0:01:45 > 0:01:48Out of the back, there were drops of blood on the floor.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51It was either, A, wounded animals in there,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53or, B, it could have been a wounded burglar in there.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04In South Wales, there's a farm which is a little...

0:02:04 > 0:02:06well, out of the ordinary.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Farmer Greg isn't interested in cows and sheep.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12For him, it's all about wild boars.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Yeah, my boy.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18This is Scratch. This one was hand-reared from a baby.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21And he got his name because he loves a little scratch.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23He's the only one that does.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27Greg began rearing wild boars six years ago,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29and now he has over 80 of them.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33Wild boar has always had a mystique about it.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35I've done pigs. Pigs are boring!

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Come on. This is Boris, he's the main stud boar.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43Loppy, because she's got slightly loppy-eared ears.

0:02:43 > 0:02:44This is Bertha.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48She's the matriarch of the whole sounder, she's the boss.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52With boar, you get to know them, you know the characters,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54you've got them for a minimum of two years

0:02:54 > 0:02:56before they go out the door.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58It's more of a way of life.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Fully grown adults can weigh over 27 stone

0:03:02 > 0:03:04and cause serious injury.

0:03:04 > 0:03:09They're not like a lion or a tiger. They wouldn't attack you to eat you.

0:03:09 > 0:03:10The danger comes with their size.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13They can cause damage to people rushing past,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15they can run at 30mph-plus.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18They don't go over fences, they just go through them.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21You only contain them with electricity.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Greg has built electric fences to keep the boars in.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28He's also trained a Rottweiler and set up security cameras

0:03:28 > 0:03:31to guard against thieves taking his farm equipment.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34We started using trail cameras on here

0:03:34 > 0:03:36because things were going missing, little things,

0:03:36 > 0:03:39diesel pinched out of some of the machinery,

0:03:39 > 0:03:41and they give you a good insight into wildlife

0:03:41 > 0:03:44and what's happening on your farm.

0:03:45 > 0:03:50The cameras are triggered by movement, and capture still images.

0:03:50 > 0:03:51Soon after Greg installed them,

0:03:51 > 0:03:54they snapped squirrels and foxes paying his farm a visit.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59But it wasn't long before his security system

0:03:59 > 0:04:02captured something far more sinister.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07It's Sunday morning in early spring,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10and Greg's just arrived at the farm.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13It was about 8.45am I got here.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17Turned the corner, the gate was open. Panic stations instantly.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Greg's father has the only other key for the gate.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23My first thought was, why is he here this time of the morning?

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Then Greg turns the corner

0:04:27 > 0:04:30and sees his wild boars have got out of their pen.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32It was like, oh, my God, what has happened?

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Has something happened to him inside the pen?

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Has he got in feeding them and left the gate open?

0:04:37 > 0:04:38Has he had a heart attack?

0:04:38 > 0:04:40But his father isn't there.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Greg sees a barn door has been forced open

0:04:43 > 0:04:46and realises he's been burgled.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49Things were going round in my head.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52They say your life flashes before you. It was.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55All the farm machinery and tools have been stolen.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58You name it that we use on the farm, they took it.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02The pigs that were now running round outside had gone in there

0:05:02 > 0:05:04because we keep the feed in there.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07There was 600 quid's worth of feed just thrown away.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10It was bedlam. The losses were just mounting up and up and up.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Greg reports the burglary to the police.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17His next problem is the havoc the escaped boars might cause.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21He phones local farmers who are experienced in controlling animals

0:05:21 > 0:05:23and asks for their help.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26It's important to have one of these emergency plans

0:05:26 > 0:05:28for a nightmare scenario like this.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31We got half a dozen people here within about 15 minutes.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Some of these boys are armed, like myself.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36If we have to, we would destroy them,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38if there was endangerment to public.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42Greg and his posse start to round up the escaped wild boars.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Even though they're called wild,

0:05:44 > 0:05:48there haven't been any living in the Welsh countryside for 300 years.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50We were counting them in

0:05:50 > 0:05:52and we thought we were getting on top of it.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54And as we were doing this,

0:05:54 > 0:05:56there was more and more animals coming in,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58and I kept thinking to myself, "Have I miscounted?

0:05:58 > 0:06:01"Have we got more animals than I thought I had?"

0:06:01 > 0:06:02They were coming from everywhere.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Not realising, as fast as we were putting them into the pen,

0:06:05 > 0:06:07they were just hopping out of the pen

0:06:07 > 0:06:09and coming back around in circles.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Greg spots holes in the electric fence

0:06:11 > 0:06:14through which the boars were escaping.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19The burglars must have cut their way through it to get to the barn.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22The whole system now was defunct.

0:06:22 > 0:06:27The police arrive, and Greg gives them a list of his stolen property.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31They went off then to do whatever they do best.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35We were left to try and corral the animals in.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39Greg works out that 42 wild boars are missing.

0:06:39 > 0:06:40He checks his cameras.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Some boars can be seen escaping seven hours earlier.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51Seven hours would give them a 10-, 12-mile head start on us,

0:06:51 > 0:06:53so I was starting to panic then.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58The cameras also shows snapshots of the burglars.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01They aren't identifiable,

0:07:01 > 0:07:04but the pictures do reveal useful information.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07We could see the people, we could see the timescale,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10they were here almost eight hours on-site.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12We see the van they were using,

0:07:12 > 0:07:13so we had enough information now

0:07:13 > 0:07:16to phone the police and say, "Look, this is what I've got."

0:07:17 > 0:07:19But time is of the essence.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Greg and the police need to track down the thieves

0:07:22 > 0:07:24and the escaped boars fast.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Later, will Wales have wild boar

0:07:29 > 0:07:32living in its woods for the first time in centuries?

0:07:32 > 0:07:34We could be discussing this in 20 years and saying,

0:07:34 > 0:07:37"Pff, that was a storm in a teacup."

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Or it could be, "Oh, my God, it's an absolute nightmare.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41"They're everywhere."

0:07:41 > 0:07:43Also coming up...

0:07:43 > 0:07:47A shop owner who's not only faced with a thief,

0:07:47 > 0:07:48but with a thief who's brought

0:07:48 > 0:07:51a lot of her thieving friends along with her, too.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53We could have lost everything.

0:07:53 > 0:07:58Everything that we'd worked so hard for.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02The shoplifters are shameless as they casually empty shelves.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04She's come in her nightdress.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Yeah, she's also brought a trolley with her,

0:08:06 > 0:08:07which she fills up with goods.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17This man's been helping himself

0:08:17 > 0:08:19to various medications at his local chemist's.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22And he's going to need some headache tablets in a moment,

0:08:22 > 0:08:24when he takes steps to escape.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Very uncertain steps.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36When this bungler... Oops! ..sorry, burglar,

0:08:36 > 0:08:38decides to exit through the ceiling,

0:08:38 > 0:08:41he falls from a great height, not once...

0:08:44 > 0:08:46..but twice...

0:08:46 > 0:08:48bringing half the roof down with him.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Then he opts for a different exit route, ten feet away.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58He does like removing chunks of the ceiling, this chap.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Careful! Careful!

0:09:03 > 0:09:05Well, he appears to have done it.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08Now he just needs to avoid that hole ten feet away.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11Yep, that's the one.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16The police find this comedy of errors less than funny,

0:09:16 > 0:09:20and before long, his criminal clumsiness will be his downfall.

0:09:21 > 0:09:22Ouch.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31Every year, over £2 billion is stolen from Britain's retailers

0:09:31 > 0:09:32by their employees.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36But, fortunately, some of those dishonest staff get caught,

0:09:36 > 0:09:38because greed conquers brains.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43In the game show Supermarket Sweep,

0:09:43 > 0:09:47contestants emptied the shelves of all they could carry,

0:09:47 > 0:09:51rather like these people are, but this is no game.

0:09:51 > 0:09:52These are thieves.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56She's brought a trolley with her, which she fills up with goods,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59and she walks out of the shop without paying for them.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03They've been betrayed by a valued member of their shop's staff

0:10:03 > 0:10:07at the same time as their family-run store is on the brink of bankruptcy.

0:10:07 > 0:10:12I was absolutely devastated when I was told that it was her.

0:10:19 > 0:10:24Linda and Kamal moved to Portsmouth, on the south coast, from London,

0:10:24 > 0:10:2934 years ago, to try and make a go of running a small local store.

0:10:29 > 0:10:30We bought the shop.

0:10:30 > 0:10:35It was quite rundown, but with two young boys,

0:10:35 > 0:10:38cos Bobby was a year old and Ricky was four,

0:10:38 > 0:10:42we've managed to build a business and bring them up as well.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47Linda and Kamal's son Bob has recently joined the family business,

0:10:47 > 0:10:49and works full-time in the shop.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51I think, working with my parents,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54I've come a lot closer to them than when I was working outside.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57I'm proud of what they've achieved.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59When the recession hit, back in the '80s,

0:10:59 > 0:11:01they worked hard, got through it,

0:11:01 > 0:11:03and it's a lot busier from when we took over.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07It's lovely that you have a family who are so involved.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10They have six part-time employees.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12We don't treat our staff, really, like staff.

0:11:12 > 0:11:13It's like more of a friendship.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Some of them, who've been with us 24 years,

0:11:16 > 0:11:20also have a lot of input into how we run it.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25But after many years of steady success, suddenly,

0:11:25 > 0:11:27the business starts to fail.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30My parents started planning their retirement,

0:11:30 > 0:11:33but with what's happened, it didn't go to plan.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36It turns out that inside this family grocers,

0:11:36 > 0:11:37they have a rotten apple.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47Linda and Kamal begin to notice a dramatic drop in their takings.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51It was getting increasingly difficult to pay bills,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54and we'd be having arguments at home.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56My husband would say to me, you know, "You've got to pay the bill,"

0:11:56 > 0:11:58and I would say, "I haven't got the money,"

0:11:58 > 0:12:00and he said, "Where's it going?"

0:12:00 > 0:12:03We thought it was our expenses, we thought our expenses were too high,

0:12:03 > 0:12:06but we worked out how much we should be making in the shop

0:12:06 > 0:12:07with our turnover,

0:12:07 > 0:12:12and we worked out that it can't be our expenses.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16They also rule out shoplifting, because the losses are so huge.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21It was like we're fighting a losing battle.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Linda starts working six days a week

0:12:23 > 0:12:25to try to spot where things are going wrong.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29I did that for a year, but not working on a Sunday,

0:12:29 > 0:12:32because Sunday was a day that we wanted it to be a family day.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37On Sundays, Linda asks her most trusted employee

0:12:37 > 0:12:39to take charge of the shop.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42She'd been with us 11 years.

0:12:42 > 0:12:46She was more of my right-hand woman, she was totally, totally trusted.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49My mum took her on from young, my parents treated her like a daughter,

0:12:49 > 0:12:52the same they would me and my brother.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55Despite her best efforts,

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Linda can't get to the bottom of what's going wrong.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01The family realise they must take drastic action

0:13:01 > 0:13:03to keep the business afloat.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07All our savings that we had, we were putting back into the business.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Half their life has gone into the shop,

0:13:09 > 0:13:12and to end up with nothing, it's quite sad.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16I cashed in all my husband's endowment policy,

0:13:16 > 0:13:17and put that money in.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20The shop was on the verge of collapse.

0:13:20 > 0:13:25But one Monday morning, Linda makes an alarming discovery.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28She checks the cash dispenser in the shop,

0:13:28 > 0:13:31and is shocked to find it's completely empty.

0:13:31 > 0:13:36I know we'd banked £1,600 in our ATM,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39and it showed it had dispensed £460-odd,

0:13:39 > 0:13:42so there's about £1,200 gone missing.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45Linda thinks the ATM might be faulty,

0:13:45 > 0:13:49and phones the supply company, but they assure her the machine

0:13:49 > 0:13:51won't be to blame for the missing cash.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55Then I thought, instead of arguing, let's check the cameras,

0:13:55 > 0:13:58let's just check how many people have gone to the ATM.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02Bob views the shop's security camera footage from the Sunday.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05It shows the member of staff they trusted

0:14:05 > 0:14:09taking the cashpoint money boxes behind the counter.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12Bob is shocked by what happens next.

0:14:12 > 0:14:15She was actually taking money out of the ATM, instead of loading it.

0:14:17 > 0:14:18I just couldn't believe it.

0:14:18 > 0:14:23I had to go back two or three times, to make sure what I saw was correct.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25Very hard to get over.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28Bob breaks the news to his mum.

0:14:28 > 0:14:33I was absolutely devastated when I was told that it was her.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35It wouldn't have been in my wildest dreams,

0:14:35 > 0:14:39because she was treated part of the family,

0:14:39 > 0:14:41and she, in turn, would make sure

0:14:41 > 0:14:44that I got to the car all right every night.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46She'd say to me, "Lin, people know you've got a shop."

0:14:46 > 0:14:51So, she'd built up such trust that you wouldn't have even thought.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54Bob looks at more footage, and it gets worse.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57He finds that stealing from the cashpoint isn't the only scam

0:14:57 > 0:15:00this employee has been up to.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04There was her friends coming in, ex-member of staff coming in,

0:15:04 > 0:15:07picking up goods, filling up their trolleys,

0:15:07 > 0:15:08filling up bags full of cigarettes,

0:15:08 > 0:15:11and just walking out with no payment.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15Bob's horrified as he watches the thief and six cronies

0:15:15 > 0:15:18carry out a crooked Supermarket Sweep at the store.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22She's selecting goods from the shelf,

0:15:22 > 0:15:24she's actually bagging her items up

0:15:24 > 0:15:27without scanning them through the till...

0:15:27 > 0:15:31Linda's heartbroken to see that one of the other shoplifters

0:15:31 > 0:15:33is a former employee and friend.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36She's appalled just how casual these people are,

0:15:36 > 0:15:39as they go about stripping the shop that supports her family.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41She's come in her nightdress.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Yeah, she's also brought a trolley with her,

0:15:44 > 0:15:45that she fills up with goods,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48and she walks out the shop without paying for them.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51It makes me feel sick, cos it's the first time I've watched this.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54- It looks like she's doing, like, a full weekly shop.- Mm.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56And she doesn't make any payment.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00She's just put some money in her pocket. Very upsetting.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06The family's detective work has found the truth, but there's no joy.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09It's a bitter blow to their trust in people.

0:16:09 > 0:16:14We could have lost everything that we'd worked so hard for,

0:16:14 > 0:16:15and I feel...

0:16:15 > 0:16:17I feel so guilty in this.

0:16:17 > 0:16:18I...

0:16:18 > 0:16:21Because it was a shop that was run by me,

0:16:21 > 0:16:23that I'd trusted her so much...

0:16:26 > 0:16:27And I feel like...

0:16:29 > 0:16:32You know, you feel exploited, you feel...

0:16:32 > 0:16:34why were you so naive?

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Why were you so naive to have trusted somebody totally?

0:16:41 > 0:16:44The family showed their findings to the police,

0:16:44 > 0:16:46and the thieves were arrested.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53In court, the now ex-member of staff

0:16:53 > 0:16:56was sentenced to two years in prison.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03Six accomplices were given six-month sentences, suspended for a year,

0:17:03 > 0:17:06as well as community orders.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10They also had to pay compensation, fines and surcharges.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19Linda and her family have decided to treat this traumatic time

0:17:19 > 0:17:21as a valuable learning experience.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24I think you've got to have trust to go through life.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26You cannot tarnish everyone with the same brush.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29And I must say, the staff we've got at the moment are wonderful.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33But you've also got to make sure that they don't get to a situation

0:17:33 > 0:17:36where they start taking advantage of you.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40The family can now once again look to a happier future.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43It's going to take us a few years to recover,

0:17:43 > 0:17:46but we're already seeing the difference.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49Cos we've been there for so long, it's something...

0:17:49 > 0:17:52that I would hopefully want my kids to take it over,

0:17:52 > 0:17:55hopefully keep it going for many more years.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04Now, the owner of this car loves his hot set of wheels.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08It's the sort of car he would do anything to protect,

0:18:08 > 0:18:11including a stunt straight out of a kung fu movie.

0:18:17 > 0:18:18It's nine o'clock at night,

0:18:18 > 0:18:21and a sports car owner makes a pit stop at a petrol station.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26After filling up, he leaves his car on the forecourt,

0:18:26 > 0:18:28and goes to pay for his fuel.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33Suddenly, a mystery man appears, clocks the car is unlocked,

0:18:33 > 0:18:35and decide to steal it.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38He gets in the car.

0:18:38 > 0:18:43The key is still in the ignition, so he thinks it's his lucky day.

0:18:43 > 0:18:44But it isn't.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47The owner spots the stranger in his car,

0:18:47 > 0:18:50and what follows is like something from a martial arts movie.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52Hi-yah!

0:18:52 > 0:18:55A two-footed karate kick Jackie Chan would be proud of.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00Let's see it again, in slow motion.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04He accelerates to the car, jumps, and boom!

0:19:04 > 0:19:06Take that!

0:19:06 > 0:19:09And the action isn't finished yet.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11The carjacker manages to drive off,

0:19:11 > 0:19:15but the owner climbs through the window, Dukes of Hazzard-style.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17And the crook scarpers.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20He doesn't get very far, though.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23Soon, he's arrested and charged with attempted car theft.

0:19:24 > 0:19:28And for the sports car stuntman, Hollywood could soon be calling.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37Well, that guy went to great lengths to stop the thief in his tracks.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40But what can the rest of us do to protect our vehicles

0:19:40 > 0:19:43without resorting to death-defying stunts?

0:19:43 > 0:19:45During last winter,

0:19:45 > 0:19:48we had about 13 vehicles stolen outside people's houses,

0:19:48 > 0:19:50either on their drives, or on the road,

0:19:50 > 0:19:53where they'd left the engines running

0:19:53 > 0:19:55so that they defrosted and they warmed up

0:19:55 > 0:19:58while they had their breakfast, and people need to remember,

0:19:58 > 0:20:00sometimes your insurance is invalidated

0:20:00 > 0:20:02by doing something like that,

0:20:02 > 0:20:04making it the temptation that it is to thieves.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07Cars are vulnerable if somebody breaks into your home,

0:20:07 > 0:20:09so my advice would always be,

0:20:09 > 0:20:11make sure your keys are out of harm's way,

0:20:11 > 0:20:14make sure that they are not readily visible,

0:20:14 > 0:20:16so you're also protecting your car

0:20:16 > 0:20:19when it's left unattended outside your house.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22If you leave your sat nav and your car keys and your home keys

0:20:22 > 0:20:25in the same location and they're stolen together,

0:20:25 > 0:20:27that can be a really deadly combination,

0:20:27 > 0:20:29because what the suspect can do

0:20:29 > 0:20:33is identify from the home setting on the sat nav where you actually live.

0:20:33 > 0:20:34If you're outside the newsagent's,

0:20:34 > 0:20:37just nipping in to pick up a newspaper or some sweets,

0:20:37 > 0:20:40turn the engine off, take your keys with you.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42It is so easy for somebody just to jump in, and they're away.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56Back to Greg's farm in South Wales, where during the night,

0:20:56 > 0:20:57thieves had broken in.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01They cut holes in his fence and stole valuable farming equipment.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04They also released a large number of wild boars

0:21:04 > 0:21:08that escaped through the holes into the surrounding countryside.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12The police have just called Greg with some news.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16They phoned me to say that they'd made several arrests,

0:21:16 > 0:21:18and they'd recovered what they thought

0:21:18 > 0:21:21to be all the property that was involved.

0:21:21 > 0:21:26Acting on a tip-off, the police have arrested suspects at a house nearby,

0:21:26 > 0:21:28just a few hours after Greg reported the crime.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33The officers that had been here were part of the team going in there,

0:21:33 > 0:21:36and as he walked in there, he thought, "My God,

0:21:36 > 0:21:40"everything that I've just been told on this ginormous list is there."

0:21:41 > 0:21:43Greg goes to the house,

0:21:43 > 0:21:47and shows the police a van he'd seen on his security camera footage.

0:21:47 > 0:21:48We went looking for this van,

0:21:48 > 0:21:51and it wasn't immediately parked outside the property,

0:21:51 > 0:21:53it was parked up the road a couple of hundred yards.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57Out of the back, there were drops of blood on the floor.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59We made a decision to get in there.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02It was either, A, wounded animals in there,

0:22:02 > 0:22:05or, B, it could have been a wounded burglar in there.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07They forced the van's rear doors open.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11It was quite a horrific sight. Dead animals in there.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13It was very messy, you know?

0:22:13 > 0:22:17In the van, there are two dead wild boars.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20It was worse knowing that...

0:22:20 > 0:22:23The pain and suffering the animals went through on that night

0:22:23 > 0:22:25was worse than the burglary, you know?

0:22:26 > 0:22:30We spend a lot of time nurturing these animals, to get used to us.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32When I turn up, they think they're going to be fed,

0:22:32 > 0:22:35so when these people come up, they probably thought the same.

0:22:35 > 0:22:39They were going to them looking for food, and ended up being butchered.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43But Greg can't dwell on that for long.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45Lots of his boars are still missing.

0:22:47 > 0:22:51We were unaware how many they had killed.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53We found, about four miles away,

0:22:53 > 0:22:56an animal which had had a wound under its jaw,

0:22:56 > 0:22:59so we knew some might have escaped and bled to death,

0:22:59 > 0:23:01so we really didn't know what we were chasing.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04The work went on right into the night, you know,

0:23:04 > 0:23:07we were searching till silly hours o'clock.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10Although wild boars are unlikely to attack people,

0:23:10 > 0:23:13it is unknown what their effect on the countryside will be.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16PC Mark Goulding,

0:23:16 > 0:23:19one of just three specially trained wildlife officers in Wales,

0:23:19 > 0:23:21is alerted.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24I received a telephone call to say

0:23:24 > 0:23:27a burglary had taken place to a wild boar farm.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30That in itself was unique.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32Why anybody would burgle a wild boar farm...

0:23:32 > 0:23:36But when they told me that at least...

0:23:36 > 0:23:3940-odd boar were unaccounted for

0:23:39 > 0:23:42and were beyond the boundaries of the farm,

0:23:42 > 0:23:44they didn't know what to do,

0:23:44 > 0:23:46how they were going to deal with it, and what the offences were.

0:23:46 > 0:23:50As well as the burglary, the thieves could be charged

0:23:50 > 0:23:54with causing an animal unnecessary suffering, if it can be proved.

0:23:54 > 0:23:59So, Mark asks for a postmortem to be carried out on the two dead animals

0:23:59 > 0:24:01found in the back of the thieves' van.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05The importance of an autopsy helps me evidence how they died,

0:24:05 > 0:24:07to show a cruelty offence.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10The thieves could also be charged

0:24:10 > 0:24:14with allowing a non-native species to escape into the wild.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17I had a significant challenge.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20I had to prove and evidence

0:24:20 > 0:24:23that the animals were beyond the boundaries of the farm,

0:24:23 > 0:24:26that they were indeed in a wild state.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29And that means getting a definitive photo

0:24:29 > 0:24:32of one of Greg's boars in the countryside.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35Four of the animals were female, but more importantly,

0:24:35 > 0:24:39two were pregnant, which meant those piglets,

0:24:39 > 0:24:44those boarlets, would fundamentally be a first generation

0:24:44 > 0:24:45of Welsh wild boar.

0:24:45 > 0:24:50Wild boar became extinct in Wales three centuries ago.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54Mark teams up with animal tracking experts from Cardiff University

0:24:54 > 0:24:57to see if that's about to change.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01We utilised trail cameras, we baited the trail cameras as well,

0:25:01 > 0:25:04and we started picking up trails of where the animals were moving.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08Meanwhile, Greg continues to try to catch the boars

0:25:08 > 0:25:10that come back onto his land.

0:25:10 > 0:25:15They were going probably in a 30-mile circle of this place

0:25:15 > 0:25:18before they were coming back here, and we were able, in the night,

0:25:18 > 0:25:22for two days either side, to sit here and wait,

0:25:22 > 0:25:23and as they were coming in,

0:25:23 > 0:25:26we'd bait them into a catch pen, and boom, we had them.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29But the traps only work for a short while.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32Boars are observant and intelligent.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Once they learnt what these traps were doing,

0:25:35 > 0:25:38as soon as they wised up, they were useless.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41Over the following weeks, Mark and his trackers

0:25:41 > 0:25:42use jam and peanut butter

0:25:42 > 0:25:46to try to lure the wild boars in front of their cameras.

0:25:46 > 0:25:50Finding these animals was one of the hardest things I've ever done.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54Everything else was activating our trail cameras bar the wild boar.

0:25:54 > 0:25:59Badgers started eating the peanut butter, squirrels eating the jam,

0:25:59 > 0:26:02and it was becoming incredibly frustrating.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04They were like ghosts.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07We'd go into thickets, and I could hear them, but could I see them?

0:26:09 > 0:26:12Finally, after three months of weekly camera checks...

0:26:13 > 0:26:16..Mark gets the evidence he needs.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18I remember putting it in the laptop,

0:26:18 > 0:26:22and for a minute, I really struggled to comprehend what I was looking at,

0:26:22 > 0:26:26and then as the animal moved and it turned, I realised it was wild boar.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29The sense of relief was significant.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31I was so, so happy.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34I had enough for the Crown Prosecution.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37That was a moment I will never forget.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40There's now enough evidence for multiple charges

0:26:40 > 0:26:42against the three men who raided Greg's farm.

0:26:46 > 0:26:50In court, they were sentenced to a combined total

0:26:50 > 0:26:52of ten years, six months in prison.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58And Mark had broken new legal ground in this country,

0:26:58 > 0:26:59proving the thieves' raid

0:26:59 > 0:27:03allowed a non-native species to escape into the wild.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06This is the first conviction of its kind

0:27:06 > 0:27:10against a viable breeding population of wild boar.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12And that, in itself, is unique.

0:27:12 > 0:27:17The case helped Mark win a National Wildlife Officer Of The Year award.

0:27:17 > 0:27:21He continues to monitor Britain's newest wild species - boar.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23This is snuffling.

0:27:23 > 0:27:27So, basically, the wild boar are ploughing up the ground.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30We've also got some lovely footprints of a wild boar.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33That's unmistakable - that is wild boar.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37Farmer Greg has boosted his security system,

0:27:37 > 0:27:40and now has permission to build a house on the farm

0:27:40 > 0:27:43so he can keep an eye on things overnight.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46And his escaped boars seem to be adapting to their new lives.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49After a 300-year gap,

0:27:49 > 0:27:53wild boars are now officially back in the Welsh countryside.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55A couple of months ago, I attended a call-out,

0:27:55 > 0:27:59and there was a large boar, female boar, there, in a stables,

0:27:59 > 0:28:03who'd given birth on Christmas Day, with three little boarlets.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05So we know they're now breeding.

0:28:05 > 0:28:07Of course, they were native here hundreds of years ago,

0:28:07 > 0:28:09but at the same time,

0:28:09 > 0:28:12we have habitat now that's gone on for hundreds of years without them,

0:28:12 > 0:28:15so it's a bit of an unknown.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17We could be discussing this in 20 years and saying,

0:28:17 > 0:28:19"Pff, that was a storm in a teacup."

0:28:19 > 0:28:22Or it could be, "Oh, my God, it's an absolute nightmare.

0:28:22 > 0:28:23"They're everywhere."

0:28:28 > 0:28:30That's all for today.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33Join us next time to see some more villains getting their just deserts

0:28:33 > 0:28:35when they're caught red-handed.
