0:00:02 > 0:00:05Thieves will steal our cash, our cars, our valuables,

0:00:05 > 0:00:09just about anything they can get their hands on.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12But now the police are using cutting-edge technology to

0:00:12 > 0:00:13catch the bad guys.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16The CCTV is gold dust.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17Great evidence for the police.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Got to have him stopped.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Local councils, shops and businesses are fighting crime with their

0:00:23 > 0:00:24own tricks and traps.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27There's a eureka moment where you get that evidence.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31And the public are using secret cameras to make sure crooks

0:00:31 > 0:00:33get their comeuppance.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35It makes me feel so angry.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37He's paid the price, he's been dealt with.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Yes! We've got her!

0:00:39 > 0:00:43So anyone who's up to no good had better think twice,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45they might just get caught red-handed.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Today...

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Jewellery shop manager Ahmed

0:00:55 > 0:00:59is faced with an armed robber and fears for his life.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00Everything went through my mind.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03I was like, "Either die or live. I choose to live."

0:01:03 > 0:01:06But it's the robber who should be worrying

0:01:06 > 0:01:09because soon it's him who's running for his life.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11He's out, across the road now.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13He is going to be going to ground.

0:01:14 > 0:01:15Also today...

0:01:15 > 0:01:17By the banks of Loch Ness,

0:01:17 > 0:01:21a crime mystery of monstrous proportions.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Totally incomprehensible that any of our staff

0:01:23 > 0:01:24could be stealing money.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29And three of Britain's most foolish fly-tippers dump

0:01:29 > 0:01:32themselves right in it.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40If you ever get that feeling you're being watched,

0:01:40 > 0:01:41you may well be right.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44There are now millions of security cameras in the UK,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48many of which are set up by businesses to help combat crime.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Finchley in North London

0:01:56 > 0:01:59may have once been Mrs Thatcher's constituency...

0:02:01 > 0:02:03but now it has another claim to fame

0:02:03 > 0:02:06as one of Britain's burglary hot spots.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10Detectives like Manu Hanspal

0:02:10 > 0:02:15of the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad are on constant alert.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17We target commercial robberies.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21They can range from offences against post offices, banks,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23building societies,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26money exchanges to jewellery shops.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29With over half of Britain's small businesses reporting crimes

0:02:29 > 0:02:32in just two years, it's hardly surprising that

0:02:32 > 0:02:36so many have now installed security cameras to protect their premises.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40They can provide vital evidence to police teams like Manu's

0:02:40 > 0:02:44when, as happened recently, a whole area gets targeted.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Finchley High Street.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57A man enters a jeweller's and pulls out a weapon.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05He produces a wrench and sort of goes for the shopkeeper.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08The armed robber grabs the owner by the throat and forces him

0:03:08 > 0:03:10backwards.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12He's alone in that shop so, for him,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16I think that's quite a terrifying situation to be in.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Credit to him, he's dealt with it really, really well.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22The shop has a panic button, but worried that pressing it

0:03:22 > 0:03:26could panic the robber into violence, the owner coolly calms the

0:03:26 > 0:03:30intruder down by apparently agreeing to hand over some jewellery.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34He opens a cabinet but the impatient thief goes instead

0:03:34 > 0:03:37for a tray of expensive diamonds.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42The quick-thinking jeweller tells him those gems are fake and the

0:03:42 > 0:03:44burglar believes his story.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50Now the shopkeeper feels ready to make his move.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52The shopkeeper has his wits about him.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56Quite bravely he distracts him and then presses the panic button.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00The alarm echoes around the shop.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03The robber shouts angrily at the owner,

0:04:03 > 0:04:06grabs some gold necklaces and runs out.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10- ALARM - He steals seven grand of jewellery.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14By the time the police arrive, the man in black's disappeared,

0:04:14 > 0:04:17But North London hasn't seen the last of him.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26Five miles away and one week later, the armed robber strikes again.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31This time, his target is in nearby Haringey.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35That's where Ahmed helps run a jeweller's shop owned by his uncle.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39Since the age of 16 I've been working with my family.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Now I'm 27, it's like, always a family business.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46As well as using their security cameras,

0:04:46 > 0:04:50shop owners in Haringey keep an eye out for their neighbours.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53I've heard a couple of incidents happen in the street,

0:04:53 > 0:04:54and the community helping each other out.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59And Ahmed is going to need all the help he can get.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06It's lunchtime, and he's manning the shop on his own.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08A customer comes in.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11He approached me like a normal gentleman,

0:05:11 > 0:05:13he was cool, dressed up really smartly.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16He wanted to sell a thin chain, a gold chain,

0:05:16 > 0:05:19so I just gave him a price and then he said,

0:05:19 > 0:05:21"Let me just walk around to see other jewellers, as well,

0:05:21 > 0:05:25"see what they've got, as well, and I'll come back later."

0:05:25 > 0:05:29The man leaves the shop, but five minutes later, he returns.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34I gave a nice smile to him, welcomed him back in,

0:05:34 > 0:05:37but he had something in his hand, so I thought,

0:05:37 > 0:05:38you didn't have that before.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42The man tells Ahmed he has a concealed weapon.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47I was like, just scared, on that moment, it might be a gun,

0:05:47 > 0:05:49it might be a knife.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53The armed robber tries to get to the till, which is full of cash,

0:05:53 > 0:05:55but Ahmed bravely resists.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57He grabbed me, I grabbed him...

0:05:57 > 0:06:01and he then started strangling me on my neck.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05At that moment I was like, everything went through my mind,

0:06:05 > 0:06:10my family, my uncle, the jewellery, so I was like, "Either die or live."

0:06:10 > 0:06:13I was like, "Choose to live, just give something to him, just let him go."

0:06:13 > 0:06:17The robber orders Ahmed to open the safe in the back office.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19I told him I don't have any keys for the back.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22We walked to the till, I gave him some money, he said,

0:06:22 > 0:06:23"That's not enough."

0:06:23 > 0:06:26The intruder finds a bundle of banknotes Ahmed's uncle

0:06:26 > 0:06:29asked him to keep safely out of sight,

0:06:29 > 0:06:31and then takes a tray of jewellery,

0:06:31 > 0:06:34but Ahmed instinctively snatches it off him.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Something came out of me, I don't know what it was,

0:06:37 > 0:06:40just pulled the whole tray out of his hand, he was like, "What are you doing?"

0:06:40 > 0:06:42I was like, "Pulling my tray back off you. Just walk out the shop."

0:06:42 > 0:06:45The robber seizes another tray.

0:06:45 > 0:06:46Ahmed hits the panic button.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49He actually said to me, "You shouldn't have pressed that alarm."

0:06:49 > 0:06:52I was like, "What was I supposed to do? Wait for you to take the whole shop away?"

0:06:53 > 0:06:57The thief runs off and Ahmed courageously runs after him.

0:06:59 > 0:07:00I started shouting at the neighbours,

0:07:00 > 0:07:03and they actually saw what was going on and he ran over here

0:07:03 > 0:07:08to see if I'm OK and I told him I'm OK and to chase the other guy.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13Other shopkeepers take up the chase while Ahmed calls the police.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16I was in complete shock, just thinking...

0:07:17 > 0:07:20the gold is gone, the jewellery is gone, I was like,

0:07:20 > 0:07:24I need to get that back to my uncle, I need to give back the money that

0:07:24 > 0:07:28my uncle gave me to hide away and I didn't hide that away properly.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Maybe I should've pressed the alarm much more earlier,

0:07:31 > 0:07:33but at that instant, I wasn't thinking about that,

0:07:33 > 0:07:35I was thinking about living rather than dying.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39£10,000 worth of cash and jewellery have been stolen.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Over at Scotland Yard, Manu is alerted.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48He goes to the scene of the crime, where Ahmed is waiting.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52He was quite shaken up, but he was able to speak to

0:07:52 > 0:07:54me and credit to him, he's just suffered quite

0:07:54 > 0:07:57a scary incident and quite often it's the case that, as officers,

0:07:57 > 0:07:59we almost forget that,

0:07:59 > 0:08:01but he was very able to give me a lot of good detail.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03We heard the facts of it and we thought,

0:08:03 > 0:08:07that sounds very similar to one that happened the week before.

0:08:07 > 0:08:08All the facts were exactly the same,

0:08:08 > 0:08:13small independent shop on a high street where there's no other

0:08:13 > 0:08:16customers and just one member of staff, so to us, is very much was

0:08:16 > 0:08:20immediately, this has got to be the same guy doing the same thing.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25The CCTV footage confirms that the flying squad is faced

0:08:25 > 0:08:27with a dangerous armed robber.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30It's really important to catch this person, because...

0:08:30 > 0:08:32their confidence is growing,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34and their willingness to use violence

0:08:34 > 0:08:36to get money and scare people.

0:08:38 > 0:08:39Later...

0:08:39 > 0:08:42the case takes a dramatic turn -

0:08:42 > 0:08:45an urgent manhunt on the ground and from the air.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49- RADIO:- Light-skinned IC3 male, dark trousers, dark top.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51Units towards, please.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53The man who threatened terrified jewellers

0:08:53 > 0:08:55is now running scared himself.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57It was a member of the public, saw someone run out of a shop,

0:08:57 > 0:08:59run into a car.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02And he's tried to hide something in the bushes.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05What he doesn't realise is there's an eye in the sky

0:09:05 > 0:09:06following his every move.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Also coming up...

0:09:11 > 0:09:14a couple move to Scotland to start afresh

0:09:14 > 0:09:18but end up deceived by someone they count as a friend.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20It was such a betrayal of trust.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22It was unbelievable.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31The fly-tipping of refuse is antisocial,

0:09:31 > 0:09:34dirty and sometimes dangerous.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38Fortunately, fly-tippers often get caught red-handed.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41As criminals go, they are often pretty rubbish themselves.

0:09:46 > 0:09:51Welcome to the Britain's Most Foolish Fly-Tipper Awards.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54Our first contestants are from Walsall.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58This pair is tying off a huge bag of rubble to help them

0:09:58 > 0:09:59drag it from the truck.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03But what they're tying it up to is actually a large sign that says,

0:10:03 > 0:10:07"No fly-tipping." You couldn't make it up, could you?

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Then it is back flap down and off they go.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Hang on a second, fellas,

0:10:12 > 0:10:16the camera won't be able to see your number plate as you drive off.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Oh, that's much better.

0:10:19 > 0:10:24These tippers are convicted and end up £713 out of pocket.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29And the next contestant is from Burton-on-Trent.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34This fella starts off more fly-zipper than fly-tipper.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38He clearly feels in need of the loo before he gets rid of anything else.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41But he's behind a bathroom showroom and their car park is well

0:10:41 > 0:10:45covered by security cameras. Whoops-a-daisy.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Before driving off, the cheeky chap casually dumps

0:10:48 > 0:10:52a bag of rubbish right in the middle of the car park.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Instead of reporting him to the police,

0:10:54 > 0:10:59the showroom manager decides to put the video online for all to see.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03Now, that's embarrassing. Red-faced as well as red-handed.

0:11:03 > 0:11:08And our final contestant today comes from Salford.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11I reckon that van belongs to a local business.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Actually, I know it belongs to that business because it

0:11:14 > 0:11:19has got their website address and phone number plastered all over it.

0:11:19 > 0:11:20So this driver is traceable.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25And that isn't very clever when a council's spy camera is

0:11:25 > 0:11:28pointing straight at him and he's breaking the law.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32He is dumping an entire van load of rubbish, including cardboard,

0:11:32 > 0:11:34plastic and rusty nails.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40Not surprisingly, this dumb dumper gets taken to court.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44With his fines and costs totalling over £1,400,

0:11:44 > 0:11:48he's the winner of the Caught Red Handed Foolish Fly-Tipper Award.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Every year, over half a million new business ventures are started

0:11:56 > 0:11:57up in Britain.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01Their owners dream of a bright future but to achieve their

0:12:01 > 0:12:03dreams, they need help from people they can trust.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08On the beautiful banks of Loch Ness,

0:12:08 > 0:12:11a business struggles to keep its head above water.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14I couldn't understand why our tills were so low.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17Money seems to be vanishing into thin air.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21It was not sustainable, we couldn't carry on.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23But it's actually disappearing...

0:12:23 > 0:12:25into a friend's pocket.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36Loch Ness, world-famous for its legendary monster.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42Jan and Simon were drawn here by the spectacular scenery.

0:12:43 > 0:12:48The loch holds more fresh water than all the lakes in England and

0:12:48 > 0:12:52- Wales put together.- It's a beautiful part of the world, very lovely.

0:12:52 > 0:12:53Quiet.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56You just wake up in the morning and look out the window and it is

0:12:56 > 0:12:57quite special.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01I had always wanted to come and live in the Highlands because

0:13:01 > 0:13:02I had Scottish parents.

0:13:02 > 0:13:07Simon and I love being here, it's the most stunning place to live.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11They moved from Dorset six years ago and bought

0:13:11 > 0:13:13a cafe and shop in the village of Foyers

0:13:13 > 0:13:15on the south side of the loch.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18We did a tour of the north of Scotland, looking at businesses.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21This was the final one we came to look at and we couldn't

0:13:21 > 0:13:22believe our luck.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25It was just a time in our lives when we wanted

0:13:25 > 0:13:28a different challenge and this presented itself so we grabbed it.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31We were very excited when we got here.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Jan runs the Waterfall Cafe,

0:13:35 > 0:13:38while Simon looks after the shop and post office.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41They live in a flat above the business.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Simon has found that he actually really likes the craic,

0:13:45 > 0:13:46as they call it here,

0:13:46 > 0:13:50of having banter of local people and friends that come in.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54And that's every day so there is always someone that comes in and

0:13:54 > 0:13:56brings a smile to your face.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01Jan and Simon's staff have been with them since the beginning.

0:14:01 > 0:14:05It's more friends than just work colleagues.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Every place I have worked, it's always been working as a team.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12You work with people rather than for them, or they work for you.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14We work together and that's how I've always been.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17To get the business off the ground,

0:14:17 > 0:14:21Jan and Simon worked every day of the week for five years.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24But eventually everything started to tick along well.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28We got to a place where we had good staff,

0:14:28 > 0:14:32we were looking forward to being able to maybe having a regular

0:14:32 > 0:14:37day off once a week and having a holiday without worrying too much.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40But just when they think they've cracked it,

0:14:40 > 0:14:43they find their lakeside business by Loch Ness

0:14:43 > 0:14:45is nursing a monster of its own.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53It's early summer, when tourist takings should be at their peak.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56But for some reason, profits are plummeting.

0:14:56 > 0:15:02We watched year-on-year growth and then suddenly that ceased to

0:15:02 > 0:15:05be happening. We were falling back quite dramatically.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11Jan and Simon racked their brains to figure out what's going wrong.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15I put it down to there's a new business 500 yards

0:15:15 > 0:15:19down the road and obviously that was having an impact on our trade.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23But the cafe and post office seemed busier than ever.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27I just kept thinking, we are missing something here.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30I didn't suspect anyone of doing anything.

0:15:31 > 0:15:35Their Highland dream is fading fast.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37It got to the stage where we were

0:15:37 > 0:15:40right up against our overdraft limits

0:15:40 > 0:15:42and the business was not looking good at all.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46It caused a certain amount of friction between Simon and I.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49It was not sustainable, we couldn't carry on.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52The couple are on the verge of giving up,

0:15:52 > 0:15:55when suddenly there's a breakthrough.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57A member of staff gives them some disturbing news

0:15:57 > 0:16:00about another employee.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04She had seen her do a certain thing on the till,

0:16:04 > 0:16:08removing amounts of money but it wasn't showing on the till total.

0:16:10 > 0:16:11Jan and Simon are shocked.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13Over the years,

0:16:13 > 0:16:18the suspect has become not just an employee but also a close friend.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Couldn't take it in.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22Couldn't believe that this person,

0:16:22 > 0:16:26this nice person that we liked, was doing this.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30They check the till receipts and find lots of sums entered

0:16:30 > 0:16:35then cancelled afterwards. So-called "void transactions".

0:16:35 > 0:16:40This person was doing this regularly every time she worked.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44Jan suspects the employee is taking cash from customers then

0:16:44 > 0:16:47voiding the sales just before opening the till.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51Everything looks normal to the customers but the money that's

0:16:51 > 0:16:54gone into the till later ends up in the thief's pocket.

0:16:55 > 0:17:00The concept is very simple. But I hadn't realised it was possible.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04Jan realises they could use the shop's old CCTV system

0:17:04 > 0:17:07left by the previous owner to get proof.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Up until now, they'd never felt the need to use it.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12So the system has to be reactivated.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16We spent an evening with the curtains closed,

0:17:16 > 0:17:17installing the CCTV.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25Jan and Simon get ready to watch the woman's next shift.

0:17:25 > 0:17:30We just open as usual and pretend like nothing is happening.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32We still weren't 100% at that point.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34You really didn't want to believe...

0:17:34 > 0:17:37- No.- ..that that's what was happening.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39We needed to see it with our own eyes.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43The prime suspect arrives at work.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49It doesn't take long before the mystery of the missing money

0:17:49 > 0:17:53is solved. A customer hands over the cash.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57The woman voids the transaction then opens the till.

0:17:58 > 0:17:59Watch her left hand.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03There. Did you spot it? Here's a replay.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08She gets change out of the till and, at the same time,

0:18:08 > 0:18:11grabs a banknote in her left hand and pockets it.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17You can clearly see the note in her hand, going into her back pocket.

0:18:18 > 0:18:23- Which... Which you just felt so sick, didn't you?- Yes.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27- That you'd actually seen that happen.- Yes.- It is quite shocking.

0:18:28 > 0:18:32To me, totally incomprehensible that any of our staff could be

0:18:32 > 0:18:35stealing money. It's staggering.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37There are lots of clips on here

0:18:37 > 0:18:39where everyone is laughing and joking.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43I thought we were a very happy band but...no.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Jan's keen to call the police straightaway,

0:18:47 > 0:18:49but Simon wants more evidence.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52They decide to keep the camera running for a week.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56The stress was unbelievable.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59And for this person to keep smiling and laughing...

0:19:00 > 0:19:02..and...

0:19:02 > 0:19:06It was such a betrayal of trust. It was unbelievable.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11And they see how that trust has been betrayed.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13Anyone could see her at any time.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17But she's so slick and quick at doing it,

0:19:17 > 0:19:20that, actually, you don't believe that you've just seen that.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22Now they have enough evidence,

0:19:22 > 0:19:25they hand over the recordings to the police

0:19:25 > 0:19:27and give the thief her marching orders.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35Their light-fingered former friend pleaded guilty to theft

0:19:35 > 0:19:39and in court was sentenced to 100 hours' community service.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Jan and Simon feel that although their business

0:19:47 > 0:19:49was on the low road for a while,

0:19:49 > 0:19:51they can now take the high road again.

0:19:51 > 0:19:55It was very apparent immediately after this person left

0:19:55 > 0:19:59that the tills went back to taking what they should be taking.

0:19:59 > 0:20:00Yeah, there was a lot of relief.

0:20:01 > 0:20:06They're now looking forward to getting their lives back on track.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08That's it. It's in the past.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10We're going to move on now

0:20:10 > 0:20:14and we are just going to try and continue to build our business

0:20:14 > 0:20:16and to enjoy our life here.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23Dishonesty can be very hard to prove.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26Thieves are often very good at covering their tracks.

0:20:26 > 0:20:27So what can people do

0:20:27 > 0:20:30if they suspect someone is stealing from them?

0:20:30 > 0:20:34The most important thing is that we are able to secure the evidence

0:20:34 > 0:20:37to be able to demonstrate the crime took place.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39So we can't rely on hearsay evidence.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42It's the cold, hard facts

0:20:42 > 0:20:44that we will then be able to present a case

0:20:44 > 0:20:46to the Crown Prosecution Service.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48It's really important that we can

0:20:48 > 0:20:52identify the stolen cash, so to speak, so there are things like

0:20:52 > 0:20:55DNA-encoded liquid that we can use, but even if you haven't got that,

0:20:55 > 0:20:59just marking the notes with your initials or something that means

0:20:59 > 0:21:02you can later establish that they are the notes taken from your till.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04If you find yourself in a situation

0:21:04 > 0:21:07where you've caught the suspect red-handed

0:21:07 > 0:21:09and they're stealing literally from under your nose

0:21:09 > 0:21:12then you could confront them,

0:21:12 > 0:21:14but I would always advise not to do that alone.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17Situations like this can quickly escalate,

0:21:17 > 0:21:21and it's just not worth putting yourself or your property at risk.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23It's really important not to give the game away,

0:21:23 > 0:21:26not to challenge the individual at an early stage.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28It's important to gather the evidence

0:21:28 > 0:21:32so that when you do approach that person, or the police do it,

0:21:32 > 0:21:34then really they're caught by surprise.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40This hole-in-the-wall gang

0:21:40 > 0:21:43think they can fool an automatic cash machine.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47But as they're about to find out, they can't fool the cops.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55It's something we're all used to doing.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58We put our PIN number in a cash machine and money comes out.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03But these villains in Plymouth think they've got an idea

0:22:03 > 0:22:05how to beat the machine.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08They put a home-made device into the slot where notes are dispensed

0:22:08 > 0:22:10and they move away.

0:22:10 > 0:22:14It's not exactly hi-tech, and they've made a schoolboy error -

0:22:14 > 0:22:17their every move is being caught on camera.

0:22:18 > 0:22:22A customer comes along and tries to withdraw their cash,

0:22:22 > 0:22:24but the hidden device blocks their notes.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26The customer waits...

0:22:27 > 0:22:28..and waits...

0:22:29 > 0:22:31..and waits.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36And then walks off, thinking the machine is faulty.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39And we can guess what happens next, right?

0:22:39 > 0:22:42The thieves return, pull out their device,

0:22:42 > 0:22:44and extract the money.

0:22:44 > 0:22:48The thieves may have got away with it this time,

0:22:48 > 0:22:50but the police are wise to their little game

0:22:50 > 0:22:52and stake out cashpoints in the area

0:22:52 > 0:22:55to try and catch the criminals in the act.

0:22:55 > 0:22:56They wait...

0:22:57 > 0:22:59..and wait...

0:22:59 > 0:23:00and wait,

0:23:00 > 0:23:02but to no avail.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Before calling it a day,

0:23:04 > 0:23:07they go for a quick bite to eat across the road.

0:23:07 > 0:23:08When out of the window,

0:23:08 > 0:23:12they spot some suspicious men loitering next to an ATM.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16The police pounce further down the road,

0:23:16 > 0:23:18arrest them, find their DIY device,

0:23:18 > 0:23:21and haul them off to the station.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23Job done.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26And a seven-month stretch awaits.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36Back to North London,

0:23:36 > 0:23:38where the Met are investigating

0:23:38 > 0:23:41the two armed raids on jewellery shops in a week.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44One of the victims, Ahmed, resisted the robber -

0:23:44 > 0:23:45even argued with him -

0:23:45 > 0:23:49but is still trying to come to terms with what happened.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52I had so many scenarios built up in my head,

0:23:52 > 0:23:54I could have done this, I could have done that,

0:23:54 > 0:23:57and my director, who's my uncle, he actually said,

0:23:57 > 0:23:59"Forget the money, forget the jewellery - if you're fine,

0:23:59 > 0:24:01"that's what matters to us anyway."

0:24:03 > 0:24:08DC Manu Hanspal of the Met's Flying Squad is leading the investigation.

0:24:09 > 0:24:13It's Manu who linked the two armed robberies.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16To us, this has got to be the same guy doing the same thing.

0:24:16 > 0:24:17He's posed as a customer,

0:24:17 > 0:24:20and he's then returned, threatened the shopkeeper.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23The CCTV footage will prove critical

0:24:23 > 0:24:26in identifying this dangerous robber.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29I can't undersell the value of really good quality CCTV.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32It's clearly the same person.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35And Manu is about to make a breakthrough,

0:24:35 > 0:24:38thanks to an eagle-eyed neighbour of Ahmed's.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41It was a member of the public, without hesitating,

0:24:41 > 0:24:43saw something they thought was suspicious,

0:24:43 > 0:24:44saw someone run out of a shop,

0:24:44 > 0:24:47run into a car, and then drive away at speed,

0:24:47 > 0:24:50and they gave us the description, what they were wearing,

0:24:50 > 0:24:52the car they got into and the registration.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54It's an important lead.

0:24:54 > 0:24:59The licence plate is registered to 28-year-old Joel Law.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02We circulated that amongst all the police units

0:25:02 > 0:25:03on the police national computer.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07Later that week, traffic cops spot Law's car,

0:25:07 > 0:25:08and it looks like he's the driver.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10The officers choose the best tactic,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13which is just to ask it to stop, flash your lights,

0:25:13 > 0:25:15but he's also driven off.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18It's the start of a dramatic chase.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21A dangerous driver needs stopping, fast,

0:25:21 > 0:25:25so a police helicopter is called in to help keep him in sight.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29The fugitive has no idea a camera is tracking his every move,

0:25:29 > 0:25:34and the footage of his reckless driving can be used as evidence.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37He's completely reckless - taking the narrowest of gaps between cars,

0:25:37 > 0:25:39he's not accounting for someone walking out.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43- RADIO:- He's mounted the pavement. - The fugitive is cornered.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46His only option is to try and escape on foot.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49- RADIO:- He's out, across the road now into industrial premises.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51He's going to be going to ground.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54Thermal imaging is used to keep track of the runner.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57Received. It's going to be a decamp into Manor Road,

0:25:57 > 0:25:58junction Mays Lane.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00Manor Road, Mays Lane.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03Light-skinned IC3 male, dark trousers, dark top.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05Units towards, please.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08Officers on foot are directed to the fugitive.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10Echo Zero received.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12He's in a back garden, Leeside.

0:26:12 > 0:26:15He's gone to ground between two houses.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17Left on to the residential street.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20If you can see the white gate to the right,

0:26:20 > 0:26:22he's just behind that.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24He appears to be talking on his mobile phone,

0:26:24 > 0:26:26possibly asking someone to come and help.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29But it's too late for that.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31I think he's surrendering to local officers.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34Stand by, I'll get you an address.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36We've got the male, we've got the male.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42It is Joel Law, Manu's main suspect.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44It was just good policing, good teamwork.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47Their skills have meant that chase has resulted in no-one being injured

0:26:47 > 0:26:49and no damage being caused and him being arrested.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52Manu studies the helicopter footage

0:26:52 > 0:26:55and sees Law throw an object into a bush.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58In the second robbery he was wearing a pair of sunglasses.

0:26:58 > 0:27:02Funnily enough, he seemed to throw away a pair of sunglasses.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06Maybe they're his favourite shades, and he's carefully throwing them

0:27:06 > 0:27:08somewhere he hopes to find them later.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10Well, he doesn't - but the police do.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13The sunglasses are crucial evidence.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15Of all the things you chuck away

0:27:15 > 0:27:16when you're being chased by the police,

0:27:16 > 0:27:18why would you throw a pair of sunglasses?

0:27:18 > 0:27:21They're the sunglasses you used in that robbery.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25When we present all that information, what could he say?

0:27:28 > 0:27:31Law realised there was no escape,

0:27:31 > 0:27:33and pleaded guilty when he appeared in court.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38He was sentenced to five years and four months in prison.

0:27:41 > 0:27:47I was actually...amazed at the speed that he actually was arrested -

0:27:47 > 0:27:50he was caught two days later. That just made me happy,

0:27:50 > 0:27:52knowing that he's not going to give anyone else

0:27:52 > 0:27:54the same aggravation he caused us.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57With the help of police, the public and technology,

0:27:57 > 0:28:00DC Hanspal got his man.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03This case just proves that the public, shopkeepers -

0:28:03 > 0:28:06if we look after each other and talk to the police,

0:28:06 > 0:28:09we can prevent these things and obviously catch the person.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17That's all for today. Join us next time

0:28:17 > 0:28:20to see some more villains getting their just deserts,

0:28:20 > 0:28:23when they're caught red-handed.
