0:01:18 > 0:01:22Today I'm in Cornwall to meet two children and their honeybees.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24I'm so excited. Come on, let's go and say hello.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33- Hello, you must be Rosie. - Hi, Rory.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35- Which means you're Henry, right? - Yes.- And you must be Dad?

0:01:35 > 0:01:39- Hello, Rory.- Hello. Now, I've heard you guys keep honeybees.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41- Is that true?- Yeah.- They're just down there.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43So they are. Look at the hives!

0:01:43 > 0:01:45They're like little wooden tower blocks, aren't they?

0:01:45 > 0:01:47- Yeah.- Now, you guys don't have one or two bees, do you?

0:01:47 > 0:01:51- How many do you have?- We have 15,000 in the summer.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Wow, that is a lot of bees.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57- I know!- Bees are social insects which live in nests and hives,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59so why did you decide to get bees, Rosie?

0:01:59 > 0:02:03- They're not really pets, are they? - No. They are different from pets

0:02:03 > 0:02:04because they don't live in your house,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06and you don't want them too close to you.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Of course, yes. You should never approach a honeybee hive

0:02:09 > 0:02:12without the right equipment because they can sting you,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14so we're at the safe distance just now.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16But what do you love about them, Henry?

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Eating the honey out of the extractor.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Yes, honey, I can't wait to learn about that later.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Sounds delicious. Now, I can see a few of the bees

0:02:24 > 0:02:27flying around the hives just now, and I think I can hear them as well.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29What sound to bees make?

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Buzz!

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Buzz!

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Yes, that's right, so how do they make that noise?

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Well, their wings, because as they go so fast,

0:02:39 > 0:02:40they, like, clap together.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42That's right. As they flap their wings around,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45they beat together and make the buzz.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47- Buzz!- Buzz!- Ha-ha-ha!

0:02:48 > 0:02:49Those are some very good impressions.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Ferne, can you tell us a bit more

0:02:52 > 0:02:54about brilliant buzzing bees, please?

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Of course, Rory.

0:02:57 > 0:03:02One, there are three different kinds of bees that live in the UK,

0:03:02 > 0:03:06bumblebees, honeybees and solitary bees.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Two, honeybees live in hives,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13and each hive has one queen bee, who's the

0:03:13 > 0:03:16largest in size and the only one who can lay eggs.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20The hive also has lots of worker bees to collect all the food from

0:03:20 > 0:03:22the flowers, as well as drone bees

0:03:22 > 0:03:25who leave the hive to find a new queen bee.

0:03:27 > 0:03:32Three, bees have very good eyesight, and they actually have five eyes.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36Two eyes at the front of their heads and three smaller eyes on top.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53While bees might not be like other pets,

0:03:53 > 0:03:57they still need lots of care and attention to keep them happy,

0:03:57 > 0:03:58healthy and making lots of honey.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02So you should only approach bees if you've got the right equipment,

0:04:02 > 0:04:04training and supervision. Then you can get a bit closer.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06So, what do we need?

0:04:06 > 0:04:10We need a smoker because it calms the bees down.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Yes, they might get a bit upset with us being nearby but the smoke's

0:04:13 > 0:04:14there to keep them calm, isn't it?

0:04:14 > 0:04:16- Yeah.- Why does the smoke keep them calm?

0:04:16 > 0:04:20Because it makes them think that there's a fire nearby,

0:04:20 > 0:04:22so they eat as much honey as they can

0:04:22 > 0:04:25and it makes them full up, so they get sleepy and they

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- can't fly away. - Just like me after lunch!

0:04:28 > 0:04:30- Yeah.- I get a bit sleepy.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34If you do that bit, smoke comes out of the end.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36Great, well, I think we definitely want that.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38- What else, then, Rosie?- Tools.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Well, you can use both ends on this.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46You twist the frames out at the side if they're stuck together,

0:04:46 > 0:04:48and then you hook them up like that.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51OK, the frames are inside the hive, aren't they?

0:04:51 > 0:04:53- Yeah.- Cool, well, we'll see those later.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- So, we've got this equipment. Do we need any food?- Sometimes.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58When do you need the food?

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Only in winter, because there's lots of flowers

0:05:02 > 0:05:06around now and there's not that many in winter,

0:05:06 > 0:05:10so they need to have food taken to them.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13- And what do you feed them? - A thick syrup.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16- So, it's nice and sweet?- Yeah. - And it's full of energy for them?

0:05:16 > 0:05:18- Yeah.- That sounds delicious.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20But we don't need that today because it's not winter.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22We've got lots of flowers around, so the bees to have something to eat.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25- OK, so have we got everything, then? - Don't forget the bee suits.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Of course, they're important. Let's go.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Ha-ha, check us out, guys!

0:05:41 > 0:05:43You guys are looking super cool.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47- How do I look?- Awesome.- Awesome. - Thank you very much.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49Let's do some beekeeping!

0:05:51 > 0:05:55Rosie and Henry's dad is going to meet us up at the beehives.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06- Right, Rosie, is your dad going to light the smoker now?- Yeah.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10Smoke will help keep the bees nice and calm so they don't panic.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18- Wow!- These are some of the bees in there.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21So, Henry, what is the difference between the workers and the drones?

0:06:21 > 0:06:24I don't think there's any drones on this one.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27- Are these all workers?- Yeah.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30The thin ones are workers that go out of the hive.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34- OK.- And drones are big, fat, googly-eyed.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Ah, and which ones are boys and which ones are girls?

0:06:37 > 0:06:41The drones are boys and the girls are the workers.

0:06:41 > 0:06:42Cool. So, we've got lots of workers here.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Look what they're on, they're on the honeycomb here, aren't they?

0:06:45 > 0:06:47- I don't know.- It's a beautiful pattern, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49And the bees have made this all themselves?

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- Yeah.- OK, Rosie, what are they up to?

0:06:52 > 0:06:55They're eating. It's honey inside and they dip their head in,

0:06:55 > 0:06:58- just like this one. - Oh, yeah, look at it.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01It's having a right good feed. Very, very smart honeybees.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04- Shall we look further down? - Yes, I'd love to look further down.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Now, let's look at some frames.

0:07:12 > 0:07:13These are the frames? OK.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15- Are you going to take one out, then? - Yeah.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Show me what to do.

0:07:17 > 0:07:22So, first of all, you get into the middle bit and you twist.

0:07:23 > 0:07:28Then you get your thumb and finger, you lift it up.

0:07:28 > 0:07:33As you can see here, there's loads and loads

0:07:33 > 0:07:35of honey stores in here.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37That looks amazing.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- Look at that.- And if you want to hold it, like this...- Uh-huh?

0:07:40 > 0:07:44- ..you can see how heavy it is. - Oh, wow, it's really heavy.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Here. They're really clever,

0:07:46 > 0:07:49they take the caps off and then they drink the honey.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53Oh, wow! What are the caps made of?

0:07:53 > 0:07:54- Wax.- Brilliant.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58You can eat the wax from the caps.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Check it out, and there's a bee having a right good drink of honey

0:08:01 > 0:08:03- right now.- Yeah. - And it smells amazing.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06Well, these frames are incredible. I think we should give them to your

0:08:06 > 0:08:10- dad to take back to the house and see if we can get some honey.- Yeah!

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Bye, bees!

0:08:20 > 0:08:24Oh, your bees are great, guys, but if they could do anything,

0:08:24 > 0:08:25what do you think they'd do?

0:08:30 > 0:08:32If my bees could do anything,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34they'd all board an aeroplane and fly to Flower Land.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39They would suck up the nectar from the flowers...

0:08:42 > 0:08:44..and make pretty dresses out of the petals.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49They would have a bee party and dance around in the air.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53And make pretty pictures in the sky.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03So, your dad's got all these frames from the hive.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06- I think it's time to get the honey out, don't you?- Yeah!

0:09:06 > 0:09:08What do we need to do first, Rosie?

0:09:08 > 0:09:11We need to take the frame out and get the caps off.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Oh, yes, the caps from today that you showed me.

0:09:13 > 0:09:18- Yeah.- So...- You need to get your knife and just take them off.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21- Very carefully. - So you can see the honey.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24- Right, how am I doing, Rosie, is this good?- Really good.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28- This is the first time I've done this.- It looks delicious.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32It's tempting to just get in there and eat all of it!

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Well, we have to wait, don't we?

0:09:34 > 0:09:36Bees make honey so they don't get hungry in the winter

0:09:36 > 0:09:39when there aren't many flowers around, but they make lots extra

0:09:39 > 0:09:43so there's plenty for us to take as well. Right, that's looking good,

0:09:43 > 0:09:45- so what's next, Henry? - The extractor.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49- OK, what does that involve? - Putting two frames in this part,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52two frames in that part and you twist this one round.

0:09:52 > 0:09:57- OK.- And then the honey rolls into the bottom.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Delicious. Right, let's pop this in now, Henry.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11- I'll turn this over. - Oh, this looks like darker honey!

0:10:11 > 0:10:15- It does, doesn't?- Darker honey is because they use different plants.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18That's right. The honey colour can change depending on what nectar

0:10:18 > 0:10:20- they've been getting.- Yeah.- Right.

0:10:23 > 0:10:24Ready?

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Let's have a look. Slow it down.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37OK, let's see how you've done.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40Oh, wow! This one's empty.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43That's great. So, now a very important job for you, Rosie.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46We're going to lift this up and you're going to turn the honey gate

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- open...- Yeah.- ..and what's going to happen?- Honey will come out.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Yes!

0:10:52 > 0:10:54A bit slower, a bit slower.

0:10:54 > 0:10:59- That's it. Look at that lovely runny honey.- Wow!

0:10:59 > 0:11:01So, what do you do when you've filled up lots of jars?

0:11:01 > 0:11:04We sell them on the end of our road.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Oh, excellent. Right. That's full. Let's go and sell some honey.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21Roll-up! Come and get your delicious honey!

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Roll-up, today, fresh honey!

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Fresh from our own bees!

0:11:27 > 0:11:31- We've got some customers. - Roll-up, roll-up.- Hello.- Hi.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33- How many jars would you like? - One, please.- There you go.

0:11:33 > 0:11:38- That's £1, please. Thank you. - Bye!- See you.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42- How many jars would you like? - Just one, please.- Excellent.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45- Thank you.- Thank you very much, see you later.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Bye, enjoy your honey.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53- Oh, excellent.- Thank you, guys! - Thank you very much.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Guys, look at this, look how much honey we sold!

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- Wow!- Great job. High fives! Yeah!

0:12:09 > 0:12:11That is delicious. What a day I've had.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13I've learned so much about honeybees.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15They are absolutely amazing, aren't they?

0:12:15 > 0:12:20- Yeah.- Yeah.- Thank you, Rory, for coming and helping with the bees.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24Thank you both are having me and, as a special thank you to your bees,

0:12:24 > 0:12:26I got them a present.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29- Some flowers.- Thanks, Rory! - Thanks, Rory.

0:12:29 > 0:12:30You're welcome.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45- Hi, Ferne.- Hi, Rory. You look like you've had a great day.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48- What have you been up to?- Oh, Ferne, I had an awesome time.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50It was so much fun with my new friends.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Oh, fantastic. Well, I'm just giving Sunny a bit of a brush

0:12:52 > 0:12:55- because he was a bit mucky from earlier.- Oh, I can see that,

0:12:55 > 0:12:57- and he looks spectacular.- Thanks!

0:12:57 > 0:12:59Pets are brilliant but, remember, you shouldn't touch an animal

0:12:59 > 0:13:01unless the owner says it's OK.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04But two pets you can definitely play with are ours.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07Go on the CBeebies website and play the My Pet And Me game.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Thanks for joining us. We hope you had fun, too.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17# Today we met

0:13:17 > 0:13:19# A lovely pet

0:13:19 > 0:13:22# We see how much you care for them

0:13:22 > 0:13:26# Thank you so much for sharing them

0:13:26 > 0:13:27# Time for us to

0:13:28 > 0:13:30# Just remind you

0:13:31 > 0:13:34# After you've played with your pet

0:13:34 > 0:13:38# Wash your hands, don't forget!

0:13:38 > 0:13:40# It doesn't matter what pet you've got

0:13:40 > 0:13:43# You might have one, you might not

0:13:43 > 0:13:46# It's still fun finding out

0:13:46 > 0:13:49# What having a pet is all about

0:13:50 > 0:13:52# My pet, my pet and me
