0:00:03 > 0:00:06Thieves will steal our cash, our cars, our valuables.

0:00:06 > 0:00:10Just about anything they can get their hands on.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13But now the police are using cutting-edge technology

0:00:13 > 0:00:14to catch bad guys.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17CCTV is gold dust.

0:00:17 > 0:00:18Great evidence for the police.

0:00:18 > 0:00:20Got to have him stopped.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Local councils, shops and businesses

0:00:22 > 0:00:26are fighting crime with their own tricks and traps.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28There's a eureka moment when you get that evidence.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32And the public are using secret cameras to make sure crooks

0:00:32 > 0:00:34get their comeuppance.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36It makes me feel so angry.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38He's paid the price, he's being dealt with.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Yes, we've got her!

0:00:40 > 0:00:44So anyone who's up to no good had better think twice.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47They might just get Caught Red Handed.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56Today - while Sam is out at work in her car,

0:00:56 > 0:00:59her 14-year-old daughter is home alone.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04But, to her horror, she isn't alone for long.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07She'd seen the man standing there, inches away from her face.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09That far away from each other.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Sam gets a text from her terrified daughter

0:01:11 > 0:01:14that there are men in the house, and races back.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17I'm wondering if they've hurt her, done something,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20everything goes through your head, doesn't it?

0:01:20 > 0:01:25Also today - 76-year-old Norman's family depended on two people

0:01:25 > 0:01:28they trusted to look after him.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31But instead they stole his savings.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33It's like a stab in the back.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35You know, you feel like you've been groomed.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39And a quiet Northumberland village

0:01:39 > 0:01:42is suddenly the scene of a major crime -

0:01:42 > 0:01:45an armed gang strikes in the middle of the night,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48and the locals get a rude awakening.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51I heard the police helicopter, it was really, really low

0:01:51 > 0:01:54and then light lit up the whole bedroom.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Definitely didn't have any idea

0:01:56 > 0:01:58that it was going to be something like this.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Impington is a quiet country village on the outskirts of Cambridge.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18Local resident Sam, who works as a delivery driver,

0:02:18 > 0:02:20has lived in the village longer than most.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23She's very much at home here.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25It's quite nice to live in Impington, actually.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30It's a quiet area. We've lived in this house since I was...

0:02:30 > 0:02:31eight or nine.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Sam took over the house from her parents

0:02:33 > 0:02:37and now lives here with daughter Paige, who's 14 years old.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Paige has a hearing disability.

0:02:39 > 0:02:44She's had hearing problems from birth and she's had an operation

0:02:44 > 0:02:48and it didn't work, so in the end they gave her hearing aids.

0:02:48 > 0:02:49Come this way, look. What's this?

0:02:49 > 0:02:52They share the house with three Chihuahuas.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54They're not the best guard dogs

0:02:54 > 0:02:56so, as the house is surrounded by fields,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Sam decided to invest in some home security.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05The reason that I got CCTV is because I'm on the end

0:03:05 > 0:03:07and, you know, you just don't know.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10So it's better to be safe than sorry, really.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12And, one Thursday in late spring,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15it turns out getting the cameras was a wise move.

0:03:19 > 0:03:20First thing in the morning,

0:03:20 > 0:03:23when Sam's about is set off on her delivery round,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Paige tells her she's feeling too poorly to go to school.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29She wasn't feeling very well so I said to her,

0:03:29 > 0:03:33"Well, you can stay at home and I'll call in on my way past

0:03:33 > 0:03:35"to make sure you're OK."

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Sam has to go to work to make an urgent delivery

0:03:38 > 0:03:40before she'll be able to get back to the house.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43I said, "I'll come and see you soon." And she said,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46"Fine, I'm going to go to sleep." So she took her hearing aids out.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Paige doesn't want to talk on camera,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51but she's told us the shocking sequence of events

0:03:51 > 0:03:53that happens next.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57After her mum leaves, Paige goes back to bed and falls asleep.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04But her sleep is about to be disturbed in a terrifying manner.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07The CCTV shows how, unknown to Paige,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10two men run into the driveway,

0:04:10 > 0:04:12one of them carrying a crowbar.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17The first thing Paige knows about the men

0:04:17 > 0:04:19is when, in a moment of pure horror,

0:04:19 > 0:04:22she wakes up to see a shadow moving in her doorway.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28She's seen the man standing there, inches away from her face.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30That far away from each other.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Paige is scared stiff, she literally can't move.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36I guess she didn't know what he was going to do,

0:04:36 > 0:04:38whether he was going to harm her, you know,

0:04:38 > 0:04:40he could've done anything to her.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43The man is startled to find someone home.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47He's as shocked as she is and he runs.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51But, without her hearing aids, Paige doesn't know where they have gone.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53She thinks they're still downstairs.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57She manages to text her mum.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59"Mum, there's people in the house, you need to come home."

0:04:59 > 0:05:02So with that, I'm getting here as fast as I can,

0:05:02 > 0:05:05constantly ringing her and then she's not answering.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08And then obviously that's making me panic more.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12I'm wondering if, you know, they've hurt her, done something,

0:05:12 > 0:05:15just everything goes through your head, doesn't it?

0:05:15 > 0:05:18On the way home, Sam calls her partner, Jamie,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20who gets to the house first.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24He checks to see if Paige is OK and makes sure the intruders have gone.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31Moments later, Sam arrives and rushes to her daughter's side.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33I find her in floods of tears

0:05:33 > 0:05:37and Jamie was there, making sure she was OK.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41Sam looks around to see if anything's been taken.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43I came through from the living room to the kitchen,

0:05:43 > 0:05:46and noticed that they'd prised the kitchen window open.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48And I've got a glass jar of rice

0:05:48 > 0:05:52which has obviously gone everywhere and glass everywhere.

0:05:52 > 0:05:57Then I went upstairs and went into my room where I see my drawers

0:05:57 > 0:06:00and my wardrobe that have been messed about with.

0:06:00 > 0:06:06Surprisingly, Sam finds nothing's been stolen but she's badly shaken.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08It's just degrading, isn't it, knowing that someone

0:06:08 > 0:06:11has been in your house and gone through your private stuff.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13It's horrible.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Sam phones the police

0:06:16 > 0:06:19and PC Chris Daniel responds immediately.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22We got in the car and we went straight there as quick as we can.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26I was part of an impact team and we focus quite heavily on burglaries.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30When Chris arrives, he finds Paige is inconsolable.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33She was clearly upset and shocked by what had happened,

0:06:33 > 0:06:35and it was obviously very distressing for her,

0:06:35 > 0:06:38particularly in that she hadn't seen exactly who it was in the house.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40She just knew it wasn't her parents.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Sam tells Chris about the security cameras.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47When we find out there's CCTV, obviously for us, that is fantastic.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50It can give us some real good leads at an early stage.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55Chris views the CCTV recording and notices something suspicious

0:06:55 > 0:06:57half an hour before the break-in.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01First time I see it, I'm just like...gobsmacked.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04A silver car slows down near the house.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Then a woman enters the driveway.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13I think she's there solely to see if anybody's home,

0:07:13 > 0:07:16to see what the set-up of the house is.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21My daughter, being deaf, wouldn't have heard the knock on the door

0:07:21 > 0:07:24so, yeah, she obviously thought it was all clear.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28The woman goes round the back of the house...then she leaves.

0:07:32 > 0:07:3630 minutes later, the silver car returns and the two men jump out.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40She dropped them off,

0:07:40 > 0:07:43now they're coming in and they're going round the back of the house.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46They first head for a caravan in Sam's back garden.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48I don't know why they've gone into the caravan,

0:07:48 > 0:07:50there's nothing in there.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52The burglars spend several minutes looking for valuables,

0:07:52 > 0:07:54but there's nothing there.

0:07:54 > 0:07:55Then they turn their attention

0:07:55 > 0:07:58to the rest of what they believe is an empty house.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01The man in the bottom of the screen there appears to be acting

0:08:01 > 0:08:05as some sort of lookout whilst the other male is entering

0:08:05 > 0:08:06via the kitchen window.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14A few minutes later, the cameras pick them up running away.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20Chris and a colleague decide to focus on the silver car -

0:08:20 > 0:08:23it could be the key to tracking down the culprits.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26We worked out after a bit of googling that potentially

0:08:26 > 0:08:29it was a Vauxhall Signum. It was at this point that we remembered

0:08:29 > 0:08:32that there was a call earlier on in the day.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34That morning, one of Sam's neighbours spotted a man

0:08:34 > 0:08:37drinking alcohol at the wheel of a car.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39It was a silver Vauxhall Signum.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44The witness noted the car's numberplate and phoned the police.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47It could be Chris's lucky day.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49There was nothing to be lost by us checking this out,

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Vauxhall Signums are not a rare car but you don't see them everywhere.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56Chris sets off for the address where the vehicle's registered

0:08:56 > 0:08:59and has another extraordinary piece of luck.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03When he's close to the house, the silver car drives straight past him.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05He flags the driver down.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Once it was stopped, a female driver got out.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10We've seen immediately that she's wearing the clothes

0:09:10 > 0:09:13exactly matching that of the female seen in the CCTV footage.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Chris arrests the woman.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20He then drives to her house where, as soon as he walks in,

0:09:20 > 0:09:24he finds a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to one of the burglars.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28Chris promptly arrests him, too.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32He has found two of the three suspects within hours of the crime.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36I think luck was definitely on our side. We've searched the premises

0:09:36 > 0:09:40and we found a jacket matching that seen on the CCTV.

0:09:40 > 0:09:41He seizes the man's shoes

0:09:41 > 0:09:44and they match footprints found at Sam's house.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47This obviously puts him inside the house and it's very difficult

0:09:47 > 0:09:49for him to argue why his shoe print was in the kitchen.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52The other man was spotted by officers in Cambridge

0:09:52 > 0:09:57three days later. The police solved the entire case in 72 hours.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01They were bang on it, they were helpful and got them, basically.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03So, yeah, they were... They were great.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09In Crown Court, the woman and her partner admitted to the burglary.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12She was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment,

0:10:12 > 0:10:14suspended for 18 months.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19Her partner was sent to prison for a year and eight months.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23Their accomplice pleaded not guilty but the jury disagreed,

0:10:23 > 0:10:27and he was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Break-ins like this are rare,

0:10:32 > 0:10:35and Sam's security cameras certainly paid dividends.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38But, for her, the most important thing about that day

0:10:38 > 0:10:42was that she came home to find Paige safe.

0:10:42 > 0:10:47To see that she was obviously not OK but not harmed but, yeah,

0:10:47 > 0:10:50it was such a relief to see that she was all right.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01Fortunately, criminals are often not the brightest of the bunch...

0:11:01 > 0:11:06and get caught because they make a slip up, sometimes quite literally.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Ouch!

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Here's three who take the phrase "impact of crime"

0:11:10 > 0:11:12to a whole new level.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19This man's trying to steal a bike...

0:11:19 > 0:11:21unsuccessfully.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23He doesn't spot the barrier.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26Durr!

0:11:26 > 0:11:30The bike was unlocked because it's broken and worthless,

0:11:30 > 0:11:33so a lot of pain but no gain.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Next, an attempted shoplifter tries to flee...

0:11:38 > 0:11:39Whoops!

0:11:39 > 0:11:44The revolving door revolves the other way.

0:11:44 > 0:11:45Schoolgirl error.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48Just when she does seem to work out the revolving door,

0:11:48 > 0:11:51she abandons that particular exit strategy

0:11:51 > 0:11:55and goes for an open-door policy instead.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57And this man brings the house down.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59Or, more accurately, the Jobcentre.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05He's upset his unemployment benefit hasn't gone into his account

0:12:05 > 0:12:10and decides the best way to complain is to crash through the front doors.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14Later, the judge gives him a 15-month jail sentence

0:12:14 > 0:12:16and 12-month driving ban.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Now, that won't look good on his CV!

0:12:23 > 0:12:26There are now over ten million pensioners in the UK

0:12:26 > 0:12:27and that number is growing,

0:12:27 > 0:12:30which means the number of carers is growing, too.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33Now, the vast majority of those carers are very honest

0:12:33 > 0:12:37and hard-working people but, sadly, a small minority are not.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41Norman is a pensioner

0:12:41 > 0:12:44who fell victim to thieves calling themselves carers...

0:12:44 > 0:12:47She shoved it in her bra.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50..rescued by a camera disguised as a clock.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51That were brilliant, really.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54It were a good bit of thinking from my uncle, to be fair.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57But the family is left in shock.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01It knocked me up a bit, you know - it's like a stab in the back.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03It made me so angry, it really did.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14Rochdale in Greater Manchester used to be a busy mill town.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Most of the mills are now long gone

0:13:16 > 0:13:20but a lot of the workers' pubs are still around.

0:13:20 > 0:13:2476-year-old Norman is Rochdale born and bred.

0:13:24 > 0:13:28He's been a pub landlord for nearly 50 years.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31I think the '70s were the best time for local pubs.

0:13:31 > 0:13:36At that time, your pub was like your local community centre, you know?

0:13:36 > 0:13:40You would call in and have a couple of pints on the way home from work

0:13:40 > 0:13:43and then come back in the evening, you know?

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Norman lives in a flat above his pub, the Tanners Arms,

0:13:46 > 0:13:50which he renovated in 1991.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Norman's granddaughter, Jodie,

0:13:52 > 0:13:56has been a regular at his pub since she was four years old.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58I am really, really close with my grandad.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02He is my rock. He has been there for me through so much.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04He really has.

0:14:05 > 0:14:06He's amazing.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Sadly, 13 years ago,

0:14:08 > 0:14:11Norman had a major health scare

0:14:11 > 0:14:13which has left him with limited mobility.

0:14:13 > 0:14:19He struggles and, in the last three years, he's gradually got worse.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23He doesn't really come down to the pub that much any more.

0:14:23 > 0:14:27Norman's family became increasingly worried about him

0:14:27 > 0:14:28looking after himself,

0:14:28 > 0:14:31so they paid for some people to help with cleaning.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33But they soon became carers, too.

0:14:33 > 0:14:39My granddaughter arranged for a girl to come in two or three days a week

0:14:39 > 0:14:41and do some cleaning for me.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43It were fantastic, it were helping us out,

0:14:43 > 0:14:45because we were all working full-time.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47We were pretty friendly and...

0:14:47 > 0:14:50She was very obliging. In fact, her daughter,

0:14:50 > 0:14:53who'd done some care work, joined her.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56It was nice that we could trust somebody else to help out

0:14:56 > 0:14:59and Norman was happy with it, he got on really, really well with them.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02On several occasions

0:15:02 > 0:15:05I went out with them, went to a restaurant

0:15:05 > 0:15:07for a meal all evening.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Everyone... Everyone were happy.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12But that happiness is not to last.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15Because money soon starts to go missing from Norman's flat.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22It's a week before Christmas and Norman notices

0:15:22 > 0:15:26that cash has suddenly disappeared from his wallet.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30It was money that I had saved for treats, birthdays, trips out.

0:15:30 > 0:15:35He spoke to my uncle and he spoke to my mum, "Have I lent you any money?"

0:15:35 > 0:15:38No. We thought he might have misplaced it,

0:15:38 > 0:15:40he might of miscounted, things like that.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44So my uncle came down, went through everything and made sure,

0:15:44 > 0:15:46"Right, yeah, there is some money missing."

0:15:46 > 0:15:50Norman's family want to find out who's stealing from him.

0:15:50 > 0:15:54Only his carers and relatives have access to the flat.

0:15:54 > 0:15:59My uncle then went and got a little camera in a clock.

0:15:59 > 0:16:04Jodie's uncle, Norman's son, Steve, has decided to turn detective.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07He sets up the hidden camera in the kitchen,

0:16:07 > 0:16:10an hour before the carers are due to arrive.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14The camera doesn't look like a dummy, it just looked like a clock.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17We finished up putting it on the mantelpiece.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21The family leave Norman in the flat. He knows he has to behave

0:16:21 > 0:16:24as if nothing out of the ordinary is happening.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29The mother and daughter carer team arrives.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34INDISTINCT CHAT

0:16:34 > 0:16:36Norman chats with them as usual.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40They don't notice the new clock sitting on the shelf.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44INDISTINCT CHAT

0:16:44 > 0:16:47Soon, it's time for Norman to take a shower.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50The daughter helps him through to the bathroom.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54A few minutes later,

0:16:54 > 0:16:57she's back and she hands something over to her mother.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01It's a handful of cash.

0:17:01 > 0:17:02With Norman out of the way,

0:17:02 > 0:17:06she raided his wallet in the sitting room.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08The mother stuffs the wad into her bra,

0:17:08 > 0:17:11clearly happy with her ill-gotten gains.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14Coincidentally, she looked straight at the clock,

0:17:14 > 0:17:18oblivious to the fact the camera is seeing everything.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20The carers leave.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26And the family arrive later to check Norman's wallet.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29They find that ?80 is missing

0:17:29 > 0:17:32and take a look to see what the camera's captured.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35Jodie hadn't prepared herself for how she'd feel

0:17:35 > 0:17:39seeing the carers steal from her grandfather.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42The first time I actually watched this video, I was in tears.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46I was crying. It was awful.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49It made me so angry, it really did.

0:17:49 > 0:17:54Seeing people he trusted stealing from him affects Norman deeply.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57It's like a stab in the back.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01You know, you feel like you've been groomed because when somebody

0:18:01 > 0:18:05friendly like that comes along, you really appreciate that...

0:18:06 > 0:18:08That warmth and that friendship.

0:18:09 > 0:18:10And then...

0:18:12 > 0:18:15..it all gets smashed asunder, doesn't it?

0:18:15 > 0:18:17Talk about being judges of character,

0:18:17 > 0:18:21I mean, I've had enough practice but I'm still not that good, am I?

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Steve wants to get more incriminating evidence

0:18:26 > 0:18:30before going to the police. He writes down the serial numbers

0:18:30 > 0:18:33of the cash in Norman's wallet so he can identify the notes

0:18:33 > 0:18:37if they are stolen during the carers' next visit.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41Sure enough, ?90 vanishes from his dad's wallet.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44Steve challenges the carers.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48My uncle confronted them, she threw a wad of notes at my uncle.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50Serial numbers on the notes matched the serial numbers

0:18:50 > 0:18:53that were written down, so that were brilliant, really.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57It were a good bit of thinking from my uncle, to be fair.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00So they called the police and they arrested them.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02And the so-called carers are charged.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08They pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11In the face of such evidence, they had little choice.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15The mother got a six-month custodial sentence and the daughter 20 weeks,

0:19:15 > 0:19:18both suspended for two years.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21They must also carry out 200 hours of unpaid work

0:19:21 > 0:19:24and pay compensation and court costs.

0:19:27 > 0:19:32Jodie now looks after her grandad and they're closer than ever.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34It's nice cos you get that bit of extra time with him as well.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37We'll sit down, we'll have a brew, we'll have a chat.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41Sometimes a heated discussion, depending on what it's over.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44It is really nice to be able to do that for him.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48Norman's family are planning a special night for him soon.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50It is quite a big year this year,

0:19:50 > 0:19:54it's the 25th anniversary of the pub being open.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57He will be able to see how much he's loved and appreciated.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01And Norman can't wait to catch up with the regulars

0:20:01 > 0:20:02in his beloved bar.

0:20:02 > 0:20:07I just want a nice, peaceful life, good friends in the bar.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09That's what life's about, really.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17It's important to remember that there are only a few bad apples

0:20:17 > 0:20:20amongst the millions of carers in the UK. But what can people do

0:20:20 > 0:20:24if they're suspicious that something isn't quite right?

0:20:24 > 0:20:27If you think somebody working in your home is potentially stealing

0:20:27 > 0:20:31from you, the best way to gather evidence is to keep a log

0:20:31 > 0:20:34of property or money that you have coming in, perhaps going out,

0:20:34 > 0:20:38so that you can see when it's being taken and you can actually identify

0:20:38 > 0:20:40who was in the house at the time when it happened.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44If the person you suspect of stealing from your loved one

0:20:44 > 0:20:47finds either the hidden camera or the detailed diary

0:20:47 > 0:20:48that you've been keeping,

0:20:48 > 0:20:52I would never advise to confront them face-to-face.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55I would perhaps come up with an excuse as to something

0:20:55 > 0:20:58like you're just looking after the loved one when you're not around

0:20:58 > 0:21:01and just keeping a diary for that purpose

0:21:01 > 0:21:04and I would then, when you can, when you find an appropriate moment,

0:21:04 > 0:21:07contact the police and let them know what the situation is.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10I think it is really important if you've got concerns about somebody

0:21:10 > 0:21:14you love being taken advantage of, come and speak to the police early.

0:21:14 > 0:21:15We can give you some advice,

0:21:15 > 0:21:17we can listen to what your concerns are

0:21:17 > 0:21:20and you might just have the missing piece of the jigsaw

0:21:20 > 0:21:23that we need to put some information together.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34Corbridge in Northumberland is a quiet village

0:21:34 > 0:21:36where nothing much happens -

0:21:36 > 0:21:39just the way the locals like it.

0:21:40 > 0:21:45Tourist information officer Steph has lived here for 15 years.

0:21:45 > 0:21:49I moved to Corbridge with my husband initially to develop a property

0:21:49 > 0:21:53and sell it on but we just fell in love with the place.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56I have three children now and I have no intention

0:21:56 > 0:22:00of ever moving from Corbridge. It is almost crime free,

0:22:00 > 0:22:04you never worry about leaving your bike outside the front of your house

0:22:04 > 0:22:06or anything like that.

0:22:06 > 0:22:07It's a very honest village.

0:22:09 > 0:22:1425 miles from Corbridge, in Durham Police's Chester-le-Street station,

0:22:14 > 0:22:18Detective Sergeant Andy Smith heads up a serious crime team.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22I've got just around about 25 years' service,

0:22:22 > 0:22:24predominately working within the CID.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26We deal with some of the most serious jobs

0:22:26 > 0:22:28that the force will face.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Andy and his colleagues have recently been facing

0:22:30 > 0:22:33a series of raids on convenience stores

0:22:33 > 0:22:36in small towns and villages in the north-east.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39There have been a spate of premises in rural areas being attacked

0:22:39 > 0:22:42where there was ATM machines inside.

0:22:42 > 0:22:43Obviously what they were trying to do

0:22:43 > 0:22:45was get the cash out of the machines.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47And Andy's team has gathered intelligence

0:22:47 > 0:22:49that a gang's about to strike.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51That's what led us to be in Corbridge

0:22:51 > 0:22:53on the morning of the 8th of January.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55Despite Corbridge having one of the lowest crime rates

0:22:55 > 0:22:59in the country, Steph and the other villagers are in for a shock.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07It's 4am and the cameras outside Corbridge's village store...

0:23:08 > 0:23:09..show two men approaching.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14Their faces are covered, so the identities are concealed

0:23:14 > 0:23:17and actually you can see that this guy here is on his mobile phone

0:23:17 > 0:23:18at that time.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21He may be calling other accomplices.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23Now you'll see they'll attack

0:23:23 > 0:23:25using crowbars and other tools and weapons.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27They know exactly what they're doing,

0:23:27 > 0:23:29they know how to force doors like that

0:23:29 > 0:23:32and how to get into the premises in a matter of seconds.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36The men quickly find their target - a cash machine.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40A car pulls up outside,

0:23:40 > 0:23:43and three more men remove large straps from the boot

0:23:43 > 0:23:46while their accomplices dislodge the ATM.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50They wrapped that around the ATM machine

0:23:50 > 0:23:54and drive the car away to drag it out of the store.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56They're highly organised.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01He realises there's a CCTV camera, so they smashed that.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05But unknown to them, other cameras are still recording.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07And that's not their only problem.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10A strap isn't reaching the cash machine.

0:24:11 > 0:24:15They just haven't got the car close enough to the store.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19They're wasting valuable time.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22The cameras that have been recording this crime

0:24:22 > 0:24:25are about to witness its dramatic conclusion.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28Thanks to the information they received,

0:24:28 > 0:24:31Andy's colleagues have been waiting just around the corner

0:24:31 > 0:24:33and decide it's time to act.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36The burglars hear them arriving and try to escape.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39We were in the right place at the right time and we could react

0:24:39 > 0:24:41within minutes of them attacking the village store.

0:24:41 > 0:24:46The police park in front of the getaway car, blocking their escape.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49One of the burglars even tries to hide in the car boot

0:24:49 > 0:24:52before thinking better of it. It was the guy that was in the boot,

0:24:52 > 0:24:54I think he realised that that wasn't the best hiding place

0:24:54 > 0:24:57when his colleagues were in the process of being arrested,

0:24:57 > 0:24:59so he jumped out of the boot and tried to run away,

0:24:59 > 0:25:02but he was arrested just a few yards away.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05This is a dangerous operation for the officers.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08It's the middle of the night, they are five balaclava'd men,

0:25:08 > 0:25:10armed with tools which could be used as weapons

0:25:10 > 0:25:13to cause some serious harm to the arrest team.

0:25:13 > 0:25:14They saw what they were faced with

0:25:14 > 0:25:18and the most appropriate way to use the minimum force that was necessary

0:25:18 > 0:25:21was to Taser one of the suspects to get control of that person

0:25:21 > 0:25:24and, as a result of that, the remaining arrest team

0:25:24 > 0:25:27could deal with the other offenders really, really well.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30The operation is a success.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32Five men are arrested at the scene

0:25:32 > 0:25:36but the officers suspect others are involved.

0:25:36 > 0:25:40We would expect them to have a second vehicle relatively close by

0:25:40 > 0:25:43which they can then put the ATM into

0:25:43 > 0:25:46and drive with no real suspicion being raised.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49The police start searching the area

0:25:49 > 0:25:52and the locals realise something's up.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55We heard the police helicopter, it was really, really low

0:25:55 > 0:25:57and then light lit up the whole bedroom.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00We initially thought that somebody had went missing

0:26:00 > 0:26:03and were concerned for their wellbeing.

0:26:03 > 0:26:04Definitely didn't have any idea

0:26:04 > 0:26:07that it was going to be something like this.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11It was about 35 minutes later that we actually find the vehicle,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14parked up in a little cul-de-sac.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17Inside the transit van is another one of their associates

0:26:17 > 0:26:19and, as the police officers arrive,

0:26:19 > 0:26:22he's the process of trying to damage a mobile phone.

0:26:22 > 0:26:26With no incriminating CCTV footage of the suspect in the van,

0:26:26 > 0:26:30the police need to find alternative evidence to prove he was involved.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33Even though he tried to damage his phone, we could still retrieve

0:26:33 > 0:26:37the information that we needed, which proved he was in contact

0:26:37 > 0:26:41with the five burglars up until the point of his arrest.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44Andy shows the gang the CCTV evidence.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47They realise the game is up.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50Me and my team were responsible for interviewing the six suspects.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54They were quite accepting of the situation,

0:26:54 > 0:26:57they knew they'd been caught, they knew they were bang to rights.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Every time a group of criminals like this goes out to commit crime,

0:27:00 > 0:27:03they have got to be lucky every night.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05We've only got to be lucky once.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08And, on this night, they were unlucky.

0:27:11 > 0:27:16In court, all six men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20They were sentenced to a combined total of 15 years in prison.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28Knowing the gang is behind bars

0:27:28 > 0:27:32is a huge relief for Steph and the community of Corbridge.

0:27:32 > 0:27:37Because the police responded so quickly and caught all of them,

0:27:37 > 0:27:39I think it almost...

0:27:39 > 0:27:44It reassured them a little bit and I think a lot of people, yeah,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47really wanted to give the police a pat on the back

0:27:47 > 0:27:49and congratulate them.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51It is a really rewarding, worthwhile result

0:27:51 > 0:27:54because this is an organised crime group.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57As a force, we showed that we can tackle them,

0:27:57 > 0:28:00we dealt with them and ultimately we sent to prison.

0:28:00 > 0:28:04I think the incident will be talked about for a long time.

0:28:04 > 0:28:08I think people will be telling their children and their grandchildren

0:28:08 > 0:28:10about it for a long time.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18That's it for today. And that's it for a few more criminals

0:28:18 > 0:28:20who've been Caught Red Handed.

0:28:52 > 0:28:53Need a medic.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55# We are weightless... #

0:28:55 > 0:28:57Humanitarian mission.

0:28:57 > 0:28:58# We are invincible... #

0:28:58 > 0:28:59On the Somali border.
