0:01:17 > 0:01:20Today I'm in Bury to meet Zach and his pet stick insects.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Come on. Let's go and say hello.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31- Hi Rory!- Hello, you must be Zach and you must be Mum.- Hi, Rory.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35- Do you want to come and meet my pet stick insects?- I'd love to.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42OK. Who do we have in here, then?

0:01:42 > 0:01:44We have Pixie,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48Mo and Simone.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50OK, let me see if I can find them all.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52I can see one in here.

0:01:52 > 0:01:53- Who is that?- That's Pixie.

0:01:55 > 0:02:00- And that's Simone.- Right, let me see if I can find Mo.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02- Shall I help you? - Yes, please. Oh.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04RORY LAUGHS

0:02:04 > 0:02:06He's hiding down there.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Look at that. It was quite hard to find them.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13What's it called when an animal hides in its environment?

0:02:13 > 0:02:18- Camouflage.- Yes. Some animals use camouflage to blend into their

0:02:18 > 0:02:23surroundings so they can't be seen. It's a great way to hide.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27They are beautiful. How do you know that's Simone and Pixie?

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Because Pixie's bigger than Simone.

0:02:29 > 0:02:34- And are they both bigger than Mo? Is Mo a boy?- Yes.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Mo, is smaller

0:02:36 > 0:02:40and he doesn't have an ovipositor like them.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44Right. It's the bit at the back, like a spike, the ovipositor.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47It's for laying eggs.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50That's right. And where do the eggs get laid?

0:02:50 > 0:02:53- In the soil.- And you've provided some there.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57That's perfect. And what kind of stick insects do you have, Zach?

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- Sabah spiny.- Sabah spiny.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04And they come from Malaysia, from the forests in the mountains.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07- I can see their spines there, look at that.- Yeah.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11- How many spines do they have? - Too many to count.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13- There is a lot, isn't there?- Yeah.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18- I'd quite like to get a closer look, Zach. Shall we take one out?- Yes.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21OK, let's lift this up carefully. And look...

0:03:21 > 0:03:23We have this lady here.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Let's see if she will go up into my hand.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28She is beautiful.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30What do you love most about them?

0:03:30 > 0:03:33They're so fast, like this.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35- RORY LAUGHS Very speedy.- Yeah.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39- How many legs does she have? - Six.- She does.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42- They help her to be a brilliant climber, don't they?- Yeah.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45- What are these called? - Antennae.- Absolutely.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50Stick insects don't have ears, and instead have these antenna

0:03:50 > 0:03:53which can feel vibrations in the air.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55It's so cool, isn't it, Rory?

0:03:55 > 0:03:58These are very cool creatures, indeed.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02Ferne, can you tell us a bit more about our sticky friends, here?

0:04:02 > 0:04:04Of course, Rory.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09Stick insects come in lots of different colours, and some of them

0:04:09 > 0:04:11even look like leaves.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18Some stick insects can spray a nasty liquid when trying to protect

0:04:18 > 0:04:21themselves from predators.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27They like to hide under leaves and are more active at night-time.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40All pets need loving care. Mo, Simone and Pixie are no different.

0:04:40 > 0:04:45Because they live in a tank, they're entirely dependent on their owners.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49- How do you look after them?- I clean them out and give them food.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52- Where do we get food from?- Come on, I'll show you.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00I thought we were getting food. What are we doing out in the woods?

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Looking for food for the stick insects.

0:05:02 > 0:05:07Ah, foraging. Foraging is when you search for food outside,

0:05:07 > 0:05:10something pretty much every wild animal has to do.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12So, what are we looking for?

0:05:12 > 0:05:15- Bramble.- All right, let's find some.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18The stick insects love bramble.

0:05:19 > 0:05:24Oh, this looks like a good bit.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28- Right.- We need to cut the end of the stalk, here.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30OK.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35There we go. We'll pop that in.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41- What about this bit, here?- Yay!

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Always wear gloves when picking prickly brambles,

0:05:48 > 0:05:51and always ask an adult before you cut any plants.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55Most important, make sure you leave plenty behind for local wildlife.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59- This looks great. Shall we see if they like it?- Yeah, let's go.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06OK, so we've popped Mo, Simone and Pixie in here while we

0:06:06 > 0:06:09clean out the big tank. What do we do first?

0:06:09 > 0:06:13We need it take out the old food and throw it in the bin.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17Good job. That's it.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20- Right. What's next?- We need to take this out first.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23- Are we going to throw that in the bin?- No.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- Why not?- Because Pixie has laid her eggs in that.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30Of course, we want to look after them. What now?

0:06:30 > 0:06:33- Take the paper out with the poos on it.- Cool.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35- You can do that one.- OK.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Right. What's next?

0:06:41 > 0:06:43Fresh paper.

0:06:44 > 0:06:49- How many sheets are you going to put down?- Two on each side.

0:06:49 > 0:06:50That's done.

0:06:52 > 0:06:53New water.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00- Perfect.- Put it in the middle. - There we go.

0:07:00 > 0:07:05- Let's get the food ready. Shall we chop up these brambles?- Yeah.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Chop! RORY LAUGHS

0:07:13 > 0:07:18- What now?- We need to put this in...

0:07:18 > 0:07:19here.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25- Good work. Shall we put the stick insects back in?- Yeah.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31- I need to take my gloves off first. - Good thinking.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35- Come on. Go, go.- OK. Good work. Well done.- It's OK, it's OK.

0:07:38 > 0:07:39Very gentle.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41- Who was that?- Simone.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44OK. Who are you going for next?

0:07:44 > 0:07:46- Pixie?- Yeah.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Quite fast.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Well done.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54And next is Mo.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56Where's Mo hiding?

0:07:56 > 0:07:59- Come on, come on.- You're being so gentle.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03Go on. Good boy.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10And look! They've started eating the fresh bramble already.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15- Are we finished?- No. - What are we missing?

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Wait a minute. We need to get the spray.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Of course, give them a spray, then.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24We spray the tank with water every day.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28- So, Zach, why do you spray water in? - So they can drink it.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Is that how they drink, then?

0:08:30 > 0:08:34They drink from the leaves on the side of the tank.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39Water is not only a drink, but also for keeping the habitat

0:08:39 > 0:08:43nice and humid. A habitat is a place where an animal lives,

0:08:43 > 0:08:46and some like it to be dry, and others prefer it humid.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48Humid just means a little bit wet.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51- Shall we put the lid back on? - Yes, quickly.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58There we go. Looks fantastic. I think we've done a great job.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- Do you know what we need to do? - Wash our hands.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04We certainly do. Let's go and do it now.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17We've done a great job of cleaning the tank.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19It looks like an amazing mini forest.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23- There's lot of places to hide. - Yeah, there certainly is.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25If your stick insects could do anything,

0:09:25 > 0:09:28what do you think they'd do?

0:09:31 > 0:09:34If my pets could do anything,

0:09:34 > 0:09:39they would play football in a match against other bugs.

0:09:39 > 0:09:44My stick insect team would wear trainers on all of their feet

0:09:44 > 0:09:49and would wear rainbow-coloured football strips.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54They would run fast, up and down the park,

0:09:54 > 0:09:56and they would score loads of goals.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07We can't play with stick insects cos they're a bit too delicate,

0:10:07 > 0:10:11but they're strong in their own way, cos they climb really well,

0:10:11 > 0:10:12and hold on fantastically.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16- Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a stick insect?- Yeah.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19I've got an idea. Come with me.

0:10:22 > 0:10:26- You know how stick insects are good at sticking to things?- Yeah!

0:10:26 > 0:10:28So are we!

0:10:38 > 0:10:40THEY LAUGH

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Oh! ZACH LAUGHS

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Do you know how stick insects stick to things?

0:10:50 > 0:10:52With their hooks on their feet.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56That's right, they've got hooks and soft pads on their feet, which

0:10:56 > 0:11:00help them hold on. Like how this fabric helps us stick to the wall.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02ZACH SQUEALS

0:11:05 > 0:11:08I think I'm stuck!

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Oh!

0:11:10 > 0:11:13- Are Mo, Simone and Pixie still growing?- Yeah.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17- How can you tell?- Because they shed their skin all the time.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21That's right. That's moulting. They shed their old skin and get

0:11:21 > 0:11:24a brand-new one which is bigger and fits them better.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27It's like getting rid of clothes that don't fit any more.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30What do they do when they're moulting?

0:11:30 > 0:11:33They hang upside down by their back legs.

0:11:33 > 0:11:37- That sounds like a lot of fun. Shall we hang upside down?- Yeah.

0:11:37 > 0:11:38ZACH LAUGHS

0:11:40 > 0:11:42- How is it being upside down?- Good.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46This is what stick insects do. They crawl to the top of the tank,

0:11:46 > 0:11:49hang upside down, and shed their skin and grow a new one.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51Is it easy?

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- Yeah! - THEY LAUGH

0:11:58 > 0:11:59RORY LAUGHS

0:11:59 > 0:12:03- How is it being upside down?- It's fun, but it's pretty tough.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06- Can you get off?- Woohoo!

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Well, Simone, Mo, and Pixie.

0:12:11 > 0:12:12You guys make it look easy.

0:12:12 > 0:12:17- We tried to be stick insects and it was very difficult, wasn't it?- Yeah.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21- What was the hardest bit?- It was... It was climbing up it.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24- And trying to be upside down as well?- Yeah.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27You guys are certainly impressive creatures.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30Thanks for showing me your stick insects

0:12:30 > 0:12:33and telling me all about them. I've had a great time.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35Thank you, Rory, for visiting.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37You're welcome.

0:12:43 > 0:12:44My Pet And Me!

0:12:47 > 0:12:52- Hi, Ferne, Bagel.- Hi, Rory. You look like you've had a great day.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56- It was awesome, I'd so much fun with my new friends.- Fantastic.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00- I've been giving Bagel a bit of a brush.- Yeah, she's looking great.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04- Thanks.- Pets are brilliant, but remember not to touch an animal

0:13:04 > 0:13:06unless the owner says it is OK.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08But you can definitely play with ours.

0:13:08 > 0:13:12Go on the CBeebies website and play the My Pet And Me game.
