0:00:34 > 0:00:37You won't get away with it. You might as well pack up.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21A tricky situation at Tricky's bar.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25And, it's not "Bridezilla", this is a bloke.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28He's caught on camera nicking wedding dresses,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30but is about to have his big day ruined.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Ashford in Kent.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45We're watching a CCTV camera footage

0:01:45 > 0:01:48from inside a 24-hour convenience store.

0:01:49 > 0:01:54It's nearly 5am and Michael is manning the shop on his own.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57As a 60-year-old grandfather, he likes the night shifts

0:01:57 > 0:01:59because they are usually quiet.

0:01:59 > 0:02:04But this night is about to become one he'll never, ever forget.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07A young woman in a hoodie enters the shop.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Then, suddenly, she turns on Michael demanding money from the till

0:02:11 > 0:02:14and she's armed with a carving knife.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20But if she expects to frighten Michael, she's very much mistaken.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23I went to her, "I'm not going to give you anything.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26"You won't get away with it. You might as well stop now and pack up".

0:02:26 > 0:02:27A vicious struggle starts

0:02:27 > 0:02:30and it's the beginning of a bizarre series of events which will

0:02:30 > 0:02:34see Michael locked in with a violent and unpredictable woman

0:02:34 > 0:02:38who swings between attacking him and tending to his wounds.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40One minute she's standing there trying to kill me

0:02:40 > 0:02:43and the next minute she is trying to mop up the blood.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Michael is locked in the shop with a Jekyll and Hyde attacker.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49I can tell just from seeing Michael, he's been subject to

0:02:49 > 0:02:51something very horrific.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02This local store and petrol station is on one of the main roads

0:03:02 > 0:03:05that runs through Ashford.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Michael has worked here for the last six years

0:03:07 > 0:03:13and with an ever-expanding family, he has no intention of slowing down.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16I'm 60 years of age and my youngest son has just informed me

0:03:16 > 0:03:20that my tenth grandchild is on the way,

0:03:20 > 0:03:23which I wasn't very pleased about.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25Especially with Christmas and everything else,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27it does become expensive.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30But, er... No, I love kids.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32The shop is open 24 hours a day

0:03:32 > 0:03:35and Michael often works the night shift on his own.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Apart from having to deal with the odd shoplifter,

0:03:38 > 0:03:40he's never had any serious trouble.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43I wouldn't say that I would be apprehensive or worried about

0:03:43 > 0:03:47the next person who walks through the shop being an armed robber.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50No, I don't even think about that.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54Generally speaking, Ashford is a pretty safe place to be.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57Like every town, it gets its excitement from time to time,

0:03:57 > 0:04:03but we don't often have as serious a crime as an armed robbery.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07As were about to see, that's exactly what happens in Michael's shop.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12He's nearing the end of his shift at 5am

0:04:12 > 0:04:15and is waiting for the morning's milk delivery when the woman enters.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18My first impression was that she was just another customer.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21She was wearing stuff you would expect because the weather

0:04:21 > 0:04:24was still pretty cold - a scarf around her neck, hoodie.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26But she is not just another customer.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30She asked me to give her it. And I said, "Give you what?"

0:04:30 > 0:04:32And she went, "Give me the money".

0:04:32 > 0:04:33And to back up her demand,

0:04:33 > 0:04:37from her pocket she pulled out a nine-inch carving knife.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39I realised that she was being serious.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Although shaken, Michael keeps a cool head and, at first,

0:04:42 > 0:04:44tries to reason with the woman.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47"Don't be silly, love", I said. "You're on CCTV camera.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50"I'm not going to give you anything. You won't get away with it.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52"You might as well stop now and pack up".

0:04:52 > 0:04:55She ignores his advice and lunges at him with the knife blade,

0:04:55 > 0:05:00but she gets a surprise herself because Michael grabs her wrist.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02The company I work for, their attitude is,

0:05:02 > 0:05:06if someone draws a knife, you stand back, give them what they want.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09That's all well and good, but they're not drawing the knife

0:05:09 > 0:05:13on the company, they're actually drawing the knife on me.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16The woman starts to jab more wildly at him

0:05:16 > 0:05:19but Michael dodges the blade and stands firm.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21At one point, she actually manages to make contact,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24but it didn't actually pierce the skin.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27He presses a panic alarm which alerts police to the robbery

0:05:27 > 0:05:30and squad cars are dispatched by Ashford police.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33But the woman is getting more agitated.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36The high counter is stopping her from getting to Michael

0:05:36 > 0:05:40so she tries to smash through a security door to his left.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43I managed to get my foot against the door to stop her from coming in.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46She's actually doing the scene out of "Psycho"

0:05:46 > 0:05:50where she is stabbing the door with the knife because she can't get in.

0:05:50 > 0:05:51It's a terrifying moment,

0:05:51 > 0:05:56but Michael manages to block the door and dial 999.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59I left the phone ringing so that whoever picked the phone up

0:05:59 > 0:06:01could actually hear what was going on.

0:06:01 > 0:06:02At the other end,

0:06:02 > 0:06:05the emergency call-taker hears there's a knife involved

0:06:05 > 0:06:09and updates the police officers who are already rushing to the scene.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12When you are informed that there is potentially a knife involved,

0:06:12 > 0:06:13the adrenaline does kick in.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16But, suddenly, the woman seems to give up and heads for the exit

0:06:16 > 0:06:21and this is when Michael does something extraordinarily brave.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Seeing there are some people outside the door,

0:06:23 > 0:06:27he's afraid they'll be in danger and he presses a hidden button

0:06:27 > 0:06:28that locks the door.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30She was threatening them through the door.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34If I had let her go, she might... She could have gone and done anything.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37A courageous action to protect other people,

0:06:37 > 0:06:40but it means he's trapped inside with a violent attacker

0:06:40 > 0:06:43and now she really wants to get at Michael.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45She tries to climb the counter

0:06:45 > 0:06:48and this gives him a slim chance to disarm her.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51She put the knife in her hand on the counter to climb.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54I proceeded to grab her wrist with my left arm.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58As they frantically tussle, the woman grabs at Michael's neck

0:06:58 > 0:07:00then she violently yanks the blade free...

0:07:02 > 0:07:04..leaving a large cut on his hand.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09But what happens next is truly astonishing.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13After even more stabbing, suddenly she stops.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15When she realised she'd cut me,

0:07:15 > 0:07:17she had a change of heart.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21The woman even lays down her knife and goes off to get a can of drink.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Michael moves the knife away.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26There's quite a bit of blood on the floor and that, in itself,

0:07:26 > 0:07:29I think was enough to convince her that, you know, it might be bad.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33The woman fetches some kitchen roll to help Michael nurse the wound.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36One minute she's standing there trying to kill me,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39and the next minute she is trying to help me rather than hurt me.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42But, sadly, this show of concern is short-lived.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44The woman gets fired up again

0:07:44 > 0:07:46when she sees more people outside the door.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51She's realised there's no escape.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54But now, she picks up a glass bottle to use as a weapon.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56She was walking up and down the shop

0:07:56 > 0:07:59threatening the people outside with a broken bottle.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04Later, the police race to the shop after Michael's alert.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06I see that she had a weapon

0:08:06 > 0:08:08and from her demeanour she'd be ready to use it on us.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11They have riot equipment and pepper spray.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15The police somehow have to get in to disarm this violent woman

0:08:15 > 0:08:19without Michael or anyone else, including themselves, getting hurt.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28Now, this isn't a ghost, it's a chap in Swansea who hasn't

0:08:28 > 0:08:32a ghost of a chance of getting away with, er, a crime of fashion.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41This petty thief with a pile of wedding gowns has just kicked

0:08:41 > 0:08:45in the back door of a bridal shop and snatched a number of dresses.

0:08:47 > 0:08:51Maybe he has seven brothers who are marrying seven brides.

0:08:51 > 0:08:52Whatever the reason,

0:08:52 > 0:08:57I'm sure he'd like to draw a veil over this particular CCTV camera.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00These pictures helped police to track the man down

0:09:00 > 0:09:03and they raid his home the next day.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07They find the dresses stuffed unceremoniously

0:09:07 > 0:09:09into an under-stairs cupboard.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13They charge him with illegally attempting to have and to hold them.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16He is sentenced to nine and a half months in prison for this

0:09:16 > 0:09:18and one other offence.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23Hopefully, from now on, he'll learn to love, honour and obey the law.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Next, from weddings to funerals

0:09:29 > 0:09:34and the last place you'd expect to find crime would be a crematorium,

0:09:34 > 0:09:36which makes the actions of these heartless thieves

0:09:36 > 0:09:37even more shocking.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45Liverpool.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49Stealing from funerals has started to become a problem.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52You'd like to think security was something you could have

0:09:52 > 0:09:54quite low down on the agenda for cemeteries.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57And security is the last thing Chris thought he'd need

0:09:57 > 0:09:59at his mum's funeral.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02We went to put her in the hearse and then I noticed

0:10:02 > 0:10:07two people that were there had no connection with the family.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11And the mystery guests are not there to pay their respects.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Springwood Crematorium is part of Allerton Cemetery in Liverpool,

0:10:22 > 0:10:25one of the largest cemeteries in the UK.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Chris Jennat regularly visits his family's memorial.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35It's where his grandfather was buried, but also where

0:10:35 > 0:10:39he comes to remember his sister, his dad and, most recently, his mum.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43You only have one mum, don't you? So, she was great.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46She'd have done anything for you, you know?

0:10:46 > 0:10:51Mum Bridget was adored by her five children and many grandchildren.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54When she succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 83,

0:10:54 > 0:10:56the family were grief stricken.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59It was a shock for everyone because she was a character.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Some of the one-liners she used to come out with, you know?

0:11:02 > 0:11:05We were a very, very close family.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07The family arranged the funeral.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09Some very special blue and white flower arrangements

0:11:09 > 0:11:11are ordered in her memory.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14It's the last thing you've bought for your mum.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19So, whatever the expense was, it doesn't matter, does it, really?

0:11:19 > 0:11:22It's agreed that Bridget should be cremated

0:11:22 > 0:11:25at Springwood Crematorium that's run by Liverpool City Council.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29It's the busiest of our two crematoria in Liverpool.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32It's an area of peace and tranquillity

0:11:32 > 0:11:35and remembrance for many families.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39Dale Willis has helped run all the city's cemeteries for 14 years

0:11:39 > 0:11:42and that includes their protection.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44We do have a security presence in all the cemeteries.

0:11:44 > 0:11:49We have all the cemeteries locked at night and opened the next morning.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52But we do have pockets of antisocial behaviour.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55And Dale begins to notice a very upsetting trend.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58We had a couple of reports of flowers going missing

0:11:58 > 0:12:01and I am shocked that people would do something

0:12:01 > 0:12:03that would impact on a family in that way.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06After talking it over with local funeral directors,

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Dale decides to take action.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11There's only one way to resolve that...

0:12:11 > 0:12:13To install CCTV equipment.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20Two cameras are installed and signs are put up to make the public aware.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27A few weeks later, it's the day of Bridget's funeral.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29A couple of onlookers catch Chris's eye

0:12:29 > 0:12:32as the coffin starts the journey to the crematorium.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36We went to put her in the hearse and then I noticed, er, two people

0:12:36 > 0:12:40that were there had no connection with the family.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42I thought nothing about it.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Then the funeral got under way - a great service -

0:12:44 > 0:12:46then we came to Springwood Crematorium.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49The flowers were put in a place just outside the crem'.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Following the ceremony, the family return home.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55They plan to move the flowers to the memorial the next day.

0:12:55 > 0:13:00I got the phone call saying that the flowers had been pinched.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Chris is appalled by the news.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06It's absolutely disgusting, isn't it?

0:13:06 > 0:13:09To think someone could do such a low thing, like.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12It actually gives another dimension of stress

0:13:12 > 0:13:17and anxiety for the family at what is already a very difficult time.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21Staff at the crematorium check the CCTV recording

0:13:21 > 0:13:23and this is what they see.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30It's early evening on the same day as the funeral. A car pulls up.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Two women get out.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36One opens the boot while the other makes a beeline

0:13:36 > 0:13:38for the family's large blue and white flowers.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43It seems as if they knew the tributes to target.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48The crematorium hands the footage over to Merseyside Police

0:13:48 > 0:13:51who identify the women from their car registration.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53They are arrested.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57Chris gets to see the footage and thinks he's seen the women before.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00I realised they were on the corner of the street as we were

0:14:00 > 0:14:02bringing my mum out.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04During the women's arrests,

0:14:04 > 0:14:08the police discover flower arranging paraphernalia in one of their homes.

0:14:08 > 0:14:14It seems they were using Bridget's flowers to sell on as new tributes.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Words can't describe what they've done.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19But there's a full description of what they've done in court.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25The woman who picked up the flowers has previous convictions

0:14:25 > 0:14:27and is sentenced to ten weeks in prison.

0:14:29 > 0:14:34Her accomplice is given eight weeks, suspended for 12 months.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Both have to pay compensation.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43It was pleasing, certainly for the family, that justice had been done.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46We are in a position now where we're not having any thefts

0:14:46 > 0:14:50and I that can only be seen as a positive thing.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54My mam will be made up that they've been caught.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57Hopefully now she's looking down and saying, "Well done!"

0:15:04 > 0:15:08Coming up, a disappearing act at Tricky's bar when cash vanishes.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11We were all really gobsmacked.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14It's sleight of hand by a trusted barmaid.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16We just couldn't believe it. Everybody was shocked.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29Back to Ashford in Kent where, in the early hours of the morning,

0:15:29 > 0:15:33a violent attempted robbery has been taking place in a shop.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36This young woman is wielding a large carving knife

0:15:36 > 0:15:40with which she's been attacking Michael, the 60-year-old cashier.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43Now, she's using a wine bottle as a weapon.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Michael has bravely locked her inside the shop alone with him

0:15:46 > 0:15:50to protect the people outside and he's trying to calm her down.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52I was saying, "I've locked the doors.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55"They can't get in and I'm not opening the doors to let you out

0:15:55 > 0:15:57"because you might have a go at them".

0:15:57 > 0:16:01My idea was that I was protecting them as well as herself by keeping

0:16:01 > 0:16:03the situation contained in the shop.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07But the woman is having none of it and continues her threats.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11Outside, the police have now arrived much to Michael's relief.

0:16:11 > 0:16:12When the police turned up,

0:16:12 > 0:16:15I was relieved to see that the end was in sight.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17But the woman is not about to give up.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21Now she also threatens PCs Ryan Duffy and Jason Gisby

0:16:21 > 0:16:23who are outside the door.

0:16:23 > 0:16:28The first thing I see is this woman with a wine bottle in her hands.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30She appeared very agitated, very angry...

0:16:30 > 0:16:33She smashes it against the front door.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36..and from her demeanour, she would be ready to use it on us.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39- But it's Michael they fear for most.- We know Michael.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41We've chatted to him many times in the past.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44He appeared very distressed, very shaken up.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46There was a risk that she would return to him.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49It was right to get in there as quickly as possible.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52Throughout his ordeal, Michael has kept a cool head

0:16:52 > 0:16:56and now he signals another way in to Ryan and Jason.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59If they went around to the other door at the back, they can get in

0:16:59 > 0:17:03because I can open that door without her being able to get out.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06The police get the message and equip themselves to arrest

0:17:06 > 0:17:11the violent woman without injury to Michael or the woman or themselves.

0:17:11 > 0:17:15Ryan gets a riot shield while Jason arms himself with pepper spray.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20While other officers distract the woman at the front of the store,

0:17:20 > 0:17:23Michael opens the back door by pressing a button.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27Ryan and Jason enter. Once inside, they split up.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30Jason calls out to the woman to draw her over, but she's in no mood

0:17:30 > 0:17:34to come quietly and walks towards him with the broken bottle.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38Ryan steps out from an aisle behind her as she approaches Jason.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40She was jabbing the broken bottle towards my face.

0:17:40 > 0:17:44I instantly pulled my pepper spray and sprayed it towards her face.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47Ryan has come behind her almost at the same time

0:17:47 > 0:17:49and has struck her with a shield.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52They got her down but she still struggles.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56Just wildly throwing her hand around with this broken bottle.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59She finally gives in and they handcuff her.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01It's a good, safe arrest.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03That was it, basically. All over and done with.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07They took over and I could relax. HE LAUGHS

0:18:07 > 0:18:10While and officer takes a look at Michael's cut hand,

0:18:10 > 0:18:14the police help the woman recover from the pepper spray.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16She was polite, she spoke to us.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18When a person has been exposed to pepper spray

0:18:18 > 0:18:21we have a duty of care to them and after-care,

0:18:21 > 0:18:23so we usually sit them still,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26advise them not to rub their eyes and give them other advice.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28The woman is taken to the police station

0:18:28 > 0:18:29and Michael goes home.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34He turns up for work again the very next day,

0:18:34 > 0:18:36but he soon realises that the robbery

0:18:36 > 0:18:38has affected him more than he thinks.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41I couldn't stop crying, so...

0:18:41 > 0:18:43erm...they sent me home.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47I think it was just shock, basically, over the next two days.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51I went and saw a therapist for a few weeks to sort of, like,

0:18:51 > 0:18:53get it out of my system.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55Now, I don't think nothing of it.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57You know, it happened.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59It's gone and done and, er, life goes on.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02It's a reminder of exactly how much these crimes

0:19:02 > 0:19:05affect the innocent people involved.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12In court, she pleads guilty and is sentenced to six years in prison.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20Michael is given a special commendation for his courage

0:19:20 > 0:19:23and determination to stop the violent woman

0:19:23 > 0:19:26and contain her safely until the police could arrive.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29He was receives a Certificate of Bravery

0:19:29 > 0:19:33from the High Sheriff of Kent's office and a special cash award.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37I suppose, to get any reward is a nice feeling.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40To get one you can actually display on the wall

0:19:40 > 0:19:42and say to your children, your grandchildren,

0:19:42 > 0:19:46"That's your grandad", you know, that's got to be nice.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48That is nice.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56Mercifully, it's very unlikely any of us

0:19:56 > 0:19:58will ever face an attack like that.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Michael bravely took on his attacker,

0:20:01 > 0:20:04but is that wise to do so if someone is wielding a weapon?

0:20:04 > 0:20:07My advice would be to try and back away.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09Don't try and intervene.

0:20:09 > 0:20:10Try and call 999 if at all possible,

0:20:10 > 0:20:13if it's not going to aggravate the person with the knife.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16You might not be able to talk to us, but we can still listen.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18We can still hear what's going on.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20We can figure out who the phone belongs to

0:20:20 > 0:20:23and we can start to do the work to locate you and get help.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25You need to keep your distance from somebody.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29We call it the "fighting arc", so we put our arms out and if somebody

0:20:29 > 0:20:33is at an arm's length from you, then that gives you a fighting chance.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37Think calmly and then look for your best escape route

0:20:37 > 0:20:38if it's safe to do so.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42If it's not safe and you need to engage in some kind of conversation

0:20:42 > 0:20:46with that person to keep them calm and de-escalate

0:20:46 > 0:20:49any kind of threat until the police arrive, then do that.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57We'd all like to think we could trust the people we work with.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59After all, we spend a lot of time with them.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01So what if some money went missing

0:21:01 > 0:21:04and it could only be someone who is close to us?

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Accrington, Lancashire.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16A tricky issue at a bar called Tricky's.

0:21:16 > 0:21:17Totally, totally shocked.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20In all the times I've had pubs in, say, over 30 years,

0:21:20 > 0:21:23it's the first time anything like that's happened.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26Money has been disappearing from this popular local pub,

0:21:26 > 0:21:27but who is taking it?

0:21:27 > 0:21:30I bet all eyes were actually on me!

0:21:30 > 0:21:33The owner has a trick up his sleeve, a hidden camera.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35It looks like a smoke alarm.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37The camera is built inside so you can't see it.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40The camera is there in case of trouble at the bar,

0:21:40 > 0:21:43not for secretly spying on the people he knows and trusts.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45Difficult, very difficult.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51Accrington.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Famed for its football team

0:21:53 > 0:21:56and making the hardest building bricks in the world,

0:21:56 > 0:21:58it's also home to Tricky's.

0:21:58 > 0:22:02- It's named after its owner. - Well, sort of.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05It's Richard, so the nickname for Richard is Dick.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Dickie, Dickie Mint, Tricky, Tricky Mint,

0:22:08 > 0:22:11Tricky Dicky and it fell to Tricky Dicky.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14It stayed like that so we just shortened it to Tricky,

0:22:14 > 0:22:17and some call me things I can't say on camera!

0:22:17 > 0:22:22After running pubs on and off for 30 years, now, at the age of 70,

0:22:22 > 0:22:25running Tricky's is Richard's dream come true.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28From the first time I ever came in, I've always wanted this pub

0:22:28 > 0:22:29and I finally did get it.

0:22:29 > 0:22:34The bar is a firm local favourite and a fun place to be.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38Tricky's is the place where you've got all your regulars.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41Sunday afternoons is brilliant. In fact, every day is.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43I love working here.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45Love working here.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48Richard's staff are all local, including three young sisters.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51Some others, like Sharon, have known him for years.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54It's one big, happy family.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57He's not a pushover, but he's not...

0:22:57 > 0:22:59He's not strict and, you know, he lets...

0:22:59 > 0:23:01As long as we're doing our job.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03Even this easy-going and trusting boss

0:23:03 > 0:23:07had to have security cameras installed when he took the place on.

0:23:07 > 0:23:11It's actually part of your licence now to have CCTV

0:23:11 > 0:23:15and someone that can use it if there are any incidents.

0:23:15 > 0:23:19So far, Richard has never needed to check footage from any

0:23:19 > 0:23:23of the cameras, including the one in the smoke alarm overlooking the bar.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25I even forgot it was there myself.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29But one Friday night, that all changes.

0:23:29 > 0:23:34Richard comes to work to find there's no £20 notes in the till.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36At first, he's not too worried.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39It's been a quiet night... So what?

0:23:39 > 0:23:40Other nights are good.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44But the next Friday isn't any better so Richard checks the coin drawer

0:23:44 > 0:23:47to see if any of the 20s have been wrongly put in there.

0:23:47 > 0:23:48But, no.

0:23:48 > 0:23:52And he's shocked to discover there are coins missing, too.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55There was £80 missing in pound coins.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58He asks Sharon the next day about the missing money,

0:23:58 > 0:24:01as she works the early evening shift on Fridays.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03She said, "Check under the till.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07"All the money's there." I'm saying, "What money? There's no money there."

0:24:07 > 0:24:08She said, "Are you joking?

0:24:08 > 0:24:11"I had a really good night last night up to six.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13"There's loads of money there".

0:24:13 > 0:24:16But there isn't. Richard can only think the worst.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19There's a thief about and it has to be one of the people

0:24:19 > 0:24:21he trusts like family.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23Totally, totally shocked.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26The most likely suspects are the Friday staff.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29That's Sharon and a popular 21-year-old girl

0:24:29 > 0:24:31who's one of the three sisters that worked there.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34We've known the family for many, many years.

0:24:34 > 0:24:38My stepdaughter is a big friend of her mother's.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41I bet all eyes were actually on me!

0:24:41 > 0:24:43You know? It's horrible.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Richard knows he must check his CCTV footage,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51but first, he calls the staff together

0:24:51 > 0:24:53to give the culprit a chance to own up.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55Sharon gets the wrong end of the stick.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57My hand went straight up!

0:24:59 > 0:25:01I've got a bit of a thing for Pepperami.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04So I told him, basically,

0:25:04 > 0:25:07"You might see me with a few of them stuffed in my mouth!"

0:25:08 > 0:25:11No-one owns up so Richard goes off to look at the footage

0:25:11 > 0:25:15in a room on his own and this is what he sees.

0:25:16 > 0:25:20The 21-year-old sister has just taken over the shift from Sharon.

0:25:20 > 0:25:24She appears too busy herself with the usual barmaid duties,

0:25:24 > 0:25:27but appearances can be deceiving,

0:25:27 > 0:25:32because, on a closer look, she also shows some skilful sleight of hand.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35While customers are lost in conversation,

0:25:35 > 0:25:38the young barmaid takes four bags of £2 coins

0:25:38 > 0:25:42out of the change drawer and puts them in her handbag.

0:25:43 > 0:25:47That's the £80 that was missing when I checked later on in the night.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49But that's just for starters.

0:25:49 > 0:25:53Half an hour later, the barmaid decides she deserves another tip.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58She lifts the drawer in the till containing the 20s,

0:25:58 > 0:26:02grabs a handful and leaves them right next to her handbag.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05Ten minutes later, she comes back

0:26:05 > 0:26:08and shoves the notes inside the bag.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10She's making room in her bag for more money.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12She's pushing the coins to one side

0:26:12 > 0:26:14plus the notes she's already taken.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16After another 45 minutes,

0:26:16 > 0:26:19the barmaid decides to get another round in.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21A few more 20s on the house.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Rewinding back to her previous Friday shift,

0:26:26 > 0:26:28he sees the same routine.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Pull some pints, pull some more money.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34Richard decides it's time to call last orders.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37He tells the rest of the staff who has been stealing.

0:26:37 > 0:26:38We were all really gobsmacked.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40They just couldn't believe it.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43Everybody was shocked. The sisters were just in tears.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45He's looked at her as a daughter, you know.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49He even said to us, I look at her like family.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52Richard confronts the young barmaid.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56I asked her why. She was just crying, crying, crying,

0:26:56 > 0:26:59as I suppose you would do when you've been found out,

0:26:59 > 0:27:00saying she was so sorry.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05When I said, "How much have you taken?" she said, "I don't know".

0:27:05 > 0:27:07She's just spent it.

0:27:07 > 0:27:08And then she went.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12Leaving Richard with a dilemma.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16I thought, "Well, if it's just a few hundred pounds,

0:27:16 > 0:27:19"I'm going to ruin this kid's life,

0:27:19 > 0:27:21"so, I'm not going to go to the police."

0:27:21 > 0:27:24But, at that point, we didn't know what she'd taken.

0:27:24 > 0:27:25Richard becomes less forgiving

0:27:25 > 0:27:29when he sees the barmaid's attitude on a social media site.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33He decides it might be better if she learns a lesson.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36She was showing off her new dresses and designer gear

0:27:36 > 0:27:38and bags and shoes.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41I just thought, she is just taking the Mick here.

0:27:41 > 0:27:42He takes action.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44So, I went down to the police station,

0:27:44 > 0:27:46made a formal complaint.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50The barmaid pleads guilty.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54She is sentenced to 12 months community supervision

0:27:54 > 0:27:57and ordered to pay £500 in compensation.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04Things are now a lot less tricky at Tricky's.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07The two other sisters work here. They'll continue to work here.

0:28:07 > 0:28:08There's nothing wrong with the girls.

0:28:08 > 0:28:12Of the staff I've got at the moment, I think they'll be OK.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14Although, just to be on the safe side,

0:28:14 > 0:28:17Richard has since upgraded his CCTV system.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19I dread to think what he's seen on them.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22I dread to think what he's seen on them cameras with us lot!

0:28:22 > 0:28:25We didn't know half of 'em were here!

0:28:25 > 0:28:27Barmaids beware!

0:28:30 > 0:28:31That's it for today.

0:28:31 > 0:28:34Join us next time when police and the public

0:28:34 > 0:28:36will be catching more criminals red-handed.
