0:00:02 > 0:00:05Thieves will steal our cash, our cars, our valuables,
0:00:05 > 0:00:07just about anything they can get their hands on.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12But now the police are using cutting-edge technology to catch the
0:00:12 > 0:00:15- bad guys.- We want to make sure we've got a concrete case.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17Enough evidence to convict at court.
0:00:17 > 0:00:20Local councils, shops and businesses
0:00:20 > 0:00:23are fighting crime with their own tricks and traps.
0:00:23 > 0:00:27It's just unbelievable that she thinks she can get away with this.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29And the public are using secret cameras,
0:00:29 > 0:00:32to make sure the crooks get their comeuppance.
0:00:32 > 0:00:35Fair means or foul, I was going to get rid of him.
0:00:35 > 0:00:36I thought, "Oh, we've got her!"
0:00:36 > 0:00:40And I was so happy. Thank God!
0:00:40 > 0:00:44So, anyone who is up to no good had better think twice.
0:00:44 > 0:00:46They might just get Caught Red Handed.
0:00:50 > 0:00:52Today, at a jeweller's,
0:00:52 > 0:00:56a man walks in, wearing a comical wig and sunglasses,
0:00:56 > 0:00:59but he turns deadly serious -
0:00:59 > 0:01:03pointing a gun at terrified staff and demanding they open the safe.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06But it's on a time lock, and shop owner Karen
0:01:06 > 0:01:08has to tell the gunman they can't open it.
0:01:08 > 0:01:12He said, "I don't believe you." I just had a feeling of dread.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15Cos you really don't know if he's going to shoot you.
0:01:16 > 0:01:21Also today - a hard-hearted burglar steals from single mum Lara.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24It was a terrible feeling. This is our sanctuary.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27He even ransacks her children's bedrooms.
0:01:27 > 0:01:31All my room had been trashed and all my pound coins had been taken.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33I felt really sad.
0:01:33 > 0:01:38But Max is a computer whiz-kid, and he starts an online manhunt.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42Also later - Anne gets a nasty surprise...
0:01:44 > 0:01:46..when her equestrian equipment shop is burgled.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52And another surprise when the thief returns and leaves a mysterious
0:01:52 > 0:01:57- calling card.- Some liquid, that we realised was cooking oil,
0:01:57 > 0:02:01- from the smell of it.- But his bizarre antics are being watched.
0:02:02 > 0:02:06The security company across the road is bristling with cameras.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14Of all the shops in a typical high street,
0:02:14 > 0:02:17jeweller's are especially tempting for robbers.
0:02:17 > 0:02:20They can see high-value items on display that look very easily
0:02:20 > 0:02:23accessible. But often jewellers aren't as straightforward to rob
0:02:23 > 0:02:25as they appear.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33In the centre of Southport, a seaside town near Liverpool,
0:02:33 > 0:02:35Karen runs a jeweller's.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39She had been an employee at the store, but two years ago was offered
0:02:39 > 0:02:43the chance to take it over when the previous owner retired.
0:02:43 > 0:02:47I wasn't sure, but it had been a good business for 30 years, and I
0:02:47 > 0:02:51thought, "At my age, where am I going to get another job from?"
0:02:51 > 0:02:53So I thought, "I'll take the chance."
0:02:53 > 0:02:57In the beginning, Karen found being the boss a challenge.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00Suddenly you were on the other side and it's, you've got all that
0:03:00 > 0:03:04responsibility and then you've got staff to look after.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06It is daunting.
0:03:06 > 0:03:10Karen added her own extra sparkle to the business by totally refurbishing
0:03:10 > 0:03:13- the store.- You know, it's nice that people come in and they're buying
0:03:13 > 0:03:17gifts for someone and it's all surprise gifts,
0:03:17 > 0:03:19and people come in and buy engagement rings, and they're going
0:03:19 > 0:03:22out with a smile on their face.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25But one day in the shop, Karen and a colleague have a
0:03:25 > 0:03:29terrifying experience that has them fearing for their lives.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36It's a Saturday morning in May.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39The shop's security cameras are running as Karen and a colleague
0:03:39 > 0:03:41open up.
0:03:41 > 0:03:45Nearly all their expensive stock is kept in safes overnight,
0:03:45 > 0:03:49which they can't open yet, as they are fitted with time delay locks.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53There's nothing we can do until that timer comes on.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56While they wait, Karen chats with her colleague.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59After a few minutes,
0:03:59 > 0:04:02a man approaches the store and starts looking in the window.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06He's wearing sunglasses and has an unusual hairstyle.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10He rings the door's buzzer.
0:04:11 > 0:04:13Karen's pet dog, Stanley, goes to take a look.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17As in many jewellery shops, for security,
0:04:17 > 0:04:20customers have to be let in by staff pressing a button.
0:04:20 > 0:04:22Saturdays can be a busy day,
0:04:22 > 0:04:25when we can have people coming in quite early in the morning.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29Karen's colleague gets ready to greet the man,
0:04:29 > 0:04:32but she's about to go through an experience she still doesn't wish to
0:04:32 > 0:04:34talk about to this day.
0:04:34 > 0:04:38Karen's standing just off camera, in the corner of the room.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42Even at that stage, I didn't suspect anything.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46Suddenly, everything changes.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50The next thing is, he just pulled the gun out.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54At gunpoint, the man then forces the terrified shop assistant and Karen
0:04:54 > 0:04:57towards the back of the shop.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00I just had a feeling of dread.
0:05:00 > 0:05:06My legs started shaking and I just felt my heart really beating fast.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09The armed man ordered Karen to open the office safe.
0:05:10 > 0:05:14I knew that we couldn't do anything, and my colleague was saying,
0:05:14 > 0:05:17"We can't open the safe, it's on a time delay."
0:05:17 > 0:05:20She was, sort of, more or less screaming this at him.
0:05:20 > 0:05:22He said, "I don't believe you. You open the safe."
0:05:22 > 0:05:24And I just didn't know what to do.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27And my dog was sort of round his feet, and I'm thinking,
0:05:27 > 0:05:29"I hope he doesn't shoot my dog."
0:05:30 > 0:05:33Karen is standing near a panic button that could send an alarm to
0:05:33 > 0:05:35the police.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38I was ten inches away, but I just didn't do it,
0:05:38 > 0:05:41because I think I was just in shock,
0:05:41 > 0:05:45and I was just so fixated on looking at the gun,
0:05:45 > 0:05:48cos you really don't know if he's going to shoot you.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51But then the gunman realises they're telling the truth.
0:05:51 > 0:05:53He decides to leave,
0:05:53 > 0:05:56bizarrely making no attempt to steal any of the jewellery on display in
0:05:56 > 0:06:01the shop. He frogmarches Karen over to the door, which has automatically
0:06:01 > 0:06:03locked, and demands she unlocks it.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06I just opened the door and he went out.
0:06:07 > 0:06:12The robber hides his gun to avoid attention and briskly walks away.
0:06:12 > 0:06:16Nothing has been stolen from Karen's jewellers, and she and her
0:06:16 > 0:06:20colleague have been left physically unharmed, but shock soon sets in.
0:06:20 > 0:06:22My legs buckled from underneath me.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24I had to sit down on a chair.
0:06:26 > 0:06:29They phone the police, who arrive within minutes.
0:06:29 > 0:06:31A dangerous armed man is at large,
0:06:31 > 0:06:35but there's no immediate evidence to help the officers identify the
0:06:35 > 0:06:38- robber.- He'd used his arm to get through the door,
0:06:38 > 0:06:41so there was no fingerprints anywhere.
0:06:41 > 0:06:44The forensics couldn't find anything.
0:06:44 > 0:06:46So they check Karen's CCTV,
0:06:46 > 0:06:51but realise the man is wearing a wig to disguise his identity.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53I didn't see that he had a wig on.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57I think it's cos I was just so busy looking at the gun.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03But Karen's security cameras still provide a breakthrough.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06One of them shows that the robber didn't escape on foot -
0:07:06 > 0:07:07he had a getaway car.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12As he's gone out the door, he's walked out, he's just gone to his
0:07:12 > 0:07:15car with a bag, and people are just carrying on as normal.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18The pictures are clear enough to
0:07:18 > 0:07:21read the registration number of the car.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24When police run a check, they find out it's stolen.
0:07:24 > 0:07:28They track the car's movement and put out an appeal for information.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30Soon they get a name,
0:07:30 > 0:07:32but the suspect goes into hiding.
0:07:33 > 0:07:35Several weeks pass as the police search for him.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40Karen and her colleague struggle to
0:07:40 > 0:07:42come to terms with what's happened.
0:07:42 > 0:07:45I felt responsible for my colleague who was going through it.
0:07:45 > 0:07:49She was not sleeping and she was having nightmares over it.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52She handed her notice in because she just felt that she couldn't work
0:07:52 > 0:07:53here any more.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59But two months after the attempted robbery, there's good news -
0:07:59 > 0:08:03the police find the main suspect and bring him in for questioning.
0:08:03 > 0:08:07Karen and her colleague are asked to attend a video identity parade.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11It was really difficult to pick him out.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15At the time, I looked at the gun, I didn't look at anything else.
0:08:15 > 0:08:19Fortunately, my colleague managed to pick him out.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23After being identified, the suspect admits to the crime.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26He was actually using an imitation weapon, but his terrified victims
0:08:26 > 0:08:30weren't to know that when he pointed it at them.
0:08:30 > 0:08:31It's changed everything. You know,
0:08:31 > 0:08:36I lost a member of staff that I had been friendly with for five or six years.
0:08:36 > 0:08:40You're just trying to earn a living. You do work hard for it, and he can
0:08:40 > 0:08:43just come in with a gun and think he's just going to take whatever he
0:08:43 > 0:08:45can. That's, you know, disgusting.
0:08:46 > 0:08:50Because of the psychological impact on victims like Karen and her
0:08:50 > 0:08:54colleague, strong punishments are given to criminals using fake guns.
0:08:56 > 0:09:00In court, the man was convicted of attempted robbery,
0:09:00 > 0:09:04having an imitation weapon and taking a car without consent.
0:09:04 > 0:09:07He was sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15It's taken a while, but Karen has finally got over the ordeal.
0:09:15 > 0:09:19I didn't want him to affect me, I just wanted to carry on.
0:09:19 > 0:09:23I still enjoy that buzz of going in and people coming through the door.
0:09:23 > 0:09:25I still enjoy owning the business.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27And I'm hoping that, you know,
0:09:27 > 0:09:30we're going to be here for many years to come.
0:09:41 > 0:09:45A masked man, holding a screwdriver, walks into a newsagents run by an
0:09:45 > 0:09:49elderly couple, and demands money from the 74-year-old woman behind
0:09:49 > 0:09:53the counter. But if he thinks she's going to be a soft touch, he's
0:09:53 > 0:09:56mistaken. She refuses to give him a penny.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00So he grabs the whole till.
0:10:00 > 0:10:03The woman doesn't take kindly to this, so she bravely
0:10:03 > 0:10:07gives him a lot of stick, and the robber heads for the door.
0:10:08 > 0:10:11But then he comes up against her husband.
0:10:12 > 0:10:17He's also in his 70s, and he's in no mood to negotiate either.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19In a move a wrestler would be proud of,
0:10:19 > 0:10:22the shopkeeper grapples the robber to the ground.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28After being body-slammed by a senior citizen,
0:10:28 > 0:10:32the red-faced robber gives up and runs off, empty-handed.
0:10:32 > 0:10:36The man was later caught and sentenced to five years in prison
0:10:36 > 0:10:38for this and another offence.
0:10:38 > 0:10:41So he'll have lots of time to regret trying to take on this
0:10:41 > 0:10:44have-a-go gran and grandad.
0:10:51 > 0:10:55In West Sussex, an intruder's on a smash... GLASS SHATTERS
0:10:55 > 0:10:58..and-grab raid on a family home.
0:10:58 > 0:11:01He even steals money from the kids' piggy banks!
0:11:03 > 0:11:06He then moves on to a nearby cottage.
0:11:06 > 0:11:08But the people of Bognor band together,
0:11:08 > 0:11:12and this burglar's on borrowed time.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21Clymping is a village near Bognor Regis on the south coast of England.
0:11:21 > 0:11:25Single mum Lara lives here with her children.
0:11:25 > 0:11:29I've now been in my current house for almost 14 years.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31It's got a lot of memories.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33Lara has three children -
0:11:33 > 0:11:37Harry, who's 17, Max, 13, and six-year-old Orla.
0:11:38 > 0:11:41The family are coming through a difficult time.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44My parents have recently split up.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46It was about 18 months ago,
0:11:46 > 0:11:48my husband and I separated.
0:11:48 > 0:11:50Yeah, so that's a very sad thing
0:11:50 > 0:11:54that we, as family, we're having to face.
0:11:55 > 0:11:57As well as watching out for each other,
0:11:57 > 0:12:01Lara's brought up her children to look after their pounds and pennies.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04I've always tried to encourage them to save
0:12:04 > 0:12:06rather than just to spend.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09The children have money boxes in their rooms, and hard-working Max
0:12:09 > 0:12:12keeps his regularly filled.
0:12:12 > 0:12:15I earned my money from my grandma.
0:12:15 > 0:12:19He'll mow her grass, clean cars, mow the grass here.
0:12:19 > 0:12:23For peace of mind, Lara's recently installed a security camera inside
0:12:23 > 0:12:28- the house.- Now that I'm on my own, there are times that, you know,
0:12:28 > 0:12:30sometimes you don't always feel that safe any more.
0:12:30 > 0:12:34It turns out Lara is right to feel vulnerable,
0:12:34 > 0:12:36when a burglar breaks into her family home.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42It's a summer's day. Max is at school,
0:12:42 > 0:12:46but Orla has already broken up and Lara is taking her to her grandma's.
0:12:48 > 0:12:52Back at home, the security camera is recording, and suddenly it picks up
0:12:52 > 0:12:55the sound of shattering glass. GLASS SHATTERS
0:12:56 > 0:13:01This man has used a brick lying on Lara's drive to smash the patio door
0:13:01 > 0:13:03and break in.
0:13:05 > 0:13:09After a few minutes, the man returns and strolls out the way he came in.
0:13:13 > 0:13:17Later that afternoon, Lara returns home with Max.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20Orla is still at her grandma's.
0:13:20 > 0:13:24As we went into the kitchen, we both saw all the glass on the floor.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30As I stood there, I started to realise that we had been burgled,
0:13:30 > 0:13:33and that feeling of panic filled me.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35While Lara checks downstairs,
0:13:35 > 0:13:39Max runs up to his bedroom and is shocked by what he finds.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43My drawers were open, cupboards were open.
0:13:43 > 0:13:47I have a silver mug, and I had quite a lot of money in there,
0:13:47 > 0:13:49so that had all been taken.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53I went into my mum's room and her drawers had been opened.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57And then I checked my sister's room. She has about four or five money
0:13:57 > 0:14:00boxes, and they'd all been smashed.
0:14:00 > 0:14:04Max shouts to his mum to come upstairs, where Lara finds her
0:14:04 > 0:14:08jewellery box raided and valuables her dad gave her missing.
0:14:08 > 0:14:13He died a couple of years ago. That was my last link to him, really.
0:14:13 > 0:14:18Lara accesses the CCTV cameras' recordings on her mobile.
0:14:18 > 0:14:22She and Max are horrified to see a burglar in their home.
0:14:22 > 0:14:26It was a terrible feeling, and it actually reduced us both to tears,
0:14:26 > 0:14:30really, because it was all a bit overwhelming.
0:14:30 > 0:14:33Max calls 999, and while they wait for the police,
0:14:33 > 0:14:38Orla comes back and is distraught to find her precious money boxes in
0:14:38 > 0:14:39pieces on the floor.
0:14:40 > 0:14:43My grandma gave it to me.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45I felt really sad.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48This is our sanctuary.
0:14:48 > 0:14:52We should feel at our most safe and comfortable at home.
0:14:52 > 0:14:57It makes you feel really angry, that someone can have that effect.
0:14:57 > 0:15:02£150 has been stolen from the children, and £2,500 worth of
0:15:02 > 0:15:05jewellery from Lara. But the good news for the family is their
0:15:05 > 0:15:08security camera has captured an image of the burglar.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10The police take a copy,
0:15:10 > 0:15:12and Max, who's a whiz when it comes to computers,
0:15:12 > 0:15:14puts the footage online.
0:15:14 > 0:15:18Within 20 minutes, I had people texting me.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21It got picked up, and then it was spread, and then more and more
0:15:21 > 0:15:25- people, you know, shared it.- I think I had about 57,000 shares.
0:15:25 > 0:15:29I even had pictures of people coming through that looked similar to him,
0:15:29 > 0:15:31even with names that we gave the police.
0:15:33 > 0:15:37And the police soon confirm their chief suspect is one of those names,
0:15:37 > 0:15:39but his whereabouts are unknown.
0:15:39 > 0:15:41Not for long, though.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45He's about to target another home in the area.
0:15:45 > 0:15:47This cottage belongs to Karl,
0:15:47 > 0:15:51who recently spent his life savings renovating the building.
0:15:51 > 0:15:55Karl works as an IT director, so it's not surprising he's
0:15:55 > 0:15:59installed hi-tech cameras to protect his new home.
0:15:59 > 0:16:02If I am still at work or out at the shops or even out of the country,
0:16:02 > 0:16:06I receive a small alert to say there's been motion detected.
0:16:06 > 0:16:08And today, while he's at work...
0:16:08 > 0:16:12Karl's cameras pick up a face we now recognise -
0:16:12 > 0:16:16the man who broke into Lara's house is now in Karl's back garden!
0:16:17 > 0:16:19He tries a door handle...
0:16:20 > 0:16:23but it's locked securely.
0:16:23 > 0:16:26The intruder spends the next few minutes pacing up and down,
0:16:26 > 0:16:28looking through the windows,
0:16:28 > 0:16:31but they're double-glazed and hard to break.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33There's nothing lying around to smash them with.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35He decides to leave.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40An exterior camera is triggered as he walks away...
0:16:42 > 0:16:45and an alert is sent to Karl's phone at work.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47He sees what's just happened.
0:16:47 > 0:16:53I was absolutely astonished and angry and thought, "How dare you?!"
0:16:53 > 0:16:57I am so pleased, on this occasion, that I had those cameras in place.
0:16:57 > 0:17:00He could have actually just been casing the joint with the intent to
0:17:00 > 0:17:02come back the next day, the next week, who knows?
0:17:02 > 0:17:07Karl's camera has captured an even clearer image of the man than Lara's.
0:17:07 > 0:17:11You can see him, almost looking into the camera as he goes out. He's very distinctive.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13You can see this grey jacket, red and white emblem,
0:17:13 > 0:17:17the white beanie hat, and the sunglasses there, and that's the point that I thought,
0:17:17 > 0:17:21"Absolutely, this is enough to be able to track this person down."
0:17:21 > 0:17:25Karl takes a close look at the man's image and starts to get a sense of
0:17:25 > 0:17:28- deja vu.- There's just something niggling at my mind to say,
0:17:28 > 0:17:31"I think I've seen this guy somewhere before."
0:17:31 > 0:17:34Then Karl remembers seeing the footage of a recent local burglary
0:17:34 > 0:17:36that had been shared online -
0:17:36 > 0:17:39the video Max posted.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42It was quite evident to me that this was the same person that was wanted
0:17:42 > 0:17:43by the police.
0:17:43 > 0:17:47Karl also puts his own screenshots of the intruder on Bognor's social
0:17:47 > 0:17:49media sites.
0:17:49 > 0:17:53He soon receives multiple messages naming the suspect and is
0:17:53 > 0:17:56even sent a link to the man's Facebook profile.
0:17:56 > 0:18:00I was just absolutely astonished to find that he's wearing the same
0:18:00 > 0:18:02sunglasses, the same beanie hat
0:18:02 > 0:18:05that he was wearing when he attempted to
0:18:05 > 0:18:07gain entry to our place.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10Having been caught on camera twice in a matter of weeks,
0:18:10 > 0:18:13this burglar is really starting to bother Bognor.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16The whole community came together to be able to help
0:18:16 > 0:18:17effectively hunt this person down.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22People start contacting Karl with direct sightings of the suspect.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28Somebody had private messaged me to say they'd just seen the guy wearing
0:18:28 > 0:18:31exactly the same clothes, going to a large supermarket.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33There were other people commenting on the post,
0:18:33 > 0:18:36to say that they'd seen him again in the Bognor Regis area.
0:18:37 > 0:18:39Messages about the fugitive keep
0:18:39 > 0:18:41flooding in from other Bognor residents.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46I then received a note from somebody to say that she had just seen the
0:18:46 > 0:18:50man riding his bike down a particular road in Bognor Regis.
0:18:50 > 0:18:55Every report Karl gets, he passes on to the police, and soon
0:18:55 > 0:18:57they catch up with the suspect.
0:18:57 > 0:19:00Within about three hours, I received a call from them to say that,
0:19:00 > 0:19:03"We've just arrested your man," and I was absolutely delighted.
0:19:04 > 0:19:07And the Bognor online community is delighted, too.
0:19:10 > 0:19:14In court, the man pleaded guilty to burglary and attempted burglary.
0:19:14 > 0:19:18Because he was a repeat offender, he was jailed for three years.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25Following the break-in,
0:19:25 > 0:19:28Lara has increased security at the family home even further.
0:19:28 > 0:19:33Max was thrilled that the online search for the man he started had
0:19:33 > 0:19:37- ended in success.- I did feel a bit proud I'd helped the police.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40He's also learned a valuable lesson.
0:19:40 > 0:19:44When I do get a large amount, straight in my bank account,
0:19:44 > 0:19:47so then nobody can take it again,
0:19:47 > 0:19:49hopefully.
0:19:55 > 0:19:58We just seen a house being broken into, using a brick that was lying
0:19:58 > 0:20:01around. Just like this.
0:20:01 > 0:20:03But another house, with nothing at all around for a burglar to use,
0:20:03 > 0:20:05being left alone.
0:20:05 > 0:20:08So what can we do to make it harder for burglars?
0:20:08 > 0:20:13For example, they may pull a wheelie bin under a higher window to gain
0:20:13 > 0:20:14access to a property.
0:20:14 > 0:20:18So my advice is to be just mindful of where you keep your wheelie bins,
0:20:18 > 0:20:20or secure them, if you can.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22Put obstacles in the way of burglars trying to get to your house.
0:20:22 > 0:20:25It might be a gravel driveway, where you can hear them approaching.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28It might be sharp bushes under windows, which are unpleasant to
0:20:28 > 0:20:31- fall in.- If you put shutters, Venetian blinds,
0:20:31 > 0:20:34or vertical blinds behind your patio doors,
0:20:34 > 0:20:37it makes it more difficult for the burglar wanting to get into the
0:20:37 > 0:20:39premises, and it takes more time to get out.
0:20:39 > 0:20:41You need to make your house an
0:20:41 > 0:20:43impenetrable fortress from the kerb-side.
0:20:43 > 0:20:45You need to put visual deterrents
0:20:45 > 0:20:47which put people off breaking into your homes.
0:20:47 > 0:20:50That could be even dummies, such as cameras, such as alarm boxes.
0:20:50 > 0:20:53They don't even necessarily need to work, as long as they look real.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55If your house looks occupied,
0:20:55 > 0:20:58then that increases the risk to that criminal of being caught.
0:20:58 > 0:21:02So, leaving automatic lights on, leaving a radio on.
0:21:02 > 0:21:05Anything you can do to make your house look occupied will increase
0:21:05 > 0:21:08the level of risk within that criminal's mind.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15A burglar smashes his way into a shop which sells horse riding
0:21:15 > 0:21:20equipment. He's disguised himself with a Mexican bandit moustache,
0:21:20 > 0:21:23straight out of the movies.
0:21:23 > 0:21:27The outlaw makes off with the till's takings...
0:21:27 > 0:21:30..but little does he know there's a posse on his trail.
0:21:39 > 0:21:42The town of Guiseley in West Yorkshire is surrounded by
0:21:42 > 0:21:46countryside that's excellent for horse riding.
0:21:46 > 0:21:49Anne loves horses so much, she owns two of them,
0:21:49 > 0:21:52and she runs an equestrian shop in the town with the help of her
0:21:52 > 0:21:55husband, Kieran.
0:21:55 > 0:21:58I did have riding lessons as a kid, but I didn't have a pony.
0:21:58 > 0:21:59It was far too expensive.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02So it wasn't until I was an adult, I thought,
0:22:02 > 0:22:04"I'd like to get back into riding."
0:22:04 > 0:22:07Anne used to be an accountant.
0:22:07 > 0:22:11It was a little while after the crash that there was a round of
0:22:11 > 0:22:15redundancies where I worked, and unfortunately I got the...
0:22:15 > 0:22:17It was a tough time,
0:22:17 > 0:22:20but it gave Anne the opportunity to start a new business.
0:22:20 > 0:22:22I know a lot of horsey people,
0:22:22 > 0:22:26and there wasn't a shop like this within a half-hour drive.
0:22:26 > 0:22:30So I thought it might be a good way of spending my redundancy money.
0:22:30 > 0:22:33Anne knew running the shop wouldn't be an easy ride,
0:22:33 > 0:22:37but she's about to face a problem she hadn't seen coming -
0:22:37 > 0:22:39a burglary in broad daylight.
0:22:43 > 0:22:45It's early one summer's morning,
0:22:45 > 0:22:48and Anne and Kieran are woken by a call on her mobile.
0:22:48 > 0:22:50MOBILE PHONE RINGS
0:22:50 > 0:22:54It was the alarm company to say that the alarm had gone off in the shop.
0:22:54 > 0:22:57There's been a break-in. Kieran makes his way to the shop.
0:22:57 > 0:23:01Anne will follow as soon as she's fed their dogs.
0:23:01 > 0:23:04Kieran's worried that burglars could still be there.
0:23:04 > 0:23:07I think it's probably best not to confront these people,
0:23:07 > 0:23:09given my karate skills...
0:23:09 > 0:23:13- Maybe not. - BURGLAR ALARM
0:23:13 > 0:23:16Kieran arrives to see a hole has been smashed through one of the
0:23:16 > 0:23:19windows, and there's a large stone next to it on the pavement.
0:23:19 > 0:23:22I suspected perhaps some vandalism,
0:23:22 > 0:23:25then I went into the shop and realised it was more than that.
0:23:26 > 0:23:29After checking no intruders are still in the building,
0:23:29 > 0:23:34Kieran sees that the cash drawer, which had contained around £200,
0:23:34 > 0:23:37has been emptied. He calls the police.
0:23:38 > 0:23:41Meanwhile, Anne heads to the shop.
0:23:41 > 0:23:43I did worry about what Kieran was going to find,
0:23:43 > 0:23:45and I was waiting for him to phone, and thinking,
0:23:45 > 0:23:48"Oh, have you been battered over the head by somebody?!"
0:23:48 > 0:23:51She arrives, and is relieved Kieran is OK,
0:23:51 > 0:23:55but her beloved shop has been ransacked.
0:23:55 > 0:23:58I was upset. It's not a pleasant feeling at all.
0:23:58 > 0:24:01You do feel somewhat violated.
0:24:01 > 0:24:03The till has been emptied,
0:24:03 > 0:24:05but it isn't clear what else has happened.
0:24:05 > 0:24:07It just felt very surreal,
0:24:07 > 0:24:10because there was this smashed hole in the window that actually looked
0:24:10 > 0:24:14too small for anyone to get through, and some liquid over the shelves and
0:24:14 > 0:24:19over some of the boot boxes, that we realised was cooking oil,
0:24:19 > 0:24:21from the smell of it.
0:24:21 > 0:24:25They can't fathom why anybody would leave cooking oil in the shop.
0:24:25 > 0:24:29Kieran has already checked their CCTV, but found the recording was
0:24:29 > 0:24:33- unclear.- Although it was light outside, it was dark inside,
0:24:33 > 0:24:35which is why the CCTV wasn't great,
0:24:35 > 0:24:39but the security company next door came round and mentioned that they'd
0:24:39 > 0:24:41got the whole thing on film.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45When the police arrive,
0:24:45 > 0:24:47officers go to view the security company's footage,
0:24:47 > 0:24:49and this is what they see.
0:24:52 > 0:24:56A man walks across the street and peers through the shop's window.
0:24:58 > 0:25:03Then he walks around the buildings, checking the coast is clear.
0:25:03 > 0:25:07Anne and Kieran notice that he's sporting an unusual line
0:25:07 > 0:25:09in facial hair.
0:25:09 > 0:25:13This guy had what looked like a very obvious Mexican moustache.
0:25:14 > 0:25:18We weren't sure whether it could even be his own moustache,
0:25:18 > 0:25:22but he did seem to keep putting his hand up to his face,
0:25:22 > 0:25:24so that might have indicated it was a false moustache.
0:25:26 > 0:25:30The man then pulls out a small crowbar and levers off a metal panel
0:25:30 > 0:25:33under the window, but he can't get in.
0:25:36 > 0:25:38So he goes and gets a heavy rock.
0:25:39 > 0:25:42You're thinking, "He must be quite strong."
0:25:42 > 0:25:46He throws it hard at the window and kicks the glass through.
0:25:46 > 0:25:50He tries to make the hole bigger with his hand, but quickly pulls it
0:25:50 > 0:25:54- out.- He does seem to hold his hand in a way that you think,
0:25:54 > 0:25:56"He's hurt himself."
0:25:58 > 0:26:01The man comes back a moment later and puts gloves on.
0:26:01 > 0:26:03Then he clambers through the hole.
0:26:04 > 0:26:06He was very agile and quick.
0:26:08 > 0:26:11Inside, the man forces the till open,
0:26:11 > 0:26:14steals the cash drawer and puts it in a bag,
0:26:14 > 0:26:15and then he leaves.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20But how did the cooking oil end up in the shop?
0:26:21 > 0:26:24Staff at the security company think they've solved the mystery.
0:26:26 > 0:26:30They spot that, later, a suspicious-looking man arrives at
0:26:30 > 0:26:33the scene of the crime with a watering can full of oil.
0:26:33 > 0:26:35They believe it's the burglar.
0:26:35 > 0:26:39They think he may have come back to pour oil over the broken glass, to
0:26:39 > 0:26:41mask any traces of blood.
0:26:41 > 0:26:44But during his attempt at a cover-up, he actually reveals
0:26:44 > 0:26:47- himself.- When he returned to put the oil through the window,
0:26:47 > 0:26:49he had taken the disguise off.
0:26:51 > 0:26:54The police officers can now get a clear view of the man without his
0:26:54 > 0:26:57hoodie and oversized moustache.
0:26:57 > 0:27:01And that's not all - it turns out that the oil-pouring idea was a case
0:27:01 > 0:27:05of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08One of my staff members had noticed that there was some blood staining
0:27:08 > 0:27:11on some papers under the counter.
0:27:11 > 0:27:15Blood must have seeped through the burglar's gloves as he was rummaging
0:27:15 > 0:27:18near the till. A forensic officer takes a swab.
0:27:18 > 0:27:21We were very pleased, because the fact they've got blood is probably
0:27:21 > 0:27:23the best bit of evidence that you could find,
0:27:23 > 0:27:26because it would enable them to name the guy straightaway if he was on
0:27:26 > 0:27:30- their records. - And he is on their records.
0:27:30 > 0:27:32The man is soon arrested.
0:27:32 > 0:27:35Because of the video and DNA evidence against him,
0:27:35 > 0:27:38he realises there's no disguising the truth.
0:27:42 > 0:27:46In court, the thief pleaded guilty to four counts of burglary,
0:27:46 > 0:27:50possession of cannabis, and numerous driving offences.
0:27:50 > 0:27:53He was sentenced to two years in prison, and, for the driving
0:27:53 > 0:27:57offences, banned from driving for three years after his release.
0:28:01 > 0:28:04The repair bill after the burglary came to £1,000.
0:28:04 > 0:28:08After increasing the shop's security, Anne and Kieran have now
0:28:08 > 0:28:11put the break-in well and truly behind them.
0:28:11 > 0:28:14Being burgled hasn't affected my enjoyment of running this business.
0:28:14 > 0:28:17We're carrying on. We're coming into our busiest season of the year,
0:28:17 > 0:28:20and I'm very much looking forward to that.
0:28:26 > 0:28:29That's it for today. And that's it for a few more criminals
0:28:29 > 0:28:31who've been Caught Red Handed.
