0:00:24 > 0:00:27MUSIC: Work by The Saturdays

0:00:32 > 0:00:35My name is Lauren and I'm 14 years old.

0:00:35 > 0:00:40This is me getting ready for the biggest competition of my life.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44Like millions of people around the world, I love Irish dancing.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49I have been competing in Irish dance competitions

0:00:49 > 0:00:51since I was a little girl.

0:00:51 > 0:00:52Before I went side stage,

0:00:52 > 0:00:56I said, "Oh, my gosh, Mum, I'm going to get a big crown."

0:00:56 > 0:00:59In two weeks, I'm going to Montreal, Canada,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02for the world championships, the Olympics of Irish dancing.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08Every Irish dancer dreams of being a world champion, including me.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19I started dancing when I was three years old.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21When my sister started dancing,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24I was bobbing around the feises and the competitions

0:01:24 > 0:01:27and I couldn't wait to get into it.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29You're going to have to make sure you stretch

0:01:29 > 0:01:30and you warm up properly first.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Kelsey and I, we have a brilliant relationship.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36She helps me prefect all my steps in our studio.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38These are my heavy shoes.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42The tip is for trebling and doing my rhythm,

0:01:42 > 0:01:46and this is where I get all my beats and my sounds.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49The heel, it has a bubble here,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52it makes you able to do your clicks.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02I think your family is the most important thing to you

0:02:02 > 0:02:04out of everything, even dancing.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06I'm so lucky to have a family

0:02:06 > 0:02:09who really supports me in my Irish dancing,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11because a lot of children don't have that.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14It's brilliant to have their support right beside me

0:02:14 > 0:02:15every step of the way.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19They're preparing themselves for weeks coming up to the competition,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22so it's up to the parents to help them to do that as well.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Make sure they have everything they need.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27That's why they call us dancing mams and dancing dads.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29That's what we are, yeah.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32We train, we eat and we do everything

0:02:32 > 0:02:33like a normal athlete would do -

0:02:33 > 0:02:37if you were a runner or played football or anything.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38It really is a sport,

0:02:38 > 0:02:42it might be even more intense than football or anything like that.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49When you're side stage, you feel really nervous.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53You just try and calm your nerves, but when you're on stage,

0:02:53 > 0:02:57that's when it really hits you, like, "Oh, my gosh",

0:02:57 > 0:03:00especially in a big competition. You're on the stage and you're like,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02"Wow, I just have to go out and give it my all."

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Sometimes you can actually feel your heart beat in your mouth.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08It's brilliant when you win.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Every girl wants to win a big crown.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14They're really delicate, so they are.

0:03:15 > 0:03:20I've been working for so many years just to win the world championships

0:03:20 > 0:03:23just to get that feeling and just to actually say to yourself,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25"Wow, I'm a world champion."

0:03:25 > 0:03:29It would just mean the world to me.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I couldn't imagine any better feeling in my whole entire life

0:03:32 > 0:03:33than winning the worlds.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36I feel ready for the worlds coming up this year.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38I kind of want to get to that stage where I'm over there

0:03:38 > 0:03:41and I'm practising.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43I'm really excited this year.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46I need to be really focused and mentally prepared,

0:03:46 > 0:03:48but I think I'm getting there.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51My main rival at the worlds this year would be Orla.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54She is the reigning world champion.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58I haven't seen her many times this year.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01I only really know what she's going to be dancing like

0:04:01 > 0:04:02when I see her at the worlds.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05So that's a bit nerve-racking, not knowing.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08She is the same age as me and she lives in Chicago in America.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27My name's Orla and I'm 14 years old.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29I've been Irish dancing since I was three,

0:04:29 > 0:04:32and last year I became a world champion.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34It's an amazing feeling because to give up

0:04:34 > 0:04:37so much to dedicate yourself to Irish dancing,

0:04:37 > 0:04:42and you know that you won and all your hard work actually paid off.

0:04:47 > 0:04:48Since my mom is my dance teacher,

0:04:48 > 0:04:51I get to spend the whole day with her.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Just because you won the title doesn't mean

0:04:55 > 0:04:57you no longer have to do all the hard work.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59No, it's still off to the side.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02You do have to do the hard work and she puts the time in

0:05:02 > 0:05:04because of that.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Yeah, that was much neater and tidier.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17I probably practise every single day for like two to three hours.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25Gary is a strict teacher,

0:05:25 > 0:05:29but he needs to be strict so that he gets us to work hard,

0:05:29 > 0:05:31I don't think Gary knows,

0:05:31 > 0:05:33but we sometimes we call him Scary Gary.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34Smile!

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Relax the face, just smile.

0:05:37 > 0:05:38Just smile normally.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Gary is also a world champion,

0:05:44 > 0:05:49so he obviously knows what it takes to win.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53It's kind of hard because there is so much school work

0:05:53 > 0:05:55and I need to keep up my grades and stuff,

0:05:55 > 0:05:59but I also have to work really hard for the competition

0:05:59 > 0:06:01because it's, like, so close.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07All the work is done.

0:06:07 > 0:06:08I just want you in...

0:06:10 > 0:06:13..dance it, and sell yourselves.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Nobody is going looking for you.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Eyes up, shoulders back, and sell it.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20Get a drink and straight back in.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22What did you think about the class tonight?

0:06:22 > 0:06:24I thought drills were really, really hard today.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Yeah, those were pretty tough.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30I couldn't breathe.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35My Irish dancing school is in Belfast,

0:06:35 > 0:06:3875 miles away from where I live Drogheda, Ireland.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46I go to dance class four or five times a week after school.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49It's a really long drive for my mum.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Mum loved Irish dancing when she was a little girl,

0:06:52 > 0:06:54but she never got the chance to compete

0:06:54 > 0:06:57in the world championship like me.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00I'd love to win the world title for mum

0:07:00 > 0:07:02to thank her for everything she has done for me.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13Gerard has been my teacher for about five years.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15One, two, three, and go.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Gerard has been a world champion five times.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24He is an absolutely amazing dancer.

0:07:24 > 0:07:25Shoulders crossed.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Sometimes he can be a bit harsh and tough.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Feet off the ground... Stop! Stop. Arms don't be wobbling.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Do you think that was clear?

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Do you think that was loud enough?

0:07:39 > 0:07:40No. Back again.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42It's a really tough class today,

0:07:42 > 0:07:45but I guess we all have to push through it.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Use that back foot.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48Louder.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51I'm going to be grateful for it at the worlds,

0:07:51 > 0:07:52for him picking on me,

0:07:52 > 0:07:55because then it will make me dance better on the day.

0:07:56 > 0:07:57Did you miss a click there?

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Stomp it out and lift right up

0:08:00 > 0:08:04and show me your feet da, da, da. Da-de-da-de, dum-dum-dum...

0:08:04 > 0:08:06I'm not happy with those front clicks.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08Louder, louder.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15After the class I have to go to get my dress fitted on again,

0:08:15 > 0:08:17because I had to get a few alterations done to it.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21I just need to make sure that it is fitting me correctly,

0:08:21 > 0:08:24so when I go on to the stage at the worlds it's just perfect.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30This is my lucky dress, I won the All Irelands in this dress,

0:08:30 > 0:08:32so I just love it.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35I love all the flowers and I love the colour.

0:08:35 > 0:08:36I just love yellow.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39It's quite plain in the centre,

0:08:39 > 0:08:42but Lauren likes a lot of bling on the dress,

0:08:42 > 0:08:45so it's got a lot of Swarovski crystals on the bodice.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48It's her kind of personality - it's bright and vibrant.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51I love it. It's definitely Lauren.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53It's her lucky dress as well.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05There is only a week to go until the world championships,

0:09:05 > 0:09:07so everyone is practising really hard.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10And, like me, Orla is busy at school too.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29- It's awkward. - No, it's not.- No, it's not.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33If I was champion, I'd be like, "I'm world champion, no big deal."

0:09:33 > 0:09:35How much do you want to win worlds?

0:09:35 > 0:09:39It doesn't really matter as long as I dance good, I guess.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Who's, like, your biggest competition?

0:12:58 > 0:12:59I don't know.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01I think it's important that your able

0:13:01 > 0:13:02to admit those things to yourself.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04That you're able to literally say out loud

0:13:04 > 0:13:06that "I have amazing timing"

0:13:06 > 0:13:07that "I'm very athletic".

0:13:07 > 0:13:10From what I watched, I mean, turning out your feet,

0:13:10 > 0:13:12I wish mine were as turned out as yours.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28My family and friends are like, "Dude, you're crazy."

0:16:28 > 0:16:32This is not normal in Mexico, but they are very proud of me.

0:16:35 > 0:16:40I met all of my dancing friends that I haven't seen in a while.

0:16:40 > 0:16:41- Hi.- Hi, Sophie.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46So the practice room is OK?

0:16:46 > 0:16:49Yeah, it's good enough. It's really crowded.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51Yeah, I'd say so.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53No, guys, this is too packed.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Maybe if we just start to get ready on the carpet.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04When I was coming over to see my dress for the first time,

0:17:04 > 0:17:07I wasn't nervous or anything. I was just really excited.

0:17:07 > 0:17:11I don't know what it was going to look like or any of the colours.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18So I have it.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Do you want to see it?

0:17:20 > 0:17:22- Do you know what colour it is? - No.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24This is why it cost so much.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26Just take a look at the stones.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31Oh, my heavens.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34And a little bit of pink.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42We had a slight problem, though.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44- It doesn't zip?- No. - OK, you pull it.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53Yeah, it's totally fixable.

0:17:53 > 0:17:54You love?

0:17:54 > 0:17:56Bring it tomorrow when we practise

0:17:56 > 0:17:58and we'll just put it on just to run through

0:17:58 > 0:17:59and make sure you feel OK.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08One, two, three, and go.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10GERARD VOCALISES RHYTHM

0:18:14 > 0:18:16No. Your feet.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19I've told you that before - I want your feet out.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21And where is the sound of the click?

0:18:21 > 0:18:25Go and practise that. No, no, no.

0:18:25 > 0:18:29I'm a little bit nervous, but I think that's normal.

0:18:29 > 0:18:35I think tomorrow that I shouldn't have any fear or doubts about myself

0:18:35 > 0:18:40because I do think I'm dancing well and I feel confident in myself

0:18:40 > 0:18:43and at the end of the day, I just have to get up there

0:18:43 > 0:18:45and dance my very best.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49So we managed to fix the dress, we just pulled the darts out.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52Does it feel too tight? Are you sure?

0:18:52 > 0:18:54One, two, three, and smile.

0:18:54 > 0:18:55HE VOCALISES RHYTHM

0:18:57 > 0:18:59Tongue in your mouth.

0:18:59 > 0:19:00And pull.

0:19:00 > 0:19:01HE VOCALISES RHYTHM

0:19:01 > 0:19:03Feel OK? It's not pinching anywhere?

0:19:03 > 0:19:06No pressure tomorrow.

0:19:06 > 0:19:07Just have fun, OK?

0:19:09 > 0:19:12It's quite hard to go to sleep

0:19:12 > 0:19:15straight away, but say to my brain,

0:19:15 > 0:19:17I just say, "Go to sleep now.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20"You don't want to be tired in the morning", so that helps.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33After months and months of waiting,

0:19:33 > 0:19:35the big day has finally arrived.

0:19:35 > 0:19:39How we look is a big part of Irish dancing.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41You have to make sure the judges notice you

0:19:41 > 0:19:43when you're on stage.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54We all have an early start to get our wigs and make-up done.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58It might look over the top,

0:19:58 > 0:20:01but our make-up is our war paint - it gets us ready for battle.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05I still can't believe that today

0:20:05 > 0:20:07I'm dancing in the world championships.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09It doesn't really feel like it yet,

0:20:09 > 0:20:12but I'll say it will kick in when I'm side stage.

0:20:19 > 0:20:23You want those judges to be like "Oh, my God - that's the winner.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25"That is the world champion standing on that there stage,

0:20:25 > 0:20:27"we have to give it to her."
