0:01:29 > 0:01:31- Is he home?- Yeah.- Where is he?

0:01:31 > 0:01:36- He's in the back garden. - I'm very excited to meet him.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51- Don't you think?- Yeah.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55A cockerel is what you call a young, male chicken.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57Why is Colin so special?

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Because I saw him hatch out of the egg.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04- Wow. So, you've known him since he was teeny-weeny?- Yeah.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07What did you do to look after him when he was small?

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Gave him food and water.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Now, you and Colin like to do something special together.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16- What do you do with Colin? - We take him to poultry shows.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Oh, wow. Poultry is a word given to birds like ducks,

0:02:20 > 0:02:25geese and chickens which can be kept as pets, or used for farming.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30A poultry show is a competition where these birds go to compete for awards.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Have you ever won any awards?

0:02:32 > 0:02:38I've won lots of cards, and lots of rosettes and two trophies.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Two trophies? Wow, you must be really good at looking after chickens.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46And Colin won all of the trophies and Daisy won some of the rosettes.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Wow. Well, who's Daisy? DAISY SQUAWKS

0:02:49 > 0:02:52- Oh!- That's Daisy. - Here's Daisy, now. Hello, Daisy.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54Daisy is Colin's wife.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Wow, she's very beautiful as well.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59What sort of chicken are these guys?

0:02:59 > 0:03:03- Booted Bantams.- Why are they called Booted Bantams?

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- Because they have feathers on their feet.- Yes, I can see that.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10- It's like little feathery boots, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13That's very smart indeed.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17So, what's the proper way to hold Daisy? How do you do it?

0:03:17 > 0:03:19- Put this hand underneath here. - Ah-huh.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23- Where does the other hand go?- On top. - That's to protect the wings.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27- Does she like having cuddles?- Ah-hum. - Look at how big her tail is!

0:03:27 > 0:03:30It's quite big.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38- There you are, Daise.- Well, I think your chickens are fantastic.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41And I have a special surprise for you later.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44Oh, I like surprises. That's exciting.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48Ferne, can you give us some more facts about our feathery friends?

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Of course, Rory. One.

0:03:51 > 0:03:56Male chickens, like Colin, are called cockerels when they are young

0:03:56 > 0:04:00and cocks when they are older. Female chickens, like Daisy,

0:04:00 > 0:04:04are called pullets when they are young and hens when they are older.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08Two. The noise a cockerel makes is called a crow.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12Cockerels are famous for crowing in the morning to wake us up,

0:04:12 > 0:04:16- COCKEREL CROWS - but they can crow any time of day.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21Three. Cockerels have a special bit on top of their head called a comb

0:04:21 > 0:04:27and a dangly bit underneath their beak called a wattle. Four.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31A cockerel can have lots of different coloured feathers,

0:04:31 > 0:04:36like black and white, orange and red and even green and blue.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45- DOG BARKS - Care Time!

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Chickens are great pets if you have the time and space

0:04:48 > 0:04:52to look after them properly. Rhys, do you think you can show me

0:04:52 > 0:04:56- everything you need to do to look after them?- Yeah.- Excellent...

0:04:56 > 0:05:00- Is there anyone that can help?- Euan and Jake, my brothers.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12- Aw.- Bye! Let's clean out, come on!

0:05:14 > 0:05:20COLIN AND DAISY CROW HAPPILY

0:05:20 > 0:05:24- OK, where are your brothers?- They're there.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27- Hi, guys.- Hi, Rory.- Hi, Rory.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32OK, we'll clean out this end and you guys change the food and water.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44You can take that, good work.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47- Daisy laid an egg.- Wow, no way!

0:05:47 > 0:05:50- Well, we better take care of that. - Yeah.

0:05:56 > 0:06:02'We need to clean out the coop every day to keep it nice and clean.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05- 'We take out the old bedding.' - Excellent.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18'Daisy and Colin need fresh water every day.'

0:06:18 > 0:06:21COLIN CROWS

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Right, that's all tidied up.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31- Now we need to put more in. - Some fresh stuff. Where is it?

0:06:31 > 0:06:35- There.- Tah-dah. Right, let's get the fresh stuff in.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39- Do you think Daisy and Colin are going to like this?- Yeah.

0:06:39 > 0:06:44- They can scratch about in here. - Yeah.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48'Daisy and Colin eat special chicken pellets.'

0:06:51 > 0:06:55Shall we put the perch and the frame in? I'll take this one.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03There we go. Let's put that one in.

0:07:03 > 0:07:09- There.- Great.- Good.- OK. Now we need to put that back on, don't we?- Yeah.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12- We put it in round this way.- That way.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19Here comes the food and water. Excellent.

0:07:22 > 0:07:28Good work. And now, the water. Excellent, Jake.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Right, that's all sorted. What do we need to do now?

0:07:31 > 0:07:34ALL: Wash our hands! RORY: Let's go!

0:07:37 > 0:07:41Phew, that was a lot of hard work. Is it time for my surprise now?

0:07:41 > 0:07:44We're going to take Colin to a poultry show.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47I've never been to a poultry show before. That's exciting.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51What do we have to do to get Colin ready for a poultry show?

0:07:51 > 0:07:55- We gave him a bath three days ago, so he's nice and clean.- Great.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59Giving Colin a bath a few days before the show means that there's

0:07:59 > 0:08:02time for the natural oils to return to his feathers.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04That way he's not only clean,

0:08:04 > 0:08:06he's also shiny and healthy as well.

0:08:06 > 0:08:12- What else do we have to do to get him ready?- We've got to clean his feet.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15- What have you got here?- A flannel and some water in a bowl.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19You give it a nice, gentle wipe then.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23There you are.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27Let's get the other one.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33- Do you think Colin's looking good? - Yeah.- Great.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Well, I think we're ready for the show.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52and I think Colin's ready too.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56But if Colin could do anything, what do you think he would do?

0:08:56 > 0:08:58DRUMROLL GONG!

0:08:58 > 0:09:03If my pet could do anything he would be a rock star.

0:09:03 > 0:09:09He would play a big, red guitar with big, gold stars on it.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12And Daisy would play the drums.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16And the stage would have big, colourful lights.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19And there would be a crowd of chickens, cheering for them.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22CHICKENS CLUCK

0:09:39 > 0:09:42We've come to the poultry show to enter Rhys' cockerel, Colin.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45There are lots of awards for the different breeds

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Healthiest and most handsome chickens.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00- Colin is both of those things so I think he has a good chance.- Yeah.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20And while we're away enjoying ourselves,

0:11:20 > 0:11:25the judges are taking a good look at Colin.
