0:01:39 > 0:01:42Today, I'm in Bristol to meet Daisy and her mum, Donna.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44I wonder what their pet is.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Let's go find out.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Hi, Ferne, we're over here.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02- Hello, Daisy.- Hello.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04- And you must be Donna? - Yes, hi, Ferne.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08Who's this? Is this your pony? He is, isn't he?

0:02:08 > 0:02:10He's very nice.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Daisy! Is this his name?

0:02:13 > 0:02:18- Yes!- Is this Frankie? This is Frankie, your pony.- Yeah!

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Wow! I love ponies.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25- Daisy communicates using sign language.- There you go!

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Frankie and his neighbour here are ponies.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31And that is the name of a type of a small horse.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34You can tell the difference quite easily

0:02:34 > 0:02:37because ponies' manes and tails are thicker.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41Their necks are thicker, and their faces and legs are shorter.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45'Daisy doesn't actually own Frankie, he and the other ponies

0:02:45 > 0:02:47'are part of a riding school

0:02:47 > 0:02:50'that allows everyone to come and ride on a pony.'

0:02:50 > 0:02:53- How old is Frankie? - He's actually 16.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57- Do you help look after Frankie? - Yes, she does.- Brilliant.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01- How long has she been looking after him for?- For a year now.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05- She rides him every Thursday morning for half an hour.- That is fantastic.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09And it's really good exercise for Frankie, too. Ponies love exercise.

0:03:09 > 0:03:15Daisy, I love his pink nose and he's got lovely long eyelashes, as well.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18And isn't this great because, with the layout of the stables,

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Frankie can have a look about and all his friends are here.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Cos horses are very curious and so are ponies.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28And they love to have a good look at what's going on.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Ponies are interesting for all sorts of reasons.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36Rory, can you tell us some more pony facts about our new friend here?

0:03:36 > 0:03:39Of course, Ferne.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43Ponies are herbivores. That means they only eat plants.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Boy ponies are called stallions.

0:03:48 > 0:03:53Girl ponies are called mares and baby ponies are called foals.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Ponies like to live in groups.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00A group of horses or ponies is called a herd.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Ponies can sometimes live up to 30 years or more!

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Pets can be cared for in all sorts of ways.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19Looking after a pony can be very rewarding and also great fun.

0:04:19 > 0:04:25Daisy and I get to watch Toni, who looks after Frankie, clean his feet.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29- Do you know what their feet are? - Yeah.- They're hooves, aren't they?

0:04:29 > 0:04:33That's what ponies and horses' feet are called, hooves.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Do you think his feet are going to be very clean?

0:04:37 > 0:04:41Frankie isn't wearing shoes but some horses wear shoes

0:04:41 > 0:04:45to protect their feet when they walk on hard surfaces like roads.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48But he's OK because he walks in a paddock and around a field

0:04:48 > 0:04:52and in a forest, so the ground tends to be quite soft.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53So he doesn't need shoes.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Good job, Daisy!

0:04:55 > 0:05:00His feet are looking very clean, aren't they? How about we brush him?

0:05:03 > 0:05:07Make sure he's nice and soft and get rid of all the old hair.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09- I think he likes this.- Yeah.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Thank you, Toni, for letting us help you.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Should we give Frankie some food?

0:05:15 > 0:05:16Yes. Let's go.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21Look at all of this, it's yummy.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26These pellets are perfect for ponies.

0:05:26 > 0:05:32They're full of vitamins, soya, grains and even some oats.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36How about some apple? Daisy, shall we put some apple in as a treat?

0:05:36 > 0:05:40Yeah. And what about some carrot?

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Carrot.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Perfect.

0:05:44 > 0:05:49This looks yummy, doesn't it? A nice little bit of food.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53Yum, yum, yum. And we can give this to Frankie later.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- You ready?- Yeah!- Yeah.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01- You ready? Shall we clean?- Yeah.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Get rid of all of this.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06'Time to clean out Frankie's stall.'

0:06:06 > 0:06:09- Is it good? Is that all right?- Yeah.

0:06:17 > 0:06:23- Right, Daisy. Do you want to put all of this on the floor?- Yeah.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25How about here?

0:06:25 > 0:06:26Just like that.

0:06:26 > 0:06:27FERNE LAUGHS

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Good job.

0:06:32 > 0:06:37And it's nice, fresh, clean wood chippings for Frankie, isn't it?

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Good for his bed, aren't they?

0:06:41 > 0:06:44You do that and I'll get this ready.

0:06:49 > 0:06:50It's all clean, isn't it?

0:06:53 > 0:06:55Yeah, this is the horse's house.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59- It's almost finished, shall we get his food?- Yeah.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Yeah, we'll get his food and water.

0:07:03 > 0:07:04Look at that!

0:07:07 > 0:07:08Wow!

0:07:12 > 0:07:17It's important for ponies to nibble all the time. It's called grazing.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05'it's important to wash your hands, isn't it, Daisy?'

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Playtime with your pets is really important

0:08:14 > 0:08:17and ponies like Frankie need plenty of exercise.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21He's getting lots in his manege, which is similar to a paddock.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Paddocks are a nice big fenced-off areas

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Frankie's really good at it

0:08:41 > 0:08:44and it helps him to control his walk in a circle

0:08:44 > 0:08:48but also control the speed at which he walks and runs.
