0:02:07 > 0:02:10He's beautiful, and so soft!

0:02:10 > 0:02:12But I hear that you have other animals.

0:02:12 > 0:02:17- We have reindeer, because we are Sami people.- That is fantastic.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24Sami people have lived in this part of Norway for a very long time,

0:02:24 > 0:02:27and they were some of the first people to settle

0:02:27 > 0:02:29in this part of the world.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32They have their own language and style of clothing.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35They are traditionally reindeer herders,

0:02:35 > 0:02:39and used to move all around the country with their reindeer,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42but nowadays many of them have settled in communities.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Some still keep reindeer.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47- So, where are your reindeer? - They are up in the mountains.

0:02:47 > 0:02:52- They're in the mountains? In the snow?- Mmm-hmm.- That is wonderful.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55What's your favourite thing about having reindeer?

0:02:55 > 0:02:58- Helping my family herd them. - Amazing. How do you do that?

0:02:58 > 0:03:01We go after them with snowmobiles.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03- You get to drive around on snowmobiles?- Yeah.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05That sounds like so much fun!

0:03:05 > 0:03:09My dad is going to visit the reindeer, if you want to go.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12I would love to go! Rory, while we get ready,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16could you please tell us some more fascinating facts

0:03:16 > 0:03:18about these remarkable reindeer?

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Of course, Fern.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26Reindeer are also known as "caribou" in North America.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34They can grow a new set of antlers every year.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Reindeer travel very far to look for food.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43They move up and down mountains and across the land,

0:03:43 > 0:03:49and this movement is called migration.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12DOG BARKS

0:04:17 > 0:04:19That was awesome!

0:04:19 > 0:04:22What a brilliant way to come up the mountain!

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Yeah, I know.

0:04:24 > 0:04:25It's great!

0:04:34 > 0:04:37- Look, Fern, there they are! - I can see.

0:04:37 > 0:04:38It's absolutely amazing.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40Look at all of them!

0:04:40 > 0:04:44There are some that are even just pure white, like the snow.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46These are incredible!

0:04:46 > 0:04:48And their lovely big antlers!

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Do the reindeer roam all over these mountains?

0:04:53 > 0:04:58Yeah, but our family goes and checks on them to see if they're healthy.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02The reindeer that they tend to are definitely not pets,

0:05:02 > 0:05:06but the family do keep a close eye on them, and every year

0:05:06 > 0:05:10they bring them a bit closer to the house, just to make sure they're OK.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12- Yeah, that's right. - I love them.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14They're beautiful.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20My grandad has some we could get closer to, if you like.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22I would love to go. How exciting!

0:05:22 > 0:05:23Let's go!

0:05:38 > 0:05:41- Hello.- Hello!- You must be Grandad.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43- That's right. - Lovely to meet you.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46I love your clothing, it's beautiful.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Yeah, that's the traditional Sami clothes from this area.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52I really, really love the colours.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56- These are his reindeer. - They are fantastic.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00- Would you help me look after them? - I'd love to. What do we need to do?

0:06:00 > 0:06:03- We could feed them. - That sounds like so much fun.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06- And here you have the food. - Fantastic. Thank you.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08- Ready?- Yeah.- Come on, reindeer.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14So, what is this that we're feeding them?

0:06:14 > 0:06:16Reindeer moss.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Reindeer moss is a type of lichen that grows on the ground,

0:06:19 > 0:06:21and they just love it.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25- How do they find the reindeer moss in the wild?- They sniff it.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28That is right. Reindeer have a fantastic sense of smell.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31And their clever noses can sniff up their food

0:06:31 > 0:06:34even when it's buried deep beneath the snow.

0:06:36 > 0:06:37Come on!

0:06:46 > 0:06:50- Why do some of them have bells? - Because grandad finds them easier.

0:06:50 > 0:06:55It's easier for your grandad to find them if it's snowy, isn't it?

0:06:55 > 0:06:58That reindeer there, with the big antlers, is beautiful.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01He looks a bit fluffy, doesn't he?

0:07:01 > 0:07:03Reindeer fur is very good at trapping air,

0:07:03 > 0:07:05and it keeps them nice and cosy.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09- And you've got special boots to keep your feet warm, don't you?- Yeah.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Yeah, they're lovely Sami boots.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14Let's go.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29- Wow, it gets dark very quickly here, doesn't it?- Mmm-hmm.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33That's because, in northern Norway, in winter, the sun only shines for

0:07:33 > 0:07:35about three hours a day.

0:07:38 > 0:07:43If your reindeer could do absolutely anything, what would they do?

0:07:47 > 0:07:51If the reindeer could do anything,

0:07:51 > 0:07:55it would walk to the North Pole

0:07:55 > 0:07:59and meet the other Arctic animals there.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03They would have a winter party around the pole,

0:08:03 > 0:08:05and lick giant ice lollies.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10And they would catch snowflakes on their antlers.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27There are lots of different Arctic animals in this part of Norway,

0:08:27 > 0:08:31so we've come to a special park to get a bit closer to some

0:08:31 > 0:08:35and see how they've adapted to live in these really cold conditions,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37just like the reindeer.

0:08:37 > 0:08:42- We're going to explore. We'll see you later.- OK, then. Bye.- Bye.- Bye.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49- Hiya.- Hi. - Hi, Cathrine.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Welcome to our park. I'm Cathrine and I'm an animal keeper here.

0:08:53 > 0:08:54Lovely to meet you.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58- So, who have we got in here?- In here, we have our two musk oxen.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00They're fantastic.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Musk oxen have a very shaggy coat, and underneath this

0:09:03 > 0:09:06is a shorter coat that's close to their body,

0:09:06 > 0:09:08that helps keep them warm.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11- Look at their big horns! - Yeah, they're huge.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14- Are they strong, too?- They are. And they run really fast.

0:09:14 > 0:09:15Oh, wow!

0:09:17 > 0:09:19The park has a lot of other animals.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23- Would you like to go and see them? - Yeah!- Yes, please.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36Cathrine has given us special permission

0:09:36 > 0:09:39to do something awesome with these lynx.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40You're going to feed the lynx

0:09:40 > 0:09:44and I'm going to stay here and tell you where to put it.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- That sounds good. Shall we go?- Let's go.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Lunch is ready!

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- Now we're going to have to hide it. Where do we go?- Throw some up there.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59- Up on the tree?- Yeah.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Lynx are very good at climbing.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08Their paws are nice and soft and it helps them to run and walk on snow,

0:10:08 > 0:10:11but underneath they've got these really big claws

0:10:11 > 0:10:14that help them to climb up trees.

0:10:19 > 0:10:20He's going to do it!

0:10:20 > 0:10:21Go on, Frost.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Wow!

0:10:30 > 0:10:32SHE SPEAKS OWN LANGUAGE

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Cathrine is going to let us see their climbing in action

0:10:35 > 0:10:39by hiding that meat high up on that tree.

0:10:39 > 0:10:40Wow!

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Look at that!

0:10:45 > 0:10:49You can see the beautiful black tufts on the very top of their ears,

0:10:49 > 0:10:54and this helps them to hear and keep their ears warm in the snow.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Cathrine has one last big surprise for us.

0:11:04 > 0:11:05Wolves!

0:11:08 > 0:11:11And we get to see them up close from in Wolf Lodge -
