0:00:18 > 0:00:22It's the 27th May and the biggest day of my life.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28I'm at the airport with my family, but we're not just going on holiday.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35We've packed our whole lives into bags and boxes and we're flying to

0:00:35 > 0:00:39the other side of the world to start a brand-new life in New Zealand.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42But about half the Brits who move to another country

0:00:42 > 0:00:44change their minds and come back.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46What if it doesn't work out for us?

0:00:48 > 0:00:52Strap yourself in and find out, cos we've got a one-way ticket!

0:00:54 > 0:00:57We've been preparing for the last four weeks,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00so our story really starts back in April.

0:01:04 > 0:01:05This is me.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07My name is Daniel and I'm ten years old.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09Everyone calls me Dan.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14My little brother Jake is seven.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18This is our house in Devon.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23And this is our mum and dad.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27New Zealand it nearly 12,000 miles away,

0:01:27 > 0:01:31and is split into two islands - the North and the South.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33The people who live there call themselves Kiwis,

0:01:33 > 0:01:36after the local kiwi bird.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39This all started because Dad has found an amazing new job

0:01:39 > 0:01:43in New Zealand so as a family we've decided to move there.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47We know from our own experience a lot of people have made

0:01:47 > 0:01:50the big move to New Zealand and then when they've got there,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53decided it's the wrong choice and they've come back.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57So once we've been out there for a while, we'll have a big decision

0:01:57 > 0:01:59to make - should we stay, or should we return to the UK?

0:02:01 > 0:02:05If it doesn't work out and we have to come back, I may not

0:02:05 > 0:02:09have any friends left - they might have forgotten about me by then.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18It's two weeks until the move.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Flying to New Zealand takes 36 hours

0:02:21 > 0:02:25and the tickets are really expensive so we have to say a big goodbye

0:02:25 > 0:02:29to all the people we love here in the UK, including our grandparents.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31BELL RINGS

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Hello. All right?

0:02:34 > 0:02:39My grandad is a very kind and very spoiling grandad.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Come on, you two. In we go.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44When they told me that they were going to New Zealand,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46it was a mixture of emotions.

0:02:46 > 0:02:51One was sad because I wouldn't like them to go

0:02:51 > 0:02:54but the other one was joy for them as a family.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Aww! Thanks, Grandad!

0:03:01 > 0:03:05Over the last couple of months I've been trying to get my grandad

0:03:05 > 0:03:08up-to-date with everything like Face Talk and stuff like that

0:03:08 > 0:03:12so when we're in New Zealand we can see each other on the computer.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16- Press enter.- I thought we did that.

0:03:16 > 0:03:21I keep up but it's hard, it really is hard work because I don't really

0:03:21 > 0:03:26understand the terminology that they come out with, but I'm learning.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30- Hello.- All right? Give us a big wave.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35- Can you see me, Grandad? - Yeah, I can see you.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40Considering his age I thought he would never achieve it, but he is.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43- Grandad, what was your week like? - My week?

0:03:43 > 0:03:46I've been out in the garden for the first time for ages...

0:03:46 > 0:03:51With this video link, I can talk to Daniel and Jake

0:03:51 > 0:03:54whenever they want to and I can see them

0:03:54 > 0:03:58and we can have a good time together as if we were in the next room.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Ah!

0:04:04 > 0:04:08It's going to be really tough to say goodbye to this special someone.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Bailey is basically my cat.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14I like him because, sort of boy stuff,

0:04:14 > 0:04:18he farts a lot of the time.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21He's the world's best cat farter!

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Bailey gets terrible sunburn, so we've decided not to take him

0:04:24 > 0:04:26to New Zealand.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28Bailey means the world to me.

0:04:28 > 0:04:35I can't imagine him without me or the other way round, me without him.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Luckily, some family friends have said they'll give Bailey a new home.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53I'll probably never see Bailey again.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59- Hiya.- Bailey's come to see you.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Let's bring him in. Put him down there.

0:05:02 > 0:05:07I sort of just went upstairs and stayed there for a minute.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14It's time for our last cuddle.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23It was quite hard, but with 300 tissues, it helps you.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Just five days until the move.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42Today is my last day at school, and I feel nervous saying goodbye

0:05:42 > 0:05:46to all my friends and everything, but I hope it just goes well.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52It says, "Ben, you are awesome. I will miss you."

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Much improved, Daniel!

0:05:57 > 0:06:00- Have you seen what you look like? - No, you've got squiggles.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05I never thought I'd say this

0:06:05 > 0:06:07but I think I might miss school quite a bit.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Packing day!

0:06:16 > 0:06:19We're flying to New Zealand with just one suitcase each but

0:06:19 > 0:06:23everything else in our house needs to be packed into lots of boxes.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25which will take a whole two months to travel to

0:06:25 > 0:06:28New Zealand on a huge ship.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Bye, house!

0:06:32 > 0:06:34The big day!

0:06:38 > 0:06:41We've spent the last few nights with our grandparents to stock up

0:06:41 > 0:06:47on as many hugs as possible but now it's time for our final goodbye.

0:06:51 > 0:06:52See ya. Take care.

0:06:55 > 0:06:56Bye!

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Bye! See you in a couple of years!

0:07:01 > 0:07:06It's really hard not knowing when I'll see my grandparents again.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09But I'm still excited about starting our new life.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18Gentlemen, start your engines!

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Our New Zealand adventure is under way!

0:07:29 > 0:07:31I can see New Zealand.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Wow! You have to see this!

0:07:43 > 0:07:44We've arrived.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49It's our first morning in our new home.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53We're jet-lagged but we want to get to know Wellington.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55We've heard we can get the best view of our new city

0:07:55 > 0:07:57from the top of Mount Victoria.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Look at that view. To think this is where we live!

0:08:07 > 0:08:10New Zealand became part of the British Empire in 1840, before

0:08:10 > 0:08:16gaining independence in 1947, but it still has our Queen on its money.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25The first ever people to live in New Zealand were called the Maori

0:08:25 > 0:08:28and today we're visiting one of their traditional villages.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33When the Maori meet people they rub noses, which is called a hongi.

0:08:36 > 0:08:37Kiora.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39That means "hello" in Maori.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43Jake and I are excited about tonight

0:08:43 > 0:08:46because we get to sleep in a traditional Maori hut.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51We've been invited to train as warriors.

0:08:51 > 0:08:56So the tattoos or the mojos would tell somebody who you are,

0:08:56 > 0:08:58they talk about your ancestors.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01When I looked in the mirror at first it looked quite strange

0:09:01 > 0:09:03but at the same time really cool.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Next up, we're going to learn the haka.

0:09:06 > 0:09:12Bend at the knees. Straight back. Chest out and let out a big, "Hey!"

0:09:12 > 0:09:13ALL: Hey!

0:09:13 > 0:09:15- Hey! - ALL: Hey!

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Hogana. Yeah!

0:09:18 > 0:09:21The haka is a dance to greet people

0:09:21 > 0:09:24and for the men to scare the opposition in battle.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27THEY PERFORM THE HAKA

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Understanding Maori culture makes me feel

0:09:30 > 0:09:32a lot more like a Kiwi.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Six months later!

0:09:39 > 0:09:43- We moved into our new house.- Good morning.- Dad started his new job.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47We started at the local school.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51# Happy birthday, dear Dan and Jake... #

0:09:51 > 0:09:54We both had our birthdays.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57It may not look like it, but right now it's November.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00The UK's winter is New Zealand's summer.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04But first things first - it's time for school!

0:10:09 > 0:10:11See you.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15I get to school and I do my goal of what I want to achieve in the day.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19Next we do a karakia...

0:10:19 > 0:10:22THEY RECITE A KARAKIA

0:10:25 > 0:10:29..which is a Maori blessing of the day

0:10:29 > 0:10:32saying I hope we have a good day, I hope we survive.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34THEY RECITE A KARAKIA

0:10:36 > 0:10:40At break time I hang out with my friends Luke and Brooke.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44When Dan started coming here, he sounded different to all of us

0:10:44 > 0:10:47because he's just come from England.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51It was kind of strange but I got used to it and we're friends now.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56The friends over here are awesome

0:10:56 > 0:11:00and they like playing games that I like to play.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04So that's all good, but the biggest difference we've

0:11:04 > 0:11:09found between living in New Zealand and living in the UK is...

0:11:09 > 0:11:11earthquakes!

0:11:11 > 0:11:13So far we've been here in New Zealand for half a year

0:11:13 > 0:11:16and there's been two big earthquakes.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20It's so serious that we have to practise earthquake drills at school.

0:11:20 > 0:11:25What do we do when we hear or feel an earthquake?

0:11:25 > 0:11:26Let's do it all together.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29ALL: Drop, cover, hold.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31Earthquake!

0:11:38 > 0:11:40Apart from dealing with earthquakes,

0:11:40 > 0:11:43coming to New Zealand has meant making sacrifices.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45The hardest thing about moving to New Zealand is

0:11:45 > 0:11:47leaving your friends and family behind.

0:11:47 > 0:11:53- Hello, boys. How are you?- Hi. - How is school going?

0:11:53 > 0:11:57- Really good.- Very well.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00The bad thing about video calling is you can talk to them, you can

0:12:00 > 0:12:04say hi but you can't actually touch them and they're not actually there.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08Well, I must admit, the pair of you, I miss you a hell of a lot.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10I miss you loads and loads.

0:12:10 > 0:12:16It makes me feel quite sad, because I used to just

0:12:16 > 0:12:22walk in through the door of their house and hug them but over here,

0:12:22 > 0:12:27when we video call them, all we can do is just start speaking.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30- Goodbye.- Bye.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42So it's decision time - should we stay or should we go?

0:12:49 > 0:12:54Even though I miss everyone from home, I think New Zealand's

0:12:54 > 0:12:59worth it for all the outdoor sports and stuff.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Mum and Dad have decided they want to stay in New Zealand

0:13:02 > 0:13:05and that makes me and Jake very happy.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Moving here, I think, was definitely a good decision,

0:13:07 > 0:13:11because we have all of this and this is really good.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16I definitely feel that our family's future is in New Zealand.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20It'll be the measure of how long that future is.

0:13:20 > 0:13:24We'll let you know in 10, 15, 20 or 56 years' time.

0:13:24 > 0:13:29I think I'm going to turn more into a Kiwi as I grow older

0:13:29 > 0:13:32but I'm always going to have that little bit of British inside me.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37I'm so glad we only got a one-way ticket.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40I feel about the future that it's going to work well

0:13:40 > 0:13:41and it's going to be amazing.
