0:00:06 > 0:00:10in the Highlands of Scotland for the My Pet And Me Winter Special.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13I love winter. Everything looks so different.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16The thing I love most about winter is when it snows

0:00:16 > 0:00:18and there is plenty of it all the way up here.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22It's great to get nice and cosy with hats, gloves and scarves.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26How about we both go visit a pet today, as a special winter treat?

0:00:26 > 0:00:30- Oh, that sounds awesome, Ferne. - The ones I have in mind don't need

0:00:30 > 0:00:35hats or scarves because they have lots of lovely fur to keep them warm.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37- Oh, do you want to come with us? - Come on!

0:00:37 > 0:00:40# My pet My pet and me

0:00:40 > 0:00:43# My pet My pet and me

0:00:43 > 0:00:48# Down every street are pets to meet

0:00:48 > 0:00:52# Some big, some small, some scaly, some furry

0:00:52 > 0:00:55# Some keep very still, some are always in a hurry

0:00:55 > 0:00:58# Some have four paws

0:00:58 > 0:01:01# Some have sharp claws

0:01:01 > 0:01:02- # Some quack - Some bark

0:01:02 > 0:01:04- # Some purr - Some moo

0:01:04 > 0:01:05- # Some grunt - Some squawk

0:01:05 > 0:01:07# Some cock-a-doodle-doo

0:01:07 > 0:01:10# My pet My pet and me

0:01:10 > 0:01:13# My pet My pet and me

0:01:13 > 0:01:15# My pet My pet and me

0:01:15 > 0:01:18# Have you met My pet and me? #

0:01:21 > 0:01:24We're at Loch Morlich in the Highlands of Scotland

0:01:24 > 0:01:29- to meet Ella and her very special dog.- This is so exciting, let's go.

0:01:35 > 0:01:40- Hiya!- Hello!- You must be Ella. Lovely to meet you.

0:01:40 > 0:01:41Hi, Ferne, hi, Rory!

0:01:41 > 0:01:44- And you must be Dad. Hi. - Hi, guys.- Hiya.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46And who are these guys?

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Spirit and Bracken.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Oh, they are gorgeous. What a lovely wee puppy.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55And look at Spirit. Amazing eyes. What sort of dog is he?

0:01:55 > 0:02:00- Siberian husky.- Oh, I thought so. I have never met a husky before.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03He is beautiful, but he is not your only Siberian husky, is he?

0:02:03 > 0:02:05- No.- How many do you have?

0:02:05 > 0:02:0612.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10- 12?!- Wow!- Whoa! Can't wait to meet them all.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14Siberian husky dogs originally come from an area in Russia

0:02:14 > 0:02:15called Siberia,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18which is a long way from the Scottish Highlands.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22Siberia's known for having very cold winters and wet summers.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25So husky dogs are well-suited to that climate.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29- What is the best thing about having Siberian huskies?- Cuddling them.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33Ah, that's lovely, isn't it?

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Ella, lots of people have got dogs, but not everyone has loads,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39like you. Why do you have so many?

0:02:39 > 0:02:43- Because we run them.- Oh! You run them? You race them on sleds?

0:02:43 > 0:02:45- Yeah.- That's exciting.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49Sled dogs are dogs that are bred to pull sleds or sleighs,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52usually in Arctic areas that have lots of snow.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55They would move important supplies from place to place,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59especially in areas that are hard to reach. Very clever!

0:02:59 > 0:03:03So, what do you do if there's no snow? Because a sled doesn't work

0:03:03 > 0:03:05- with no snow.- We use rigs.

0:03:05 > 0:03:10- Rigs?- Ah, so a rig is like a sled, but with wheels?- Yes.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11They sound like lots of fun.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15- Do you think we'll get to have a go on one later?- Yes!

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Oh-ho, man! I'm really looking forward to that,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21but first I think we should go and meet the other huskies.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Ferne, can you give us some fun facts about huskies?

0:03:24 > 0:03:27- I'd love to!- Let's go!

0:03:29 > 0:03:33Siberian husky dogs are powerful, athletic, energetic

0:03:33 > 0:03:35and have great stamina.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41They range from black to pure white in colour,

0:03:41 > 0:03:46with coloured markings on the body that include reds and copper.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50Huskies also have almond-shaped eyes

0:03:50 > 0:03:54and this can help them to keep the snow out when they squint.

0:04:01 > 0:04:02- Hello!- Wow!

0:04:02 > 0:04:06- I see you've found the rest of the huskies!- Yes, we have indeed.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10I'm loving getting to know these guys, but it's difficult

0:04:10 > 0:04:14- to remember all their names.- Ellie, you're going to have to help us.

0:04:14 > 0:04:22- Who have we got? - Spirit, Patchy, Nala...- That's Nala.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Thor. Loopy.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Timber,

0:04:27 > 0:04:29- Bailey.- He's not a husky!

0:04:29 > 0:04:34He's a spaniel cross hound and he thinks he's a husky, but he's not.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37- No, he's definitely not, not with those big ears.- No!

0:04:37 > 0:04:40It must be hard work having so many dogs.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43How do you help to care for all of them?

0:04:43 > 0:04:47We feed them, we give them water,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49walk them, and race them and sled them,

0:04:49 > 0:04:53and brush them and groom them.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- That's a lot, isn't it, Rory? - That is!

0:04:56 > 0:05:00I'm glad you mentioned walks, runs and sleigh rides with them

0:05:00 > 0:05:04because exercise is really important for huskies because

0:05:04 > 0:05:08- they've got loads of energy. - Well, how about we take some of them

0:05:08 > 0:05:11- for a walk to burn off that energy? - Yeah.- Who are we going to take?

0:05:11 > 0:05:15- Luna, Thor and Timber.- Great.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18- Shall we get them ready, then? - Yeah.- Great.- Let's go.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28We take our huskies for a walk at least two times a day.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35They need a lot of exercise so that they don't get bored.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37Thor is so strong!

0:05:37 > 0:05:40He's practically walking on two legs.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45They're too strong for me to hold on the lead, so I run along with them.

0:05:45 > 0:05:50And I can walk my puppy. I love spending time with my huskies.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52- Come in!- Oh-ho!- Come on in!

0:05:54 > 0:05:57That was a great walk. I think they really enjoyed it,

0:05:57 > 0:06:02- but where do these guys sleep and rest?- Here and in the lounge.- Wow.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05- So, what do we have to do now with these huskies?- Groom them.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08- These are some fluffy dogs. Shall we do that now?- Yeah.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12- OK, come on.- Yeah.- Come on, dogs.

0:06:12 > 0:06:13Come on, Thor!

0:06:13 > 0:06:16- Come on, Timber, you're next. - Come on, Timber.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20- Come on, Luna!- Be a good girl. - Ah, and Ella!- And Ella!

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Let's go.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32I think Thor's really excited to get brushed.

0:06:32 > 0:06:33Excuse me, Luna!

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Right!

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Thank you, Ella. Thor!

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Thank you very much.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Right, let's give it a bash.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44How often do you have to brush the huskies, Ella?

0:06:44 > 0:06:48When they get really furry.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52Luna's looking very furry. You're making a carpet out of that brush.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57- There's lots of hair coming off. Why is that, Ella?- They have double coat

0:06:57 > 0:07:01because when it's really cold, they have to be very warm.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05Two layers helps to keep them warm. They've got the fur on the outside,

0:07:05 > 0:07:10which is waterproof, and the stuff on the inside which keeps them cosy.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- You can see it a bit here, can't you?- Yeah.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15I think Thor really likes this.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17I'm getting a cuddle.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22Where you off to? You want your belly done?

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Yes, I'll do your belly. OK. OK.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26OK, I'll do your belly. OK

0:07:26 > 0:07:31These huskies are looking wonderful with their nice brushed coats.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35- What else do we need to do to look after your huskies?- Feed them and...

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Love.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41Oh, we do need to love them, don't we? Give them some love first.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Now, let's feed them. Come on, let's go.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53- Here.- This looks yummy!

0:07:53 > 0:07:58- Should I fill up the water and you can fill up the food?- Yeah.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Good.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04- Do your huskies eat a lot, Ella?- Yep.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07- And do they drink a lot of water? - Yeah.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10All that exercise, they need it.

0:08:10 > 0:08:11Excellent.

0:08:11 > 0:08:16- Should we get the hungry huskies over here?- Let's do it.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23- Come on, huskies, come on! - Come on!- Come on!

0:08:23 > 0:08:25- Oh!- Aw!

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Yum!

0:08:28 > 0:08:29Come on, Thor.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33Looks good. What do we need to do now, then?

0:08:33 > 0:08:35- Wash our hands. - Yes, come on.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Bye, doggy.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48Ella, it has been so lovely spending time with you and your huskies.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52- I can't wait to go for a ride with them later.- Yeah. How do you think

0:08:52 > 0:08:55- we will do in the rigs? - I think you'll love it.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59I like the sound of that. I'm really excited. I hope the huskies are too.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02If your huskies could do anything, Ella,

0:09:02 > 0:09:04what do you think they would do?

0:09:06 > 0:09:09If my huskies could do anything,

0:09:09 > 0:09:14they would go on an adventure to Penguin Island.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18They'd go ice skating across the frozen lake.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22When they were finished, they'd make some snow angels

0:09:22 > 0:09:26and then they would have some hot chocolate around the camp fire.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Yum, yum, yum.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35This will be the first time on a sled for Rory and me,

0:09:35 > 0:09:37and we are so excited.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40You've been sledding since you were young,

0:09:40 > 0:09:42- so you're quite an expert.- Yeah.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- What's your favourite thing about it?- Having the huskies run.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48- Oh, and do you like going fast?- Yeah.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52- That sounds exciting. And who's taking you out?- Spirit and Luna.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55- Oh, are you going to show us how it's done?- Yeah.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59- Right, off you go. Here she goes. - Here we go, come on!

0:09:59 > 0:10:00- Wow!- Look at her go!

0:10:08 > 0:10:11Even though Ella's been dog sledding for a long time,

0:10:11 > 0:10:15it's still very important to have an adult watching you

0:10:15 > 0:10:18and to use dogs that are trained for this activity.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28- Whoa!- Good work!

0:10:28 > 0:10:32- Ella, that was amazing!- Do you think it's time for us to have a shot?

0:10:39 > 0:10:42I've got Timber, my old friend, and Inca.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45- Now, what do we have to do? - "Hike on" is for go.

0:10:45 > 0:10:51- OK, hike on is go.- And, "Whoa" is for stopping.- Whoa. Whoa for stop.
