0:01:18 > 0:01:20Today I'm in Chorley to meet Sophie

0:01:20 > 0:01:23and her very wriggly pet, a millipede.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26This is exciting. Come on, let's go and say hello.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34- Hi, Sophie.- Hello, Rory. - And you must be Mum. Hello.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37- Hi, Rory.- Would you like to come in?- Definitely!

0:01:46 > 0:01:47Who is this?

0:01:47 > 0:01:49- Ginger.- Wow.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Shall we get a good look at her?

0:01:51 > 0:01:53- Yes.- Are you going to take her out?

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Wow, what sort of creature is Ginger?

0:02:01 > 0:02:03A Giant African millipede.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05She is absolutely beautiful.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08Look at her wriggling around.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11- How does it feel when she walks on your hand?- Tickly.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13How come you're not laughing, then?

0:02:14 > 0:02:16How quickly does she move?

0:02:16 > 0:02:18- It's quite fast.- Really fast.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21What does she feel like on the back?

0:02:21 > 0:02:24- Hard.- Yeah. - It's got rings.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Yeah, it does, doesn't it? Lots of little segments.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30And her feet, do they feel soft and gentle?

0:02:30 > 0:02:32- Yeah.- She's very gentle indeed.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34- Can I hold on to her, please?- Yeah.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38Now, I know we're having a good look at Ginger just now, but it's

0:02:38 > 0:02:42important not to hold a millipede for too long.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44What an impressive creature.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48She looks a bit like an earthworm on top, with all those segments.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52But then you see these amazing legs wandering along.

0:02:52 > 0:02:53- Yeah.- There are so many.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Millipede actually means 1,000 feet,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59but Ginger doesn't have quite as many as that.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02- It'd be expensive for shoes, wouldn't it?- Yeah.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03Look at all these feet.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Imagine how much you'd have to spend!

0:03:06 > 0:03:10I'd like to get a closer look at Ginger underneath so we can see

0:03:10 > 0:03:14those feet moving, so let's pop her back into this viewing pot, yeah?

0:03:17 > 0:03:19That's it.

0:03:19 > 0:03:20All the way, Ginger.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23This'll let us get a good look.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25- Yeah.- Let's hold it nice and high.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Wow. What does that look like?

0:03:30 > 0:03:33- The sea.- Yeah, all those legs moving like a wave.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Show me a wave with your arm.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41A wave of legs going from the back to the front.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43That is very cool.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45What do you love most about her?

0:03:45 > 0:03:49- She's helpful and she can play with me.- Why is she helpful?

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Because she digs around the soil.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56Like millipedes in this country. We don't have African millipedes,

0:03:56 > 0:03:59- but we've got our own.- Yeah. - They eat all the old food

0:03:59 > 0:04:03and recycle it back into the soil. Nature's recyclers.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07You guys are great. Well, I think she is absolutely magnificent.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Ferne, can you give us some fun facts

0:04:10 > 0:04:14- about our multi-footed millipede friends here?- Of course, Rory.

0:04:15 > 0:04:20One, millipedes breathe through special holes in their tummies.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Two, millipedes have very bad eyesight

0:04:25 > 0:04:28and some types can't see at all.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36Three, the giant African millipede is so big that it has the nickname

0:04:36 > 0:04:38jungle train. Choo-choo!

0:04:45 > 0:04:47- CHILDREN:- Care time.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56There are lots of different kinds of millipede all over the world

0:04:56 > 0:04:59and they all need warm, damp places to live.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01So, if you have them as pets,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03you need to keep them in a special tank.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Do you know what it's called? It's a vivarium.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08That's a special home for animals

0:05:08 > 0:05:11that need to live in warmer temperatures.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14That's perfect, because it keeps Ginger

0:05:14 > 0:05:16nice and cosy while we play hide and seek.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20- Yeah.- Did you know where she's hiding?- Under the bark,

0:05:20 > 0:05:22where she ALWAYS hides!

0:05:22 > 0:05:26- Always? Which one? This one? - The biggest one.- That one?- Yeah.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Let's have a look and see if you're right.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31You were. There she is!

0:05:31 > 0:05:35There we go, well done. Now, we have got lots of food here.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38- What have we got?- Strawberries,

0:05:38 > 0:05:42mushrooms, cucumber and apple core.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Now, this apple core looks a bit brown.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49Is this what we should be feeding your pet? Why?

0:05:49 > 0:05:53Because a millipede likes rotten food and normal food.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55That's pretty cool, isn't it?

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Millipede are detritivores,

0:05:57 > 0:05:59which means they eat dead or dying plants,

0:05:59 > 0:06:02but they still need new food from time to time.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06Let's start chopping some of this stuff. What you going for?

0:06:06 > 0:06:09- Strawberry.- OK, I'm going to do some mushrooms.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16OK. I'm going to do one of these apple cores.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21Good. Some cucumber now.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25Right, you do one more mushroom and then we'll pop all this in.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29- We don't want her having too much, do we?- She'll get fat!

0:06:31 > 0:06:35Shall we hide the food in there, then Ginger comes and finds it?

0:06:35 > 0:06:37That is a brilliant idea.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41Let's see where we can hide it. Where shall we put them, here?

0:06:41 > 0:06:44In the soil. One can go on top...

0:06:44 > 0:06:47of a piece of bark.

0:06:47 > 0:06:48One under.

0:06:50 > 0:06:51Then one in a corner.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55What should I do with these mushrooms? Treat it like a pizza

0:06:55 > 0:06:57and sprinkle them on top?

0:06:57 > 0:06:59- Yeah.- Sprinkle, sprinkle.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01- What is this here?- Cuttlefish.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03Why do you have that in the tank?

0:07:03 > 0:07:09- So it can give the millipede calcium.- Yes, excellent.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13Millipedes have a hard outside shell, called an exoskeleton,

0:07:13 > 0:07:17a bit like the bones of our body, but on the outside, and the calcium

0:07:17 > 0:07:21from cuttlefish bones help keep that strong. How often do you feed her?

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- Once a week.- OK.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Right, that looks good. Anything else we need to do?

0:07:26 > 0:07:30Go outside and get some moss and bark and stuff to play on.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Oh, great, let's go and get it.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Some bark. These are good, aren't they?

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Right, let's take them back.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55Oh, look. Some nice damp moss.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58That's ideal. Right, come on, let's go this way.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08Dead leaves - perfect.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Right. Let's pop all this stuff in.

0:08:22 > 0:08:27- Where will I put it?- Put the bark over this corner, because we're

0:08:27 > 0:08:29making a playground for the floor.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35OK, now...leaves or moss?

0:08:35 > 0:08:39Leaves. So the leaves go over this area.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45Then you put the moss around that.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47- On top of this one?- Yeah.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53- Well, I think that looks fantastic. What do you think?- It's good.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- Will Ginger like it?- Yeah.- Shall we let her have a look?- Yes.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00Let's lift this up and see if she wants to come and have a look see?

0:09:00 > 0:09:04I think Ginger loves her new play park.

0:09:04 > 0:09:05Good job!

0:09:09 > 0:09:12- CHILDREN:- Wash your hands!

0:09:12 > 0:09:16- I think Ginger will enjoy those apple cores, don't you?- Yes.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19If you had as many legs as Ginger, what would you do?

0:09:19 > 0:09:22- I'd play football. - That sounds like fun!

0:09:22 > 0:09:27If Ginger could do anything, what do you think she would do?

0:09:27 > 0:09:30DRUMROLL

0:09:30 > 0:09:32If my pet could do anything,

0:09:32 > 0:09:35she would play basketball,

0:09:35 > 0:09:36with a giant ball.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41And pass it along all her legs...

0:09:43 > 0:09:45..keeping it up in the air.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50Then she'd do a handstand,

0:09:50 > 0:09:54with all her legs waving in the air.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02Sophie, I love your idea of playing football if you had as many legs as

0:10:02 > 0:10:07- Ginger but I still don't know what I'D do.- I've got an idea.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10- Oh, what is it?- Follow me.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19- Look at all these people! Hi, everyone. ALL:- Hi, Rory!

0:10:19 > 0:10:23- What are they all doing here? - We're playing millipede football

0:10:23 > 0:10:26- on the football pitch. - Oh, that sounds like fun.

0:10:26 > 0:10:27Let's get started!

0:10:27 > 0:10:32Sophie and her school friends need to get their team bibs on first.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34OK, guys, it's millipede time.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37We need the head up here - that's you, Sophie.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39We've got to pop the antennae on.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43Looks marvellous. There's one ball and you all have to act as one

0:10:43 > 0:10:47millipede. You need to try and get this ball in that goal.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50- Are you ready? ALL:- Yeah!

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Let's do this!

0:10:54 > 0:10:57Go! Go, millipede, go on!

0:10:57 > 0:10:58Go.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Goal!

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Next one, I'm going to header it out. Go, millipede!

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Another goal!

0:11:12 > 0:11:14Let's go, the goal is up here.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18The millipede's running down the pitch. That's it, stay together,

0:11:18 > 0:11:19stay together, millipede.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23Oh, goal!

0:11:23 > 0:11:25Yes!

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Right, guys, everybody line up.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31That's good. What we'll try now is to make a big spiral.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35When a millipede is frightened, it curls up into a tight spiral.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39- Think you can do that? ALL:- Yeah!

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Team leader, go - let's make a spiral!

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Slowly, slowly, slowly.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48Well done, perfect - just like a millipede

0:11:48 > 0:11:50when it's curled up into a tight spiral,

0:11:50 > 0:11:54with its head in the middle and its hard shell on the outside.

0:11:54 > 0:11:55Nice and safe. Well done.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59- Have you had fun being a millipede today? ALL:- Yeah!

0:12:01 > 0:12:04I've had great fun being a millipede today.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08- I can't wait to tell Ginger all about it. ALL:- Yeah!

0:12:12 > 0:12:13Oh, Ginger,

0:12:13 > 0:12:17you should have seen how much fun we had this afternoon.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Sophie, thank you for introducing me

0:12:19 > 0:12:22to your millipede, Ginger. She's brilliant.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Thank you for coming, Rory.

0:12:25 > 0:12:26You are welcome.

0:12:33 > 0:12:38- Hi, Ferne. Hi, Bagel.- Hi, Rory. Looks like you've had a great day.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- What have you been up to? - It was awesome. I had so much fun

0:12:41 > 0:12:45- with my new friends.- Fantastic. I've been giving Bagel a brush.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49- She looks great.- Thanks! - Pets are brilliant, but remember,

0:12:49 > 0:12:52don't touch an animal unless the owner says it's OK.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55But two pets you CAN play with are ours.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Go on the CBeebies website and play the My Pet And Me game.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Thanks for joining us. We hope you've had fun, too.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06# Today we met

0:13:12 > 0:13:15# Thank you so much for sharing them

0:13:15 > 0:13:18# Time for us to

0:13:19 > 0:13:21# Just remind you

0:13:21 > 0:13:24# After you've played with your pet

0:13:24 > 0:13:28# Wash your hands, don't forget!

0:13:28 > 0:13:31# It doesn't matter what pet you've got

0:13:31 > 0:13:33# You might have one, you might not

0:13:33 > 0:13:36# It's still fun finding out

0:13:36 > 0:13:40# What having a pet is all about

0:13:40 > 0:13:42# My pet, my pet and me
