0:00:56 > 0:00:59But the only hazard here is them!
0:00:59 > 0:01:02One has a shotgun and the other has an axe.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05They then shouted, "Everybody down! This is a raid!

0:01:17 > 0:01:19from right above their heads.
0:01:19 > 0:01:20Unbelievable.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23I'm not quite sure how I could've missed that.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28And a pair of vandals go ripping up flowerbeds,

0:02:14 > 0:02:16About a quarter of a million pounds' worth.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19And they're careful to leave no evidence for the police.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21To not give themselves away forensically -
0:02:21 > 0:02:23obviously meticulous planning took place.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Sian has worked here for three years.
0:03:09 > 0:03:13We all get on well together and you can come and have a laugh and

0:03:26 > 0:03:30and they're looking for a ring together - it's very interesting.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34It is a beautiful trade. There's just the one downside to it, really.
0:03:34 > 0:03:36And that downside is?
0:03:36 > 0:03:38When robbers come to call.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44Karen's been attacked by armed robbers once before,
0:03:44 > 0:03:48when she was on her own in another shop 25 years ago.
0:03:48 > 0:03:54Unfortunately, these two chaps came in and they tied me up and,
0:03:54 > 0:03:58because I refused to open the safe, they kicked me in the head.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00Um...
0:04:00 > 0:04:04which, er... obviously, was very scary.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06At one point, I did actually forget how to breathe, which is
0:04:06 > 0:04:10a bit of a strange thing to say, but, because it's something
0:04:10 > 0:04:14you do automatically, I didn't know how to start breathing again.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17Those raiders were eventually caught by police,
0:04:17 > 0:04:20but the attack had a lasting effect.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23You don't want something like that to ruin your life
0:04:23 > 0:04:26and, unfortunately, that's exactly what it was doing.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28I found I was frightened walking down the road.
0:04:28 > 0:04:30I was looking behind me all the time, I was really nervous.
0:04:30 > 0:04:35And because I lived on my own as well, it was very difficult.
0:04:35 > 0:04:37Karen eventually got her nerve back
0:04:37 > 0:04:40and she hoped nothing like it would ever happen again.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45But one summer's day, it does.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47This time, though, she's not on her own.
0:04:47 > 0:04:51What you think is going to be a normal day turns out to be
0:04:51 > 0:04:53a pretty horrifying, nasty one.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57The raid is captured by the shop's cameras.
0:04:57 > 0:05:01They record still images every few seconds.
0:05:01 > 0:05:02I'd just come into this department
0:05:02 > 0:05:04to sort out one or two little things.
0:05:04 > 0:05:08I was moving a few pieces around in the jewellery window.
0:05:08 > 0:05:12I was just having a general tidy up, cleaning.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15Out of the corner of my eye, I saw two figures running up
0:05:15 > 0:05:19the entrance area and I instantly knew what was going to happen.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22You can't quite comprehend what you're seeing.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24The door burst open violently.
0:05:24 > 0:05:29There were two chaps in full forensic white outfits.
0:05:29 > 0:05:31They shouted.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34"Everybody down, this is a raid. Everybody down on the floor!"
0:05:36 > 0:05:40One of the robbers has an axe. The other, a sawn-off shotgun.
0:05:40 > 0:05:44It was...just sheer terror.
0:05:44 > 0:05:47I think 1,001 things go through your mind.
0:05:47 > 0:05:51You realise there's only so much you can do when someone is armed.
0:05:51 > 0:05:53I just said, "OK, OK," and put my hands up.
0:05:53 > 0:05:57They went straight around the corner to the watch department.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59And come face-to-face with Karen.
0:05:59 > 0:06:04The taller man with a black bag was pulling an axe out from the bag.
0:06:04 > 0:06:06He told us to get on the floor.
0:06:06 > 0:06:07Everyone gets down.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10The men make straight for the expensive watches.
0:06:10 > 0:06:14Another member of staff walks through to see what's going on.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16Unfortunately, he had to come and lie down on the floor
0:06:16 > 0:06:19so by this stage he had four of us.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21Just off-camera, the man with the axe
0:06:21 > 0:06:23starts smashing a glass window display.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27You can imagine an axe hitting glass but the shouting as well,
0:06:27 > 0:06:31I'll never forget the sound. It was terrible.
0:06:31 > 0:06:33Having been through an armed robbery previously,
0:06:33 > 0:06:35keeping calm is the most important thing.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37You've got to be so careful
0:06:37 > 0:06:39because they may not mean to pull the trigger,
0:06:39 > 0:06:42but the height, they are so ready for this.
0:06:42 > 0:06:46Philip and Sian find themselves out of the robbers' sight.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49I dived in here to press the panic alarm.
0:06:49 > 0:06:54We then seized our opportunity to bolt up this staircase.
0:06:54 > 0:06:55I tried to lock the door.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58I don't know what I was thinking of
0:06:58 > 0:07:00or if they might run upstairs as well.
0:07:00 > 0:07:04Her hands were shaking so badly that she couldn't actually lock it.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06They run up the stairs to get to a phone.
0:07:06 > 0:07:10In the street, eyewitnesses are already calling the police
0:07:10 > 0:07:12and Sian notices something else.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15I was looking out and I could see the getaway car.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18The driver is revving the engine for a quick escape.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23Downstairs, the other staff, including Karen,
0:07:23 > 0:07:25lie on the floor, terrified.
0:07:25 > 0:07:29The robbers are in a frenzy, smashing cabinets with the axe.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33The whole area is filled with obviously aggression
0:07:33 > 0:07:36and not nice feelings and panic, really,
0:07:36 > 0:07:38because they want to get out as quickly as they can.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40Police are on their way.
0:07:40 > 0:07:42After a minute and a half in the shop,
0:07:42 > 0:07:46the men leave with a quarter of a million pounds' worth of watches.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49I picked up our umbrella vase and leant out the window
0:07:49 > 0:07:52as far as I could and I managed to launch it.
0:07:52 > 0:07:56The vase hits one of the robbers on his shoulder but it doesn't stop him.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59They dive into the getaway car and head off.
0:07:59 > 0:08:01The tyres were screeching
0:08:01 > 0:08:04and squealing as they head straight out with great speed.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07They'd gone.
0:08:09 > 0:08:13Later, the police find the getaway car dumped in a field.
0:08:13 > 0:08:16With no forensic opportunities initially in the job,
0:08:16 > 0:08:19that car became the centre of the inquiry at that point.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23It's their only lead but the car is still hiding a few secrets.
0:08:28 > 0:08:32Also coming up, this man is not running for a train.
0:08:32 > 0:08:36He's running FROM a train and being chased.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38He's a thief and risks his life to escape.
0:08:40 > 0:08:43And it's hard to believe what this driver is about to ditch
0:08:43 > 0:08:47in a leafy lane, right in front of a hidden camera.
0:08:49 > 0:08:53But first, a pair of flower disarrangers
0:08:53 > 0:08:56who try to spoil their neighbourhood.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03Late one Friday night,
0:09:03 > 0:09:08a CCTV operator notices that either the city's gardeners have had
0:09:08 > 0:09:11an off day or...oh, no,
0:09:11 > 0:09:14some vandals have been ripping up the flower beds.
0:09:17 > 0:09:20And these herbicidal maniacs don't stop
0:09:20 > 0:09:22until they have devastated the whole display.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27What's worse,
0:09:27 > 0:09:30they seem absurdly proud of their actions as they stroll off.
0:09:35 > 0:09:39But to restore our faith in human nature, along comes this man.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42Discovering the damage to the flowers,
0:09:42 > 0:09:45he provides the green shoots of recovery
0:09:45 > 0:09:48and replants them, one by one.
0:09:50 > 0:09:52What took the vandals seconds to destroy
0:09:52 > 0:09:55takes him ten minutes to carefully repair.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58Good on you, sir!
0:10:00 > 0:10:04And don't worry, this destructive duo don't get away with it.
0:10:05 > 0:10:08The CCTV operator stalks them on other cameras
0:10:08 > 0:10:12until they get into a cab and he knows the number plate.
0:10:14 > 0:10:18The two men are rooted out by the police and are convicted of
0:10:18 > 0:10:20wilful damage, and hopefully,
0:10:20 > 0:10:23that will lead them to turn over a new leaf.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32When we're out and about,
0:10:32 > 0:10:34we all try to keep an eye on our belongings
0:10:34 > 0:10:37but to avoid the attention of this next thief,
0:10:37 > 0:10:39we'd need eyes in the top of our heads.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48Central London and in the capital's major train stations,
0:10:48 > 0:10:50there's a thief about.
0:10:50 > 0:10:53This could be a normal passenger but they're not looking at him,
0:10:53 > 0:10:56they're not looking around, they're just looking at what they're doing.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58Masquerading as a commuter,
0:10:58 > 0:11:02he brazenly steals from right above his victims' heads.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05I can't believe how blatant it is.
0:11:05 > 0:11:09I'm not quite sure how I could have missed that.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11Taking wallets, purses, entire bags,
0:11:11 > 0:11:15he commits a large number of thefts in less than a month.
0:11:15 > 0:11:18Increasingly desperate, he risks his life to escape.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21A train could have killed him quite easily there.
0:11:21 > 0:11:22Using an undercover team,
0:11:22 > 0:11:26police are determined to stop this criminal in his tracks.
0:11:33 > 0:11:35There are more passengers moving through London
0:11:35 > 0:11:39than anywhere else in Britain so it's not surprising that it has
0:11:39 > 0:11:44more than its fair share of purse snatchers and bag thieves.
0:11:44 > 0:11:45To combat these crooks,
0:11:45 > 0:11:50the British Transport Police have formed the Pan London Theft Team,
0:11:50 > 0:11:53a group of undercover plain-clothes officers
0:11:53 > 0:11:56including Detective Dave Graney.
0:11:56 > 0:11:58We've got eight teams that will go out all the time
0:11:58 > 0:12:01looking for thieves on the underground system or the main lines
0:12:01 > 0:12:03so they're at our disposal and we use them
0:12:03 > 0:12:08to cover King's Cross and Paddington stations at different times.
0:12:08 > 0:12:11These teams were recently put to the test by rising
0:12:11 > 0:12:16cases of thefts from trains while waiting at London stations.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19For example, the case of Mark,
0:12:19 > 0:12:22setting off on a business trip up north.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25A train security camera shows Mark just after
0:12:25 > 0:12:28getting on board at King's Cross station.
0:12:29 > 0:12:30It was an early start on the day.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33I got the papers I needed out of my bag.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35I had my work phone because I was using that.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38I had my newspaper and then I just stuck the bag
0:12:38 > 0:12:40in the overhead luggage rack.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46I've travelled on trains for ages and never had anything nicked.
0:12:46 > 0:12:48I've never lost anything on a train.
0:12:48 > 0:12:52But that's until this man boards Mark's train.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57Mark can be seen sitting here on the left.
0:12:59 > 0:13:01The man stops next to him.
0:13:01 > 0:13:03He's spotted Mark's bag on the rack.
0:13:03 > 0:13:07From a different camera angle, the man steps into the seat behind.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10He puts his own bag next to Mark's.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14When the coast is clear,
0:13:14 > 0:13:19the thief starts to riffle through Mark's bag right above his head.
0:13:19 > 0:13:23I just didn't think anybody could take it off without me noticing.
0:13:25 > 0:13:26The thief stops riffling.
0:13:26 > 0:13:28He just takes the whole bag.
0:13:30 > 0:13:34Using his coat to conceal his stolen goods, he gets off the train.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37It's several hours later
0:13:37 > 0:13:41when Mark gets to Durham that he gets a nasty surprise.
0:13:41 > 0:13:44It was actually as I went past Durham Cathedral
0:13:44 > 0:13:46that I remembered a previous trip there.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49I'd walked up to the top of the cathedral tower with my daughter.
0:13:49 > 0:13:53So I reached for my personal phone to send her a quick text
0:13:53 > 0:13:56because I know she'd be on her way to school.
0:13:56 > 0:13:57And my bag wasn't there.
0:13:59 > 0:14:04And it's only when Mark realises the awful truth, as well as losing
0:14:04 > 0:14:08his laptop and phone, Mark's house and car keys are also in the bag.
0:14:08 > 0:14:13It was just that frustration that we were having to sort out
0:14:13 > 0:14:15a locksmith at home.
0:14:15 > 0:14:17How was I going to get from the station to home?
0:14:17 > 0:14:20The sum of all those things just really
0:14:20 > 0:14:23increased my levels of frustration for the rest of the day.
0:14:23 > 0:14:27This is the first time Mark has seen the footage of the man
0:14:27 > 0:14:28stealing his belongings.
0:14:29 > 0:14:33I can't believe how blatant it is.
0:14:33 > 0:14:35There he is putting the coat up.
0:14:35 > 0:14:38Looking round a fair amount, I guess.
0:14:38 > 0:14:41Look at that! Unbelievable.
0:14:41 > 0:14:44I guess that's him moving my bag.
0:14:44 > 0:14:48Unless I was deep in papers or...
0:14:48 > 0:14:52I'm not quite sure how I could have missed that.
0:14:52 > 0:14:55Off he goes, out of the station.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58Wow.
0:14:58 > 0:15:02He believes he has seen the last of his precious possessions.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05But it's not the last we'll see of this particular thief.
0:15:07 > 0:15:09Two days after Mark's theft,
0:15:09 > 0:15:12another and more disturbing incident is reported.
0:15:12 > 0:15:16DC Dave Graney is called in to investigate the case.
0:15:16 > 0:15:18I first became aware of the suspect
0:15:18 > 0:15:20by officers from Paddington.
0:15:20 > 0:15:23They sent me some quite grainy images of a suspect running away.
0:15:25 > 0:15:29This time, the thief's tactics are rather more extreme.
0:15:29 > 0:15:32On the four minutes on that carriage he was looking for victims.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35He found a female victim who had her handbag on the floor.
0:15:35 > 0:15:38He's pulled the handbag towards him by the strap.
0:15:38 > 0:15:41The woman catches the thief going through her bag
0:15:41 > 0:15:45and he runs off the train with her boyfriend giving chase.
0:15:47 > 0:15:53Desperate to get away, the thief runs right across the railway tracks.
0:15:53 > 0:15:58To the surprise of passers-by, he climbs up onto the opposite platform.
0:15:58 > 0:16:01He's not looked, he's gone straight across the tracks.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04A train could have killed him quite easily there.
0:16:04 > 0:16:06Thankfully, the boyfriend carried on along the platform
0:16:06 > 0:16:09and didn't decide to go across the tracks.
0:16:09 > 0:16:11He's obviously running for his life.
0:16:12 > 0:16:16The thief manages to escape with the passenger's purse and phone.
0:16:16 > 0:16:20The images are blurry but Dave thinks he might know this thief.
0:16:21 > 0:16:26I've been dealing with thieves for 14 years
0:16:26 > 0:16:28and I've dealt with this person from day one.
0:16:28 > 0:16:30I hoped it wasn't him
0:16:30 > 0:16:33because he has been on the straight and narrow for the last two years.
0:16:33 > 0:16:37If it was him, then he's quite prolific so I needed to know
0:16:37 > 0:16:38whether it was him or not.
0:16:40 > 0:16:44Dave fears the man has literally come off the rails again
0:16:44 > 0:16:45but he needs to be sure.
0:16:47 > 0:16:52And then just a couple of days later, there is yet another theft.
0:16:52 > 0:16:56Dave Graney recognises a familiar face.
0:16:56 > 0:16:58It's him.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00Putting his jacket up on the luggage rack.
0:17:01 > 0:17:06He then reaches across to rummage through his target's bag.
0:17:06 > 0:17:09Finding a wallet, he pockets it and walks off the train
0:17:09 > 0:17:11with no-one the wiser.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20More cases land on Dave's desk.
0:17:21 > 0:17:24There were four or five offences with his name written all over it
0:17:24 > 0:17:28so I checked the CCTV suites on those trains, those platforms,
0:17:28 > 0:17:30and it was him all those times.
0:17:32 > 0:17:36Amongst the CCTV evidence Dave Graney receives
0:17:36 > 0:17:40is the footage from King's Cross of the theft of Mark's laptop bag
0:17:40 > 0:17:43and it's clear, like the others, it's the thief's handiwork.
0:17:44 > 0:17:46But now they have to find him.
0:17:46 > 0:17:49With no known current address,
0:17:49 > 0:17:52Dave and the undercover theft team will have to catch him
0:17:52 > 0:17:56the next time he visits one of the busy London stations.
0:17:56 > 0:18:00Though Dave can't join the covert teams himself.
0:18:00 > 0:18:04Because I've dealt with him a number of times, he knows me quite well.
0:18:04 > 0:18:08He knows myself and my colleague and he has run from us every time.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10It's always difficult trying to catch him red-handed
0:18:10 > 0:18:13when he knows you so well.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16So they send out teams of other plain-clothes officers
0:18:16 > 0:18:19that he won't recognise to scour the platforms.
0:18:21 > 0:18:25We got a number of teams covering King's Cross station all day
0:18:25 > 0:18:27basically in shifts.
0:18:27 > 0:18:29So we had all bases covered.
0:18:29 > 0:18:32We had another team at Paddington covering all day.
0:18:32 > 0:18:37And it's at Paddington that finally the thief is spotted.
0:18:37 > 0:18:41Fortunately, the suspect was seen on the over bridge
0:18:41 > 0:18:43by one of the members of that team.
0:18:44 > 0:18:48When he saw the CCTV, he could only put his hands up,
0:18:48 > 0:18:49which is what he did.
0:18:49 > 0:18:51He admitted to all the offences.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54The man's crime spree has hit the buffers.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00He is convicted of five counts of theft
0:19:00 > 0:19:03and sentenced to 13 months' imprisonment.
0:19:08 > 0:19:12There's also a surprisingly good result for Mark in the end.
0:19:12 > 0:19:15After the thief stole his laptop and bag,
0:19:15 > 0:19:18he tried selling it on but the buyer phones Mark.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20So getting back to London from Newcastle,
0:19:20 > 0:19:23Mark had the unexpected pleasure
0:19:23 > 0:19:26of being reunited with his bag the very same day.
0:19:26 > 0:19:28I've been quite lucky about this.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31Elation to get my bag back, everything intact.
0:19:31 > 0:19:35My phone, my laptop, my work notes, my house keys.
0:19:35 > 0:19:36Yes, it was good to get it back.
0:19:40 > 0:19:44We often need to carry valuable items like laptops and phones
0:19:44 > 0:19:47so how do we keep ourselves safe from thieves?
0:19:47 > 0:19:49Put your wallet in your front pocket.
0:19:49 > 0:19:51It's so much more harder for a thief to steal
0:19:51 > 0:19:53from the front side of a body.
0:19:53 > 0:19:55A back pocket is just an easier target.
0:19:55 > 0:19:58I would always advise, if you're carrying some type of bag,
0:19:58 > 0:20:01to put the strap across your chest rather than over your shoulder.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04This way, it makes it a little bit harder for someone to remove it
0:20:04 > 0:20:06and pull it away from you.
0:20:06 > 0:20:07Carry your backpack on your front
0:20:07 > 0:20:09whilst you're in a crowded area or
0:20:09 > 0:20:12perhaps to even wear a bell on the zip so that if the offender does try
0:20:12 > 0:20:16to unzip it, you can actually hear the bell sound as they do it.
0:20:16 > 0:20:20Just think, if I did get my bag stolen today, how gutted I'd feel
0:20:20 > 0:20:24if I'd lost that photograph, that extra cash I was carrying
0:20:24 > 0:20:25that I wasn't supposed to be.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28So, just think about, "What do I need for today?"
0:20:28 > 0:20:30One thing to always watch out for is when you've got
0:20:30 > 0:20:33your driving licence and your house keys in there together,
0:20:33 > 0:20:37they've got your physical address on and if the person gets hold of your
0:20:37 > 0:20:40house keys as well, that's just inviting them to go to the house
0:20:40 > 0:20:41and potentially commit burglary.
0:20:46 > 0:20:50When this local beauty spot is blighted by fly-tippers,
0:20:50 > 0:20:53the council put in a camera to catch the blighters.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55And they see someone tipping something
0:20:55 > 0:20:57that's not exactly flyweight.
0:21:04 > 0:21:07A man is parked on a secluded country lane.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12He takes a shifty look around and then puts on some gloves.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14What is he up to?
0:21:15 > 0:21:19Whatever it is, he clearly doesn't want to be spotted.
0:21:19 > 0:21:23He's getting out something heavy from the van.
0:21:23 > 0:21:28It's a complete car engine and, yes, he's dumping it.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31And judging by the way he's struggling to move the thing,
0:21:31 > 0:21:35it's going to be a nasty job for whoever has to clear it away.
0:21:35 > 0:21:37Not that this man cares about that.
0:21:39 > 0:21:43But his plan, like his defunct engine, has totally misfired.
0:21:43 > 0:21:47He doesn't realise, but it's all been captured on camera.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50The council are running an anti-fly-tipping campaign
0:21:50 > 0:21:56and their hidden cameras are revved up and firing on all cylinders.
0:21:56 > 0:22:01In court, he's ordered to pay more than ?1,300 in fines and costs.
0:22:01 > 0:22:04Crikey! He could have bought a whole car for that!
0:22:14 > 0:22:17Now, back at the family-run jeweller's in Beverley, Yorkshire,
0:22:17 > 0:22:20there's been an armed robbery.
0:22:20 > 0:22:22One man has a sawn-off shotgun,
0:22:22 > 0:22:25while the other smashes glass cabinets with an axe to steal
0:22:25 > 0:22:29a quarter of a million pounds' worth of watches.
0:22:29 > 0:22:32The staff are left shocked and upset.
0:22:32 > 0:22:33Terrifying.
0:22:33 > 0:22:36The most terrifying thing that's ever happened to me and,
0:22:36 > 0:22:40hopefully, nothing like that will ever happen again.
0:22:40 > 0:22:43There was an awful lot of glass, obviously, shattered.
0:22:43 > 0:22:47It was like car windscreens, broken car windscreens, everywhere.
0:22:47 > 0:22:50At least everybody came out of this. Nobody was hurt.
0:22:50 > 0:22:52Let us help the police as much as we can and, most of all,
0:22:52 > 0:22:54let's get these guys.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56That is the most important thing.
0:22:56 > 0:22:59Out of everything, that is what you want.
0:22:59 > 0:23:00The police raced to the scene.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02They examined the shop for evidence.
0:23:02 > 0:23:06Detective Sergeant Mike Gotch is in charge of the investigation.
0:23:06 > 0:23:09For the victims, it was a very frightening, harrowing experience.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11It's not just about the day,
0:23:11 > 0:23:13it's a memory they have to continually live with
0:23:13 > 0:23:15and try and deal with themselves.
0:23:15 > 0:23:19Mike gets his first lead. The robbers' getaway car is discovered.
0:23:19 > 0:23:24The vehicle was located by the police helicopter on farmer's land.
0:23:24 > 0:23:27There were still two watches in the vehicle which clearly shows
0:23:27 > 0:23:31a sense of urgency for them to leave as quickly as possible.
0:23:31 > 0:23:35The robbers have switched cars and disappear in another unknown vehicle.
0:23:37 > 0:23:38The manhunt begins.
0:23:38 > 0:23:41Mike and his colleagues thoroughly search the car,
0:23:41 > 0:23:45the jewellery shop and the recorded CCTV for any evidence.
0:23:45 > 0:23:47They were very well disguised.
0:23:47 > 0:23:51They wore full forensic white paper suits, they wore large boots,
0:23:51 > 0:23:54gloves and they obviously wore ski masks covering their faces
0:23:54 > 0:23:55underneath the white hoods.
0:23:55 > 0:23:58It looks like the raid was carefully planned.
0:23:58 > 0:24:00They knew exactly where they were going.
0:24:00 > 0:24:04He headed straight for the window that he wanted to smash.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07When people do come into our shop, they always say,
0:24:07 > 0:24:09"Wow, it's like a rabbit warren."
0:24:09 > 0:24:12It's probably about four shops knocked into one.
0:24:12 > 0:24:14You'd be very reluctant to walk into that shop
0:24:14 > 0:24:17and not know what you're going to be greeted with.
0:24:17 > 0:24:19The police find no forensic evidence
0:24:19 > 0:24:22so Mike's only clue is the getaway car.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25With no forensic opportunities initially in the job,
0:24:25 > 0:24:28the car became the centre of the inquiry at that point.
0:24:28 > 0:24:32It's important that they trace the history of that car.
0:24:32 > 0:24:35We found the last known keeper of that vehicle
0:24:35 > 0:24:38and from that we established they sold the vehicle approximately
0:24:38 > 0:24:41a week before the offence took place.
0:24:41 > 0:24:44They'd had some communication via an unknown buyer
0:24:44 > 0:24:46using a mobile telephone.
0:24:46 > 0:24:49Thankfully, the previous keeper had noted the mobile phone
0:24:49 > 0:24:51number of the car buyer.
0:24:52 > 0:24:54From that, we highlighted key people which
0:24:54 > 0:24:58we suspected were involved in the robbery.
0:24:58 > 0:25:03A group of suspects are linked to the phone. Among them, these two men.
0:25:04 > 0:25:0822-year-old Kevin Smith and 19-year-old Jack O'Neill.
0:25:08 > 0:25:11One of them is already under investigation
0:25:11 > 0:25:12by a neighbouring force.
0:25:12 > 0:25:15Our key was to work with South Yorkshire to make sure
0:25:15 > 0:25:17these people were brought to justice.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20Mike doesn't have any forensic evidence to prove
0:25:20 > 0:25:22they were at the scene of the robbery,
0:25:22 > 0:25:26but there may be grounds to charge them with another serious offence.
0:25:26 > 0:25:29The offence is conspiracy to commit robbery.
0:25:29 > 0:25:31So, what we're saying is, they were involved in
0:25:31 > 0:25:32the planning of the robbery.
0:25:32 > 0:25:35Convinced the shop was scouted before the attack,
0:25:35 > 0:25:40Mike's colleagues sift through days and days of CCTV footage.
0:25:40 > 0:25:44When they go back a fortnight, they find what they're looking for.
0:25:45 > 0:25:46These are the doors that the
0:25:46 > 0:25:48offenders burst through on the day of the robbery.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51You see two males asking questions of a member of staff here.
0:25:51 > 0:25:53You can see the member of staff directs them
0:25:53 > 0:25:55round to the watch cabinet.
0:25:55 > 0:25:57They are two of Mike's prime suspects,
0:25:57 > 0:26:00Kevin Smith and Jack O'Neill.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03They've gone to the shop, they've looked at the layout of the shop
0:26:03 > 0:26:06and they've worked out where, specifically, the watches are kept.
0:26:06 > 0:26:08That's very consistent with
0:26:08 > 0:26:10the cabinets that were targeted during the robbery.
0:26:10 > 0:26:14Mike has clear evidence they planned the raid.
0:26:14 > 0:26:17From that, we got CCTV from Beverley of them going into the shop
0:26:17 > 0:26:20and looking around the market town with their vehicle outside
0:26:20 > 0:26:23the shop which was, again, a key part of the investigation.
0:26:23 > 0:26:25They are both arrested.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29One of them is also charged with conspiring to raid several
0:26:29 > 0:26:30other businesses.
0:26:30 > 0:26:33Conspiracy to rob is a serious charge
0:26:33 > 0:26:36and carries the same maximum sentence as robbery.
0:26:40 > 0:26:44Smith is jailed for a total of ten years for his part in planning
0:26:44 > 0:26:46the robbery of the jeweller's
0:26:46 > 0:26:49and other commercial premises in South Yorkshire.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52O'Neill is jailed for nine years.
0:26:55 > 0:26:58That is a really satisfying result, a lot of work by the whole team.
0:26:58 > 0:27:00Obviously, more importantly,
0:27:00 > 0:27:05justice for the victims who've been put through a horrendous ordeal.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08It was closure for the victims to get satisfaction that the
0:27:08 > 0:27:09people have been caught.
0:27:09 > 0:27:12It was a great relief to know that, finally,
0:27:12 > 0:27:15they've been put behind bars. The police did a fantastic job.
0:27:15 > 0:27:17Hats off to them. They were superb!
0:27:19 > 0:27:22Since the raid, security at the jeweller's has been strengthened
0:27:22 > 0:27:26and so has their relationship with the people of Beverley.
0:27:26 > 0:27:32We were actually swamped with messages of goodwill, with cards.
0:27:32 > 0:27:34Boxes of chocolate and cakes.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36We were just overwhelmed the next day.
0:27:36 > 0:27:39We didn't know where to put all the flowers.
0:27:39 > 0:27:41We knew where to put all the cakes, funnily enough!
0:27:41 > 0:27:44And I think that helped everybody.
0:27:44 > 0:27:46You have to move on and you have to just go,
0:27:46 > 0:27:47"Well, life is for living
0:27:47 > 0:27:50"and I can't just dwell on all the bad things.
0:27:50 > 0:27:54"Let's enjoy the good things."
0:27:57 > 0:27:58That's it for today.
0:27:58 > 0:28:00Join us next time when police and the public
0:28:00 > 0:28:02catch more criminals red-handed.
0:28:38 > 0:28:41If there is nothing new, then the Court of Appeal
0:28:41 > 0:28:43aren't going to change their decision.
0:28:46 > 0:28:47You have to question everything.
0:28:47 > 0:28:50There were two areas of fingerprints on the carrier bag.
