0:00:43 > 0:00:46They might just get Caught Red Handed.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53Today...

0:00:53 > 0:00:56This burglar is stealing a whole shop full of mobile phones

0:00:56 > 0:00:58that are being repaired.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01The shop owner's customers have lost not just their phones,

0:01:01 > 0:01:04but precious photos and personal details.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06What I'm going to say to my customers,

0:01:06 > 0:01:10I have no words to describe how I was feeling on that time.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13But the burglar makes an extraordinary mistake.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15He returns to the scene of the crime

0:01:15 > 0:01:18as if he's a normal customer, thinking he won't be recognised.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19Bad move.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Also coming up...

0:01:23 > 0:01:26There's a sinister visitor lurking in the school hall,

0:01:26 > 0:01:29and when he takes a computer hard drive

0:01:29 > 0:01:33it spells disaster for Laura's dance pupils taking their GCSEs.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Really, really angry.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39That was hours and hours of precious work that's been taken away.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43And it gets personal for Nigel,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45the school site manager, too.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48The head and the governors trusted me to do the security of the school.

0:01:48 > 0:01:49I failed.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58But first, an intruder is sneaking around a restaurant in the dark,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01long after the paying customers have left.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03He thinks he's out of sight.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07But up in the ceiling a hi-tech pair of eyes means the restaurant's

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Chinese owner, John, can see everything.

0:02:12 > 0:02:17- TRANSLATION:- The thief was there just when I watched the CCTV,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20so I was really excited.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22And things get even more exciting

0:02:22 > 0:02:24when John and the police reach the restaurant.

0:02:24 > 0:02:29- TRANSLATION:- The door was slowly opened and the thief came out.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31I was trying to grab him.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34I shouted, "He's here," to catch the police's attention.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48The town of Middlesbrough in the north-east has become home to John

0:02:48 > 0:02:50since he came to Britain from China.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56As a child growing up in a small Chinese town,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59John learnt that survival meant hard graft.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02A lesson which served him well when he opened a restaurant here.

0:03:04 > 0:03:09- TRANSLATION:- I have believed in hard work from a very young age,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13and I want to work hard to make my fortune.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18This restaurant is very important to me because it's my living

0:03:18 > 0:03:20and supports my whole family.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25He steadily built up his restaurant's trade over five years.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29- TRANSLATION:- I haven't yet fulfilled my dream,

0:03:29 > 0:03:31but the business is growing

0:03:31 > 0:03:33and I hope it can be better and better.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38But recently the profitability of his business was threatened

0:03:38 > 0:03:40after the restaurant was burgled twice.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44So John decided to invest in expensive security cameras

0:03:44 > 0:03:47which send live video pictures directly to his phone.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- TRANSLATION:- I would check CCTV every night and every morning

0:03:52 > 0:03:55to see whether a thief had got in.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Checking CCTV became a habit.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01And John's habit of regularly checking his cameras

0:04:01 > 0:04:05proves to be useful when he's hit by yet another burglary.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13It's 2am, and after clearing up and locking up John has gone home.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Before going to bed he always has a nightly look at the restaurant's

0:04:18 > 0:04:20live video pictures.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24And tonight he gets a shock -

0:04:24 > 0:04:26he sees an intruder.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28- TRANSLATION:- A person was moving.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31My first reaction was to call the police.

0:04:31 > 0:04:32As well as phoning the police,

0:04:32 > 0:04:35John heads to the restaurant himself.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38There's a chance the thief could still be inside.

0:04:38 > 0:04:42- TRANSLATION:- I felt so annoyed that I wanted to fight him.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47Street cameras show that the police have responded so quickly

0:04:47 > 0:04:49they are already at the restaurant.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51These two officers are checking the front,

0:04:51 > 0:04:54while two others have left their car to check the back of the building,

0:04:54 > 0:04:56out of camera shot.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00John arrives near the back door, impressed by their speedy response.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02- TRANSLATION:- I was relieved.

0:05:02 > 0:05:03In the best English he can muster,

0:05:03 > 0:05:05John explains what happened.

0:05:05 > 0:05:11- TRANSLATION:- I stood with the police and described what I saw on the CCTV to them.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15He's now lost the required signal to receive the live video pictures,

0:05:15 > 0:05:18so he can't be sure the intruder's still inside.

0:05:20 > 0:05:21But he is.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26And the hooded man hasn't yet realised he's got company outside.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31John tells the officers where he thinks the man broke in.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34- TRANSLATION:- I told them that last time the thief broke in through

0:05:34 > 0:05:35the back door.

0:05:35 > 0:05:41So the police went to the back door while I waited at a side door.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45With John stationed by the side door, all exits are covered.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48When an officer at the front of the building shines his torch inside,

0:05:48 > 0:05:52the intruder suddenly becomes aware that he's not alone.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58He begins crawling on the floor to keep out of sight

0:05:58 > 0:06:00and heads for an escape route.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03He chooses the side door of the building -

0:06:03 > 0:06:05the same door that John is standing right next to.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10- TRANSLATION:- I was standing at the door and I saw the door

0:06:10 > 0:06:14was slowly opened and the thief came out.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18I asked him in English, "What are you doing here?"

0:06:18 > 0:06:21He threw away the bag he carried with him.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25The man walks towards John and then makes a run for it.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28- TRANSLATION:- I was trying to grab him

0:06:28 > 0:06:31but only grabbed a corner of his coat and he broke free.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36In that moment I had no thought except catching him.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38I shouted, "He's here,"

0:06:38 > 0:06:39to catch the police's attention.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43The man bolts across the road with John,

0:06:43 > 0:06:46officers and a police dog in close pursuit.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48- TRANSLATION:- I thought about chasing him,

0:06:48 > 0:06:53but seeing the police were running much faster than me I just stopped.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55I was just hoping the thief could be caught.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59The burglar tries to shake off his pursuers

0:06:59 > 0:07:02by ducking between residential blocks of flats.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05But there is only one other way out from this area...

0:07:06 > 0:07:09..and a police car is on its way to intercept him.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12CCTV shows how the man appears in the street,

0:07:12 > 0:07:15trying to avoid suspicion by looking casual.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20But the officers aren't easily fooled and call him over.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Out of options, he gives himself up.

0:07:26 > 0:07:31The police dog arrives, which makes sure the man won't run off again.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33John is told the good news.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38- TRANSLATION:- I was happy to hear that the thief had been caught.

0:07:38 > 0:07:39Very pleased.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Sergeant Tom Legg picks up the case at the police station.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47He interviews the arrested man.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50He initially denied the offence.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52I showed him the CCTV that we had from the council

0:07:52 > 0:07:53from the exterior of the building.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55He again denied it,

0:07:55 > 0:07:57saying he'd want to go on an ID parade.

0:07:57 > 0:08:02The street's CCTV is too distant to give a solid identification,

0:08:02 > 0:08:06so Tom begins to analyse the pictures from John's hi-tech system.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10He discovers there's plenty of footage.

0:08:10 > 0:08:11He spends almost two hours in there.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14It's really brazen, really, that he's not rushed.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16In his mind he believes it's closed,

0:08:16 > 0:08:19the likelihood is that no-one's coming back there till the following morning.

0:08:19 > 0:08:20He's not aware that, really,

0:08:20 > 0:08:22everything that he's doing is being watched.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26Tom can see that the intruder's clothes match those of the man

0:08:26 > 0:08:27he has in custody.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30The likelihood of finding someone wearing that exact combination

0:08:30 > 0:08:34of clothing at that exact time is really unlikely.

0:08:34 > 0:08:35And at one point in the recording,

0:08:35 > 0:08:39the man makes a mistake that is to seal his fate.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41You get to see the offender's face.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44It's pretty clear from watching that, when you see the offender,

0:08:44 > 0:08:47that they're one and the same, that that's the same person.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49With the weight of evidence against him,

0:08:49 > 0:08:52the next morning in front of magistrates

0:08:52 > 0:08:54the arrested man pleads guilty.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01In court he was given a community order and a three-month curfew.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Thanks to John's smart security equipment

0:09:06 > 0:09:08the man was caught and dealt with quickly.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Tom's pleased with the outcome for the restaurant owner.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14He's a young man trying to build a business for his family.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17For someone to just think that they can go in and burgle,

0:09:17 > 0:09:19that's absolutely morally wrong.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22John still checks his cameras' live video at the end of each day,

0:09:22 > 0:09:24and thankfully since the burglary

0:09:24 > 0:09:27they've shown nothing to worry about.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32- TRANSLATION:- After his conviction no more robbery happened

0:09:32 > 0:09:35to my restaurant, so I feel much relief.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39Hopefully this will never happen again.

0:09:51 > 0:09:52It's Christmas time.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55But criminals don't take a holiday.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59Even on Christmas Day, this thief isn't showing goodwill to all men.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03After smashing his way into this cafe,

0:10:03 > 0:10:05he steals two collection boxes.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07One for people with drink and drug problems,

0:10:07 > 0:10:10the other for a charity for blind people.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15Hang on, has he left his crowbar behind as evidence?

0:10:16 > 0:10:18Oh, no, he's realised.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19What a pity.

0:10:20 > 0:10:21Not surprisingly,

0:10:21 > 0:10:24the cafe owners are furious at having to come out early

0:10:24 > 0:10:27on Christmas morning to clear up the mess.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31And they are even angrier about the less than charitable thefts.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33So they put the footage on the internet

0:10:33 > 0:10:36and later receive a very welcome Christmas gift

0:10:36 > 0:10:39when someone recognises the thief.

0:10:39 > 0:10:40When the police arrest him,

0:10:40 > 0:10:45he pleads guilty to burglary and is sentenced to 18 months in prison.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47So, in just 20 seconds

0:10:47 > 0:10:52this crook manages to give himself an unhappy New Year and a half.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Merry Christmas.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04It's easy to assume that if you leave your property, say your car,

0:11:04 > 0:11:07your laptop or your mobile phone, in a repair shop,

0:11:07 > 0:11:09it's going to be safe and sound.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11But that's not always the case.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16When a thief steals all the customers mobile phones

0:11:16 > 0:11:17from a repair shop,

0:11:17 > 0:11:19the owner is left in despair...

0:11:20 > 0:11:24..until he opens the shop the very next day,

0:11:24 > 0:11:27and he can't believe what happens.

0:11:27 > 0:11:28The guy came in, the same guy.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40Monmouth town centre has many shops of all types,

0:11:40 > 0:11:44but local entrepreneur Waqar noticed a gap in the market -

0:11:44 > 0:11:46mobile phone repairs.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48So he opened a shop.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50It's an idea he'd first had years earlier

0:11:50 > 0:11:54while studying business management at university.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56The teacher said you can make a business plan,

0:11:56 > 0:11:59and phones is the need of every person nowadays.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01So that idea came into my mind.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04I start learning how to repair the phones,

0:12:04 > 0:12:07I start gathering the ideas for everything.

0:12:07 > 0:12:12When he left uni, Waqar decided to turn theory into practice.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16He leased a shop, redecorated it, and opened for business.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18But it wasn't an instant success.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20It took nearly eight to nine months

0:12:20 > 0:12:23and it was very hard time for us.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26Gradually, over a period of two years,

0:12:26 > 0:12:29Waqar began to build up a lot of customers,

0:12:29 > 0:12:33all of them trusting him with their expensive phones and personal data.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36Each phone costs £600 to £700 nowadays.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38It's all like brand-new phones, you know?

0:12:38 > 0:12:43On busy weekends Waqar could receive dozens of phones to fix,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46with customers looking forward to picking their repaired devices up

0:12:46 > 0:12:48the following week.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50But then, one particular weekend,

0:12:50 > 0:12:52a local thief decided that he wanted

0:12:52 > 0:12:55to pick up all the phones for himself.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02It's 7am on a Monday morning

0:13:02 > 0:13:04and Waqar is walking to work with a friend.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07He notices the police are parked near his shop.

0:13:08 > 0:13:09I saw the police car,

0:13:09 > 0:13:11and I just start feeling a little bit,

0:13:11 > 0:13:13maybe it's something to do with me.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16But I say, "Oh, maybe not," you know?"

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Waqar has a CCTV camera inside the shop,

0:13:20 > 0:13:23and it shows him arriving that morning and finding a broken window

0:13:23 > 0:13:27by the entrance, with shards of glass on the floor.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30It was completely shattered, so I just realised, "Oh, my God."

0:13:30 > 0:13:33The police officer, he came from the car and he say,

0:13:33 > 0:13:35"I'm really sorry but you've had a break-in.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38"Have you got anything important in the shop?"

0:13:38 > 0:13:40I say, "Everything is important in the shop."

0:13:40 > 0:13:44Waqar, his friend, and the police officer enter the shop.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46I just start looking for my customers' devices

0:13:46 > 0:13:47and they all were missing,

0:13:47 > 0:13:50and that was the terrible time that I just realised,

0:13:50 > 0:13:52"Oh, my God, I've lost all of them."

0:13:54 > 0:13:56What am I going to say to my customers?

0:13:56 > 0:13:58I can offer them a phone,

0:13:58 > 0:14:00but what am I going to say if they ask me,

0:14:00 > 0:14:03"No, we don't need the phone, we have some personal stuff,

0:14:03 > 0:14:06"we have some important things we keep in our phones."

0:14:08 > 0:14:11The only hope he has is that the phones might be recovered

0:14:11 > 0:14:13if the burglar's caught quickly.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17I just realised, "OK, I've got CCTV."

0:14:17 > 0:14:19Waqar checks the weekend's camera recording

0:14:19 > 0:14:21to see if he can spot any clues.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25Unfortunately, the camera's night-time vision

0:14:25 > 0:14:28isn't working properly, so it's hard to see what's going on.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31But Waqar still meticulously examines the recording.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37After a while, he see's a shadowy figure walk up to the front door

0:14:37 > 0:14:40in the early hours and peer in.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43The man then turns round and kicks hard at the window.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Then he tries breaking the window again.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53The noise of the glass smashing echoes around the street

0:14:53 > 0:14:55and the man runs off.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59Seeing the burglar attack his shop is stressful for Waqar.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01It's hard, yeah, that someone is breaking into your property

0:15:01 > 0:15:05and you're watching that, you know? It was terrible.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10Several minutes later, the man runs back and climbs through the hole.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14He's wearing a hood and it's impossible to see his face.

0:15:15 > 0:15:20He's starting looking for anything that's expensive.

0:15:20 > 0:15:21The man goes to the back of the shop

0:15:21 > 0:15:24and puts the customers' phones into his bags.

0:15:26 > 0:15:27After 20 minutes,

0:15:27 > 0:15:30the burglar emerges and leaves with two bags

0:15:30 > 0:15:32bulging with expensive devices.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36But he's not finished yet.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38He returns to collect more loot,

0:15:38 > 0:15:43including Waqar's whole cash register from the back of the shop.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45It looks like he's going to get away with the crime,

0:15:45 > 0:15:49but as Waqar watches on, there's an unexpected bonus.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54At one stage, the thief peers into a glass display,

0:15:54 > 0:15:57and it's an illuminating moment in more ways than one.

0:15:57 > 0:16:02The thief's face is clearly visible in the reflected torchlight.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06The reflection came back to his face and you can see the face very clear.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10That's the moment that I got him and I say, "Maybe I know him."

0:16:10 > 0:16:14That's the moment when I realised he might be my customer.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16The man's face rings a bell,

0:16:16 > 0:16:19and Waqar asks his friend to come over and look at the recording

0:16:19 > 0:16:22to see if he recognises the thief.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24And then something truly remarkable happens.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27While they're watching the camera footage,

0:16:27 > 0:16:30the shop door opens and someone walks in,

0:16:30 > 0:16:33looking exactly like the man on the video they're watching.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36The guy came in, the same guy.

0:16:36 > 0:16:41Waqar's convinced it's the burglar returning to the scene of his crime.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44He speaks to his friend in Pashto, his first language,

0:16:44 > 0:16:47because he doesn't want the man to know his suspicions.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50I just took advantage of my language, and he said,

0:16:50 > 0:16:53"Yes, I think so. He's the same guy."

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Waqar's shocked by what the man says next.

0:16:56 > 0:17:01He asked for his phone that he left on Saturday for repairing.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04He said, "OK, where is my phone?"

0:17:04 > 0:17:07While Waqar calmly explains about the break-in,

0:17:07 > 0:17:09his friend secretly takes a photo of the man.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13He gets rude and says, "It's not my problem."

0:17:13 > 0:17:16I say, "Look, I promise that I will give your property back to you,

0:17:16 > 0:17:19"but you have to allow me some time."

0:17:19 > 0:17:20After asking for compensation,

0:17:20 > 0:17:25the man changes tack and says he has friends who are burglars who may have the phones.

0:17:25 > 0:17:30He tells Waqar he could ask for them back in return for £100.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33Waqar plays along.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36"OK, get me my stuff back

0:17:36 > 0:17:39"and I can pay you £100 for that.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42"But first, you need to bring the stuff back

0:17:42 > 0:17:44"and then I will give you the cash."

0:17:44 > 0:17:45The man leaves.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49Waqar calls the police and shows them the CCTV

0:17:49 > 0:17:50and his friend's photo.

0:17:51 > 0:17:56I showed the picture to prove that that guy just came into the shop

0:17:56 > 0:17:58and he just left the shop now.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01When they checked the picture, they said, "Yes, we know that person."

0:18:01 > 0:18:05I just said, "Can you get me my customers' stuff?"

0:18:05 > 0:18:07That's the first thing.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10The police track the man down and arrest him.

0:18:11 > 0:18:12They recover some equipment,

0:18:12 > 0:18:15but Waqar's customers' phones have all gone.

0:18:17 > 0:18:18It's bad news for Waqar,

0:18:18 > 0:18:22but at least the burglar is put behind bars.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27In court, the man pleaded guilty

0:18:27 > 0:18:30and was sentenced to 20 months in prison.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36Waqar vowed to his customers that he'd replace the phones

0:18:36 > 0:18:38that were stolen,

0:18:38 > 0:18:41and within days, they all had replacements.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45I've got a good relationship with my supplier, that's the best part.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47They lent me the stock.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51Waqar is in the process of reimbursing his suppliers.

0:18:51 > 0:18:52Slowly but surely,

0:18:52 > 0:18:54he's repairing his finances.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58And he needs to, because he's saving up for his wedding day.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00I'm trying my best,

0:19:00 > 0:19:03and definitely next year I'll get married. Yeah.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13The amount of personal information on our smartphones these days is scary.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16And because they're small and regularly on display,

0:19:16 > 0:19:18phones are easily stolen.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21So, what can we do to reduce our chances of that happening

0:19:21 > 0:19:25and what precautions should we take just in case it does?

0:19:25 > 0:19:28Your phone has cost you hundreds of pounds.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Think about that in terms of notes.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Would you leave £500 sticking out of your back pocket

0:19:32 > 0:19:34while you walked down the street?

0:19:34 > 0:19:36Leaving your mobile phone, for example,

0:19:36 > 0:19:39next to you, or on a table on a train,

0:19:39 > 0:19:42really is just an open invitation for an offender

0:19:42 > 0:19:46to potentially distract you and steal the phone.

0:19:46 > 0:19:47If your phone is stolen,

0:19:47 > 0:19:51then it's really important that you've got it Pin-protected.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54What we don't want is the criminal to steal your phone

0:19:54 > 0:19:55and then have open access to everything

0:19:55 > 0:19:57that you have on your phone.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00In the good old days when photographs were in albums,

0:20:00 > 0:20:01people used to say in a fire

0:20:01 > 0:20:04that's the one thing they would always want to rescue.

0:20:04 > 0:20:05So in the current climate,

0:20:05 > 0:20:08that is your phone, so back it up.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11Each mobile phone has a unique reference number,

0:20:11 > 0:20:13which is called an IMEI number.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16It's really important that you make a record of your individual number.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20Some phones and some devices have a find my phone capability.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24This can be vital for the police in identifying

0:20:24 > 0:20:27where the stolen phone has been taken to.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30It can be useful simply for the victim.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33It might be that you've lost the phone rather than it being stolen,

0:20:33 > 0:20:35so try and make sure that this is activated.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43Stranger danger -

0:20:43 > 0:20:46a criminal strolls around a school,

0:20:46 > 0:20:49helping himself to anything he can lay his hands on.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51When I first heard about the break-in,

0:20:51 > 0:20:53I felt a bit uneasy because I thought

0:20:53 > 0:20:55that's someone in our private space,

0:20:55 > 0:20:57and space they shouldn't be in.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Leigh Park is a large suburb of the town of Havant.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11The area is served by Park Community School,

0:21:11 > 0:21:13and Christopher Anders has been headteacher here

0:21:13 > 0:21:15for the last eight years.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20Leigh Park was built by the city of Portsmouth to house people who lived

0:21:20 > 0:21:23in Portsmouth and whose houses had been bombed

0:21:23 > 0:21:26or needed to be demolished after the war.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30It became the second-largest area of social housing in Europe

0:21:30 > 0:21:34and, obviously, with an area like that comes some challenges.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36It's a great opportunity for you...

0:21:36 > 0:21:39The school had fallen into disrepair,

0:21:39 > 0:21:43but from 2014 it was completely rebuilt and modernised,

0:21:43 > 0:21:44with a vision for the future.

0:21:44 > 0:21:49We wanted the school to be the main building in Leigh Park

0:21:49 > 0:21:50because education is important,

0:21:50 > 0:21:55but also because of the community facilities that we can offer.

0:21:57 > 0:21:58As part of the renovations,

0:21:58 > 0:22:02a new theatre and activity studio were built.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06Both are vital for Laura, who teaches dance at the school.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08It's a really, really fun job.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11I love working with the kids.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14To see students going from can't do anything at all in the classroom

0:22:14 > 0:22:15to performing on stage.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17It's just great seeing students learn

0:22:17 > 0:22:20and really progressing and moving forward.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25But Laura faces a serious setback,

0:22:25 > 0:22:29with years of her work lost and her pupils badly affected,

0:22:29 > 0:22:31when an intruder enters the school.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39It's a Wednesday during the Easter holidays.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41Although it's not a normal school day,

0:22:41 > 0:22:44a few teachers have come in to do some work.

0:22:46 > 0:22:47Just past midday,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50one of the school security cameras by the main entrance picks up

0:22:50 > 0:22:54what looks like a member of staff adjusting his bicycle.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57But this man doesn't work here.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00He's actually stealing the lights from someone's bike.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05After removing both front and back lights,

0:23:05 > 0:23:08he rummages around in the cycle bag

0:23:08 > 0:23:10to see if there's anything else worth taking.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16Then, worryingly, he heads into the school.

0:23:20 > 0:23:2430 seconds later, cameras show him sneaking around the activity studio.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27He approaches the computer in the room

0:23:27 > 0:23:29to see if he can remove it easily.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34He can't, it's secured,

0:23:34 > 0:23:37so he starts searching the surrounding rooms.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41Three minutes later, the intruder is still skulking around.

0:23:41 > 0:23:45For a reason that will become apparent, he's put on another top.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49He's found a computer drive, which he puts in his bag.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55The man then leaves the way he came in.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01Nigel is the school's facilities manager,

0:24:01 > 0:24:04responsible for health and safety, and security.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06He's on-site when it's discovered

0:24:06 > 0:24:09that a thief has been in their midst.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11One of my colleagues realised his bike lights had been stolen,

0:24:11 > 0:24:15came straight back into say, "Someone's tampered with my bike."

0:24:15 > 0:24:18So we reviewed the footage of where his bike was kept.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21They see the thief near the bikes,

0:24:21 > 0:24:25and Nigel watches as the man strolls around the activity studio.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29He'd now put a coat on,

0:24:29 > 0:24:31so we're assuming that the coat was in the rucksack,

0:24:31 > 0:24:33so he's put his jacket back on to give the space in the rucksack

0:24:33 > 0:24:35for what he wanted to put into his rucksack.

0:24:35 > 0:24:41You can see there, he clearly has some computer equipment with him.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44The drive the thief has stolen belongs to Laura.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46Which happened to be my dance hard drive,

0:24:46 > 0:24:48which had a lot of information,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51a lot of practical work that's kind of irreplaceable.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54It had lots and lots of students' work on from over the years,

0:24:54 > 0:24:58lots of work on there that showed students this is a top piece.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03That was hours and hours of precious work that's been taken away.

0:25:04 > 0:25:08Really, really angry and frustrated and upset that that had gone.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Two of Laura's pupils, Tanisha and Faith,

0:25:12 > 0:25:15also feel distraught when they hear what's happened.

0:25:15 > 0:25:19Obviously everyone in the class was devastated because that had

0:25:19 > 0:25:22all the GCSE footage on there

0:25:22 > 0:25:25that we needed to watch to be able to see

0:25:25 > 0:25:28what they would like us to perform.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30When I first heard about the break-in,

0:25:30 > 0:25:32I felt a bit uneasy because I thought,

0:25:32 > 0:25:36that's someone in our private space and space they shouldn't be in.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Nigel is particularly angered by the thefts.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42It felt personal to me because it's my job.

0:25:42 > 0:25:46The head and the governors trusted me to do the security of the school.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48I failed.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51So, for me, at that point, it does become very much,

0:25:51 > 0:25:53"OK, we are going to get you,

0:25:53 > 0:25:56"we're going to find as much footage as we can."

0:25:56 > 0:25:59Though Nigel's concerned the man's not been caught,

0:25:59 > 0:26:00he takes comfort that at least

0:26:00 > 0:26:03the state-of-the-art cameras they recently installed

0:26:03 > 0:26:05are proving their worth.

0:26:05 > 0:26:09The CCTV system we have allows us to take a very nice, clear visual of him.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11Once we hand this over to the police,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14it's quite clear that someone will recognise him

0:26:14 > 0:26:16somewhere at some point.

0:26:17 > 0:26:22The thief's image is shared around all of the police stations in Hampshire.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25Soon after, officers spot a man acting suspiciously

0:26:25 > 0:26:26at a train station.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31They asked him to open up his rucksack and, as far as I'm aware,

0:26:31 > 0:26:36in his rucksack was equipment, some chisels, some hammers etc.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38They then arrested him,

0:26:38 > 0:26:41took him to the nearest police station they could take him,

0:26:41 > 0:26:42which is Portsmouth.

0:26:42 > 0:26:43When he got into Portsmouth,

0:26:43 > 0:26:46it was then recognised that he was the one who had been wanted

0:26:46 > 0:26:49for two counts at this school.

0:26:49 > 0:26:51So, for us it was very pleasing.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55The man had already received a suspended sentence

0:26:55 > 0:26:57for theft and burglary in the past,

0:26:57 > 0:27:00so the authorities took a rather dim view of his stealing

0:27:00 > 0:27:03from a school while he was out on licence.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09In court, after pleading guilty to burglary,

0:27:09 > 0:27:12the man was sentenced to 25 months in prison.

0:27:17 > 0:27:21The thief's capture and detention is a relief for all at the school.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24The grounds have been made safer by employing two security guards

0:27:24 > 0:27:27to patrol the site out of hours,

0:27:27 > 0:27:30and automatic timer locks and alarms

0:27:30 > 0:27:33have been added to many of the doors.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35I feel better now and safer now.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37I think, as a school, we've really come together

0:27:37 > 0:27:40to make sure that we have those security operations in place.

0:27:40 > 0:27:44Despite the loss of her dancing video demonstrations,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47Laura is determined that the show must go on

0:27:47 > 0:27:50for pupils like Tanisha and Faith.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52The school helped get other videos

0:27:52 > 0:27:55so we could see all the dances on there,

0:27:55 > 0:27:56and it did really help us.

0:27:56 > 0:27:59So we had them.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02Everyone here is so lovely and kind and caring

0:28:02 > 0:28:04and the teachers are just amazing.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07They always encourage you to do your best

0:28:07 > 0:28:09and I'm really glad that I go to this school.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12Continue the line, bring the arms back.

0:28:17 > 0:28:18That's all we have time for today.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20An increasing number of criminals

0:28:20 > 0:28:23are being captured on camera every year.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25Join us next time to see more villains

0:28:25 > 0:28:27who've been Caught Red Handed.
