0:00:03 > 0:00:05There are 700,000 burglaries
0:00:05 > 0:00:07in the UK every year.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24But right across the country, dedicated police teams
0:00:24 > 0:00:28are on the offensive, waging war against the criminals
0:00:28 > 0:00:30who steal from local homeowners.
0:00:30 > 0:00:34Police! Open the door, otherwise, entry's going to have to be forced.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38For the victims of these crimes, it can take months, even years,
0:00:38 > 0:00:40to come to terms with what's happened.
0:00:40 > 0:00:44I feel absolutely sick that they think they've got the right
0:00:44 > 0:00:47to be able to do what they've done. I really do.
0:00:47 > 0:00:51But in this series, we're about to show them, and you,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53how we can all beat the burglars.
0:00:55 > 0:00:56This is Crime Scene Rescue.
0:00:58 > 0:01:01On today's show, we meet Harry and Linda,
0:01:01 > 0:01:04a remarkable couple who have had a run of bad luck.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07Now what should have been a day of happiness
0:01:07 > 0:01:09has turned into another day of despair.
0:01:09 > 0:01:13So today, you actually went to see your grandchild for the first time.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15- Born today.- Yeah.- And this is what you come back to.- Yeah.
0:01:15 > 0:01:19What's worse, the thieves have stolen treasured possessions
0:01:19 > 0:01:21belonging to Linda's mum.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24- You just think they're...- Gone.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27She does. I mean, she'd had it years and years and years.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30And while the police try and catch the criminals,
0:01:30 > 0:01:33we take on the challenge of transforming their home,
0:01:33 > 0:01:37in the hope that we can put the happiness back into their lives.
0:01:37 > 0:01:41- We couldn't think what you'd do that'd make it...- Oh, it's...
0:01:41 > 0:01:43- But it's incredible, isn't it? - Absolutely brilliant.
0:01:48 > 0:01:49'West Yorkshire Police. How can I help?'
0:01:55 > 0:01:57It's 10:30pm, on a cold night in Leeds,
0:01:57 > 0:01:59and a burglary is being called in.
0:01:59 > 0:02:01'How have they got inside your house?'
0:02:05 > 0:02:07According to recent figures,
0:02:07 > 0:02:10there have been over 14,000 domestic burglaries
0:02:10 > 0:02:12in West Yorkshire, but the police here
0:02:12 > 0:02:14are doing everything in their power to tackle the criminals.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16'Have you just got home?'
0:02:21 > 0:02:23'Oh, what a shame!'
0:02:25 > 0:02:26Just outside the city centre,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29I've arrived at the home of Harry and Linda,
0:02:29 > 0:02:31with officers from West Yorkshire Police.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33Just very briefly, what's happened?
0:02:33 > 0:02:36Obviously, they've rifled through your drawers and some cupboards.
0:02:36 > 0:02:40They've just ransacked all the cupboards and the drawers.
0:02:40 > 0:02:41We just had another grandchild born...
0:02:41 > 0:02:44- We've just had a grandchild... - Today? Congratulations.
0:02:44 > 0:02:45And then you get back to this.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48So you actually went to see your grandchild for the first time...
0:02:48 > 0:02:51- Yeah.- Born today.- Yeah.- And this is what you come back to.- Yeah.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55- And she were born at ten... ten past two this afternoon.- Yeah.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58And, of course, we went there.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01A lovely, beautiful new baby.
0:03:01 > 0:03:03- We come in and... - Came back to this.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06- I said, "What's...doors open for?" - Oh, dear.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09I looked and I said, "Oh, God, somebody's been in!"
0:03:11 > 0:03:13I don't know.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15Linda, what's happened to your foot?
0:03:15 > 0:03:20I've broken a metatarsal bone. This was the start of it.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22It's been absolutely horrendous.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25Three weeks before Christmas, I did this.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28- My son, he's lost...- Taken his finger off.- ..half his finger.
0:03:28 > 0:03:32- And crushed his foot. - And all his foot's all crushed.
0:03:32 > 0:03:36The week after, my husband crossed over the road
0:03:36 > 0:03:38and got run over - knocked down.
0:03:38 > 0:03:39What else could happen?
0:03:39 > 0:03:43Oh, dear! You've really been through it, haven't you, you two?
0:03:43 > 0:03:45'Talk about unlucky, and then this happens.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48'Harry's laptop, and treasured jewellery
0:03:48 > 0:03:50'passed on from Linda's late mum have all gone.
0:03:50 > 0:03:54'While I'm taking this in, PC Thomas Powell is upstairs,
0:03:54 > 0:03:57'hunting for clues.'
0:03:57 > 0:03:58The glass top is ideal
0:03:58 > 0:04:03and the mirrored wardrobes have obviously been...been moved.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06Hopefully, touch wood, there'll be some fingerprints,
0:04:06 > 0:04:08but unlikely, from what I can see.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10I can see a couple of glove marks, so...
0:04:10 > 0:04:12But they've come in here and had
0:04:12 > 0:04:14a right good root around, unfortunately,
0:04:14 > 0:04:17which is the worst part of it, really, especially for the victims
0:04:17 > 0:04:20when they come home, especially after a day like today.
0:04:20 > 0:04:21To come home to this
0:04:21 > 0:04:25is not going be a happy ending for them, unfortunately.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28'It's certainly been an emotional day for Harry and Linda,
0:04:28 > 0:04:30'but PC Richard Crossland is doing his best
0:04:30 > 0:04:32'to help them keep their spirits up.'
0:04:32 > 0:04:35It can be traumatic, but try and focus on that little one.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39You know what I mean? Because that's the main thing at the moment.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41'It's hard to comprehend
0:04:41 > 0:04:43'the terrible time this couple are having,
0:04:43 > 0:04:46'but I want to let them know I'm here to help.'
0:04:46 > 0:04:50First of all, I'm sorry that we've had to meet in these circumstances,
0:04:50 > 0:04:52with such a horrible thing that's happened to you,
0:04:52 > 0:04:56but are you all right to tell me - what's actually happened today?
0:04:56 > 0:04:59They've obviously got in through the stable door we've got at the back.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01The top one hasn't got a lock on it,
0:05:01 > 0:05:04there should be screws running through.
0:05:04 > 0:05:06- Sort of prised it open? - Prised it open, and then they...
0:05:06 > 0:05:08Got the latch up and got in through that.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
0:05:11 > 0:05:13It's an awful thing to come in and, you know,
0:05:13 > 0:05:16- somebody's been in your house. - How would you feel about us
0:05:16 > 0:05:18assessing your home, with the aid of the police,
0:05:18 > 0:05:19and if they find any weak spots
0:05:19 > 0:05:23like that back door, which doesn't have adequate security at the moment,
0:05:23 > 0:05:26- that we put that on for you? - Fine.- That's brilliant. Yeah.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29- Anything that helps will be more than welcome.- Yes.
0:05:29 > 0:05:33- OK. I think that's what we're going to do.- Good.- Oh, that's lovely. Thank you.
0:05:36 > 0:05:40On first impressions, the burglars have made a real mess of this home.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43But I'm sure there's plenty of things I can do
0:05:43 > 0:05:46to help make them feel safe and secure again.
0:05:46 > 0:05:50While the police continue their investigation,
0:05:50 > 0:05:53I want to see if I can reverse Harry and Linda's recent run of bad luck.
0:05:53 > 0:05:57Time to hit the phones and assemble an army of volunteers
0:05:57 > 0:05:59to help turn their fortunes around.
0:05:59 > 0:06:01Is that Paul?
0:06:01 > 0:06:02Hi, is that Steve?
0:06:02 > 0:06:04Dave, it's Rav. How are you doing?
0:06:04 > 0:06:06Laura, hi, it's Rav.
0:06:06 > 0:06:10We've got a couple, Harry and Linda, that've been burgled recently
0:06:10 > 0:06:13and it's really, really upset them, as you can imagine.
0:06:13 > 0:06:17The door itself's fine, but the locks are really, really poor.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19They're a lovely couple, Harry and Linda,
0:06:19 > 0:06:23they've really been through some absolutely shockingly bad luck recently.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25I want to do the inside of their home, so it actually...
0:06:25 > 0:06:29it feels like home again for them, because at the moment, they can't relax.
0:06:29 > 0:06:31We don't have much time on this, unfortunately.
0:06:31 > 0:06:32Thanks for your help, Paul...
0:06:32 > 0:06:34Cheers, then. Bye.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38My team of local heroes is taking shape,
0:06:38 > 0:06:41and I know with their help, we can really make a difference.
0:06:44 > 0:06:46It's the morning rush hour in Leeds
0:06:46 > 0:06:49and things have been equally as hectic at Harry and Linda's.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53Last night, the police continued to focus on solving this crime,
0:06:53 > 0:06:56carrying out a full forensic assessment.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59For me, my first challenge is to make this home
0:06:59 > 0:07:03as safe as it can possibly be, and there's no better place to start
0:07:03 > 0:07:05than with a review of their security.
0:07:05 > 0:07:10I've drafted in crime-prevention expert PC Paul Croft.
0:07:10 > 0:07:13Thanks for coming. You've had a look at this property and we need to up this security,
0:07:13 > 0:07:17I think, by quite a bit. I notice they have got a light, I'm not sure it's working.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19I believe it's not working.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23So if you've got something installed, it's been put there for a reason.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27We need to either look to replace that, or certainly repair it,
0:07:27 > 0:07:29so that it does the job that it's been designed for.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33That would light up this area, no-one's going to sneak around,
0:07:33 > 0:07:35so we need that to be working. Anything else at the front?
0:07:35 > 0:07:40If you look at the houses across opposite, they've got alarm boxes.
0:07:40 > 0:07:42This particular one hasn't, which, again,
0:07:42 > 0:07:45is saying, you know, to us, it hasn't got an alarm on it.
0:07:45 > 0:07:46That's something we could look at.
0:07:46 > 0:07:47There is a garage here
0:07:47 > 0:07:50and although it doesn't link directly into the house,
0:07:50 > 0:07:52it's still generally quite a vulnerable place.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55Is there anything you can think we could do there?
0:07:55 > 0:07:58If we're installing an alarm on the property, perhaps we could
0:07:58 > 0:08:01put the alarm onto the garage door, as well as part of the alarm system.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03Yeah. Nice and easy.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06So just an extra sensor, perhaps, on the door, so if that's moved,
0:08:06 > 0:08:08- it would set the system off. - I'd say so, yes.- OK.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11Let's have a look at the side and the back of the house,
0:08:11 > 0:08:12see if there's anything there.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14This is where the thieves broke in
0:08:14 > 0:08:18and, to my mind, it's the most vulnerable part of this home.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20So we see round the rear of the property now,
0:08:20 > 0:08:22this conservatory, a possible area of weakness.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25Just looking at it, it's a massive concern.
0:08:25 > 0:08:26That's just coming away, isn't it?
0:08:26 > 0:08:28If you gave that a really good tug,
0:08:28 > 0:08:30that's going to open, isn't it?
0:08:30 > 0:08:33Yeah, very vulnerable. Something definitely needs doing about that.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36But the biggest concern is the backdoor.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38We've got a slight mark in here, where it appears
0:08:38 > 0:08:40that the offenders have simply put something in,
0:08:40 > 0:08:42and if I give it a push...
0:08:45 > 0:08:48- There we go. - Now, that door was locked.- Yeah.
0:08:48 > 0:08:50- We haven't just left that open there, have we?- No.
0:08:50 > 0:08:54That door was locked, and by you just pushing in the right place,
0:08:54 > 0:08:56you've just popped that door right open.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58So that seriously needs addressing, and fast.
0:08:58 > 0:09:00A massive area of concern, yes.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05From my chat with Paul, there's certainly plenty to do
0:09:05 > 0:09:08if we are going to improve the security here.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11There's no time to waste in getting this transformation started.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15So it's great my team of helpers have arrived
0:09:15 > 0:09:18to get things moving at Harry and Linda's.
0:09:18 > 0:09:21We're installing a brand new alarm and upgrading the lighting,
0:09:21 > 0:09:24but it's the back of the property that is particularly vulnerable,
0:09:24 > 0:09:28so it's vital we make this a priority
0:09:28 > 0:09:29to stop the burglars coming back.
0:09:29 > 0:09:31Locksmith Steve is on the case.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33This particular window...
0:09:35 > 0:09:38..the catches it has on aren't very strong.
0:09:38 > 0:09:41So we're putting additional window locks on,
0:09:41 > 0:09:43making the window a lot more secure.
0:09:43 > 0:09:47My mission is not just about security,
0:09:47 > 0:09:49I want to make this house feel like a home again,
0:09:49 > 0:09:53and for that, I've called in designers Kate and Laura.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55This is the scene of where the burglary took place,
0:09:55 > 0:09:58so we want to give it back to them as a nice place they can relax
0:09:58 > 0:10:00and put the memory of the burglary behind them.
0:10:00 > 0:10:04Is this something you think you might be able to transform and help us out with?
0:10:04 > 0:10:07Yeah, absolutely. I think they've had a bit of a rough time,
0:10:07 > 0:10:10so it would be really nice to give the room a bit of a revamp for them.
0:10:10 > 0:10:13Something soft and neutral, just a nice, family, relaxing space.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16They are so close to their family because they were actually
0:10:16 > 0:10:19visiting a brand new grandchild when this burglary took place.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22So if you can incorporate the family element into this,
0:10:22 > 0:10:24I think they'd really appreciate it.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27Maybe looking at, they've got a lot of family photos around,
0:10:27 > 0:10:30so maybe look at creating a bit of an area
0:10:30 > 0:10:33to show those off to best effect as well.
0:10:33 > 0:10:36I think remove the arches and put some new paper on there
0:10:36 > 0:10:38that's going to make a great feature.
0:10:38 > 0:10:42A lot to be done and we don't, unfortunately, have too much time.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44So it's going to be tough. But you reckon you can do it?
0:10:44 > 0:10:48- Absolutely, yeah.- Definitely. - We're up for the challenge.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53Well, the designers are confident and the tradesmen are cracking on.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56But for Harry and Linda, the impact of the burglary
0:10:56 > 0:10:58is really starting to hit home.
0:10:58 > 0:11:02I think, actually, it hit me mostly when I went to bed.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05It were just a matter of climbing over all the clothes
0:11:05 > 0:11:09- and then you're thinking...- Constant reminders what they've done.- Yeah.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11And, you know, you sort of...
0:11:11 > 0:11:14I got into bed and I'm thinking, "My God," you know,
0:11:14 > 0:11:17"they were there not long since."
0:11:17 > 0:11:20Recently, her mum died and we've added the wedding ring to...
0:11:20 > 0:11:25- Yeah. I got a wedding ring. - That's what started you.- Yeah.
0:11:25 > 0:11:26Sorry...
0:11:26 > 0:11:29I hadn't thought about it, you know.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37But, you know, I hadn't thought about it in...
0:11:39 > 0:11:41- You just think...- Gone.
0:11:41 > 0:11:45I mean, she'd had it years and years and years.
0:11:45 > 0:11:4850 years, hadn't she? And more. 60 years.
0:11:48 > 0:11:50It really unnerves you.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52It does, a little bit, yeah.
0:11:52 > 0:11:55They say... You know, I've heard people say that, you know,
0:11:55 > 0:11:59they've been burgled and you think, it's awful, is that.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02But it's... You don't realise how bad it is.
0:12:02 > 0:12:03No. Until it happens, no.
0:12:03 > 0:12:08Now I think, my God, why didn't we do this, why didn't we do that?
0:12:08 > 0:12:12Just simple things which can stop it as well, you know.
0:12:12 > 0:12:14But you just, you just put things off, don't you?
0:12:16 > 0:12:18Well, we're putting things off no longer
0:12:18 > 0:12:21and work is well under way to make this home more secure.
0:12:22 > 0:12:24But we're not the only ones who've made progress.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27The police have a promising lead.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30We've discovered further evidence at the scene
0:12:30 > 0:12:33and that's in the form of some gloves that have been left
0:12:33 > 0:12:35near to the scene of the burglary.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37Those gloves have been seized by police officers
0:12:37 > 0:12:40and have been packaged and are now at our forensic laboratory,
0:12:40 > 0:12:44where the scientists are trying to recover DNA from those gloves
0:12:44 > 0:12:46that can then be profiled and go onto the computer
0:12:46 > 0:12:48and, hopefully, bring a match up from those.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51So the investigation is moving forwards.
0:12:51 > 0:12:53As night falls over the city,
0:12:53 > 0:12:56the police have returned to Harry and Linda's neighbourhood
0:12:56 > 0:12:57to look for additional leads
0:12:57 > 0:13:00and offer support to the local community.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02If you can go round the neighbourhood, please.
0:13:02 > 0:13:05I've given you all your house numbers already.
0:13:05 > 0:13:09Do some house-to-house and see if we've got any witnesses to this offence,
0:13:09 > 0:13:11and do home security assessments, where required.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15The operation is being led by Sergeant Sue Needham,
0:13:15 > 0:13:18who's also paying Linda a visit.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20My visit now is to see the victim,
0:13:20 > 0:13:23bearing in mind the burglary happened last night,
0:13:23 > 0:13:26just to offer her some reassurance and crime-prevention advice.
0:13:26 > 0:13:29Sometimes, when you've been burgled, you can't remember everything that's been stolen,
0:13:29 > 0:13:33so there may be other things that have come to light today.
0:13:33 > 0:13:38- So, I'm aware that a laptop was taken, and some jewellery.- Yeah.
0:13:38 > 0:13:42And I've just... I had some pictures of my jewellery,
0:13:42 > 0:13:45and a lot of it was my mum's.
0:13:45 > 0:13:49I knew there was three rings
0:13:49 > 0:13:51and I'd forgotten until I saw this picture,
0:13:51 > 0:13:55- but her wedding ring as well's gone. - Oh, dear.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59At the moment, as we speak, we've got the Police Community Support Officers
0:13:59 > 0:14:03going round all your street now, all the houses that back onto here,
0:14:03 > 0:14:05doing house-to-house.
0:14:05 > 0:14:08It's called Operation Optimal. We've been doing this
0:14:08 > 0:14:12for about a year now and it has reduced the burglaries by about 50%.
0:14:12 > 0:14:14- So it is working.- Yeah.
0:14:14 > 0:14:17- If we arrest anybody, obviously, we'll let you know.- Yes.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20And from the house-to-house that we're doing now,
0:14:20 > 0:14:23if anything comes back from that, I'll let you know about that as well.
0:14:23 > 0:14:24Yeah. Oh, right, love. Thank you.
0:14:31 > 0:14:32It's early morning.
0:14:32 > 0:14:36Harry and Linda are leaving home, as things are shifting up a gear.
0:14:36 > 0:14:39- Bye!- See you guys later.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46I've called in my band of Good Samaritans to help put
0:14:46 > 0:14:48a little happiness back in their lives.
0:14:49 > 0:14:52OK, folks. Thanks for rushing down at such short notice.
0:14:52 > 0:14:55We're all here to help the people living in this house - Linda and Harry.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58They have had the worst luck imaginable recently,
0:14:58 > 0:15:00and that's where you lot come in.
0:15:00 > 0:15:03What I want to do, with your help, is to fix up this house.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06Let's make it as safe and secure as we possible can.
0:15:06 > 0:15:10So what we do have is a really deserving couple.
0:15:10 > 0:15:13What we don't have, unfortunately, is a lot of time.
0:15:13 > 0:15:16So let's get in there, get cracking, and get this place fixed up.
0:15:16 > 0:15:17ALL: Yeah!
0:15:19 > 0:15:23To complete my mission, we need to finish tightening up the security
0:15:23 > 0:15:25with the alarm, lights and locks.
0:15:25 > 0:15:29And I really want to put a smile back on Harry and Linda's faces
0:15:29 > 0:15:32with a transformation of their ransacked living room.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36The first things to disappear are Harry's DIY purple arches.
0:15:36 > 0:15:40- Are you ready to have the panelling taken off yet? - Yes, please. Take it down.
0:15:47 > 0:15:50The ceiling's next, then paper the walls tomorrow morning.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55I think we should make our target. It's a bit tight, but we should do it.
0:15:57 > 0:16:01And, at last, that vulnerable back door is being dealt with.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04This is perfect because if your house has poor security,
0:16:04 > 0:16:07you are six times more likely to get burgled
0:16:07 > 0:16:09than a home with even basic protection.
0:16:10 > 0:16:13Back in the living room, the designers also have plenty of ideas.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16The new light fittings have gone up, the old ones are out.
0:16:16 > 0:16:18So we've got lots of nice, bright light in here,
0:16:18 > 0:16:20which will really lift the space.
0:16:20 > 0:16:23We've got the furniture, new furniture arriving,
0:16:23 > 0:16:25all the accessories are coming in.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27So once all the painting is done,
0:16:27 > 0:16:30we can start cracking on with all of that as well.
0:16:30 > 0:16:34The much-needed security update is really coming on,
0:16:34 > 0:16:37and I'm so pleased with what locksmith Steve has done
0:16:37 > 0:16:39to protect the back door.
0:16:39 > 0:16:40This is where they broke in.
0:16:40 > 0:16:43It had absolute minimal security.
0:16:43 > 0:16:45- In fact, it had none on the top part of this door.- Absolutely.
0:16:45 > 0:16:48You've changed that in a few simple steps.
0:16:48 > 0:16:49We've put what's called
0:16:49 > 0:16:52a British Standard lock on this door, a deadlock,
0:16:52 > 0:16:54and it throws this extended bolt out,
0:16:54 > 0:16:56and we've added another bolt here.
0:16:56 > 0:16:58- So if...- So, now it's like one door.
0:16:58 > 0:16:59So you can have it like that,
0:16:59 > 0:17:01or you can create just the one door
0:17:01 > 0:17:04by putting that down and closing it.
0:17:04 > 0:17:07You've instantly improved the security.
0:17:07 > 0:17:09So where it had just a latch before,
0:17:09 > 0:17:12we've now got one, two, three points of security on the top door...
0:17:12 > 0:17:15- Absolutely. Yes. - ..as well as the bottom lock.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18- That is much, much better than it was.- Absolutely, yeah.- Excellent.
0:17:18 > 0:17:22As well as the local tradesmen and women, family friend Jean,
0:17:22 > 0:17:26and Harry and Linda's daughter, Nicola, are also pitching in.
0:17:26 > 0:17:29Their new granddaughter is too small to be here,
0:17:29 > 0:17:33but there's a team of other little helpers.
0:17:33 > 0:17:35How important will it be for them to have this room back again
0:17:35 > 0:17:38- and feel like home? - Oh, really important.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41- They're here all the time. - Absolutely.- Kids running round,
0:17:41 > 0:17:42and it'll be fantastic.
0:17:42 > 0:17:46You think this will be one little nice thing that's happened recently?
0:17:46 > 0:17:50- And they really, really do deserve it.- A lovely couple, aren't they?
0:17:51 > 0:17:54But one of our little volunteers has her own design ideas.
0:17:54 > 0:18:00- Try and make it smoother.- Yes. I might help Tara out a bit.
0:18:00 > 0:18:03- Tara.- There's quite a bit on the floor there, Tara.
0:18:03 > 0:18:05Quite a lot. And now on my arm.
0:18:06 > 0:18:09'What a mess! This could take some time.'
0:18:09 > 0:18:10Look at your shoe!
0:18:16 > 0:18:17What a transformation!
0:18:17 > 0:18:19The security fix is almost complete
0:18:19 > 0:18:21and the inside's coming along nicely.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24But as you can see, still loads of work still needs to be done,
0:18:24 > 0:18:27so those painters are going to be here well into the night.
0:18:27 > 0:18:31Hopefully, it will all be done before Harry and Linda get home tomorrow.
0:18:35 > 0:18:40It's 8am, and as Leeds wakes up, the police have made a breakthrough.
0:18:40 > 0:18:42Their work has led to them arresting someone
0:18:42 > 0:18:44in connection with the burglary.
0:18:44 > 0:18:47A suspect was identified for these offences
0:18:47 > 0:18:50and the suspect was arrested. He is now
0:18:50 > 0:18:53on police bail, pending the outcome of the forensic results
0:18:53 > 0:18:56on the gloves that were recovered near to the scene.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58But as soon as we have that DNA profile recovered,
0:18:58 > 0:19:01that will be put against him, as a suspect,
0:19:01 > 0:19:03to see if we can find a match with it.
0:19:03 > 0:19:05If that's the case, then he will be rearrested
0:19:05 > 0:19:07and brought in for further interviewing.
0:19:07 > 0:19:11So the DNA could be all important in solving this case.
0:19:12 > 0:19:17At the house, our team of helpers got up early to get the job finished.
0:19:17 > 0:19:21They've only got a few hours until Harry and Linda return home.
0:19:21 > 0:19:24The lights are going up, the alarm is being wired in,
0:19:24 > 0:19:28and the living room is coming on.
0:19:28 > 0:19:30Full wall in half an hour. I'm happy with that.
0:19:32 > 0:19:34The wallpaper's also up,
0:19:34 > 0:19:37so now Liam can put the finishing touches to the alarm.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40This alarm is a unique piece of kit which will call
0:19:40 > 0:19:44your friends or family if there's a break-in.
0:19:44 > 0:19:46We've gone for a wireless system in this house.
0:19:46 > 0:19:50We've tried to keep it really simple for the couple.
0:19:50 > 0:19:54It literally sets and un-sets, like a car alarm would.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57Basically, we've got two buttons on here.
0:19:57 > 0:20:01We've got a set button and an unset button.
0:20:01 > 0:20:03We've also got the option of a panic system.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06So by pressing the two buttons together,
0:20:06 > 0:20:08we can send a panic signal through.
0:20:08 > 0:20:09When it is triggered,
0:20:09 > 0:20:12the alarm system will dial three pre-set numbers.
0:20:12 > 0:20:14So if the alarm is activated,
0:20:14 > 0:20:17three numbers that Harry and Linda can choose
0:20:17 > 0:20:20- will be alerted that the alarm has gone off.- Yes.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22- Like family members or friends. - Yeah, definitely.
0:20:22 > 0:20:24So, I'm in bed, I hear a noise downstairs,
0:20:24 > 0:20:27I think there's an intruder there, I press these two buttons.
0:20:27 > 0:20:29HIGH-PITCHED ALARM WAILS The alarm system goes off.
0:20:29 > 0:20:32The alarm system works.
0:20:32 > 0:20:36We can silence that alarm by just pressing the unset button.
0:20:36 > 0:20:37That's now gone off.
0:20:37 > 0:20:40And in a couple of seconds, we should get a phone...
0:20:40 > 0:20:43And it says here, "Intruder Alarm".
0:20:43 > 0:20:45What a brilliant system!
0:20:45 > 0:20:48And it's nice and simple to use, and the best thing is,
0:20:48 > 0:20:50it's not going to cost them any money every month, is it?
0:20:50 > 0:20:52That call's come off their phoneline.
0:20:52 > 0:20:56It's literally a five-pence call from a standard landline.
0:20:57 > 0:20:58Excellent.
0:20:58 > 0:21:02We're into the final countdown, and inside, it's a hive of activity.
0:21:04 > 0:21:06The floor's going back down.
0:21:06 > 0:21:09Pete's just building a table for the girls.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12A couple of curtain pulls to put up, pictures, and then that's us.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17That's it.
0:21:21 > 0:21:23You'd never know now. Don't tell anybody.
0:21:26 > 0:21:28Job done, and just in the nick of time.
0:21:28 > 0:21:29But my main concern has always been
0:21:29 > 0:21:31the security of Harry and Linda's home.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34We've installed a state-of-the-art burglar alarm,
0:21:34 > 0:21:36put up dusk-till-dawn lighting,
0:21:36 > 0:21:40and added locks to the vulnerable windows.
0:21:40 > 0:21:44PC Paul Croft is back to take a look and he seems particularly impressed
0:21:44 > 0:21:47by the changes at the rear of the house.
0:21:47 > 0:21:49This is the back door, which was the area
0:21:49 > 0:21:51that the intruders forced their way in through.
0:21:51 > 0:21:54At the time of the burglary, there was literally
0:21:54 > 0:21:58no security on the top part of this door whatsoever, as you identified.
0:21:58 > 0:22:02- That's right, yes.- We've put in this five-lever lock here,
0:22:02 > 0:22:03a British Standard lock.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06Is this an improvement on what you saw before?
0:22:06 > 0:22:08It is a vast improvement, as you've said.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11If you remember, we pushed it and it just simply fell open.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14As you can see there, you know, it's nice and solid now.
0:22:14 > 0:22:16So what we've done to that is absolutely excellent.
0:22:16 > 0:22:19They're not the most secure doors anyway, the stable door,
0:22:19 > 0:22:22so that's always something to bear in mind if you're putting a door in.
0:22:22 > 0:22:25People like them, but security-wise, they're at the lower end of the scale
0:22:25 > 0:22:30and quite difficult to secure. You must bear things like that in mind.
0:22:30 > 0:22:33But as long as it's a significant improvement on what we had before,
0:22:33 > 0:22:35then that's going to be good for Linda and Harry.
0:22:35 > 0:22:40- We've certainly achieved that, yes. - Excellent. I think they're nearly here, so let's go and see them.
0:22:45 > 0:22:47Harry and Linda are home,
0:22:47 > 0:22:50but what are they going to make of all our hard work?
0:22:50 > 0:22:52- Come on up, Harry, how are you doing?- Very well, sir.
0:22:52 > 0:22:54- You're all right? - A little apprehensive.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56Apprehensive. Linda, how are you doing?
0:22:56 > 0:22:58- Hiya. I'm fine. - Are you all right?- Yes.
0:22:58 > 0:23:01- Good to see you. How's your leg? - Er, it's there!
0:23:01 > 0:23:05- All right? Well, we've made a few changes on your house.- Right.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07Let's start with the front.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10You can see in the corner there,
0:23:10 > 0:23:12you've got a brand-new intruder alarm.
0:23:12 > 0:23:15In darkness, you can see it flashing away,
0:23:15 > 0:23:18so it's going to alert anyone to know that this house is secure.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21Harry, we've also put in a sensor in your garage there,
0:23:21 > 0:23:24so all your stuff inside's also protected by the alarm.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26Obviously, that's going to set the alarm off.
0:23:26 > 0:23:29A nice new light as well. Look at that light there.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31It's what we call a dusk-until-dawn-style light,
0:23:31 > 0:23:33so it's going to give a nice gentle light round here,
0:23:33 > 0:23:37so no-one can hide around, sneak and get up to no good in the darkness.
0:23:37 > 0:23:39- That's good.- All right? If we go round the back of the house,
0:23:39 > 0:23:41there's a few changes we've made there too.
0:23:44 > 0:23:47Here's the back door, obviously, that was attacked.
0:23:47 > 0:23:50- You can see here, we've put... - You've put another lock on there.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53There's a much, much stronger lock on here
0:23:53 > 0:23:55and we've also put a little adjoining part on here,
0:23:55 > 0:23:59- so you can actually open it as one door now, if you want. OK?- Yeah.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02We've also, just so you know, put some window locks on your conservatory,
0:24:02 > 0:24:05because you had a couple of windows that looked like they'd had a bit of play.
0:24:05 > 0:24:07I think they'd tried to get in there.
0:24:07 > 0:24:09It looks like they have, so we've put some window locks on,
0:24:09 > 0:24:11so there's no movement in there.
0:24:11 > 0:24:13- Good. Yeah. - That's brilliant, yes.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16- So that's the outside. - It's getting better and better.
0:24:16 > 0:24:20- Oh, no.- Do you want to have a look on the inside?- Oh, yes!
0:24:21 > 0:24:25This couple's home was completely ransacked by the burglars,
0:24:25 > 0:24:28who heartlessly stole some of their most precious possessions.
0:24:28 > 0:24:31But I'm hoping all our efforts will help put some joy
0:24:31 > 0:24:33back into their lives.
0:24:34 > 0:24:35We've done the outside for security,
0:24:35 > 0:24:39but as a little extra, we wanted to give you your home back.
0:24:39 > 0:24:42- Oh! Look at this.- And we want to give you somewhere where you can relax
0:24:42 > 0:24:44- and try and ignore what happened. - Oh!
0:24:46 > 0:24:47Here you are, Harry, come in.
0:24:47 > 0:24:51- Because we know how much it upset you.- Oh, I can't believe it.
0:24:51 > 0:24:53We wanted to try and get...
0:24:53 > 0:24:55- That wall!- ..the memories of the burglary out as much as possible
0:24:55 > 0:24:59and try and put some nice memories back in, so you can enjoy this.
0:24:59 > 0:25:01You've certainly done that, my friend, you've certainly done that.
0:25:01 > 0:25:04We couldn't think what you'd do that'd make it...
0:25:04 > 0:25:08- But it's incredible, isn't it? - Absolutely brilliant. I just...
0:25:09 > 0:25:13You've never seen me lost for words, have you?
0:25:13 > 0:25:16I'm stuck for words, I'm absolutely stuck for words.
0:25:16 > 0:25:19- It's incredible, isn't it? - Absolutely fabulous.
0:25:22 > 0:25:24Oh, I can't believe it.
0:25:24 > 0:25:26You've got your new table and chairs over there.
0:25:26 > 0:25:28Oh! Oh, yeah. Look.
0:25:28 > 0:25:31Have a look on the wall over there at some pictures as well.
0:25:31 > 0:25:34- Oh, they're lovely. Oh, it's absolutely...- Isn't it?
0:25:34 > 0:25:37I just can't... It's so nice.
0:25:37 > 0:25:41You guys have had the most rotten luck, to say the least.
0:25:41 > 0:25:44This has gone a long way to putting it right, hasn't it, pet?
0:25:44 > 0:25:47- Oh, it has.- A long way. - It really has, it's so nice.
0:25:47 > 0:25:50- But the arches have gone, Harry. - I know, yes.- Yay!
0:25:50 > 0:25:52The arches have gone. Is that all right?
0:25:52 > 0:25:53You thought you'd miss the arches?
0:25:53 > 0:25:56I don't miss them at all. That's far better.
0:25:56 > 0:25:58It looks absolutely incredible, it does.
0:25:58 > 0:26:01Well, none of this would have been possible
0:26:01 > 0:26:05without the help of your friend Jean, your family,
0:26:05 > 0:26:07and also, loads of local tradesmen and women
0:26:07 > 0:26:09that have dropped everything, after they heard
0:26:09 > 0:26:11what happened, and I got on the phone
0:26:11 > 0:26:15and told them and they came straight round and made this possible.
0:26:15 > 0:26:17Many of them have worked well into the night to do this.
