0:03:02 > 0:03:03A Shih Tzu.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06There are over 400 different breeds of dogs -

0:03:06 > 0:03:08from Dalmatian to Labradors.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11And Shih Tzus are one of the smallest breeds.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Their name actually means, "lion dog",

0:03:13 > 0:03:16but you've got nothing to worry about,

0:03:16 > 0:03:19because they're very cuddly, kind and caring dogs.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24Which is why, I think, Abbie loves little Kerry so much.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28What is Abbie's favourite thing about Kerry?

0:03:28 > 0:03:32- That she's fluffy.- She's fluffy. And she is super fluffy.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35She's so soft. Oh, she's gorgeous.

0:03:35 > 0:03:40Ferne, can you give us some furry facts about our new friend here?

0:03:42 > 0:03:46Any type of dog can be a therapy pet - big or small -

0:03:46 > 0:03:49as long as they are calm and friendly.

0:03:52 > 0:03:57Other types of animal can also be used as therapy pets.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Therapy pets help people in lots of different ways.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09Stroking a dog can help to cheer you up if you feel sad or unwell.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Or calm you down if you feel angry.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15Wonderful therapy pets like Kerry help all sorts of people -

0:04:15 > 0:04:16young and old.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23DOG BARKS

0:04:26 > 0:04:30Caring for Kerry is very important while she's making Abbie happy.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Of course, she gets lots of love and care from Belle.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36But there are still things we can do.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39What do you guys do to look after Kerry while she's here?

0:04:39 > 0:04:42- All sorts. Feed her.- Walk her.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44- Cuddle her.- And brush her.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Perfect. Can I help you look after her today?

0:04:47 > 0:04:49- BOTH: Yeah. - Oh, excellent.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52- So what do we need to do first? - Brush her.- Yeah.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55- Now, is there anyone else who'd like to help us?- Abbie.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Abbie can help us too. Perfect.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09- I think she's liking all this attention, isn't she?- Yeah.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11Yes, aren't you, Kerry?

0:05:11 > 0:05:15Brushing Kerry is one of Abbie's favourite things to do.

0:05:15 > 0:05:16Kerry's just had a haircut,

0:05:16 > 0:05:19but normally Shih Tzus have long, thick hair.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21They need to be brushed every day

0:05:21 > 0:05:24to make sure it doesn't get tangled or matted.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29She's certainly looking nice and tidy now.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32So what's next on our to-do list? Is it time for walkies?

0:05:32 > 0:05:37Not yet. We have to put out food and water for later.

0:05:37 > 0:05:38OK, come on.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45- So, is this where Kerry gets fed when she comes to stay?- Yeah.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47And what have we got here for her?

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Wet food, dry food and treats and water.

0:05:50 > 0:05:56- What do need to do now then? - Put the wet food into the bowl.- OK.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58Right, let's do that first then.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10What do you think? Does that look delicious?

0:06:10 > 0:06:12BOTH LAUGH

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Your dog needs a well-balanced diet to stay healthy,

0:06:15 > 0:06:18but Kerry only needs a wee bit of food as she's little.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21How much you feed your dog depends on things like

0:06:21 > 0:06:24how old they are, or how much exercise they get.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Remember not to give them too much.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29They can become overweight and that's not healthy.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32- Speaking of exercise, is it time for walkies?- Yeah.

0:06:32 > 0:06:37- Is there anything we need to do? - Fill the water bottle for Kerry.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42There we go. Marvellous.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Let's get this lovely little lid on.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48And don't you think this is a brilliant little travel bottle?

0:06:48 > 0:06:52It's great, isn't it? A little place for Kerry to drink from.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Perfect, isn't it? There you go - take hold of that.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58- Now, tell me it's time to go for walkies.- Yes.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Yes, I've been waiting for this.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04I know Abbie and Sean are going to want to come with us.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07I've got the lead here - let's go and get Kerry. Come on.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28Exercise is so important when caring for dogs like Kerry.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30They love to go for walks in the park

0:07:30 > 0:07:35but Shih Tzus only have little legs, so a shorter walk is usually fine.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37But that doesn't mean they're not fast.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Wait for me!

0:07:46 > 0:07:48Kerry!

0:07:52 > 0:07:55Abbie's come down to the park with Kerry.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58Kerry loves exploring all the different parts of the park.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02And Abbie loves the swings and the roundabout. Me?

0:08:02 > 0:08:04I'm interested in the pirate ship.

0:08:04 > 0:08:05Arr!

0:08:11 > 0:08:15Ahoy, me hearties! Kerry's having a great time down there

0:08:15 > 0:08:19playing with Abbie. And Abbie's having a fantastic time too.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21I think it's time for a treat.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Giving your dog a treat is a great way to show them

0:08:26 > 0:08:28how well they've been doing.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32- Now, I heard that Kerry could do a trick for a treat.- Yeah.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34- Will you do that for me?- Yeah.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Let's go one at a time.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39- Kerry.- Kerry.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41What's that...?

0:08:45 > 0:08:47Oh, well done.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Isn't she clever?

0:08:49 > 0:08:50Twirl.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59Wow!

0:08:59 > 0:09:03Well done, Kerry. That was awesome, wasn't it?

0:09:03 > 0:09:05Amazing. Well done.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07No crisp for you.

0:09:07 > 0:09:08CHILDREN LAUGH

0:09:08 > 0:09:11They're not for dogs - or strawberries.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16MY PET AND ME!

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Come on, Kerry, dinner time!

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Oh! Dinner time!

0:09:28 > 0:09:32- Mmm! Looks like she's enjoying that, doesn't it?- Yes.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35She's hungry after that walk.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Let's give you a wee wipe.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41There we go, let's clean you up. Good lass.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45Kerry's face needs washed every single day, just like ours.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47It can get dirty after eating

0:09:47 > 0:09:49and sometimes her eyes get a wee but teary.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53A napkin or wet cloth is perfect for cleaning them.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55I know something else that needs washed

0:09:55 > 0:09:58- after we've touched our pets. - Our hands.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00That's right. Shall we do that now?

0:10:11 > 0:10:14I am exhausted, and Abbie was too, by the looks of things.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19- Yeah, she's having a lie down. - That sounds like a very good idea.

0:10:19 > 0:10:20And look - so is Kerry.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Wonder what she's dreaming about?

0:10:24 > 0:10:29If Kerry could do anything in the world, what do you think she'd do?

0:10:31 > 0:10:37If Kerry the dog could do anything, she would wear a pink dress.

0:10:37 > 0:10:42With a big, curly black wig and flat shoes to dance in.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44And she would travel to America

0:10:44 > 0:10:48and dance with all her puppy pals to an Irish jig.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52And then she would win all of the medals.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01This is a very special room for Abbie to play in.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04As you can see, it's filled with stars, disco balls, bubbles,

0:11:04 > 0:11:06lights...

0:11:06 > 0:11:09And it's got this very clever mat here as well,

0:11:09 > 0:11:10which is very exciting.
