0:00:02 > 0:00:03SIREN WAILS
0:00:03 > 0:00:07There are 700,000 burglaries in the UK every year.
0:00:20 > 0:00:23But right across the country dedicated police teams
0:00:23 > 0:00:25are on the offensive,
0:00:25 > 0:00:29waging war against the criminals who steal from local homeowners.
0:00:29 > 0:00:31Police! Come and open the door,
0:00:31 > 0:00:34otherwise entry's going to have to be forced.
0:00:34 > 0:00:37For the victims of these crimes it can take months,
0:00:37 > 0:00:39even years to come to terms with what's happened.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42I just feel like... Oh! I feel angry.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47That's the... You know, at the moment,
0:00:47 > 0:00:49anger is what's coming across.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52But in this series, we're about to show them and you
0:00:52 > 0:00:55how we can all beat the burglars.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57This is Crime Scene Rescue.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02On today's show we meet Wendy, Stuart and their daughters.
0:01:04 > 0:01:08A united family brought even closer by a burglary.
0:01:09 > 0:01:13Yeah, family means everything to me. They come first.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15After a day out, they returned home
0:01:15 > 0:01:18to find their house had been ransacked by thieves.
0:01:18 > 0:01:22They'd emptied my jewellery box, everything was gone. Everything.
0:01:22 > 0:01:25My mum's jewellery. My mum died three years ago.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28But as the police hunt for the criminals, it's our mission
0:01:28 > 0:01:31to create a brand new safe haven for this hard working family.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33- Oh, my!- I can't believe it!
0:01:33 > 0:01:36- It's unbelievable. - I can't believe this is my bedroom.
0:01:40 > 0:01:44West Yorkshire Police is the fourth largest force in the country,
0:01:44 > 0:01:48covering an area of around 780 square miles.
0:01:59 > 0:02:04It's 8pm and a break-in is being reported on the outskirts of Leeds.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17Myself and PC Rob Quinn are first on the scene.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23Wendy, just tell me what's happened from your side.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26We all left the house this morning at about half past eight
0:02:26 > 0:02:30and we haven't returned until probably 7 o'clock.
0:02:30 > 0:02:34I noticed there was a light on upstairs and said to one of my daughters,
0:02:34 > 0:02:37"Who's left the light on all day?!" Flipping electric bill and everything.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41Gone upstairs. "Somebody's been through your drawers, Alicia." So we blamed the other daughter.
0:02:41 > 0:02:46And then when I walked in my bedroom I could see all my drawers were open, the wardrobe, everything.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49So I just said, "How the heck have they got in?"
0:02:49 > 0:02:53So my husband came running downstairs and could see the back door.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56- Through there?- Yes.- Would you mind if I had a look?- No problem.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58- Can you just show me where they've got in?- Yeah.
0:02:58 > 0:03:02I just put this pole up against something and jam it in there.
0:03:02 > 0:03:07It's just a little bit more... security. It's nothing, you know.
0:03:07 > 0:03:08We need a little bit more than that, Wendy.
0:03:08 > 0:03:11We need a little bit more security around this house.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Anyway, so we've opened this door... to see.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16Oh, here we go. Yeah. Yeah.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19- It looks like they've gone straight upstairs.- OK.
0:03:19 > 0:03:24And they've emptied my jewellery box, everything is gone. Everything.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27My mum's jewellery. My mum died three years ago.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29- So, that's all gone.- Yeah.
0:03:29 > 0:03:34My husband's treasurer of a football team and they've taken that money.
0:03:34 > 0:03:37- Are you all right just to show me where they've been?- Yes.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39You just go and show me.
0:03:39 > 0:03:43- It wasn't until I looked... in my room.- Oh, wow!
0:03:43 > 0:03:47- They've obviously gone through all your personal items.- Yeah.
0:03:47 > 0:03:52These were full of earrings and necklaces and they've emptied that.
0:03:52 > 0:03:53One of my mum's rings.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56My husband's treasury money was in one of these drawers down here.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58- This is a local club that he runs. - Yes.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01- Can I ask who's in these pictures here?- That's my mum.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04- This is your mum. - She died three years ago.
0:04:04 > 0:04:08- And the worst part of all this, it was some of your mum's jewellery. - My mum's jewellery.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11- I've got her rings on, her main rings.- They're not going anywhere.
0:04:11 > 0:04:17But... you know, the dress ring and her earrings.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20I think we need to help you out somehow, don't we?
0:04:20 > 0:04:22- We don't want this happening again. - No.
0:04:22 > 0:04:24They've taken the pillowcase off that pillow.
0:04:24 > 0:04:26Do you know, they would have used that as a...
0:04:26 > 0:04:29- Uh-huh. A swag bag. - A little swag bag, yeah.
0:04:29 > 0:04:33Hmm. It's just the thought of 'em being... in your house.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36- Oh, Wendy.- And then you become a prisoner in your own home, don't you.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38- Well, we don't want that. - No.
0:04:38 > 0:04:40I'm not going to let that happen at all.
0:04:43 > 0:04:45Wendy is truly distraught
0:04:45 > 0:04:49and it's vital that we secure this family's home as soon as possible.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52So I've arranged for Mark the locksmith to come straight round
0:04:52 > 0:04:55to replace the lock on their broken back door.
0:04:57 > 0:05:02Meanwhile, PC Rob Quinn is cracking on with the investigation.
0:05:02 > 0:05:06I've got as many crime details as I can get to get the offence properly recorded,
0:05:06 > 0:05:09preserved the scene as much as we can for scenes of crime,
0:05:09 > 0:05:11see if we can get any fingerprints, that kind of thing.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14Hopefully, fingers crossed, get some property back,
0:05:14 > 0:05:16which is always the nice part of our job.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19We'll do further extensive house to house enquiries tomorrow
0:05:19 > 0:05:21and just see if we can identify any witnesses
0:05:21 > 0:05:23or any CCTV that might become apparent.
0:05:23 > 0:05:27While PC Quinn and his colleagues are at work on the case,
0:05:27 > 0:05:30my mission is to make this family home a safe haven again.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33I want to upgrade their security
0:05:33 > 0:05:36and put the heart back into their ransacked bedroom.
0:05:36 > 0:05:40I hate coming in and seeing you in tears, Wendy,
0:05:40 > 0:05:45with what's happened, obviously because of your mother's jewellery going.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47And it's heartbreaking, it's horrible.
0:05:47 > 0:05:49And it's affected the entire family here
0:05:49 > 0:05:52and that's what I don't want to see and don't want ever to happen again.
0:05:52 > 0:05:55I think there's things we can do to really up the security here
0:05:55 > 0:05:58and make a massive difference.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01Does that sound like something you'd like us to do?
0:06:01 > 0:06:05- Yeah.- Yeah, if you wouldn't mind. - HE LAUGHS - If I wouldn't mind!
0:06:05 > 0:06:07- Yeah. - Let's do it. Let's get it done.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10Let's make this place feel like home again.
0:06:15 > 0:06:19It's so heartbreaking to see what's happened to Wendy and the family there
0:06:19 > 0:06:22and the devastation this burglary has caused.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24I really want to help them, so I'm going to get on the phone,
0:06:24 > 0:06:28make some calls to some people I think might just be able to help.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Hi, is that Steve? Hi, Bess, it's Rav.
0:06:37 > 0:06:39Hi, is that Barry? Hi, Gary, it's Rav.
0:06:39 > 0:06:41Steve, I need a bit of a favour from you.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43'Yeah?'
0:06:43 > 0:06:46We really need to look at their security, I don't think it's good enough.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49I want to do something extra for them on the inside
0:06:49 > 0:06:52- and I'm really hoping you can help me out.- 'Yeah, no problem.'
0:06:52 > 0:06:55- 'I can give you a helping hand there, I'm sure.'- 'OK. OK.'
0:06:55 > 0:06:57OK. I'll send you the details, Bess.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01I'll see you up there and hopefully you can wave your magic wand.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04- 'Well, I hope so. All right.' - Thanks, Bess.
0:07:04 > 0:07:05- 'Bye.'- Bye-bye.
0:07:10 > 0:07:14It's early morning and my volunteers are primed and ready for action.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17The first of my troops to arrive is PC Paul Croft,
0:07:17 > 0:07:21a Crime Prevention Officer who is here to give me his expert opinion
0:07:21 > 0:07:24on how to secure this family home.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27OK, Paul. So, obviously this is the front of the property,
0:07:27 > 0:07:30and obviously one thing that's missing is an alarm box.
0:07:30 > 0:07:32A nice box on the front of the house,
0:07:32 > 0:07:36just to show the offender that there is one and that people actually care about this, yeah.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39And if a burglar was to walk along, you have a look at the two houses,
0:07:39 > 0:07:41see an alarm box on one and not on the other,
0:07:41 > 0:07:44it's pretty simple to see which one they're probably going to target.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47And this could be why this property has been targeted.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49OK, so it's easily fixed, we'll get onto that.
0:07:49 > 0:07:53They've got a light there. I don't know if it works, but it looks a bit old and tatty.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56A new light on there, just to freshen it up a bit.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58Yeah, it'd be of benefit to change that.
0:07:58 > 0:08:00So we just want to lighten up this area.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02Let's go and have a look round the back, see what's there.
0:08:02 > 0:08:06Now another area of concern that you've pointed out is the garage.
0:08:06 > 0:08:08If we actually give it a push, as you can see...
0:08:08 > 0:08:13You see there. That does not take a lot for me to prise that open,
0:08:13 > 0:08:15anyone could bend that up and crawl in.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17We need to secure it in a much better way,
0:08:17 > 0:08:21and I would suggest a garage door defender, which simply is a T-shaped bar
0:08:21 > 0:08:24which would sit down at the bottom of the door here
0:08:24 > 0:08:28and then it would prevent you from pushing it open.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30Paul, this is the door that they broke into.
0:08:30 > 0:08:35At the time of the burglary, we had a handle here that they actually snapped off.
0:08:35 > 0:08:40Now, the homeowners have changed this with this flat panel there,
0:08:40 > 0:08:43because they're actually happy not to have a handle on the outside.
0:08:43 > 0:08:47- Security wise, safe enough? - That's absolutely fine for me, yeah.
0:08:47 > 0:08:51They can't use it as an entry door in terms of unlocking it,
0:08:51 > 0:08:53a keyed entry, but blanking it off is fine.
0:08:53 > 0:08:58The homeowners have even taken the steps themselves,
0:08:58 > 0:09:01of putting in a couple of sash jammers there as well.
0:09:01 > 0:09:04They just act as basically bolts, but that's an excellent idea.
0:09:04 > 0:09:09And what these sash jammers prove is that although we're here to fix up their property
0:09:09 > 0:09:11and make it as safe and secure as we possibly can,
0:09:11 > 0:09:16if you're relatively good at DIY there's a lot you can do yourself.
0:09:16 > 0:09:20But there's loads more we can do with a little bit of specialist help.
0:09:20 > 0:09:24I want Wendy and Stuart to feel as safe as possible,
0:09:24 > 0:09:27so getting an alarm fitted is my top priority.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30And some of my willing volunteers are onto it straight away.
0:09:35 > 0:09:40But it isn't just the security around this house that needs attention,
0:09:40 > 0:09:42I want to make this place feel like their home again.
0:09:42 > 0:09:46And designer Bess Sturman is on hand to help.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50Bess, thanks for coming up. This is the bedroom that Stuart shares with Wendy
0:09:50 > 0:09:54and this is where all their personal belongings were rifled through
0:09:54 > 0:09:57and all her mother's jewellery was stolen.
0:09:57 > 0:09:59And they're really upset by what's happened.
0:09:59 > 0:10:02So I want to change that and I want to give them somewhere
0:10:02 > 0:10:05where they can relax and enjoy their home again. And that's where you come in.
0:10:05 > 0:10:10Absolutely. It's a really personal space, a master bedroom,
0:10:10 > 0:10:13and it's a really important space to make their own again.
0:10:13 > 0:10:18We're going to change the layout of the room a bit and make it feel like a completely different space.
0:10:18 > 0:10:23As night falls, the police are continuing to investigate the burglary at Wendy and Stuart's.
0:10:23 > 0:10:28And the results from West Yorkshire's forensic team have come back.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30Unfortunately, there was nothing solid forensically
0:10:30 > 0:10:32that came from the examination
0:10:32 > 0:10:34to connect us to any suspects at that time.
0:10:34 > 0:10:39So, as a result of that, we have to look at other means of identifying the suspects
0:10:39 > 0:10:44using intelligence sources and seeing what we got back from things such as Crimestoppers.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47We've got PCSOs out there on the streets talking to a lot of people.
0:10:47 > 0:10:52As a result of the intelligence being gathered, we identified three suspects.
0:10:55 > 0:11:00So, the next challenge for the police will be to try to track down the suspects.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02Meanwhile, back at Wendy and Stuart's,
0:11:02 > 0:11:07my mission is to banish the bad memories the burglary holds for the family
0:11:07 > 0:11:10as they're still really struggling to come to terms with it.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13It's been pretty devastating really, you know.
0:11:13 > 0:11:18It's affected Wendy more than what it has done me, because all of her mum's jewellery, that's gone.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21That can't be replaced at all. You know what I mean?
0:11:21 > 0:11:24It's left Wendy really, really upset about it.
0:11:24 > 0:11:28Money, I can get over that but jewellery we can't.
0:11:28 > 0:11:32It's just... horrendous. It's the worst thing that's happened to me probably,
0:11:32 > 0:11:34apart from losing my mum.
0:11:34 > 0:11:38The thought of someone being in your house, in your room,
0:11:38 > 0:11:42it's just horrendous. It's... it's horrible.
0:11:44 > 0:11:48It's time for them to head off, so we can get to work
0:11:48 > 0:11:50and hopefully restore their love for their home.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58Luckily for me, my earlier calls really paid off
0:11:58 > 0:12:02and a wave of helpers is descending on Wendy and Stuart's house.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09Ladies and gents, thank you for rushing down here so quickly.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13For those of you that don't know, this home belongs to Wendy and Stuart and their two girls.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16Now they've just been burgled and it's really hit them hard,
0:12:16 > 0:12:21because Wendy had so many sentimental things stolen that belonged to her late mother
0:12:21 > 0:12:24and Stuart had the money for his local football team stolen.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27So, I really want to help them out and that's where you come in.
0:12:27 > 0:12:30So let's get in there and let's get this place fixed up. Ready?
0:12:30 > 0:12:34- ALL: Yeah! Yo!- To achieve my goal, we need to finish the alarm,
0:12:34 > 0:12:38secure the garage, replace the exterior lights,
0:12:38 > 0:12:40change the weak front door lock
0:12:40 > 0:12:44and dramatically alter the look of Stuart and Wendy's bedroom
0:12:44 > 0:12:48to get rid of the horrible memories from the night of the burglary.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51Imagine someone going through your stuff,
0:12:51 > 0:12:53it's just... it's not a nice feeling.
0:12:53 > 0:12:56So yeah, all I can do to help them, definitely.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02Next, it's time to clear the bedroom.
0:13:10 > 0:13:14And the alarm guys are working flat out, too.
0:13:14 > 0:13:15We're fitting a wireless system.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18So we've got the main control panel in this unit here
0:13:18 > 0:13:20and then we've got wireless detectors,
0:13:20 > 0:13:23so there's no cables involved, all battery operated.
0:13:23 > 0:13:27If a person comes in through the doors or the windows that will set the system off.
0:13:27 > 0:13:32We've got pet immune detectors, so that they won't trigger the detectors.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35Ingenious. What a fantastic gadget.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Perfect if you're an animal lover.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40Upstairs the prep for the bedroom is almost finished,
0:13:40 > 0:13:47which means Bess, our designer, can start turning her wonderful vision into a beautiful reality.
0:13:47 > 0:13:51So I've found a fabric which is like a tree motif with flowers
0:13:51 > 0:13:56and we're going to use that as the curtains, which is the only real pattern in the room,
0:13:56 > 0:14:01and possibly a couple of cushions I might just sneak in there as well to liven it up a bit.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13This is for the curtain rail for the new curtains to go on.
0:14:13 > 0:14:15Just a better support.
0:14:17 > 0:14:21While my team of local heroes are cracking on in the bedroom,
0:14:21 > 0:14:27I'm keen to find out how we are going to solve the security risk posed by the garage door.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30- Steve, good to see you.- Hiya. - How are you doing?
0:14:30 > 0:14:33- All right.- So tell me what you're doing with the garage.
0:14:33 > 0:14:38What we're putting on here is we've drilled a plate to the floor, anchored it with two rawl shields.
0:14:38 > 0:14:41It has a lug on it that fits over the top
0:14:41 > 0:14:45and that sits in front of the garage door to stop it opening.
0:14:45 > 0:14:46That's what we were concerned about.
0:14:46 > 0:14:50- It wasn't that safe the security on this door.- No. No. No it was quite weak.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53That looks pretty safe to me.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56It looks quite awesome when it's, you know on the floor and you see it, you know.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59And this padlock goes behind it to lock it all together.
0:14:59 > 0:15:03- Excellent. That is a great deterrent. That says stay away. - Absolutely. Yeah.
0:15:03 > 0:15:08You're not going to get through. Brilliant, Steve. Thank you. I'll let you crack on with that.
0:15:08 > 0:15:12Well, we're doing everything we can to secure Wendy and Stuart's home
0:15:12 > 0:15:15and the police are continuing to track down their stolen items.
0:15:15 > 0:15:19Wendy and Stuart had a lot of jewellery taken.
0:15:19 > 0:15:22Jewellery's something which can hold a lot of sentimental value.
0:15:22 > 0:15:26And it's important for us as police officers to try and get that back for people.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29We do go round all the local jewellers in the city centre
0:15:29 > 0:15:33and broadcast what jewellery we're looking for.
0:15:33 > 0:15:35We might stop and check someone with that property,
0:15:35 > 0:15:39we might be searching a house for something unconnected and see it.
0:15:39 > 0:15:44So a link to the jewellery, could be the key that unlocks this case.
0:15:44 > 0:15:47Meanwhile, back at the house, work continues at a great pace.
0:15:52 > 0:15:53It's looking very good.
0:15:53 > 0:15:58Almost 90% of people who are burgled are emotionally affected
0:15:58 > 0:16:00and Wendy and Stuart are no exception.
0:16:01 > 0:16:07And no-one knows better than Wendy's dad just what this transformation will mean for all the family.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10- So Edward, obviously you're Wendy's dad.- Yes.
0:16:10 > 0:16:14- You came over at the time of the burglary.- Yeah. I came up. - Just as moral support.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17- Yeah. Yeah.- We're doing some work on Wendy's house now,
0:16:17 > 0:16:20- the trades are coming and going all day long as you can see behind you. - Oh, yeah.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22Do you think this is going to help just a little bit.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25Yes, it'll just perk her up a little.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27- She needs that, doesn't she? - Yeah. Yeah.
0:16:27 > 0:16:32With everything going it's... All the jewellery and the cash.
0:16:32 > 0:16:36- Because she was devastated. - Oh. yes. Yes. Oh, aye, well, it does.
0:16:36 > 0:16:38I mean, you've been violated. haven't you?
0:16:38 > 0:16:41- There's been somebody in your house that weren't invited.- It's awful.
0:16:41 > 0:16:45On a security point, making it that much safer on the outside,
0:16:45 > 0:16:47that's got to be a positive for her and the family.
0:16:47 > 0:16:51Definitely. Yeah. And the burglar alarm up. It's deterrents.
0:16:51 > 0:16:53- That's what we want. - That's what you've got to do.
0:16:53 > 0:17:00Oh, yes. Great deterrents are the answer, and one of the best is a brand new strong lock.
0:17:03 > 0:17:09I've been overwhelmed by the support our local trades people have shown for Wendy and Stuart.
0:17:09 > 0:17:12Andy, you obviously heard what happened to the couple here
0:17:12 > 0:17:16about the burglary and you didn't hesitate to come round and help out the pair of you.
0:17:16 > 0:17:19And this has actually struck a chord with you
0:17:19 > 0:17:22because you've previously had someone break in to your own home.
0:17:22 > 0:17:26I've been burgled as well, yeah. Yeah, I know exactly how they're feeling.
0:17:26 > 0:17:32It was actually my little girl that heard them and woke up and alerted me.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34Yeah. It's an awful thing to happen.
0:17:34 > 0:17:38But you just hope, if you were in the same position, somebody would help you out. So...
0:17:38 > 0:17:41- Yeah. Let's hope so.- You've just got to do your bit if you can.
0:17:56 > 0:17:58It's almost the end of the day,
0:17:58 > 0:18:02but my team of volunteers are using every ounce of their energy
0:18:02 > 0:18:05working well into the night to get the job done.
0:18:08 > 0:18:09During the break-in,
0:18:09 > 0:18:13the treasury money belonging to Stuart's football team was stolen.
0:18:15 > 0:18:20It keeps me active. I've played since I was back at junior school and now I'm 48.
0:18:22 > 0:18:26And his team-mates can't believe something so awful
0:18:26 > 0:18:28could happen to such a truly decent bloke.
0:18:28 > 0:18:30Stuart's a great guy.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32Really caring, a great footballer but a really caring guy,
0:18:32 > 0:18:35who looks out for the guys, not just while at training,
0:18:35 > 0:18:39but also outside if people have had problems like they have had in the past.
0:18:41 > 0:18:45It's just disappointing that something like this can happen to somebody like him.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48You don't know why he's been robbed or anything like that,
0:18:48 > 0:18:53but it's just a shame that it happens to somebody who just tries to do something good in the community.
0:18:58 > 0:19:02But Stuart and his team aren't the only ones who've been setting the pace.
0:19:02 > 0:19:07Back at Police HQ, they've made headway with the burglary.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09Following the intelligence received
0:19:09 > 0:19:11in relation to Wendy and Stuart's burglary,
0:19:11 > 0:19:13two persons have been arrested.
0:19:13 > 0:19:19No further action's been taken against them as we're unable to link them to the offence.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22There's one further suspect who we are actively looking for,
0:19:22 > 0:19:25and we will be getting them into custody.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28It's fantastic news that the police have a lead on a suspect
0:19:28 > 0:19:32and hopefully somebody will be brought to book for this horrible crime.
0:19:34 > 0:19:37It's early morning and already my gang of good Samaritans
0:19:37 > 0:19:42are at Wendy and Stuart's home eager to complete the transformation.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46There's a lot to do today. We've got the radiator cabinet to build,
0:19:46 > 0:19:49we've got the curtains to put up, the blind to put up,
0:19:49 > 0:19:53and then we've got to get all the furniture in and make it look really nice
0:19:53 > 0:19:55for Stuart and Wendy to come back to.
0:20:17 > 0:20:20The stolen football club money has not only affected Stuart,
0:20:20 > 0:20:26but also his football team. So team-mate Andy has come round to show his support.
0:20:26 > 0:20:29Well, the money goes towards paying for the pitches,
0:20:29 > 0:20:32it also goes towards insurance for the players,
0:20:32 > 0:20:35so if they get injured they're covered.
0:20:35 > 0:20:38So if they miss any work days then that's paid for.
0:20:39 > 0:20:43It also goes towards kit and football equipment as well.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46It was awful to hear that, you know such an awful thing happened,
0:20:46 > 0:20:48you know, being broken into.
0:20:49 > 0:20:54Burglary is a truly distressing crime which touches so many lives,
0:20:54 > 0:20:58but with the help of my volunteers I'm hoping that we can erase the nightmares
0:20:58 > 0:21:02for this hardworking and ever so deserving family.
0:21:08 > 0:21:09So you have to lift that side up.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12- Lift it on.- Just let you finish off there, Wayne.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15Bess, this looks like a completely different room.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18- Just finishing touches now, so tell me what's still to go on.- Yes.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21So we've got the photographs that I've put together over there.
0:21:21 > 0:21:26That will go on that wall here, but I'm wanting to get the mirror positioned first so that we can get
0:21:26 > 0:21:29a nice reflection of that and you get to see it in both aspects.
0:21:29 > 0:21:32So the mirror going up there. Very, very fancy looking mirror.
0:21:32 > 0:21:34I can't believe the change, actually,
0:21:34 > 0:21:39- it's just completely different and I think they're going to absolutely love it.- Oh, I hope so.
0:21:39 > 0:21:42I really wanted to make the room completely different for them,
0:21:42 > 0:21:45so that it has no remnant of the memories of Wendy coming in
0:21:45 > 0:21:48and finding all of the mess all over the bed. Hopefully,
0:21:48 > 0:21:51the only thing that will look familiar is the pictures of their daughters
0:21:51 > 0:21:53- that we've put together for them. - Very nice.
0:21:53 > 0:21:56And everything else will feel a bit like a hotel for them for a few days.
0:21:56 > 0:22:00- Well, I think you're really going to make a massive difference.- Good.
0:22:00 > 0:22:02So I think they're going to be very, very pleased.
0:22:02 > 0:22:05Thank you for all your hard work. It looks amazing.
0:22:11 > 0:22:15We're heading into the final hours before Wendy, Stuart and their daughters return home.
0:22:15 > 0:22:20And I have to say that the determination and kindness shown by my team of volunteers
0:22:20 > 0:22:23has been remarkable.
0:22:23 > 0:22:27We've updated the burglar alarm, put in new locks.
0:22:27 > 0:22:30Installed dusk-to-dawn lights,
0:22:30 > 0:22:33and secured their vulnerable garage door.
0:22:34 > 0:22:38But what will PC Paul Croft think of our new security measures?
0:22:38 > 0:22:42I think if I have to give a mark here,
0:22:42 > 0:22:47originally we'd have probably been looking at maybe three or four out of ten for the security on this home.
0:22:47 > 0:22:50And again with what's been done, the improvements that have been made,
0:22:50 > 0:22:56I think we'll be looking at perhaps an eight, maybe even pushing up towards a nine.
0:23:01 > 0:23:05Wendy and Stuart were left devastated when their home was attacked by thieves.
0:23:09 > 0:23:14But my army of helpers has turned this terrible situation around by revamping their security
0:23:14 > 0:23:19and restoring the tranquillity of their ransacked bedroom.
0:23:23 > 0:23:25But what will they make of our changes?
0:23:28 > 0:23:31- Hi, Wendy.- Hi. Are you OK? - Yeah, I'm very well thank you.
0:23:31 > 0:23:34- How are you?- Good. Yes, fine thank you.- It's good to see you.
0:23:34 > 0:23:38- And you, too.- Good to see you. - And what have you been doing?
0:23:38 > 0:23:41- How are you doing? Good to see you. All right?- Yes.
0:23:41 > 0:23:47- Do you want to have a look at what we've done?- Certainly, if you don't mind.- Follow me.
0:23:47 > 0:23:50OK. Obviously the front of your house has changed a little bit.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53As you can see, we've put a new light in there by the front door.
0:23:53 > 0:23:57When it gets dark it will automatically go on, when it gets light it will go off.
0:23:57 > 0:23:59It will give gentle lighting around here
0:23:59 > 0:24:03just to make sure no-one's sneaking around up to no good.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06Also, you can see on the front door we've actually changed the lock.
0:24:06 > 0:24:09That's much safer than what was there before.
0:24:09 > 0:24:13- And also if you look up. - Oh, wow!
0:24:13 > 0:24:16Yeah, you can see your new burglar alarm box flashing away doing its business.
0:24:16 > 0:24:19I think that's such a good visible deterrent.
0:24:19 > 0:24:22- It says your house is that much safer and more secure.- Thank you.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24So that's this side. Come round with me to the back
0:24:24 > 0:24:27- and I'll show you a couple more changes we've got there.- Right. Thank you. Yeah.
0:24:31 > 0:24:35- If you just look here, we've got another one of those lights on the back there.- Yeah.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38Because this was the area that was attacked by the intruders.
0:24:38 > 0:24:42So, if you brighten up that area it's going to put them off even thinking about having a go there.
0:24:42 > 0:24:47And something else you can see on the bottom of your garage is that big red,
0:24:47 > 0:24:48what we call a door defender.
0:24:48 > 0:24:54Now, what we found when we did an assessment with a police officer here was that that garage door,
0:24:54 > 0:24:58- you could actually bend it right up, and someone could have crawled in. - Really?
0:24:58 > 0:25:02So, it comes off. It's just one key and the whole thing lifts off and it takes five seconds.
0:25:02 > 0:25:06- Fantastic. Thank you. - OK. So that's what we've done on the outside.- Yep.
0:25:06 > 0:25:11- You probably want to know what's gone on on the inside.- Just a little.- Yes? Getting nervous.
0:25:17 > 0:25:22As you know, we wanted to do something a little extra for you.
0:25:22 > 0:25:26- Oh, my word!- So if you both come in. - Oh, my word!- I can't believe it!
0:25:26 > 0:25:29- Can't believe this is our bedroom. - Unbelievable!- Looks different, eh?
0:25:29 > 0:25:34It's fantastic! It really is. It really is nice.
0:25:34 > 0:25:38- I can't believe it.- Yes, Wendy, I'll just go out and come back in
0:25:38 > 0:25:42- Oh, our pleasure. - Thank you.
0:25:42 > 0:25:45- Thank you.- Cheers, Rav. - My pleasure. My pleasure.
0:25:45 > 0:25:51- I can't believe it. - And do you think this is going to go some way into helping you try
0:25:51 > 0:25:55and forget what happened when you walked in and found what the intruders had done to your bedroom.
0:25:55 > 0:26:00- Just some way towards helping. - Certainly. It's going to go a long way.- Definitely. A long way.
0:26:00 > 0:26:02- That's the main thing. - Thanks very much.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05- Two other people live here, obviously.- Yes.- The girls.
0:26:05 > 0:26:08- So, do you think they'll give the thumbs up?- Oh, definitely.
0:26:08 > 0:26:13- Shall we have a word.- Yes. - And get them in. Right, girls. Gabby and Alicia, do you want to come in?
0:26:13 > 0:26:16- Come on in. - HE LAUGHS
0:26:16 > 0:26:18- It's all beautiful!- Come on in.
0:26:18 > 0:26:22What do you think of your parents' bedroom?
0:26:22 > 0:26:27- Wow!- I'm not even... I just... No, I just can't speak.
0:26:27 > 0:26:30- Just wow!- How? Just how? - Well, I'll tell you how.
0:26:30 > 0:26:32There's a lot of people that made this possible.
0:26:32 > 0:26:34And they've all pulled together,
0:26:34 > 0:26:39they've all worked really, really hard and they would like to say hello to you,
0:26:39 > 0:26:41I'm sure you'd probably like to say hello to them.
0:26:41 > 0:26:43Yeah, we would do, we'd like to say thank you as well.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46- They're out in your front garden right now.- Oh, wow!
0:26:46 > 0:26:49Let's go and see them and say thank you as well.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58So come on out, and meet the team.
0:26:58 > 0:27:00- There's a few faces you recognise there.- Yes.
0:27:00 > 0:27:02That have come to lend their support.
0:27:02 > 0:27:05These are all local tradesmen and women. All heard what happened to you
0:27:05 > 0:27:07and all said that they really wanted to help you out.
0:27:07 > 0:27:11- Thank you.- Hello, everybody. Thank you very much.- Thank you.
0:27:11 > 0:27:18Well, what an amazing transformation, not just with the house but with their emotions.
0:27:18 > 0:27:21Just days ago there was tears of sadness,
0:27:21 > 0:27:24and now there's one or two tears of joy.
0:27:24 > 0:27:29It's great that we've been able to help this family after the trauma of the burglary.
0:27:29 > 0:27:34The police investigation continues, but they're here with some clear advice for us all.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37It's great that the whole community's come out to help Wendy and Stuart
0:27:37 > 0:27:40particularly to get over the burglary that they've suffered.
0:27:40 > 0:27:44The biggest thing for me around the communities and neighbourhoods
0:27:44 > 0:27:46is looking after each other and keeping an eye out
0:27:46 > 0:27:51and if something look suspicious it probably is suspicious. Go with your gut feeling.
0:27:58 > 0:28:02I want that room. I want that room.
0:28:08 > 0:28:10This bedroom is just amazing.
0:28:10 > 0:28:13It just makes you realise that there's a lot of nice people out there.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16There's a few bad ones, but there's a lot of nice people.
0:28:16 > 0:28:20And I'm just overwhelmed. I really am.
