0:00:05 > 0:00:09Just about anything they can get their hands on.
0:00:09 > 0:00:11But now, the police are using cutting-edge technology
0:00:11 > 0:00:13to catch the bad guys.
0:00:13 > 0:00:15We want to make sure we've got a concrete case.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20Local councils, shops and businesses are fighting crime
0:00:20 > 0:00:22with their own tricks and traps.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26It's just unbelievable that she thinks she can get away with this.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32to make sure the crooks get their comeuppance.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45The man makes the box disappear like an illusionist.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48But Brendan had a trick or two of his own.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00and they close long after we've finished work.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02And, when shopkeepers are working that hard,
0:02:02 > 0:02:04it's not surprising they don't like it
0:02:04 > 0:02:07when people try to steal their hard-earned cash.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16In Bournemouth on the south coast, Adil runs a convenience store.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07I keep the one lighter behind the counter all the time.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09Some customers, they want it. I give it them.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11The man goes outside for a cigarette.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15When he comes back in to return a lighter,

0:04:18 > 0:04:21I know he has not much money, you know, I said...
0:04:21 > 0:04:23He just give it to me back nicely.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26I said, "No, it's all right. Keep it, mate. Don't worry."
0:04:26 > 0:04:27The man leaves.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31But, half an hour later, he returns.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35And he's picked up on the security cameras entering the store.
0:04:37 > 0:04:41He waits with his coat sleeve pulled over his right hand.
0:04:43 > 0:04:47Adil comes out of the back room and goes to the till.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50But the man doesn't come up to him.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54Instead, he comes round to behind the counter, surprising Adil.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57What's the reason he's coming around here?
0:04:57 > 0:05:00Normally, they are not allowed to come behind the counter.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14Adil tries to defuse the situation
0:05:14 > 0:05:18by putting a friendly arm on the man's shoulder.
0:05:18 > 0:05:21But the man aggressively pushes him back towards the till.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24He pulls back his coat sleeve to reveal to Adil
0:05:24 > 0:05:28that he's holding a large bread knife in his right hand.
0:05:28 > 0:05:30I didn't see it before this, the knife.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33He said, "Open the till, I'm not joking."
0:05:33 > 0:05:35I said, "No."
0:05:35 > 0:05:39"It's nearly 8.30. Not any money in the till.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42"Just the change. You can't do nothing with that."
0:05:42 > 0:05:44He said, "No, give me the money."
0:05:44 > 0:05:48Adil still hopes he can appeal to the robber's better nature.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50I'm trying to just help him, firstly.
0:05:50 > 0:05:54I said, "I know you. You can turn now.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57"Please get out of the shop nicely. I don't report anything."
0:05:57 > 0:06:00But the man continues pointing at the till,
0:06:00 > 0:06:03angrily demanding Adil opens it.
0:06:04 > 0:06:08I said, "You're going to prison for that. That's not nice for you."
0:06:08 > 0:06:09But he never listen.
0:06:09 > 0:06:12He said, "I don't care. I need the money. Just open the till."
0:06:12 > 0:06:16He just pushed me back, he said, "Open the till, open the till."
0:06:16 > 0:06:17With nothing in the till,
0:06:17 > 0:06:21Adil fears he's now in danger whether he opens it or not.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24Every minute, he got angry, as well.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27You never know people they're going to do something.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Adil quickly hatches a plan to get the robber to back off.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36He said, "Yes."
0:06:36 > 0:06:39I said, "It's all right. I don't want to see your knife.
0:06:39 > 0:06:40"Just leave your knife down there.
0:06:40 > 0:06:43"I'm going to check the money for you under the counter.
0:06:43 > 0:06:44"Maybe some money down there."
0:06:44 > 0:06:47He said, "It's all right. Quick, give me money."
0:06:47 > 0:06:48Adil walks back towards the till
0:06:48 > 0:06:52and asks the robber to move a safe distance away.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57Then he reaches under the counter where there's a baseball bat.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00He doesn't want to hurt the man but hopes he can scare him off.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03He charges at him.
0:07:04 > 0:07:07I didn't hurt him. Just I'm doing it like that. But I didn't hurt him.
0:07:07 > 0:07:10I'm not like that person like that.
0:07:10 > 0:07:12After that, I don't know what I'm going to do.
0:07:12 > 0:07:14But the man doesn't leave.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18Instead, he grabs Adil's bat.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21The pair start a desperate struggle.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26Adil won't release the bat, so the robber uses his knife.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30He cuts Adil's hand, so he lets go.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Adil grimaces in pain
0:07:36 > 0:07:40but he clings on bravely and manages to wrestle back the bat.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45The pair break away from each other,
0:07:45 > 0:07:48Adil's wounded hand clearly causing him pain.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52The robber gives up on Adil opening the till
0:07:52 > 0:07:54and starts grabbing at the bottles of spirits.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57He just take the two spirits.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08The loud alarm goes off.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11When I pushed the alarm button, he never scared.
0:08:11 > 0:08:14He's very quiet. He didn't run.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17Finally, the robber leaves.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20Adil's thankful his ordeal is over.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24He take just the two spirits.
0:08:24 > 0:08:27I'm happy he's gone and left like that.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32Adil tells them the robber is a customer.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35He can't believe the sudden change in the man's character.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39When he's coming to here, all the time, he's quiet.
0:08:39 > 0:08:43He didn't talk to you. Not much.
0:08:43 > 0:08:48He just come in to buy the foodstuff, he just pays, just gone.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51But not this time.
0:08:51 > 0:08:53The police take away the security camera footage
0:08:53 > 0:08:55to begin their investigation.
0:08:56 > 0:09:01And Adil starts to reflect on how he resisted the aggressive robber.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05Watching it back, he's not sure he would react the same way again.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08It's scary, really.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11At the time, I'm not really scary, but a little bit,
0:09:11 > 0:09:13but after I'm watched that one, I said, oh,
0:09:13 > 0:09:16he maybe going to kill me, he maybe going to stop me,
0:09:16 > 0:09:19I'm thinking, second time, maybe he's going to.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21Next time, I'm going to more be careful.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24But, hopefully, there won't be a next time,
0:09:24 > 0:09:26certainly as far as this robber is concerned.
0:09:26 > 0:09:28The shop security camera pictures
0:09:28 > 0:09:32mean the police can put out an appeal with his image on it.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36With all eyes in the local area now looking out for him,
0:09:36 > 0:09:39there's no escape.
0:09:39 > 0:09:44The man, who lives near Adil's shop, hands himself in a few days later.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50In court, the man pleaded guilty to robbery,
0:09:50 > 0:09:52and possessing a knife in a public place.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55He was sentenced to four years in prison.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01Adil's satisfied with the outcome.
0:10:03 > 0:10:05I don't want anyone to go to prison.
0:10:05 > 0:10:07But I'm happy as well.
0:10:07 > 0:10:11The locals appreciate that Adil's actions
0:10:11 > 0:10:14have taken a dangerous offender off their streets.
0:10:14 > 0:10:17All my customers coming to me, they said, thank you.
0:10:17 > 0:10:20That's a bad people that you've removed from here.
0:10:20 > 0:10:21That's better for us.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23They're happy as well, my customers, as well.
0:10:25 > 0:10:27Thank you, see you, bye-bye. Bye.
0:10:35 > 0:10:39Now, here's a thief who's on the bottom rung of the criminal ladder.
0:10:39 > 0:10:41And he's likely to stay there,
0:10:41 > 0:10:45judging by his struggle to unfold this collapsible ladder.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48He's broken into an equipment yard
0:10:48 > 0:10:51and his plan is to put the ladder against the gate
0:10:51 > 0:10:55and lift the stuff he's stealing up and over the barbed wire.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59But he can't quite rise to the challenge.
0:10:59 > 0:11:04Turning the ladder over, he tries jumping on it to straighten it out
0:11:04 > 0:11:06but that doesn't work either.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09So he goes off in search of a solution.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13He's found another ladder.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16Maybe these will be his steps to success
0:11:16 > 0:11:18as he tries to steal a pressure washer.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21But he still can't make a clean getaway.
0:11:22 > 0:11:26The cack-handed thief gets it tangled up in the barbed wire
0:11:26 > 0:11:27and can't free it.
0:11:30 > 0:11:35So, finally, he gives up on his game of mistakes and ladders.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38Next morning, staff can't believe their eyes
0:11:38 > 0:11:41when they find the washer hanging off the barbed wire.
0:11:41 > 0:11:45But, because the bungling burglar's been caught on camera,
0:11:45 > 0:11:46the police are hot on his trail.
0:11:47 > 0:11:49If he ends up in prison,
0:11:49 > 0:11:52there's not much danger of him escaping from there, either.
0:11:58 > 0:12:01Money is vanishing from an elderly man's bedroom
0:12:01 > 0:12:04but there's an endless stream of possible culprits.
0:12:04 > 0:12:09Carers, friends, neighbours - even family.
0:12:09 > 0:12:14Who would be so callous as to steal from a man 100 years old?
0:12:21 > 0:12:24The town of Sandbach in Cheshire is where Peter lives,
0:12:24 > 0:12:28just a few miles away from his father, Frank.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30Frank was a Canadian lumberjack
0:12:30 > 0:12:34who originally came to work in Britain during the war.
0:12:34 > 0:12:38And then he met and fell in love with Peter's mother, Mary.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42Mum was a gentle lady, very placid.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45My dad, he looked after his family, he was a hard worker.
0:12:45 > 0:12:49Peter's parents enjoyed 75 years of marriage.
0:12:49 > 0:12:51Surrounded by children, grandchildren
0:12:51 > 0:12:53and great-grandchildren,
0:12:53 > 0:12:58their house was the centre of many happy family occasions.
0:12:58 > 0:13:00Family is very, very important.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02I always remember the kids used to come out of school
0:13:02 > 0:13:04and go around Grandma and Grandad's.
0:13:04 > 0:13:06And the family used to gather every Sunday
0:13:06 > 0:13:08when Mum used to put on a treat.
0:13:08 > 0:13:10We always had a get-together like that.
0:13:10 > 0:13:14One the biggest family events was when Frank turned 100.
0:13:14 > 0:13:16Dad did enjoy his 100th birthday
0:13:16 > 0:13:19with all his family there and his cake!
0:13:21 > 0:13:24Unfortunately, six months later,
0:13:24 > 0:13:28Mary suffered a bad fall and had to move into a nursing home.
0:13:28 > 0:13:30Frank remained at the couple's house
0:13:30 > 0:13:34with a team of carers and family members helping to look after him.
0:13:34 > 0:13:39But it becomes apparent one of those visitors has different priorities
0:13:39 > 0:13:42when money starts to go missing.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48Frank's decided he'd prefer not to talk on camera
0:13:48 > 0:13:53about what happened that summer but he still wants the story to be told.
0:13:53 > 0:13:57It all starts one day when his son Peter is visiting his dad
0:13:57 > 0:14:01and Frank tells him he thinks some of his money has gone missing.
0:14:01 > 0:14:06He used to keep 50 to £100 in his wallet in his bedside cupboard.
0:14:06 > 0:14:10The reason for that, he kept it for treats for the kids.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13Frank is too frail to go to the bank himself
0:14:13 > 0:14:15so Peter collects the money
0:14:15 > 0:14:18and puts it in a drawer by the side of the bed.
0:14:18 > 0:14:20Only close family know it's there,
0:14:20 > 0:14:24and Peter can't believe that any of them would steal from his dad.
0:14:24 > 0:14:27So he puts it down to Frank being confused.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30My mum did all the paperwork and things.
0:14:30 > 0:14:33My dad didn't understand that side of it.
0:14:33 > 0:14:37So, he was always suspicious of things to do with money
0:14:37 > 0:14:38or cheques and things like that.
0:14:38 > 0:14:44But, a few weeks later, Frank tells Peter he thinks more money has gone.
0:14:44 > 0:14:46The second time, it twigged.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48You know, I thought, there must be something,
0:14:48 > 0:14:50there could be something in this.
0:14:50 > 0:14:51Peter and his sister
0:14:51 > 0:14:55decide to monitor the cash in their dad's wallet
0:14:55 > 0:14:57and, sure enough, a few days later,
0:14:57 > 0:15:00they see for themselves money has vanished.
0:15:00 > 0:15:05I was shocked to confirm that my dad was right, there was money missing.
0:15:05 > 0:15:07But who's taking it?
0:15:07 > 0:15:09Frank receives a lot of visitors.
0:15:10 > 0:15:14He could have up to six carers coming in over the weeks.
0:15:14 > 0:15:17Neighbours coming in. Everybody was under suspicion.
0:15:17 > 0:15:19The family, the carers and everybody.
0:15:19 > 0:15:21When Peter breaks the news to his dad
0:15:21 > 0:15:26that there is definitely a thief in their midst, Frank is very upset.
0:15:26 > 0:15:28He wasn't trusting anybody.
0:15:28 > 0:15:32He actually told me he was peeping round corners at the carers,
0:15:32 > 0:15:34making sure they weren't going in the bedroom
0:15:34 > 0:15:36and checking people coming in.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39It really got to him, you know, which upset me.
0:15:40 > 0:15:42Determined to solve this mystery,
0:15:42 > 0:15:46Peter goes on to the internet and buys a special clock
0:15:46 > 0:15:48that contains a hidden camera.
0:15:48 > 0:15:50He puts it on Frank's bedroom wall,
0:15:50 > 0:15:55notifying the police and social services about what he's doing.
0:15:55 > 0:15:58Then, he puts £80 in his dad's wallet, and waits.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03A few days later, money goes missing again.
0:16:03 > 0:16:06Peter can't wait to check the camera recording.
0:16:08 > 0:16:11I took the little card out, brought it back here,
0:16:11 > 0:16:13put it on my computer at home.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16Peter expects to spool through the footage,
0:16:16 > 0:16:19observing and eliminating the suspects one by one
0:16:19 > 0:16:22before identifying the thief.
0:16:22 > 0:16:23But, to his dismay,
0:16:23 > 0:16:26the camera doesn't work around the time that the cash goes missing.
0:16:26 > 0:16:31His investigation couldn't have got off to a worse start.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33I felt really upset at the time
0:16:33 > 0:16:37because I was silly enough to put £80 in the wallet
0:16:37 > 0:16:40and they took £50, but I couldn't prove it.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44Frank is distraught.
0:16:44 > 0:16:46There's tears in his eyes.
0:16:46 > 0:16:48He actually says, "Somebody's pinching my money."
0:16:48 > 0:16:52That's what really upset me.
0:16:52 > 0:16:56Peter can't bear the thought of the guilty person slipping away again
0:16:56 > 0:17:00so he decides to try an expensive, more reliable camera.
0:17:00 > 0:17:05This is the new camera's recording of Frank as he tidies his bedroom.
0:17:05 > 0:17:07It seems to be working.
0:17:07 > 0:17:10But Peter doesn't want to risk too much cash this time
0:17:10 > 0:17:15so he puts just a £10 note and two £5 notes in the wallet.
0:17:16 > 0:17:17I wrote down the numbers,
0:17:17 > 0:17:20and checked it on the Thursday when I set it up.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23I checked it on the Friday,
0:17:23 > 0:17:26and everybody who had been through was recorded.
0:17:26 > 0:17:28It had worked, and the money was still intact.
0:17:29 > 0:17:33On Sunday, the new camera proves its worth.
0:17:33 > 0:17:37The carers came in three times a day, half an hour each day.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39The morning carer checked my dad was all right,
0:17:39 > 0:17:41had his breakfast, and made the bed.
0:17:41 > 0:17:44But, later in the day, another carer is filmed
0:17:44 > 0:17:46where she has no right to be.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51The evening carer, all she had to do was give him his tea,
0:17:51 > 0:17:53which she'd made up already, and make sure he was all right,
0:17:53 > 0:17:58and a cup of tea. She has no reason whatsoever to go in the bedroom.
0:17:58 > 0:18:02But she is in the bedroom, and clearly anxious,
0:18:02 > 0:18:04checking Frank's not coming down the hallway.
0:18:06 > 0:18:08Then, she walks over to the bedside cabinet
0:18:08 > 0:18:11and seems to know exactly what she's doing.
0:18:12 > 0:18:15She can be seen putting something in her pocket
0:18:15 > 0:18:17as she walks out of the room.
0:18:20 > 0:18:24Later that evening, the camera also records Peter's sister
0:18:24 > 0:18:27coming into their dad's room.
0:18:27 > 0:18:29My sister was checking, same as me.
0:18:29 > 0:18:31She notices £10 is missing
0:18:31 > 0:18:35and immediately sends a text message to Peter who rushes straight round.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38I thought, we've got her now, or him,
0:18:38 > 0:18:40because I knew the camera was working.
0:18:40 > 0:18:44As I was dismantling and checking the thing,
0:18:44 > 0:18:48I was shaking, really, I think, because I wasn't sure what I'd find.
0:18:52 > 0:18:56Peter takes the recording back home to watch on his computer
0:18:56 > 0:18:59and he finally gets the evidence he's been after.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02I was that pleased that I'd caught her.
0:19:02 > 0:19:06I thought, we've got her at long last.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09And I was shaking when I rang the police.
0:19:09 > 0:19:13The camera doesn't only provide video evidence for the police,
0:19:13 > 0:19:16it provides audio as well.
0:19:16 > 0:19:20If you actually listen, you can hear her undoing the zip...
0:19:20 > 0:19:22ZIP UNFASTENING
0:19:22 > 0:19:24..taking the money out, looking round again,
0:19:24 > 0:19:28put the money in her top pocket and gone back to my father.
0:19:28 > 0:19:30I was disgusted.
0:19:30 > 0:19:34The police take Peter's footage and arrest the woman.
0:19:34 > 0:19:38Thanks to the CCTV, she realises the game is up.
0:19:38 > 0:19:41When they told me she'd admitted it, I was dead chuffed. Yeah.
0:19:41 > 0:19:45Four months later, the woman appeared in court.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50She pleaded guilty to theft and was sentenced
0:19:50 > 0:19:53to 100 hours of unpaid community work.
0:19:53 > 0:19:57She also had to pay £180 in fines and costs.
0:20:00 > 0:20:02Sadly, Peter's mother Mary,
0:20:02 > 0:20:05who was in a nursing home during all of this,
0:20:05 > 0:20:07died the same week as the court case.
0:20:09 > 0:20:13Mum didn't know anything about the money, which I'm very grateful for.
0:20:13 > 0:20:17The agency fired the carer the day she was arrested.
0:20:17 > 0:20:22It's a very sad episode, but the good thing is we've caught her
0:20:22 > 0:20:24and I know she won't be doing it with anybody else.
0:20:24 > 0:20:29And Frank can now feel safe in his home once more.
0:20:30 > 0:20:32He knows we've caught the person who's done it,
0:20:32 > 0:20:36so he's quite happy now, which is the main thing.
0:20:41 > 0:20:43On Caught Red Handed,
0:20:43 > 0:20:47we've seen numerous carers caught stealing from people in their care.
0:20:47 > 0:20:49Over a million people in this country
0:20:49 > 0:20:54work in the care industry and very few of those are dishonest.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56But what should we do if we're suspicious
0:20:56 > 0:21:01that someone looking after our family or friends is up to no good?
0:21:01 > 0:21:04If you think that stuff is going missing, make a note of it,
0:21:04 > 0:21:06the time and date, and just keep doing that,
0:21:06 > 0:21:07keep it in a little book so that,
0:21:07 > 0:21:10when you do have to inform the police at a later date,
0:21:10 > 0:21:13we can establish the true facts of what's occurred.
0:21:13 > 0:21:16If you get to the stage where you think you might want to use CCTV,
0:21:16 > 0:21:19seek professional advice through the police service
0:21:19 > 0:21:21or through private companies,
0:21:21 > 0:21:23get the right equipment that will record effectively.
0:21:23 > 0:21:26Do a dry run with the family members, for example.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30You don't have to tell somebody when they come in you're recording them
0:21:30 > 0:21:32because it's your own personal space.
0:21:32 > 0:21:34But make sure you don't use it in an intrusive area
0:21:34 > 0:21:35such as a bathroom.
0:21:35 > 0:21:39If the carer or employee finds the camera within your property
0:21:39 > 0:21:43and confronts you, my advice would be that you just say to them,
0:21:43 > 0:21:47you've put it in there to protect your loved one or your own property.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50They shouldn't have an issue with it if they're behaving properly.
0:21:50 > 0:21:52It's only those individuals that I think
0:21:52 > 0:21:54would be behaving improperly
0:21:54 > 0:21:57that are likely to have issue with it and then you may need to rethink
0:21:57 > 0:21:59whether you continue employing that person.
0:22:02 > 0:22:07A mysterious, smartly-dressed stranger is having a drink in a pub.
0:22:07 > 0:22:11He seems well-to-do, but this is definitely no gentleman.
0:22:11 > 0:22:13He's got his eye on some money
0:22:13 > 0:22:16that's intended for people who are terminally ill.
0:22:24 > 0:22:28In Huddersfield, Brendan and his wife Jody run the Brooks Arms pub.
0:22:28 > 0:22:31It's a real nice place to work, definitely, yeah.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34A nice bunch of people that come in.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37Our close customers, they're more family.
0:22:37 > 0:22:40We all stick together. It's a lively pub.
0:22:40 > 0:22:43I love working here, I do. I do.
0:22:45 > 0:22:47The close-knit crowd at the pub
0:22:47 > 0:22:51regularly fill a charity box that Brendan and Jody put on the bar.
0:22:51 > 0:22:54It's a collection for a local hospice
0:22:54 > 0:22:56which has a special place in Brendan's heart
0:22:56 > 0:22:59because his mother Joan was a patient there.
0:22:59 > 0:23:04My mum was the best mum you could ever have, so kind.
0:23:04 > 0:23:07She had a beautiful smile. It just lit up the whole place.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10Joan passed away three years ago
0:23:10 > 0:23:13after losing a long battle with cancer.
0:23:13 > 0:23:16She spent her final days in Kirkwood Hospice
0:23:16 > 0:23:19and Brendan will never forget the care they gave her.
0:23:19 > 0:23:21They were just absolutely amazing with her.
0:23:21 > 0:23:26She couldn't ask for anything else, you know, so, yeah,
0:23:26 > 0:23:28they looked after her the best they could.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31Brendan really took it to heart. It's his mum.
0:23:31 > 0:23:34They gave him loads of after-care.
0:23:34 > 0:23:37We could have counselling, which I did.
0:23:37 > 0:23:39They were fantastic in that way.
0:23:39 > 0:23:40Ever since he lost his mum,
0:23:40 > 0:23:43Brendan and Jody have worked hard to raise funds
0:23:43 > 0:23:46to show their appreciation to Kirkwood.
0:23:46 > 0:23:50So they are deeply shocked to find there's someone who thinks
0:23:50 > 0:23:52that the money would be better in his pocket
0:23:52 > 0:23:54than going to help the hospice.
0:23:58 > 0:24:01It's a typical Sunday evening at the Brooks Arms.
0:24:01 > 0:24:06A security camera picks up this man drinking at the bar.
0:24:06 > 0:24:09I was down here mingling with the customers.
0:24:09 > 0:24:10I haven't seen him before.
0:24:10 > 0:24:13I got talking to him outside, he seemed a nice enough guy.
0:24:13 > 0:24:15Jody's working behind the bar tonight.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18She's also noticed the man.
0:24:18 > 0:24:22He were paying for his drinks. He had money. He looked well-to-do.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25But appearances can be deceptive.
0:24:25 > 0:24:27The man's looking for the opportunity
0:24:27 > 0:24:32to steal this collection box for the Kirkwood Hospice next to the till.
0:24:32 > 0:24:36He uses sleight of hand to sweep away the charity box
0:24:36 > 0:24:38and make it disappear.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44When a nearby customer leaves the bar,
0:24:44 > 0:24:48the man completes his crime with another conjuror's truck.
0:24:50 > 0:24:54He moves the box beneath the bar and, out of sight,
0:24:54 > 0:24:58he makes a hole in the cardboard so he can steal its contents.
0:25:01 > 0:25:04The thief then leans down by the nearby fruit machine
0:25:04 > 0:25:07and comes back up as if nothing's happened.
0:25:09 > 0:25:13Then, moments later, he does a vanishing act.
0:25:16 > 0:25:18It's not until the next morning
0:25:18 > 0:25:21that Jody discovers the money box is missing.
0:25:21 > 0:25:23I thought about this guy straightaway.
0:25:23 > 0:25:25None of our locals would stoop so low
0:25:25 > 0:25:28as to pinch a charity box, none of them.
0:25:28 > 0:25:29I couldn't believe it at first.
0:25:29 > 0:25:33I just go to look on CCTV to see who's got it.
0:25:33 > 0:25:37The security camera reveals that it was the man at the bar
0:25:37 > 0:25:41and shows how he did his dirty deed.
0:25:41 > 0:25:44Jody and Brendan later find the empty cardboard charity box
0:25:44 > 0:25:47stuffed behind the fruit machine.
0:25:47 > 0:25:50It broke my heart, to say the least.
0:25:50 > 0:25:54Not just because of my mum but because of, you know,
0:25:54 > 0:25:57everybody else who has either lost the fight to cancer,
0:25:57 > 0:26:00or is suffering with cancer now.
0:26:00 > 0:26:05After calling the police, Brendan tells the hospice about the theft.
0:26:05 > 0:26:07It was really disappointing,
0:26:07 > 0:26:09really heartbreaking in a way, because that money
0:26:09 > 0:26:11can make a massive difference to Kirkwood Hospice.
0:26:11 > 0:26:14People obviously put their small change in,
0:26:14 > 0:26:17but that small change grows into a massive pile
0:26:17 > 0:26:19and we rely heavily on those donations.
0:26:19 > 0:26:22For instance, £5 could pay for a patient
0:26:22 > 0:26:25to have a really nice, hearty home-cooked meal.
0:26:25 > 0:26:28So it really does add up.
0:26:30 > 0:26:32Back at the Brooks Arms,
0:26:32 > 0:26:35it's not just the loss of money that bothers Brendan and Jody,
0:26:35 > 0:26:39it's who stole it and how he did it that annoys them.
0:26:39 > 0:26:42It doesn't look like somebody who's desperate for money.
0:26:42 > 0:26:43He's well-dressed.
0:26:45 > 0:26:47It angers you, it really does.
0:26:47 > 0:26:51I want to raise as much as I can. Oh... I can't do it.
0:26:53 > 0:26:56The thief may have tricked everyone at the bar,
0:26:56 > 0:26:59but Brendan has a trick of his own to play.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02The well-dressed man doesn't know there was a camera on him
0:27:02 > 0:27:05and Brendan puts the footage on the internet.
0:27:05 > 0:27:10I wanted more people to see it and it went absolutely viral.
0:27:10 > 0:27:12Huddersfield's horrified.
0:27:12 > 0:27:15The video is shared nearly 4,000 times,
0:27:15 > 0:27:19and viewed over 100,000 times.
0:27:19 > 0:27:23I found out his name, I found out where he worked.
0:27:23 > 0:27:26Within hours of the footage being posted,
0:27:26 > 0:27:28the thief realises the game is up
0:27:28 > 0:27:31and hands himself in at the local police station.
0:27:31 > 0:27:34Because he handed himself in,
0:27:34 > 0:27:38the police decided it was unnecessary to take it to court
0:27:38 > 0:27:42and he was given a community order under police conditions instead.
0:27:47 > 0:27:51But, at the Brooks Arms, some good came out of the affair.
0:27:51 > 0:27:53With all the publicity,
0:27:53 > 0:27:57the money that had been stolen was more than replaced.
0:27:57 > 0:28:00People who don't come in the pub, coming in and donating,
0:28:00 > 0:28:04because they'd seen it on social media, which were really nice.
0:28:04 > 0:28:05In memory of his mum,
0:28:05 > 0:28:08Brendan and Jody are determined to carry on holding
0:28:08 > 0:28:12special charity events at their pub to support the hospice.
0:28:12 > 0:28:15Every year, I want it to get bigger and bigger and bigger.
0:28:15 > 0:28:18I want to raise as much as I can for Kirkwood.
0:28:24 > 0:28:26That's it for today,
0:28:26 > 0:28:27and that's it for a few more criminals
0:28:27 > 0:28:30who have been Caught Red Handed.
