0:02:24 > 0:02:28It's very important to regularly handle your gerbils,

0:02:28 > 0:02:32but don't force them if they don't like it. When you handle them,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35be careful and gentle, so they don't get scared.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37What's the best way to pick them up?

0:02:37 > 0:02:42- With both hands.- Yeah, both your hands together, underneath them.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46- Is there anything else we need to do when we're holding them?- Sit down.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49That's right, so they feel safe and close to the ground.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Oh, hello!

0:03:20 > 0:03:26They are gorgeous. What amazing pets! How often do you take them out?

0:03:26 > 0:03:32- Once a day.- What do you play with them?- I like to cuddle them.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34What do you love most about them?

0:03:34 > 0:03:39- They make a mess out of their bedding.- Do they kick it all out?

0:03:39 > 0:03:45- Yeah.- Who cleans it up? - Mum and Dad.- Not you?- No!- Oh!

0:03:45 > 0:03:49- So they're messy AND cuddly?- Yeah. - That's a fun combination!

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Leah, your gerbils are very, very cute.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56Ferne, could you give us some fun facts about our new furry friends?

0:03:56 > 0:03:59Of course, Rory.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03In the wild, there are lots of different types of gerbil and they

0:04:03 > 0:04:08come in lots of different colours, like black, brown and white.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14Wild gerbils live in burrows and dig long tunnel mazes.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18They like to build homes with lots of different rooms

0:04:18 > 0:04:20for sleeping and storing food.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Gerbils like to forage for their food.

0:04:25 > 0:04:31They need a balanced diet of seeds, veggies, fruit and grasses.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43Gerbils are very social animals and enjoy company.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47They can make great pets, but need lots of care and attention.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51- How do you look after your gerbils? - I feed them and give them water

0:04:51 > 0:04:55and make sure their home is nice and clean.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Their home has a special name, doesn't it?

0:04:58 > 0:05:02- Gerbilarium. - Isn't that a funny name?- Yeah!

0:05:02 > 0:05:05It's a great word and this is a cool thing, isn't it?

0:05:05 > 0:05:10- It's like a tank down here and a cage up here.- Yeah.- Very unusual.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14- How often do you need to clean them out?- Once a week.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17- Is today a cleaning day? - Yeah.- Thought you might say that!

0:05:17 > 0:05:21- What do we have to do first? - Take the gerbils out.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23Let's do that, then.

0:05:25 > 0:05:26There's one.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32There you go, and there's two.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Get this big bin bag...

0:05:35 > 0:05:37Let's get this bedding out.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45I wish they could kick it out to us, so we could get it.

0:05:45 > 0:05:50- That's your favourite thing, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Right, last little bit.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56We've taken all the old stuff out, what do we need to do next?

0:05:56 > 0:06:03- Put all the messy stuff in.- OK. This is going to be fun!- Yup.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11- Sweep it around.- Yup, nearly done.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16- Excellent.- Think the gerbils are having fun in there?

0:06:16 > 0:06:20I think they are! OK, guys? One more thing we need to do.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Put some of the old bedding in, then they'll know it's home,

0:06:24 > 0:06:26because it'll smell familiar.

0:06:28 > 0:06:29Just a little bit there.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Wild gerbils live in burrows they dig themselves,

0:06:32 > 0:06:36so if you have pet gerbils, they need to be able to do that, too.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41- I think Elsa and Olaf will love all this bedding, don't you?- Yeah.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45I'm also pleased to see that your gerbilarium is nice and big,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48so they have lots of space to exercise.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52- Shall we put the toys back in?- Yeah. - OK, you pass them over to me.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57Bury them in here, hide them, so they get excited when they find them.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01- Now, this isn't a toy, what's this for?- To cut their claws.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Their claws keep growing all their lives,

0:07:04 > 0:07:07just like our nails, and a rough stone like this

0:07:07 > 0:07:11means they can rub them down so they're not too long, perfect!

0:07:11 > 0:07:14- Is that everything done?- No. - What do we need to do?

0:07:14 > 0:07:17We need new food and water.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21- Good thinking, we should do that now, shouldn't we?- Yeah.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36OK, put the water bottles in.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Right, old food.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Clear the old stuff.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46And let's get the new food.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51There you go. What we've got here is gerbil muesli.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55It's special gerbil food made up of different seeds and nuts.

0:07:55 > 0:08:01- All the food's in now, there's one thing missing.- The gerbils?- Yeah!

0:08:08 > 0:08:12- Think they like it?- Yeah. - Straight in to explore!

0:08:14 > 0:08:17Olaf, always thinking with your stomach!

0:08:17 > 0:08:20RORY CHUCKLES

0:08:20 > 0:08:25- Oh, look, Elsa's eating as well. What do we need to do now?- Wash our hands.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28Let's go!

0:08:36 > 0:08:39Elsa and Olaf are munching on some sunflower seeds

0:08:39 > 0:08:43and I think we deserve a treat, too. What have we got here?

0:08:43 > 0:08:47- Sunflower seed cakes. - They look delicious.

0:08:47 > 0:08:52- We'll enjoy these as much as Elsa and Olaf enjoy their seeds!- Yeah.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54Now, if Elsa and Olaf could do anything,

0:08:54 > 0:08:56what do you think they'd do?

0:08:59 > 0:09:04If my pets could do anything, they'd be magic gymnasts.

0:09:04 > 0:09:09They would wear blue leotards and blue tutus,

0:09:09 > 0:09:14and they could hang upside down by their tails.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18And they could pull a rabbit out of a hat.

0:09:18 > 0:09:24Then they would take a bow and everybody would clap and cheer.

0:09:31 > 0:09:36- Oh!- We are like big gerbils in these tunnels!

0:09:36 > 0:09:39We are, aren't we? It's loads of fun, but why are we

0:09:39 > 0:09:42playing outside in the garden? The gerbils are inside.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45It's a clue to what we are going to do.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49What are we going to do? Not let them out in the garden?

0:09:49 > 0:09:54- We're going to make a special playpark for them.- Great idea!

0:09:54 > 0:09:55Let's go!

0:09:57 > 0:10:01LEAH GIGGLES

0:10:01 > 0:10:05We've got all our toys, but we should put down some bedding and set up

0:10:05 > 0:10:10- the pen so they're safe, right? - Yeah.- Right, let's pop that out.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15There we go. Looks cool.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19If I pour this bedding in, will you spread it all around?

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Right, you start spreading it around.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32OK, that's looking nice and safe.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Which of the toys do you want to put in first?

0:10:35 > 0:10:39- The wheel. - You pop it in first, then.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42If you're making your own gerbil playpark at home,

0:10:42 > 0:10:46it's really important that all the toys are gerbil safe,

0:10:46 > 0:10:50so make sure everything they have is OK for them to chew on.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54- What next?- The hut.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58- The seesaw.- And then you're going to put the swing in?

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- Yeah.- Right, I'll put the climbing frame in.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05- And we've got a few tubes left, don't we?- Yeah.- We'll put all these in.

0:11:05 > 0:11:09They'll love running through these and hiding in them!

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- Anything else they like to do with these?- Chew them!

0:11:12 > 0:11:15- Good for their teeth, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Right, what do we need to do then?

0:12:02 > 0:12:07Hello, Olaf. Hello. Oh, the climbing frame, look, you were right!

0:12:07 > 0:12:13Olaf was the first on. You're very adventurous! You are!
