0:00:02 > 0:00:05Thieves will steal our cash, our cars, our valuables -
0:00:05 > 0:00:08just about anything they can get their hands on.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12But now the police are using cutting-edge technology
0:00:12 > 0:00:14to catch the bad guys.
0:00:14 > 0:00:16CCTV is gold dust.
0:00:16 > 0:00:17Great evidence for the police.
0:00:17 > 0:00:19Going to have him stopped.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Local councils, shops and businesses are fighting crime
0:00:22 > 0:00:24with their own tricks and traps.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27There's a eureka moment when you get that evidence.
0:00:27 > 0:00:30And the public are using secret cameras to make sure
0:00:30 > 0:00:33crooks get their comeuppance.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35It makes me feel so angry.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37He's paid the price. He's been dealt with.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Yes! We got her!
0:00:39 > 0:00:43So, anyone who is up to no good had better think twice -
0:00:43 > 0:00:46they might just get caught red-handed.
0:00:51 > 0:00:55Today, father of one, Ayo, thought he was moving to
0:00:55 > 0:00:58a safer neighbourhood when he left inner-city London,
0:00:58 > 0:01:01until a visitor in the night proved him wrong.
0:01:01 > 0:01:03It was a heart-stopping moment. It was like,
0:01:03 > 0:01:06"Someone is standing in my house!"
0:01:06 > 0:01:08Ayo is a computer expert,
0:01:08 > 0:01:12and hopes that his IT expertise can help him crack the case.
0:01:14 > 0:01:19Also today, Kate runs a unique cafe that's full of rescue cats.
0:01:19 > 0:01:24One day, their CCTV shows they have a cat burglar at work.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27And a cat detective, too.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30Our cats have gone through so much already.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32I felt quite devastated, actually.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36But PC Tabbycat doesn't want him to get away with it.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43But first, Natu and Su have run a local store
0:01:43 > 0:01:45for over 30 peaceful years.
0:01:45 > 0:01:50Until one day, all that changes when Natu sees Su being threatened
0:01:50 > 0:01:54with a knife and has to make a life-or-death decision.
0:01:54 > 0:01:58The knife was there on my face, and I was thinking, "Oh, my God,
0:01:58 > 0:01:59"what's going to happen?"
0:01:59 > 0:02:02Natu, despite his advanced years,
0:02:02 > 0:02:04gives the robber the surprise of his life
0:02:04 > 0:02:06with a ladder.
0:02:13 > 0:02:14In the suburbs of Wolverhampton,
0:02:14 > 0:02:18this convenience store is owned by Natu and his wife Hasumati,
0:02:18 > 0:02:20known as Su.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22They've been together since 1974.
0:02:24 > 0:02:25My sister from Leicester phoned me.
0:02:25 > 0:02:29She said, "There's a nice girl here, if you're interested."
0:02:29 > 0:02:32I said, "Yes, I'll come round and have a look."
0:02:32 > 0:02:36Natu's sister set up a meeting with Su.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39We went out, we went for a ride.
0:02:39 > 0:02:40It was so lovely.
0:02:40 > 0:02:44He was young, very, very skinny. He was very skinny at that time.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47It was good. She said, "My brother will tell me off."
0:02:47 > 0:02:50I said, "Tell your brother, don't worry, I'll marry you."
0:02:51 > 0:02:54True to his word, Natu soon married Su.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58I've been with her 42 years now.
0:02:58 > 0:02:59Yes. She is good.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02She's the one who wears trousers in the house.
0:03:04 > 0:03:09Natu and Su have raised a family and run the shop for 35 years.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11It's my livelihood and I enjoy doing it.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Natu is so kind and so bubbly.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17He's laughing all the time, joking all the time.
0:03:17 > 0:03:19He never says no to anyone.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23If a stranger comes in and says, "Oh, Natu, can I have this?"
0:03:23 > 0:03:25He'll say, "OK." He's like that.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29But then, one day, their peace is suddenly shattered
0:03:29 > 0:03:34by a man with a knife who invades the shop demanding money.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39It's a Tuesday afternoon in May.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43The shop is open as normal,
0:03:43 > 0:03:46but Natu and Su are also looking after their three-year-old
0:03:46 > 0:03:50granddaughter, and today it's Natu's turn to keep her occupied.
0:03:50 > 0:03:54I was just playing with her in the back in the living quarters.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57I was by my own in the shop.
0:03:57 > 0:03:58It was very quiet.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01But the morning turns out to be anything but quiet
0:04:01 > 0:04:04when this man enters the shop.
0:04:05 > 0:04:09He just came in and he asked for ten cigarettes.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11Su walks over to him.
0:04:11 > 0:04:13I turned back and gave him ten cigarettes
0:04:13 > 0:04:15and I said, "£3.90."
0:04:15 > 0:04:18But at that moment the man reaches inside his coat
0:04:18 > 0:04:21and suddenly Su is frozen with shock,
0:04:21 > 0:04:25as she finds herself looking at a large, sharp knife,
0:04:25 > 0:04:27pointed right at her throat.
0:04:27 > 0:04:31I was just looking at the knife, and I was so frightened.
0:04:31 > 0:04:34And he said, "Give me the money, give me the money."
0:04:34 > 0:04:37I was too scared to open till or anything.
0:04:37 > 0:04:38He was just...
0:04:38 > 0:04:43The knife was on my neck, like, he was just there.
0:04:43 > 0:04:44And I was so scared.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48Su backs away as far as she can.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51The man gets angry and starts trying to open the till himself.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56He started to bang on the till, but he couldn't open it.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Still, the knife was there, on my face, and I was thinking,
0:04:59 > 0:05:02"Oh, my God, what's going to happen?"
0:05:02 > 0:05:06And then he turned round and I just went for the buzzer straight away.
0:05:06 > 0:05:08The buzzer links through to the back room
0:05:08 > 0:05:11where Natu is looking after their granddaughter.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14He's unaware of the danger his wife is facing out front.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17When I heard the buzzer, I thought my wife wanted to know
0:05:17 > 0:05:21the price of something, or she needed assistance there, help.
0:05:21 > 0:05:23He makes his way through to see Su.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26Meanwhile, she is trying to edge away from the knifeman
0:05:26 > 0:05:29as he continues to fumble with the till.
0:05:29 > 0:05:30But he comes after her.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33And as soon as he saw me going, he just came from the front
0:05:33 > 0:05:35and he blocked me.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38Natu comes through the back door and is surprised to find himself
0:05:38 > 0:05:41face-to-face with a man brandishing a weapon.
0:05:43 > 0:05:48I saw this knife and I said, "What the hell do you want?"
0:05:48 > 0:05:51And he said, "Give me the money."
0:05:51 > 0:05:53Oh, no, what am I going to do?
0:05:53 > 0:05:56My husband said, "OK, wait a minute, I'll give you some money."
0:05:56 > 0:05:58So he presumed that I was going to get the money.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00But when he goes into the back room,
0:06:00 > 0:06:04Natu makes a brave but foolhardy decision.
0:06:04 > 0:06:06He decides to take on the knifeman.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09In a panic I just saw that stepladder. I said,
0:06:09 > 0:06:12"That's nice. That'll keep the distance between me and him."
0:06:12 > 0:06:14I grabbed the ladder.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16The knifeman is in for a shock.
0:06:18 > 0:06:23I went and said, "Here you are!" and just ran at him.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26He was afraid of it as much as I was afraid of him.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28The man flees empty-handed,
0:06:28 > 0:06:32with Natu chasing him out into the street.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35I was shouting at him, I said, "Stop! Come here, you!"
0:06:35 > 0:06:37And he didn't look back, he just kept on running.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40I went outside as well to see what is going on.
0:06:40 > 0:06:44And I saw him, he said, "He's gone, he's gone."
0:06:44 > 0:06:47And I said to her, I said, "Are you all right?"
0:06:47 > 0:06:48She said, "Yeah, I'm OK."
0:06:48 > 0:06:52Then he said, "Give me the car keys, give me the car keys."
0:06:52 > 0:06:56I said, "If you're all right, then I will go and look for him."
0:06:56 > 0:07:00I was telling him, "No, don't go, just leave him alone, let him go."
0:07:00 > 0:07:03He said, "No, no, I'm going to get him."
0:07:03 > 0:07:05Natu drives off in the hope there's still
0:07:05 > 0:07:08a chance of spotting the knifeman.
0:07:08 > 0:07:12He's only walking, he has got no bike or no other transport.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15And minutes later, Natu sees the man walking down the road.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18He starts to follow him in his car.
0:07:18 > 0:07:20I thought he might recognise me.
0:07:20 > 0:07:22If he recognised me, then the game is over.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24But he wasn't looking back.
0:07:24 > 0:07:28I phoned the police and I told the police what happened,
0:07:28 > 0:07:30and I said, "I'm following him now."
0:07:30 > 0:07:34They said, "Keep your distance, don't approach him."
0:07:34 > 0:07:36The police tell him they're on their way,
0:07:36 > 0:07:40and Natu continues to track the would-be robber.
0:07:40 > 0:07:44After several minutes, the man arrives at a bus stop.
0:07:44 > 0:07:48The police said, "Just sit in the car and somebody will be there."
0:07:48 > 0:07:52Natu waits to hear a police siren, but with a potentially dangerous
0:07:52 > 0:07:56armed robber on the loose the police go for a covert tactic,
0:07:56 > 0:07:59and officers approach in an unmarked car.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02All of a sudden a maroon Astra pulls up,
0:08:02 > 0:08:04and it was just ordinary couple come out.
0:08:04 > 0:08:06I thought they must be catching the bus,
0:08:06 > 0:08:07but instead they were arresting him.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12They were going through his pockets, all his belongings.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15I said to myself, "Oh, that's a good result,
0:08:15 > 0:08:17"that they've got him in custody.
0:08:17 > 0:08:19"He might have harmed somebody else."
0:08:19 > 0:08:23The man's been apprehended, but Natu and Su are still worried that
0:08:23 > 0:08:27if the suspect pleads not guilty, they will have to testify in court.
0:08:27 > 0:08:31Then after a month the police said that he has pleaded guilty,
0:08:31 > 0:08:33so I don't have to go to court now.
0:08:37 > 0:08:41The man was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.
0:08:43 > 0:08:46For his part in resisting and apprehending the robber,
0:08:46 > 0:08:50Natu received a letter from High Sheriff of the West Midlands,
0:08:50 > 0:08:54and will be given an award for bravery at a special ceremony.
0:08:55 > 0:08:58But Natu believes Su was the brave one.
0:08:58 > 0:09:00My wife had the courage
0:09:00 > 0:09:03to stand there, and she is looking at him in his eyes
0:09:03 > 0:09:06and he has got a knife in his hand.
0:09:06 > 0:09:11And she did a very, very courageous thing to press the buzzer.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15Su hasn't let the experience put her off working in the shop.
0:09:15 > 0:09:19Many customers were saying, "Oh, Su, what have you done?
0:09:19 > 0:09:20"What have you done?"
0:09:20 > 0:09:22I said, "I haven't done anything, I was so scared."
0:09:22 > 0:09:25"I bet you won't stand in the shop now."
0:09:25 > 0:09:29I said, "No, I have to, because I like to stand in the shop and work in my shop."
0:09:29 > 0:09:33But 35 years after opening their store,
0:09:33 > 0:09:36the couple are now getting ready for a big change.
0:09:36 > 0:09:37I'm going to retire next year.
0:09:39 > 0:09:40Relax...
0:09:40 > 0:09:43Some holidays, look after grandsons and daughters
0:09:43 > 0:09:45when they come to my house.
0:09:45 > 0:09:49I was just a small house, not a very big house.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52I want just a two-bedroom house. Nice, cosy.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55I'm looking forward to retirement with her.
0:09:55 > 0:09:57That's what I'm looking forward to.
0:10:07 > 0:10:13And now, a homeowner in South London gets a rather nasty surprise.
0:10:13 > 0:10:17As part of a wildlife project, their garden has had a camera
0:10:17 > 0:10:20installed to film the comings and goings of a family of foxes.
0:10:20 > 0:10:25The camera's clever technology means it is triggered by any movement,
0:10:25 > 0:10:28and so it captures some wonderful moments -
0:10:28 > 0:10:31a mum feeding her cub,
0:10:31 > 0:10:37and a local moggy that gets the fright of its life from a fox cub...
0:10:37 > 0:10:39before making a hasty exit.
0:10:42 > 0:10:46And this other cub that's outfoxed by a pigeon.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48He's left spitting feathers,
0:10:48 > 0:10:51but so are the homeowners when the cameras night-vision reveals
0:10:51 > 0:10:55they've had a visit from a different type of cunning fox.
0:10:57 > 0:11:01This dodgy-looking man has crept into their garden
0:11:01 > 0:11:03and is clearly up to no good.
0:11:03 > 0:11:06He tries to break into their shed before helpfully revealing
0:11:06 > 0:11:08his face to the camera.
0:11:09 > 0:11:12After he's finished trying to burgle this household,
0:11:12 > 0:11:15he moves on to steal from a neighbour's home.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17But he accidentally leaves his scarf behind.
0:11:19 > 0:11:23It doesn't take the Met long to identify him from this video,
0:11:23 > 0:11:26arrest him, and then match his DNA to that on the scarf left
0:11:26 > 0:11:28at the scene of the crime.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31Because it's the third time he's been convicted,
0:11:31 > 0:11:34the burglar is sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40So now the fox cam, after its brief brush with crime,
0:11:40 > 0:11:45can go back to filming Mr and Mrs Brush and their cute family.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47Awww.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55Look down any street and you'll see an increasing number
0:11:55 > 0:11:57of homes with security cameras.
0:11:57 > 0:12:01And often, those houses will have cameras inside as well as out.
0:12:03 > 0:12:06This camera captures a burglar as he sneaks into
0:12:06 > 0:12:09a house while a family sleeps upstairs.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11What if he took my daughter?
0:12:11 > 0:12:12Things like that do happen.
0:12:12 > 0:12:16And this homeowner decides to use the power of technology
0:12:16 > 0:12:18to track the thief down.
0:12:24 > 0:12:28The market town of Romford is on the outskirts of east London.
0:12:28 > 0:12:31Ayo moved here with his partner and young daughter
0:12:31 > 0:12:32two years ago.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37He was raised in a tough area of inner-city London,
0:12:37 > 0:12:39but it didn't stop him doing well at school.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45After successfully forging a career in IT,
0:12:45 > 0:12:49he was hoping life would be safer in Romford.
0:12:49 > 0:12:52I was brought up in Hackney, east London,
0:12:52 > 0:12:54AKA the concrete jungle.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57So I was... I mean, I'm quite streetwise.
0:12:57 > 0:13:01Now I live in Romford. It's slightly more quiet, I'd say.
0:13:01 > 0:13:03It's pretty nice area to live in.
0:13:03 > 0:13:06But one thing I did discover afterwards...
0:13:06 > 0:13:09I started actually researching burglaries in this area.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13Ayo found his new postcode came high up on the list of
0:13:13 > 0:13:16burglary hot spots in the UK.
0:13:16 > 0:13:19Which was something I didn't know before I moved here.
0:13:19 > 0:13:23Out here there's a lot more space, so people have got drives.
0:13:23 > 0:13:25So, you see an expensive car in the drive,
0:13:25 > 0:13:27you know the keys are in that house.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30And it wasn't just his car that Ayo was worried about -
0:13:30 > 0:13:33he has a lot of expensive equipment at home.
0:13:33 > 0:13:34I'm a computer programmer,
0:13:34 > 0:13:37what I've always wanted to do as a child, kind of thing.
0:13:37 > 0:13:39So I'm living the dream, I guess.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42But all the problems I have in life, I always turn to technology.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44I always turn to technology.
0:13:44 > 0:13:49So Ayo decided to use technology to help protect his technology.
0:13:49 > 0:13:51As well as getting an alarm installed,
0:13:51 > 0:13:54he invested in some security cameras.
0:13:54 > 0:13:58My friend started a company, I just kind of wanted to support him,
0:13:58 > 0:14:00and I had bought that new car at the time, and I thought,
0:14:00 > 0:14:04"I might go get the CCTV," not thinking anything would happen.
0:14:04 > 0:14:05But something does happen,
0:14:05 > 0:14:10and Ayo's security equipment turns out to be a wise investment.
0:14:15 > 0:14:17It's a Friday night in February.
0:14:17 > 0:14:19Ayo is at home with his partner
0:14:19 > 0:14:21while their young daughter sleeps upstairs.
0:14:23 > 0:14:25I went to bed like I usually do.
0:14:25 > 0:14:27I rarely used to put the alarm on at night.
0:14:27 > 0:14:31The couple's pet pug, Hugo, is in the kitchen downstairs.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34He was really young, he was in a cage,
0:14:34 > 0:14:37so he doesn't mess up the whole kitchen over the night.
0:14:37 > 0:14:39The family sleeps soundly that night.
0:14:39 > 0:14:42They don't hear a peep from young Hugo.
0:14:43 > 0:14:47But in the morning, they find the front door slightly ajar.
0:14:47 > 0:14:49My girlfriend said, "You've left the door open."
0:14:49 > 0:14:51I just thought, "Maybe I did leave it open,"
0:14:51 > 0:14:53because it didn't look like it had been broken,
0:14:53 > 0:14:55so I just closed the door.
0:14:55 > 0:14:59Ayo is intending to go to the gym, but he can't find his kitbag.
0:14:59 > 0:15:00And that's not all.
0:15:00 > 0:15:03I then went looking for my phone and I couldn't find my phone anywhere.
0:15:03 > 0:15:05And even then, the penny still hadn't fully dropped
0:15:05 > 0:15:07cos I just didn't believe it.
0:15:07 > 0:15:10But then I thought, "OK, let me just check the CCTV."
0:15:10 > 0:15:15He looks at the overnight recording and he's stunned by what he sees.
0:15:15 > 0:15:18I was shocked, I think that was the main thing.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21I was shocked just to see someone standing there.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23It's just gone 3am.
0:15:25 > 0:15:29A man in a hoodie walks up the driveway past Ayo's new car.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31He has something in his hand...
0:15:32 > 0:15:34..and forces the front door open.
0:15:36 > 0:15:38Seconds later, he's inside.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45It literally was... a heart-stopping moment.
0:15:45 > 0:15:46It was like...
0:15:46 > 0:15:49"Someone is standing in my house!"
0:15:49 > 0:15:52The intruder starts rummaging through the coats in the hall.
0:15:52 > 0:15:54He was looking for the car keys
0:15:54 > 0:15:57because he wanted to steal the car that was outside.
0:15:57 > 0:16:01Unaware there's a camera, the man has let his hood slip back,
0:16:01 > 0:16:02showing his face.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07He finds a bag and carries it outside.
0:16:09 > 0:16:10I'm guessing he wanted to check,
0:16:10 > 0:16:12maybe the keys potentially could be in there.
0:16:12 > 0:16:14But the keys aren't in the bag,
0:16:14 > 0:16:17so the intruder comes back for a further search.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19He came in again and he looked quite angry, actually.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22He looked quite kind of like, "Ugh, where are these keys?"
0:16:22 > 0:16:27But then things take a more sinister turn as the man creeps upstairs,
0:16:27 > 0:16:30where Ayo and his family are fast asleep.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33Which definitely did put a different spin on it,
0:16:33 > 0:16:36because it made me much more angry about the whole situation.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39What if he just took my daughter?
0:16:39 > 0:16:42Which is possible, you know, things...
0:16:42 > 0:16:44..things like that do happen.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47After a few minutes, the intruder creeps back downstairs.
0:16:47 > 0:16:52He still hasn't found the car key and searches the coats again.
0:16:52 > 0:16:55He decides to take Ayo's jacket away with him.
0:16:56 > 0:16:59I had my phone in there, I had headphones -
0:16:59 > 0:17:00probably quite heavy.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03Again, I thought he thought maybe the keys could be in there.
0:17:03 > 0:17:06The man finally leaves the house.
0:17:06 > 0:17:09He doesn't find the keys and doesn't steal the car,
0:17:09 > 0:17:10but he's taken Ayo's jacket,
0:17:10 > 0:17:14phone and a bag containing a valuable laptop and other equipment.
0:17:17 > 0:17:22Ayo calls the police, who take away a copy of the CCTV recording
0:17:22 > 0:17:24to start their investigation.
0:17:25 > 0:17:29Meanwhile, he decides to do some detective work of his own.
0:17:29 > 0:17:32I'm the kind of person that, if I feel I've been wronged,
0:17:32 > 0:17:37I'll take it all the way to the Supreme Court if I have to,
0:17:37 > 0:17:39and I think, in this particular situation,
0:17:39 > 0:17:42I had a little bit of an advantage in terms of, he took my phone,
0:17:42 > 0:17:44so that gave me a bit of a clue, I had some CCTV,
0:17:44 > 0:17:47so I knew that there was something that I could do.
0:17:47 > 0:17:50Ayo's phone has a feature that sends out messages,
0:17:50 > 0:17:54showing its whereabouts if it's been lost or stolen.
0:17:54 > 0:17:56I went to my mum's house
0:17:56 > 0:17:58and I just used my brother's computer to check my e-mail,
0:17:58 > 0:18:01and I saw this "your phone has been found here" kind of thing.
0:18:01 > 0:18:03So as soon as I saw that I was like,
0:18:03 > 0:18:05"Yes, right, I've got something to go on!"
0:18:05 > 0:18:07The phone has sent a message,
0:18:07 > 0:18:11alerting Ayo that it's somewhere in an estate near his home.
0:18:11 > 0:18:13He gives the information to the police,
0:18:13 > 0:18:16but can't resist going to have a look around himself.
0:18:18 > 0:18:20I just thought, well, the least I could do is try to see
0:18:20 > 0:18:23if I could provide some more information for the police
0:18:23 > 0:18:26trying to catch him, and potentially I might bump into him myself.
0:18:26 > 0:18:29Thanks to his CCTV cameras,
0:18:29 > 0:18:32Ayo has a good idea what the man looks like.
0:18:32 > 0:18:35I could work out his height, roughly, from where the door was,
0:18:35 > 0:18:37so I kind of like worked out his height -
0:18:37 > 0:18:39roughly he's a little bit taller than me.
0:18:39 > 0:18:41But as you can see he has a very distinctive hairline,
0:18:41 > 0:18:43he's going bald.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46Every time I was walking around, I was looking at people's hair
0:18:46 > 0:18:49to see if they've got a balding patch at the front,
0:18:49 > 0:18:50and then I looked at their trainers.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54Ayo can't find the burglar, but when he shows
0:18:54 > 0:19:00a local woman his CCTV footage, she recognises the man.
0:19:00 > 0:19:03She said to me, he's got a garage, and she's always seeing
0:19:03 > 0:19:05these new cars going in and out of this garage.
0:19:05 > 0:19:08So she took me to where this garage was.
0:19:08 > 0:19:09She was a bit reluctant,
0:19:09 > 0:19:11but in the end I kind of just talked her into it.
0:19:11 > 0:19:13There's no-one at the garage,
0:19:13 > 0:19:16but Ayo takes photographs of the area and notes the locations
0:19:16 > 0:19:22of nearby CCTV cameras, in case they can provide any video evidence.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24And then I went back home,
0:19:24 > 0:19:26and I basically wrote a report to the police
0:19:26 > 0:19:27saying I've discovered this now,
0:19:27 > 0:19:30I've been down there, I've had a look. I gave all this to the police.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33It's not long before there's some good news.
0:19:33 > 0:19:36I got an e-mail from the police saying that someone got arrested.
0:19:36 > 0:19:38Which was great, I was really, really happy about that.
0:19:38 > 0:19:40Good. Gotcha!
0:19:41 > 0:19:43So he initially denied it,
0:19:43 > 0:19:46but a bit further along he admitted it before, obviously,
0:19:46 > 0:19:47he was going to get convicted.
0:19:47 > 0:19:48And convicted he was.
0:19:50 > 0:19:53The man was sent to prison for two years and four months
0:19:53 > 0:19:55for the burglary of Ayo's home.
0:19:57 > 0:20:01I was absolutely fantastically happy about it.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04I could sleep at night knowing that person is not actually
0:20:04 > 0:20:09going to do it tonight because he is in prison, so that was good.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12Ayo's stolen equipment was not recovered.
0:20:12 > 0:20:15But at least, being an experienced computer techie,
0:20:15 > 0:20:19he had made sure he had backups of everything that was on it.
0:20:19 > 0:20:21He's also improved his security at home.
0:20:21 > 0:20:24I make sure every single night my alarm is on,
0:20:24 > 0:20:26my door is double locked.
0:20:26 > 0:20:31Ayo also hopes Hugo proves to be a slightly more effective
0:20:31 > 0:20:33guard dog in future.
0:20:33 > 0:20:37Now he probably would bark, but the fact that he didn't react,
0:20:37 > 0:20:41you know, you can't really blame him, he was only a youngster.
0:20:41 > 0:20:42He's only learning his trade.
0:20:42 > 0:20:44Let's go, then, boss.
0:20:49 > 0:20:53Thankfully, it's rare for a burglar to break into a house
0:20:53 > 0:20:55when people are at home.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57But there are still some straightforward things we can do
0:20:57 > 0:21:00to reduce the chance of it happening to us.
0:21:00 > 0:21:03One of the easiest things you can do is to make sure you've got
0:21:03 > 0:21:08the right doors and window locks, that they're well manufactured,
0:21:08 > 0:21:10that they actually do the job that they intend to.
0:21:10 > 0:21:13Don't leave your valuables near to the front door,
0:21:13 > 0:21:15perhaps a handbag, car keys, you name it -
0:21:15 > 0:21:18all of this is an attraction for a wannabe burglar.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21They can even use things like coat hangers or fishing rods
0:21:21 > 0:21:24to put through your letterbox and just hook your keys.
0:21:24 > 0:21:28We've had experience of criminals using six-foot rods to be able
0:21:28 > 0:21:30to reach in and steal property.
0:21:30 > 0:21:33This can be as far as a kitchen, perhaps on the stairway.
0:21:33 > 0:21:36If you're away, have a neighbour, a friend,
0:21:36 > 0:21:38a family member come in, turn some lights on,
0:21:38 > 0:21:41invest in a light timer to do it automatically for you,
0:21:41 > 0:21:43have a friend park their car in the drive.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45Just make it look as though there's someone in all the time
0:21:45 > 0:21:47and they'll move on.
0:21:52 > 0:21:56Now, a thief enters a rescue centre for cats
0:21:56 > 0:21:58and steals their collected funds.
0:21:58 > 0:22:00He thinks he's got away with it,
0:22:00 > 0:22:04but Daisy, the clever cat, is set to surprise this crook.
0:22:04 > 0:22:06She knows everything on that reception desk,
0:22:06 > 0:22:09and she can see it there in the back.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11It's like she runs off to go and get someone.
0:22:16 > 0:22:18In the centre of Nottingham,
0:22:18 > 0:22:21there's an unusual business on high street.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23In Kate's special cafe,
0:22:23 > 0:22:25the customers are surrounded by cats.
0:22:26 > 0:22:28I think cats just steal my heart a little bit.
0:22:28 > 0:22:30They can have that air of independence,
0:22:30 > 0:22:32but they need and love you, really.
0:22:34 > 0:22:36We basically just fit in around the cats.
0:22:36 > 0:22:38That's generally how it works.
0:22:38 > 0:22:41The place was built with the trees, with the cats in mind,
0:22:41 > 0:22:44and we even have our own cat VIP area, which is the cat snug,
0:22:44 > 0:22:47which customers don't have access to.
0:22:47 > 0:22:50That means they can get away and chill out if they wish.
0:22:50 > 0:22:51Stolen my chair!
0:22:52 > 0:22:56The range of people that come here is actually quite amazing.
0:22:56 > 0:22:57We have, you know,
0:22:57 > 0:23:02from young children to absolute crazy cat ladies, just like me.
0:23:02 > 0:23:03We've come all the way from Leicester.
0:23:03 > 0:23:05My name's Cat, I have a cat top,
0:23:05 > 0:23:08I'm petting a cat in a cat cafe.
0:23:08 > 0:23:09We are dedicated to our cats.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14It's very difficult for them not to put a smile on your face,
0:23:14 > 0:23:16especially if you've had a bad day and some smelly old tabby
0:23:16 > 0:23:18comes and parks his bottom on you.
0:23:18 > 0:23:20It usually brightens up my day, anyway.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24But the cafe has a serious purpose.
0:23:24 > 0:23:28Many of these are rescue cats, and the aim of Kate's business
0:23:28 > 0:23:32is to take them in, rehabilitate them, and then re-home them.
0:23:32 > 0:23:35There you go. You look beautiful.
0:23:35 > 0:23:37So, to pay towards the cats' welfare,
0:23:37 > 0:23:42customers regularly fill the donation box on the cafe's counter.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45It contributes to their day-to-day upkeep,
0:23:45 > 0:23:49it goes towards all the veterinary care that they might require.
0:23:49 > 0:23:52We get cats that come to us in some shocking states,
0:23:52 > 0:23:53really, really bad states.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56One of those cats was Daisy.
0:23:56 > 0:23:59She embodies Kitty Cafe. She was an abandoned kitten.
0:23:59 > 0:24:01She was in a bad way when we got her.
0:24:01 > 0:24:03We wasn't sure that her and her sister were going to survive.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06Me and my husband looked after them personally in our home.
0:24:06 > 0:24:09Her and her sister pulled through, and ever since then,
0:24:09 > 0:24:12she has just been in charge and ruled the roost.
0:24:12 > 0:24:16Daisy is one of the most well-known cats in the cafe
0:24:16 > 0:24:19as she spends most of her time sitting on the reception desk,
0:24:19 > 0:24:23which proves useful the day a crook targets the cafe,
0:24:23 > 0:24:25and Daisy plays cat and mouse with him.
0:24:29 > 0:24:32It's a Tuesday afternoon, just gone three.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36The receptionist is busy packing display items
0:24:36 > 0:24:40when this man approaches the desk.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42We do get a lot of customers that come in,
0:24:42 > 0:24:45intrigued about who we are and what we do.
0:24:45 > 0:24:48This gentleman came in, and he was asking questions
0:24:48 > 0:24:51about the cafe in the same sort of way.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54But the man is just pussyfooting around,
0:24:54 > 0:24:56hiding his true purpose.
0:24:56 > 0:24:59He wants to get his paws on a box at reception
0:24:59 > 0:25:02containing donations from the public.
0:25:02 > 0:25:04As soon as the receptionist goes to get something
0:25:04 > 0:25:08from under the counter, he pounces.
0:25:08 > 0:25:12Unseen by everybody, he puts it in his bag,
0:25:12 > 0:25:14but he hasn't counted on cats' eyes.
0:25:16 > 0:25:19Daisy senses something is going on
0:25:19 > 0:25:22and approaches the bag to look inside.
0:25:22 > 0:25:26The man attempts to shoo her away, but she won't budge.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30Then Daisy tries jumping into it.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33But can't get through the gap.
0:25:33 > 0:25:37As far as Daisy's concerned, this cat's out of the bag.
0:25:37 > 0:25:42But the thief nonchalantly carries on his conversation
0:25:42 > 0:25:45before getting away with the donation box.
0:25:47 > 0:25:48CATastrophe.
0:25:52 > 0:25:56Kate doesn't discover the box is missing until the end of the day.
0:25:56 > 0:26:00We checked the CCTV and we saw this incident unfold
0:26:00 > 0:26:01in front of our eyes.
0:26:01 > 0:26:05There was around £60 in the box the thief stole.
0:26:05 > 0:26:07I felt quite devastated, actually,
0:26:07 > 0:26:12because it's so obvious what we do and what the money is for.
0:26:12 > 0:26:15Our cats, they have gone through so much already,
0:26:15 > 0:26:20and that somebody wanted to take away from that was very upsetting.
0:26:20 > 0:26:24But Kate is pleased that Daisy helped to slow the thief down
0:26:24 > 0:26:27and create some memorable CCTV footage.
0:26:27 > 0:26:29She knows everything on that reception desk,
0:26:29 > 0:26:32and she can see it there in the bag.
0:26:32 > 0:26:36And it's like she runs off to go and get someone to come and help.
0:26:36 > 0:26:38I was very proud of Daisy.
0:26:38 > 0:26:41She did get some extra treats that night.
0:26:41 > 0:26:43The police come to take away the recording
0:26:43 > 0:26:46to start their investigation.
0:26:46 > 0:26:50And Kate does what she can to get her claws into this cat burglar,
0:26:50 > 0:26:53by posting the video on the internet.
0:26:53 > 0:26:57We have such a strong following on social media,
0:26:57 > 0:27:00and Daisy has almost, like, her own fan club.
0:27:00 > 0:27:04Once I got it on there, it sort of just flew.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07People in the Nottingham area are outraged
0:27:07 > 0:27:10and shared Daisy's video thousands of times.
0:27:10 > 0:27:14And a week later, the combination of all this publicity
0:27:14 > 0:27:16together with the police work
0:27:16 > 0:27:20means the thief hasn't a cat in hell's chance.
0:27:20 > 0:27:24He was being arrested in town for another offence,
0:27:24 > 0:27:27and a couple of our regulars who had the video
0:27:27 > 0:27:29went onto Facebook, marched over to the police,
0:27:29 > 0:27:33show them the video of little Daisy trying to get the donation box,
0:27:33 > 0:27:35and he was arrested there and then
0:27:35 > 0:27:37for the theft of the donation box, too.
0:27:37 > 0:27:40A PURRfect result.
0:27:43 > 0:27:48In court, the thief pleaded guilty to the theft from the cafe
0:27:48 > 0:27:50and was sentenced to nine weeks' imprisonment,
0:27:50 > 0:27:52suspended for 12 months.
0:27:52 > 0:27:56He was also ordered to pay Kate £60 compensation.
0:28:00 > 0:28:03All the attention Kate's cafe received after the incident
0:28:03 > 0:28:06caused extra donations to flood in.
0:28:06 > 0:28:10The only difference now is that the box is stuck to the counter.
0:28:11 > 0:28:14It means that if they were to try and slide it,
0:28:14 > 0:28:18not only would it not go anywhere but we'd hear it ripping, so...
0:28:18 > 0:28:20Any problems on reception today?
0:28:20 > 0:28:23And of course, any crooks will have to get past the cats' eyes
0:28:23 > 0:28:27of a very cool cat called Daisy.
0:28:30 > 0:28:33That's it for today, and that's it for a few more criminals
0:28:33 > 0:28:36who've been caught red-handed.
