0:01:42 > 0:01:46The one that is white, that's Buzz.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48This is Buzz, and...

0:01:48 > 0:01:52- The one with no stripes is Woody. - And they're boys.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56Boy guinea pigs can be called boars and girls are called sows,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59just like big pigs. Do you think they look like pigs?

0:01:59 > 0:02:01- No!- They don't have these noses,

0:02:01 > 0:02:04- do they?- No! - THEY MAKE PIG GRUNTS

0:02:04 > 0:02:08- And they don't make that noise. - No, what noise do guinea pigs make?

0:02:08 > 0:02:10THEY SQUEAK

0:02:12 > 0:02:13I love guinea pigs.

0:02:13 > 0:02:18They're such chatterboxes and all of their noises mean different things.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22Their eyes are on the very sides of their head, aren't they?

0:02:22 > 0:02:25- Yeah, like this.- If they see something scary, what can they do?

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Scurry, scurry, scurry!

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Guinea pigs are prey animals, which means lots of other animals

0:02:34 > 0:02:38want to eat them and so it's very important to have good hearing and

0:02:38 > 0:02:42good eyesight to keep themselves safe. Rory, can you tell us

0:02:42 > 0:02:45some more furry facts about our guinea pig friends?

0:02:45 > 0:02:46Of course, Ferne.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Guinea pigs aren't pigs at all.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53They're actually rodents like mice and rats.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Guinea pigs often take lots of short naps throughout the day

0:02:58 > 0:03:01and night instead of sleeping for a long time like we do.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Guinea pigs like to live with at least one other guinea pig.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Guinea pig babies are called pups.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14CHILDREN: Care time!

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Guinea pigs need lots of care,

0:03:20 > 0:03:24so what do we have to do to look after Buzz and Woody?

0:03:24 > 0:03:28We have to clean the cage out and look after them properly.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31And clean all the dirty stuff that is in their cage.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35- That sounds good, so what do we do first?- We clean all the hay out.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39- OK, and shall we take out their food bowl?- Yes.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Good job.

0:03:42 > 0:03:47- And it's important to empty out the food every day.- Yes.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51It can make them a bit ill if they eat mouldy food and stale food.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54- Shall we get clearing? - Yeah, let's do it!

0:03:56 > 0:03:59- This is fun! - FERNE LAUGHS

0:03:59 > 0:04:02How many times do you clean out the guinea pigs every week?

0:04:02 > 0:04:07- One.- So you clean them out completely about once a week.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10But then, every day, you give them some fresh food and water

0:04:10 > 0:04:13and that keeps guinea pigs happy and healthy.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17- How about Malachi sweeps the wood shavings?- Yeah.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Good job.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25- I'm helping Malachi. - The two of you are doing so well.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29- There's lots of wood shavings, isn't there?- Yeah!

0:04:29 > 0:04:31We have to clean it all up.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Definitely. That is perfect.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Guinea pigs do like a nice, clean hutch,

0:04:38 > 0:04:40so as well as the weekly clean,

0:04:40 > 0:04:44you should scoop out their poo every day so it doesn't make a mess.

0:04:44 > 0:04:49- We can't have that, can we? - No, we can't have mess or smell.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51- Ugh!- Ew!

0:04:51 > 0:04:54- Are we all done?- Yeah! - Brilliant, pass me those.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58- I'll put them away.- Now we'll put the clean stuff in.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Would you like to pass me some newspaper? I'll do this side.

0:05:02 > 0:05:03Thank you very much.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07- Malachi, do you want to do the last bit?- Yeah.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Great job. All done.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Now we have to put the sawdust in.

0:05:12 > 0:05:13Nice big handfuls.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17You have to make sure that you have the right wood shavings

0:05:17 > 0:05:21for your guinea pigs so there's not too much dust or anything.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24We have to make sure everything is covered.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27- Shall we put the hay in their bedroom?- Yeah.- OK.

0:05:27 > 0:05:28I can't exactly reach it.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31It's all right, if you'd like to pass me some hay,

0:05:31 > 0:05:32I'll put it in here.

0:05:32 > 0:05:37- This is very fun.- I think we're forgetting something!- Food!

0:05:37 > 0:05:38That's right!

0:05:38 > 0:05:42Shall we put a little bit of this hay on the other side

0:05:42 > 0:05:45so they can eat it? It's very good for their teeth.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Guinea pig pellets like this are very good for them.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Because it's full of vitamins.

0:05:50 > 0:05:56And I think they deserve some fresh treats! Some carrot and kale.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Guinea pigs need fresh water every day, don't they?

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Lots of fresh water for them.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08- Are we all done?- Yes.

0:06:11 > 0:06:16Look, they're chomping away at their yummy food. Chomp, chomp, chomp.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19And I think we've got two very happy guinea pigs.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22DOG BARKS

0:06:26 > 0:06:28Guinea pigs are very social animals and they

0:06:28 > 0:06:32just love to play with other guinea pigs and humans.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35- Is it cuddle time now?- Yeah. - OK, I'll go get them.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39You have to be very careful when you pick up guinea pigs.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41You should be very, very calm and quiet

0:06:41 > 0:06:44and don't approach them from above

0:06:44 > 0:06:46or they might think that you're a predator.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49So, instead...

0:06:49 > 0:06:51you scoop them up very gently

0:06:51 > 0:06:57and hold them just under their bottoms and just under their arms.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01And you bring them in close so they feel nice and secure.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04And then you can move with them.

0:07:04 > 0:07:05Here comes Buzz!

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Do you want to stroke Buzz, Janina?

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Here's Woody! Yeah!

0:07:15 > 0:07:19Mia, do you want to let him lie down so he can be comfortable? Exactly.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22It's important that you hold your guinea pigs gently,

0:07:22 > 0:07:25not too tight, or they might get a fright.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28They're very soft, aren't they? And they're warm.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30Yes, they're really soft.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34- Do you like their noses? - Yeah, they're very tickly.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36Tickle, tickle, tickle.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39I've got a lovely bowl of guinea pig goodies here.

0:07:39 > 0:07:44So how about I hide these in there and you cover their eyes

0:07:44 > 0:07:47so they can't see? OK? No peeking, guinea pigs!

0:07:47 > 0:07:52- Don't look!- Don't look, don't look! - You can't have cheating guinea pigs!

0:07:55 > 0:07:59These vegetable buttons can be a nice guinea pig treat

0:07:59 > 0:08:01as part of a balanced diet.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- I think that's enough, do you?- Yeah.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Come on, Woody. Go find your treats!

0:08:11 > 0:08:13Go on!

0:08:13 > 0:08:15Come on, Buzz! Get set...

0:08:15 > 0:08:17go!

0:08:17 > 0:08:23- Who do you think will be the best at finding all the treaties?- Woody!

0:08:23 > 0:08:29- I think it's Buzz.- I think it's Woody. Yeah!- Buzz got it.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35- They found one!- That was great fun!

0:08:35 > 0:08:38- I think they really liked it, do you?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42- What we have to do after we hold the guinea pigs?- Wash our hands!

0:08:42 > 0:08:45- Shall we go wash our hands? - Yeah.- Come on.

0:08:50 > 0:08:55- Buzz and Woody love being outside in their run, don't they, Mia?- Yeah.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Why do they like being outside?

0:08:57 > 0:09:02Because they get lots of exercise and some food and they get to play.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04That's right.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07If Buzz and Woody could go on any outdoor adventure,

0:09:07 > 0:09:09what do you think they would do?

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Hmm.

0:09:11 > 0:09:17If Buzz and Woody could do anything, they would grow butterfly wings.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21Their wings would be blue, purple, and pink.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25They would fly to the park and meet their friends -

0:09:25 > 0:09:29the bee, and the ladybirds, and the caterpillars.

0:09:29 > 0:09:36Then they would dance in the flowers and have a big bug party.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52We've come to the local pet shop to get the guinea pigs' claws trimmed.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55They need to come here every couple of months.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59There are also lots of other pets waiting for new homes.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05This is Ken.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09He owns the pet shop and is going to cut Buzz and Woody's claws.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11- Hi, Ken.- Hi. Morning, girls.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13It's nice to see Buzz and Woody again.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15Anything we can do to help?

0:10:15 > 0:10:17Look after that little guinea pig

0:10:17 > 0:10:21- and I'll trim the nails on this one. - Will it hurt them?

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Not at all. It's like clipping your nails.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26There's no harm done to the guinea pigs.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30Let's have a little go at this one, shall we?

0:10:30 > 0:10:33Oh! There's one. And we'll look for this one. And...

0:10:33 > 0:10:37Another one. Very, very gently.

0:10:37 > 0:10:38There it goes.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40Guinea pigs have funny feet.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42They have different numbers of toes.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45How many toes are on the front foot?

0:10:45 > 0:10:49- On the front foot, as you can see, there are four.- Four toes!

0:10:49 > 0:10:52And if we turn him around, we can see his back toes.

0:10:52 > 0:10:59- The back toes. And how many have we got there?- Three.- One, two, three.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02So four toes on the front and three toes on the back.

0:11:02 > 0:11:07- All done. There we go. Well done, Buzz. Didn't he do well?- Yeah.

0:11:07 > 0:11:12- Stroke him, that's it. He likes that. - Good job. Your turn, Woody.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18There we go. We'll take a little bit off this curly one here.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20By clipping the guinea pigs' nails,

0:11:20 > 0:11:24- it makes it easier for them to move and walk around.- Absolutely.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27They feel better once we've had their nails clipped.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30And the last one...

0:11:38 > 0:11:40And I've got the thing for you two here,

0:11:40 > 0:11:43which you can take back to nursery for them.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Here we go, take that back.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48That's to help their teeth. It's a mineral block.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50And that, they love playing in these.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53They run in and out of them and hide in them.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56You can take those back to nursery for Buzz and Woody.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00- They'll love that.- Thank you very much, Ken. They're brilliant!

0:12:08 > 0:12:12I'm so glad that they like their presents. They really deserve it.
