, but it's not too bad.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05I can't describe it, it just feels so good.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07It's a bit stuffy!

0:01:09 > 0:01:10The school where the Prime Minister

0:01:10 > 0:01:12and Princes William and Harry were educated.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15We're off to Eton College, the most famous school in the world,

0:01:15 > 0:01:19- for this My Life two-part special. - SCHOOL BELL RINGS

0:01:20 > 0:01:23My name's Fara and I live with my family in London.

0:01:23 > 0:01:28Well, my mum wanted me to go to Eton ever since I was born, really.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30She just liked the idea of me going to

0:01:30 > 0:01:33one of the best schools in the country.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36We applied last summer, went and sat the exam,

0:01:36 > 0:01:40the interviews... Then eventually, I got through, and I'm here today.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45The new foundation scholarship is a scholarship aimed at boys

0:01:45 > 0:01:48who have attended a state school

0:01:48 > 0:01:51for in excess of seven or eight years.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55Normally, it would cost more than £33,000 a year to study at Eton.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57That's a lot of money.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00We don't pay that, and we don't even pay for our uniforms.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02Another Eton boy. There you go.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05MUSIC IN STYLE OF GANGNAM STYLE: # Ya, ya, ya, ya!

0:02:05 > 0:02:07# Ya, we've got Eton Style! #

0:02:10 > 0:02:11# I don't know

0:02:11 > 0:02:12# Why we all wear these clothes

0:02:12 > 0:02:14# But baby, baby, just come on

0:02:14 > 0:02:16# And watch me row

0:02:16 > 0:02:18- # We got Eton style... - We got Eton style...! #

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Hopefully I'll be able to send MY child to the school,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26and I wouldn't have to put them through the scholarship process,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29I could just apply through common entrance, because I would have

0:02:29 > 0:02:31made use of the opportunities given to me.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Hello. My name is James.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37I'm from Leigh. My parents run this takeaway,

0:02:37 > 0:02:39and I live above the shop.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42- PHONE RINGS - Hello, Hong Kong Takeaway?

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Yeah, so, one chicken, and one chicken balls, yeah...

0:02:45 > 0:02:47OK. Thank you, bye.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49The Eton application really came about

0:02:49 > 0:02:53when I was, erm, bored in one of my lessons -

0:02:53 > 0:02:55you know, I was daydreaming.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58And I just thought, I could really get a...

0:02:58 > 0:03:01a lot out of Eton, if I did go there.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05My parents, you know, my mum comes from China,

0:03:05 > 0:03:08my dad comes from a different background.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10They wouldn't have at all thought of this.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13It was just me, because I knew a bit more about what was happening.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16And I found the new foundation scholarship,

0:03:16 > 0:03:18which was, in a way, just right.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22If I didn't take the scholarship, I would be in a financial crisis.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28My name's Theo, and I live with my mum, dad and sister Chloe.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34I've been county champion three years in a row.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38I train 6-9 times a week.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41I just love it!

0:03:41 > 0:03:44So, what's swimming got to do with how I got into Eton, Dad?

0:03:44 > 0:03:48I was sitting, one of the many times I sit on the poolside,

0:03:48 > 0:03:50at stupid o'clock in the morning,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53watching Theo go up and down and talking to another parent,

0:03:53 > 0:03:57who had a son a year older than Theo, and I hadn't seen him around.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01And we got into conversation, and she said, "Yeah, he's at Eton."

0:04:01 > 0:04:03And I thought, "Oh, my God, how did he get there?!"

0:04:04 > 0:04:08My foundation for a lot of my achievements has been my dad,

0:04:08 > 0:04:10because he's been my pusher.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Without him, I wouldn't be going to Eton.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17I loved my old school, but I needed more.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20I felt... I felt like a big fish in a small pond.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24When I go to Eton, I'll be back to the small fish again.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28Just...delving into new depths!

0:04:28 > 0:04:30Now you know how we got into Eton,

0:04:30 > 0:04:34we've got to prep for a totally new subject - Latin -

0:04:34 > 0:04:36to catch up to the same level as our classmates.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40So, how much Latin have you done?

0:04:41 > 0:04:45Erm, Latin-wise, erm, I've only done a bit, I haven't done...too much.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48So, don't you want to catch up to Theo and I?

0:04:48 > 0:04:50You just want to be a long ranger?

0:04:51 > 0:04:54No, I'm not like... You know, I'm not trying to catch up

0:04:54 > 0:04:57for anyone, I'm just doing what I think is comfortable for me.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01- I have to go now, James.- OK, see ya.

0:05:01 > 0:05:02See you at school. Bye.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05Eton's a full-time boarding school.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08We'll be living there, so we're packing almost everything we own.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11# Oh, look at me

0:05:11 > 0:05:13# So ordinary... #

0:05:13 > 0:05:15My suitcase is right here,

0:05:15 > 0:05:18and also you've got here, which is another, smaller,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21which is just with most of my clothes in.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Compared to some other people, I'm definitely a bit lighter.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Yesterday, erm, I went and did my

0:05:27 > 0:05:29school shopping.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36Peace!

0:05:36 > 0:05:38'It's my last night at home.'

0:05:38 > 0:05:40I don't like it.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44I don't like fish and I don't like Chinese chicken.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47What I really like is a pie - hearty pie.

0:05:47 > 0:05:48I like pies.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55I've been really the only child in this family for a long time,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57you see. Having other boys to be with, is, you know,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00it's great, because I get to, you know,

0:06:00 > 0:06:04put the virtual world in the bin and start a new, real-life world.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09I'll definitely miss home.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Yeah, everything's all packed up, tidied up.

0:06:15 > 0:06:16Goodbye.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20After eight months of waiting, the big day is finally here.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23I'm feeling nervous.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24I never thought I'd say it,

0:06:24 > 0:06:27but I actually do feel nervous today.

0:06:27 > 0:06:28It's such a big thing.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33I've joined a secondary school, I've joined a primary school,

0:06:33 > 0:06:35but when it's something like this scale,

0:06:35 > 0:06:36it's kind of scary.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Theo, You've forgotten something really important?

0:06:40 > 0:06:41What?

0:06:41 > 0:06:42Your wand.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47We're all packed up and we're off.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50Boys come to Eton from all over the world,

0:06:50 > 0:06:53but lucky for me it's only a two hour train ride from Essex.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57I thought Eton was only on St Trinians.

0:06:57 > 0:06:58LAUGHTER

0:06:58 > 0:06:59Mum, what did you say?

0:06:59 > 0:07:02I said I didn't think they'd have people like us.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04That's absolutely nothing to do with it.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06But that's a bad stereotype, isn't it?

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Because they are really accepting of us.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10- I know that now. - Yeah, I know. I was only saying.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- But we all had our preconceptions. - I thought it was above our station.

0:07:13 > 0:07:14Yeah, same.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16We're really close to Eton.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18I think we're about three to four miles away now.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23I'm really getting excited now, I'm not far away.

0:07:23 > 0:07:24Across the bridge now.

0:07:24 > 0:07:25We're here. We're here.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Dad, I'm going to Eton.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32You are going to Eton.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Eton's been around since 1440.

0:07:39 > 0:07:40Not the time the year!

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Lots of famous people and 19 prime ministers

0:07:44 > 0:07:46have come here.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Today, around 1,300 boys study at Eton.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51It's the biggest boarding school in the country,

0:07:51 > 0:07:54with 250 on scholarships or bursaries like us.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Even the headmaster was once a scholarship boy here.

0:07:57 > 0:07:58To see him on his way,

0:07:58 > 0:08:02I see three underlying things from your son's education at Eton.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04We will expect him in the first place

0:08:04 > 0:08:07to set himself the highest standards.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10Second, we will expect your son to celebrate

0:08:10 > 0:08:14the breadth of his school education.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16And that brings me to my third theme -

0:08:16 > 0:08:20we will expect your son to celebrate his own individuality

0:08:20 > 0:08:23and to respect the differentness of others

0:08:23 > 0:08:25and to learn to work with them.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31Fara, James and I will live in different boarding houses,

0:08:31 > 0:08:33each with around 50 boys in total.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37These will be our homes for the next five years.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Some things are like a normal house -

0:08:38 > 0:08:41we each have our own bedroom, a kitchen -

0:08:41 > 0:08:42although we never really cook -

0:08:42 > 0:08:44and shared bathrooms.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46But in some ways, it's different -

0:08:46 > 0:08:49we have a boot room, place to hang our tails and pigeon holes.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53It's my first day. I've been here about...

0:08:55 > 0:08:58..three hours. This is my room here.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01This is the view from my window.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03I don't feel nervous any more, now.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05It's the first day of the rest of my life, I guess.

0:09:07 > 0:09:08It's going to be good.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11MUSIC: "Lightning Bolt" by Jake Bugg

0:09:16 > 0:09:17SCHOOL BELL RINGS

0:09:18 > 0:09:20It's half past seven in the morning,

0:09:20 > 0:09:22so I'm just going to go and wake the boys up.

0:09:25 > 0:09:26Morning, Hamish.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Each house has a Master and a Dame who are in charge.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Come on, Phillip.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35The dame is bit like our mum. She makes sure we get up on time.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Oh my goodness, Theo.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45Theo's up, but he's working and his room's a mess.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48The school day starts as soon as we wake up.

0:09:48 > 0:09:49We can't stay in our PJs,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52we have to put on our uniforms before breakfast.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Hiya.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59I'm about to get changed now and go to Bekynton,

0:09:59 > 0:10:02which is where half the houses go and eat their meals.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10Breakfast for me and Fara is at the school canteen.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Meal times are different for me because I eat in my house,

0:10:15 > 0:10:17so I don't need to be fully dressed before I walk downstairs

0:10:17 > 0:10:20for my favourite meal of the day - breakfast!

0:10:21 > 0:10:22I hope the toast isn't burnt.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27The school canteen has a lot of choice.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34And our dames sit with us at breakfast

0:10:34 > 0:10:37to make sure we've eaten properly...

0:10:37 > 0:10:38just like our mums.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43We start at Eton at 13, so year 9,

0:10:43 > 0:10:44but here it's called F block.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48All F and E block boys attend lower chapel

0:10:48 > 0:10:50six times a week with a break on Thursdays.

0:10:52 > 0:10:53Ever since Eton started,

0:10:53 > 0:10:56boys have always started the day with chapel.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58It's tradition.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- Do you enjoy chapel? - No, boring.

0:11:01 > 0:11:02But you know what?

0:11:02 > 0:11:05It might be turning into a better person morally.

0:11:08 > 0:11:13Good morning. We begin our Monday service with the hymn 211.

0:11:16 > 0:11:17We've only been here a short while,

0:11:17 > 0:11:19but there are so many things to get used to.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21Some things are the same as my old school,

0:11:21 > 0:11:24but often they do things Eton style, like the language.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30Beaks, Divs, EWs, Masters,

0:11:30 > 0:11:33Chambers, Messing.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36I don't know. It's kind of... It's kind of weird.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39But once you get used to it it's not really too bad.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43Most of the boys here have been to private school, but we haven't.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45We've been placed in lower sets for our first term.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47At the end of term we have exams at Eton.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49They're called Trials,

0:11:49 > 0:11:53and depending on how we do, we'll be moved up or down.

0:11:53 > 0:11:54Even though we've won scholarships,

0:11:54 > 0:11:58we've got to work really hard to prove ourselves. It's scary.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01Why is the alliance system going to be making more and more likely?

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Look at the big map, the big picture? Fara?

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Is that where most of their military bases were?

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Theo?

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Paris is in quite a central place.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12There's quite a lot of tension going on.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Yeah. And it's a British government document.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Let's go, get to your next Div.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20It's just the same, really.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22The school doesn't feel that much different,

0:12:22 > 0:12:25apart from the teaching, the boarding,

0:12:25 > 0:12:28the lessons and everything.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Come on, folks. Quickly, quickly, quickly.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33Just got into the Eton life with all these rich people.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36It's not a bad thing, it's not a good thing.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40I think cos everyone's at similar level or higher than me,

0:12:40 > 0:12:45the moment I turn off I fall back from the rest.

0:12:48 > 0:12:54It's chambers time, so I've just had some potato soup for chambers.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56And now I'm going off to my next Div.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59During Chambers, the masters have a staff meeting in Upper School -

0:12:59 > 0:13:01no playground duty for them!

0:13:01 > 0:13:04BELL DINGS

0:13:05 > 0:13:08We have up to seven lessons a day, 40 minutes long.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11And as Eton is so big, we have ten minutes to get between lessons,

0:13:11 > 0:13:14but sometimes even that's not enough.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18I could do with a car, but I can't drive.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24THEY SPEAK RUSSIAN

0:13:28 > 0:13:31- Other way. To your left.- Oh. - Your other left.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33- Oh, your left.- Your left.

0:13:33 > 0:13:34THEY SPEAK RUSSIAN

0:13:37 > 0:13:39Try not to karate chop the person next to you.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41SCHOOL BELL RINGS Ah, that'll be lunch.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Lunch is a formal affair for boys, like me, who eat in their houses.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50Whilst James and Fara head to the school canteen,

0:13:50 > 0:13:54I must assemble for 1.30 and wait for the house master to arrive

0:13:54 > 0:13:55before we start eating.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Must remember my table manners.

0:13:59 > 0:14:04You wouldn't really expect it but I've had quite continental foods.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08In the past week I've had Thai noodles, a beef curry.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10We had Mexican.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12It's not as everybody would think,

0:14:12 > 0:14:16like we have tea every single day and scones and all that.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18We just eat normal food like regular people.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Come on, James. Brisk pace.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25We have sports every other afternoon,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27which is different from our old schools.

0:14:27 > 0:14:28WHISTLE SOUNDS

0:14:28 > 0:14:30What's really cool is that we get to try loads of different sports,

0:14:30 > 0:14:32like water polo.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36It's a bit different to swimming lengths,

0:14:36 > 0:14:38but I still love it because I'm in the water.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43And I scored three goals but the film crew missed them.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45Keep up, film crew.

0:14:45 > 0:14:46I've had my wash today.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50I'm pretty happy at our water polo score,

0:14:50 > 0:14:52but doubly happy because I found out earlier

0:14:52 > 0:14:54I aced my Latin homework,

0:14:54 > 0:14:58which was surprising because I don't really like Latin.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00Every time we get a good mark for our EW,

0:15:00 > 0:15:01we get a rewarded.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03- Hi, James.- Hi.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07- These are show ups. - Good. Bit of Latin.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09- Yep.- Are you enjoying the Latin?

0:15:09 > 0:15:11- Not really. - MASTER LAUGHS

0:15:13 > 0:15:14And now it's messing -

0:15:14 > 0:15:16our fourth food break of the day.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18I'll never go hungry at Eton.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25- Sorry?- Parade Ground.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Parade Ground.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32'If you're wondering why we're sitting on the floor,

0:15:32 > 0:15:34'we just do. It's Eton style.'

0:15:36 > 0:15:39We're not together for all of our lessons, but most of them.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43In total there are 15 academic sets.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45For now, we are in the lower sets,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48but we'll move up or down depending on our results

0:15:48 > 0:15:50at the end of year trials.

0:15:50 > 0:15:51No pressure then.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54Divinity and the philosophy of religion.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00I mean I like it, but...pretty deep.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06What we want to do today

0:16:06 > 0:16:09is we want to look at the idea of the design argument

0:16:09 > 0:16:12and how the design argument works.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Come on, guys, hurry up.

0:16:14 > 0:16:15When I said "Be prompt,"

0:16:15 > 0:16:18the idea was to try and be prompt, rather than turn up late.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21So we've already got the idea that there was the big bang.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23How would you then advance through that

0:16:23 > 0:16:26towards some sort of conclusion that it was God? Fara?

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Also in the big bang, the matter couldn't have created itself.

0:16:29 > 0:16:30Theo?

0:16:30 > 0:16:34If there's one designer he's got a lot to think about

0:16:34 > 0:16:36to make everything that there is.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38Why did you arrive late?

0:16:38 > 0:16:39Oh, I don't know.

0:16:40 > 0:16:41You didn't.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Making friends has been pretty easy.

0:16:47 > 0:16:52Everybody is similar and they're not similar in the same way

0:16:52 > 0:16:54because they've all from different places,

0:16:54 > 0:16:58but we all enjoy the same things.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01I think James is more of a friend

0:17:01 > 0:17:03and Fara is more of a competitive friend,

0:17:03 > 0:17:06because when two hard-working people look at each other

0:17:06 > 0:17:08and see the other person's hard-working,

0:17:08 > 0:17:10they want to work even harder.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14SCHOOL BELL RINGS

0:17:15 > 0:17:17It's quiet hour - time to do our homework,

0:17:17 > 0:17:20and we've got divinity to hand in tomorrow.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22My divinity EW is to do some exercise,

0:17:22 > 0:17:24which I don't even know what it is.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27I haven't started it yet, I'll probably do it later or never.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31Geography - yep, doing good. History - doing good,

0:17:31 > 0:17:33Latin - rubbish.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37Well, I'm actually doing good but it's still just rubbish.

0:17:37 > 0:17:41French and Spanish are really, really hard, but I like it still.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45I'm not a thinking person, I'm not philosopher.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48I'm more logically logical.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52I like straightforward thinking.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55After long, jam packed day, we can finally chill out.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58I'm not really missing home.

0:17:58 > 0:17:59This feels like home.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01Well, that's the reason it's called a house,

0:18:01 > 0:18:04because it's where we live.

0:18:04 > 0:18:10So it's a home away from home and it's quite welcoming.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11It's a good job we're kept busy

0:18:11 > 0:18:14so we don't think about missing our mums and dad.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17I don't have a maid.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Having said that, my mum does do a lot for me.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23But making the bed is the one she's adamant that I do.

0:18:23 > 0:18:24There we go.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37The first couple of weeks of the Michaelmas term

0:18:37 > 0:18:40has been a whirlwind - we haven't stopped.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43We have 35 lessons a week, sports every other day,

0:18:43 > 0:18:46society meetings every night, including debating...

0:18:47 > 0:18:49I'm going to start with my side's rebuttal

0:18:49 > 0:18:51and then go into some key points made.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53..and bags of EW.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56I was told the average Etonian walks four miles a day.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59You have to be organised.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02At Eton every minute does matter.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04As soon as you've finished, it's on to the next thing

0:19:04 > 0:19:06and to the next thing...

0:19:06 > 0:19:08and on to the next thing.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Everybody is their own person,

0:19:10 > 0:19:15nobody fits into this certain posh category.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17Once you do work, you do your homework,

0:19:17 > 0:19:20you always have to reward yourself, because that's how you stay sane.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26I am a really fully-fledged Etonian, not really that much of a bother.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30The more I am settling in, the more I need to worry about.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36And there's one thing we all have to worry about -

0:19:36 > 0:19:40there's an unusual event we all have take part in.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Tonight we have to rehearse for the inter-house singing competition

0:19:43 > 0:19:45known as the House Shout.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47It's a massive Eton tradition and it's a fun icebreaker.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51All 25 houses take part.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53Each house performs a song in front of the headmaster

0:19:53 > 0:19:55the night before half term,

0:19:55 > 0:19:57or long leave as we call it here.

0:19:59 > 0:20:00CHEERING

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Sounds straightforward, but it's the older boys

0:20:02 > 0:20:04and not the Masters who pick the song,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07which probably explains why we're forced to sing ABBA songs!

0:20:09 > 0:20:11Personally, I think we'll come up trumps.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14We've got a decent squad. Dmitri over here - class singer.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15I'm not too bad myself

0:20:15 > 0:20:17ALL: # Oh, yeah

0:20:17 > 0:20:19# You can dance... #

0:20:19 > 0:20:23Good job's there's still a whole week of practice before the final.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25We need it.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27ALL: # Time goes by

0:20:27 > 0:20:29# So slowly

0:20:29 > 0:20:31# Time goes by

0:20:31 > 0:20:32# So slowly

0:20:32 > 0:20:35# Time goes by

0:20:35 > 0:20:37# So slowly... #

0:20:37 > 0:20:39# Best of both worlds

0:20:39 > 0:20:41# Chillin' out, take it slow

0:20:41 > 0:20:43# Then you rock out the show

0:20:43 > 0:20:47# You get the best of both worlds... #

0:20:47 > 0:20:49I think that might need a bit of work,

0:20:49 > 0:20:51but, you know, we get there.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Whilst we're rehearsing for the house shout,

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Mr Stewart's working hard marking our EW to hand back tomorrow.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59James, If I give yours back first,

0:20:59 > 0:21:00one thing I would say

0:21:00 > 0:21:03is this is much, much better than your last couple of EWs,

0:21:03 > 0:21:07so you got a good mark there out of 20, 16,

0:21:07 > 0:21:08that's really encouraging.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11Fara, this is excellent.

0:21:13 > 0:21:1515. What did James...?

0:21:15 > 0:21:16James beat me.

0:21:17 > 0:21:18James beat me.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21He's beaten me in French and divinity now.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23Yes, 18!

0:21:23 > 0:21:26'We might be good friends, but we're competitive too.'

0:21:32 > 0:21:37Everyone here's expected to get like 5 A stars.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39This is definitely...

0:21:39 > 0:21:41The standard here is a lot higher.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43The majority of my life, for five more years,

0:21:43 > 0:21:44is going to spent here.

0:21:46 > 0:21:47It's quite weird.

0:21:53 > 0:21:54And as I've got five years of this,

0:21:54 > 0:21:57I need to improve on my punctuality

0:21:57 > 0:21:59as I've been put on tardy book -

0:21:59 > 0:22:01punishment for being late to lessons.

0:22:04 > 0:22:05But I'm not the only one.

0:22:08 > 0:22:09So this is what happens.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13Basically if you're late for something, then you have to...

0:22:13 > 0:22:14Either late or be bad,

0:22:14 > 0:22:17you have to go to school office three times.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19I had to get up about 20 minutes earlier than usual,

0:22:19 > 0:22:22so I have to be in full dress by half seven.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25I'll wake up in a minute.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28But, you know, like those first ten minutes after you get out of bed

0:22:28 > 0:22:30and you're just, like... You don't want to get up.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32But then once you make those ten minutes you're fine.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35- How many minutes were you late? - Eh, one.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37- And for what? - Maths.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43Right, young man. I think we're going to have words.

0:22:43 > 0:22:44What have you not got on?

0:22:45 > 0:22:47Oh, I haven't got my collar on.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49You haven't got your collar on, you haven't got your stud on,

0:22:49 > 0:22:51you haven't got your tie on.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53So you know what that means, go back and try again.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58I didn't think he'd do that in front of the camera.

0:22:58 > 0:22:59- Morning, Sir. - Morning.

0:22:59 > 0:23:003491.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02- 3491.- Yep.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04- Thank you very much. Thank you. - Thank you.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09You have to go to Tardy with the full dress,

0:23:09 > 0:23:14so when you forgot things you get sent back and try again.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26I'm not actually organised myself my dad organises everything for me.

0:23:27 > 0:23:31Right that's better now, isn't it? Thank you.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34I'm glad Tardy book's over because it was hard getting up on time.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38Today's pretty important and a bit scary,

0:23:38 > 0:23:41as Fara, James and I are meeting with the Head Master.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46We definitely can't be late for this.

0:23:51 > 0:23:52Welcome, come in.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55One of the things that I really like about this place,

0:23:55 > 0:23:57it's been around a long time, almost 600 years,

0:23:57 > 0:23:59is there's been all kinds of boys

0:23:59 > 0:24:02who have gone on to do remarkable things in later life.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03So go on, let's put you on the spot.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06What's been the single best thing so far?

0:24:06 > 0:24:08Beating Hampton 5-2.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10I don't really know. The breakfast is really nice.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13So what's been the worst thing or the toughest thing?

0:24:13 > 0:24:14Walking around.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Too much walking, we're keeping you trim.

0:24:18 > 0:24:19Let's talk about ambitions.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22If we think about you at the end of this year,

0:24:22 > 0:24:25your first year at Eton, and imagine you looking back,

0:24:25 > 0:24:28what will you hoped to have achieved, do you think?

0:24:28 > 0:24:30One of things that I really want to do,

0:24:30 > 0:24:33non-academically, is to try everything really.

0:24:33 > 0:24:38Because I'm definitely not good at football or rugby

0:24:38 > 0:24:39or many other sports.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41It doesn't matter if you're not good at it.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43One of the lines in my old school song was,

0:24:43 > 0:24:45"Sentiment is more than skill."

0:24:45 > 0:24:47So if you try things that you're not good at,

0:24:47 > 0:24:50it builds your character.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52One of things we need to get good at is Latin, we're having

0:24:52 > 0:24:56Extra Latin classes cos we weren't taught it at our old schools.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59Yeah, he's quite late. He's late.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03But he's remembered, which is good.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06Lovely to see you. Better late than never. Come on.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09I've got to admit, I am struggling with organising my day,

0:25:09 > 0:25:11but not my wardrobe.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13We can wear what we want to extra Latin

0:25:13 > 0:25:15because it's outside of normal divs.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17Theo and I have been grouped together as

0:25:17 > 0:25:18we are doing quite well,

0:25:18 > 0:25:21but James still has some catching up to do.

0:25:21 > 0:25:25I was talking with Miss Alitt at the end of last session

0:25:25 > 0:25:28and, basically, we both agreed that you are quite capable

0:25:28 > 0:25:33of doing really well in this subject if you sit down and learn it.

0:25:35 > 0:25:36It's quite interesting, I suppose,

0:25:36 > 0:25:40but maybe not the best, like, very fun subject.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44It's the night before we break up for half term

0:25:44 > 0:25:48and the final of the house shout. This is what happened.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51ALL: # Every little thing that you say or do

0:25:51 > 0:25:53# I'm hung up

0:25:53 > 0:25:55# I'm hung up on you... #

0:25:55 > 0:25:57# You can dance

0:25:57 > 0:25:59# You can jive

0:25:59 > 0:26:02# Having the time of your life... #

0:26:02 > 0:26:06# You have the best of both worlds

0:26:06 > 0:26:08# Mix it all together

0:26:08 > 0:26:10# Oh, yeah

0:26:10 > 0:26:11# It's so much better

0:26:11 > 0:26:14# Cos you know that it's the best of both worlds

0:26:14 > 0:26:16# Ah. #

0:26:20 > 0:26:21We don't hang around after we've sung

0:26:21 > 0:26:26because the school hall not big enough for 1,300 boys

0:26:26 > 0:26:29So we head back to the house and wait for the results.

0:26:32 > 0:26:36As predicted, Fara's Dancing Queen beat 24 other songs,

0:26:36 > 0:26:37winning this year's House Shout!

0:26:37 > 0:26:39CHEERING

0:26:39 > 0:26:41We won house shout, it's pretty great!

0:26:44 > 0:26:47That's it - end of the first half of Michaelmas.

0:26:47 > 0:26:48Nine days off.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53So I actually need nine pairs of pants.

0:26:53 > 0:26:54- Is that everything? - Yeah.

0:26:56 > 0:26:57I've only got eight.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02I'm going to have to wear one pair two nights in a row.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05I'm looking forward to not walking as much.

0:27:05 > 0:27:10I feel like I'm an Etonian now, not just someone learning how to be.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14Ah, it really stinks.

0:27:17 > 0:27:18- Have a good time in China. - Thanks, man.

0:27:22 > 0:27:23See you. Good long leave.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29Next time, our new life at Eton continues.

0:27:29 > 0:27:31SCREAMING

0:27:31 > 0:27:33We'll be having fun - Eton style.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35I think it might be twins.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38But the game is changing and things are get serious.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41We've got big exams at the end of term.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43Will the pressure get too much?

0:27:43 > 0:27:45Nervous. Very nervous.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47Or will we become fully fledged Etonians?
