0:01:10 > 0:01:13I wonder what breed of dog he is. Let's go find out.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Hello! You must be Pete.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24- Hello, Rory. - And you must be Mum. Hi.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26Hi, Rory.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29And this big guy can only be Murdoch.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Hello! You are gorgeous!

0:01:32 > 0:01:35- What sort of dog is he?- Poodle dog. - Yes, that's right.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Not just any poodle, but a standard poodle.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42- You can tell because he's so big, isn't he?- Yeah.- He's gorgeous.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44There are three kinds of poodle.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Standards, like Murdoch. They're the biggest.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51Then there's miniature. Smallest of all is the toy poodle.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53- How old is Murdoch?- 11.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55- Wow. And how old are you?- Four.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58- So you're younger than your dog? - Yes.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Wow! You are quite an old dog, Murdoch,

0:02:01 > 0:02:03but you're still very handsome.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06Older dogs need extra special care.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08They need regular vet visits, healthy food

0:02:08 > 0:02:11and plenty of exercise and playtime.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13What do you love most about Murdoch?

0:02:13 > 0:02:15Giving him cuddles and tickles.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20Why don't you give him some now? Give him a big cuddle and a tickle.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24How about a big cuddle? Give him a nice squeeze.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Aw.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30He's so soft, isn't he? He's very nice.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Poodles are sociable dogs that like to spend time

0:02:33 > 0:02:35with both children and adults.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39And they love a cuddle, as you can see with Murdoch. Aw.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43Now, Pete, did you know that poodles generally like to go swimming?

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Is Murdoch a fan of swimming?

0:02:45 > 0:02:48- Well, I don't think he is. - That's funny, isn't it?

0:02:48 > 0:02:53It's very unusual for a poodle cos they were bred for that reason.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55They've got thick coats to keep them warm,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57and webbed toes as well.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01You know snorkelling fins so you can go through the water?

0:03:01 > 0:03:02It's just like that.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06- Can you swim like a poodle?- Er...

0:03:06 > 0:03:09RORY PANTS Good poodle swimming. High five.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11I like that.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Ferne, can you give us some facts about poodles

0:03:13 > 0:03:16just like our friend, Murdoch, here?

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Of course, Rory.

0:03:18 > 0:03:24One, poodles come in lots of different colours,

0:03:24 > 0:03:29including black, white, grey, brown and apricot.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36Two, poodles tend to be a very intelligent breed of dog

0:03:36 > 0:03:37and easy to train.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Three, poodles are well known for being pampered pooches

0:03:43 > 0:03:45and, due to their thick coats,

0:03:45 > 0:03:49it's important for them to be groomed regularly.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Lots of different dogs make excellent pets,

0:04:00 > 0:04:05and Murdoch, just like any dog, needs lots of care and love.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08So, Pete, how do you look after Murdoch?

0:04:08 > 0:04:11I give him food and water,

0:04:11 > 0:04:15a comfy bed, lots of walks.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19Yes. Exercise. You take him for walks? That's great.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23- Well, you obviously look after him very well.- He even gets a haircut.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26Haircuts? I'd like to hear about that later.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29I'm here to help you today, so what do we do first?

0:04:29 > 0:04:32- Come on, I'll show you. - Great, let's go.

0:04:32 > 0:04:33Come on, Murdoch.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37So we're in the kitchen.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40This is a great place to start. What have we got here?

0:04:40 > 0:04:43- Dog food. - Mmm, it looks very delicious,

0:04:43 > 0:04:45- if you're dog, I think.- Yeah.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49- We're not feeding him now, are we?- No.- When do you feed him?

0:04:49 > 0:04:51- After his walk.- Absolutely.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Always feed your dog 30 minutes to one hour after exercise

0:04:55 > 0:04:59because running around with a full tummy can make it sore.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00We don't want that.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02- How many times a day do you feed him?- Two.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06Breakfast and dinner time. OK, we've got the food there.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09- What else have we got here? - A water bowl.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11And it's very important to keep this full

0:05:11 > 0:05:13because all pets need water.

0:05:13 > 0:05:18So shall we fill this up? Right. You carry that.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21There's the comfy bed you talked about, Pete.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25- Is that where Murdoch sleeps?- Yes. - Right, let's fill this water up.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31There we go.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37Rightio, there we are.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Now, tell me about these haircuts, Pete.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43You don't take Murdoch to your hairdressers, do you? No.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46He doesn't go to a hairdressers.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49- Where does he go?- To a dog groomer.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50Oh, of course. Yes.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53Poodles have different hair to other dogs.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57It doesn't fall out easily, which means you have to brush them

0:05:57 > 0:05:58and go to the dog groomers,

0:05:58 > 0:06:02which is where we're off today, isn't it? Let's go.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10- Hi, Helen. - Hi, Rory. Hi, Pete. Hi, Murdoch.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14- Come on.- How are we doing?- Good. - Shall we go in?- Let's go.- OK.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17OK.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19So Murdoch is here for his summer haircut

0:06:19 > 0:06:23because he's fuzzy and we don't want him to get too warm.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25What do we have to do first?

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Brush Murdoch's coat, get all the dead hair out.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32- Shall we do that now, then?- OK, yep. I think we should do that now.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Look at that.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38OK. We just start at the top and work our way through.

0:06:38 > 0:06:43Look how thick and lovely his hair is, Pete. Isn't it? Touch it.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48- What does it feel like?- Soft. - It does, doesn't it?

0:06:48 > 0:06:52- Look, he's holding his chin up. - He likes that, doesn't he?

0:06:52 > 0:06:54- Very fluffy at the moment. - Look at him!

0:06:56 > 0:06:58There he is, just about ready.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01I think that's looking absolutely spectacular.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Brushing removes old hair

0:07:04 > 0:07:06and spreads natural oils over the skin.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09It keeps both the skin and coat healthy.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11So what is next, Helen?

0:07:11 > 0:07:13We've just got to choose a style for his clip.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15Just like the hairdressers.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18We get to choose how Murdoch will look.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20Right, what will we go for?

0:07:20 > 0:07:23We've got the Continental. That looks like a big beard.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26- What do you think it looks like? - A Santa Claus.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30RORY LAUGHS It does look like Santa!

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Or the Town and Country. What do you think?

0:07:32 > 0:07:36- Stripy dog.- It is, like a zebra.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Look at this one. It's called the Lion.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Would you like a lion around your house?

0:07:41 > 0:07:43I would be super scared.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46We don't want you to be scared of your dog,

0:07:46 > 0:07:48so how about this last one here,

0:07:48 > 0:07:51the Kennel, which is just shorter all over?

0:07:51 > 0:07:55- What do you think?- Good. - Can we please have the Kennel clip?

0:07:55 > 0:07:58OK, the Kennel clip is a great choice. We'll go for that one.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09He's getting his beard all cut off.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Good boy, Murdoch.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14There's a lot of hair coming off.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16We're going to do his feet next.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Murdoch finds this quite tickly.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23Sometimes he's a little bit fidgety on his feet.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Quite a lot of dogs have very tickly feet.

0:08:27 > 0:08:28- Just like people.- Yeah.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32- Have you got very tickly feet? - No.- Ooh!

0:08:32 > 0:08:34OK, the tail.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39- OK, that's his tail done. - Brilliant.

0:08:42 > 0:08:47- I think Murdoch will be smiling when he's finished, don't you?- Yes.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49He's smiling now.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- How's it looking?- Good.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55Oh, the chest hair is coming off.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Look at how well he's sitting. Isn't that amazing?

0:09:41 > 0:09:44And what do you like to do at the beach?

0:09:44 > 0:09:49I like building sandcastles and eating ice cream.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52Now that sounds like a lot of fun.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56If Murdoch here could do anything, what do you think he'd do?

0:09:57 > 0:10:00If my pet could do anything,

0:10:00 > 0:10:04he would be a train driver of a blue train

0:10:04 > 0:10:12that travels all over the countryside and in town too.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16He would stop at a dinosaur museum.
