0:00:03 > 0:00:06In the UK there's a burglary every 45 seconds.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24But right across the country
0:00:24 > 0:00:26dedicated police teams are on the offensive
0:00:26 > 0:00:30waging war against the criminals who steal from local homeowners.
0:00:30 > 0:00:34Police! Open the door otherwise entry's going to have to be forced.
0:00:34 > 0:00:39For the victims of these crimes it can take months, even years,
0:00:39 > 0:00:41to come to terms with what's happened.
0:00:41 > 0:00:45It's so easy for people to break in and steal property.
0:00:45 > 0:00:49It's too easy and I think these people who do these crimes, they know that.
0:00:49 > 0:00:53But in this series we're about to show them and you
0:00:53 > 0:00:55how we can all beat the burglars.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58This is Crime Scene Rescue.
0:01:03 > 0:01:07Father of three, Mahmood, is a probation officer in West Yorkshire.
0:01:08 > 0:01:12Day-in, day-out, Mahmood spends much of his time trying to get
0:01:12 > 0:01:15offenders back on the straight and narrow.
0:01:15 > 0:01:17But now he has become a victim of the criminals.
0:01:18 > 0:01:22I talk to burglars, I talk to people in the criminal system.
0:01:22 > 0:01:23I feel angry.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27While the police hit the streets to solve this crime,
0:01:27 > 0:01:30I'm desperate to make his house feel safe and secure again.
0:01:32 > 0:01:34What can I say? Thank you, very much.
0:01:38 > 0:01:40Last year, West Yorkshire Police
0:01:40 > 0:01:43faced one of the highest burglary rates in the UK.
0:01:45 > 0:01:49But it's a crime which the police in this region are working hard
0:01:49 > 0:01:52to beat, and I'm joining them on the frontline to see
0:01:52 > 0:01:54how they are tackling the problem.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57While I'm here, I also want to do all I can
0:01:57 > 0:02:01to help the local victims who have had their homes violated.
0:02:02 > 0:02:05OPERATOR: 'This is West Yorkshire Police. What's the emergency?'
0:02:09 > 0:02:12It's early in the morning and a burglary call has just come in.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14'Are you actually inside the house?'
0:02:19 > 0:02:23Probation officer, Mahmood, arrived home after working a night shift
0:02:23 > 0:02:27only to discover the window at the back of his house had been smashed in.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34PC Roger Copeland is first on the scene.
0:02:34 > 0:02:38From what I can gather there's a TV missing and a bike.
0:02:39 > 0:02:44Mahmood's iPod has also been stolen, along with his TV and bike.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47- Did you say they'd used a stone? - Yeah, they're on the floor.
0:02:47 > 0:02:49It looks like they've smashed it with that.
0:02:49 > 0:02:51Potentially there might be some sort of evidence
0:02:51 > 0:02:55left on the glass like fibres, or skin, or blood that I can't see.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58I'll request a Scenes of Crimes Officer who'll do the forensics,
0:02:58 > 0:03:01the fingerprints and take footprints. Are you going to be in all day?
0:03:01 > 0:03:04I was going to go to bed but obviously I won't be now.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07What a nightmare for Mahmood.
0:03:07 > 0:03:08After a long night's work,
0:03:08 > 0:03:12he's now being denied the sleep he so desperately needs.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15It's vital every piece of evidence is gathered
0:03:15 > 0:03:19and West Yorkshire's forensic team is quick to arrive and comb the scene.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23Meanwhile, there's already been a breakthrough in the investigation.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26A nearby neighbour may have been a witness to the burglary.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29I just happened to glance over at the other side of the street
0:03:29 > 0:03:33and I saw this lad, a young lad probably about early to mid-20s,
0:03:33 > 0:03:36coming out of the front door with a bicycle.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39But he didn't act like he was suspicious from it,
0:03:39 > 0:03:43so I thought maybe he's one of your mates and he's popped round or something,
0:03:43 > 0:03:45and then he just rode off on his bike.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48He was casually coming out as if he was just leaving the house,
0:03:48 > 0:03:49just...just casually.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53Unfortunately, criminals often get away with burglaries
0:03:53 > 0:03:54because they act with confidence.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58For the moment the police have done all they can.
0:03:58 > 0:04:02The Scenes of Crime have attended and got some footprints off the floor inside,
0:04:02 > 0:04:06a witness nearby who saw somebody leaving with a bike.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09Based on the description he's given us, hopefully the witness can
0:04:09 > 0:04:12view some photographs at some point and he may pick somebody out
0:04:12 > 0:04:16so it's quite a good possible line of enquiry for us to follow up.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19It's a positive start to the police investigation
0:04:19 > 0:04:21but I'm sickened that criminals could do something like this
0:04:21 > 0:04:24to a caring probation officer.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27The break in has come as a huge shock to Mahmood,
0:04:27 > 0:04:28who is clearly shaken.
0:04:28 > 0:04:33Right now, I'm angry that somebody's actually been in here.
0:04:33 > 0:04:35I'm also thinking that maybe they may come back,
0:04:35 > 0:04:38so there's an element of being frightened as well.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41I just recently purchased this house.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43I'm just starting to make some home improvements.
0:04:43 > 0:04:45I should have got an alarm fitted...
0:04:47 > 0:04:50And done some more, some locks on the windows.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53It's too late now.
0:04:53 > 0:04:57I feel really sorry for him, and I'm determined to do everything I can
0:04:57 > 0:05:00to make sure he feels safe in his own home again.
0:05:01 > 0:05:05My top priority right now is to secure the smashed window
0:05:05 > 0:05:09so I've arranged for John the glazier to come straight round to work his magic.
0:05:12 > 0:05:14With the house secured,
0:05:14 > 0:05:18at least Mahmood might be able to get that much needed sleep.
0:05:25 > 0:05:30It's a new day and I've returned to see Mahmood with a plan of action.
0:05:30 > 0:05:34His children, who live with their mum, have also come to visit.
0:05:34 > 0:05:37Thank goodness they weren't here when the burglary happened.
0:05:37 > 0:05:41There'll be plenty more visits though, so it's still a real worry.
0:05:41 > 0:05:43So, Mahmood, the first thing I've got to ask is,
0:05:43 > 0:05:46how have you been since the burglary?
0:05:46 > 0:05:49Erm...I've been suspicious towards people.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53If I see a car outside I'm thinking, is it them?
0:05:53 > 0:05:55I suppose I'm feeling a little bit paranoid about people.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58I've been occupied with the kids and that's taking things off my mind.
0:05:58 > 0:06:02When they go back I suppose I'll have more time to think about it.
0:06:02 > 0:06:03Now obviously you are a father,
0:06:03 > 0:06:06you've got your three kids who have come up today to see you.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08They were not here at the time of the offence though.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11I think it would have been a lot worse if they'd have been here.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13I wouldn't like to think about it.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15I'm just glad that they wasn't here.
0:06:15 > 0:06:19Sammy, you and your sisters were home when you heard what happened
0:06:19 > 0:06:23to your dad's house. What was that like when you heard the news?
0:06:23 > 0:06:25When I first heard it I didn't believe it
0:06:25 > 0:06:28because he's always saying that we watch TV too much,
0:06:28 > 0:06:30so I thought he might have hidden it somewhere.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34You came and your telly was gone. When you came to visit your dad, the telly was gone.
0:06:34 > 0:06:39You've had some lovely neighbours that have offered to help you out, especially with the television.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42Well, yeah, friends. I've got the TV there now, that's come from a friend.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45"Well, your children are coming over, you haven't got a TV to watch."
0:06:45 > 0:06:47Friends and neighbours, they are really helpful.
0:06:47 > 0:06:51That's got to be quite nice to know that neighbours are offering help like that
0:06:51 > 0:06:54and to know that they'd be looking out for each other.
0:06:54 > 0:06:57It is. I mean round here the neighbours are good. We all look out for each other.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01- We are on friendly terms and that's how I think it should be.- Absolutely.
0:07:01 > 0:07:07- Security wise, do you think you did as much as you possible could on the house?- I didn't do enough.
0:07:07 > 0:07:09Now my priorities have to change.
0:07:09 > 0:07:14If you want us to, we'd like to help you and to fix this place up
0:07:14 > 0:07:16and make it as safe and secure as we possibly can
0:07:16 > 0:07:19for you and your family.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23Hopefully we'd eliminate the chance of this ever happening again.
0:07:23 > 0:07:24I'd appreciate that.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28Well, it sounds like Mahmood's got some really nice neighbours,
0:07:28 > 0:07:31which is great, but what he needs now is some tradesmen and women
0:07:31 > 0:07:33to come round here and fix this place up.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36I need to get on the phone and make that happen.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40Mahmood is clearly distressed at what's happened
0:07:40 > 0:07:44and it's terrible he no longer feels comfortable in his own home.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47I want to fix that by overhauling his security
0:07:47 > 0:07:52and transforming his lounge in a bid to remove the sour memories.
0:07:52 > 0:07:56But I can't do this all on my own, it's time to rally the troops.
0:07:58 > 0:08:01Hi Judith, it's Rav. Hi Ian, it's Rav.
0:08:01 > 0:08:02Hi Neil, it's Rav.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05I'm after a bit of a favour from you, I really need some help
0:08:05 > 0:08:08and I think you might be the man to do it for me.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11There's a fella that I've met called Mahmood that's just been burgled.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15Do you reckon you could have a look at the room and see if there's anything you can do for us?
0:08:15 > 0:08:19Neil, that sounds absolutely brilliant. I'll see you there and see what we can do for him.
0:08:19 > 0:08:21You star. Thanks Ian, thanks for your help.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26While my gang of community spirited trades people
0:08:26 > 0:08:29prepare for action, the police have been attempting
0:08:29 > 0:08:33to track down the burglars who stole Mahmood's TV, bike and iPod.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38The forensics team have made an imprint of the footwear mark
0:08:38 > 0:08:40found at Mahmood's home.
0:08:40 > 0:08:43This has been uploaded to a police-wide database.
0:08:43 > 0:08:46Hopefully this will provide a match to another crime
0:08:46 > 0:08:48and a suspect can be targeted.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52Meanwhile, the police are also busy questioning local known criminals
0:08:52 > 0:08:55fitting the description given by an eyewitness.
0:08:56 > 0:09:00Back at the house, it's time to crack on with the security upgrade.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03First things first, I need some expert security advice
0:09:03 > 0:09:07and crime prevention specialist Dave Harrison is the man to provide it.
0:09:08 > 0:09:12The first impression is that it does need, you know, a security review.
0:09:12 > 0:09:16We've overgrown vegetation at both sides of the door.
0:09:16 > 0:09:18That affords a hiding place, you know,
0:09:18 > 0:09:21for the offenders to the front window.
0:09:21 > 0:09:23Get that trimmed down, a simple solution.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26What I do like to see, is this hedge has already been trimmed.
0:09:26 > 0:09:28- Yes. It's very good, yes.- Yeah.
0:09:28 > 0:09:30The front of Mahmood's home is fairly secure
0:09:30 > 0:09:34although there are still things we can do to make it safer.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37However, the back of this house remains a concern.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40The first thing that strikes me about this is, I'd imagine
0:09:40 > 0:09:44it's very dark at night-time because there's no lighting here whatsoever
0:09:44 > 0:09:47and I'd imagine that is something you'd really like to see changed.
0:09:47 > 0:09:51Yeah, sure. Some lighting put underneath the eaves of the house
0:09:51 > 0:09:55so that the offender can't get to the lighting system is very important.
0:09:55 > 0:09:58- What about an alarm? - There's no alarm on this property.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01- Do you think we should be thinking about that?- Absolutely.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04The offenders have actually come round here and obviously felt at ease,
0:10:04 > 0:10:06so we have to change that.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08I think by having an alarm system to start off with
0:10:08 > 0:10:11so the offender will see the house is protected
0:10:11 > 0:10:15- and they've taken security seriously.- OK, Dave.
0:10:15 > 0:10:17Well, certainly loads for us to be getting on with.
0:10:17 > 0:10:21I think those small changes are going to make a big difference to Mahmood and his family living here.
0:10:25 > 0:10:29The first tradespeople from my team of volunteers have arrived.
0:10:29 > 0:10:33Electrician Ian is straight to work fitting motion sensor lights
0:10:33 > 0:10:35to the exterior of the property.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38And the secret is to fit these lights high up
0:10:38 > 0:10:40so the criminals can't reach them.
0:10:40 > 0:10:42Back at ground level,
0:10:42 > 0:10:45locksmith Jason is changing the lock on the front door.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49What these do, they actually stop the burglars getting
0:10:49 > 0:10:51to the vulnerable part of the door,
0:10:51 > 0:10:55so, effectively, they can't get in and burgle people's houses.
0:10:58 > 0:10:59Done!
0:10:59 > 0:11:03When probation officer Mahmood comes home after a hard shift at work,
0:11:03 > 0:11:08he likes to unwind and spend quality time with his children in his lounge.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11But now his living room has been tarnished
0:11:11 > 0:11:14after the burglars smashed their way in.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17Where the window was smashed I tend to draw the curtain so I don't have to see it,
0:11:17 > 0:11:20and try and get it as normal-looking as possible.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25I try and, like, erase it out of my mind.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27That's my way of dealing with it.
0:11:27 > 0:11:31It's essential for me to help Mahmood feel at ease
0:11:31 > 0:11:35in his own home again, so I've enlisted designer Judith Harrop
0:11:35 > 0:11:39to help find a way to remove all the bad associations.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41So, Judith, you've had a look around the room,
0:11:41 > 0:11:44you know this is a family room where they all like to spend time together,
0:11:44 > 0:11:47and you also know this is where the burglary actually took place.
0:11:47 > 0:11:50What do you think you can do for Mahmood and the family
0:11:50 > 0:11:53to change this and, hopefully, take some of those memories away?
0:11:53 > 0:11:56Well, we're going to add to what he has here already.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59I think some new cushions on the sofa will be really good.
0:11:59 > 0:12:03I think we're going to change the curtains, put some new prints on the wall
0:12:03 > 0:12:07and some new accessories, maybe, bring it more up to date.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10And we've got to remember this isn't just about Mahmood,
0:12:10 > 0:12:12he has family that comes and stays with him
0:12:12 > 0:12:15so we want to make it really comfortable for the children too.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18OK, Judith, that sounds good. Now, can you get it all done
0:12:18 > 0:12:22- in the short space of time we've given you?- Rav, we have to!
0:12:22 > 0:12:24That's the only answer I would have accepted.
0:12:25 > 0:12:28The changes here could go a long way to getting our probation officer
0:12:28 > 0:12:30back on track.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33He works so tirelessly trying to help people but I know that
0:12:33 > 0:12:36being burgled has really knocked his faith in human nature.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40I suppose at the moment I feel like that
0:12:40 > 0:12:43I personally am knocking my head against a wall.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46I talk to burglars, I talk to people with, you know,
0:12:46 > 0:12:49in the criminal system.
0:12:52 > 0:12:53I don't...
0:12:54 > 0:12:56I feel like I'm...
0:12:56 > 0:12:57I feel angry.
0:13:03 > 0:13:06I'm doing everything I can to help Mahmood and the police are too.
0:13:06 > 0:13:10They're out in force on the streets of his neighbourhood.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12We all know why we're here.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15We have had a burglary, we do have a suspect description
0:13:15 > 0:13:20by one of the neighbours, we are looking for any further witnesses
0:13:20 > 0:13:22that may have seen someone around that time.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25You've all got your own addresses that you need to go and visit,
0:13:25 > 0:13:28just get as much information as you can.
0:13:28 > 0:13:31Local residents have arrived home from work now
0:13:31 > 0:13:34so it's a perfect time for the police to catch them in.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37The officers are talking to residents to see if they have
0:13:37 > 0:13:40any information relating to Mahmood's burglary,
0:13:40 > 0:13:43and they're also advising them on their own home security
0:13:43 > 0:13:46so they won't become victims themselves.
0:13:46 > 0:13:48Because something has happened in the area,
0:13:48 > 0:13:51we're offering a free security assessment to everyone in the area.
0:13:51 > 0:13:54I could have a quick look round, see if I could suggest something
0:13:54 > 0:13:56that you're looking at to improve your security.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59- Would you be interested in me doing that for you now?- Yes. Yes.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02It's always wise to remain vigilant
0:14:02 > 0:14:05but hopefully the increased police presence
0:14:05 > 0:14:08around the neighbourhood, will help deter any would-be burglars.
0:14:11 > 0:14:14It's a cold morning and Mahmood is preparing to leave his home
0:14:14 > 0:14:19so my team of tradespeople can take it over for the final part of the transformation.
0:14:19 > 0:14:22But the poor chap is still feeling really raw.
0:14:22 > 0:14:26It's been a difficult time at the moment,
0:14:26 > 0:14:30considering what's happened and I just hope that, you know,
0:14:30 > 0:14:33something good will come out of this
0:14:33 > 0:14:37and that I can get over the psychological element really, that's the main thing for me.
0:14:38 > 0:14:40I just hope that, you know, looking forward,
0:14:40 > 0:14:43that I actually feel a lot safer in the house.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48I'm determined to give him back his peace of mind
0:14:48 > 0:14:50and put the heart back into his home.
0:14:55 > 0:14:59The second wave of my volunteers are arriving
0:14:59 > 0:15:02and they've got one thing on their mind and that's to help.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05OK, everyone, thank you for coming round so quickly.
0:15:05 > 0:15:08The house behind me here is Mahmood's, or Moody to his friends,
0:15:08 > 0:15:11who, like you, is a hard working fellow.
0:15:11 > 0:15:14Whilst he was out at work, unfortunately, he was burgled.
0:15:14 > 0:15:16Now, as you can imagine it has really upset him
0:15:16 > 0:15:19especially when he comes home and sits in the living area
0:15:19 > 0:15:23where he knows the intruders had come in and stolen his stuff.
0:15:23 > 0:15:25So, with your help I want to change that.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28I want to fix the place up, I want to make it much safer
0:15:28 > 0:15:31and much more secure than it currently is.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33So, together I think we can do this.
0:15:33 > 0:15:35He's a deserving fellow, he needs your help
0:15:35 > 0:15:38but what we don't have is a lot of time to do it.
0:15:38 > 0:15:40So let's get in there, and let's get this place fixed up.
0:15:40 > 0:15:43- Ready? - ALL: Yeah!
0:15:43 > 0:15:45We need to get straight on
0:15:45 > 0:15:49and first order of business is to sort out that smashed window.
0:15:51 > 0:15:54It's not just the broken glass that's coming out,
0:15:54 > 0:15:56Mahmood's fireplace is too.
0:15:56 > 0:15:59I'm actually making this fireplace look worse before it gets better.
0:15:59 > 0:16:02We're going for a chunkier, Moroccan kind of feel.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04We're going to paint it. Priming it at the moment
0:16:04 > 0:16:07and then we're going to paint it and distress it,
0:16:07 > 0:16:09and change the whole nature of it.
0:16:13 > 0:16:17My trusted locksmith, Jason, has been investigating all of the windows.
0:16:17 > 0:16:20And in the bathroom, he's found something that troubles him.
0:16:20 > 0:16:24Outside, if I just open the window,
0:16:24 > 0:16:29there is a flat roof and the flat roof could be classed as an access point.
0:16:29 > 0:16:31So, what could happen with just a push button,
0:16:31 > 0:16:34if the burglar smashes the glass or anything like that,
0:16:34 > 0:16:37they can just basically reach in and open the window, like so.
0:16:37 > 0:16:41What I'm doing effectively is changing the handle on the window
0:16:41 > 0:16:44from a push button handle to a locking handle.
0:16:44 > 0:16:48With it being key operated, a burglar can't just break the glass
0:16:48 > 0:16:51and open the window, they physically need a key.
0:16:55 > 0:16:59Meanwhile, downstairs, I'm glad to see that the new window is going in.
0:16:59 > 0:17:03We've used toughened glass and it's a definite improvement.
0:17:03 > 0:17:07Stuart, the window looks fantastic. You've put this in now and it's made a difference.
0:17:07 > 0:17:10You had a bit of work to do though because whoever broke in
0:17:10 > 0:17:12actually broke this as well, didn't they?
0:17:12 > 0:17:15- Yeah, just standing on it. - But that's been replaced as well.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17All been replaced, yeah, and put back.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20Now the one thing that we also wanted to get done on this window
0:17:20 > 0:17:23was locks as well, proper window locks.
0:17:23 > 0:17:25So, now that you've managed to get the pane in
0:17:25 > 0:17:27they can finally get on with that as well.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30We can actually see it going on in the background.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32Jason's doing that so that will make this window
0:17:32 > 0:17:35- much safer than it was previously.- Oh, yes.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39The local tradespeople are getting stuck in but they're not alone.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42Two of Mahmood's neighbours, Richard and Denis,
0:17:42 > 0:17:46have come along to help as they know how hard he's been hit by the burglary.
0:17:46 > 0:17:48Transforming the room by doing all this,
0:17:48 > 0:17:50- do you think it's going to be a good thing?- I think so, yeah.
0:17:50 > 0:17:53I think it's definitely going to be a good thing for him, yeah.
0:17:53 > 0:17:56It were a constant reminder in seeing his living room, you know,
0:17:56 > 0:18:00how it was and obviously with his window as well,
0:18:00 > 0:18:03it were a constant reminder and he can sort of put it to bed now a bit.
0:18:03 > 0:18:07So, we've got 24 hours to turn this place around.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10I think we've got to get our skates on, haven't we?
0:18:10 > 0:18:14- All right. I'll let you get back to work. Denis, you've missed a bit. - Have I?
0:18:16 > 0:18:20The living room is really coming on, as is the security upgrade.
0:18:20 > 0:18:21A new alarm has been installed
0:18:21 > 0:18:25and new locks have been fitted on Mahmood's windows.
0:18:25 > 0:18:29But I'm wondering how things are going back in the lounge.
0:18:29 > 0:18:31Now, Judith, you won't mind me saying I have just taken a look
0:18:31 > 0:18:34in his living room and it's slightly different to what I remember.
0:18:34 > 0:18:37There's no furniture there because it's all behind you.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40It is. The furniture's all in the garden at the moment.
0:18:40 > 0:18:42- And lots of work still to be done. - Lots still.
0:18:42 > 0:18:45- At least before he returns.- Yeah.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48We've got dining chairs to re-cover, we've got cushions to make,
0:18:48 > 0:18:51we've got fireplaces to finish painting.
0:18:51 > 0:18:53The guys inside have got the decorating to do.
0:18:53 > 0:18:57- There's quite a lot to do yet.- But you're confident?- I am, yes.- Good.
0:18:59 > 0:19:01Well, it's good to see that Judith is hard at work
0:19:01 > 0:19:05and the police have been on the case with their investigation too.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09They've made progress on identifying potential suspects,
0:19:09 > 0:19:11following a tip-off.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15We've received some community intelligence in relation
0:19:15 > 0:19:17to one particular suspect.
0:19:17 > 0:19:20His solicitor's been in contact with ourselves
0:19:20 > 0:19:24and he's going to be attending voluntarily at the police station,
0:19:24 > 0:19:27hopefully, this afternoon, where he will then be arrested.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30He'll be interviewed in relation to Mahmood's burglary.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33It's great news that the police have a lead on someone
0:19:33 > 0:19:36and that their commitment is paying off.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46It's the final day and as Leeds commuters fight their way through
0:19:46 > 0:19:49the morning rush hour, my team of local heroes
0:19:49 > 0:19:52prepare for one last challenge at Mahmood's house.
0:19:55 > 0:19:58Our locksmith is continuing his crusade to update the security
0:19:58 > 0:20:01by making sure Mahmood's side entrance,
0:20:01 > 0:20:04which he uses as his main door, is secure.
0:20:04 > 0:20:07And ideally, this should have a minimum of two locks.
0:20:10 > 0:20:13Back in the lounge, the painting has been finished
0:20:13 > 0:20:15so it's time for the carpet to go down.
0:20:16 > 0:20:20Meanwhile outside, I'm looking at a high-tech bit of kit
0:20:20 > 0:20:22which adds more security to this home.
0:20:22 > 0:20:28To me, these look like a sort of basic PIR sensor, a Passive Infrared one.
0:20:28 > 0:20:30You're quite right, it's just a normal PIR
0:20:30 > 0:20:32that sits externally around a property,
0:20:32 > 0:20:35but what they're actually controlling is a plug socket
0:20:35 > 0:20:38that can be plugged into any socket inside the house.
0:20:38 > 0:20:41They can control any electrical appliance like a light,
0:20:41 > 0:20:43a radio, or a television.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46So, if anybody goes past this it breaks the beam on a PIR,
0:20:46 > 0:20:49it will activate the light and switch lights on inside the house.
0:20:49 > 0:20:53Such a clever idea. He's going to be much safer after all this.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55Yes, he will be.
0:20:55 > 0:20:58Well, Mahmood will be home soon, and time is running out.
0:20:58 > 0:21:02Luckily, the furniture is back and the blinds are going up.
0:21:02 > 0:21:06It's nearly there now, it looks amazing. What's still to go?
0:21:06 > 0:21:10We've got some pictures to hang, and it's just basic dressing
0:21:10 > 0:21:14- and a light fitting to go up. - Nearly there. It's not been easy.
0:21:14 > 0:21:15Oh! I'm so pleased with this.
0:21:15 > 0:21:19Now, that's his original fitting but you've painted that yourself.
0:21:19 > 0:21:22- Well I've had some help!- It's been a big team effort, hasn't it?
0:21:22 > 0:21:26- It has been a huge team effort, yes. - Yeah. Everyone pulling together.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30Even the fireplace has been put in, partly by our security expert!
0:21:30 > 0:21:33- So everyone's helping out. Cheers, Jason.- You're welcome.
0:21:33 > 0:21:36All right then, Judith, I know you've got loads to get on with.
0:21:36 > 0:21:38- I really need to get on. - Yes. Yeah, we need to get on.
0:21:38 > 0:21:41Mahmood is due back, I'm afraid, in not too long away at all so...
0:21:41 > 0:21:45- How long have we got? - I'm not going to tell you because I don't want you to cry.
0:21:45 > 0:21:47- You get on with it Judith, you finish off.- OK.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50I'm sure he's going to love his room when he comes back.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53While Judith adds the finishing touches on the lounge,
0:21:53 > 0:21:56crime prevention expert Dave Harrison has returned
0:21:56 > 0:22:00to review the mammoth security upgrade we've done on Mahmood's house.
0:22:01 > 0:22:05Sensor motion lights have been installed outside.
0:22:05 > 0:22:08A top of the range alarm system has been added.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11The locks have been checked out and updated.
0:22:12 > 0:22:14We've trimmed the bushes in the front garden
0:22:14 > 0:22:18so any would-be burglars can't hide behind them.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21The smashed window in the lounge has been replaced.
0:22:22 > 0:22:27And we've even painted Mahmood's drainpipes with anti-climb paint.
0:22:27 > 0:22:28But what does Dave think?
0:22:28 > 0:22:30So after your initial assessment,
0:22:30 > 0:22:34- would you say this is an improvement on it?- Absolutely.
0:22:34 > 0:22:38With all the additional security to the windows, to the doors,
0:22:38 > 0:22:41the lighting, a massive improvement.
0:22:41 > 0:22:43- Good.- Really happy about it. - Well. you're happy...- I am.
0:22:43 > 0:22:47- I hope Mahmood's happy when he comes home.- I'm sure he will be. - I'm sure too. Thanks, Dave.
0:22:50 > 0:22:54'Well, Mahmood is here so we're about to find out.'
0:22:57 > 0:22:59- Welcome back.- Thank you.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01- Right, are you ready to see what we've done to your house?- Yes, I am.
0:23:01 > 0:23:05Well, it's a lot safer than it was when you left.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08- Straight away you can see the new lighting that we've put in.- Yeah.
0:23:08 > 0:23:11That's going to stop anyone coming in and lurking around,
0:23:11 > 0:23:13hiding behind your bushes up to no good.
0:23:13 > 0:23:18Your bushes were overgrown and that might not sound like a security issue, but it was.
0:23:18 > 0:23:20And if you look up there,
0:23:20 > 0:23:22you can see you've got a brand new alarm system.
0:23:22 > 0:23:25I'm sure you noticed that when you first came in.
0:23:25 > 0:23:27When you look at the front of the house it's quite obvious now.
0:23:27 > 0:23:30- It is, yes.- You can see that big box. So that's the front of your house.
0:23:30 > 0:23:35- Let me go round to the back because I want to show you a few more things that we've done. OK?- Yeah.
0:23:37 > 0:23:40Obviously the first thing you've probably noticed round the back
0:23:40 > 0:23:43is the fact that we've fixed that broken window.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46Also, all your windows down here, all those big ones,
0:23:46 > 0:23:49have now been fitted with really good strong window locks
0:23:49 > 0:23:52so no-one can lever open those windows and climb through.
0:23:52 > 0:23:54So that's a good thing.
0:23:54 > 0:23:57We've even put them on the top, on top of your flat roof.
0:23:57 > 0:23:59So, no-one can get in those windows.
0:23:59 > 0:24:03A little climbing aid you previously had which is not your fault,
0:24:03 > 0:24:05it's just the fact that you've had these big drainpipes.
0:24:05 > 0:24:09They've been painted now with a special type of paint, anti-climb paint,
0:24:09 > 0:24:12so no-one's going to be able to wriggle up there, they're just going to slip off.
0:24:12 > 0:24:14And also, you've probably seen it,
0:24:14 > 0:24:17you've got a new light high up on the back of your wall,
0:24:17 > 0:24:19so I'm sure that's peace of mind for you as well.
0:24:19 > 0:24:23- Definitely.- Yeah? Some good changes there?- Yes. Yeah.- Good.
0:24:23 > 0:24:25So Mahmood, that's the outside of your property,
0:24:25 > 0:24:30that's all been done there but there's a little extra.
0:24:31 > 0:24:33Because as well as making you safe and secure
0:24:33 > 0:24:36we also wanted to let you have your home back.
0:24:37 > 0:24:40So, we've done a little something inside your living room.
0:24:40 > 0:24:44- Would you like to have a look at that?- I certainly would.
0:24:44 > 0:24:45A bit nervous?
0:24:45 > 0:24:47Time to see if Mahmood is as happy
0:24:47 > 0:24:50with the transformation of his lounge.
0:24:50 > 0:24:54Since the burglary, his living room had made him depressed.
0:24:54 > 0:24:57Instead of relaxing on his sofa, he's been solemnly staring
0:24:57 > 0:25:01at the smashed window where the burglars broke in.
0:25:01 > 0:25:04We wanted to lift his mood and create a lounge where Mahmood
0:25:04 > 0:25:07can feel comfortable and spend quality time with his children.
0:25:09 > 0:25:11Come with me.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13We've done a little extra on the inside for you.
0:25:16 > 0:25:17Yes! What can I say?
0:25:19 > 0:25:22- What do you think?- I think it's lovely, I really do. Yes.
0:25:22 > 0:25:25- Looks a bit different. doesn't it? - It certainly does.
0:25:25 > 0:25:28Do you think your three kids will like it?
0:25:28 > 0:25:30I think they will. No, it's lovely, it really is.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33- Good.- I'm, er... - Well, that's the main thing.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35- I'm loving it, loving it. - We like that.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41You used to sit there on that sofa and you even said
0:25:41 > 0:25:44that you'd have the curtains closed so you couldn't see that window
0:25:44 > 0:25:47and the fact that they'd broken it, to try and block it out.
0:25:47 > 0:25:50- That's right, yes. - What will you be doing now?
0:25:52 > 0:25:54Well, I'll be living in my own home.
0:25:54 > 0:25:56Walking in here earlier on and seeing this is just,
0:25:56 > 0:25:58it's cheered me up anyway.
0:26:00 > 0:26:02What can I say? Thank you very much. It is... Yes, definitely.
0:26:02 > 0:26:06It's cheered you up and helped take away the memory of what happened
0:26:06 > 0:26:08- when you came home and saw...? - Yeah, definitely.
0:26:08 > 0:26:11Well, there's a lot of people that heard what happened to you
0:26:11 > 0:26:13and they just said they wanted to help.
0:26:13 > 0:26:15They're all local tradesmen and women that rushed round
0:26:15 > 0:26:18and made this possible on the outside and in.
0:26:18 > 0:26:21I know that they would like to say hello to you in person
0:26:21 > 0:26:24- and I'm sure you'd like to say thank you to them yourself.- Yes. I would.
0:26:24 > 0:26:27They're actually gathering right now in your back garden.
0:26:27 > 0:26:29If you follow me.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32- Come with me, and come and meet them.- Right.
0:26:36 > 0:26:37Come with me.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40I told you there was a lot of people that made that possible
0:26:40 > 0:26:42and here are just some of them.
0:26:42 > 0:26:45There's a few people who wanted to say hello to you in person.
0:26:45 > 0:26:47- You recognise a couple of them. - I do, yes.
0:26:47 > 0:26:49Some of your painters here. We've got Denis and Richard.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52Have you been doing some painting, Denis?
0:26:52 > 0:26:55- Meet a few of them, the ones you don't know. - You've done a smashing job in there
0:26:55 > 0:26:58and I really do like it. Yeah, cheers, Denis.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02There we go. He is really happy with that.
0:27:02 > 0:27:05I guess that's just the result of a lot of hard work,
0:27:05 > 0:27:07goodwill and an awful lot of community spirit.
0:27:09 > 0:27:12I'm sure Mahmood's children will also be delighted
0:27:12 > 0:27:15with their new living room on their next visit.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20The suspect who attended the police station regarding the crime
0:27:20 > 0:27:22denied the offence.
0:27:22 > 0:27:25After he couldn't be positively identified in a computer line-up,
0:27:25 > 0:27:28he was released without charge.
0:27:28 > 0:27:31However, the police are still working to solve the case
0:27:31 > 0:27:35and to stamp out future burglaries in West Yorkshire.
0:27:36 > 0:27:39It's absolutely wonderful that the local community have come together
0:27:39 > 0:27:43and worked so hard to put something back into Mahmood's home,
0:27:43 > 0:27:47and actually give him that sense of wellbeing again.
0:27:47 > 0:27:50I'm really pleased with the local community today.
0:27:50 > 0:27:53What we'll do from here on is make sure that we
0:27:53 > 0:27:57go on the proactive approach now and make sure that we have
0:27:57 > 0:28:00plenty of high visibility in the area and make sure that our
0:28:00 > 0:28:04local police officers are visible, speaking to the local community
0:28:04 > 0:28:08with a view to reducing and preventing any further burglaries in this area.
