0:01:17 > 0:01:19and I'll meet some new friends

0:01:19 > 0:01:22and we're going to find out all about them.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Hi, guys. You must be Usman and Cerys.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34- Hi.- Hi.- It is lovely to meet you.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37- And you must be their mums. Hi.- Hi, Ferne.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39I hear there are some colourful birds

0:01:39 > 0:01:43wandering around this palace. Should we try and find some?

0:01:43 > 0:01:45- Yeah.- Come on.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47Bye.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49SQUAWK, SQUAWK!

0:01:59 > 0:02:00- Hi, Carol.- Hi, Ferne.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01Hi!

0:02:01 > 0:02:04- How are you? - I'm good. How are you guys?

0:02:04 > 0:02:05Good.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08- What are you doing? - I'm tidying up the leaves,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11but normally I look after the peacocks and peahens.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15That is amazing! What a great job. How many do you have?

0:02:15 > 0:02:17We have about 11 peafowl here.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19That is great. Peafowl is a term used

0:02:19 > 0:02:22to describe both males and females.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25The males are peacocks and the females are peahens.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27What is your favourite thing about them?

0:02:27 > 0:02:31I like the colours of their feathers.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33I like their legs.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37They've got really long legs. And do they have a funny walk?

0:02:37 > 0:02:39They just do one step at a time.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40A bit of a strut, isn't it?

0:02:40 > 0:02:44The males have these magnificent colours

0:02:44 > 0:02:46to try and attract the females.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49You'll see the peahens are a bit less colourful,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52and their feathers are also shorter.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56Peacocks have an average of 150 tail feathers, and once a year

0:02:56 > 0:02:58they shed them, so there's space for more.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Do you think we'll find some of the ones they shed?

0:03:02 > 0:03:05- Yeah!- I hope so. Do the peafowl roam around freely?

0:03:05 > 0:03:09They do cos it's easy to get food, and when it's very heavy rain,

0:03:09 > 0:03:11they like to go under the trees for shelter.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Peacocks are also very self-sufficient -

0:03:14 > 0:03:16they can get things easily themselves -

0:03:16 > 0:03:19so we just check up on them and give them food.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21That's really important.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Peafowl live for around 15 years and they are social birds,

0:03:24 > 0:03:28so it's great there's a bunch so they can hang out together.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- Do they fly?- They can fly, but they are very, very big,

0:03:31 > 0:03:35so they can't stay in the air for long. Their flights are short,

0:03:35 > 0:03:39normally on to a branch where they sleep or to escape a sneaky fox.

0:03:39 > 0:03:45Rory, tell us more facts about these beautifully-coloured birds.

0:03:45 > 0:03:46Of course, Ferne.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54A group of peacocks is known as a muster or an ostentation.

0:03:57 > 0:04:02Male peacocks are best known for their amazing tail feathers,

0:04:02 > 0:04:04which is often called plumage.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08They like to stand them up and form a lovely big fan to show them off.

0:04:08 > 0:04:09Isn't it beautiful?

0:04:12 > 0:04:16Peacock feathers make up half of their body length

0:04:16 > 0:04:21and they're classed as one of the largest flying birds in the world.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Peafowl need care and attention

0:04:34 > 0:04:37just like lots of other birds and animals.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Carol and the team take care of all the peacocks and peahens,

0:04:40 > 0:04:44and there's lots of visitors every day to the estate,

0:04:44 > 0:04:46so the birds always have plenty of food.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48- Yeah.- Yes.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51It's wonderful these birds get so much care,

0:04:51 > 0:04:52so what can we do to help?

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Right now, you can clean out this bowl for me

0:04:55 > 0:04:58and fill it full of fresh seeds for them.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00- We can do that, can't we? - Yeah!- Yeah.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- I'll go turn on the water for you.- Thank you.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08- Ready, Carol.- OK.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Wait, there's a peacock that's looking for food!

0:05:21 > 0:05:24- He's not going to come for a bath? - Maybe!

0:05:29 > 0:05:30Make it nice and shiny.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34This is going to look so much better soon.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Me and Cerys are going to wipe the rest.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Carol, you can put the water off now.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44- OK, Ferne!- Thank you.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47- Right, shall we give this a little wipe down?- Yeah!

0:05:52 > 0:05:54This is looking so much better.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57- Yeah.- I think we're super cleaners.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Guys, what goes in here?

0:05:59 > 0:06:00Food!

0:06:00 > 0:06:02- Will you put them in?- Yeah!

0:06:05 > 0:06:06There you go.

0:06:11 > 0:06:16Peafowl eat lots of different things like grains, nuts, seeds, fruit,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19and sometimes even insects.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22- What do we need to do now? - Wash our hands!

0:06:22 > 0:06:23That is right.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Do you think they'll enjoy their nice tasty seeds?

0:06:35 > 0:06:39- Yeah!- How about we leave it here for them and let's go?

0:06:39 > 0:06:41- Yeah.- OK, come on.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Look, they've found the food!

0:06:48 > 0:06:50I think he enjoyed that.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54Now we've finished feeding the peafowl,

0:06:54 > 0:06:58local vet Fiona has arrived to give them a checkup.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01- Look at those. - They're beautiful, aren't they?

0:07:01 > 0:07:04And look at Alexander, he's a bit different -

0:07:04 > 0:07:05he's a white peacock.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09Fiona, what are you looking for with these peafowl?

0:07:09 > 0:07:11I'm looking at the behaviour of the peacocks,

0:07:11 > 0:07:15the condition of their feathers and the skin on their legs.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18The way they're naturally preening is good.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22They do that to remove dirt and keep their feathers healthy.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Why aren't you picking them up to look over?

0:07:24 > 0:07:27If we felt one had a problem with its feet or feathers

0:07:27 > 0:07:31we'd have to catch them, but we try to avoid stress.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34It's just a general check to see they're looking healthy.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38We can get a rough idea of if they get enough food...

0:07:38 > 0:07:40- They're looking good?- Great, yes.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Fantastic. They've got shiny feathers,

0:07:43 > 0:07:48the skin on their legs is healthy - we've got some happy peacocks.

0:07:52 > 0:07:53My Pet And Me!

0:07:53 > 0:07:57I think the peacocks and peahens here are very lucky

0:07:57 > 0:08:01because there's so much space. What do you think they get up to?

0:08:01 > 0:08:02Running around.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Play hide and seek.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06That sounds like so much fun.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10But if the peacocks and peahens could do absolutely anything,

0:08:10 > 0:08:12what would they do?

0:08:18 > 0:08:20If they could do anything...

0:08:21 > 0:08:27..they would be ballroom dancers.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29They would twirl around and around...

0:08:31 > 0:08:35..and their colourful tails would twinkle in the lights.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45Now the peacocks and peahens are happy, fed and roaming around,

0:08:45 > 0:08:47we should play a game.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50- Yeah!- But we're going to need some friends first.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Come on, friends.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- Hi, Ferne!- Hi, Ferne.- Hi.

0:08:56 > 0:09:01You must be Paris and Greg. I'm so glad you guys could join us.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03Now, I've found lots of peacock feathers

0:09:03 > 0:09:05and I've hidden them in a maze.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Shall we see how many we can find?

0:09:07 > 0:09:09- Yeah!- Shall we do that?

0:09:09 > 0:09:11- Yeah!- OK, let's go, quick!

0:09:19 > 0:09:20This maze is fun!

0:09:23 > 0:09:27I wonder how many peacock feathers they'll find.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29There's one!

0:09:30 > 0:09:32They can't find a way to go!

0:09:34 > 0:09:35Keep your eyes peeled.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Have a look. Have a look.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Well done, everyone.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49Whoo! Well spotted.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08- Do you know what I was thinking that we could make?- What?

0:10:08 > 0:10:09Peacock masks!

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Yeah!

0:10:11 > 0:10:13- Shall we go and do that? - Yeah!- Come on.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23We've got all of the outlines of our masks nice and ready.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25- Do you think they look good?- Yeah.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29- Shall we cut them out?- Yeah.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33- I'm keeping the lines. - You're doing really, really well.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Just a little bit in there.

0:10:35 > 0:10:40Remember to always get help from an adult when using scissors.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44- Shall we start decorating them? - Yeah!

0:10:47 > 0:10:51- I'm putting glitter on the cheeks. - That's lovely.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54That's a really nice idea.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Are you putting a crown on?

0:10:59 > 0:11:00Pompoms on.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04One for there, one for there.

0:11:05 > 0:11:09So the next thing that we need to do, and we cannot forget it...

0:11:09 > 0:11:13- Peacock feathers! - Shall we stick some of these on?

0:11:13 > 0:11:16- Yeah!- Can you tell me what these are called?

0:11:16 > 0:11:18- Eyes. - That's right, they're called eyes.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22They're at the top of the male peacock's feathers.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26- What do you think they do with them? - They show them off to the peahens.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28That is exactly right.

0:11:28 > 0:11:33They can have 150 of these and they just wave them around like that.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36It's like a big hello, isn't it? Look at me!

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Make sure that they're properly stuck down.
