0:00:02 > 0:00:05Thieves will steal our cars, our valuables,

0:00:05 > 0:00:09just about anything they can get their hands on.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11To cut down on crime and anti-social behaviour,

0:00:11 > 0:00:15police and other agencies are using new technology and tactics

0:00:15 > 0:00:19when the bad guys are actually getting caught in the act.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21I can see the man actually commit a robbery. Lovely.

0:00:21 > 0:00:22Thank you very much.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26Local councils, shops and businesses are laying some traps of their own.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Why should we feel frightened for the rest of our lives?

0:00:29 > 0:00:33And the general public, too, can help unsuspecting crooks get their comeuppance.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35No way are you getting away.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39- We did it for everyone else as well, that she might be stealing from. - We will name and shame you.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43So anyone who is up to no good had better think twice.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46They might just get caught red-handed.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Today, a tale of shops and robbers.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59A crowd of thieves arrive suddenly to bamboozle a shopkeeper.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02- They called me here, called me there. - And they have a hidden purpose.

0:01:02 > 0:01:07It wasn't a shoplifting. The real target of the gang was to get into the flat to take

0:01:07 > 0:01:10the money and take the jewellery.

0:01:10 > 0:01:11Also today:

0:01:11 > 0:01:14What do you do when people dump rubbish on your doorstep?

0:01:14 > 0:01:17We had the camera in this particular location here.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20An angling club goes fishing for fly-tippers

0:01:20 > 0:01:22and hooks a couple of crooks.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27And jewellery robbers make a quick getaway but not quick enough,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30because they can't outrun the cameras.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45The beautiful South Wales countryside.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49In one of the valleys sits a small village called Cilfynydd.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53This convenience store usually serves the locals and a few tourists.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58It doesn't normally have more than three or four customers at once.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02But all of a sudden, this one day in March, business is booming.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Customers just keep flooding in.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08A few days later, a different shop

0:02:08 > 0:02:12but a similar-looking crowd of customers arrive all at once.

0:02:12 > 0:02:17Good for takings, you'd think. Well, yes. But not for the shopkeeper.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21It's this gang that's doing the taking, because they're thieves.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23The gang were very confident in what they did.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Straightaway, they would engage the shopkeeper behind the counter.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29While the shop owner is distracted, one of them

0:02:29 > 0:02:31sneaks into the flat above the shop.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37These aren't shoplifters - they're actually burglars.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40But luckily, the shop security camera captures the moment

0:02:40 > 0:02:46she goes up to the flat. And when she comes out again a little later.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48We'll see shortly what happens next.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54But first, back to Cilfynydd, where Anoma

0:02:54 > 0:02:57and her family have lived above their shop for 26 years.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01People are so nice in our neighbourhood.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05Sometimes I feel like I'm in one of those television dramas.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08They've got a shop and everyone comes and tells their stories

0:03:08 > 0:03:11and that's what we are staying here for this long.

0:03:11 > 0:03:12But one quiet morning,

0:03:12 > 0:03:17the shop is the scene of events that really ARE a bit like a TV drama.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21Just reading my newspaper and then suddenly, two ladies came

0:03:21 > 0:03:24and they said "Hello", and I said "Hello",

0:03:24 > 0:03:27and then they said they were just going to move to my neighbourhood.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30But there's not much time for friendly chitchat, as things

0:03:30 > 0:03:32get very busy.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34I can see more people coming and then there's more people

0:03:34 > 0:03:39all together inside the shop, men and women, about eight of them.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Everybody wants something now. "Excuse me!

0:03:41 > 0:03:46"Can I have this, can I have that?" Or "I need help" or, you know, they don't really say that, they're

0:03:46 > 0:03:50just like, doing sign language to call me here, call me there like that.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54It's all a bit much. But at least it should be a profitable day.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57They've all got a £20 note in their hand,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00so I thought, well, they've got money, they're not going to rob me.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Don't worry, just carry on serving, and that's what I did.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Ten minutes later, they've all gone.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Anoma settles back into her usual routine

0:04:08 > 0:04:11and then her family returns from school.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14When my children come home and suddenly she said, "Mummy!

0:04:14 > 0:04:15"Somebody's gone into my room."

0:04:15 > 0:04:19I said, "Who's going to go to your room? Nobody is going to go into your room."

0:04:19 > 0:04:22"No, somebody's been in my room," she keeps telling,

0:04:22 > 0:04:25"and they just pulled everything" and I said, "Nobody is going to pull...

0:04:25 > 0:04:30"It is the way you left your room," I said, "unless it's a ghost," I said.

0:04:30 > 0:04:35It's no ghost, but she does get another visitation.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39Two days later, the gang comes back again but this time, Anoma

0:04:39 > 0:04:41spots something suspicious.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Out of the corner of my eye,

0:04:44 > 0:04:47I saw one lady is coming out of my private door

0:04:47 > 0:04:48and then I was like,

0:04:48 > 0:04:54"Oh, my God, how can you go inside my private door without my permission?"

0:04:54 > 0:04:58And then all the other ladies gathered around me and said, "No, no, she's pregnant.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01"She is pregnant, she needs to go to the toilet." I said,

0:05:01 > 0:05:05"Whether you need to go to the toilet or not, you should get my permission.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07"This is my private door, that is.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10"You can't just go in." And then only just clicked me,

0:05:10 > 0:05:14and I just grabbed the phone and dialled 999.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16And they all just disappeared.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20Anoma rushes upstairs to check the room where her money is kept.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Thankfully, the door to that room is still locked.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27If they'd got into my room, well, we haven't got anything left at all.

0:05:27 > 0:05:33We'll probably end up in the street. We haven't got no money to pay our bills or nothing.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36The police arrive quickly and scour the shop for fingerprints

0:05:36 > 0:05:40and they also take away a copy of the CCTV footage.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44The case lands on the desk of Detective Sergeant Daniel Michel

0:05:44 > 0:05:47who's been dealing with similar reports across Pontypridd.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49We had six burglaries in quick succession,

0:05:49 > 0:05:54primarily village shops owned by families who

0:05:54 > 0:05:56lived above the shop or in a flat adjacent to the shop.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00The victims didn't automatically know that they'd been burgled.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02It wasn't until they'd gone upstairs later on in the night,

0:06:02 > 0:06:06then they discovered that some things had been moved around,

0:06:06 > 0:06:08and then they noticed there was stuff missing.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10Although her money was safe, the family

0:06:10 > 0:06:13did lose some jewellery, including a diamond watch

0:06:13 > 0:06:17she had given to her daughter on her 18th birthday.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21The robbers also left Anoma with a fear that she had never felt before.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24We are even scared to leave the shop and go anywhere now,

0:06:24 > 0:06:27because those days we could just shut the shop, put the alarm and go,

0:06:27 > 0:06:30but now we are really worried and concerned

0:06:30 > 0:06:33whether these people are going to come any time again.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35These victims are key in our communities,

0:06:35 > 0:06:37they provide a service to the rest of the communities living there,

0:06:37 > 0:06:40in that they are their local village shop.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43So, for other people living around there that find out what's happened,

0:06:43 > 0:06:46it causes a bit of fear and concern right throughout that community.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50Later, Daniel puts together a dedicated team

0:06:50 > 0:06:54to sift through hours of CCTV footage.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58The cameras enabled us to see exactly what happened.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00This footage here was crucial to us.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04This gang is about to find out that there's no safety in numbers.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15They can be large gangs, they can be single operators -

0:07:15 > 0:07:18distraction thieves use many different guises

0:07:18 > 0:07:21and lots of different techniques to try and fool us -

0:07:21 > 0:07:24so, what should we be looking out for?

0:07:24 > 0:07:27If somebody, when you're out in public, bumps into you,

0:07:27 > 0:07:29stops to ask for directions

0:07:29 > 0:07:31or tries to sell anything to you,

0:07:31 > 0:07:35just be very conscious of your valuables and protect them.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Keep your wits about you. Make sure that if someone bumps into you in the street,

0:07:38 > 0:07:41approaches you at a table, particularly if they've got a map,

0:07:41 > 0:07:43newspaper, or something to cover the table,

0:07:43 > 0:07:46that they're not stealing your phone, purse or wallet.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50Keep valuable items secure in your pocket or zipped up in a handbag.

0:07:50 > 0:07:55A classic trick is for somebody to place a map or magazine

0:07:55 > 0:07:57in front of you, and whilst they're

0:07:57 > 0:08:00talking to you and shielding your eyes,

0:08:00 > 0:08:02their hands will be in your bag.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05We're not asking people to be paranoid -

0:08:05 > 0:08:07just be vigilant.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Next, we meet a gang of thieves who set out to steal some watches.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19It turns out they certainly needed a bit more time...

0:08:19 > 0:08:21to plan things better.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23We're in Maidstone, Kent,

0:08:23 > 0:08:25and obscured from view behind this street sign

0:08:25 > 0:08:28are two men dressed in white decorator's suits.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31But they're not here to paint the jewellery store -

0:08:31 > 0:08:33they're here to rob it.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36They smash through the windows and are helping themselves

0:08:36 > 0:08:38to 13 brand-new Rolex watches.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41But a sharp-eyed council CCTV camera operator

0:08:41 > 0:08:45has them in her sights, and she's alerted the police.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49Although this heist may look like a professional job,

0:08:49 > 0:08:52it's about to become decidedly...amateur.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55One of these bungling burglars is in such a rush,

0:08:55 > 0:08:57he drops part of the loot.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59You'd think this gang would now

0:08:59 > 0:09:03screech away from the scene of the crime - like in the movies!

0:09:03 > 0:09:06But no - they drive off slowly,

0:09:06 > 0:09:08stopping at the lights and helpfully

0:09:08 > 0:09:10indicating which way they're going next.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14With the registration number recorded by the CCTV cameras,

0:09:14 > 0:09:17the police are soon ready to pounce.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20POLICE SIREN SOUNDS

0:09:20 > 0:09:23The patrol car pulls up on the driver's side

0:09:23 > 0:09:25and manages to detain two of the thieves.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27But the passenger makes a run for it.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31The chase is on.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35He may have lost his loot of watches,

0:09:35 > 0:09:37but this particular time bandit

0:09:37 > 0:09:41looks set to clock up a personal best in cross-country running!

0:09:41 > 0:09:44That policeman's doing pretty well, too,

0:09:44 > 0:09:46though he's not exactly dressed for speed.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51Further on, the robber has now lost his pursuer,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54and tries to lose his distinctive uniform.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57He thinks he's got time to stop and undress,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00and the last thing he wants is to be caught with his trousers down.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03But what he doesn't know is that the council CCTV operators

0:10:03 > 0:10:06are STILL watching his every move,

0:10:06 > 0:10:08and while he's performing his striptease,

0:10:08 > 0:10:11the police are able to close in.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15In just four minutes after the robbery,

0:10:15 > 0:10:17all three gang members are arrested.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23And they are jailed for a total of 16 years between them.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28So, they may not have got away with stealing the watches,

0:10:28 > 0:10:30but those crooks will know about doing time,

0:10:30 > 0:10:32thanks to some quick-thinking

0:10:32 > 0:10:35CCTV operators and some well-placed cameras.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37You can run, but if you're on the wrong side of the law,

0:10:37 > 0:10:40sometimes, ya just can't hide!

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Coming up on Caught Red Handed...

0:10:43 > 0:10:47Here's some food for thought. Next time you order a pizza,

0:10:47 > 0:10:50best check no-one's eaten it before you.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53And this man makes a meal of a jewellery heist -

0:10:53 > 0:10:55literally.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57He swallows the evidence!

0:10:59 > 0:11:03And in Wales, police close in on the gang terrorising shop owners.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06This footage here was crucial to us.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22This is Shotton Pond in County Durham -

0:11:22 > 0:11:26a quiet little spot, popular with wildlife and fishermen alike.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29The lake is really well established. It is really, really pretty.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31We have wild otters, we have great crested newts,

0:11:31 > 0:11:35salamanders, everything what you would wish in an area like this.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37It looks like the perfect place to

0:11:37 > 0:11:39unwind and enjoy the wonders of nature.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46But these two visitors aren't here to enjoy the scenery.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50They're here to ruin it.

0:11:50 > 0:11:51I can't imagine why anyone would

0:11:51 > 0:11:55want to dump that waste in that location. It's beautiful.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59They are fly-tipping, with no regard for the law.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02It's a problem that is out of control, and is even threatening

0:12:02 > 0:12:04to close down the local angling club.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07People will just see the general site, then they will turn round

0:12:07 > 0:12:10and drive away, then I'll get a phone call saying, "Stevie,

0:12:10 > 0:12:13"I'm afraid I'm going to drop out the angling club."

0:12:13 > 0:12:15The council decide to take action.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18We had the camera in this particular location here...

0:12:18 > 0:12:22One tiny camera will help bring this beautiful area

0:12:22 > 0:12:24back to the people who appreciate it the most.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Fisherman Stephen Maitland absolutely loves his home town.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37He's the chairman of the Shotton and District Angling Club.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40I've got a lot of passion for this area.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43I've been involved with the angling club since I was the age of 12.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45But for the last decade,

0:12:45 > 0:12:49it's not just been the fish that Stephen's been trying to catch.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55The fly-tipping began round about 13 years ago,

0:12:55 > 0:12:59and we've had garden furniture, house furniture, sofas,

0:12:59 > 0:13:01bedding etc, mattresses...

0:13:01 > 0:13:05The blight on the area is so bad, Stephen believes it's the reason

0:13:05 > 0:13:09his beloved angling club is on the verge of closing down.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13Almost 80% of its members have drifted away over ten years.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16It just makes you feel depressed, and...

0:13:16 > 0:13:20wondering whether I need to chuck the towel in.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22And it's not just Shotton Pond.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Fly-tipping is a problem throughout the county.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27In 2012, there were a staggering

0:13:27 > 0:13:325,904 incidents of fly-tipping reported across County Durham.

0:13:35 > 0:13:3945 minutes south of Shotton is the village of Headlam,

0:13:39 > 0:13:43home to farmer Simon Robinson and his wife Joanna.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47They, too, have been victims on a quite jaw-dropping scale.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50My husband first heard about the fly-tipping in the morning,

0:13:50 > 0:13:53so we jumped in the pick-up and off we went down to the field -

0:13:53 > 0:13:55just couldn't believe it when we got there.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00It's a truly shocking sight -

0:14:00 > 0:14:04thousands of old VHS cassettes were strewn across their field.

0:14:04 > 0:14:0812,000-13,000 videos, er...

0:14:08 > 0:14:11videos of all description, from the Bond box set

0:14:11 > 0:14:13to, er, exercise videos...

0:14:13 > 0:14:15- SpongeBob SquarePants!- Yes, yes.

0:14:15 > 0:14:20The stretch of videos probably went for about...40ft.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22The vast expanse of VHSs had been

0:14:22 > 0:14:26unceremoniously dumped on Simon and Joanna's field overnight.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28Even their nephew's excitement

0:14:28 > 0:14:30at the unexpected booty was short-lived.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34He's used to DVDs, so didn't quite know what a video was.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37Nothing to play it on these days, so they were no use to anybody.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40The most frustrating thing is the fact that if they'd done it

0:14:40 > 0:14:41on that side of the hedge,

0:14:41 > 0:14:43the council would have had to clean it up,

0:14:43 > 0:14:46and on this side of the hedge, that means that I have to clean it up.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50Er, so, yes, it was definitely anger to start with...

0:14:50 > 0:14:52Unless the person actually gets caught

0:14:52 > 0:14:56doing the fly-tipping, nothing can really be done.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00Which is why a little CCTV camera can be a powerful tool

0:15:00 > 0:15:03in the fight against this type of crime.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07Back at Shotton Pond, council worker Ian Hoult has taken it upon himself

0:15:07 > 0:15:09to put an end to fly-tipping.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12After listening to the pleas of the angling club,

0:15:12 > 0:15:15his plan is to reel in the culprits.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18So, each individual site is assessed

0:15:18 > 0:15:21for where we're going to put, er, cameras.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25Here at Shotton Pond, there is literally a single road in and out.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29But where do you plant the camera in such a huge area?

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Well, a bit like anglers do,

0:15:31 > 0:15:34Ian hunts about for a spot that gives him better odds

0:15:34 > 0:15:36of landing a big catch.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39Here, the area opens up a bit, which gave them their opportunity

0:15:39 > 0:15:43to turn around, and then they came back and parked up here,

0:15:43 > 0:15:46essentially to be able to throw off their waste.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49So, we had the camera in this particular location here,

0:15:49 > 0:15:53and they literally threw those... those flags straight at the camera.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59Ian really couldn't have picked a more perfect spot.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02A van pulls up.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Two men get out to dispose of their unwanted load.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10The very first paving slab almost hits the camera

0:16:10 > 0:16:13and it wobbles under the shock wave.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Without any regard for their surroundings,

0:16:19 > 0:16:21they continue to chuck their rubbish out of the back.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24Anywhere will do.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28I can't imagine why anybody would want to do that in the first

0:16:28 > 0:16:31instance. I certainly... It doesn't even cross my mind.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34As you can tell, it took no time at all to be able to dump that waste -

0:16:34 > 0:16:36and then they're off again.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38So, you know, I can't imagine why

0:16:38 > 0:16:41anybody would want to dump that waste in that location.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43It's beautiful...

0:16:43 > 0:16:45It's an ugly scene in a beautiful location -

0:16:45 > 0:16:47but it's good news for Ian.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50Some of the footage that we used

0:16:50 > 0:16:53was really useful, in terms of taking it to the police,

0:16:53 > 0:16:57and through that, we were able to identify

0:16:57 > 0:16:59the individuals that were concerned.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08Thanks to the CCTV evidence, these two were fined a combined total

0:17:08 > 0:17:13of £635, and ordered to pay costs of a further £760.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21Ian gave angling club chairman Stephen Maitland

0:17:21 > 0:17:23the news he had been hoping for.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27I got a knock on the door off the council, who had said,

0:17:27 > 0:17:31"We have caught two fly-tippers on camera."

0:17:31 > 0:17:34And I thought, that's really, really good news.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37From that point, I knew then I had something to work on...

0:17:37 > 0:17:41to get the momentum going, get the wheels in motion,

0:17:41 > 0:17:44to get further things done to stop any further damage,

0:17:44 > 0:17:46any further fly-tipping.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49And it was through the cameras - that actually was the turnaround

0:17:49 > 0:17:51for our salvation of the angling club.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54And the clean-up continues throughout the county.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56On Simon and Joanna's farm,

0:17:56 > 0:17:59the makeshift video library has been relocated.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02When the council came to clear it up,

0:18:02 > 0:18:06they came in several vehicles, with the cages over the back,

0:18:06 > 0:18:09and they filled two or three of those, I think.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12A local rubbish collector admitted taking the videos

0:18:12 > 0:18:14from a second-hand shop, but says

0:18:14 > 0:18:17he then passed them onto someone else to dispose of.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21He admitted breaching the Environment Protection Act,

0:18:21 > 0:18:26and magistrates fined him £143 and ordered him to pay £350 in costs.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Joanna still can't believe the audacity of the fly-tippers.

0:18:30 > 0:18:31I wouldn't go to somebody's house

0:18:31 > 0:18:35and just dump a bag of rubbish in their front garden. Erm...

0:18:35 > 0:18:38And you know, it's just sickening.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40This is what Durham's about, it's beautiful.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43It's a beautiful location - and Durham's a beautiful place.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47With the county's fly-tipping problem on the wane,

0:18:47 > 0:18:51Stephen is angling for a better future for his fishing club.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55The council have installed a gate which only lets in its members.

0:18:55 > 0:18:56Ex-members or new members

0:18:56 > 0:18:59are now coming in in droves to rejoin the angling club.

0:18:59 > 0:19:04As we speak, I'm actually on 112 members,

0:19:04 > 0:19:08so I'm up 22 from this time last year,

0:19:08 > 0:19:11and members are still coming in, so it's looking good for the future.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18Nothing beats a good takeaway every now and again,

0:19:18 > 0:19:21and it's even better when you get it delivered right to your front door.

0:19:21 > 0:19:26Mind you, after watching this, you might want to pick it up yourself.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35The man entering this lift is delivering a pizza.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38He presses the button, and as soon as the door closes,

0:19:38 > 0:19:41he unzips the bag and takes out the box.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43He then, lo and behold,

0:19:43 > 0:19:46starts to tuck into the tasty toppings himself.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Let's call him Peter Piper. Why?

0:19:50 > 0:19:54Because he picks a peck of pepperoni evenly from each separate slice.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57With the lift fast approaching the right floor,

0:19:57 > 0:20:00he closes the box and puts it back.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Spare a thought at this point for the hungry person

0:20:03 > 0:20:06waiting for their yummy fresh pizza to arrive.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09Little did they know.

0:20:09 > 0:20:10But they do now.

0:20:10 > 0:20:14News reports say the pizza company has fired the delivery man

0:20:14 > 0:20:18and introduced sealed boxes to stop any more pizza pilfering.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31In South Wales, we've seen how Detective Sergeant Daniel Michel

0:20:31 > 0:20:36is hunting for a gang of robbers who are targeting local shops.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40They would turn up at a local village shop in a large group.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42They would all go into the shop, not all at the same time,

0:20:42 > 0:20:46but once they enter, straight away they would engage the shopkeeper

0:20:46 > 0:20:47behind the counter.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49They were just buying everything.

0:20:49 > 0:20:56Chocolate, wine, magazines, all the spicy things and everything.

0:20:56 > 0:21:01The shopkeeper's attention was distracted from the door to the flat.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05The group even uses a baby to help distract the shopkeeper.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07"Aww, look at the cute baby. It's lovely.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10"How old is the baby?" Meantime...

0:21:10 > 0:21:13One member of the gang then would slip to the shopkeeper's flat and

0:21:13 > 0:21:18would go through there looking for the items of highest value to steal.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22Then, as soon as that person comes back down to the shop,

0:21:22 > 0:21:23the gang leaves.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30Luckily, most of the shops have CCTV cameras in operation.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36There was a significant amount of CCTV to go through,

0:21:36 > 0:21:40so a small team was brought together to investigate these crimes only.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43And then one particularly interesting piece of footage

0:21:43 > 0:21:45comes in from a shop in Pontypridd.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48It shows the gang's real target is the shopkeeper's flat.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51This footage here was crucial to us.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56The placement of the CCTV cameras both outside the shop

0:21:56 > 0:22:00and inside enabled us to see exactly what happened.

0:22:02 > 0:22:07The gang arrive in dribs and drabs. First, two women enter the store.

0:22:07 > 0:22:1030 seconds later, three men.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13One of them has a very distinctive hairstyle.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16We've seen that before in the other lady's shop.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Next, two more women arrive.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21The men distract the shopkeeper

0:22:21 > 0:22:24while the women mill about at the back of the shop.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28One of them makes sure the coast is clear.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Her accomplice moves a card stand aside

0:22:30 > 0:22:33and then quickly ducks through a doorway to the flat upstairs.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43A moment later, the owner's young daughter notices that the card stand

0:22:43 > 0:22:46is out of place and she goes to move it back.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50The little girl now is being coaxed towards the front of the shop

0:22:50 > 0:22:52by some of the gang members.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54She put the card stand back, so they're asking her,

0:22:54 > 0:22:55"Can you come to the front with us?"

0:22:55 > 0:22:59What appears to be just an innocent conversation between this gang member

0:22:59 > 0:23:02and the young girl is actually a very meticulous

0:23:02 > 0:23:05and organised conversation

0:23:05 > 0:23:09intending to keep her distracted and away from the back of the shop.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12Ten minutes after sneaking into the family's flat,

0:23:12 > 0:23:13the thief comes back out.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16Here now we see the gang member who's been in the flat

0:23:16 > 0:23:18and has stolen the jewellery and the cash,

0:23:18 > 0:23:20she comes out from the flat door,

0:23:20 > 0:23:23sneaks around behind the card stand.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25She gets herself ready

0:23:25 > 0:23:28and then she immediately leaves the shop

0:23:28 > 0:23:31accompanied by a couple of other gang members,

0:23:31 > 0:23:33and here now we just see the last of the gang members

0:23:33 > 0:23:36just politely thanking the shopkeepers for their help

0:23:36 > 0:23:39and saying goodbye, and then they leave the shop.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42Daniel's team meticulously compares evidence

0:23:42 > 0:23:44from a number of different shops.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47We could see who we believed were members of the gang

0:23:47 > 0:23:49and what they were doing.

0:23:49 > 0:23:50But we didn't know who they were.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54Also as a result from the CCTV outside the shops,

0:23:54 > 0:23:58we could see vehicles which we believe the gang were using.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00The vehicles are traced to an area near Birmingham

0:24:00 > 0:24:02and ten people are arrested.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05They were brought back down to the South Wales area.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08Our investigation kicked on then,

0:24:08 > 0:24:10and by actually having those people under arrest

0:24:10 > 0:24:13we could see what they looked like and pick them out from the CCTV

0:24:13 > 0:24:15in the number of shops where they played their role.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20Eight members of the gang are found guilty

0:24:20 > 0:24:22of conspiracy to commit burglary

0:24:22 > 0:24:26and sentenced to a total of 24 years between them.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30During their five-month shopping spree

0:24:30 > 0:24:33they managed to steal £41,000 in cash

0:24:33 > 0:24:37and £128,000 worth of jewellery.

0:24:37 > 0:24:41The gang hit victims also in the Somerset

0:24:41 > 0:24:45and Midlands areas, but as far north as well as Cheshire,

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Yorkshire and Manchester.

0:24:48 > 0:24:52The convictions are a relief for many shopkeepers around the country.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55The police phoned and said, "We got them."

0:24:55 > 0:24:58So I was like, "Wow, that's good." We are really happy that...

0:24:58 > 0:25:01I hope they're not going to go on doing to other people like us,

0:25:01 > 0:25:05you know. We are working hard to, you know, make our living

0:25:05 > 0:25:08and then somebody just comes overnight and robbed the whole thing

0:25:08 > 0:25:12one day. So that's not nice, is it?

0:25:12 > 0:25:15Daniel's also delighted that the work of his team has put such

0:25:15 > 0:25:18a large gang behind bars.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20I think that's a very good result.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Firstly it's a good result for our victims.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25They see that the people who've stolen from them are punished

0:25:25 > 0:25:28by the law. Also I feel it's a very good result

0:25:28 > 0:25:30in that the message it sends out to anybody else considering

0:25:30 > 0:25:33this type of crime, it'll prevent them from doing it

0:25:33 > 0:25:35cos they'll have something to think about.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45The police really value CCTV footage

0:25:45 > 0:25:47which shows offences being committed.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50All we would ask, is make sure that the quality of the picture

0:25:50 > 0:25:53it captures is really good.

0:25:53 > 0:25:54The better quality the evidence,

0:25:54 > 0:25:57the more likely we are to identify the suspect.

0:26:02 > 0:26:06While we've seen how some criminals operate in highly-organised gangs,

0:26:06 > 0:26:09others set off to steal with next to no preparation

0:26:09 > 0:26:11and precious little intelligence.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14This is a large city centre jewellery store.

0:26:14 > 0:26:20All is quiet inside. The CCTV camera outside shows a man approaching.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24He heads to the shop security door and waits to be buzzed in.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Once the door is open, he strolls towards a counter

0:26:26 > 0:26:28and asks for assistance.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32He says he's after an engagement ring, and the assistant

0:26:32 > 0:26:35takes him over to have a look at the selection of sparklers.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40He appears to take a particular fancy to a white gold ring

0:26:40 > 0:26:43worth £2,000. Hmm, very bling.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48He decides he simply has to have it,

0:26:48 > 0:26:51but he's not planning on paying for it.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56But this dim-witted thief has forgotten an important detail.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00Because he was buzzed into the shop, he also needs to be buzzed out.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02He's trapped.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06But this rough diamond isn't the sort to give himself up.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08He has a cunning plan.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12He raises his hand, puts the ring in his mouth and swallows.

0:27:14 > 0:27:18Unbelievably, under the watchful eye of 16 surveillance cameras,

0:27:18 > 0:27:21he's now denying all knowledge of the ring.

0:27:23 > 0:27:27The police arrive, but this thief clearly thinks he's a cut above

0:27:27 > 0:27:29the rest and doesn't even seem bothered.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33All the while he's still digesting his impromptu

0:27:33 > 0:27:36breakfast at Tiffany's.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38The police check his jacket for the missing ring,

0:27:38 > 0:27:40but of course it's nowhere to be found.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43Satisfied that the vital evidence is safely stashed somewhere

0:27:43 > 0:27:45where the sun doesn't shine,

0:27:45 > 0:27:49they leave and request a search warrant with a difference...

0:27:49 > 0:27:51for inside his stomach.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55Police order an X-ray and find exactly what they are after...

0:27:55 > 0:27:58the world's most expensive gastric band.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02After waiting a while for nature to take its course,

0:28:02 > 0:28:07the ring finally...reappears and is returned to the jeweller's.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10This dopey diamond smuggler has been charged with theft

0:28:10 > 0:28:12and falsifying physical evidence.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19Now, there's a story that's hard to swallow.

0:28:19 > 0:28:21Join us next time when more crooks

0:28:21 > 0:28:23and con artists get caught red-handed.
