0:00:19 > 0:00:22How much do I want to become a professional show jumper?

0:00:22 > 0:00:25The word is not even in any dictionary in the world.

0:00:25 > 0:00:29I don't think the word is even on earth yet.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30It's that much.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Go! One, two, go. Good boy!

0:00:35 > 0:00:38One, two, jump. Go on, lad.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Kai, you had air time!

0:00:40 > 0:00:43When I'm riding towards that jump, it's exhilarating.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46- Anything can happen. - Two, three, go, Kai.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53It's the summer holidays and these are my mates.

0:00:53 > 0:00:57Iniko, Josh and Malachi.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59We met back in primary school, but there is one important

0:00:59 > 0:01:02difference between these guys and me.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04When the summer ends, they'll all go back to school,

0:01:04 > 0:01:08but I won't because I have been excluded.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11School, for me, wasn't fun.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13You could see he was challenged.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15He would get distracted sometimes in class.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18I was a lot more hyper than everyone else, I was a lot more fidgety,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20I didn't want to be ever sat down, I always wanted to move.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23He would learn by doing things, not by sitting down and listen.

0:01:23 > 0:01:29I have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - or ADHD.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Basically, my brain operates much faster than normal.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35I have loads of energy and my mind gets easily distracted.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38It's a behavioural condition that you are born with

0:01:38 > 0:01:39and there isn't a cure.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42You could see sometimes a teacher would get frustrated

0:01:42 > 0:01:43and they'd be like, "Ohhh!"

0:01:43 > 0:01:45When teachers singled me out,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48it wasn't nice. I'd get quite annoyed and get quite upset

0:01:48 > 0:01:50and I'd come home crying.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53I think he's quite a bright, energetic person

0:01:53 > 0:01:56who, in primary school, was greatly misunderstood.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Go, go, go! One, two, go!

0:01:59 > 0:02:03Good boy. Keep that canter nice and forward.

0:02:05 > 0:02:06HORSE WHINNIES

0:02:06 > 0:02:10These are my stables that I come to on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14This is Jake, my favourite horse. Hello!

0:02:14 > 0:02:18He's very nice and calm and he'll mess about at times, when he can!

0:02:18 > 0:02:22- Good lad.- And these are my riding instructors, Sarah and Connor.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Most of my time at the stables is actually spent working hard,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27which I really enjoy.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29The yard needs sweeping,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32the horses have to be fed, there's always mucking out to do

0:02:32 > 0:02:35and I tack up the horses so they are ready to ride.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39If there's a job that wants doing, he wants to do it.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41If Kai had a choice, he wouldn't leave this yard -

0:02:41 > 0:02:42he'd sleep here if he could.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45He's a grafter, which is what we like.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47My favourite job on the yard is spending time with the horses

0:02:47 > 0:02:49and grooming them.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53He is desperate to learn and that's something you can't teach anybody.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57You use the body brush to get rid of the oil out of the coat,

0:02:57 > 0:02:59so you do that down the whole body.

0:02:59 > 0:03:04Now you will use the dandy-brush. It gets rid of mud. Brush down.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Then mane and tail comb.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10And then you come to the front. Softly do it,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13because you don't want to do that and hit their face

0:03:13 > 0:03:15and the horse gets scared, so you just do that.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20I do like looking after the horses and taking that responsibility

0:03:20 > 0:03:22because I can be treated like an adult.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25I can look after something that's this big.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28I feel like someone can actually put their trust in me,

0:03:28 > 0:03:30so I can actually do that.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34I didn't know that he had ADHD. When he's around the horses,

0:03:34 > 0:03:36he's nice and calm and collected.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Never have thought that he had ADHD.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42What people don't realise is that when they first ever see me,

0:03:42 > 0:03:45if they don't see me on a horse,

0:03:45 > 0:03:47they don't see how calm I can be.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50I feel calm because I know that nothing is going to judge me

0:03:50 > 0:03:51and hurt me.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55Humans, they always have, like, a reason to judge people.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01In between the world and the stables, there definitely feels like

0:04:01 > 0:04:05there's a vortex where I pass through it and the worry -

0:04:05 > 0:04:08everything, all my feelings - just goes.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10We can leave now, we don't need to be here.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17Horses are very giving animals, they give us their trust

0:04:17 > 0:04:20and their loyalty.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23Horses respond to people and people respond to horses.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33In four weeks' time, I've got my first ever show jumping competition,

0:04:33 > 0:04:35right here at my local stables.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37I'll be riding this horse - Gypsy.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41This is a big deal, so this summer we both need to train hard.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Give him a good old belly kick and say, "Come on!"

0:04:43 > 0:04:46There you go. Good. Now, sit up, hands forward. Good.

0:04:46 > 0:04:47Good, good, good.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Look at your green fence, keep your canter. Go on! Push him on!

0:04:50 > 0:04:54I have no doubt at all that he could become a really good rider.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Good lad! Now sit up, ride over to B!

0:04:56 > 0:04:59The progression so far is just unbelievable.

0:04:59 > 0:05:05One, two, three! There we go, much better! Good boy!

0:05:05 > 0:05:08Give him a pat. Well done, that was nice! That was very nice.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12My biggest supporter is my mum, who comes to watch me ride every week.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14I'm really proud of him when I see him.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18He's at his best, he's happy and he's focusing.

0:05:18 > 0:05:23Children with ADHD function better in motion.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25I'm quite nervous about the competition coming up.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28It'll be totally new experience for me.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30I've never actually had a lot of people watching me.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Normally, it's just my mum.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Never, like, a whole neighbourhood or community.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37It's going to be good to watch.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39How are you, boo-boo?

0:05:40 > 0:05:43So you're the horse I'll be riding for the competition, eh, Gyps?

0:05:43 > 0:05:44Start bonding.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Have you drunk any water recently?

0:05:53 > 0:05:57I've liked horses since I was about two and a half.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01I have horses everywhere around my room.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06My mates, they have said it's quite girly. They do tease me about it

0:06:06 > 0:06:09at times. But I don't really let that faze me,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12because I'm not going to stop doing what I love to do

0:06:12 > 0:06:13just to fit in with them.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16I'm going to do what I want.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19These are some of Britain's top show jumpers and I've come to see them

0:06:19 > 0:06:23in action at this year's British Show Jumping Championships.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30How much do I want to become a professional show jumper?

0:06:30 > 0:06:33The word is not even in any dictionary in the world.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38I don't think the word is even on earth yet.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41This is definitely the dream I want.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44When people clap you and cheer,

0:06:44 > 0:06:47it's having that feeling of the exhilaration.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51He's clear there - Vic Douglas.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Show jumping is an elimination sport.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56To stand a chance of a rosette, you must first qualify for the finals

0:06:56 > 0:07:00by getting what is called a clear round.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03If you knock down any poles, if your horse refuses to jump

0:07:03 > 0:07:07or if you fall off, you could be immediately out.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Once through to the finals, the one with the fastest time

0:07:10 > 0:07:12and the least mistakes wins.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16And look how high these professional jumps are! They're massive!

0:07:16 > 0:07:20One of the best and most famous riders here is this man -

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Tim Stockdale.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25He has represented Britain at world show jumping competitions

0:07:25 > 0:07:27more than 50 times.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30He is a legend and one of my idols.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32So I'm very excited because Tim Stockdale has agreed to give me a

0:07:32 > 0:07:35lesson in course walking ahead of my own competition

0:07:35 > 0:07:37in three weeks' time.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41OK, what we do is we allow four of our strides to be one horse stride,

0:07:41 > 0:07:45OK? But we also allow half a stride for take-off,

0:07:45 > 0:07:47half a stride for landing.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50So that's one, two, and that's where he is going to land.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54So, look - one, two, three - one stride.

0:07:54 > 0:07:59One, two, three - two strides. And then one, two.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Basically, the order and the layout of the jumps are kept a secret from

0:08:02 > 0:08:05the riders until just a few minutes before the competition starts.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09Then all the riders are given one chance to walk around the course

0:08:09 > 0:08:11and remember as much as they can.

0:08:11 > 0:08:12You can see number six there, look.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Just keep your eye on it, keep some canter through the corner.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Three is the triple bar.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21Two. One, two, three. Yeah.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Last fence coming up. You walk it and tell me how many it is

0:08:24 > 0:08:26and I'll meet you at the other end.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29(One, two. One, two, three, four.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33(One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38(One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40(One, two, three, four.)

0:08:41 > 0:08:44- That's six!- Good lad, perfect.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47Lovely, six strides to the end. Yeah, perfect.

0:08:47 > 0:08:51One, two, three - five strides - four. Five - the bar.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55Six - the combination. One, sit up. Seven, the water. Eight, long four.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00- Nine, ten, 11. Four strides - 12. Six strides - 13.- Yeah.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02That's how you walk a course!

0:09:02 > 0:09:06- Always being prepared for where you are going. Got it?- Yeah.

0:09:06 > 0:09:07Well done, boy. Well done!

0:09:07 > 0:09:11- ANNOUNCER:- There is the under-16 champion of Great Britain.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13It feels like there are a lot of people here.

0:09:13 > 0:09:18If you determine them from me, there would be quite a bit of difference.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20When you come to competitions,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23you do see more white people than you do black.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25People sometimes do stare at you and think things,

0:09:25 > 0:09:28but I don't really care what they think.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32I'm here and I'm just going to enjoy myself watching something

0:09:32 > 0:09:34I want to become.

0:09:34 > 0:09:35Because horses cost so much money,

0:09:35 > 0:09:38this is a very difficult world to get into.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40I'm not from a wealthy background at all.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42But I do have lots of determination.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45Tim Stockdale didn't come from a horsey background,

0:09:45 > 0:09:47I haven't come from a horsey background.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51I'm trying to get into this world, so if he can, I can.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53As long as you put the determination and the passion in,

0:09:53 > 0:09:55you can make it anywhere.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58I am going to carry on until I get to this sort of level.

0:09:58 > 0:09:59Nothing can stop it.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03One, two, three, four - leg up.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06One, two - up. Good lad.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08To help me become a professional show jumper,

0:10:08 > 0:10:11my riding lessons, that my mum struggles to afford,

0:10:11 > 0:10:13are paid for by a charitable foundation

0:10:13 > 0:10:16and I am very, very grateful.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20Now, push. Push. One, two, go. Go!

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Oh, that was beautiful. Do it again.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25The charity is like an island. It's like I've got

0:10:25 > 0:10:29a puncture in my boat and the water just keeps filling and I'm sinking,

0:10:29 > 0:10:32but there is an island underneath me that's keeping me afloat

0:10:32 > 0:10:34and keeping me arisen.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38If that island did disappear, it wouldn't be good.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42And this guy is my island.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45He's international Olympic dressage rider Emile Faurie.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50Today, I'm at his yard for the very first time.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52- And I hear you want to be a show jumper?- Yeah.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56I think I might have to convert you into being a dressage rider.

0:10:56 > 0:11:00He is the world's top dressage rider, so...

0:11:00 > 0:11:02it's not even on a percentage scale just meeting him.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05It was just awesome.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07This is at the moment my top horse.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Come on, don't be scared.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13She's one of those horses I totally fell in love with

0:11:13 > 0:11:16when I very first met her.

0:11:16 > 0:11:17Very sleek.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25I've never been this close to a top quality horse,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28so it's a very special moment.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32So why do you help kids like me?

0:11:32 > 0:11:35Horse riding, for me as a child, was my saviour

0:11:35 > 0:11:38and was the one thing that I felt that I could do and not be judged.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42I sort of thought, well, maybe if I can give just even one person

0:11:42 > 0:11:46the opportunity to have the same experience, then why not?

0:11:46 > 0:11:51So I really ask him to start powering a little bit in his trot.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55You can even hear in his breathing, you know it's hard work.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00And that's when he throws his legs out a little bit higher and then

0:12:00 > 0:12:05he should be able to come back quite quickly to a more collected trot.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10I think I may have changed my mind now about dressage.

0:12:10 > 0:12:11THEY LAUGH

0:12:11 > 0:12:13That's what I like to hear!

0:12:23 > 0:12:26Have a little walk around.

0:12:26 > 0:12:31- And there you're sitting on £385,000.- Wow!

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Why don't you try and do a few sideways steps now?

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Put your right leg back and keep the left rein. That's it.

0:12:37 > 0:12:38That's it.

0:12:40 > 0:12:41Good, well done.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45Spot on!

0:12:47 > 0:12:50I thought, well, I don't really want to do dressage

0:12:50 > 0:12:53cos it's a very slow sport, it's a lot of concentration.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57But now, seeing this, thinking about it more,

0:12:57 > 0:13:00if I've got that concentration...

0:13:00 > 0:13:02if I want to do something else when I'm older,

0:13:02 > 0:13:05I've already had that concentration, so it should be a lot easier to do,

0:13:05 > 0:13:06especially with ADHD.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Do you think you need a lot of money to get to the top?

0:13:09 > 0:13:13It is a sport where horses do cost a lot of money,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16but my parents couldn't even afford to send me for riding lessons -

0:13:16 > 0:13:18we had no money.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22Everything that you can't control, flush it down the loo,

0:13:22 > 0:13:23don't give it the time of day.

0:13:23 > 0:13:27Focus on becoming as good a rider as you possibly can

0:13:27 > 0:13:30and focus on the positive things towards your career.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33With this sport, what I've learnt to do is just to go for it.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36Even if you don't get there, at least you tried

0:13:36 > 0:13:39and you didn't give up and you're going to go for it.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42It's two weeks until my competition.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Today, I'm jumping Gypsy out in the big field

0:13:44 > 0:13:47and out here it is really, really fun.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Then have a canter back! Put your leg on!

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Light seat, hover! Go! Leg on!

0:13:53 > 0:13:56When you are on the back of that horse - walking, trotting,

0:13:56 > 0:14:02galloping, cantering round - that feeling is really, really good.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04It's exhilarating.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Think about your line, Kai, little telegraph pole.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09When I'm riding towards that jump,

0:14:09 > 0:14:13the adrenaline does start pumping and you think anything can happen.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15Go, Kai!

0:14:18 > 0:14:20You OK? Yeah?

0:14:20 > 0:14:22Yeah.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26Now, all that happened there is Gypsy went to go on a long one.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29You was a little too much here. OK?

0:14:29 > 0:14:33I've seen him tumbling for nearly 14 years,

0:14:33 > 0:14:34so it's kind of...

0:14:34 > 0:14:37it's just Kai.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Absolutely, he'll be all right.

0:14:40 > 0:14:44He just knocked himself a little bit. That looks fine.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47Come on, let's get back on.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53What did I say, not too quick? Cross-country for you.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58That's actually a very graceful dismount, Kai, I must admit.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02Thankfully, we're both OK and now you can see why riders wear

0:15:02 > 0:15:04body protection and riding hats.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06OK, it looks terrifying because of all the bushes

0:15:06 > 0:15:10and the forest around it, but it's not actually that scary.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12Yeah, over you go.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20Don't take your eye off this fence - look.

0:15:20 > 0:15:24Look. Check your line out, sit up.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27Two, three. Good lad!

0:15:27 > 0:15:31Much better. Give him a pat, let him have a breather.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34I'm going to give you a shower later.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37I'm going to give you a good old little bath.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50Being a good show jumper isn't just about riding well.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53It's also about how you and your horse trust in each other.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57I want to learn to think like a horse,

0:15:57 > 0:16:00so I'm spending the afternoon with my friend Paddy Gracey.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03OK, I'm going to bring her back to a trot. And trot.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06He's a special kind of horse trainer who helps difficult horses

0:16:06 > 0:16:10like Phoebe to learn to work with humans, not against them.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12OK, I'm going to ask her to come and meet me.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22So wherever I go, she comes with me.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24With no lines attached.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28So that's pure trust. This way.

0:16:28 > 0:16:33And if I stop... Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35..she will stop.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37I'm not going to hurt her in any way.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40Most people, when a horse has a behaviour problem, yeah,

0:16:40 > 0:16:44- they resort to the whip.- Yeah. - They say, you will do it.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47You will go into the horsebox, if you don't, I'll whip you.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50And yet today, I've not even seen a whip today.

0:16:50 > 0:16:55I would rather get the horse to want to do that through trust,

0:16:55 > 0:16:57rather than through violence.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59- A little kiss and a little... - HE MAKES KISSING NOISE

0:16:59 > 0:17:02..is a good tool to... That's it. ..to make them go forward.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Well done, lad. I think you've done this before.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07And let's see can you get her just with the softest of your hands,

0:17:07 > 0:17:11a little, mwah, mwah, and a nice trot.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14This horse is on a level with me.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18When I was in school, the teachers, they tried to control my behaviour.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22They tried to fight me, which didn't work.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25I fought back. Cos if they were calm and relaxed, I would have been

0:17:25 > 0:17:28calm and relaxed instead of always being on the edge.

0:17:28 > 0:17:29Little wiggle.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31Paddy is not using fire with fire

0:17:31 > 0:17:33and try and be angrier than the horse,

0:17:33 > 0:17:37he's cooling it down with water, with calmness and kindness

0:17:37 > 0:17:39and relaxation.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41No, look at that. Can you see that?

0:17:41 > 0:17:46And that was by being really soft. This is what this mare needs, yeah?

0:17:46 > 0:17:49Then she realises human beings ain't so bad after all.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52Well done.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56Being told that I couldn't go back to school was devastating.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59But, again, instead of always holding yourself back

0:17:59 > 0:18:02and being upset, you may as well just start doing things and

0:18:02 > 0:18:05pushing forward instead of holding yourself back.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09Don't condemn kids with ADHD.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12That's all I got to say.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16Just because they are different to everyone else

0:18:16 > 0:18:20doesn't mean that they can't do things like everyone else.

0:18:20 > 0:18:24So for instance, I want to become a show jumper.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27People have said to me before, that's not going to happen.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29You've got ADHD, that's not going to happen - you're going to be

0:18:29 > 0:18:33too hyper. No! When I'm around horses, I'm completely calm.

0:18:33 > 0:18:37That's what calms me down and let's my spirit run

0:18:37 > 0:18:40and not be scared.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42My name is Kai, this is my video diary

0:18:42 > 0:18:44and that's my explanation about ADHD.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47It's nearing the end of the summer and there are just a few days left

0:18:47 > 0:18:49to prepare for my competition.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51One, two, three.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54One, two, go! Good lad, yes!

0:18:54 > 0:18:57Push! Push!

0:18:57 > 0:18:58Go! Go!

0:18:58 > 0:19:01One, two, jump! Good lad!

0:19:01 > 0:19:06Kai, you had airtime! Everything was off the floor, you were in the air.

0:19:06 > 0:19:10You flew for about two seconds of your life then on a horse.

0:19:10 > 0:19:12Yeah, I'll be very, very happy, very, very pleased

0:19:12 > 0:19:15and very proud to see Kai in all of his show jumping gear,

0:19:15 > 0:19:19with his show jacket and his white shirt and his tie.

0:19:19 > 0:19:20See you in a minute.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23- Do you need a hairnet?- Really?

0:19:23 > 0:19:25SHE CHUCKLES

0:19:25 > 0:19:28Well, so far I think he looks amazing.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Mum, I always look amazing!

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Yeah, I know, to YOU!

0:19:33 > 0:19:39- Don't take my... Mum!- Come on, Kai! - Mum, it's a very delicate process.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41The anticipation is killing me here.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43I'm making sure it's perfect.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50SHE GIGGLES

0:19:50 > 0:19:54It's very smooth. Ready. Ready to go.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56With this competition coming up, I am quite nervous,

0:19:56 > 0:19:59because it's my first ever one and it will be at my local stables.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02It's going to be really, really difficult because I'll have

0:20:02 > 0:20:05so many butterflies in my stomach, but most of all,

0:20:05 > 0:20:07I'm going to look awesomely good!

0:20:09 > 0:20:12When I woke up on the competition morning, I was scared,

0:20:12 > 0:20:16I was happy - so many feelings were going through my body.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23You're the best.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27Everything - all the training I put into it - that's the day when

0:20:27 > 0:20:30all the work was released from that cannon

0:20:30 > 0:20:33and it went to work, basically.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40This is the day you've all been waiting for, guys -

0:20:40 > 0:20:44my first ever competition. My friends and family are here

0:20:44 > 0:20:46to support and I'm ready to go.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02The first of my two competitions today is a general clear round.

0:21:02 > 0:21:06All those riders who go clear automatically get a rosette.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08Remember the rules of a clear round, guys -

0:21:08 > 0:21:11I mustn't knock down any poles, Gypsy mustn't refuse to jump

0:21:11 > 0:21:13and I can't fall off.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16Before I went into that ring, I could see people was looking at me

0:21:16 > 0:21:20and you think to yourself, "Oh, no, I'm really scared

0:21:20 > 0:21:22"and something bad is going to happen."

0:21:22 > 0:21:23APPLAUSE

0:21:28 > 0:21:30OK, Kai! Off you go, when you're ready.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34I just went straight into it, I just wanted to get it over with.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42When I got over that first jump, it wasn't that big,

0:21:42 > 0:21:45but to me it felt like it was six feet tall.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51Everything was on high alert. I felt the horse breathing,

0:21:51 > 0:21:55I felt its paces, I felt its movement

0:21:55 > 0:21:57and I just went with those movements.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11When I was coming to that final jump, I thought,

0:22:11 > 0:22:14"I really hope the horse doesn't stop now!"

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Oh.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27- Oh, my days!- Not bad, eh?!

0:22:27 > 0:22:29SHE EXHALES SHARPLY

0:22:30 > 0:22:32Well done, mate.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35When I got that ribbon saying clear round, I thought to myself,

0:22:35 > 0:22:37"I can do it, I don't have to have the nerves any more."

0:22:37 > 0:22:39High-five me.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41Yeah!

0:22:41 > 0:22:45I didn't breathe the whole way round, so...

0:22:45 > 0:22:48next time I shall know to breathe, I'll be fine.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Ding, ding, ding!

0:22:52 > 0:22:55I felt very proud of me and Gypsy. We worked together as a team.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00The day is not over yet. The jumps are going up

0:23:00 > 0:23:01and the course made harder.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04It's now the elimination rounds.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06Rosettes are now awarded to the fastest six riders

0:23:06 > 0:23:08during the final jump-off.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12However, to get to the final I need to first go clear once again.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15No clear round and I'm out of the competition.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18I've got butterflies for him.

0:23:20 > 0:23:21SHE EXHALES SHARPLY

0:23:21 > 0:23:24Before I went in, I said to myself, "All right,

0:23:24 > 0:23:26"it's like the first round, just with more jumps

0:23:26 > 0:23:30"and it's slightly more difficult. Breathe, you can do it."

0:23:47 > 0:23:50SHE GASPS

0:23:50 > 0:23:53When Gypsy refused, I thought to myself,

0:23:53 > 0:23:55"I can't believe this is happening."

0:23:55 > 0:23:58MUSIC: Are You With Me by Lost Frequencies

0:24:07 > 0:24:11It wasn't the horse's fault, it was mine, because I wasn't kicking on.

0:24:11 > 0:24:15But I'm not going to give up and I'm going to at least finish

0:24:15 > 0:24:18the competition, even if I am eliminated for what just happened.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21# I wanna dance by water 'neath the Mexican sky

0:24:22 > 0:24:24# Drink some Margaritas by a string of blue lights

0:24:26 > 0:24:29# Listen to the Mariachi play at midnight

0:24:29 > 0:24:33# Are you with me? Are you with me? #

0:24:36 > 0:24:38Kai, Kai, Kai - head up, head up.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44It's all right, Mum.

0:24:46 > 0:24:50Well done. Well done, mate.

0:24:50 > 0:24:51Thanks, Mum.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55You did brill. OK?

0:24:55 > 0:24:57You did brill.

0:24:57 > 0:25:01Even when he had a challenge with it, he kept going. He didn't just

0:25:01 > 0:25:05say, "I can't do this," and give up, he kept going and he finished it.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09So, yeah. I'm really, really pleased with him.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24COCKEREL CROWS

0:25:24 > 0:25:28Since the competition day, I've suffered a little knock

0:25:28 > 0:25:31to my confidence. So I'm speaking to Emile Faurie for advice

0:25:31 > 0:25:33on how to pick myself up and move forward.

0:25:33 > 0:25:37As I said, learn to focus on the positive things. You went in -

0:25:37 > 0:25:40your first ever competition, your first round ever -

0:25:40 > 0:25:42- and you jumped a clear.- Mm.

0:25:42 > 0:25:46I know some famous show jumpers that fell off in their first round ever.

0:25:46 > 0:25:50It's just my second round, I kind of went in too early.

0:25:50 > 0:25:55I rushed on the horse and didn't get through.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59I was quite upset cos, as anyone would think, it's your first thing,

0:25:59 > 0:26:01you want to do proud and you want to do it well.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04Make sure that you don't beat yourself up about that,

0:26:04 > 0:26:06because disappointments happen in sport

0:26:06 > 0:26:09and what makes the difference between a good sportsmen

0:26:09 > 0:26:12and a brilliant sportsmen is to learn from what

0:26:12 > 0:26:15you didn't do so well. And the fact that you already

0:26:15 > 0:26:19- realise this yourself, you know, that's great.- Yeah, yeah.

0:26:19 > 0:26:23Yeah, I definitely understand what you're saying there.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26No talk of failure, OK?

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Failure is when you give up!

0:26:29 > 0:26:33Nice talking to him again, definitely.

0:26:33 > 0:26:34He's right, I can never fail.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37I can only make mistakes and I can learn from them

0:26:37 > 0:26:38and change them.

0:26:40 > 0:26:45So instead of crying over losing,

0:26:45 > 0:26:47get on with life and get on to my next competition

0:26:47 > 0:26:50and just show people that even though I've lost,

0:26:50 > 0:26:52I'm not going to fall and just crumble,

0:26:52 > 0:26:54I'm going to get back up again

0:26:54 > 0:26:58and I'm going to try again and keep trying.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02MUSIC: Stay With Me by Sam Smith

0:27:19 > 0:27:21Oh, I love you, boo-boo.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25Subtitles by Ericsson

0:27:25 > 0:27:27# Oh, won't you stay with me

0:27:27 > 0:27:33# Cos you're all I need

0:27:33 > 0:27:38# This ain't love, it's clear to see

0:27:38 > 0:27:43# But darling stay with me. #
