0:00:02 > 0:00:04Thieves will steal our cars,

0:00:04 > 0:00:09our valuables, just about anything they can get their hands on.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12To cut down on crime and anti-social behaviour,

0:00:12 > 0:00:15the police and other agencies are using new tactics and technology,

0:00:15 > 0:00:19where the bad guys are getting caught in the act.

0:00:19 > 0:00:20The CCTV was vital.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23- You can see they are definitely the people there. - The camera doesn't lie.

0:00:23 > 0:00:27Local councils, shops and businesses are laying some traps of their own.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29There's a eureka moment when you get that evidence.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30And the general public, too,

0:00:30 > 0:00:33can help unsuspecting crooks get their come-uppance.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35People won't stand by.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38I couldn't sit back and do nothing.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Yes, we've got her!

0:00:40 > 0:00:44So anyone who's up to no good had better think twice.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46They might just get caught red-handed.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Today, seeing this woman creep furtively across the floor

0:00:54 > 0:00:59of a disabled man's room comes as a nasty shock for his family.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02We played all the footage back and what we seen horrified us.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05What is going on?

0:01:05 > 0:01:06Also today...

0:01:06 > 0:01:11A Jekyll and Hyde transformation when this man walked into a shop.

0:01:11 > 0:01:12You would never suspect a thing.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15I just thought he was a regular customer.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18But suddenly the man turns into a violent robber,

0:01:18 > 0:01:19lashing out with a hammer.

0:01:19 > 0:01:24He actually said, "You have two seconds before I knock your head off."

0:01:24 > 0:01:27And a rat in a restaurant causes chaos,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30but it's not the only rat in the room.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32There's a twist in this tale!

0:01:44 > 0:01:45Kings Heath in Birmingham.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Give the birds their tea.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51Pat's a mother who's been a professional carer herself

0:01:51 > 0:01:55as well as caring at home for her disabled son Trevor for many years,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57so Pat knows a lot about caring

0:01:57 > 0:02:00and she thought she knew a lot about carers -

0:02:00 > 0:02:04until something happens that she finds truly shocking.

0:02:04 > 0:02:10She's using that vacuum to mask the sound of her trying to access a safe.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12And this is where she gets down on all fours,

0:02:12 > 0:02:16peeking around the corner at my son.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18It's no respect for him as a human being.

0:02:18 > 0:02:23She's just completely taking advantage of him.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Before she retired, 69-year-old Pat worked

0:02:33 > 0:02:37as a care assistant for the elderly with Birmingham Council.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40During that time, she also cared for son Trevor,

0:02:40 > 0:02:45so few people know more about what it takes to be a good carer.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Care workers are very special people.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50You have to be trustworthy, honest,

0:02:50 > 0:02:55and empower as many people to have a good life and feel respected.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01Pat's second son Trevor was born in 1967.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05She and her husband Eddie noticed Trevor developed rather slowly and,

0:03:05 > 0:03:10when he started school, they became even more concerned about his health.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Trevor started falling over at school and he was seen as being

0:03:13 > 0:03:17a bit of a nuisance to the staff and what have you.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20And then we went to Birmingham Children's Hospital

0:03:20 > 0:03:23and we were seen by a top neurologist,

0:03:23 > 0:03:27and he done a cephalograph on us, which was the best they had

0:03:27 > 0:03:32in those days, and he just said, "His brain's filling up with fluid.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34"He'll be dead in 12 months. Take him home and love him."

0:03:37 > 0:03:41It was terrible news but, thankfully, Trevor survived.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43There we go. Nice cup of coffee.

0:03:43 > 0:03:48His illness was shrouded in mystery, but was identified years

0:03:48 > 0:03:52later as generalised dystonia, a degenerative disease of the brain.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55It just means your nerve ends are no good,

0:03:55 > 0:03:57so you can't control things.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59His elbows will come in and his fingers will come up,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03and...he couldn't tie his own shoelaces.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06But he's got a wicked sense of humour. He really has!

0:04:09 > 0:04:12No sugar? Oh, dear! What a bad care worker I am!

0:04:16 > 0:04:19Can't get the staff today, can you, Trev?

0:04:21 > 0:04:26As he grew up, Trevor's family made sure he lived life to the full,

0:04:26 > 0:04:30but then tragedy struck twice in three years.

0:04:30 > 0:04:31His father was playing badminton

0:04:31 > 0:04:35when he suddenly collapsed with a heart attack and died.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Then it was Pat's turn.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42And then I had a heart attack myself at 49 and I thought then,

0:04:42 > 0:04:47"Oh, my God. I can just go out and pop off like his dad did."

0:04:47 > 0:04:51So I thought, "Really, I have to empower Trevor

0:04:51 > 0:04:52"for the rest of his life.

0:04:52 > 0:04:57"Let's try and get him to be as independent as possible in the community."

0:04:57 > 0:05:01Trevor embraced his new independence.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04He moved out to a flat and lived there successfully for several

0:05:04 > 0:05:09years before moving to this bungalow where he has more room.

0:05:09 > 0:05:14He's got everything a disabled person could need in here.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Pat helped put together a team of four care workers,

0:05:17 > 0:05:20so that Trevor can continue to live self-sufficiently.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24For months, things seemed to run smoothly.

0:05:24 > 0:05:29His care workers are so important to him and they're part of our

0:05:29 > 0:05:35extended family, so when one abuses the position, it breaks your heart.

0:05:37 > 0:05:42Pat begins to notice that items are going missing from the bungalow.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Honestly, you question your own mental ability.

0:05:44 > 0:05:50"Did I put two toothpastes there? Did I buy some extra shaving gel?"

0:05:50 > 0:05:52And cash is disappearing too.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54Housekeeping money is kept in a safe

0:05:54 > 0:05:56in the wardrobe in the spare room.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Only Pat and Trevor know the combination.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03Pat tops the cash up each week and Trevor takes it out, either to

0:06:03 > 0:06:08pay for something himself or to give to a carer to go out shopping.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13Trevor's main carer asked me if I was sure I'd put the right amount

0:06:13 > 0:06:16of money in and I thought, "Oh, my God, he thinks I've got dementia!"

0:06:16 > 0:06:19But it's not Pat's mind that's going.

0:06:19 > 0:06:24Someone is stealing and Pat believes it could only be one of the carers.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26You don't like to face up to it

0:06:26 > 0:06:29but it is, it's happening to your family.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33And I thought the only way I can ever prove it is to catch

0:06:33 > 0:06:35somebody red-handed.

0:06:35 > 0:06:40She decides to enlist the help of a friend from a security company

0:06:40 > 0:06:42and set up some cameras.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48I like to think I'm honest and open myself. They're not hidden at all

0:06:48 > 0:06:53and there's even a note on the front of the house - "Smile! You're on CCTV camera."

0:06:54 > 0:06:57She also changes the code for the safe.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01The cameras have only been recording for a few days

0:07:01 > 0:07:03when Pat visits Trevor.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06They decide to take a look at the pictures.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10We played all the footage back and what we seen horrified us.

0:07:10 > 0:07:11Absolutely horrified us.

0:07:15 > 0:07:20It's Saturday night and one of the carers has just arrived.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23Tonight, she is supposed to be spending time with Trevor,

0:07:23 > 0:07:29but heads straight into the spare room and opens the wardrobe.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32With no reason for her to be in there, there's only one explanation -

0:07:32 > 0:07:35she's trying to get into the safe.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38You can see this is Trevor's room and it's still in darkness.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40She hasn't opened the curtains,

0:07:40 > 0:07:45she hasn't shown any respect for the person's home she's in.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49The carer can't open the safe because Pat has changed the code,

0:07:49 > 0:07:52but she visits the spare room time and time again.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56Her behaviour is becoming increasingly bizarre.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Her role is not cleaning.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01She's in for a social call on a Saturday night.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03The safe does go "click, click, click, click"

0:08:03 > 0:08:05every time you press a number.

0:08:05 > 0:08:11She is using that vacuum to mask the sound of her trying to access the safe.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Returning on Sunday, she heads once again to the wardrobe.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20No, the safe still won't open.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25When we totted it up, she made at least 30 attempts to access

0:08:25 > 0:08:31that safe and she shut the door to stop anybody hearing.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35I can really imagine her being quite angry by now

0:08:35 > 0:08:38that we'd changed the code.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42And this is where she gets down on all fours like a dog,

0:08:42 > 0:08:46peeking around the corner at my son.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49How humiliated would you feel if that was your loved one?

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Pat's determined to bring the carer to justice.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57There is no footage of money actually being stolen but,

0:08:57 > 0:09:00with so many attempts caught on camera,

0:09:00 > 0:09:02she hopes it's enough evidence for the authorities.

0:09:02 > 0:09:07It became so important to me to protect other disabled

0:09:07 > 0:09:11and vulnerable adults because she can just flit from one

0:09:11 > 0:09:15family to another and, I couldn't morally...

0:09:15 > 0:09:17I couldn't let her do that.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21The police, the Crown Prosecution Service and the court agree.

0:09:25 > 0:09:29The woman is found guilty on two counts of attempted theft.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32She is given a 12-month suspended prison sentence

0:09:32 > 0:09:35and is ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Pat gets to hear the news.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45I got the phone call off the police and I absolutely cheered.

0:09:45 > 0:09:46Thank God it's over!

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Trevor soon recovered from the upset

0:09:50 > 0:09:53and continues to get on well with the rest of his carers.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55He's just got on with things

0:09:55 > 0:09:57and he's got wonderful people in his life.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00And everyone's happy to keep the cameras up.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04It was funny, really, because Trevor had a Valentine's card

0:10:04 > 0:10:06put through the door and he didn't know who it was from.

0:10:06 > 0:10:07SHE LAUGHS

0:10:07 > 0:10:11It was rather funny, so we went back through the footage

0:10:11 > 0:10:14and it was one of his care workers,

0:10:14 > 0:10:16which was awfully sweet of her.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18They are an extended family

0:10:18 > 0:10:20and I think that's a wonderful relationship.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Now, like a scene from a film,

0:10:27 > 0:10:31two burglars tried to steal a cash machine from a casino,

0:10:31 > 0:10:35but as heist movies go, this is less slick...

0:10:35 > 0:10:37more like slapstick.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46A casino cleaner goes to see what's causing a racket

0:10:46 > 0:10:50and runs in terror when two men smash through the door.

0:10:50 > 0:10:51She needn't have worried, though.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Turns out they're more of a danger to themselves.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58One of the burglars knocks over this sign -

0:10:58 > 0:11:00keep an eye on that -

0:11:00 > 0:11:02while the other follows with a trolley.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05They load up a heavy cash machine.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09One of the crooks then trips over the fallen sign.

0:11:10 > 0:11:11Ouch.

0:11:14 > 0:11:15Heaving the heavy machine back up,

0:11:15 > 0:11:19these clumsy criminals nearly forget their dropped crowbar.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21The pair drive off.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25But the last laugh is on them.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Their casino gamble doesn't pay off

0:11:27 > 0:11:31because the cash machine they stole is empty.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34They fail to see its out of service sign.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38Well, we already know they're not good at spotting signs.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41And with the footage going viral on the internet,

0:11:41 > 0:11:46this dumb duo must have red faces as well as empty pockets

0:11:46 > 0:11:47because now the whole world knows

0:11:47 > 0:11:50their raid was more crackpot than jackpot.

0:11:55 > 0:11:56Coming up...

0:11:56 > 0:11:58A restaurant owner fears for his livelihood

0:11:58 > 0:12:01after a rat runs out from under a table.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03You feel like the whole world's just fell out.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06But there may be more to this than meets the eye.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Is someone trying to rattle him?

0:12:13 > 0:12:15Sometimes, in just a few seconds,

0:12:15 > 0:12:18an ordinary day can turn into an extraordinary experience

0:12:18 > 0:12:21that we will never forget,

0:12:21 > 0:12:22but for all the wrong reasons.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31The peaceful, pleasant town centre of Godalming, Surrey.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33It's an unlikely setting for violence.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36But in one of these shops,

0:12:36 > 0:12:40a young assistant faces a terrifying ordeal

0:12:40 > 0:12:42when a customer viciously turns on her.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48He was like, "Give me all your money or I'll kill you within two seconds."

0:12:48 > 0:12:50I don't think any of us would expect

0:12:50 > 0:12:53to be confronted by somebody wielding a hammer.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55That moment, I thought, "Could I die?"

0:13:05 > 0:13:07This computer shop on Godalming High Street

0:13:07 > 0:13:12is part of a family-run chain that started in 1979.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14Mark is the general manager.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17It's grown from one premises to eight premises

0:13:17 > 0:13:20and it's a family feel and a family atmosphere

0:13:20 > 0:13:21within the business as well.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25Ethan has worked here part-time while studying at university.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28He wants to tell his story, but has asked us

0:13:28 > 0:13:30not to reveal his real name or show his face.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34I do love the job here because you get to work with

0:13:34 > 0:13:35a bit of everything, really,

0:13:35 > 0:13:37everything in the IT industry.

0:13:38 > 0:13:43One of the company's services is installing CCTV systems for customers

0:13:43 > 0:13:45and their own shops are fitted out with cameras

0:13:45 > 0:13:48to help protect staff and deter crime.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50Generally, it's shop theft, you know,

0:13:50 > 0:13:53where they sneakily take a small item,

0:13:53 > 0:13:55so CCTV is imperative for us.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00Student Ethan has never known any trouble in the Godalming shop.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03It's a quiet, easy-going place to work.

0:14:03 > 0:14:08Ethan is genuinely a very nice person. Very friendly, very helpful.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10Customers love him to bits.

0:14:10 > 0:14:14My role is not to see anyone as suspicious.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Treat everyone equally as nice, as well,

0:14:17 > 0:14:20trying and give them the best support and advice as possible.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24So, one winter's morning, Ethan has no concerns

0:14:24 > 0:14:27when this customer arrives in the shop.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30He had a hat. He wore glasses. He wore gloves.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32I offered him advice, saying, "Do you need any help?"

0:14:32 > 0:14:35He was like, "No, I'm just looking around, browsing."

0:14:35 > 0:14:39Ethan is on his own while his manager's on an early lunch break.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Another couple of customers come in.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Ethan goes to serve them.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48The first customer continues to look around for a few minutes.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51Then the couple left really nicely

0:14:51 > 0:14:53and I went back to my typical repairs

0:14:53 > 0:14:55because it wasn't that busy in the shop at the time.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58But now, the man approaches the counter

0:14:58 > 0:15:03and what Ethan can't see is the man has pulled out a hammer from his clothes.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06So, I went there, asked him, "Do you still need any help?"

0:15:06 > 0:15:09And that's when everything suddenly happened.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13The man violently brandishes the hammer.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15Ethan is terrified for his life.

0:15:17 > 0:15:18Complete shock.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21I really didn't know what to...do.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24It's just...pure fear.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27His expression and the way he was going to use a hammer,

0:15:27 > 0:15:31he was like, "Give me all your money or I'll kill you within two seconds."

0:15:31 > 0:15:33Bravely, he tries to calm the man down.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38Obviously, he wasn't listening and he got more angry.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40He banged on the table really, really hard.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43The whole counter shakes under the force of the blow.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46He actually said, "I just literally came out of prison.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49"You have two seconds before I knock your head off,"

0:15:49 > 0:15:50and I really believed it.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52Ethan opens the till.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54Because I was so shocked at the time,

0:15:54 > 0:15:55I didn't even touch the money,

0:15:55 > 0:15:58and he just took it and ran.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04He's left numb after the ordeal.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08I was staying still for a little while,

0:16:08 > 0:16:10just to kind of get in my head

0:16:10 > 0:16:13that this actually has happened.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16Ethan phones Mark to tell him about the robbery.

0:16:16 > 0:16:17It was very disturbing.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20When something like that happens to a member of your staff,

0:16:20 > 0:16:22you feel pretty bad for them, obviously.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24I said to him,

0:16:24 > 0:16:27"I'll call the police and your store manager for you straight away.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30"They will be there within two minutes and then we'll make sure that you're safe."

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Local police officers are quickly on the scene.

0:16:34 > 0:16:39Detective Constable Lawrence Burden is called in from headquarters.

0:16:39 > 0:16:43They watch back the whole robbery caught on the shop's CCTV cameras.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46It provides important clues.

0:16:46 > 0:16:51Not only you have clear facial images that can be identified,

0:16:51 > 0:16:54but also you've got cameras in the right positions

0:16:54 > 0:16:56to actually show what he did at the till.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59Lawrence is shocked by what he sees.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01I don't think any of us, let alone Ethan,

0:17:01 > 0:17:05would expect to be confronted by somebody wielding a hammer.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07Time probably stood still for him for a while

0:17:07 > 0:17:11and, although the male was stood at the till for a matter of a minute,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14it probably felt like an hour.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18Terrifying as it was, Ethan still tried to reason with the robber.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20You know, he should be commended for trying to prevent

0:17:20 > 0:17:22the male committing this crime.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24But commit it, he did,

0:17:24 > 0:17:27all for a meagre £120.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29It's clear the robber hadn't done his homework.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31There's rarely much cash in the till.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34I'd say that nine out of ten people pay by card now,

0:17:34 > 0:17:37so to come in asking for cash, it was a bit of a strange crime.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40And oddly, while the man wore gloves and a hood,

0:17:40 > 0:17:43presumably to avoid leaving evidence,

0:17:43 > 0:17:46he failed to spot the cameras right in front of his face.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48It's a strange one.

0:17:48 > 0:17:49Either he didn't see them,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51or he's just so focused on what he's doing,

0:17:51 > 0:17:54he's oblivious to what's going on around him.

0:17:55 > 0:17:59Whatever the reason, the clear images are a big help to the detectives.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02Within minutes, they send a picture of his face

0:18:02 > 0:18:04to the rest of their colleagues in the force.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07It wasn't long after that that a name was put forward

0:18:07 > 0:18:09and I was still on the scene, so that was within the hour.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13The man is 30-year-old Charles Vek.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15His last known address is in Hampshire.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18Lawrence speaks to the neighbouring force.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20He's very well-known to Hampshire Police,

0:18:20 > 0:18:24what we would refer to as a prolific and priority offender.

0:18:24 > 0:18:28Officers start a thorough search for Vek, who's disappeared.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Ethan's kept informed.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35The police said, "We're going to try our best to catch him as soon as possible

0:18:35 > 0:18:37"and, knowing he's already done crimes in the past,

0:18:37 > 0:18:42"it should be a lot easier than if the person's never done anything."

0:18:42 > 0:18:46Also, Lawrence notices that Vek appears to have an injury.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48Life on the run could be painful.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51As he leaves, you can see he's walking with a pronounced limp.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53It was just another little bit of evidence,

0:18:53 > 0:18:57something else that could tie him to the incident.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59A couple of days go by,

0:18:59 > 0:19:01then Lawrence gets the phone call he's waiting for.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03Vek's been arrested.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05Some local officers over in Hampshire

0:19:05 > 0:19:07came by him Alton train station,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10so I was really pleased cos I was starting to think,

0:19:10 > 0:19:12"When are we going to find him?"

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Back in Surrey, Vek, who's still limping,

0:19:16 > 0:19:19refuses to be interviewed, but that doesn't matter.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22Lawrence has solid evidence on camera.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24It didn't really impact on what we needed to do.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26You can have 100 witness statements

0:19:26 > 0:19:29and witnesses will always see an incident in a different light,

0:19:29 > 0:19:33but you can't argue with this good quality CCTV.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35It shows the whole incident from start to finish.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38Ethan's relieved Vek's in custody.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40I felt a lot safer.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44I'm happy the person's going to face the consequences.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Vek pleads guilty in court to the robbery in Godalming

0:19:50 > 0:19:52and two other crimes.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55He is sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00Lawrence is happy with the result.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02It feels good to know that this person is going to be

0:20:02 > 0:20:05off the streets and he's not going to have the opportunity

0:20:05 > 0:20:06to do this to anyone else.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10And Ethan has found the experience

0:20:10 > 0:20:14has changed his outlook on life for the better.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16It's only when you stare death in the face

0:20:16 > 0:20:19you reflect upon everything that you've done in your whole life,

0:20:19 > 0:20:23whether that's good or bad, and I feel like, in the end,

0:20:23 > 0:20:27I'm better as a person because I know this has happened to me.

0:20:27 > 0:20:28I'll appreciate life so much more.

0:20:33 > 0:20:38It's unlikely any of us will ever find ourselves in Ethan's situation,

0:20:38 > 0:20:39but what should someone do

0:20:39 > 0:20:42if they come face-to-face with a violent person?

0:20:42 > 0:20:45The police have some advice.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48The most important thing is your safety.

0:20:48 > 0:20:49Don't put up a fight.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52If they want to take something from you, then let them have it.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55The valuables are not important and your health is.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57Depending on the circumstances you face,

0:20:57 > 0:21:00if you're in the middle of a town or a crowd, shouting for help,

0:21:00 > 0:21:04or screaming, or using anything like a whistle, or anything like that,

0:21:04 > 0:21:07would actually put them off and they're likely to flee.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10If the offender has some distinguishable features,

0:21:10 > 0:21:14make a mental note of these. Perhaps his description, his hair colour,

0:21:14 > 0:21:17the fact that he's wearing glasses or perhaps has a tattoo,

0:21:17 > 0:21:20or a particularly unusual item of clothing.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22Then make a note of these

0:21:22 > 0:21:24because these are really good bits of evidence were the police.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27Try to work out the best escape route

0:21:27 > 0:21:29so that you can try to get out of the area as quickly as possible.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31Create that distance from that individual.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34It's perfectly acceptable, you know.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36In any situation, running away is a good option.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44When you're eating out, believe it or not, there is one thing that's worse

0:21:44 > 0:21:46than finding a fly in your soup

0:21:46 > 0:21:48and that's spotting a rat on the loose.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Sunderland in the north-east of England...

0:22:00 > 0:22:03..and the tall tale of a creature with a long tail.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06I heard him shout, "Rat!"

0:22:06 > 0:22:08They're a menace to the catering industry.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11The worst thing that can ever happen with a restaurant is

0:22:11 > 0:22:13if you get shut down for rats.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17Like a scene from the film Ratatouille, an apparently

0:22:17 > 0:22:20revolting rodent is spotted in a busy bistro.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Just absolute shock.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24But there's a twist to the tale

0:22:24 > 0:22:28involving a rat of the two-legged kind.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Over the past seven years,

0:22:37 > 0:22:41Kevin's restaurant has become a popular place to eat in Sunderland.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Every day's just busy, busy, busy. It's gone crazy.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48The following we have is absolutely tremendous.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50It all started when Kevin

0:22:50 > 0:22:52had a stroke of good fortune in a foreign land.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57He had been travelling abroad for a year and wasn't ready to go home.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00I was walking down the streets and I saw a travel agents said,

0:23:00 > 0:23:02"Fly to Borneo today",

0:23:02 > 0:23:05and I thought, "I'll go to Borneo today."

0:23:05 > 0:23:09As soon as he got off the plane in Borneo, Kevin met Remi.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11We got on great, fantastic.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13I knew then I was going to marry her. And I knew.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16I said to her, "I'm going to marry you." She said, "I know."

0:23:16 > 0:23:17I said, "I've been waiting for you."

0:23:17 > 0:23:19And after tying the knot,

0:23:19 > 0:23:23Kevin immersed himself in a new life with Remi in Borneo.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25That's where I really got my passion for food -

0:23:25 > 0:23:27the Philippines and Borneo.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Malaysian food is just the best in the world. Absolutely incredible.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34A year later, the couple returned to the UK.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36Remy's a lecturer in food hygiene and, together,

0:23:36 > 0:23:41they decided to build their own bit of Borneo in Sunderland.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44They took over a local restaurant, redecorated

0:23:44 > 0:23:48and introduced authentic dishes from their travels.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50It was a dream come true.

0:23:52 > 0:23:57But then, one Saturday, they have a visit from an unwanted dinner guest.

0:23:57 > 0:24:02What happens next is caught on the bistro's CCTV cameras.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05It was a great atmosphere. Everybody was fantastic.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08Everybody was my regular customers. We were having a laugh, as we do.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11Then Kevin spots a man who is banned from the restaurant

0:24:11 > 0:24:14because of some previous antisocial behaviour.

0:24:14 > 0:24:15One of my colleagues served him.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18She didn't know that he'd already been banned from the premises.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22The man pays for his food and drink and sits down quietly.

0:24:23 > 0:24:27But 15 minutes later, customers are startled by a very loud shriek.

0:24:27 > 0:24:31I heard him shout, "Rat!"

0:24:31 > 0:24:34He shot back to the end of the restaurant, where we could see him.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36The customers shot back with him.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38There was a lot of bad language from him.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41Hearing there's a rat in the restaurant

0:24:41 > 0:24:44is a scary moment for Kevin and his staff.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47The only way I can describe it is when you get such a bad shock

0:24:47 > 0:24:50that your whole body goes cold and shivery,

0:24:50 > 0:24:53and you feel like your whole world has just fell out.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55That's the end of everything I built over the seven years.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57I just thought, "People with their mobile phones.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00"Are they going to be putting this on social media?

0:25:00 > 0:25:01"This is going to go everywhere."

0:25:01 > 0:25:03But as Kevin goes to investigate,

0:25:03 > 0:25:07he's surprised to find his customers, far from being panicked,

0:25:07 > 0:25:10are actually being calm and supportive

0:25:10 > 0:25:12because all is not as it seems.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14A regular customer says, "Kevin, that's a pet rat.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17"That's not one from outside." And the best feeling in the world

0:25:17 > 0:25:20was all the customers that were here,

0:25:20 > 0:25:23nobody put it on the social media at all out of respect for me.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26When Kevin sees the rat for himself - phew -

0:25:26 > 0:25:29he realises it is a pet rat.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33It was black and white. It was cute. It was cleaning its whiskers,

0:25:33 > 0:25:36and there was nothing menacing about, like you would get from a grey rat.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39If you can call a rat beautiful, it was stunning.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41Stunning? Well...

0:25:41 > 0:25:43But it's clear this rat is no dirty rat.

0:25:45 > 0:25:49Meanwhile, the man who rattled everyone by shouting "rat" has left.

0:25:49 > 0:25:53The rat is put in an animal-friendly container, ready for an expert

0:25:53 > 0:25:58to see, and the restaurant settles back down as if nothing has happened.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02When pest control came around the back, I showed them the rat.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04They said, "That's a pet rat.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07"Somebody's tried to sabotage your business." That's his exact words.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11But, later on, the man who spotted the right comes back

0:26:11 > 0:26:13and asks for a refund for his meal.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Kevin smells a rat.

0:26:15 > 0:26:19Suspecting the man released the animal on purpose, he baits a trap.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22If the man did release the rat,

0:26:22 > 0:26:25by claiming money, he'd be guilty of fraud.

0:26:25 > 0:26:26I took him to where the till is,

0:26:26 > 0:26:29I gave him his money in front of the camera and then I knew I had him.

0:26:29 > 0:26:34After closing time, Kevin and his staff look back at the CCTV

0:26:34 > 0:26:36footage to see what happened.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38We were just absolutely flabbergasted.

0:26:42 > 0:26:46After he had collected his meal, the man chooses a seat next to a wall.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49Over the next ten minutes, as he eats his meal,

0:26:49 > 0:26:51the man looks down to his right-hand pocket.

0:26:53 > 0:26:58Then, when the couple next to him have left and he's not overlooked,

0:26:58 > 0:27:01the man releases the rodent...

0:27:01 > 0:27:06shrieks and tries to cause as much commotion as possible.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09But he doesn't realise

0:27:09 > 0:27:11that the camera has seen him behaving like a rat

0:27:11 > 0:27:15and now he's trapped like a rat. Kevin calls the police.

0:27:18 > 0:27:22In court, the man is sentenced to a 12-month community order,

0:27:22 > 0:27:26a rehabilitation order, and has to pay a surcharge and compensation.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33Whatever his reason for crying wolf, or rather crying rat,

0:27:33 > 0:27:36the result is certainly not what he intended.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39For something that could have been a disaster, just flipside -

0:27:39 > 0:27:41it just went the opposite way.

0:27:41 > 0:27:45The pest control company found a new home for the rat with a good Samaritan.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48The rat's got a whole new life, a better one than what it had,

0:27:48 > 0:27:49which I'm pleased about.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51When the story reached the newspapers,

0:27:51 > 0:27:54the tale of the rat spread far and wide.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57It went global, so customers start piling in from everywhere.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59They were laughing about it, they were joking.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02Asked me if ratatouille was on the menu. You know, making a lot of -

0:28:02 > 0:28:05because they know my sense of humour.

0:28:05 > 0:28:09I just felt blessed. Borneo has just been such a lucky, lucky place.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12Borneo's a lucky place, anyway, for the people who live there.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14It's a very passionate, beautiful place.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16And if you can bring some of that

0:28:16 > 0:28:19back to your homeland, it's...it's fantastic.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25That's it for today. Join us next time,

0:28:25 > 0:28:29when police and the public catch more criminals red-handed.
