0:03:21 > 0:03:25How else would you describe the sea lions? What are they like?

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Yes. And what about on land?
0:04:15 > 0:04:18They walk quite funny, don't they?
0:04:18 > 0:04:21- Yeah. - THE GIRLS LAUGH
0:04:21 > 0:04:25The sea lions are very friendly but we have to remember they're wild
0:04:25 > 0:04:29- animals and not pets, isn't that right?- Yes, Rory.- Absolutely.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32Wild animals like sea lions can be a bit unpredictable.
0:04:32 > 0:04:36It's important to give them plenty of space and not to touch them.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39That can interfere with their scent
0:04:39 > 0:04:42and we know how important sense of smell is for some animals.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39but the females tend to live longer than the males.
0:05:42 > 0:05:47The Galapagos sea lion has strong front and back flippers
0:05:47 > 0:05:49that can turn to face forward.
0:05:49 > 0:05:54These special flippers allow them to walk on land and glide gracefully
0:05:54 > 0:05:56through the water.
0:06:00 > 0:06:05On land, sea lions prefer sandy or rocky, flat beaches,
0:06:05 > 0:06:07because there's plenty of shade,
0:06:07 > 0:06:11tide pools to keep cool and it's easy for them to get in and out
0:06:11 > 0:06:12of calm water.
0:06:17 > 0:06:21The Galapagos sea lions like to group together to form
0:06:21 > 0:06:23what's known as a colony.
0:06:24 > 0:06:29There will only be one adult male within the group and he will be the
0:06:29 > 0:06:33head of the colony. They love to group together so much that they
0:06:33 > 0:06:38will even pack together when there is plenty of space around them.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34They are so relaxed here. What a great life.
0:07:34 > 0:07:38- What do you like about the sea lions?- The whiskers.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40They do have huge big whiskers.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- and to find food in the sea. - I like their little ears.
0:07:47 > 0:07:52Little tiny ears, look at them. They're so cute.
0:07:52 > 0:07:56And they can turn that tiny ear flap to help stop the sea water
0:07:56 > 0:07:58going into their ears.
0:07:58 > 0:08:01My ears look quite big compared to them.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07Yes, let's see your big flippers.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12# Caminando como un lobo... #
0:08:12 > 0:08:15RORY LAUGHS

0:08:38 > 0:08:41When the babies are very small, they have long,
0:08:41 > 0:08:44dark fur, but when they get to five months,
0:08:44 > 0:08:47they moult that out and they have their adult coat on.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50Just like this one. Look, the coat is much shorter.
0:08:50 > 0:08:53Very beautiful.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59- Here she comes. - THEY MAKE SEA LION NOISES
0:08:59 > 0:09:03Oh, amigas, she is so noisy.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08Yes, she was calling to her baby.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10And look, she's having a feed now.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13What do the babies drink?
0:09:13 > 0:09:15- Leche.- That's right.
0:09:15 > 0:09:20Leche. Leche is the Spanish word for milk and it can take up to three
0:09:20 > 0:09:24years for a mother sea lion to raise her baby sea lion.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27That's why you can see lots of different sizes of baby
0:09:27 > 0:09:32around the beach, from very small to quite big like this one here.
0:09:32 > 0:09:35The pups drink milk, but what do the adults eat?
0:09:35 > 0:09:38- Fish.- Yes, absolutely right.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40They go out to sea to go and catch fish.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Dasha, how can you tell it's the alpha male?
0:10:22 > 0:10:27The alpha male is very big and has the crest.
0:10:27 > 0:10:30The alpha male is the biggest and strongest male.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33He looks after a group of 20 to 25 females.
0:10:33 > 0:10:37He has that raised forehead to protect his head when gets into
0:10:37 > 0:10:43fights with other males, trying to look after that group of females.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54The fishermen and the boat propellers.
0:10:54 > 0:10:58Of course, the fishing lines can get caught in their skin and hurt them

0:11:02 > 0:11:03- and be injured.- Yes.
0:11:03 > 0:11:07- What about if they get ill? - We help them.- Oh, great.
0:11:07 > 0:11:13- How do you help them?- Protected areas on the sea and in the beach.
0:11:13 > 0:11:18That's great because they need both the beach to relax and stay cool and
0:11:18 > 0:11:21- have a great time and the sea to feed and go and catch fish.- Yeah.
0:11:21 > 0:11:25'I can see that some of the sea lions are tagged so they can keep
0:11:25 > 0:11:29'count of them and they can make sure there is plenty of food for
0:11:29 > 0:11:33'them to eat by stopping people fishing too much around the islands
0:11:33 > 0:11:36'and your dad helps to do all of that.'

0:12:24 > 0:12:27I wonder what sea lions would dream about?
0:12:27 > 0:12:33If they could do anything, what do you think they'd do?
0:12:33 > 0:12:37If a sea lion could do anything,
0:12:37 > 0:12:42they would go ice-skating.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46They would have a great time

0:15:31 > 0:15:35They have two very powerful flippers at the front which help them move
0:15:35 > 0:15:38through the water quickly and two flippers at the back
0:15:38 > 0:15:43which help them to steer. They can manoeuvre and move around.
