0:02:30 > 0:02:33- Is she coming to say hello?- Hello.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Maria will ask Jess and Toby some questions

0:02:39 > 0:02:42to work out which pet is best suited for them.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45It's important to choose a suitable pet so they can get

0:02:45 > 0:02:49the best care, and you and your new pet are happy.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Can you tell me why you would like a pet?

0:02:51 > 0:02:57So we've got something to be entertained by and to look after.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00OK. And why would you like a pet?

0:03:00 > 0:03:02So you can feed them.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04So you can feed it? Oh, very good.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Can you tell me a bit about your home?

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Do you have a big garden?

0:03:09 > 0:03:12- Yes.- Yes.- Oh, and what's in your garden?

0:03:12 > 0:03:14- Grass.- Lots of grass.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16- And dandelions. - Grass and dandelions.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Oh, I think I might have the pet in mind for you then.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24Jess, how much time would you be able to give your new pet?

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Before, after school and the weekends.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Oh, I think that would be pretty good.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32So Mum and Dad could look after them in the daytime,

0:03:32 > 0:03:35and you can help in the afternoons and evenings?

0:03:35 > 0:03:36- Yes.- Fabulous.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39The animals I think would suit you are guinea pigs

0:03:39 > 0:03:44cos guinea pigs can live with two, to keep them company,

0:03:44 > 0:03:47so when you're at school they're not bored or sad on their own.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51Also they absolutely love grass and they love dandelions,

0:03:51 > 0:03:55so your home is going to be perfect for guinea pigs.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57- What do you think?- Yes!- Yes.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01That's great. Are you ready to give them a lifelong home

0:04:01 > 0:04:03and look after them really well?

0:04:03 > 0:04:05- Yes.- Yes.- That's brilliant.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Rory, can you tell us more facts about animal shelters

0:04:08 > 0:04:10like this one?

0:04:10 > 0:04:12Of course, Ferne.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17Many cats and dogs in shelters are often given up by people

0:04:17 > 0:04:19who can't take care of them,

0:04:19 > 0:04:22so lots of the pets will already be house-trained.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29It's not just cats and dogs that can be adopted.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Some have smaller animals like rabbits,

0:04:32 > 0:04:33hamsters,

0:04:33 > 0:04:34rats,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36and guinea pigs.

0:04:38 > 0:04:42If you would love to have a pet but don't have time to look after one,

0:04:42 > 0:04:45why not visit with an adult, an animal shelter.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48You'll not only meet adorable animals,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50but have lots of fun, too.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56DOG BARKS

0:04:56 > 0:04:58GUINEA PIG SQUEAKS

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Now that we decided what pet is best, we've come to the guinea pig

0:05:02 > 0:05:06and rabbit garden to learn a bit more about them.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10- I think we should make a nice little welcome treat. Do you?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14- What are we going to make? - Guinea pig hay kebabs.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17That sounds great. How do we do that?

0:05:17 > 0:05:20We get the toilet roll,

0:05:20 > 0:05:24and then we get some straw and pop it in.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26- And put some hay in?- Yeah.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Why do we use hay?

0:05:29 > 0:05:31So then they can eat it.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35- It's good for them.- Yeah. - Guinea pigs love to chew on hay

0:05:35 > 0:05:38and it stops their teeth growing too long.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Then we get a stick and put it through the middle.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43One. Yum, yum, yum.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47- How's that?- It's good.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Two. That is looking tasty.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54What do you think the guinea pigs will think of these kebabs?

0:05:54 > 0:05:57- They'll think it's good. - Will they be happy?

0:05:57 > 0:06:01- Yes.- Yes.- Now that we have lovely welcome home treats,

0:06:01 > 0:06:03shall we prepare their home?

0:06:03 > 0:06:05- Yeah!- Yeah.- Let's go.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13- This is our new guinea pig home. - It is perfect.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17But it needs a bit of getting ready. What do we do first?

0:06:17 > 0:06:21- Put the hay in.- Loads of hay. Why?

0:06:21 > 0:06:24- So then they can be comfy. - And eat it.

0:06:27 > 0:06:28Shaky, shaky, shaky.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32Your garden is perfect for a hutch this size, isn't it?

0:06:32 > 0:06:35And it's a great place for guinea pigs to eat and sleep.

0:06:35 > 0:06:41We do have a run so they can run about and do some exercise.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46And they're safe from bigger animals like foxes or other predators.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49I think this is enough hay. What's next?

0:06:49 > 0:06:51- The food.- OK.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53What have we got here for them?

0:06:53 > 0:06:56- Guinea pig pellets.- Oh, yummy.

0:06:56 > 0:07:01These pellets are perfect for guinea pigs cos it gives extra vitamins.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03We'll put it...

0:07:03 > 0:07:05- There.- ..here.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Fabulous. And what's next?

0:07:08 > 0:07:10It's the toys and huts.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13This goes in the far back corner.

0:07:13 > 0:07:14We'll put this here.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Yeah, put this here.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20- We'll hide some treats in. - Oh, lovely.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24It can be nice to give guinea pigs fresh vegetables as a treat

0:07:24 > 0:07:27and it's good for them cos it gives them vitamin C.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30We need to remember where we put it,

0:07:30 > 0:07:33and later you can see if the guinea pigs have found it,

0:07:33 > 0:07:36and if they haven't, we take it out so it doesn't go rotten.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40I think we're almost done. All we need is a bottle.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41For water.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49Perfect! Do you know what this hutch needs?

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Yes, it needs guinea pigs.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54It needs guinea pigs. Shall we go collect them?

0:08:00 > 0:08:02My Pets and Me!

0:08:03 > 0:08:04GUINEA PIG SQUEAKS

0:08:04 > 0:08:08These guinea pigs have homes. We're holding them for practice.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12- Are you excited to choose yours? - Yeah.- We're really excited.

0:08:12 > 0:08:17It's going to be so much fun. If your guinea pigs could do anything,

0:08:17 > 0:08:19what do you think they would do?

0:08:19 > 0:08:20DRUMROLL

0:08:20 > 0:08:25If our new pets could do anything, they would be pirates.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29They would sail the seven seas in their pirate ship,

0:08:29 > 0:08:32The Black Whiskers, and they would hunt for treasure.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36They would find a treasure chest full of guinea pig food

0:08:36 > 0:08:39and they would go to the middle of the ocean

0:08:39 > 0:08:43and sink to the bottom and bury it so nobody could ever find it.

0:08:45 > 0:08:46Ooh-arrr, me hearties!

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Can Jess and Toby give them other names?

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Definitely. When they come, they've got a name to make sure
