0:00:02 > 0:00:05Thieves will steal our cars, our valuables,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08just about anything they can get their hands on.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12To cut down on crime and antisocial behaviour,

0:00:12 > 0:00:15the police and other agencies are using new tactics

0:00:15 > 0:00:19and technology, where the bad guys actually get caught in the act.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Brilliant footage. Police officers love CCTV.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26Local councils, shops and businesses are laying some traps of their own.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29As soon as he walked into the picture I knew who he was.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30And the general public, too,

0:00:30 > 0:00:33can help unsuspecting crooks get their comeuppance.

0:00:33 > 0:00:34We definitely needed proof.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37You're not going to get away with it, you might as well pack up.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40It made me swallow with pride, it was brilliant.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43So anyone who's up to no good had better think twice.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45They might just get caught red-handed.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54Today, a jewellery snatch.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57The raider's fast, but the shop staff are faster.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59It's so much quicker than I remember.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02- I'm like a ninja! - SHE LAUGHS

0:01:02 > 0:01:06Quick thinking and quick footed, they run rings around the raider.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10Also today, their mum's money is being stolen,

0:01:10 > 0:01:14so the family fakes some banknotes to set a cunning trap.

0:01:14 > 0:01:18We photocopied a couple of £20 notes.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19We had put there the bait

0:01:19 > 0:01:22and we was waiting to see what would be taken.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27And not so much smash and grab as grab and smash.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29It's a demolition derby

0:01:29 > 0:01:32when a dodgy driver makes off with a precious motor.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48These are the views from CCTV cameras in and around

0:01:48 > 0:01:52a jewellery shop in the historic city of Winchester.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56All they usually capture is the sight of customers browsing

0:01:56 > 0:01:58and buying what's on offer,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01but these cameras have a bit of history themselves.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05Over the last few years...they've caught a few criminals, too.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11An armed gang targeted this shop two years running.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14We previously featured it on this programme.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17When three men run into your store wearing dark clothing,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19gloves and balaclavas, it's pretty frightening.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21When they pull up a gun, it's terrifying.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23The first time, the robbers were successful.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27They actually got away with a quarter of a million pounds' worth of jewellery.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30But the second time, the jewellers were ready for them

0:02:30 > 0:02:32with some new security equipment.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Everything we had planned worked perfectly.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Some of the gang ended up in prison.

0:02:38 > 0:02:43Then, just recently, a man walks up to the shop and goes inside.

0:02:43 > 0:02:48Now, he clearly hasn't watched our previous programmes, naughty boy.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52If he had, he probably wouldn't attempt what he's about to do here.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55These staff are skilled at making and selling jewellery,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59but they've also become highly experienced in the art of catching crooks.

0:03:04 > 0:03:09Jeremy France first opened his doors in Winchester 25 years ago.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13As the turnover grew, so did the chance of being turned over.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17Any jeweller is a target, and the larger the volume or amount

0:03:17 > 0:03:20of jewellery you carry, then the more likely you are to be a target.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24And the criminals have a lot of time on their hands to watch you

0:03:24 > 0:03:28and to decide how to rob you. We have to stay one step ahead and we do.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31We do it through our own trade, our insurers

0:03:31 > 0:03:33and through our own perseverance and watching.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Jeremy invested in a fog cloaking system, which prevents

0:03:38 > 0:03:42robbers from seeing the jewellery and drives them out of the shop.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44He also installed a sprayer,

0:03:44 > 0:03:48which marks thieves with special encoded liquid.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Once it's on, it doesn't come off again.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53It is always in the path of the exit.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56That gives us time to hit the button so they run under it,

0:03:56 > 0:03:59it activates, and you cannot get past it.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02And because of the liquid's unique code,

0:04:02 > 0:04:05it directly links the criminal to the jewellery shop.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08In the police station, every criminal is tested for the DNA liquid.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12If you have it on you, you were there. It's 100% conviction rate.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18But it seems some thieves still reckon it's worth the risks...

0:04:18 > 0:04:21if they get in and out quick enough.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Well, let's just see if they're right.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29It's mid-afternoon on a weekday.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33While there's a quiet moment with no customers, Larissa,

0:04:33 > 0:04:37one of the sales staff, is playing a game with Buster, Jeremy's puppy.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Not exactly a guard dog.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44Larissa works in the jewellers on a temporary basis.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46She spends most of her time on the high seas.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49I have been in the Merchant Navy since I was 19,

0:04:49 > 0:04:52but always worked in other fields such as jewellers

0:04:52 > 0:04:57and shoe shops in between ships, so you would think that my danger

0:04:57 > 0:04:59and excitement comes from being in the Merchant Navy.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02However, it seems to be that it's more at the jewellers.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07A little while later, a man walks into the shop.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09The gentleman came in,

0:05:09 > 0:05:12I obviously got up from playing with the puppy and approached him.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15And he was... Nothing suspicious.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17He was quite quiet, quite calm.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21The man asks to look at two gold bracelets from the window display.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Just had the two straight out and was asking him

0:05:24 > 0:05:26what he was looking for and for a reason -

0:05:26 > 0:05:29was it for a birthday or present or anything?

0:05:29 > 0:05:32And he said it was for his sister's birthday.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34And he said he was worried about the size of her wrists

0:05:34 > 0:05:38and that she had quite large wrists, which I thought was quite weird,

0:05:38 > 0:05:40cos he was quite a smaller framed gentleman.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Other staff walk into the sales area.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45The man picks one of the bracelet up

0:05:45 > 0:05:48to check the size against his own wrist.

0:05:48 > 0:05:54- Larissa senses a slight change in his behaviour.- He was kind of...

0:05:54 > 0:05:58It wasn't quite agitated cos it wasn't that bold,

0:05:58 > 0:06:00cos I think I would have noticed it more,

0:06:00 > 0:06:03but he was a little bit kind of skittish.

0:06:03 > 0:06:08He made his excuses and had to go and make a phone call, so he stepped

0:06:08 > 0:06:11outside the shop and I just said that I'd keep the bracelets aside for him.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14The man leaves and wanders out of camera view.

0:06:16 > 0:06:21Almost 20 minutes later he returns and is greeted by Buster.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24Larissa is dealing with another customer.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26By now, Jeremy has arrived at work

0:06:26 > 0:06:28and is holding a meeting in the back office.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Although I'm at the back doing business,

0:06:30 > 0:06:32I am actually watching at the same time.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36Jeremy's daughter Harriet comes through to see if she can help the man,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39but he insists on waiting for Larissa.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42I knew what bracelets he wanted to see and the reasons why,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44so he had kind of established a story, so to speak.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47This man was quite clever. He actually built up a rapport,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50he came back several times, he asked questions.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52He put us to ease, if you like.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55But Larissa is still dealing with her customer.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58The man steps outside again for another phone call.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Someone will pop outside to make a phone call,

0:07:01 > 0:07:04but to do it two times in such a short space, it was quite unusual.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Another couple of minutes go by.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Then he comes in again and waits for Larissa.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13Finally, Larissa is free to serve the man again.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15I got... Placed the bracelets out in front of him again,

0:07:15 > 0:07:18and it was at this point he was quite quiet

0:07:18 > 0:07:20and quite hesitant with conversation.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23I imagine there's a wee drop of adrenaline running around.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26And then I could tell that something was going to happen

0:07:26 > 0:07:28because of the way he was picking up the bracelets.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31He picked up the two together and it was kind of fumbled.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33I did make good eye contact with him,

0:07:33 > 0:07:36but he was trying hard to look down at the bracelets.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38At that moment, it did feel like it was a lifetime,

0:07:38 > 0:07:40although it was only half a second.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42I could see that he was going to do it.

0:07:45 > 0:07:46And he does.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48He sprints for the front door,

0:07:48 > 0:07:51but can he make it through before Larissa locks it?

0:07:51 > 0:07:54She reaches for the button with razor-sharp reflexes.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57He's still got a few feet to go.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59She presses the button. He's trapped.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04My initial reaction was to lock that door.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06We've done a lot of training to...

0:08:06 > 0:08:09The first thing you do is to lock that door,

0:08:09 > 0:08:11and knowing where the lock was was key,

0:08:11 > 0:08:14and luckily it was right by my side.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18This is Larissa's reaction run at normal speed.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24Bam! The door's locked. That was fast!

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Buster, the puppy, runs for cover

0:08:26 > 0:08:30as the man starts to shout threats and pulls on the door in a frenzy.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Not always a good idea to lock a door with criminals,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34especially if they have guns,

0:08:34 > 0:08:35but when it's a snatch it's not a bad idea.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39It gives you thinking space, and, well, Larissa was thinking.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41I shouted for Jeremy, to get his attention,

0:08:41 > 0:08:44and went to hit the panic button.

0:08:44 > 0:08:49The reason was to make sure that the traceable liquid was activated.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51The man is soaked in the encoded liquid,

0:08:51 > 0:08:54permanent proof that he has been at the scene of the crime.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Now Jeremy has to decide what to do next.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00He was extremely violent, he was kicking and smashing the door,

0:09:00 > 0:09:05swearing at us, threatening us with violence if we didn't open the door.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08I had to make a decision whether we waited for the police to arrive and

0:09:08 > 0:09:11make an easier arrest, or let him go and therefore not endanger my staff.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14The decision was very simple, we let him go.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Which I did, and then put my hands up to show to him that I'd

0:09:17 > 0:09:20unlocked the door and wasn't right to do anything else afterwards.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26Later, the jewellery thief legs it, but Jeremy is in hot pursuit.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30It was about here that he just literally stopped

0:09:30 > 0:09:34and turned around, and of course my heart jumped into my throat.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Now, maybe it's time to call Ghostbusters,

0:09:42 > 0:09:46as this lost soul sets out to steal some spirits.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49But these spirits are a little bit more worldly,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52and this is a story that's probably going to come back

0:09:52 > 0:09:53and haunt him for some time.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03It's after midnight and what's this moving silently through

0:10:03 > 0:10:07the aisles of this off-licence? Is it a ghostly apparition?

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Well, maybe. But my money is on it being a burglar

0:10:10 > 0:10:14hiding under a bedsheet with eyeholes cut out so he can see.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18And this troubled soul isn't here to haunt anyone.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21He just wants to spirit away some of the alcohol.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25And with that in mind, heads for the stock room.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28He seems to know what he wants, but as he bends to pick it up,

0:10:28 > 0:10:33the flimsy costume falls forward and the eyeholes move out of position.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Realising he hasn't got a ghost of a chance

0:10:36 > 0:10:40of carrying things out in this state, he bottles it.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42His identity remains shrouded in mystery...

0:10:43 > 0:10:47..but hopefully the Ghostbusters will catch up with him soon.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Now to a serious betrayal of trust.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56They call it financial abuse, when someone takes advantage

0:10:56 > 0:10:59of their position to steal from the vulnerable.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08This bedroom belongs to Mavis and Stan,

0:11:08 > 0:11:10an elderly couple from Plymouth, Devon.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Money has been going missing from the room, so their family

0:11:13 > 0:11:18have set a trap for the thief, using a hidden camera and fake banknotes.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21That's Mavis's carer and friend.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24She's come upstairs on her own to collect a fresh towel.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27There's no need for her to venture further into the room...

0:11:28 > 0:11:30..and yet she does.

0:11:30 > 0:11:35It was sickening in that the real sad thing was it was sad for Mother.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38The fake money flushes out a false friend.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46Sadly, since these events, Mavis has passed away,

0:11:46 > 0:11:49but her family want the full story to be told.

0:11:58 > 0:11:59Mavis, a former nurse,

0:11:59 > 0:12:03did a fair bit of caring herself in her lifetime.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07She leaves behind a large family, including seven children.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Son Gary is the youngest of the boys.

0:12:09 > 0:12:15Four boys, three girls, and we have two stepbrothers and a stepsister.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17It's a lot to keep happy.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21Even so, Mavis managed to do so, together with Stan,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24her second husband, who she was with for 40 years.

0:12:24 > 0:12:25The perfect wife.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30She's do anybody a favour. She was that type of person.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33She was one in one million. She really was.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37In her late 70s, Mavis's health goes downhill.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39The family rally round.

0:12:39 > 0:12:40But, as time goes by,

0:12:40 > 0:12:44they realise Mavis needs more help than they can differ.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47We decided, you know, with mother saying, yes, it would be OK,

0:12:47 > 0:12:50to get a care worker in to start helping out.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Various care workers come in, but there's one who Mavis

0:12:53 > 0:12:56forms a particular attachment to.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00She was seen to be a perfect person.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04More than anything, my mother used to like to have a chin-wag, a chat.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06Mavis soon asks if her new friend

0:13:06 > 0:13:09can take over more of the care worker shifts.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12As she got more friendly, Mum let her go upstairs

0:13:12 > 0:13:14and she would pick up the towels and all that.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18Then, one day, Gary hears some alarming news.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21I had a phone call from one of my sisters to say

0:13:21 > 0:13:24that they thought that £1,000 has gone missing,

0:13:24 > 0:13:27but they couldn't be sure because obviously it was mother's money

0:13:27 > 0:13:28and it was just all in a drawer.

0:13:28 > 0:13:33Mavis has £300 collected from the bank for her each week.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36She's from a generation that likes to have cash in the house,

0:13:36 > 0:13:40but she rarely gets through it all, so she puts the rest in an envelope.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43When it reaches £1,000, her daughters seal the envelope

0:13:43 > 0:13:46and put it away in a bedroom drawer.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50They think she has managed to save up several thousand pounds.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52From then, really, we kept a closer eye on it

0:13:52 > 0:13:57and, within a week, another £2,000 had gone missing.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01But who is taking the envelopes?

0:14:01 > 0:14:03We are a close, honest family with each other.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07We knew that it had to be an outsider.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11Only one carer, Jennifer, ever goes upstairs.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13She's supposed to come to here, open the Ottoman -

0:14:13 > 0:14:18as you can see, towels - take a towel and go down.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21The family believe she hasn't been stopping there.

0:14:21 > 0:14:26Then she's come here, she's had to go through all these drawers, which is

0:14:26 > 0:14:30six of them, to find that, finally, in this drawer here,

0:14:30 > 0:14:32this is where the money was.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34Suspicion isn't, however, proof.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36To convince the police,

0:14:36 > 0:14:40and Mavis herself, they need to catch the carer in the act.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Luckily, Gary has a friend in the surveillance business who

0:14:43 > 0:14:45offers to set up a hidden camera.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48The camera was set up in a corner above the door.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50It just looked like a burglar alarm.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52You wouldn't suspect nothing.

0:14:52 > 0:14:57Next, they need to set a trap, but don't want Mavis to lose any

0:14:57 > 0:15:01more money, so they decide to try their hands at counterfeiting.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05We photocopied a couple of £20 notes

0:15:05 > 0:15:08and put all white paper in between,

0:15:08 > 0:15:09put the envelopes back in

0:15:09 > 0:15:13and sealed them and we was waiting to see what would be taken.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16And it doesn't take long for the bait to be taken.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23First morning, she walks into the bedroom,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26past the box of towels and goes straight to the top drawer.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32She has a quick rummage, possibly to see what's there,

0:15:32 > 0:15:33then heads back downstairs.

0:15:36 > 0:15:40Two days later, she goes past the towels again,

0:15:40 > 0:15:43checks the money drawer for a few seconds

0:15:43 > 0:15:45before leaving empty-handed.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49Perhaps she's lost her nerve.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53Oh, no. Maybe Friday's a better day for thieving.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55After collecting a clean towel,

0:15:55 > 0:15:59this calculating woman can't resist the lure of the cash any longer

0:15:59 > 0:16:01and takes an envelope from the drawer.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06Little does she know it's full of photocopies and plain paper.

0:16:07 > 0:16:13It's not easy to see but that little dark shape there is the envelope.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16She tucks it into her trousers as she leaves the room.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19The family watch the images they caught on camera.

0:16:19 > 0:16:25It was sickening in that the real sad thing was it was sad for Mother.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28Cried. Constantly cried. You know, "How could she?

0:16:28 > 0:16:32"For all what I've done for her." She couldn't believe that she

0:16:32 > 0:16:37could do such a thing to her cos she trusted her so much.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40We had a job to do and our next job was to phone the police to

0:16:40 > 0:16:43get them around to obviously press charges.

0:16:43 > 0:16:47But this so-called friend already knows she's been found out.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50Once she left this house, she realised that she was caught

0:16:50 > 0:16:54cos once she opened the envelope she realised it was paper.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57She immediately resigns from her position at the care company and

0:16:57 > 0:17:02when the police arrive she hands over an envelope containing £1,000.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04The one containing the fake paper notes,

0:17:04 > 0:17:06she had already thrown in the bin.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12In court, she is found guilty of theft and attempted theft

0:17:12 > 0:17:17and is sentenced to 40 weeks in prison, suspended for two years.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21The judge also ordered that she pays a large sum

0:17:21 > 0:17:23in compensation to the family.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26The hidden camera has done its job well.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28If you don't catch them in the act, there will be no charges.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31We were told that by the police - if you never had the CCTV,

0:17:31 > 0:17:33you wouldn't have had a conviction.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38Mavis didn't live to see her carer brought to trial.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41After suffering a fall at home, she went into hospital

0:17:41 > 0:17:43and passed away two weeks later.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45We had a good sendoff for her.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48The family were very close, all stood together.

0:17:48 > 0:17:49It's a big loss to me.

0:17:51 > 0:17:52Yes.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55Although this business was a strain and stress for her,

0:17:55 > 0:17:59the family are determined not to let it taint the happy memories

0:17:59 > 0:18:01of Mavis's last years.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03We all love our mother and we'll never forget her.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07She was such a beautiful woman, my wife, no two ways about that.

0:18:14 > 0:18:15If, like Mavis's family,

0:18:15 > 0:18:20we suspect someone we trust his stealing from us, what should we do?

0:18:20 > 0:18:22If it's money that being stolen,

0:18:22 > 0:18:24think about marking the serial numbers.

0:18:24 > 0:18:28If, for any investigation, we were to arrest somebody, the first

0:18:28 > 0:18:33thing we would look is to try and identify that that £20 was your £20.

0:18:33 > 0:18:34In order to gather the evidence

0:18:34 > 0:18:37to actually prove that the thefts are taking place,

0:18:37 > 0:18:41there is an awful lot of very good technology and kit out there.

0:18:41 > 0:18:46Covert cameras can be hidden inside a pen, inside a flowerpot.

0:18:46 > 0:18:47DNA-encoded liquid.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50Once you've put this on to your property, if it's stolen

0:18:50 > 0:18:52then the police recover it,

0:18:52 > 0:18:56we can track it back and trace it to your household.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58Don't keep large amounts of money in the house.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01A bank will have much better security than you will.

0:19:01 > 0:19:02Call your local police.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Get some advice from them and then take it from there.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15Coming up, jeweller Jeremy is chasing a bracelet snatcher.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18I was screaming out, "Stop! He's a jewellery thief!"

0:19:18 > 0:19:20Can he bag this not-so-diamond geezer?

0:19:28 > 0:19:31But first, car crime.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35Some criminals don't like spending their own money on cars.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37They'd rather steal ours.

0:19:37 > 0:19:38This next car thief, though,

0:19:38 > 0:19:42hasn't counted on the owner using some top gear to track him down.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50This car isn't just any car.

0:19:50 > 0:19:55It's a limited edition rally Subaru and Simon's pride and joy.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59There's only about 30 left now on the road, so it's a very rare thing.

0:19:59 > 0:20:04But his rare classic motor almost becomes a thing of the past

0:20:04 > 0:20:06when a serial car thief jumps in to steal it.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Thankfully, his bungled getaway is far from classic.

0:20:19 > 0:20:23We are in a village just outside Otley, near Leeds.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27This family-run car dealership has been here since the 1950s.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Started about 60 years ago by my grandad.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34It's then been passed down to obviously my father,

0:20:34 > 0:20:36and then now it's myself and my sister

0:20:36 > 0:20:38that are mainly involved in the business.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40Simon runs the repair workshop...

0:20:40 > 0:20:42How's it going?

0:20:42 > 0:20:44..but cars aren't just his family's business,

0:20:44 > 0:20:47they're also his personal passion.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49Yeah, it's something that I love, really, so...

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Although that's quite sad.

0:20:51 > 0:20:56Simon goes rallying and his own car is a much sought-after Subaru.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00The car is a special edition for Colin McRae, the rally driver,

0:21:00 > 0:21:03but beyond that it does have a lot of sentimental value

0:21:03 > 0:21:08cos it was the first car I bought with my own money. It's the car

0:21:08 > 0:21:13that my fiancee learned to drive in and just so many memories, really.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17But one dark day, contact with his cherished motor is broken.

0:21:18 > 0:21:23It's near closing time and Simon's about to check his car's oil level.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26I just brought it in before I went home, so I just left it there

0:21:26 > 0:21:29while I walked into the showroom to grab some of my stuff.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33Before he knows it, there's the sound of a familiar engine revving,

0:21:33 > 0:21:35followed by a loud crash.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41It wasn't just a slight bang, it was a real smash and wallop.

0:21:42 > 0:21:46CCTV cameras capture the sight of Simon's car leaving the garage

0:21:46 > 0:21:50and the door looks badly damaged. Simon runs through to the workshop.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52It was just a state of destruction, really.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55There was oil everywhere, glass all on the floor.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57He races outside.

0:21:57 > 0:22:01We just saw him driving off down the road as we got to the forecourt.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05I thought I'd never see it again and I'd never own another one

0:22:05 > 0:22:07cos really it is almost irreplaceable now.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11Simon and his colleagues rally round.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14They call the police and check their CCTV footage

0:22:14 > 0:22:16to piece together what's happened.

0:22:17 > 0:22:21They see a man walking onto the forecourt.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25He got dropped off just on the main road there by another car,

0:22:25 > 0:22:27which then drove off and left him.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30Obviously, he's looking inside the cars here, trying to see

0:22:30 > 0:22:33if there's any keys in the ignition, but they were all locked.

0:22:33 > 0:22:35The man enters the service area.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38Obviously there was no-one in the workshop, which is quite unusual.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41The way out is narrow and lined with gear,

0:22:41 > 0:22:43so there's not much room for manoeuvre.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Reverses it flat-out down the workshop and he's got the door

0:22:46 > 0:22:50open and he catches the door on the oil drum, which knocks the drum over.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54He then starts reversing again

0:22:54 > 0:22:58and then the door gets caught on the wall there, at which point the glass

0:22:58 > 0:23:04smashes, he's cut his arm open on the door, there's blood everywhere.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08As well as hurting himself, the thief's damaged the car.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10It was difficult seeing it, obviously, with all the damage

0:23:10 > 0:23:12and everything. It's quite upsetting.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16But Simon's beloved car is protected by some smart technology.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19The car actually has a tracker system fitted

0:23:19 > 0:23:23so we phoned the tracker company, told them what had happened

0:23:23 > 0:23:26and they immediately activated the system.

0:23:26 > 0:23:31It means the police can find out its whereabouts...and they do.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34The thief left the car abandoned at a train station,

0:23:34 > 0:23:38but with it he left behind some important evidence.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40There was blood over the door,

0:23:40 > 0:23:43so obviously the police could then use his DNA.

0:23:43 > 0:23:48The police collect the CCTV footage and hold the car for forensic tests.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51Then, finally, Simon gets his dream wheels back.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54Obviously, it was a massive relief to me.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57I was overjoyed they'd found it complete.

0:23:59 > 0:24:04The DNA test results reveal the thief is 29-year-old Duane Kale.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08He is arrested and admits to stealing Simon's car and two others.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12In court, he's sentenced to three years in prison.

0:24:13 > 0:24:17The Subaru is repaired and is now back to its pristine condition.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22I'm really grateful to the police for their work in getting the car back.

0:24:22 > 0:24:27Obviously it's a really nice feeling that I've got back again and,

0:24:27 > 0:24:29yeah, still using it everyday.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33And, yeah, just feel very grateful that I can still drive it, really.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47We're in a Winchester jewellery shop.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50A thief has snatched two gold bracelets.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53Quick-thinking sales assistant Larissa has locked

0:24:53 > 0:24:58the door in a flash and made sure he was doused in traceable liquid.

0:24:58 > 0:25:02He was quite aggressive, which was quite scary, but I knew,

0:25:02 > 0:25:04looking at Jeremy, waiting for his instruction,

0:25:04 > 0:25:07I knew he wouldn't put me in any harm's way.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11The shop owner, Jeremy, has given the order to let the thief out

0:25:11 > 0:25:13and then decides to chase after him.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15My decision was to track him.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17He was covered in a DNA-coded liquid.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20He was going to get convicted of the crime,

0:25:20 > 0:25:23but only if we knew who he was and we could find him.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27He asks for a phone so he can update police on the thief's whereabouts.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30My staff are very quick and I had a phone in my hand in a second.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33Then he heads out after the thief.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35There was a lot of people on the other side of the road

0:25:35 > 0:25:38and I was screaming out, "Stop! He's a jewellery thief!"

0:25:38 > 0:25:41And, of course, you're kind of hoping

0:25:41 > 0:25:43that somebody will do something but they just didn't.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Even though there's some shouting,

0:25:45 > 0:25:48the thief doesn't realise he's being followed.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51Jeremy keeps his distance and phones the police.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54At the danger 50-something and running with a phone in your hand,

0:25:54 > 0:25:56there was a lot of panting going on.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59They realised that I was giving chase and they were taking my information,

0:25:59 > 0:26:03they were passing it on to the squad cars that were in the area.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05While Jeremy continues to track the thief,

0:26:05 > 0:26:08another police unit arrives at the shop.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10Larissa goes in search of Buster,

0:26:10 > 0:26:13the puppy who had a scary time during the theft.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16We actually found him under the chair, cowering and shaking,

0:26:16 > 0:26:18so I spent the time kind of looking after him

0:26:18 > 0:26:21and not really thinking about my own fear.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23It wasn't till afterwards, I was being interviewed,

0:26:23 > 0:26:25that I did think, "That was quite a scary situation

0:26:25 > 0:26:27"and it could have got a lot worse,"

0:26:27 > 0:26:30which is when you start thinking about the what-ifs.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32I think that's when you start getting a bit scared of what

0:26:32 > 0:26:34could have happened.

0:26:34 > 0:26:38Meanwhile, Jeremy follows the thief into some backstreets.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40Then the man turns left into an alleyway.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43I stopped. A few moments later, he came back,

0:26:43 > 0:26:45fully changed into completely different clothing.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48The thief now realises Jeremy is on his tail

0:26:48 > 0:26:50and starts to look threatening.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53But Jeremy has set out to track the man for the police,

0:26:53 > 0:26:55not fight with him.

0:26:55 > 0:26:56And I made the right decision.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00I stepped back and I literally waved him through.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02Strangely, he allowed me to follow him

0:27:02 > 0:27:04and he knew I was following him at this point.

0:27:04 > 0:27:08The man eventually climbs a high, spiked fence and escapes...

0:27:08 > 0:27:09but not for long.

0:27:09 > 0:27:13Because when the police arrived, Jeremy shows them the alleyway

0:27:13 > 0:27:17where the man got changed and they find his discarded clothes.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19Very fortunately, when they did a DNA test

0:27:19 > 0:27:23on the sweat around the hat, they found this man was on record.

0:27:23 > 0:27:27Three days later, they broke down his door and made the arrest.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31The man admits to stealing the two gold bracelets straightaway.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Pointless to deny it when covered in coded liquid.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41In court, he is sentenced to four months in prison,

0:27:41 > 0:27:43suspended for 18.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45He is also given a supervision order

0:27:45 > 0:27:48and has to undergo drug rehabilitation treatment.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55Before he was sentenced, the man told police which pawnbrokers

0:27:55 > 0:27:57he had sold the stolen jewellery to.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00It was recovered by the police and returned to us,

0:28:00 > 0:28:03and that's a first in my 25 years in this business.

0:28:06 > 0:28:09Larissa, whose quick reactions led to the thief being caught,

0:28:09 > 0:28:12gets to see the video footage again.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15Oh, my God, it was so much quicker than I remember.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17That's so weird.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19It's crazy fast. I'm like a ninja.

0:28:28 > 0:28:29That's it for today.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32Join us next time, when police and the public

0:28:32 > 0:28:35will be catching more criminals red-handed.
