0:01:45 > 0:01:48Originally, they came from the Highlands

0:01:48 > 0:01:51and the Islands of Scotland, but nowadays,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Come on, I'll show you the other two.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09Show me the other two, your favourite ones, let's go.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11MUSIC PLAYS

0:02:21 > 0:02:25Hello. Who are these, Katie? They are beautiful.

0:02:25 > 0:02:26Riona and Isla.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29They're my favourite Highland cow.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32So, the big one is Isla, the little one is Riona.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36You've got two amazing white Highland cows. They're gorgeous.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39I can see why they're your favourite. What age is Riona?

0:02:39 > 0:02:46- Five weeks old.- She's tiny. That's really young, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Isla's the mummy and Riona is her calf.

0:02:49 > 0:02:55Wonderful. Hello. They're really hairy, aren't they?

0:02:55 > 0:03:00- Katie, do you think Isla can see with all that hair on her face?- Yes.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04- Sometime my daddy brushes her. - Brushes the cows? Do they like it?

0:03:04 > 0:03:10- Yes.- What a lucky cow. And they've got nice long hairy coats, too.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14They're very good because it keeps them nice and warm, but in the

0:03:14 > 0:03:18summer, the hair gets a bit shorter, too, so they don't get too hot.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22- Do you know why they've got such big horns?- To protect themselves.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26That's right. Just in case any other animals want to hurt them.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Do you know what they do in winter?

0:03:28 > 0:03:31They dig around in the snow with their big horns and they try

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- and find grass. It's pretty clever. - Yeah.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Their horns can be very dangerous,

0:03:36 > 0:03:40so it's important not to get too close to a Highland cow.

0:03:40 > 0:03:41Where are you going?

0:03:41 > 0:03:44Is she going to go and try and find more food?

0:03:44 > 0:03:46Why are they your favourites?

0:03:46 > 0:03:50Because they're very calm and Riona is very, very cute.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54She's so cute, with her little curly hair.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58And I hear someone special is going to visit Riona.

0:03:58 > 0:04:03- The vet is coming later on.- Just to make sure she's nice and healthy?

0:04:03 > 0:04:06That's exciting. I can't wait for that.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Isla and Riona are two beautiful Highland cows.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16Rory, can you give us some more facts about our hairy friends, here?

0:04:16 > 0:04:19They're coming to say hello. Hi.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21Of course, Fern.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Male Highland cows are called bulls.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29Females are called cows and baby Highland cows are called calves.

0:04:32 > 0:04:38Highland cows come in lots of different colours, like red,

0:04:38 > 0:04:42black and white.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Highland cows can spend up to eight hours a day eating.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50That's a lot of food.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56The long fringe between a Highland cow's horns is

0:04:56 > 0:04:58called a dossan.

0:04:58 > 0:04:59That's a funny word.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06Highland cows have very long tongues that help them to eat

0:05:06 > 0:05:08tasty grass or lick their nose.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12Urgh!

0:05:25 > 0:05:30Highland cows are used to living in all sorts of weather conditions

0:05:30 > 0:05:33and they're pretty good at looking after themselves.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37If it gets a little bit wet, they can take shelter under some nearby trees.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Katie, what do you do to look after your cows?

0:05:40 > 0:05:44Every morning, we always go up the hill and check them.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47That's a good idea, in case any of them are sick or need help.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51- That's nice. Do you give them any special food?- Yes.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54- What do you give them? - These cow nuts.- These ones?- Yeah.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56These cow nuts are perfect.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01They're full of lovely vitamins for them to keep them nice and healthy.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06- Shall we give her some now? She looks hungry.- Yeah.- Are you ready, Isla?

0:06:09 > 0:06:12- Here's your food. Whoa!- Whoa, they're very hungry.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16She is, isn't she? She likes those.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20- What do cows drink, Katie?- Water. - Shall we get them some?

0:06:20 > 0:06:22OK, come on.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26MUSIC PLAYS

0:06:30 > 0:06:33- That enough?- Yeah.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37- Shall we go?- Yeah.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43- Where shall we put it, Katie? - This is where we put it.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45In there? OK.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50You let me know if I'm doing it right.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58- Do you think that's enough water, Katie?- Yeah.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02It's important that when you approach Highland cows, you don't

0:07:02 > 0:07:06make too much noise or wave your arms about, in case you give them

0:07:06 > 0:07:08a fright and they run away.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10- Riona is so small and cute, Katie. - Yeah.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14- Getting big and starting to nibble on some grass.- Oh, is she?- Yeah.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18- Does she lick the grass?- Yeah. - Yum.

0:07:18 > 0:07:23- Well, what if we make her something special.- A cow cake!- A cow cake.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26That sounds nice.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07- Very big bee, isn't she?- Yeah.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11Is this one of your favourite colours, Katie?

0:08:11 > 0:08:14- Yeah, and pink.- And pink. There's some big daisies there.

0:08:18 > 0:08:23Yeah. And to finish this yummy cake, we'll have a sprinkle of...

0:08:23 > 0:08:26- Cow nuts.- Yeah.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Yummy cow nuts. Let's go.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44Katie, you are so lucky to have such beautiful animals.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48Now, we all know that Highland cows are very good at looking after

0:08:48 > 0:08:53themselves, but if your Highland cows could get up to anything,

0:08:53 > 0:08:56what do you think they would do?

0:08:56 > 0:09:01If my pet could do anything, he will get on a plane

0:09:01 > 0:09:04and go to town.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08He will go into a shop and buy a pink handbag.

0:09:08 > 0:09:15Then he'll go to a hairdressers and he'll get a pink bow on her tail.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17Then he'll get the bus home.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26MUSIC PLAYS

0:09:29 > 0:09:33Just like all animals, it's important to get them checked over by a vet,

0:09:33 > 0:09:36just to make sure that they're nice and healthy.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Isla and Riona are a bit too big to take to the vets,

0:09:39 > 0:09:43so the local vet, Rhona, has come to check if they're OK. Hi, Rhona.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45- Hi, Fern. Hi, Katie.- Hi.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54Five weeks ago.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58- You have to be careful when a cow has a calf, don't you?- You do.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00It's very important not to go too close,

0:10:00 > 0:10:03because they can be very protective of their calves

0:10:03 > 0:10:07and it's important not to go between the cow and her calf,

0:10:07 > 0:10:09otherwise mummy will be worried.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12- She's keeping a good eye on Riona now, isn't she?- She is.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15I think she's very fond of her calf.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18I'm not surprised. She's beautiful.

0:10:18 > 0:10:23Katie, we'll stay here while Rhona goes to check on Isla and Riona.

0:10:45 > 0:10:51I can see that there, and she's got a lovely moist nose.
