0:01:11 > 0:01:14Today we're in Dorset to visit Harry and his degus.

0:01:14 > 0:01:18I love degus, so I can't wait to meet them. Let's go.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24- Hi, Ferne.- Hi, Harry.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26- And you must be Mum, hello.- Hi.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30- Do you want to come in and see my awesome degus?- I would love to.

0:01:30 > 0:01:31Come on, let's go!

0:01:39 > 0:01:42- So, these are your degus? - Yeah.

0:01:42 > 0:01:43Hi, degus.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45- How many do you have?- Three.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47What are their names?

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Their names are Thomas, Donald and Rexy.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52- And are they boys or girls?- Boys.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54- All of them are boys?- Yeah.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57- How long have you had them? - Two years.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01- I used to have degus.- Really? - But I used to call them flufflumps.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04So I never say degus, I always say flufflumps.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Hello, you.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10- I like their orange teeth. They're funny, aren't they?- Yeah.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14- Where did you get your degus? - I got them from a rescue centre.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18Oh, that's lovely, isn't it? You're giving them a second home.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22- Do you know how old they are?- I think they're going to be three this year.

0:02:22 > 0:02:27- Donald, the big one, he's the dad. - Really? He's their daddy?- Yeah, yeah.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31- Oh, that's lovely. So, you have a little degu family here?- Yeah.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35It's great that you have a little group because degus live in groups

0:02:35 > 0:02:39in the wild, so they prefer to be around their friends.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43- What's your favourite thing about having degus?- They're very playful.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45- They are. They're clever too.- Yeah.

0:02:45 > 0:02:50- Should we see if any of them want to come out for a cuddle?- Yeah.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55Make sure you don't fall out there, babies.

0:02:55 > 0:02:56Hello, you.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03You're doing a really good job, Harry, trying to pick them up.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06When you pick up a degu, you never pick them up from the top or else

0:03:06 > 0:03:11they get a fright. So you either wait for them to walk onto you,

0:03:11 > 0:03:15like what Harry's doing, or else you scoop them up very gently underneath.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19This one seems happier just to have a sniff about, doesn't he?

0:03:19 > 0:03:20They're so fast.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23Hi.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28They certainly are very interesting and funny to watch.

0:03:28 > 0:03:33Rory, can you tell us some more facts about these furry little rodents?

0:03:33 > 0:03:34Of course, Ferne.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36One.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40Male degus are called bucks and females are called does.

0:03:42 > 0:03:43Two.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Degus don't like to be too hot,

0:03:45 > 0:03:49so they have big ears to help get rid of any extra heat

0:03:49 > 0:03:51from their bodies to cool them down.

0:03:52 > 0:03:53Three.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57Degus love working together in a team to do things like dig

0:03:57 > 0:03:59and make their homes.

0:04:00 > 0:04:01Four.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05Degus are sometimes called trumpet-tailed rats because they

0:04:05 > 0:04:08have a fluffy tuft of fur at the end of their tail.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Toot-toot!

0:04:13 > 0:04:15- WOOF - Care time.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Oh, big stretch. Big stretch.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25Degus are fantastic, interesting little creatures.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29But, like all pets, they need careful looking after.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33So, Harry, what do we have to do to look after your flufflumps?

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- We have to clean them out once a week...- Ooh.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- ..change their water once a day... - OK.- ..and feed them once a day.

0:04:40 > 0:04:45- Right, well, shall we start with cleaning them out?- Yes, please.- OK.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51- Let's take the big one out first. - OK.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Harry's degus are nice and safe down at the bottom,

0:04:55 > 0:04:57while we clean out the top.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00They really have been chewing on that, haven't they?

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Yeah, they've gnawed into it to sharpen their teeth.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07And to keep them not growing too long because they keep growing.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11- They can actually get ill if their teeth get too big...- Yeah.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14..so your sticks are perfect for your degus.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18Degus need a big metal cage

0:05:18 > 0:05:22with lots of space to run around and play and climb and dig.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26We take everything out

0:05:26 > 0:05:29and throw away all the old hay...

0:05:29 > 0:05:30and dirty stuff.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36Then we clean the cage.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40It's important to use a spray that's safe for small animals

0:05:40 > 0:05:42so they don't get sick.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45We put in clean woodshavings.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52- Good job, Harry.- I think that's about enough now.- OK.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53If they have lots of it,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56they can have a good dig around in it, can't they?

0:05:56 > 0:06:00- Yeah, and bury their food. - Lucky degus.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02We put in fresh hay.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06- Degus like chewing their hay too, don't they?- Yeah.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08And some new egg boxes

0:06:08 > 0:06:10and gobble boxes,

0:06:10 > 0:06:13and branches for them to chew on.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18These are great.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21- These are from my apple tree. - Oh, lovely. Do we have enough?

0:06:21 > 0:06:23- Yeah.- OK.

0:06:29 > 0:06:30Yeah, that looks good.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34- Shall we get started on the bottom? - No, I did that one yesterday.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38- Brilliant! Well, shall we get these gloves off?- Yeah.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Rah! OK, what's next?

0:06:41 > 0:06:45- We need to give them food and water. - OK, shall we start with food?

0:06:45 > 0:06:47- Yeah.- Lovely.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51- This is great degu food, isn't it? - Mhm.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54We've got bits of corn in here for treats.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57We've got some degu pellets. We've got some grass,

0:06:57 > 0:07:04which is great for their teeth, and some seeds and even some dried fruit.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06- Shall we fill up their bottle?- Yeah.

0:07:06 > 0:07:11They've even chewed this. Is there anything they don't chew?

0:07:11 > 0:07:14- Um, I don't think so.- No. Come on.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Good.

0:07:22 > 0:07:23Here you go, degus.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29- Shall we let them in, Harry?- Yeah. - See what they think?

0:07:34 > 0:07:36Go on, degus.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Look at your house.

0:07:38 > 0:07:39Yes!

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Yes, he's up there and he's got the corn.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- Go on, Thomas.- Over here!

0:07:47 > 0:07:50- Here we go, come on. - He's smelling stuff.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Hello.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Look at your nice clean house.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58He's found his food.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06What do you think the degus think of their nice clean house?

0:08:06 > 0:08:10They're thinking, "Ooh, I must run about in this, I must explore,

0:08:10 > 0:08:16- I must find new bowls of food." - I think they love it.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21My pet and me!

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- What degu is this, Harry? - It's Rexy.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Why did you name him Rexy?

0:08:29 > 0:08:32Because he's kind of like a T-Rex.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36- How?- Because he just stomps around

0:08:36 > 0:08:39and he's really adventurous, like a T-Rex.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- Oh, OK. Degus are very curious, aren't they?- Yeah.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45- And they're super clever.- Yeah.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49If your super fast degus could get up to anything...

0:08:49 > 0:08:51what do you think they would do?

0:08:51 > 0:08:54DRUMROLL

0:08:54 > 0:08:58If my pets could do anything, they would swim across the ocean.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00They would meet a giant squid...

0:09:00 > 0:09:03an electric eel...

0:09:03 > 0:09:06and a sea snake.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10And they would swim all the way to Chile,

0:09:10 > 0:09:12which is where degus come from.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16And they would build a giant burrow in the sand.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26Harry, what is your favourite thing to do with your degus?

0:09:26 > 0:09:31- Them having their sand bath. - Shall we give them one now?- Yeah.- OK.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36Sand bath's coming.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Ooh.

0:09:41 > 0:09:42Whoa!

0:09:45 > 0:09:47Degus love sand baths.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50It helps to keep their fur from getting too oily

0:09:50 > 0:09:52and keeps them healthy.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56If you could take your degus anywhere, where would you take them?

0:09:56 > 0:10:00- To the beach.- Why?- Because they love having sand baths.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02- They do, don't they?- Yeah.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06- Why don't we make a beach here? - Exactly, we can make one here.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- Shall we do that?- Yeah.- OK. Hang on, degus.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Degus need to have special sand called degu dust.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35- How about some deckchairs? - That's good.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37We've got three.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Just enough for the degus.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42I know what's going to make this really special...

0:10:42 > 0:10:45- beach huts!- Cool!

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- Do you think they'll like them?- Yeah.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Right, Harry, we need to make this safe.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Yeah, let's get their run.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01Shall we hide some bits of broccoli around the beach?

0:11:01 > 0:11:02That's a nice idea.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10In the umbrella garden. What about in a deckchair?

0:11:10 > 0:11:14- Yeah. In a house? - Yep, I'll get that.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- Now let's get the degus. - Yeah, come on.
