0:00:03 > 0:00:07There are 700,000 burglaries in the UK every year.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25But right across the country, dedicated police teams

0:00:25 > 0:00:28are on the offensive, waging war against the criminals

0:00:28 > 0:00:31who steal from local homeowners.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Police! Open the door otherwise entry's going to have to be forced.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40For the victims of these crimes, it can take months, even years

0:00:40 > 0:00:43to come to terms with what's happened.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45And the fact that they've so brazenly done it as well.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Very angry.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50But in this series we're about to show them and you,

0:00:50 > 0:00:52how we can all beat the burglars.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56This is Crime Scene Rescue.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00On today's show we meet Amrit and Wendy,

0:01:00 > 0:01:03a couple fighting to overcome the trauma of being burgled.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07- Right.- Yeah.- Give us a kiss. I love you.- Love you, too.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09Since they moved in a year ago,

0:01:09 > 0:01:13they've worked hard to create a comfortable home for themselves.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16But now their safe haven has been destroyed

0:01:16 > 0:01:19after their home was ransacked.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24I feel absolutely sick that they think they've got the right

0:01:24 > 0:01:27to be able to do what they've done, I really do.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31And as the police attempt to track down the criminals,

0:01:31 > 0:01:35we try and put the heart back into their home.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Oh, thank you very much.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40That's really touched my heart. Oh, God! It's lovely.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Like many places in the UK,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46West Yorkshire faces the ever present threat of burglary,

0:01:46 > 0:01:51and last year the police here dealt with over 14,000 break-ins.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53I'm going to join them on the front line

0:01:53 > 0:01:56to see how they go about tackling the problem.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59But while I'm here, I also want to do everything I can

0:01:59 > 0:02:02to help the victims of this terrible crime

0:02:02 > 0:02:03Police, emergency.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12It's just after nine in the evening and another burglary has come in.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14When did you go out to work, sir?

0:02:28 > 0:02:32PC Graham Lawton is attending the scene at Amrit and Wendy's house.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35The distraught couple recently returned home from work

0:02:35 > 0:02:38to find their home had been ransacked.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44This is the internal patio door, which has been forced.

0:02:44 > 0:02:49There's a blunt mark there, which looks like a screwdriver.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53It appears the burglars broke the lock on the exterior door

0:02:53 > 0:02:56to gain entry via the conservatory.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04Somebody had broken into our house and taken some very precious things

0:03:04 > 0:03:06that are precious to us.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10We've worked hard all our lives, OK, to get ourselves things and,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13somebody thinks they've got the right to walk into my house

0:03:13 > 0:03:15and take my stuff.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19A heartbroken Amrit and Wendy head upstairs with PC Lawton

0:03:19 > 0:03:21to see what's been taken.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Even though they've left his bank cards,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26the burglars have rifled through Amrit's wallet

0:03:26 > 0:03:29and taken all his money. But that's not all that's gone.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Our daughter's coming up for the weekend, it's her birthday

0:03:32 > 0:03:36we've bought her stuff for her birthday, they've taken that also.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39The offenders have been in this room and as you can see

0:03:39 > 0:03:44they've made quite an untidy search, pulling out drawers...

0:03:46 > 0:03:51PC Lawton continues to check what other items have been taken.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55In here, there's been quite a lot of jewellery.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58They've been selective about what they've taken

0:03:58 > 0:04:02but they've taken some expensive items of Asian gold and...

0:04:02 > 0:04:05They've taken... I've noticed they've taken my earrings,

0:04:05 > 0:04:09I had a bag of earrings there. My gold watch there.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12The burglars have stolen a large quantity of gold

0:04:12 > 0:04:14from this dejected couple.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18Amrit had purchased much of the gold as an investment,

0:04:18 > 0:04:21but some of it also had great sentimental value

0:04:21 > 0:04:25as his parents had given it to Wendy as a wedding gift.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29It's like hurt deep inside somewhere, you know what I mean?

0:04:29 > 0:04:30It can't be replaced, can it?

0:04:30 > 0:04:35Yeah. You can't replace it, not with money, not with anything else,

0:04:35 > 0:04:37you know, because, it's something...

0:04:37 > 0:04:40you know, my parents are not anymore here.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43- All this make me upset a little bit. - Mmm. It's OK.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48And it's like, you know, it's not money. Not like some memories.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51It's very important for you, you know what I mean.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53I've heard about Amrit and Wendy's plight

0:04:53 > 0:04:57and I desperately want them to feel safe in their home tonight.

0:04:57 > 0:05:02So as a priority, I've arranged for a locksmith to come round

0:05:02 > 0:05:05and fit a new top of the range lock to the back door.

0:05:05 > 0:05:11Meanwhile, PC Lawton lists everything that's been stolen.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15As well as the gold and a birthday present for Wendy's daughter,

0:05:15 > 0:05:19the burglars have taken two laptops and two digital cameras,

0:05:19 > 0:05:24one of which had irreplaceable photos of Amrit's late mother on it.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28It's been a really traumatic evening,

0:05:28 > 0:05:30but I hope that the new lock on their door

0:05:30 > 0:05:34will at least allow them to get a little bit of sleep tonight.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40It's the next morning and the police have arrived

0:05:40 > 0:05:44at Amrit and Wendy's, and Sergeant Pamela Wright

0:05:44 > 0:05:47is heading up a team of officers, who are about to go door to door,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50to check if any of the neighbours saw or heard anything

0:05:50 > 0:05:53- relating to the burglary.- OK? So you've all got your addresses.

0:05:53 > 0:05:58- So, off we go and let's get on and get it done.- Right, Sarg.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Scenes of Crime Officer Chris Barley has also turned up,

0:06:01 > 0:06:06and he gets straight to work searching for forensic evidence.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Sometimes mornings are a bit difficult because of the dew,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12but in this case we've been fine.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18We have received information from the members of the public that live here,

0:06:18 > 0:06:21one that there is CCTV that may have caught somebody -

0:06:21 > 0:06:24we've got to check that out - and that there was a suspicious character

0:06:24 > 0:06:28seen in the area. We've got a brief description of that person,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31so we'll be passing that forward to our Intelligence Department

0:06:31 > 0:06:34and hopefully it will lead us to an arrest.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Unfortunately, we've not found anything identifiable

0:06:42 > 0:06:44like fingerprints or footwear.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48I can say that the offender's probably been wearing gloves

0:06:48 > 0:06:50probably woollen gloves, because they've come through

0:06:50 > 0:06:53we've seen several glove marks on various items

0:06:53 > 0:06:55as I've gone through the house.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00While the police are intent on catching the criminals,

0:07:00 > 0:07:05I'm determined to help Amrit and Wendy in any way I can

0:07:05 > 0:07:07And Wendy you've had a chance to look through now

0:07:07 > 0:07:09and find out all the items that are missing,

0:07:09 > 0:07:12- and there's a lot that's gone, isn't there?- A lot.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15I had a very old, very old jewellery box

0:07:15 > 0:07:17that even the lid was slightly broken on it

0:07:17 > 0:07:20but I kept things in there from when I was a kid.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22And in there my dad had made me,

0:07:22 > 0:07:25which my dad's been gone now about 20 years,

0:07:25 > 0:07:28- and he made me a ring out of an old shilling.- Oh!

0:07:28 > 0:07:32And they've taken that. It's not important to them,

0:07:32 > 0:07:35but it meant the world to me. It's of no value,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38but why did they want THAT?

0:07:38 > 0:07:41So, Amrit, those photographs obviously had a massive meaning

0:07:41 > 0:07:45to you, because, they were your last memories of you and your mother.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Of course, yeah. This is the last moment

0:07:47 > 0:07:49what I spend with my mother, you know.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52All these photographs, all these memories,

0:07:52 > 0:07:56they're all kept in my laptop, and all these memories are gone.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59You know, these are things that are not important to them.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01They've taken everything, haven't they, baby?

0:08:01 > 0:08:04- So...- They mean so much to you, clearly. Clearly.

0:08:04 > 0:08:10- It's upset me.- Don't be.- I'm not surprised it upsets you, Wendy,

0:08:10 > 0:08:13it's an awful thing to happen. No one has the right

0:08:13 > 0:08:15to make you feel like that in your own house,

0:08:15 > 0:08:18and I'm determined to sort this out.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21And let's get you fixed up, let's make you feel nice and safe

0:08:21 > 0:08:24and secure, and try and give you your home back.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26I've been really touched by this couple

0:08:26 > 0:08:28who've really been through the mill.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30I'm making it my personal mission

0:08:30 > 0:08:33to overhaul the security of their home,

0:08:33 > 0:08:35as I can't bear the thought of them

0:08:35 > 0:08:37ever having to go through another burglary.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Time to get on the phone and assemble a crack team

0:08:40 > 0:08:43of local trades people, to help me fix up their house.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50Hi, Gary, it's Rav. Mark, it's Rav. How are you?

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Hi, is that Barry?

0:08:52 > 0:08:55I'm well thank you, Faye, I'm after a bit of a favour, though.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Do you reckon you can help me out with something? I'm trying to fix up

0:08:58 > 0:09:00their property and make it as safe as possible.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03I want to do something nice for them on the inside and in the bedroom

0:09:03 > 0:09:07particularly that was completely rifled through by the offenders.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11We're looking at sort of changing the colours and just making it feel

0:09:11 > 0:09:14like a different room for them, and make it feel nice for the couple

0:09:14 > 0:09:16and sort of give them their home back.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Do you think you can help me with that? Lovely.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31While my team of local trades people are preparing to do battle

0:09:31 > 0:09:32with the security at the house,

0:09:32 > 0:09:36the police are continuing to track down their stolen items.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40They've sent a description of Wendy and Amrit's gold

0:09:40 > 0:09:42round to local shops.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45This is a tactic West Yorkshire Police regularly use

0:09:45 > 0:09:48as it cuts the chain of stolen goods

0:09:48 > 0:09:50and can lead to the recovery of items.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56Back at the house, it's time to crack on with the security upgrade.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58First person on the scene

0:09:58 > 0:10:01is the Crime Prevention Specialist, Dave Harrison.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04He's here to give me some expert advice.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08- So, Dave, you've had a quick scout around the property...- Yeah.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11just to see what improvements we'll be able to make.

0:10:11 > 0:10:12Let's start with the front.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Is there anything there we can do to strengthen that,

0:10:15 > 0:10:17or just improve the security as a whole?

0:10:17 > 0:10:20Yeah, I think to improve the door...

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Looking at the locking system, it looks quite worn

0:10:23 > 0:10:27so the handle itself needs to be replaced as well.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29Also a very quick point, I see they've got a light

0:10:29 > 0:10:32just on the top of the porch area there almost.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35If they've got a light it's got to work really, doesn't it?

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Absolutely. I mean it's there for decoration.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Obviously it does help them, because you can actually see.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43It's plate glass through the door,

0:10:43 > 0:10:46so you can actually see anybody who's outside, so that will help.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48And then of course if they have some additional lighting

0:10:48 > 0:10:51- for the vehicles when they get parked down here.- OK.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54So, if we put some lighting on the side,

0:10:54 > 0:10:56- you'd like to see it really nice and high?- Yeah.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59- Well, it stops the offender from actually getting to it.- OK.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01That's the front and the side. Let's go round the back

0:11:01 > 0:11:03and there's a few changes we can do there. Right

0:11:03 > 0:11:07In the war against burglars, it's important to make your home look safe.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09Criminals will always go for the easiest target.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12OK, Dave, obviously the rear of the property now and one thing

0:11:12 > 0:11:17that strikes me straight way is that really old crusty alarm box.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19To me, it gives the impression it is not working

0:11:19 > 0:11:22- and that's got to go, hasn't it? - Yes, it has.

0:11:22 > 0:11:27And both boxes look as if there's no maintenance going on,

0:11:27 > 0:11:30- they possibly don't work.- We can see here on the patio door there

0:11:30 > 0:11:34the lock... obviously this was initially where the intruder got in.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37- We've changed that.- Yes.- And is that to the standard you want to see?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40- That's to the standard, we're happy with that.- Good.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Through the conservatory there's the internal patio door.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45Again, the intruders forced their way through that.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48- Is there anything we can do to strengthen that?- Yeah.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51I think we can put some interior locking locks on there,

0:11:51 > 0:11:55and also it's going to form part of the alarm system.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57There's no time to waste,

0:11:57 > 0:12:00we need to get straight on with the security overhaul

0:12:00 > 0:12:02at Wendy and Amrit's, and the first members

0:12:02 > 0:12:05of my eager team of helpers has arrived.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08Chris is fitting a new top of the range alarm system,

0:12:08 > 0:12:11and Ian is installing exterior motion sensor lights.

0:12:11 > 0:12:16A good visible alarm is a great deterrent to scare off the thieves.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21So really you put this system in to make it as hard as possible...

0:12:21 > 0:12:23- Yeah.- for any intruder to come in. - That's correct.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- So you put contacts on the front door.- Correct.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29Now a contact, for those that don't know, is two points that meet

0:12:29 > 0:12:31and when you open the door if the alarm is set,

0:12:31 > 0:12:35- when that contact is broken the alarm's going to sound. - That is correct, yes.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37And you've done the same on the back door

0:12:37 > 0:12:39- because you know that's where the intruder did get in.- Yes.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42So once this is locked, if someone was somehow to get in

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- and to force that open, the alarm's going to sound.- Yeah.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48And if they do manage to get through that, which is highly unlikely...

0:12:48 > 0:12:50- Yeah.- we've got a second defence, which is a P-I-R.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53So, that's sending invisible beams through, so if anyone was to walk in

0:12:53 > 0:12:57and break that beam, the alarm would sound, and it does sound great.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01The problem we have with the couple here is there was an old system installed already.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03- It was too complex for them. You've thought about that.- Yeah.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- You've got something very simple haven't you?- Very simple.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10Now, what we can do is use just a standard key fob,

0:13:10 > 0:13:12- it's like what you'd use for your car.- Mmm-hmm.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14And you press a button and it's so simple.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17- You've got unlock and lock. - So, nice and easy.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20And what I love is your little touch that I've noticed.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23I love that. You've actually put Wendy's name on it

0:13:23 > 0:13:25- so they know who's is who. - They know who's is who.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28This is fantastic. I'm sure the couple are going to be pleased

0:13:28 > 0:13:31- with what you've done.- So do we.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35Outside Ian is finishing off by fitting the exterior lights

0:13:35 > 0:13:38high up, so they can't be easily smashed.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43But I also want to do something extra for this lovely couple

0:13:43 > 0:13:45who've had such a terrible time.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48It's just disgusting and it's wrong, very wrong.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51And I hope they can live with themselves.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53But at the end of the day I don't expect they care anyway.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Their bedroom was targeted by the burglars

0:13:56 > 0:13:59and it now holds upsetting memories for Amrit and Wendy.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03I want to transform it and create a new fresh space for them.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Designer Faye Butterworth is here to help.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08What I want to do, as a little extra

0:14:08 > 0:14:11as well as taking care of the security on the outside,

0:14:11 > 0:14:15is give them a place where they can almost forget about the burglary,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18- give them a fresh start and a place to relax.- Yeah.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20And I think we can do that in this bedroom.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24You've got a few examples here of different schemes that you could do.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26So which one, after speaking to Amrit and Wendy,

0:14:26 > 0:14:30- are you going to go for?- Well, I think after speaking to the couple

0:14:30 > 0:14:32that I think the best option for them

0:14:32 > 0:14:35would look at something along the lines of the chic boutique.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38So, I want to give them a nice monochromatic feel to the room

0:14:38 > 0:14:41- so it's nice and neutral.- Mmm-hmm. - With an accent colour brought in.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44That way in future if they do sort of get bored with their colour,

0:14:44 > 0:14:47- they can actually very easily change it.- OK.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49So that's the colour scheme. Anything else you're going to do?

0:14:49 > 0:14:52Yeah. We're going to really change the furniture.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54The storage is obviously somewhat of an issue in this room.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Quite minimal, isn't it? It is and we don't have matching bedside units

0:14:58 > 0:15:01- Mmm-hmm.- And we've got a bit of an issue with the TV over here.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04So furniture is key in here and storage is key,

0:15:04 > 0:15:07so we need to address all of those issues for Wendy and Amrit.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Yeah, it sounds fantastic.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11I'm sure they're going to be really, really happy with that.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14'Hopefully Faye's ideas for their bedroom will raise

0:15:14 > 0:15:16'the couple's spirits.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19'It's no wonder they're shaken - around 87%

0:15:19 > 0:15:23'of people who've been burgled report being emotionally affected.'

0:15:26 > 0:15:28It's 6.30 in the morning and Amrit and Wendy

0:15:28 > 0:15:31are preparing to leave their home, so we can move in

0:15:31 > 0:15:36to get cracking on the bedroom and continue overhauling their security.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39- Right.- Yeah. - Give us a kiss. I love you.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Love you too.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Since the burglary, this dedicated couple have been through

0:15:44 > 0:15:47a huge range of emotions, but now they are looking ahead.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51I'm not going to let what's happened to us spoil our future,

0:15:51 > 0:15:55and we're going to try and put it behind us and move on.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58'I desperately want to make Amrit and Wendy's future a bright one,

0:15:58 > 0:16:00'and I'm not alone.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03'It's the next part of my transformation and my band

0:16:03 > 0:16:06'of community-minded tradespeople are arriving,

0:16:06 > 0:16:08'keen and eager to help.'

0:16:08 > 0:16:11OK, ladies and gents, thanks for rushing over here so quickly.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15This is Amrit and Wendy's house and recently they were burgled.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19And not only was an amount of gold and computer equipment stolen,

0:16:19 > 0:16:22but also the last pictures

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Amrit had of himself and his late mother.

0:16:25 > 0:16:26They've gone.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28As you can imagine, the couple

0:16:28 > 0:16:30are completely devastated by what happened,

0:16:30 > 0:16:33and I need your help to change that.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37What we do have is a very deserving couple that really needs your help.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39What we don't have is an awful lot of time.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42So let's get in there and get this place fixed up.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44THEY CHEER

0:16:46 > 0:16:48I think that might be glued that side.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53179.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57What might be worth doing, Steve,

0:16:57 > 0:17:00if we can get just a coat of white round that, so then the electricians

0:17:00 > 0:17:05can fit that light, cos it's a circular one but it's flush.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16We haven't got any room for error, so I don't want anything cut.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19The overhaul of the bedroom is taking shape.

0:17:19 > 0:17:25Meanwhile, downstairs, the security upgrade is also picking up the pace.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28It's an anti-snap lock that I'm putting in.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30Basically it's got a break off point,

0:17:30 > 0:17:33so if a burglar does attack the door, it'll just break off,

0:17:33 > 0:17:37it's weakened, and then it'll basically shut your door down.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46Faye, it looks like a different room already. You've obviously done loads of work.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Tell me what's happened so far and what's still to go.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50Right. The guys have gone great guns today.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53The wallpaper's all been stripped and all the paper,

0:17:53 > 0:17:55the original paper that was on, was all lifted back.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57- All the painting's finished now.- Right.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Michelle at the moment is doing the soft furnishings,

0:18:00 > 0:18:02she's getting on with the voile.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04Michelle, what are you doing over there?

0:18:04 > 0:18:06- It looks like you're hemming something.- I am, yes.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09- Yeah, what is it?- I'm getting the length of the voile. We're trying to

0:18:09 > 0:18:12get the voile, obviously, to sit on the windowsill here.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14So I'm just hanging it up and pinning it

0:18:14 > 0:18:16so that I can then seam it.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19It's not just cos you think it looks really nice that you've put this on,

0:18:19 > 0:18:22there's another reason why you've done that, isn't there?

0:18:22 > 0:18:24That's right. Originally the couple had a wooden blind up,

0:18:24 > 0:18:26but we obviously take that down

0:18:26 > 0:18:28and we're having lovely full-length curtains on there.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30But, for a security point of view,

0:18:30 > 0:18:32we want some opaqueness to the window,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35so this was just to avoid anybody looking in. So that's why we're going to add it.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37- A bit more privacy in here. - Absolutely, yes.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40- All right, girls, I'll let you get back to it.- Fantastic.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Loads of work to do and I'll bring you a strong coffee.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45- Yes. That'd be lovely.- Keep this one.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49'While my team of local heroes are beavering away at the house,

0:18:49 > 0:18:53'back at police HQ the investigation into the burglary continues.'

0:18:55 > 0:18:58The property which was stolen in the burglary,

0:18:58 > 0:19:00which was obviously electrical items like the laptops,

0:19:00 > 0:19:04certain programmes can be installed on them - tracking software.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07That's something which obviously we advise everyone who has property

0:19:07 > 0:19:11of that kind of nature, to get, whether it be your iPhone or the laptops.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14And then obviously it gives us a better opportunity of recovering that property.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17The main focus on this is the jewellery for us.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20That is something we would like to get back for Amrit and Wendy.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23We appreciate it holds dear sentimental value to them.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26We're hoping that as a result of the inquiries we're conducting

0:19:26 > 0:19:28with the jewellery shops in and around Leeds,

0:19:28 > 0:19:34that we will generate some inquiries back which may lead to some suspects.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36Well, that's good to hear.

0:19:36 > 0:19:41And as night falls, my troops are still hard at work.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48It's quite late in the day, so we're just getting the carpet finished.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51It's being laid now by Gary down there.

0:19:51 > 0:19:56The next thing on the agenda is Michelle and I are going to get the bed upstairs, get that put together,

0:19:56 > 0:20:00constructed and ready for the wardrobe guys in the morning,

0:20:00 > 0:20:03just to pull some time back this evening to make sure that by tomorrow

0:20:03 > 0:20:08we're going to be on schedule and have all the reveal done.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20It's early morning and there's still lots of work to do

0:20:20 > 0:20:23before Amrit and Wendy return home.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37Hi, Lee. I'm just going to interrupt you. Tell me what you're doing at the moment.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39A fitted wardrobe, just putting a shelf in.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43The point of having a fitted wardrobe is you're going to make the most of the space,

0:20:43 > 0:20:46cos obviously you haven't got a lot to work with, have you?

0:20:46 > 0:20:50Yeah, this minimises the space. by the time we've got the doors in and got the mirrors on,

0:20:50 > 0:20:52it'll feel like a different room altogether.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05And it's not just the bedroom that's getting attention.

0:21:05 > 0:21:10Perfectionist Faye has nipped downstairs to paint around where the alarm was fitted.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13It's nice to be able to give back and help people out.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17You know, give them something really nice

0:21:17 > 0:21:20after the experience they've been through.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22You know, it's just... it's good for the soul.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28Upstairs the team are on the home straight

0:21:28 > 0:21:31and they're just completing the finishing touches to the bedroom.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37Before Amrit and Wendy return home,

0:21:37 > 0:21:40Crime Prevention Officer Dave Harrison has come round

0:21:40 > 0:21:45to review all of the new security measures we've put in place.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48We've added a new lock to the back door, front door,

0:21:48 > 0:21:52and a sensor to the sliding patio door.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54A new top of the range alarm has also been fitted,

0:21:54 > 0:21:58and we've added two exterior lights to discourage any would-be burglars

0:21:58 > 0:22:02from sneaking around in the dark. So what's Dave's verdict?

0:22:04 > 0:22:07So in conclusion, when you look at the security of the house,

0:22:07 > 0:22:12before all this work was done it was really poor.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16But now, it really is exceptional. Eight out of ten.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19I'm delighted that Dave is happy with all that we've done

0:22:19 > 0:22:22to upgrade the security at Amrit and Wendy's home.

0:22:22 > 0:22:27I've got my fingers crossed they'll feel the same way too.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31I'm just waiting for Amrit and Wendy to turn up and see what we've done to their house.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33I'm a bit nervous, but I hope they like it.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36And here they are.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44- Hey, Amrit. How are you doing? - Not bad. How are you?

0:22:44 > 0:22:47Oh, I'm good, I'm good. Good to see you both.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50- How are you doing? Are you all right?- Oh, yeah, yeah.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53- Hi Wendy. How are you? - I'm good, thank you.

0:22:53 > 0:22:58- Are you nervous?- A little bit, yeah! - Oh! Come here. Good to see you. - And you too darling.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02Wah! Right. What we've done to your house

0:23:02 > 0:23:08is make it as secure as we possibly can, because we do not want any hint of a second offence to come back.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12We just don't want any offenders to try and get into your home, so it's nice and safe now.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15We've got on the front door there a brand-new lock, that is

0:23:15 > 0:23:17- the strongest we can possibly get. - Yeah.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20There is absolutely no way anyone will be able to snap it out

0:23:20 > 0:23:21like they did before, and get in.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24- Now, in addition to that really strong door lock...- Yeah.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26- ..we've gone one step further than that.- OK.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30So if you just let me whiz in front of you. Come with me.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34- Just look up.- Wow!- See there? - Oh, wow! Yeah. My goodness.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38- A brand-new burglar alarm system we've put in.- Fantastic.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41So you're... And yeah, you've seen it,

0:23:41 > 0:23:42- we've got a light as well. - Brilliant.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44That's got a little sensor on the light,

0:23:44 > 0:23:47- so if anyone was to walk through, in darkness...- Yeah.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49- ..it would illuminate.- Fantastic.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53And it just gives that impression that this place is protected.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56- Absolutely.- If anyone was to walk past and see that,

0:23:56 > 0:23:57they'll think, hey, hands off.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01Absolutely fantastic. That is absolutely fantastic, it's brilliant.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04OK, obviously the rear of your house now,

0:24:04 > 0:24:07- and if you just look up for me, right at the top.- Oh, look.

0:24:07 > 0:24:08Oh, yeah, fantastic. Brilliant.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10Another light. On the night of the offence,

0:24:10 > 0:24:12- this is how they got in, wasn't it?- Yes.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14Through your back conservatory door

0:24:14 > 0:24:16- and then via your patio door on the inside.- Yes.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18So that lock has been changed for the super strong one

0:24:18 > 0:24:20- that you've now got at the front as well.- Yes.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24Also, on the doors, we've put what they call contacts.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26We've also got the sensors on the inside -

0:24:26 > 0:24:28should anyone go in through a window,

0:24:28 > 0:24:30- it will set the alarm off as well.- Brilliant.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33- You've got all-round security. - Absolutely brilliant. Fantastic.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36- It's great.- These are all the security items that we've fitted

0:24:36 > 0:24:38to your property, so it is much, much safer now.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41But we wanted to do a little extra for you.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44So on the inside, there's something that we've done

0:24:44 > 0:24:47- upstairs in your bedroom. - Oh!- Oh, really? OK.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51- Would you like to have a look? - Yes. Absolutely.- Of course, yes.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55'I'm hoping they'll be as delighted with what we've done upstairs

0:24:55 > 0:24:57'as they are with the new security measures.

0:25:00 > 0:25:04'This devoted couple's bedroom has become the room they now associate

0:25:04 > 0:25:07'with uninvited burglars rifling through their belongings.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12'But we wanted to give them a new start.

0:25:12 > 0:25:16'We've updated their bedroom with a fresh contemporary theme

0:25:16 > 0:25:19'that will hopefully remove the bad memories.'

0:25:22 > 0:25:25- You might notice a few changes. - Oh, my God!

0:25:25 > 0:25:29- You may notice a few changes in your bedroom.- Oh, my... Oh, my God.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34- That's amazing.- It's so beautiful, it's so beautiful.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36- That is amazing. - Oh, my God.

0:25:36 > 0:25:41Oh, my God, that's... Look at that. That is stunning.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43- Look at that.- Oh, God. - Oh, my God, it's so nice.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Do you like the pictures?

0:25:45 > 0:25:47- Oh, yes, I love... my mum is there. - Yeah.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49Oh, it's so nice, it's so beautiful!

0:25:49 > 0:25:52We knew that you'd lost all those pictures of your mum.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55- And that's one that our crew found.- That is so lovely.

0:25:55 > 0:25:56And she repaired it.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59It was torn and she blew it up because she knew how much it meant

0:25:59 > 0:26:02- to you when you lost the pictures of your mum.- Thank you very much,

0:26:02 > 0:26:05that's really touched my heart. Oh, God, it's lovely.

0:26:05 > 0:26:09- It's very nice.- It's absolutely gorgeous. It's absolutely gorgeous.

0:26:09 > 0:26:13- Look at the light there. - Oh, my God. Oh, God!

0:26:13 > 0:26:17I can't believe it. How can you make a room look like this?

0:26:17 > 0:26:19It's just stunning.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21I can't believe it could look like this.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23- It's beautiful, isn't it? - It is. Very nice.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27- It's so lovely. It's so lovely. - Oh, yes. Lovely.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30- Thank you so much. - Oh, my pleasure.- Thank you.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32- Thank you, darling. - My pleasure. Least we could do.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34God. Thank you.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36You know an awful lot happened in here.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39There's loads of work that's taken place in just a short space of time.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41I know, there's so much.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44The reason that's happened is because there's so many people

0:26:44 > 0:26:47that heard what happened to you, and rushed around to help.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50- That's amazing. We're stunned. - And they're here

0:26:50 > 0:26:52- in your front garden.- Oh, my God.

0:26:52 > 0:26:53Really? Are they?

0:26:53 > 0:26:56I know they'd like to see you and say hello.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59- Of course. We want to see them. - Absolutely, and thank them so much.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02- I'm sure you'd like to see them. - Of course.- Thank you so much.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05- From the bottom of my heart, it's absolutely gorgeous.- It is.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08It's so... It's absolutely stunning.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14Now, obviously there's a lot of people that made it possible

0:27:14 > 0:27:18to transform your house like that. So come on out, come on out, Amrit.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20Oh, my goodness. Thank you so much, everybody,

0:27:20 > 0:27:23it's amazing. Thank you so much. Thank you. It's gorgeous.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25I'm glad you love it.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27Wow! What a reaction.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30It just goes to show that with some goodwill

0:27:30 > 0:27:34and an awful lot of elbow grease, you can genuinely turn those tears

0:27:34 > 0:27:37of sadness into those tears of joy

0:27:41 > 0:27:45'I'm so happy that we've been able to help Amrit and Wendy.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48'And the police - well, they haven't given up,

0:27:48 > 0:27:51'and are still on the hunt for the criminals.'

0:27:51 > 0:27:53It's great on such a cold day that the community

0:27:53 > 0:27:56and these tradespeople have come out to help in relation to the burglary

0:27:56 > 0:28:00that's occurred, and I can reassure everyone that West Yorkshire Police

0:28:00 > 0:28:03are absolutely committed to driving down burglary offences.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05It's very intrusive, it's very personal,

0:28:05 > 0:28:08it affects people in different ways. But together I think we can crack it.

0:28:08 > 0:28:12- Give yourselves a round of applause. Well done.- Absolutely. 100%.
