:01:54. > :01:58.Hi, my name is Jersey and this is my school.
:01:58. > :02:02.Everyone gets nervous starting a new secondary school, but it can be
:02:02. > :02:08.harder for those of us who stand out from the crowd. I remember
:02:08. > :02:12.being really nervous. I'm awe autistic which makes me different
:02:12. > :02:17.from most kids. I find it it difficult being around lots of
:02:17. > :02:21.people. I can be sensitive. In this programme, I'm going to find out
:02:21. > :02:26.about how some of you feel about moving up into secondary school and
:02:26. > :02:32.hear some amazing stories about how other kids coped with it.
:02:32. > :02:36.On the first day of my school, I was worried I would get bullied.
:02:37. > :02:42.I was worried that I would be quite lonely.
:02:42. > :02:47.I was thinking, "How am I going to get through this this?" It was OK
:02:47. > :02:51.in the end, I I loved it. Come with me and discover, whoever
:02:51. > :03:00.you are, this huge moment which you might have been dreading can be the
:03:00. > :03:04.best thing ever. No one likes to admit it, but
:03:04. > :03:09.everyone has worries about going to secondary school. In Scotland, the
:03:09. > :03:12.new term started a few weeks ago. These guys know how the first day
:03:12. > :03:17.feels. I couldn't sleep at all last night.
:03:17. > :03:21.I was really excited, but a little nervous in case I get lost.
:03:21. > :03:25.There is a lot of people, more than primary.
:03:25. > :03:31.I didn't really fit in at my last school.
:03:31. > :03:35.Pretty scary. I am now in year ten, but it can be
:03:35. > :03:39.nerve-wracking if you are different. Sometimes because of my autism I
:03:39. > :03:44.can't concentrate and sometimes even worse, the teachers think I am
:03:44. > :03:49.being rude and they get alangry. However, -- angry. However since
:03:50. > :03:53.they know it is not the the case. So it is best to tell people about
:03:53. > :03:58.yourself straightaway. When I was standing outside the
:03:58. > :04:01.gates of high school, I was thinking, "How am I going to get
:04:01. > :04:07.through this?" The children are bigger than in primary school. I
:04:07. > :04:16.thought, "This is going to be bad.". My name is Daniel. I am 12 and I
:04:16. > :04:20.have restricted growth. I am 1.2 meters tall which is under
:04:20. > :04:25.four foot. At primary school, there were a lot younger children and
:04:25. > :04:30.they don't understand. They just used to wit per to their friends or
:04:30. > :04:35.something -- whisper to their friends and call me nastly names
:04:35. > :04:40.like a midget and laugh at me. I felt really sad and upset.
:04:40. > :04:45.When I was going to move up to high school, I thought it would be the
:04:45. > :04:50.same with people making fun of me. I was trying to say I didn't want
:04:50. > :04:55.to go to school to my dad. My feign fears he was a small
:04:55. > :05:05.person going into a big world. That's why we did the letter for
:05:05. > :05:05.
:05:05. > :05:08.the school. Because of his size children and adults might treat
:05:08. > :05:10.Daniel as though he is younger than he is.
:05:10. > :05:14.However, there will be occasions when he will need help.
:05:14. > :05:20.Thank you in advance for your support in helping all our children
:05:20. > :05:25.to have a happy and fulfilling life at school and beyond.
:05:25. > :05:29.I felt very pleased about sending the letter, but when I was standing
:05:29. > :05:33.outside the gates of high school, my dad had just dropped me and I'm
:05:33. > :05:40.really nervous. I don't know what to do. I don't know where to go. I
:05:40. > :05:47.was wrig and was crying and I held on to my dad, "I don't want to go.
:05:47. > :05:51.I don't want to go." I thought it was going to be as bad as I thought,
:05:51. > :05:55.but it was OK in the end. Since they sent that letter, all the
:05:55. > :06:02.people, they understand about my condition. They don't mind helping
:06:02. > :06:06.me at all. A lot of children in the upper years were given him high
:06:06. > :06:11.fives saying, "We'll look out for you." I thought he might be a bit
:06:11. > :06:14.different, but once you get to know him, he is another friend.
:06:14. > :06:18.He is funny. You can trust him.
:06:18. > :06:27.A good player at hide-and-seek. He is a really good friend.
:06:27. > :06:34.I don't want to be tall. I love my condition. I loved it. It has been
:06:34. > :06:39.great. Daniel were very worried -- like
:06:39. > :06:41.Daniel my mum and dad were worried about me moving up into secondary
:06:41. > :06:47.school. We had to say goodbye at the door.
:06:47. > :06:54.That was hard because I walked you down to school.
:06:54. > :07:03.You stalked me! But you spotted me in the hedgerow!
:07:03. > :07:05.Once I was at school, I believed everybody told the trust and meant
:07:05. > :07:12.what they said, but that wasn't always the case.
:07:12. > :07:15.Because of my autism, students sometimes treat me like a baby
:07:15. > :07:20.which can be frustrating, but some kids who stand out, can have a
:07:20. > :07:23.tougher time than I did. Secondary school can be a scary prospect and
:07:23. > :07:28.one of the biggest worries is bullying.
:07:28. > :07:31.On my first day of going to high school, my worry would I get
:07:31. > :07:34.bullied because I was different. I didn't think I would make any new
:07:34. > :07:38.friends. This is Calum, he is 12 years old
:07:38. > :07:45.and and like me, he looks like any other kid his age. But problems
:07:45. > :07:55.with his eyesight made life at school difficult. I have got a
:07:55. > :07:59.
:08:00. > :08:05.number of conditions. My eyes are bad because of the
:08:05. > :08:10.connection with the brain from the eye. If you like show me like a
:08:10. > :08:15.busy picture with a cat in the middle, I probably wouldn't see it
:08:15. > :08:20.or I would see it, but as something different. Before I went to high
:08:20. > :08:24.school, I did worry about standing out because if I got bullied
:08:24. > :08:28.because I wouldn't be able to see if I approached people and if they
:08:28. > :08:35.were coming to bully you or coming to be your friend or something. It
:08:35. > :08:42.was just a blur of colour. Calum settled in in well on his first day,
:08:42. > :08:46.but his poor eyesight soon caused him problems outs of the classroom.
:08:46. > :08:49.People take advantage of my eyesight. It makes me feel singled
:08:49. > :08:54.out. 123450 when he had difficult
:08:54. > :08:59.situations at school, it makes him stressed and he gets angry and
:08:59. > :09:03.sometimes doesn't want to go to school. It has been like quite
:09:03. > :09:07.upsetting because it is me, like they have been doing it at me and
:09:08. > :09:13.they used to do it a lot. Thankfully the school stepped in
:09:13. > :09:19.and sorted out the bullying. Since then, things have been better
:09:19. > :09:22.for Calum and he has got confident enough to cycle through the park to
:09:22. > :09:27.school, with a little help from his friends.
:09:27. > :09:32.When I was diagnosed with my eye conditions, the doctors told my mum
:09:32. > :09:38.I wouldn't be able to cycle. My mum pushed me to cycle when I was young.
:09:38. > :09:42.My friends help me out by telling me if there is someone in front of
:09:43. > :09:49.me or telling me where we are going, rather than leaving me with no clue
:09:49. > :09:54.with where we are going. I'm not going let my eyesight hold me back.
:09:54. > :09:59.Life Life can be tough for kids who are zirch and I should know. -- all
:09:59. > :10:05.the kids in my family stand out for one reason or another. My brother
:10:05. > :10:08.has autism, while my sister has a rare condition which means she has
:10:08. > :10:12.physical problems and learning difficulties.
:10:12. > :10:16.I was born into a family with special needs and I didn't think it
:10:17. > :10:21.was that big a deal until I realised that not everybody lives
:10:21. > :10:26.with these disabilities. I love them. I love love them very much,
:10:26. > :10:33.but for families like us, even going out for a meal meal can bring
:10:33. > :10:38.a set of problems. People look at Daisy and Lenny and
:10:38. > :10:41.they point like they haven't seen a disabled person before and it
:10:41. > :10:47.really hurts his feelings. It can be tough when you stand out
:10:47. > :10:57.in public. And one of the most public public places in the world
:10:57. > :10:57.
:10:57. > :11:02.is school. Meet Aya, she has cerebral palsy. A
:11:02. > :11:12.condition that affects her co- ordination and movement.
:11:12. > :11:12.
:11:12. > :11:22.I was born premature. My head got squashed when I was born and that
:11:22. > :11:23.
:11:23. > :11:32.damaged my control system and I have cerebral palsy and I'm 13.
:11:32. > :11:41.I feel frustrated that I can't run about and jump and skip and do most
:11:41. > :11:47.things that a normal 13-year-old can do. When I'm getting about and
:11:47. > :11:57.not in my chair, I tend to crawl on the floor like a soldier when they
:11:57. > :11:59.
:11:59. > :12:06.are trying to sneak up on someone. I went to a special school in which
:12:06. > :12:13.I made quite a few good friends. But because she was doing so well
:12:14. > :12:17.in special school, Aya left many of the friends behind, making the move
:12:17. > :12:22.to secondary school. Before I went to high school, I had
:12:22. > :12:28.a number of good friends. The amount of homework I was going to
:12:28. > :12:34.get, the amount of children, whether I was going to fit in or
:12:34. > :12:44.not because of the way I look. I was worried that socially I was
:12:44. > :12:47.
:12:48. > :12:53.going to be quite lonely. They don't have have the facilities that
:12:53. > :12:59.special schools have and in a way, by throwing her into the cold
:12:59. > :13:09.water... Thanks. By throwing her into the cold water,
:13:09. > :13:12.
:13:12. > :13:17.sometimes you would be surprised of the ability that she does have..
:13:17. > :13:22.first day, I was a mixture of excitement and nervous. One of the
:13:22. > :13:28.staff came up and gave me a big hug. I remember she she came back home.
:13:28. > :13:35.She had a big smile on her face. So that was a good thing. There was a
:13:35. > :13:45.smile of, "OK. It is not that scary as I thought it was. I'm still
:13:45. > :13:46.
:13:46. > :13:55.alive. I'm still here." At school everybody was a bit wary.
:13:55. > :14:05.They were talking to me. It's still difficult, but I thought it would
:14:05. > :14:07.
:14:07. > :14:17.be a lot worse. I think the ice is breaking. I get
:14:17. > :14:17.
:14:17. > :14:27.a lot more "hi" I'm not scared. I'm a normal person and they're
:14:27. > :14:30.
:14:30. > :14:35.beginning to like me which I'm happy about. I'm happy about that.
:14:35. > :14:37.Life in a new secondary school can be tough, but the good news is most
:14:37. > :14:41.problems disappear after just a few days.
:14:41. > :14:48.It has been a week since I started secondry school and it has been
:14:48. > :14:52.very good. I am happy to go to school every morning.
:14:52. > :14:56.The night bifer started second the night before I started secondary
