0:00:02 > 0:00:05Thieves will steal our cash, our cars, our valuables -

0:00:05 > 0:00:08just about anything they can get their hands on.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12But now, the police are using cutting-edge technology to

0:00:12 > 0:00:13catch the bad guys.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15You want to make sure you've got a concrete case.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17Enough evidence to convince a court.

0:00:17 > 0:00:22Local councils, shops and businesses are fighting crime

0:00:22 > 0:00:23with their own tricks and traps.

0:00:23 > 0:00:27Just unbelievable that she thinks she can get away with this.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29And the public are using secret cameras

0:00:29 > 0:00:32to make sure their crooks get their comeuppance.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Fair means or foul, I was going to get rid of him.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37I thought, "We've got her!"

0:00:37 > 0:00:39And I was so happy. Thank God!

0:00:40 > 0:00:44So, anyone who's up to no good had better think twice,

0:00:44 > 0:00:47they might just get caught red-handed.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55Today, hairdresser Jenny is distraught that her salon is raided

0:00:55 > 0:00:57by burglars twice in a fortnight.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04One uses a crowbar to smash his way in.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Another uses his backside to bash his way in.

0:01:09 > 0:01:14But Jenny finds some important evidence the intruder left behind.

0:01:14 > 0:01:15I was pleased that we found it.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18I felt we were piecing together a puzzle.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21I wasn't going to rest until I got them.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28Also today, builder Chris can't find his cement mixer.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Maybe he's got things all mixed up.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34It starts your mind thinking, "I DID leave it there, didn't I?"

0:01:34 > 0:01:37I thought, "It was there this morning, I know it was."

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Can Chris solve the missing mixer mystery?

0:01:42 > 0:01:47Also later, Martin and Linda are trying to raise funds for treatment

0:01:47 > 0:01:50that could save their daughter Kelly's life.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53But someone's been stealing the money that people are donating.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55It's a stab in my heart.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Who the heck would do that to us?

0:01:58 > 0:02:02The family set out to track down the heartless thief,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05then discover he's not the only person stealing money

0:02:05 > 0:02:06meant for their daughter.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16Big businesses have always been able to afford effective security.

0:02:16 > 0:02:21But now that CCTV is getting cheaper, thieves had best beware,

0:02:21 > 0:02:24because there are eyes watching you everywhere.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Even a hair salon in a small town.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Strood is part of London's commuter belt.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37In the town centre, Jenny runs a hair salon.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40And HER roots are in this area, too.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44She grew up in the town and has lived here most of her adult life.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Her first-ever job was as a Saturday girl

0:02:46 > 0:02:50at a nearby hairdresser's, when she was just 13.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54I used to hair wash, sweep the floor, make teas and coffees.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Just assist, really.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01Jenny worked her way up to become a fully-qualified hairstylist.

0:03:01 > 0:03:06And then she decided at the age of 26 to open her own salon.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10It was a big risk, but I was quite established, and I just thought,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13"Do it and go and branch out on my own."

0:03:13 > 0:03:17Jenny enjoys training younger proteges, like Harman.

0:03:17 > 0:03:18Are you blow-drying now?

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Jenny is a very fun, enthusiastic character.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26That's why I work here, because of her.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28I've got a fabulous, fabulous team.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31I couldn't do anything else. Love my job.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34But Jenny's upbeat attitude to life at her salon is about

0:03:34 > 0:03:37to come under threat because of a burglary.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40In fact, two burglaries in quick succession.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47It's 8:30 on a Monday morning in spring.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52Harman arrives at the salon to open up, and is shocked by what he finds.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56I saw the reception, and I was like, "What happened here?

0:03:56 > 0:03:59"Why is it all a mess?"

0:03:59 > 0:04:01Then I went to the stock room.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03The safe had literally been ripped out.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07All the products and everything just chucked everywhere.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Then I went out to the back and that's when I saw the bathroom,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13and there's a massive hole in the window.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16He calls Jenny and she rushes in.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21There was stock everywhere, CCTV had been stolen, camera smashed up.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Had the salon five years, I've built it up on my own,

0:04:23 > 0:04:26and then someone just comes in and does that - it's just awful,

0:04:26 > 0:04:28horrible to see.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31As it all sinks in, they start to realise the extent

0:04:31 > 0:04:33of what's been taken.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37All the tip jars got stolen, there was quite a lot of money in them.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39£100, roughly.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42And obviously, since Christmas, we were building it up and then

0:04:42 > 0:04:45for someone to just take that, it's a bit like, "Whoa..."

0:04:45 > 0:04:48And the tip jars are not all that's missing.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52We had raffle money, that all got stolen.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53Petty cash got stolen.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Float got stolen.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58In the safe there was just short of a grand of cash

0:04:58 > 0:05:01and an expensive pair of clippers.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04It's like a week's worth of wages that puts me back off,

0:05:04 > 0:05:05I've still got to pay everyone.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Jenny calls the police,

0:05:09 > 0:05:12and knowing they'll need to look for forensic evidence,

0:05:12 > 0:05:16she feels she has no choice but to shut up shop for the day.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20It was our late-night as well, so we've lost a whole day's money,

0:05:20 > 0:05:21it really affected us.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23As they wait for the police,

0:05:23 > 0:05:28Jenny remembers that even though the salon's own CCTV system was stolen,

0:05:28 > 0:05:31there are other security cameras nearby that might have

0:05:31 > 0:05:33filmed the crooks.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37I thought, "Oh, but thank God, our building is monitored by CCTV."

0:05:37 > 0:05:40We went upstairs and got it and we watched it.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44What the outside cameras have recorded comes as a shock.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Late the previous night,

0:05:46 > 0:05:49a man creeps towards the back of the salon.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50He's carrying a crowbar.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53The man uses both hands to lift it,

0:05:53 > 0:05:55and smash one of the salon's windows.

0:05:59 > 0:06:00He starts to reach in.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05This camera's footage ends here.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09But images from another of the building's cameras show the face

0:06:09 > 0:06:11of the burglar who broke in to the salon.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15And he appears to have an accomplice.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18Neither of them is carrying the crowbar.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20So Jenny thinks they must have discarded it.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23She goes out to search the nearby streets,

0:06:23 > 0:06:25and finds it next to a wall.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29I was pleased that we found it.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32I felt like we were piecing together a puzzle.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36And when the police forensic team arrive, there's more good news.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Where the safe was, they found a bloody fingerprint

0:06:40 > 0:06:42right at the back.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46The police take away the CCTV and the crowbar Jenny found

0:06:46 > 0:06:48as they seek to identify the men.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Jenny cleans up the mess and boards the window

0:06:51 > 0:06:53so she can reopen the salon.

0:06:55 > 0:06:56We're just a small business.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58You know, it's hard enough for us to survive, anyway.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00In the days that follow,

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Jenny tries to earn back some of the money she's lost.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07But less than a fortnight after the break-in,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10the routine of her salon is shattered again -

0:07:10 > 0:07:13along with another of its windows.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19It's just gone midnight and a suspicious-looking man loiters

0:07:19 > 0:07:21outside the salon.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27He has a brick and he throws it at the salon's front window.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34But it doesn't completely smash the reinforced glass panel.

0:07:34 > 0:07:39So, he tries to smash through the salon's front door.

0:07:39 > 0:07:40But again, fails.

0:07:42 > 0:07:47So he hits upon an unusual, rather desperate tactic.

0:07:47 > 0:07:52He starts ramming the door with his rear end to try to break through the panel.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54For the next 15 minutes,

0:07:54 > 0:07:59the man uses this rather comic combination of brick and backside

0:07:59 > 0:08:03to try to fashion a hole big enough to wriggle through.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Eventually, he succeeds.

0:08:14 > 0:08:19He's in the salon for ten minutes before he comes crawling out.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27The next morning, Jenny gets a call at home saying her salon's

0:08:27 > 0:08:29been broken into yet again.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32"What? No, no way!"

0:08:32 > 0:08:34I've come running down here,

0:08:34 > 0:08:37and it was just a shock seeing a massive hole in my front door.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40It doesn't look good cos when we're opening, we've got no shop front.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42It looks like the ghetto salon.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45The shop's takings are no longer kept on the premises.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49So, all the burglar's got away with is the float in the till.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52But he's caused hundreds of pounds' worth of damage.

0:08:52 > 0:08:53He's done it all for £40.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55£40 float.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Feeling that her business is under siege,

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Jenny takes the drastic action of sleeping in the salon overnight.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07I didn't have an alarm, I didn't have any cameras,

0:09:07 > 0:09:09I just had wooden boards on the front of the shop.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11And I thought, if someone wanted to come through,

0:09:11 > 0:09:13they could just come back and clean me out.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15And this is all I have.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18That was the only option I had, was to stay in, protecting myself.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21After camping out in the salon for three nights,

0:09:21 > 0:09:25Jenny decides she wants to help the police solve these burglaries.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30So, she puts the CCTV images of all three suspects on social media.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34After the second break-in, I was at my wits' end,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37and I wasn't going to rest until I got them.

0:09:37 > 0:09:38So, I put it online.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43We've got a really good, loyal client base.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45I think they were really upset for us.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47You know, they can see we all work so hard.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51They really helped us, share the posts and get it to go viral.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55Information about the men in the pictures comes flooding in.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59I've received names, I've received addresses.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02We then pass that information onto the police and then let them

0:10:02 > 0:10:04deal with the matter.

0:10:04 > 0:10:05Aided by Jenny's leads,

0:10:05 > 0:10:08police are able to track down and arrest all three men.

0:10:09 > 0:10:15The public and my clients really, really helped us, so I'm thankful.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19With all the evidence stacked up against them,

0:10:19 > 0:10:22all three burglars realised there's no escape.

0:10:27 > 0:10:32In court, the man who used a crowbar to break into Jenny's salon received

0:10:32 > 0:10:35a 23-month sentence for numerous burglaries.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40His partner in crime pleaded guilty to burglary and was sent to prison

0:10:40 > 0:10:41for 18 months.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47The man who broke into the salon the second time also pleaded guilty.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50He was sentenced to 26 weeks' imprisonment,

0:10:50 > 0:10:52suspended for 12 months.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01After being broken into twice in such a short space of time,

0:11:01 > 0:11:04Jenny has improved the salon's defences.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07We've got more cameras, we've got an alarm now.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11Hopefully fingers crossed, we won't have any more break-ins.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15Jenny and her team are looking forward to more highlights than

0:11:15 > 0:11:17lowlights in the future.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19This year we're going to do lots of competitions,

0:11:19 > 0:11:24so we are all excited as a salon about that, so watch out!

0:11:25 > 0:11:28There we are, my darling. Do you like it?

0:11:28 > 0:11:29All done.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37Unfortunately, for people who've been through the distress of being

0:11:37 > 0:11:40burgled, there's an increased chance of it happening again.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44So, what can people do to avoid becoming a repeat victim of crime?

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Offenders talk amongst themselves.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Burglars will talk amongst themselves about

0:11:49 > 0:11:52the success they've had at various properties.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Those individuals that have targeted your house before have

0:11:55 > 0:11:56a good idea that you're likely to replace items,

0:11:56 > 0:11:58particularly if you've been insured.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02So thinking about boxes that you leave out on the drive for

0:12:02 > 0:12:04recycling, think about packaging,

0:12:04 > 0:12:07think about these things that may advertise, "Oh, I've had these items

0:12:07 > 0:12:09"replaced, come back and take them."

0:12:09 > 0:12:12What you need to do is reassess the security on your home,

0:12:12 > 0:12:16the security on your lights and your alarm system, window locks,

0:12:16 > 0:12:20door locks and the items that you leave on display.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22Invest in some crime prevention.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25That could be a sticker in the window saying, "No cold callers."

0:12:25 > 0:12:29It could be a sticker in the window saying, "We have CCTV or a dog."

0:12:29 > 0:12:31If you are a victim of crime,

0:12:31 > 0:12:35most forces in the country provide a service where actually officers,

0:12:35 > 0:12:37specially trained officers, crime prevention officers,

0:12:37 > 0:12:40will come do a survey of your property and give you suitable

0:12:40 > 0:12:42advice and recommendations of how you can make it safer.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51And now, this drive-thru burger bar

0:12:51 > 0:12:54is about to become a climb-thru.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59This woman has pulled up in her car in the early hours, to find

0:12:59 > 0:13:01the fast food restaurant closed,

0:13:01 > 0:13:04but the serving hatch has been left unlocked.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07So she's decided on a bit of a self-service.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11The thirsty thief starts by pilfering some pop,

0:13:11 > 0:13:15but her appetite for crime soon increases and she tries,

0:13:15 > 0:13:19with some difficulty, to wriggle in through the window.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23Unknown to her, every move of this undignified entrance

0:13:23 > 0:13:26is caught on camera.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31Next, the woman decides to go large and raid the restaurant

0:13:31 > 0:13:33for whatever she can get her hands on.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37But the butter-fingered thief struggles to keep hold of her booty.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42And this isn't just a BURGER-LARY,

0:13:42 > 0:13:47the woman eventually scrambles out with over a grand in cash as well as

0:13:47 > 0:13:48other food items.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51When police post this clip online...

0:13:52 > 0:13:54..she's identified,

0:13:54 > 0:13:56which means she's had her chips

0:13:56 > 0:13:59and won't be having a happy meal for quite some time.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13Chris and his wife Jackie live in Wells in Somerset.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15They grew up in villages near here,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18and have never felt the need to leave the area.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21Wells is quite quiet, it's quite sleepy,

0:14:21 > 0:14:24it's low in crime and it's just nice and friendly.

0:14:24 > 0:14:29It's such a lovely area, you've got city, countryside, everything, so, why worry?

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Chris took up building shortly after he and Jackie got married in 1986.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40We bought our first house when I was 19, and it needed renovating.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42So, my father-in-law, who was a builder,

0:14:42 > 0:14:47was advising us how to do it and all the rest of it, and I thought,

0:14:47 > 0:14:49"I like this."

0:14:49 > 0:14:51Chris went to college to learn the trade,

0:14:51 > 0:14:56then started his own business and hasn't looked back for 30 years.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58Going into someone's house,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01when they've been thinking about an idea for, like, two or three years,

0:15:01 > 0:15:04and actually make it happen and they come out and go, "Wow,"

0:15:04 > 0:15:07it gives you a good feeling.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10As well as raising their kids, Callum and Victoria,

0:15:10 > 0:15:14the couple have also either built or renovated all the homes they've lived in.

0:15:14 > 0:15:18Their latest project is converting a small bungalow into a larger house.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22It's hard graft, but it's rewarding as well.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25Ultimately, you get to live in something a lot better than what you

0:15:25 > 0:15:27could normally afford to buy.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31Though the couple generally agree about how to renovate their houses,

0:15:31 > 0:15:37they didn't see eye-to-eye about fitting CCTV into their latest home.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39In one of our other houses,

0:15:39 > 0:15:41somebody broke into the shed and nicked some tools.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44And I've had one ever since.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46I thought it was a complete waste of money.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49We were living in Wells, who's ever going to nick anything

0:15:49 > 0:15:51or come up our drive?

0:15:51 > 0:15:53But that's exactly what does happen.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57And Jackie ends up being thankful that they have security cameras

0:15:57 > 0:15:59poised to film the dirty deed.

0:16:03 > 0:16:04It's a Monday in the summer,

0:16:04 > 0:16:09and Chris is driving home after working on a project in Bristol.

0:16:09 > 0:16:10I was just finishing off a job

0:16:10 > 0:16:12which I managed to finish off by one o'clock,

0:16:12 > 0:16:14and it weren't worth starting anything else,

0:16:14 > 0:16:19so I thought I'd come home and do three hours' laying patio slabs.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21Chris plans to use his cement mixer,

0:16:21 > 0:16:24which is pictured here in a photo from a few months earlier.

0:16:26 > 0:16:31But when he gets home, he notices that it isn't where he left it.

0:16:31 > 0:16:32Drove through the driveway,

0:16:32 > 0:16:38looked at the space where the mixer was, thinking, "Who's had my mixer?"

0:16:38 > 0:16:40Thinking, "Did I actually have it there?"

0:16:40 > 0:16:43And I thought, "No, it was there this morning. I know it was."

0:16:44 > 0:16:49Chris goes inside and rewinds security camera footage to try and

0:16:49 > 0:16:50solve the mystery.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55He's stunned when he sees that, two hours earlier,

0:16:55 > 0:17:00there is a white van on his property which isn't supposed to be there.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04I was surprised to see a van reversing up the drive

0:17:04 > 0:17:09and a woman getting out and a bloke sliding across the seat to get out

0:17:09 > 0:17:13as well, open the side door,

0:17:13 > 0:17:17pick it up like it was nothing, put it in the van, put the stand on top,

0:17:17 > 0:17:19shut the door, and drive out.

0:17:19 > 0:17:2250 seconds, in and out and gone. Unbelievable.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27The heavy piece of equipment is worth £400.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30Chris is gutted it's gone.

0:17:30 > 0:17:34How people can just come waltzing, take it without a blink of an eye,

0:17:34 > 0:17:38you know, this is our home, this is a place where we should all feel safe.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41You know, it is only a cement mixer, but it still,

0:17:41 > 0:17:46I still feel violated by them coming in and just pinching stuff,

0:17:46 > 0:17:47and it's a horrible feeling.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52Chris takes the video to the local police station and reports the crime.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57Then he shows the clip to his family when they get home.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59They are outraged by the brazen theft.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04You're annoyed that you're trying to be a law-abiding citizen and

0:18:04 > 0:18:09work hard, and somebody comes along and blatantly takes something

0:18:09 > 0:18:10that belongs to you.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14The family decides to do a bit of digging around for information.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16Wells isn't a large place.

0:18:16 > 0:18:20And if the thieves are locals, then someone may know who they are.

0:18:20 > 0:18:24My daughter said, "I'll put it on Facebook and see if anyone recognises them."

0:18:24 > 0:18:27And then, within an hour, you had 24 replies.

0:18:27 > 0:18:32We were inundated, everybody seemed to know exactly who it was.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36When you've got 24 people saying it's the same people,

0:18:36 > 0:18:38it's got to be, isn't it?

0:18:38 > 0:18:40Chris doesn't use social media,

0:18:40 > 0:18:43but he's pleased that the rest of his family does.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45It was quite remarkable, actually,

0:18:45 > 0:18:48how people monitor what's going on all the time, which is a good thing.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52I mean, it's just nice to know that there are people around willing to

0:18:52 > 0:18:56support you in any situation like that.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59The police track down and arrest the couple whose names were given to Chris.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01Initially, they claim they were

0:19:01 > 0:19:04picking up the cement mixer for a friend.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06But soon realise that no-one believes them.

0:19:10 > 0:19:15In court, the pair pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay nearly £300

0:19:15 > 0:19:17each in fines, costs and compensation.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26Chris was delighted the thieves hadn't gotten away with the crime.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30Definitely glad they were caught so they could be named and shamed,

0:19:30 > 0:19:32basically, and then everybody knew

0:19:32 > 0:19:35that these people are thieving people.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37You know, if you see them around your van or anything,

0:19:37 > 0:19:39tell them to go away.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41And Jackie now admits that it was

0:19:41 > 0:19:45the right decision to install the CCTV system.

0:19:45 > 0:19:46I did have to swallow my words,

0:19:46 > 0:19:50because I had complained about the fact that he spent money on it.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53So...yeah, he was right on that one.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02A man steals donations intended

0:20:02 > 0:20:04to help save the life of a 17-year-old girl.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Then, a different thief steals donations meant for the same

0:20:12 > 0:20:15good cause from another shop nearby.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17The girl's parents are outraged.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21But, there's a chance security cameras can help catch these callous thieves.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31Dover in Kent -

0:20:31 > 0:20:34home to Martin and Linda and their 17-year-old daughter, Kelly.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38Kelly is just so gorgeous.

0:20:38 > 0:20:43I remember when she was born, it was such a wonderful experience in life.

0:20:43 > 0:20:48And as a kid, she was always fun-loving, a real tinker.

0:20:49 > 0:20:54She's our only child, and she's like my best friend, really.

0:20:54 > 0:20:55I just love her to bits.

0:20:57 > 0:21:02When she was 15, Kelly started to suffer from severe stomach pains.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05Following hospital tests and scans, the family received

0:21:05 > 0:21:08the terrible news that she had a very rare and lethal

0:21:08 > 0:21:10type of cancer.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13I couldn't believe it.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16Kelly started crying, oh, it's just hard to describe,

0:21:16 > 0:21:20but it was awful and I didn't know how to console her and I couldn't

0:21:20 > 0:21:21believe it myself.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26The family were given hope when they found a hospital in New York which

0:21:26 > 0:21:29might be able to help Kelly, but it was a shock

0:21:29 > 0:21:32when they were told how much the treatment would cost.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35Martin dropped to his knees,

0:21:35 > 0:21:38showed me the estimated bill

0:21:38 > 0:21:43would be 1,200,000, and...

0:21:45 > 0:21:48..I was so shocked and disappointed.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51But, you know, you just can't let your child die.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54No, you have to do something.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56The family began a fundraising campaign.

0:21:56 > 0:22:01Linda took a redundancy package from work and Martin semi-retired so they

0:22:01 > 0:22:04could put all their energy into raising money.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08We went about it by setting up a Facebook page, a Twitter page.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10The local papers have been good at supporting us,

0:22:10 > 0:22:12as have the local media.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16Many people in Dover took Kelly's plight to their hearts.

0:22:16 > 0:22:21Martin and Linda left collection tins in businesses all over town.

0:22:21 > 0:22:22And after nearly two years,

0:22:22 > 0:22:26the family had raised almost two-thirds of the money they needed

0:22:26 > 0:22:27for the treatment in New York.

0:22:28 > 0:22:33Every single coin that goes into any collecting boxes, counts.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36But then, as if Martin, Linda,

0:22:36 > 0:22:39and Kelly didn't have enough to contend with,

0:22:39 > 0:22:43they find that someone is stealing their donation money.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50It's a weekday in summer,

0:22:50 > 0:22:52and the family are at the hospital in London,

0:22:52 > 0:22:54when they receive a distressing phone call

0:22:54 > 0:22:56from a Chinese restaurant in Dover.

0:22:56 > 0:23:01Someone has stolen one of Kelly's collection tins from their counter.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04Who would do that to us?

0:23:04 > 0:23:06We took it immediately really personally.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08It's a stab to my heart.

0:23:09 > 0:23:14I was shocked somebody would stoop so low as to want to steal

0:23:14 > 0:23:15a sick girl's charity tin.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19The restaurant has a CCTV camera,

0:23:19 > 0:23:22but the footage isn't clear enough to identify the thief.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26The family travel back to Dover, and over the next few days,

0:23:26 > 0:23:29they find out another five collection tins have been stolen.

0:23:31 > 0:23:35What's going on? It just got worse and worse.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38But, we've got to get the funds, whatever.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40And that galvanised us into buying

0:23:40 > 0:23:44more tins and preparing them and getting them out.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Martin continues his daily routine of going around town

0:23:47 > 0:23:50collecting donations from tins.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54But when he goes to Silvio's restaurant, no tin can be found.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56The thief has struck again.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01Uh, we just stumbled upon one more that's gone.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04We were distraught cos I thought, "How stupid are we?"

0:24:04 > 0:24:06We've had tins, charity boxes,

0:24:06 > 0:24:08all sorts on the counters for all the years I've been here.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11Never, never, ever been one time they've been stolen.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14But Silvio, he's absolutely brilliant there,

0:24:14 > 0:24:16and he went, "We'll check the CCTV."

0:24:18 > 0:24:22Silvio's CCTV system records high-quality pictures.

0:24:22 > 0:24:23Before it disappeared,

0:24:23 > 0:24:26the collection tin can be seen on the counter here.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30Silvio searches through the footage to find the moment it was taken.

0:24:31 > 0:24:35We were just scanning through the days - see the tin, see the tin...

0:24:35 > 0:24:36Suddenly, tin wasn't there.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38So, then we knew, OK, it's this day.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40We went down through the hours,

0:24:40 > 0:24:43and I think it was proximately just before midday.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47At that time, the tin is in its normal position.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49But not for long.

0:24:49 > 0:24:50Because of this man.

0:24:52 > 0:24:56A camera records him walking into the restaurant and going to the

0:24:56 > 0:24:59gent's toilet, taking the tin with him.

0:25:00 > 0:25:04Another camera angle shows the man grabbing the tin,

0:25:04 > 0:25:07only a split-second before a member of staff walks out

0:25:07 > 0:25:08to serve a customer.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15The thief leaves a few minutes later with it hidden in his bag.

0:25:16 > 0:25:20Silvio believes it contained up to £80 of donations.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Everyone felt gutted, I think.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26Gutted that something like that could happen.

0:25:26 > 0:25:32But thanks to the CCTV, they do now have an image of the thief.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34When I saw how clear it was,

0:25:34 > 0:25:36I had no other thought but to get

0:25:36 > 0:25:42some stills of this person on my mobile, get it on social media,

0:25:42 > 0:25:44and basically, I said, "If anybody knows this person,

0:25:44 > 0:25:47"please phone the police on 101."

0:25:47 > 0:25:50The police soon start receiving calls from locals

0:25:50 > 0:25:52giving the name of the thief.

0:25:52 > 0:25:57I got a great deal of reaction from the wonderful Dover folk.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02The police investigate the theft of charity tins from other shops, and

0:26:02 > 0:26:05they discover that it isn't just this man who's stealing them.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10This CCTV footage shows another man walking into a Post Office.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16Ignoring an elderly customer who has her back to him,

0:26:16 > 0:26:18the man walks straight to Kelly's donation tin...

0:26:20 > 0:26:25..uses scissors to snip the string that secures it to the counter,

0:26:25 > 0:26:26then walks out with it.

0:26:28 > 0:26:32But these pictures are to put an end to the series of heartless thefts

0:26:32 > 0:26:33committed by these two men,

0:26:33 > 0:26:36which was so upsetting for Kelly's family.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38Police recognise them from the videos,

0:26:38 > 0:26:40find both men, and arrest them.

0:26:41 > 0:26:45We got the phone call from the police to say that the first person

0:26:45 > 0:26:47had been caught and the second person had been caught,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49and you're thinking, "Yes!"

0:26:49 > 0:26:51You know, bang to rights, really.

0:26:53 > 0:26:59In court, the 24-year-old man who stole from Silvio's was sentenced to

0:26:59 > 0:27:02two years in prison for that and other crimes.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04The other thief, who's 33,

0:27:04 > 0:27:07was sentenced to four months in prison for numerous crimes.

0:27:15 > 0:27:18After the men were arrested, no more collection tins went missing,

0:27:18 > 0:27:22and the family were able to continue raising money with the help and

0:27:22 > 0:27:25generosity of the people of Dover and beyond.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28For the bad apples that are out there,

0:27:28 > 0:27:32there are so many more lovely people out there.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35It's really heart-warming.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47Sadly, since our filming, Kelly's condition deteriorated.

0:27:49 > 0:27:53Despite all the efforts of the doctors and after her long,

0:27:53 > 0:27:54personal battle, she passed away.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00Linda and Martin have now used the funds they raised to set up a

0:28:00 > 0:28:05foundation in Kelly's name to help find a cure for the terrible disease

0:28:05 > 0:28:07that took their young daughter's life.
