0:03:23 > 0:03:27Stephen spent eight years in the army before meeting Vicky.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29Since then, they've run a number of pubs,
0:03:29 > 0:03:32spending many a happy hour together.
0:03:32 > 0:03:36We're soul mates, we're best friends, we're a pair of slippers.

0:04:13 > 0:04:18It's Sunday evening on the busiest weekend of the year.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32It was the day before Christmas Eve.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34It was the first night that our furniture has been delivered.
0:04:34 > 0:04:38And it was our first night to just be able to sit down...
0:04:40 > 0:04:43..and watch a bit of telly.
0:04:43 > 0:04:44But there's a real-life Christmas
0:04:44 > 0:04:47crime drama about to unfold downstairs.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52Four men wearing balaclavas walk up the alleyway...
0:04:53 > 0:04:55..and head inside the pub.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58They grab the terrified barmaid...
0:04:59 > 0:05:01..and tie her hands together.
0:05:03 > 0:05:09We just heard a bit of banging but never gave it a thought.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11The masked gang are armed.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15Two have knives, one has a hammer, and the fourth grabs

0:05:18 > 0:05:20They're dangerous men
0:05:20 > 0:05:23and they make their way up the stairs towards Steve and Vicky.
0:05:23 > 0:05:24The door flew open.
0:05:24 > 0:05:28And there was a guy stood there with a balaclava on.
0:05:28 > 0:05:30At the time me and Steve laughed,
0:05:30 > 0:05:32because some friends of ours had been in,
0:05:32 > 0:05:35and we just thought they'd pulled a prank on us.
0:05:35 > 0:05:37So I got up and said, "This is in bad taste."
0:05:37 > 0:05:39The penny dropped.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42I just thought, "This is real. This is real. What do we do?"
0:05:42 > 0:05:45Steve acts instinctively to defend his wife.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48He launches himself at the men and starts fighting.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51Steve had no fear. No fear.
0:05:51 > 0:05:55He just jumped up and wanted to tackle them all.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58I think it was more adrenaline than anything, and anger.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00I thought,
0:06:00 > 0:06:02"Are we going to get killed?"
0:06:02 > 0:06:05One of them put a knife to my wife's throat and said,
0:06:05 > 0:06:07"Behave or she gets it."
0:06:07 > 0:06:12He would have carried on fighting if they hadn't turned onto me.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15I just behaved and basically did what was said then.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18They were just screaming at us, "Stay down! Stay down!"
0:06:18 > 0:06:19That's all that...
0:06:19 > 0:06:21Even now, I still have it in my head.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24The robbers make it clear they want the weekend's takings
0:06:24 > 0:06:27and demand to be taken to the office.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29I stood up, because I was going to take them to the office,
0:06:29 > 0:06:30and they said, "Not you."
0:06:30 > 0:06:36They got hold of the back of my hair and dragged me into the office.
0:06:36 > 0:06:39I panicked, because they were asking for the safe keys.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42Vicky didn't know where any of the keys were, so they tipped
0:06:42 > 0:06:45the filing cabinet upside down, which had all the keys in.
0:06:45 > 0:06:47And they said, "You will get hurt.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49"Stop messing about. Where are the keys?"
0:06:49 > 0:06:53They found a set of keys for what we call the change safe.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57The two robbers with Vicky steal £1,000 from the change safe.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00The other two robbers guard Steve. Separated and cut off,
0:07:00 > 0:07:04the couple are terrified for each other's safety.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06I thought, "Is he all right? Where is he?"
0:07:06 > 0:07:07"What have they done to him?"
0:07:07 > 0:07:09The first thing I thought is,
0:07:09 > 0:07:11"Have I made it worse?"
0:07:11 > 0:07:14I didn't know whether Steve were alive or dead.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17Convinced there's more money to be had, the two men with Vicky
0:07:17 > 0:07:21continued to search for the keys to the main safe.
0:07:21 > 0:07:22But also in this office
0:07:22 > 0:07:26are the monitors for the pub's CCTV system.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29And suddenly, some unexpected movement on a downstairs
0:07:29 > 0:07:31camera draws the robbers' attention.
0:07:31 > 0:07:35One of the regulars walked back into our pub.
0:07:35 > 0:07:37The pub is still open.
0:07:37 > 0:07:39The robbers have forgotten to lock the front door.
0:07:39 > 0:07:43The other robber who'd got hold of me from behind had seen it.
0:07:43 > 0:07:48And said, "Somebody's walked in. Go downstairs and sort it.
0:07:48 > 0:07:50"It needs sorting. Sort him out."
0:07:50 > 0:07:52The customer hears the barmaid and goes over to her.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57He unties her, then heads to the back of the pub.
0:07:57 > 0:08:01The barmaid tries to run for it, but it's too late.
0:08:01 > 0:08:04Off-camera, the armed robber catches her and the customer
0:08:04 > 0:08:07and forces them upstairs.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09They're put next to Steve on the settee.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11He's dismayed to see them.
0:08:11 > 0:08:14He's been waiting for the slightest opportunity for he
0:08:14 > 0:08:18and Vicky to escape, but more people means less chance of that.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20Now you've got to behave even more
0:08:20 > 0:08:23because there's more people to be threatened.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26What Steve doesn't know is that the distraction of the customer
0:08:26 > 0:08:29does give Vicky a chance to slip away.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31For a moment, there's only one robber with her,
0:08:31 > 0:08:34and he's busy searching for keys.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36That split second I just saw the gap
0:08:36 > 0:08:39for me to get away. And I just ran.
0:08:39 > 0:08:42But Vicky's only escape route is upstairs.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45I thought of jumping out of the window on the third floor, to just
0:08:45 > 0:08:49get out to try and raise the alarm to police or just scream and scream.
0:08:49 > 0:08:53But I panicked because I knew I couldn't jump that far down.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56Vicky has no option but to hide in a cupboard
0:08:56 > 0:08:58and pray they don't find her.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01I was just trying to keep so quiet, trying not to breathe
0:09:01 > 0:09:04so they couldn't hear me breathing.
0:09:04 > 0:09:06Steve is unaware that Vicky is now hiding,
0:09:06 > 0:09:10and he senses that the robbers are starting to panic.
0:09:10 > 0:09:12They were flapping because it was obviously not
0:09:12 > 0:09:14going as well as they thought it was going to go.
0:09:16 > 0:09:20Steve comes up with a way to get the menacing robbers downstairs,
0:09:20 > 0:09:24away from Vicky, to give him a chance to take the advantage.
0:09:24 > 0:09:28It was just a case of that if you fight back they're either
0:09:28 > 0:09:30going to do something, or they're going to run.
0:09:30 > 0:09:31It's four against one.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33How can Steve turn the tables?
0:09:39 > 0:09:42If at first you don't succeed, well, if you're a burglar,
0:09:42 > 0:09:44best not to try again.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47The second time, they might be ready for you.
0:09:47 > 0:09:49The police have him in the palm of their hands,
0:09:49 > 0:09:51thanks to some useful technology.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54Andy's gadgets have made this job for us.
0:09:54 > 0:09:56And a dodgy rubbish dumper.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58He thinks he's getting clean away with it,
0:09:58 > 0:10:01but can the council do the dirty on him?
0:10:08 > 0:10:09But first,
0:10:09 > 0:10:13this man is just leaving a bank with a load of cash.
0:10:13 > 0:10:17Nothing unusual there, you might say, but this is a bank robber.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19He thinks everything's going to plan,
0:10:19 > 0:10:24but he suddenly suffers a drop in the bank rate. Oh, dear.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27He didn't bring anything to put the bundles of notes into.
0:10:27 > 0:10:30A case of cash and can't carry.
0:10:31 > 0:10:33He spots an abandoned umbrella.
0:10:33 > 0:10:36Not the most obvious choice of swag bag.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38To completely rain on his parade,
0:10:38 > 0:10:40the clerks have pushed a button
0:10:40 > 0:10:42behind the counter to alert the local police.
0:10:43 > 0:10:48The man does eventually make it out of the bank, but not very far.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51Trying to escape the police, this wally with the brolly
0:10:51 > 0:10:55slipped on a patch of ice, banging his head in the process.
0:10:55 > 0:10:58Convicted of robbery, he's sentenced to ten years in jail.
0:10:58 > 0:11:00It never rains but it pours.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09Pretty versatile these mobile phones.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11Texting, making calls, taking photographs.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14And sometimes it seems, catching criminals.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24This is the inside of an office in Watford.
0:11:24 > 0:11:28But it's outside office hours. All is quiet, but not for long.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31Just watch the door.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34This is a break-in.
0:11:34 > 0:11:38And the size nines thumping that door belong to a burglar,
0:11:38 > 0:11:40who's had his kicks here once before.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43This is a burglar who hasn't learned his lesson.
0:11:43 > 0:11:44It's one of those jobs,
0:11:44 > 0:11:49as a police officer, that you think, "I can't believe this is happening."
0:11:49 > 0:11:50Yes.
0:11:50 > 0:11:54This same thief has already been caught by police
0:11:54 > 0:11:57only two weeks earlier, breaking into this very same office.
0:11:57 > 0:12:01That time, he left behind a trail of devastation.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04Blood everywhere and just a mess.
0:12:04 > 0:12:07Now, while out on bail for that crime,
0:12:07 > 0:12:10unbelievably, he's come back again.
0:12:10 > 0:12:14But we'll see how Andy, the gadget-loving owner of the company,
0:12:14 > 0:12:17has everything in hand to put this felon in the frame.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20Andy's gadgets have made this job for us.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22You're there, and you can see the person there,
0:12:22 > 0:12:26and you're thinking, "We're going to get him, we're going to get him."
0:12:30 > 0:12:32Lisa, I've got quite an interesting candidate
0:12:32 > 0:12:35I think you'd like to meet.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37Andy Price started up his recruitment business
0:12:37 > 0:12:41in Watford, Hertfordshire, five years ago. Their job is
0:12:41 > 0:12:43to recruit staff for internet companies.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46We have really worked hard to build the company to what it is today.
0:12:46 > 0:12:49We've got a really good team of people working with us.
0:12:49 > 0:12:50It means a lot.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54It's the sort of business where computers are vital.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57To have them stolen would be very damaging.
0:12:57 > 0:12:59From a business point of view, it's a nightmare.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02Time and money are lost. So if a business like
0:13:02 > 0:13:04Andy's is targeted several times,
0:13:04 > 0:13:07the consequences can be disastrous.
0:13:07 > 0:13:11Detective Constable Julie Vint is committed
0:13:11 > 0:13:13to catching burglars who raid offices.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16There is no greater satisfaction for us,
0:13:16 > 0:13:20to be able to put people behind bars who constantly do this,
0:13:20 > 0:13:24who don't realise the ramifications of what they do.
0:13:24 > 0:13:28Andy and his staff have already faced the aftermath of a break-in
0:13:28 > 0:13:30once before, on a weekday morning.
0:13:30 > 0:13:34The burglar then had damaged the office and injured himself,
0:13:34 > 0:13:36leaving behind some vital evidence.
0:13:36 > 0:13:39I found things hanging from the ceiling,
0:13:39 > 0:13:41I found blood all over the office.
0:13:41 > 0:13:42Everybody was a bit shocked.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44It was a bit of a strange environment.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46We weren't sure what to do, to be honest.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49A moving experience, I guess, for everyone here that had
0:13:49 > 0:13:52come in to find that all of their personal possessions had been taken.
0:13:52 > 0:13:56During that burglary, two business computers were also stolen,
0:13:56 > 0:13:58worth £1,600.
0:13:59 > 0:14:03The police took away DNA samples from blood found in the office.
0:14:03 > 0:14:06They also took CCTV footage from the building's foyer.
0:14:08 > 0:14:12It shows a man, with a bike, wearing a distinctive bobble hat.
0:14:12 > 0:14:14The man is identified from his blood
0:14:14 > 0:14:18and from these pictures. It's 40-year-old Kevin Corkhill.
0:14:18 > 0:14:20He's arrested and charged.
0:14:20 > 0:14:24He pleaded guilty, and was then subsequently released by
0:14:24 > 0:14:28the courts on bail pending sentencing for those offences.
0:14:28 > 0:14:31For the moment, Corkhill remains a free man.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34Meanwhile, the break-in convinces Andy
0:14:34 > 0:14:36to invest in some special technical
0:14:36 > 0:14:41equipment for the office, to try and prevent further burglaries.
0:14:41 > 0:14:42I'm a bit of a gadget freak.
0:14:42 > 0:14:46Love gadgets. I've installed cameras and in here
0:14:46 > 0:14:49we can see live footage of what's going on right now.
0:14:49 > 0:14:53This is more than a standard CCTV system.
0:14:53 > 0:14:54The camera pictures are streamed
0:14:54 > 0:14:56live on the internet to Andy's phone.
0:14:56 > 0:15:01They activate when they sense motion or detect sound.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03It sends an alert through to my phone to click on the link and it
0:15:03 > 0:15:06takes me straight through to their app, which shows me the live feed.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08It's just amazing.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12Two weeks later, the cameras are put to the test.
0:15:12 > 0:15:14It's Valentine's Day
0:15:14 > 0:15:18and Andy's romantic evening with his wife gets rudely interrupted.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21It's not exactly the surprise you're looking for.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23At 10pm at night on Valentine's Day,
0:15:23 > 0:15:26is an alarm on your mobile to let you know that someone's
0:15:26 > 0:15:29standing in the business that you've worked hard to build up.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31Andy's Valentine's evening is ruined.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34He's glued to the live view of his office, where the cameras
0:15:34 > 0:15:37have picked up the sound of the door being smashed open.
0:15:37 > 0:15:40THUDDING
0:15:42 > 0:15:46The burglar first disappears next door to a kitchen area,
0:15:46 > 0:15:51then re-emerges with some black bags and one yellow rubber glove.
0:15:51 > 0:15:52Andy can't believe it.
0:15:52 > 0:15:54He recognises the burglar as the
0:15:54 > 0:15:57same man who broke in two weeks ago, Kevin Corkhill.
0:15:57 > 0:16:01I immediately thought, "He's come back for more."
0:16:01 > 0:16:03Sickening feeling. He's going to go for the lot.
0:16:03 > 0:16:06He's going to go for everything, so I must stop him.
0:16:06 > 0:16:07Andy calls the police.
0:16:07 > 0:16:11Within four minutes of the call being made to us, we had officers
0:16:11 > 0:16:15at the building, containing the building, surrounding the building.
0:16:15 > 0:16:18Corkhill, blissfully unaware that police have the building
0:16:18 > 0:16:21locked down, carries on stealing computer equipment,
0:16:21 > 0:16:23wearing one yellow glove on his right hand.
0:16:23 > 0:16:26Maybe he's trying to avoid leaving another trail of blood,
0:16:26 > 0:16:29like he did on his previous visit.
0:16:29 > 0:16:31He has probably thought, "I'm going to be canny this time,
0:16:31 > 0:16:35"and I'm not going to get caught through my forensics."
0:16:35 > 0:16:38I'm not quite sure why he only put one rubber glove on.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40Yes. There's a small flaw in his plan.
0:16:40 > 0:16:43He's still leaving finger prints with his left hand.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46Meanwhile, Andy is on his way to the office.
0:16:46 > 0:16:50I arrived at the office to find the building completely
0:16:50 > 0:16:53surrounded with police vans, dogs, cars.
0:16:53 > 0:16:56A unique set of circumstances has developed.
0:16:56 > 0:17:00Upstairs, there's the burglar, who is oblivious to the police presence.
0:17:00 > 0:17:04Outside, downstairs, there's Andy and the police, watching
0:17:04 > 0:17:09live pictures of the burglary happening in front of their eyes.
0:17:09 > 0:17:11It's one of those jobs that you think
0:17:11 > 0:17:13you were never actually going to get.
0:17:13 > 0:17:16You're never going to actually find someone actually in the building, and
0:17:16 > 0:17:18it's such a wonderful feeling,
0:17:18 > 0:17:20knowing that you are going to catch your man.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23Just after Corkhill raids Andy's desk, he moves
0:17:23 > 0:17:27across to the left-hand side, and finally looks out of the window.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30He obviously sees the blue flashing lights outside and realises the game
0:17:30 > 0:17:35is up and that's when you see him panic and run, complete with bags.
0:17:35 > 0:17:37Corkhill runs upstairs.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42Moments later, the police dog teams arrive.
0:17:42 > 0:17:46We let the dog unit go in first, because we want to get a track.
0:17:46 > 0:17:49We don't want to go in there and all he'll be able to smell is us.
0:17:49 > 0:17:53They pick up the burglar's scent and head up after him.
0:17:53 > 0:17:55Our dog unit has tracked him to the fifth floor,
0:17:55 > 0:17:57where he's hiding behind a door.
0:17:57 > 0:18:00The dogs entered that office and I believe they bit him
0:18:00 > 0:18:02as they arrested him.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05They've got their man, but there's no sign of the stolen goods.
0:18:05 > 0:18:07They start a search.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10Next thing, we have one of the officers shout, "Bingo!"
0:18:10 > 0:18:13They find it in the ceiling of the first-floor gent's toilets.
0:18:13 > 0:18:15We got back our computers
0:18:15 > 0:18:18and all of the equipment that he tried to steal.
0:18:18 > 0:18:20So it was fantastic.
0:18:21 > 0:18:23This time, not surprisingly,
0:18:23 > 0:18:26Corkhill is not released on bail, but kept in custody.
0:18:26 > 0:18:29He's given two years in prison.
0:18:33 > 0:18:36Gadget-mad Andy's hi-tech security system
0:18:36 > 0:18:38has certainly paid off.
0:18:38 > 0:18:40It's all very well having CCTV and then you suddenly, you know,
0:18:40 > 0:18:43maybe you would have gone in the next day and you're suddenly,
0:18:43 > 0:18:45"Oh, I've been broken into." But the fact is,
0:18:45 > 0:18:49he had CCTV that goes straight to his mobile phone, and because
0:18:49 > 0:18:50of that, he was able to phone us
0:18:50 > 0:18:54straightaway, dialling 999, and we were there within minutes.
0:18:54 > 0:18:56It's quite a cool piece of kit, to be honest.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58Without that, we may not have caught him.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00It does everything I want it to do.
0:19:00 > 0:19:02I can't be more grateful for it, to be honest with you.
0:19:02 > 0:19:04£150 and we caught the guy red-handed.
0:19:09 > 0:19:11How stupid was that burglar,
0:19:11 > 0:19:14returning to somewhere that he previously burgled?
0:19:14 > 0:19:16Well, it seems, he's not alone.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18Burglars do sometimes return for a second bite
0:19:18 > 0:19:20at your apple.
0:19:20 > 0:19:22Or Samsung, or Dell.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24If you've been a victim of burglary,
0:19:24 > 0:19:26most thieves know that the first thing you're going to do,
0:19:26 > 0:19:30once you get your insurance money, is to go out and replace those
0:19:30 > 0:19:33goods, so think about, if you do replace those goods,
0:19:33 > 0:19:35what are you doing with the boxes?
0:19:35 > 0:19:37Are you leaving them outside your address?
0:19:37 > 0:19:40Because that is an advert for a thief that actually you've
0:19:40 > 0:19:44got the new laptop, new TV, so think about where you
0:19:44 > 0:19:47dispose of that rubbish and don't make your house be a target again.
0:19:47 > 0:19:51You don't have to live in Fort Knox and be a prisoner in your home.
0:19:51 > 0:19:55What you can do a simple little things to stop you being
0:19:55 > 0:19:58a victim of crime again, and that could be a gravel drive,
0:19:58 > 0:20:01so you can hear the person coming up the drive toward your house,
0:20:01 > 0:20:03it could be a motion sensor light,
0:20:03 > 0:20:06to scare them off once they come into your property,
0:20:06 > 0:20:09or it could be a CCTV camera, even in a dummy box,
0:20:09 > 0:20:13something that makes them think we are here and we're waiting for you.
0:20:17 > 0:20:20Now, one group of offenders who repeatedly return to the
0:20:20 > 0:20:22scene of the crime are the fly-tippers,
0:20:22 > 0:20:25spoiling the street, dumping their rubbish on the rest of us.
0:20:25 > 0:20:30But the councils are beginning to catch them doing their dirty deeds.
0:20:35 > 0:20:37If you go down to these woods tonight,
0:20:37 > 0:20:39you'll definitely be sure of a big surprise.
0:20:39 > 0:20:41Well, you'd surprise this guy anyway,
0:20:41 > 0:20:43because he's illegally dumping rubbish.
0:20:43 > 0:20:47But what he doesn't realise is that he's being filmed doing it.
0:20:49 > 0:20:52Salford City Council decided to hit back at fly-tippers
0:20:52 > 0:20:54by installing multiple covert cameras
0:20:54 > 0:20:56at known hot spots.
0:20:56 > 0:20:59It's dubbed operation Pandora,
0:20:59 > 0:21:00and the first culprit,
0:21:00 > 0:21:04out of the box with a box of rubbish, is this man.
0:21:04 > 0:21:05After shutting the boot...
0:21:05 > 0:21:08I mean, you wouldn't want to get the car wet on a rainy night,
0:21:08 > 0:21:12he gets yet more junk from the passenger seat.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14Another night and he's back,
0:21:14 > 0:21:17badly parked to dump even more waste.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21Bag after bag after bag of it.
0:21:21 > 0:21:24He scatters the contents of this one all over the ground,
0:21:24 > 0:21:29and brings the empty bag back to the car to recycle it, maybe?
0:21:29 > 0:21:32No. Most likely to bring even more rubbish.
0:21:32 > 0:21:36Salford Council understandably take a dim view of all of this
0:21:36 > 0:21:38and track him down.
0:21:38 > 0:21:39Pleading guilty to fly-tipping,
0:21:39 > 0:21:43the man bags himself a fine for his rubbishy behaviour.
0:21:43 > 0:21:46Maybe now he'll clean up his act.
0:21:56 > 0:22:00Back to Leeds, where at the Ship Inn, a terrifying robbery by four
0:22:00 > 0:22:02armed men is under way.
0:22:03 > 0:22:05The landlords, Steve and Vicky,
0:22:05 > 0:22:08are being held captive in different parts of the pub,
0:22:08 > 0:22:09but what Steve doesn't know is
0:22:09 > 0:22:12Vicky has managed to escape and is hiding.
0:22:12 > 0:22:15When I was in the cupboard, all I kept hearing was shouting.
0:22:15 > 0:22:19They were obviously shouting for me. I didn't know where Steve was.
0:22:19 > 0:22:22I didn't know where the customer was.
0:22:22 > 0:22:25I didn't know what had happened to the barmaid.
0:22:25 > 0:22:28In fact, Vicky's husband Steve plus a customer
0:22:28 > 0:22:32and a barmaid are all being held at knife-point in the living room.
0:22:32 > 0:22:36The robbers have already stolen £1,000 from the one safe,
0:22:36 > 0:22:40but they believe there's more cash somewhere else. They question Steve.
0:22:40 > 0:22:42They asked me where the rest of the money was,
0:22:42 > 0:22:45and I said I had dropped it in the night safe.
0:22:45 > 0:22:48They then said, "Where's today's takings?"
0:22:48 > 0:22:50I said, "Still in the till, we were open."
0:22:50 > 0:22:53That's when three of them escorted me downstairs.
0:22:53 > 0:22:54With no chance of getting
0:22:54 > 0:22:56at the money in the bank's night safe,
0:22:56 > 0:23:00the gang's last hope is to raid the till behind the bar.
0:23:00 > 0:23:03It's the opportunity that Steve's been waiting for, to lead the most
0:23:03 > 0:23:06dangerous members of the gang away from where
0:23:06 > 0:23:08he thinks Vicky's being held.
0:23:08 > 0:23:12The three that came downstairs were the three that were mainly armed.
0:23:13 > 0:23:17So both knives at this time and the hammer are downstairs.
0:23:17 > 0:23:19First, he tries to distract them.
0:23:20 > 0:23:24He hands over a tin, which contains about £300 in change.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26The gang make a grab for the cash.
0:23:26 > 0:23:29The other one who was supposed to be keeping an eye on me,
0:23:29 > 0:23:31was that interested in how much they were getting,
0:23:31 > 0:23:37he actually walked past me, leaving me next to a catering kitchen.
0:23:37 > 0:23:38Steve seizes the opportunity.
0:23:39 > 0:23:43They didn't even notice me go into the kitchen and pick up two knives.
0:23:43 > 0:23:47Now armed himself, Steve's looking to scare off the attackers.
0:23:47 > 0:23:49It was just a case of that
0:23:49 > 0:23:52if you fight back, they're either going to do something, or they're
0:23:52 > 0:23:56going to run. The other thing is, I'm probably dafter than they are.
0:23:56 > 0:23:57We can't show you all the footage
0:23:57 > 0:24:00because of the level of violence in the brief struggle that follows.
0:24:00 > 0:24:03Steve charges in for maximum shock value.
0:24:06 > 0:24:07And it works.
0:24:07 > 0:24:10Now, it's the robbers' turn to be desperate to escape.
0:24:10 > 0:24:12They pile out of the door.
0:24:12 > 0:24:14Even the man from upstairs,
0:24:14 > 0:24:17who's seen Steve in action on the CCTV monitor, makes a run for it.
0:24:20 > 0:24:23Steve immediately calls the police.
0:24:23 > 0:24:26So they're saying, "Keep on the line, keep on the line." I says,
0:24:26 > 0:24:27"No chance, I'm looking for my wife."
0:24:27 > 0:24:29He's desperate to find Vicky.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31I didn't know where she was,
0:24:31 > 0:24:33whether she'd been took by them or anything else.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36He, the barmaid and customer frantically search.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39Hiding in a cupboard, Vicky's unaware of what's
0:24:39 > 0:24:43happening downstairs. She still believes the robbers are in the pub.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45I heard Steve shouting me
0:24:47 > 0:24:50and I thought, "They're making him shout me.
0:24:50 > 0:24:51"They've got hold of him.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54"They can't find me, they're making Steve shout me."
0:24:54 > 0:24:56Vicky finally emerges ten minutes later,
0:24:56 > 0:24:59when she sees police in the hallway.
0:24:59 > 0:25:00My legs went to jelly.
0:25:00 > 0:25:02I just was in shock.
0:25:02 > 0:25:04Just wanted to be sick,
0:25:04 > 0:25:06asking where Steve is.
0:25:06 > 0:25:09An officer tells her the good news. Steve's safe.
0:25:09 > 0:25:11I just went straight down.
0:25:13 > 0:25:15The reaction of his face was just sort of
0:25:17 > 0:25:20drained from him, as though, "I'm OK."
0:25:20 > 0:25:24And mine was with him, when I saw him, and I just thought,
0:25:24 > 0:25:29"We're OK. We're all right. Yeah."
0:25:30 > 0:25:34When she actually came down, and she was all right, I just thought,
0:25:34 > 0:25:36"Thank Christ for that."
0:25:36 > 0:25:39After the immediate relief that their ordeal is over,
0:25:39 > 0:25:43the next priority for the police is tracking down the gang.
0:25:43 > 0:25:46The case lands on the desk of Detective Constable Rob Finn,
0:25:46 > 0:25:48of West Yorkshire Police.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51The robbery was particularly violent.
0:25:51 > 0:25:54I can only begin to imagine how terrifying an ordeal it was
0:25:54 > 0:25:57for the landlord, his wife, and the members of staff present.
0:25:57 > 0:25:59Steven makes his own decisions
0:25:59 > 0:26:02in how he's going to defend himself and his property.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05While his actions are very brave, the advice from myself and
0:26:05 > 0:26:07West Yorkshire Police would be to
0:26:07 > 0:26:09maintain personal safety at all times.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11The identity of the robbers is a mystery.
0:26:11 > 0:26:15There is no evidence to go on, apart from the pub's CCTV footage.
0:26:15 > 0:26:19After several months of painstaking investigation, DC Finn
0:26:19 > 0:26:23and his team tracked the gang's route through the city centre.
0:26:23 > 0:26:27We worked backwards, using various sources of CCTV based within
0:26:27 > 0:26:31the city centre to piece together the movements of the people.
0:26:31 > 0:26:33They link one of the robbers to a taxi.
0:26:33 > 0:26:36Then discover his cab had been booked by phone.
0:26:36 > 0:26:39From there, we were able to identify
0:26:39 > 0:26:44the caller and this gave us a name and address.
0:26:44 > 0:26:48A 37-year-old man called Glen Hossack lives at that address.
0:26:48 > 0:26:50The police search the house and discover evidence,
0:26:50 > 0:26:55including a jumper with buttons on it, exactly the same as this.
0:26:55 > 0:26:57He is arrested.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03In court, Hossack is sentenced to six years in prison.
0:27:06 > 0:27:08But what about the other three robbers?
0:27:08 > 0:27:11We established the identities of the other three people involved.
0:27:11 > 0:27:14Subsequent enquiries showed that they're already serving
0:27:14 > 0:27:17lengthy sentences in jail for other offences.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20This meant that it wasn't in the public interest to pursue any
0:27:20 > 0:27:22charges against them in relation to our enquiry.
0:27:22 > 0:27:24With all of that time behind bars,
0:27:24 > 0:27:27hopefully they'll work out that crime doesn't pay.
0:27:27 > 0:27:29Steve's been doing his sums.
0:27:29 > 0:27:32All in all, they got away with about 600 quid a piece.
0:27:32 > 0:27:36So they got £100 for every year in prison.
0:27:36 > 0:27:37I do my maths every day!
0:27:39 > 0:27:42Since the raid, Steve and Vicky have upgraded their security with
0:27:42 > 0:27:45more CCTV cameras and steel gates.
0:27:45 > 0:27:49It had to be uprated for my wife to feel safe.
0:27:49 > 0:27:52The couple are soon back at the helm of the ship.
0:27:52 > 0:27:56Hopefully from now on it will all be plain sailing, but they will
0:27:56 > 0:28:00never forget how Steve managed to scare the armed robbers away.
0:28:00 > 0:28:04Once I look back on it, on CCTV, I probably thought, "You idiot."
0:28:06 > 0:28:10It wasn't the brightest moment I've ever had, but...
0:28:11 > 0:28:13..at the end of it, they legged it.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16He's my hero.
0:28:18 > 0:28:23My hero, when I saw him, and I thought, "I'm glad he did."
0:28:23 > 0:28:26Because if he hadn't, what would have happened?
0:28:31 > 0:28:32That's it for today.
0:28:32 > 0:28:34Join us next time,
0:28:34 > 0:28:37when police and the public will be catching more criminals red-handed.
