0:01:15 > 0:01:19Today, we're in Ayrshire to meet Eilidh and her pet fish,

0:01:19 > 0:01:20and I cannot wait.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Come on, let's go meet them.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33- Hello. You must be Eilidh.- Hi, Ferne.- And you must be Mum. Hi.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Hi, Ferne.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38- I hear you have some fish that you'd like me to see.- Yeah.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41- Shall we go say hello?- Yeah.- Come on.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Wow. So these are your fish? They're beautiful.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55What type of fish are they, Eilidh?

0:01:55 > 0:01:58- They're guppies.- Guppies? Wow.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Guppies are a type of tropical fish.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02They can also be called rainbow fish

0:02:02 > 0:02:05because of their colourful bodies and fins.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08They're beautiful. What are their names?

0:02:08 > 0:02:12- Big Sparkle and Little Sparkle. - Those are fantastic names.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14So which one's which?

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Little Sparkle has yellow on their tail.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Big Sparkle has orange.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23- So Big Sparkle is a bit more orange than Little Sparkle?- Yeah.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25They're so beautiful.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29- How long have you had the fish? - Eight months.- That is great.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32It's perfect you've got two so they can keep each other company,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35- can't they?- Yeah. - Fish can be just like us.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37They can get lonely sometimes.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40So it's nice to have at least two.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44- What's your favourite thing about your fish?- Feeding them.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48- Do they like to go to the top of the tank when you feed them?- Yeah.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Some people think fish don't have good memories,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53but I bet your fish always remember

0:02:53 > 0:02:56when they're due to get fed, don't they?

0:02:56 > 0:03:00- Yeah, and Little Sparkle misses the food.- Oh, no!

0:03:00 > 0:03:02- Does Big Sparkle gobble it all up?- Yeah.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05- Is that why he's called Big Sparkle? - Yeah.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09I think they're really nice. Do you know I've got fish too?

0:03:09 > 0:03:10Yeah?

0:03:10 > 0:03:14One of my favourite things about fish is just watching them,

0:03:14 > 0:03:16because they're so calm and peaceful.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19They're beautiful, the way they just swim around.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24I have a joke for you, Eilidh. Why are fish so good at singing?

0:03:24 > 0:03:28- I don't know.- Because they always practise their scales!

0:03:29 > 0:03:33Rory, quick, will you give us some fish facts, please?

0:03:33 > 0:03:36I need to work on my jokes, don't I?

0:03:36 > 0:03:38I think you do, Ferne.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44Fish have lots of little hard plates called scales covering their body

0:03:44 > 0:03:46which help to protect them.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Guppies come in a variety of colours.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57And they also have different shapes of tail.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05A female guppy is often larger than the male,

0:04:05 > 0:04:08but the male can be more brightly coloured with spots,

0:04:08 > 0:04:10stripes and splashes.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26Lots of animals need care and attention,

0:04:26 > 0:04:28but fish especially need looking after

0:04:28 > 0:04:32because they live in a tank and are entirely dependent on their owners.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36So, Eilidh, what do you do to look after Big Sparkle

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- and Little Sparkle?- Clean their tank.- Exactly.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42It's important to clean fish tanks regularly

0:04:42 > 0:04:44to stop algae building up.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46- And also fish poo a lot, don't they?- Yeah.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49So sometimes the water can get a little bit cloudy,

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- and that's not very nice for them to swim in, is it?- No.- No, no, no.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- Shall we get started?- Yeah.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58OK.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02It's important to keep your fish in the tank when you clean them out,

0:05:02 > 0:05:06so you don't stress them out too much, so we're going to use this.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09It's called a siphon. We'll suck up the old water

0:05:09 > 0:05:12and clean the pebbles at the same time. It's clever.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16- Eilidh, what is this at the back? - The filter.- That's right.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18- What does it do?- Clean the tank.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21The filter helps to keep the water clean.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24But because we're going to clean the tank,

0:05:24 > 0:05:26- shall we turn it off?- Yeah. - OK. I'll do that.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31It's important not to touch the fish

0:05:31 > 0:05:35in case you might injure them, so we're going to be careful.

0:05:35 > 0:05:36Here we go.

0:05:41 > 0:05:42Good job.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45So if we bring it down to all these pebbles,

0:05:45 > 0:05:48you can vacuum up all along the pebbles.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52- Are the fish OK?- Yeah.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55- What are they doing? - Swimming around.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58- Are they supervising us?- Yeah.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01- That's enough water out now, isn't it?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Cos you only take out a little bit of water at a time. Not too much.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09- Now, the filter needs to be cleaned, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11What we do is, we take out the sponges

0:06:11 > 0:06:14which are filled with bacteria.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17We'll clean them in the water we've just taken out,

0:06:17 > 0:06:18and we do this

0:06:18 > 0:06:22because these sponges contain lots of good bacteria for fish

0:06:22 > 0:06:25and you want to keep that bacteria.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29A little bit of a squeeze, and put them straight back in.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31So now, what do we need?

0:06:31 > 0:06:37- Fresh water.- Exactly. And your mum's going to bring us some.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41- Here you go, guys.- Thank you. - And I'll take this one away.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45This isn't just water from a tap.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49It's been specially treated so that it's safe for the fish.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52I'll put it in nice and gently.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55- Do you think they like this, Eilidh?- Yeah.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00And I'll fill up the filter,

0:07:00 > 0:07:02- and we can turn it on.- Yeah.

0:07:02 > 0:07:03Ready?

0:07:06 > 0:07:07That looks great.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11Good job. But now what do we need to do?

0:07:11 > 0:07:13- Wash your hands.- Yes. Shall we go?

0:07:13 > 0:07:15Yeah.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26- This tank is squeaky clean now, isn't it?- Yeah.- Well done.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30There's plenty of space for your fish to swim around.

0:07:30 > 0:07:31- Yeah.- They're very lucky.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35There's lots of nice places for them to hide, isn't there?

0:07:35 > 0:07:38- Yeah.- What have we got in there, Eilidh?- A rainbow.

0:07:38 > 0:07:44- I love that rainbow.- And a tree with pink and green.- Yes.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48- What else do we need to do to look after your fish?- Feed them.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52- And how often do you feed them? - Once a day.- That's perfect.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- Shall we give them a bit of food now?- Yeah.- They deserve it.

0:07:59 > 0:08:00You show me how it's done.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05Just a little pinch.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Come on, fish.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Little Sparkle and Big Sparkle have a lovely clean tank

0:08:13 > 0:08:14and they've got lots of food.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18- I think you've got two really happy fish.- Yeah.- Definitely.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23My Pet And Me!

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Fish spend all of their time in the water, swimming,

0:08:27 > 0:08:29eating and exploring.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32But if Big Sparkle and Little Sparkle

0:08:32 > 0:08:35could do absolutely anything in the world, Eilidh,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37what would they do?

0:08:37 > 0:08:39DRUM ROLL

0:08:40 > 0:08:43If my pet could do anything,

0:08:43 > 0:08:47they'd be a fish rock band.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53They'd perform to all the sea life...

0:08:56 > 0:09:01..and have seahorses as backing dancers.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12We've come on a special trip to the local Botanical Gardens

0:09:12 > 0:09:14to have a look for some different fish.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18- Shall we go see if we can find them? - Yeah.- Come on.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31Wow! Look at these, Eilidh! They are gorgeous.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35- They're a lot bigger than your guppies, aren't they?- Yeah.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38- Do you know what type of fish they are?- I don't know.

0:09:38 > 0:09:39They're called carp.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Some of them look like goldfish. They're amazing.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45Many of these fish were donated by families

0:09:45 > 0:09:48who thought they were getting a bit big.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51It's no surprise. Some of them swimming around

0:09:51 > 0:09:53are about that big, they're massive.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56- Look at this one.- Look at that one. - That one is huge.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Oh, look, here comes another.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01- Look at that one. - Ooh! I like that one.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Oh, yeah, yeah. Here comes one now.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08There are so many, and they are all these beautiful colours.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11You know the way these fish have all of this stuff to look at?

0:10:11 > 0:10:15They've got lots of plants, they've got lots of people visiting them.

0:10:15 > 0:10:20I was thinking, what if we got your fish an ornament for their tank?

0:10:20 > 0:10:22- Yeah.- OK, let's go have a look around.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33This shop looks like it will have some great things for fish.

0:10:37 > 0:10:38Fish.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41I like them.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Look in there.

0:10:43 > 0:10:44That is cool.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49- Yeah.- I think we should try and find some toys now.- Yeah.- OK.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58Look at all of these. They're all so great.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01How can you possibly choose, Eilidh? What about the shark?

0:11:01 > 0:11:03Yeah.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05That's cool, and he's got sunglasses.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08Do you think he looks like he's ready for his holidays?

0:11:08 > 0:11:12Those teeth could be a little bit sharp, couldn't they?

0:11:12 > 0:11:16- Yeah.- What's that, Eilidh? - A cupcake castle.- A cupcake castle?

0:11:16 > 0:11:19- Do you think your fish would want to eat that?- Yeah.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21It does look tasty, doesn't it?

0:11:21 > 0:11:25- Sparkles.- I like that one. Sparkly for Big Sparkle and Little Sparkle?

0:11:25 > 0:11:29But out of all of these, Eilidh, which one is your favourite?

0:11:29 > 0:11:32- That one.- That big castle? Let's see.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35That'd be perfect for your fish.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38What do you think they'll like the most?

0:11:38 > 0:11:40- That.- A secret door.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44- And it's somewhere they can hide. - Yeah.- And they've got windows.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48Yeah, they can swim up inside and try and look out the windows.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52- Shall we get that one, then?- Yeah. - OK, come on, let's go.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56I think that the castle looks great, Eilidh.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59- Big Sparkle is definitely interested.- I think it's good.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03What do you think their favourite thing is in this castle?

0:12:03 > 0:12:07- Inside of it.- That's right. There's loads of places they can hide.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09- Yeah. - I had so much fun meeting you

0:12:09 > 0:12:12and Big Sparkle and Little Sparkle.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36I've been catching up on some serious cuddle time with Hector.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39I see that. He's loving it. Pets are great.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Remember, don't touch an animal unless the owner says it's OK.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45Two pets you can play with are ours.
