0:00:18 > 0:00:20I'm Grace, and I love running.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24I'm about to take part in the most important race of my life,

0:00:24 > 0:00:27but I'm facing an extra challenge.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29I have a lung disease called cystic fibrosis.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33I'm Cerys, and I love music.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36I'm preparing for the most important exam of my life.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38I have cystic fibrosis too...

0:00:38 > 0:00:40- And breathe out. - SHE EXHALES

0:00:40 > 0:00:41..and have my own big challenge -

0:00:41 > 0:00:45to take more responsibility for my medications.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48It's hard for us to do the things that other kids do.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50- We have loads of treatments. - SHE EXHALES

0:00:50 > 0:00:53We sometimes spend weeks in hospital.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56And we take mountains of medicine.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00But we are determined not to let cystic fibrosis get in our way.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03- BOTH:- So, to prepare for the challenge of our lives...

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Come on, Grace, really give it everything!

0:01:05 > 0:01:07..we take a deep breath.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10MUSIC: Roar by Katy Perry

0:01:10 > 0:01:11This is my family -

0:01:11 > 0:01:14my mum, brother and dad.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16He's a runner too.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19I love running because there's always something to aim for -

0:01:19 > 0:01:21to get a new PB or to try and win a race.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24CHEERING AND APPLAUSE I've joined a running club.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26We've been training really hard.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30In the summer, we do track and 1,500m, 800m,

0:01:30 > 0:01:35and, in the winter, we do seriously muddy cross-country, which is great.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38This is my room and these are my trophies,

0:01:38 > 0:01:41and I think this is the one that I'm most proud of

0:01:41 > 0:01:45cos it's from the Brighton Mini Mile two years ago,

0:01:45 > 0:01:47which was then.

0:01:47 > 0:01:48I wasn't expecting to win it.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50I had never done any running before,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53and then I won and I was, like, flabbergasted,

0:01:53 > 0:01:57and so, the next year, I entered it again, but I was a year older,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59and therefore in a higher age group,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02and came second, which I was really proud of.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04This race inspired me to become a runner

0:02:04 > 0:02:07and it's my last year at under-13.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09I've got a lot to prove to myself.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11MUSIC: Fight Song by Rachel Platten

0:02:11 > 0:02:15This is the race I really want to win more than any other race.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Obviously, because of my cystic fibrosis

0:02:18 > 0:02:22I have lots obstacles to overcome, but I always carry on with training

0:02:22 > 0:02:24because I just don't want it to control my life.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26I just want to forget about it and move on.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29And...action!

0:02:29 > 0:02:31I'm Cerys and I love music.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Come on, now, go to bed.

0:02:33 > 0:02:34This is my mum...

0:02:34 > 0:02:35A coiled spring!

0:02:35 > 0:02:37..and this is my dad.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39I play three instruments -

0:02:39 > 0:02:42the tenor horn, the piano and the trombone -

0:02:42 > 0:02:45and these are my music certificates.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Quite a lot of work has gone into all of these.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50I've been playing music

0:02:50 > 0:02:51since I was tiny

0:02:51 > 0:02:53but I've got some big challenges ahead.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57I've got my Grade Five trombone exam coming up.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Having CF, it's kind of like an extra obstacle for me to pass

0:03:00 > 0:03:04because sometimes I can get out of breath quicker

0:03:04 > 0:03:06playing my instruments than other people would,

0:03:06 > 0:03:10especially if I'm not healthy and I'm not well.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13On top of that, I've got a concert to prepare for,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15and there's an added pressure.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18On the concert day, I'll have to take quite a lot of medication,

0:03:18 > 0:03:22and this is the very first time I'll be doing all of it on my own.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26I have done bits of it before, but not for the whole day.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28I kind of know what to do -

0:03:28 > 0:03:32it's just that responsibility, as well.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35So, as I prepare for the exam and concert...

0:03:35 > 0:03:37..and I get ready for my race,

0:03:37 > 0:03:39we can never escape our cystic fibrosis.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41MUSIC: Pompeii by Bastille

0:03:41 > 0:03:44We were born with this lung disease. You can't catch it.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48People with Cystic Fibrosis - CF - look like everybody else,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51even though we have a very serious condition.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55It causes our bodies to create thick mucus in our lungs.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58This can make it hard for us to breathe.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- HEAVY BREATHING - It can make us sick and tired

0:04:01 > 0:04:04and sometimes we have to stay in hospital.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08There isn't a cure but there are lots of treatments we can do.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10These treatments keep us alive.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16If I'd, like, known what it was like without CF,

0:04:16 > 0:04:19I'd probably feel a lot more, like, depressed all the time

0:04:19 > 0:04:22but cos I, just, like... That's just how it is

0:04:22 > 0:04:25and I don't really know what it's like not to have it,

0:04:25 > 0:04:28it's just kind of, like, normal.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I don't like having CF, but I can't let it beat me,

0:04:31 > 0:04:36and I want to life as normal a life as I can, as possible.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40'There are lots of things we have to do every single day

0:04:40 > 0:04:44'to fight our cystic fibrosis, including using a nebulizer.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48'This machine turns my medicine into a mist

0:04:48 > 0:04:51'which I breathe deep into my lungs.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53'It helps loosen the mucus that's stuck inside.'

0:04:55 > 0:04:58It's quite boring and repetitive.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01'And that's just the start of it! Next, I do physio.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07'This is a series of lung exercises that shakes up the mucus inside,

0:05:07 > 0:05:10'and no, my mum's not hitting me -

0:05:10 > 0:05:13'she's helping stop the mucus from settling and getting infected.'

0:05:13 > 0:05:15Higher, higher. Good girl.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17'By the time I've got to school,

0:05:17 > 0:05:22'I've already done an hour and a half's worth of CF-related things.'

0:05:22 > 0:05:26It wastes time and you can't, like, just be, like,

0:05:26 > 0:05:28free like everyone else.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32I'm really happy because I've done my two sessions of physio

0:05:32 > 0:05:34so I won't have to do any more for today.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36- Apart from this. - SHE SCREAMS

0:05:36 > 0:05:42I use nebulizers too, but my physio is a little bit different.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Well, this is my physio vest... MACHINE RUMBLES

0:05:45 > 0:05:47..and, basically, it shakes a lot and it's really loud,

0:05:47 > 0:05:49erm, so, erm... HER VOICE VIBRATES

0:05:49 > 0:05:52..and it, basically, just, like.. getting up all the mucus

0:05:52 > 0:05:55and stopping it from settling right at the bottom of my lungs.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58It's really weird, and if I have it after I've eaten,

0:05:58 > 0:06:00it makes me feel a bit sick, obviously.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03I have to do it twice a day, normally for about 25 minutes.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06It kind of, erm, aches,

0:06:06 > 0:06:09and it makes your back a bit achy and stuff after a while.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12I have to do some treatment before school

0:06:12 > 0:06:16and then some after school, and it means I have to get up quite early.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19It's quite hard to fit around homework and things.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22We depend on a lot of other medicines too.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25And this is my medicine cupboard.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27# Yeah-eah-eah-eah Yo... #

0:06:27 > 0:06:30This is my Salbutamol inhaler.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32This one's my Creon tablets.

0:06:32 > 0:06:33This is Gaviscon...

0:06:33 > 0:06:35These are my Azithromycin tablets.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37- ..my Movicol...- Salt tablets.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39..antibiotics...

0:06:39 > 0:06:40Omeprazole tablets.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42..and this is my Montelukast...

0:06:42 > 0:06:43Vitamin E tablets.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46..and this is my other antibiotics.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48Vitamin A and D capsules.

0:06:48 > 0:06:49This is my Domperidome...

0:06:49 > 0:06:52That goes in the nebulizer.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54..and this is probably the biggest pill I have to take,

0:06:54 > 0:06:56and it absolutely stinks.

0:06:56 > 0:07:01The one I dislike the most is this one, which is my salt neb.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05It makes me gag and cough a lot whilst I'm having my physio,

0:07:05 > 0:07:07so I don't really like that.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11That's about 2,700 pills a month between both of us.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20Playing my brass instruments is like a treatment for my CF as well

0:07:20 > 0:07:23because when I blow into the instruments,

0:07:23 > 0:07:27it can help with my lungs and help it get any yuck off my chest,

0:07:27 > 0:07:28a bit like physio.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31I still need to do the physio treatment, just to make sure,

0:07:31 > 0:07:34but the brass does help a lot.

0:07:34 > 0:07:35I love brass anyway.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38I still think I'd still play it if I didn't have CF.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41It's kind of lucky that playing brass instruments does help as well.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46'My best friend Evie is in my orchestra too.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48'She knows all about my cystic fibrosis

0:07:48 > 0:07:52'and how I want to do my own treatments on concert day.'

0:07:52 > 0:07:53It's, like, a really big step

0:07:53 > 0:07:55because I'll have to take my nebulizer

0:07:55 > 0:07:57for the first time on my own.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Would you come and help me with that?

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Yeah, sure, I'll always be there for you when you need.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05As a friend, I need to know, like, correctly,

0:08:05 > 0:08:08what I need to do with you, because I don't want to go wrong.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12Erm, well, I've learnt how to put my nebulizer together

0:08:12 > 0:08:14and do all the medicine and things,

0:08:14 > 0:08:17but it would be really nice if you could just supervise me

0:08:17 > 0:08:21- and make sure I don't feel lonely and just chat to me.- Yeah.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23OK, I'll just make sure that you don't feel nervous

0:08:23 > 0:08:25about doing it on your own.

0:08:25 > 0:08:26OK, thanks.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33I haven't really told anybody at my running club about CF.

0:08:33 > 0:08:34I didn't really tell them

0:08:34 > 0:08:36because I just didn't want to make a big thing about it

0:08:36 > 0:08:40and I just didn't really want to be, like, different from everybody else.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44'But, as my big race approaches, I've decided it's time to

0:08:44 > 0:08:47'tell my friend and running partner, Betty,

0:08:47 > 0:08:49'so we're heading out for a pizza.'

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Yeah, they've got better players but...

0:08:52 > 0:08:54'OK, I've got to spit it out.'

0:08:54 > 0:08:57- ..there's something about the way they play.- 'Here goes nothing.'

0:08:57 > 0:09:01- I have a chest condition called cystic fibrosis...- Oh.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03..and, if I get a cough or something,

0:09:03 > 0:09:05it can get really bad really quickly.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Then, sometimes, I have to go into hospital to get...

0:09:07 > 0:09:09To have, like, more... Erm, like...

0:09:09 > 0:09:13- Attention and, just, yeah...- Yeah, like more antibiotics and things.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16How did you get the condition? Were you just born with it?

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Yeah, it's genetic,

0:09:18 > 0:09:20so, like, if one of my parents has one of the genes...

0:09:20 > 0:09:22- Oh.- ..and then my other...

0:09:22 > 0:09:25and then my other parent also has it, then it's quite likely that...

0:09:25 > 0:09:27- You'll... OK.- Yeah.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31'I was really, really nervous before I told Betty about CF, but'

0:09:31 > 0:09:32I think it went well.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36I like the way she, kind of, didn't make a big deal about it.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Like, she was curious, but it wasn't like a huge thing.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42'It feels good to have told Betty about my condition,

0:09:42 > 0:09:44'but the one thing I'd love to do, but can't,

0:09:44 > 0:09:47'is sit and chat with someone who actually has CF -

0:09:47 > 0:09:50'someone who knows what it's really like.'

0:09:50 > 0:09:53It's not a good idea for two people with CF to meet

0:09:53 > 0:09:56because there's a risk of cross-infection.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58This means we might pass bugs to each other,

0:09:58 > 0:10:00which could make us ill,

0:10:00 > 0:10:03so, no matter how much we want to meet...

0:10:03 > 0:10:05..cystic fibrosis will always get in the way.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09'But Cerys and I have found a solution -

0:10:09 > 0:10:11'we'll chat through our computers!' COMPUTER BEEPS

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Here we go!

0:10:13 > 0:10:14Hello.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Hi. How are you?

0:10:16 > 0:10:18I'm good. How about you?

0:10:18 > 0:10:19Yeah, cool.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23'It's great to speak to someone dealing with the stuff as me.'

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Do you have to go into, erm, hospital that much?

0:10:26 > 0:10:30Erm, well, the last time was about a year ago,

0:10:30 > 0:10:32a year and a bit ago.

0:10:32 > 0:10:33How about you?

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Erm, well, I went in just before Christmas.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39Were you in hospital over Christmas, then?

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Erm, no, it was just before, luckily,

0:10:41 > 0:10:42so I got back from hospital

0:10:42 > 0:10:44just to have the last two weeks of school

0:10:44 > 0:10:45before Christmas holidays.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Do you find it hard to go on sleepovers and stuff

0:10:48 > 0:10:50and, like, fitting it around, like, treatments?

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Yeah, last time I went on a sleepover,

0:10:53 > 0:10:55I had to do physio,

0:10:55 > 0:10:57and all my friends wanted to know,

0:10:57 > 0:11:01like, what it was and why I was doing it

0:11:01 > 0:11:03and yeah, it's quite hard to fit it in.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07Does CF make you, like, determined to do better?

0:11:07 > 0:11:08I think so, yeah. What about you?

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Do you think that as well?

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Yeah, like, cystic fibrosis isn't going to beat me.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17'After speaking with Cerys, I feel more determined than ever.'

0:11:19 > 0:11:20Are you ready to go, Dad?

0:11:20 > 0:11:21Yeah, I'm ready.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28'Dad is helping me prepare for my big Brighton race.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35'In one way, cystic fibrosis really motivates me to go running -

0:11:35 > 0:11:39'it's just such great treatment for my chest.'

0:11:39 > 0:11:43So, we'll down there, around there, up the steep hill,

0:11:43 > 0:11:47I'll time you, and then we'll do it again and again and again,

0:11:47 > 0:11:49and we've got to keep the same time all the way.

0:11:49 > 0:11:50Go!

0:11:50 > 0:11:53'When I'm running, especially in the longer distances,

0:11:53 > 0:11:56'my CF sometimes makes my chest hurt a bit'

0:11:56 > 0:11:59but, erm, I just try to make that motivate me to go faster.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01Good, you're on target. Keep going.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04'The faster I run, the sooner the pain will be over.'

0:12:04 > 0:12:05Push it! Attack!

0:12:05 > 0:12:0750, 1, 2...

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Bang.

0:12:09 > 0:12:10So, have a quick breather, now.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- How was it?- It was cool.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14- Chest?- A bit tight but..

0:12:14 > 0:12:15Bit tight.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17- It always is.- Yeah.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Go!

0:12:19 > 0:12:21'Dad pushes me quite hard and helps me do my best...'

0:12:21 > 0:12:2324, 25... On target.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Right, attack it!

0:12:25 > 0:12:27'..but he's very competitive.'

0:12:27 > 0:12:29She's already better than me at swimming -

0:12:29 > 0:12:30she can smash me in the pool -

0:12:30 > 0:12:33and there is no way, being a very competitive dad,

0:12:33 > 0:12:36that I'm going to allow her to beat me on the track as well.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39'But can he beat my 52 seconds?' Three, two, one, go.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26'depending on the amount of fat in what I'm eating.'

0:18:26 > 0:18:30So, this is, like - I don't know - about 13g of fat,

0:18:30 > 0:18:36so I need one Creon for every 5g and 13 is closer to 15 than 10.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38'It's an important calculation.'

0:18:38 > 0:18:41I think that the reason that you're really good at maths is

0:18:41 > 0:18:44because you have to do maths every single day.

0:18:44 > 0:18:49You have to take pills and you have to work it out using your brain.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53Do the tablets taste of anything?

0:18:53 > 0:18:56Some of the medicines I have, there's, like, no coating on them,

0:18:56 > 0:18:59so I put them in my mouth and they taste disgusting.

0:18:59 > 0:19:00How disgusting is it?

0:19:00 > 0:19:02Oh...

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Erm, and your 5K PB is not quite as quick as mine yet

0:20:12 > 0:20:14but it's getting there, isn't it?

0:20:14 > 0:20:16Cos I've been tracking you on Parkrun.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20Erm, so tell me about the pain,

0:20:20 > 0:20:22and does it hurt while you're running?

0:20:22 > 0:20:25A little bit, yeah, and sometimes, after I go running,

0:20:25 > 0:20:28my chest feels tighter and it does hurt more when I breathe in.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31Your chest feels tighter sort of in a lung way or in a...?

0:20:46 > 0:20:48Your CT, which I'm sure you want to look at,

0:20:48 > 0:20:50looks pretty good, actually.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52- Does it?- Yeah, it does. - Oh, that's a relief.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55Your chest is structurally normal.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57There's nothing that I'm worried about, looking at it.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00There's no great blocks of infection or anything like that.

0:21:00 > 0:21:01I think we're in a good place.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04I don't think we're quite on top of exactly what's happening,

0:21:04 > 0:21:06but I think there are interventions to make today

0:21:06 > 0:21:09that will hopefully improve things.

0:21:09 > 0:21:10Is that sort of...?

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Oh, very good news, yeah.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14Yeah, all right, I'll leave you to it.
